Welcome to MAGA Mondays. I'm here with Will Sommer, who you can't see is wearing shorts.
Will Sommer
You know, Sam, I was biking in. I didn't have time to. You know, for me, punctuality is the most important thing in terms of delivering for the MAGA Monday audience. So, you know, it's. This is a classic news anchor look, too right there. Aren't they always wearing shorts?
Sam
No. Beyond that, it's in direct violation of our employee handbook. And if you read the. If you read the letter of the handbook, you are subject to termination instantaneously. So it's been a good run, Will, but we gotta cut it short. We have a lot to talk about. Everything from the world of sports to international affairs to clavicular. There is just a ton going on. Your boy John Solomon, we're going to touch on that. But we're going to start with Trump, because if people didn't notice, the biggest sporting event in every four years happened yesterday. World Cup Final. What do you think of the match itself? I thought it was kind of boring, honestly.
Will Sommer
Yeah, you know, I. I didn't watch it myself. I was grocery shopping. I was leaving my house to go grocery shopping, and my neighbor was like, what are you doing? You know, you got to watch the World Cup. And I was like, oh, yeah. You know, you have these kind of parent weekends. Yeah, everything's, you know, carefully orchestrated. But I did hear it was boring and. But, you know, it's. I feel like the World cup went off pretty well. You know, obviously, Cash Patel did a great job. He put out a video saying what a great job he did.
Sam
We didn't even prep the video. Pretty amazing. I don't know if we could get that video prepped in the meantime, but that was pretty awesome.
Will Sommer
But, yeah, but, yeah. What was your take?
Sam
Well, the game itself was like, you know, Spain's so methodical. They're so good. They're technically astute. They pass the ball so well. But when you have a game where it's like something like 23 shots to zero on goal and that literally Argentine did not have a chance until it was in extra time, and then it felt like if Argentina had won that game, I would have been really upset because they were just acting thuggish towards the end and they were trying to get to penalty kicks, by the end, I was excited that Spain had scored a goal. I was just excited about that. And I know this is going to sound like, you know, classic American, but whatever, it was pretty boring for the time being until they finally pulled it out at the very end. I would have been. Again, we've been really upset if Argentina pulled out because they were. They were playing very unethical football. Let's put it.
Will Sommer
They're kind of the bad boys, is. Is what I've heard.
Sam
Okay. They had the bad boys, but that wasn't the highlight of the game.
Will Sommer
Well, I have a question for you. What did you think of Donald Trump's performance on Spain's team? Because that seems like, you know, I was kind of getting it secondhand. It seems like he was in the game.
Sam
Yeah. So the big. The big winner, the guy who scored the final goal was Donald Trump, which is why he was there to celebrate at the very end. Okay, so this was. This was kind of a highlight in a way. First, Trump shows up at this event, and he's sitting in the box, and he loves going to these big sports events. And honestly, it's, you know, whatever. He likes sports, it's fine. I'm not gonna get too worked up about it. It is a little odd. And I saw some commentary about it, that all this tragedy is happening in the war in Iran, and he and his family are just taken in the festivities. And, you know, you kind of hearken back to the. The Bush era, where, you know, Bush was kind of shamed into not golfing because of what was going on in the Iraq war. Trump has no hesitation about that type of stuff. And then when the game ends, he goes on the field. Let's start with the booing, which was pre. You know, it was tough to tell, but the pool port said it was pretty loud. Couldn't get good audio of it. And then we found this clip this morning where the. The audio's pretty definitive. Like, he's getting really booed.
Will Sommer
They don't like him.
Sam
Well, you know, he has gone out of his way. Piss off basically all these countries. Although Argentina.
Will Sommer
Well, he did save the Argentine economy, so hopefully they were a little nice. But the. But. But Spain certainly is a. He has sort of picked a fight with as one of our great enemies.
Sam
Sort of is like a kind of an understatement. He's like, at one point, he's just like, we're cutting off all trade with Spain. He's like, that's it.
Will Sommer
That they're done.
Sam
They're too lefty. But yeah, I mean, like, what? I. I don't think he cares that much. Well, if he does care, probably, but it is obvious that he's going to get booed in these events. This is. He's really gone out of his way to piss off the rest of the world and insult everybody except for a few select countries who happen to not be that great at soccer. Like, Belarus was not hanging out there and playing. You know, the Saudis weren't there. So it's not. It's not a particularly great venue for him. Also, this is the New Jersey, New York metropolitan area, so it's not great. Although I doubt, like, this is international flavor here. And then real. The really sort of insane stuff happens during the award ceremony. So to set this up, Spain wins. They have this big award ceremony. Obviously they're going to lift the golden. They're going to lift the World cup trophy. They're going to go crazy. They call Trump to the stage to present some medals for some reason. And they have FIFA president Infantino up there who is presenting some medals. Everyone's waiting in. Donald Trump just lingers and lingers and lingers. Let's watch. Oh, my God. Get out of the shot.
Will Sommer
That's crazy.
Sam
All right, so what'd you think of that?
Will Sommer
Well, yeah, so Gianni Infantino is kind of trying to pull him off. Trump kind of pats him, like, I know we did it, brother. You know, I'm happy, too. Let's time for our big picture. It was crazy.
Sam
The prior to that video, Trump's going around and shaking all the hands, and the captain of the Spanish team is like, thank you, thank you. And he like, kind of gently nudges him along to get to the side of the stage. And let's put up the video again. You don't have to play the sound. I just want to watch. I'm going to do a little, like, commentary as we played, if we can do so. All right, so there's Trump. And pause it for a second. Pause it. Okay, go back a little bit because Fontino comes in and he's like, trying to get Trump off and looks like
Will Sommer
wrapping his head around Trump's way.
Sam
He's like, come on. And Trump just kind of takes his right hand because actually, you go. Meanwhile, all the Spanish players are just not even paying attention to this guy. They're waiting to celebrate. They've been waiting the entire time. Let's keep playing. And Trump just kind of like, now stop. Look at his back.
Will Sommer
His back gets back in the frame. Yeah,
Sam
Look. And I just love. I wish we could do close ups because he's just sort of staring at the cameras. He knows all the cameras are right in front, but he's asymmetrical. His back is to the team. But his face is looking forward at the cameras and he's got this little Cheshire cat grin.
Will Sommer
He's doing the little stinker smile.
Sam
So obviously this is. So there's two explanations here. One is, and just keep this picture up. One is this is intentional. Like, he knows and he wants to be in the shot. And I think there's history to suggest that it was Copa America. He did the same exact thing last year. The other is that he's just confused and has nowhere to go. Where do you come down?
Will Sommer
You know, it's a good question. I'm a little sympathetic to Trump here because I know. Well, no, I've been in situations. This is like one of my great nightmares is like, you know, when people are like, let's get together for a picture. And then I'll be like, well, it's a little weird for me to be in this picture with these people, but they seem to want me or something. And then they're kind of like, why don't you move a little to the side or something. You know, I've been in these situations. The other hand, he has a whole staff dedicated to telling him, like, okay, you're going to do this and you're going to move out of the way. It's. I think he's doing it deliberately.
Sam
Okay, yeah, obviously he's doing deliberately. Well, there, there's questions in on the MAGA Internet about this. So, yeah, by and far, the, the, the common refrain I've seen among these MAGA accounts is that the Spanish team was just so happy to have him there and they all shook his hand and they just recognized the aura and how great he was, and they were. And this just shows that America is being respected again in the world stage. I, I've seen this in multiple Twitter accounts. And then if you read below on their replies, everyone's like, what the hell are you talking about? Like, clearly this was not the case. There was one account of I don't know who this person is.
Will Sommer
Yeah, let me set this up. So the, the Groiper accounts, however, were really like, trump will never recover from this, so let's pop one of these bad boys up. So this guy says, kaiser Rev, he's kind of like a Fuente's clipper. He says, bro, Trump will never recover from this crying rivers of tears emoji. And then there was another guy named Asuka Griper who said, you know, this is generational aura loss, essentially. So basically these are guys I'm assuming are probably in their 20s who are just like, this is so embarrassing. You know, I. I will say, you know, you think about if Joe Biden had done this, you know, and, I mean, this is very reminiscent of these Biden moments where he would kind of like, randomly, in, like, another delegation, if there was, like, a diplomatic meeting or something like that. And Trump has had these instances where they're like, no, you got to sit over there, man. You're not part of the South Korean team. And it. It.
Sam
It.
Will Sommer
So he kind of gets it, finds himself in these situations. In this case, I. I agree with you that. That it was deliberate.
Sam
So that's funny you mentioned the Biden thing. I hadn't thought about the analogy. But the. The famous Biden Hollywood fundraiser when he came back from that long trip overseas, and there's a video of Obama kind of like, trying to get him off the stage, and that Obama is infantino in this case, and he's just sort of like, hey, all right, we gotta go, we gotta go. Except in Biden's case, I don't think he was, like, trying to kind of get in the photos or anything like that. I think Biden was just sort of a little bit exhausted and tired and didn't know where to go. Trump is just trying to stay there. If people were confused about whether Spain was excited or upset that Trump was crashing their photos, I think we got definitive evidence here. The Spanish team tweeted this following picture. You might Photoshop him. You. I mean, you look to the right, and he's not there. Now, it's possible that this came, like, later, when he had meandered off finally. But if you put up the. The another photo, like, right beforehand. All right, go. Go back to the other one if we can.
Will Sommer
Yeah. So the. Trump's in this one.
Sam
Okay. And now he's gone now. I. I think they Photoshopped him.
Will Sommer
It looks like the confetti is still in the air, which suggests to me that it was, like, pretty recent. Like, it's not like they just kind of hung out there for another minute and took the shot. So I think they Photoshopped him out.
Sam
It's possible that they just waited till he was out of the frame to. Or they took a shot of him out of the frame. But if we go back to the last one, just quickly one more time.
Cash Patel
He's very.
Sam
I mean, that he's so in the frame there. It's like, absolutely in the frame there. He did eventually leave. I. I'll say. So it's possible that this is not a Photoshop and they're just having fun with it. We do have the Cash Patel video. So Cash is. Let's just set this up a little bit.
Will Sommer
Another great insinuator with sports teams, obviously. He famously had the. The incident with the Olympic hockey team.
Sam
Yeah, Cash. Cash went down to the. The locker room after the U.S. olympic hockey team won gold, and he started chugging beers and being like, these are my boys. They want me here. And they might have, actually. Because Cash is super into hockey. Cash is in a lot of heat, obviously, for, you know, a whole host of things. Excessive travel, things like that. Hanging with this girl too much. I've never seen an FBI director take a victory lap for, like, not having people killed.
Will Sommer
But this is no mass, baby.
Sam
Yeah.
Will Sommer
He's like.
Sam
But Cash had a ready to go video. I mean, this was like. They didn't just crash on this thing. Right? Like, this came out, like, several hours after the World cup was done. So they clearly had this thing ready to go, and they clearly were planning it out in case, like, the opportunity was there to do it. And they was where, literally, Cash gives himself an attaboy for doing his job. Let's watch the video.
Cash Patel
We put on the largest sporting event
Sam
in the history of the world.
Cash Patel
And everybody, including FIFA in the White House, looks the FBI to our interagency. Figure out how to get six and a half million people into the US and into these games without a single major security incident. We have lived up to that measure. And because you guys have put in the time, it's truly, truly incredible.
Will Sommer
Very casual.
Cash Patel
Just can't say enough about the preparation and the execution.
Sam
It's been flawless.
Will Sommer
Wearing a, like, a lululemon hoodie.
Sam
Yeah. That is the amount of narcissism to put out a video where you're in the center of it for, like, every frame. Basically, we put on. Who's we. He didn't put on the sporting event.
Will Sommer
It's crazy. And I mean, it's not as though it's like, obviously, I'm sure it was a great undertaking, but also, like, all the other countries that have hosted the World cup in the past have managed to do this, as did, you know, Mexico and Canada at this time. I mean, it's very weird to be like, you know, Cash has done the unthinkable. He had a World Cup.
Sam
Yeah. Just. Or you don't have to take a victory lap for doing your job. It'd be like if I, you know, got your newsletter out on time on Monday, and I was just like, we
Will Sommer
did it just video of you telling me what to do. You in center frame.
Sam
You know, we did it.
Will Sommer
But yeah, that actually deserves its own hype video.
Sam
I did the unthinkable. People said it couldn't be done, but will was edited and out by 6pm on a Monday. Unbelievable. These guys. I mean, congrat. It was a Iowa State. It was a great World Cup. I was super jazzed by a lot of it. I thought the final game kind of underwhelmed, but whatever that happens and I'm glad it went off without, without any incident. I find the need to take a victory lap for that ridiculous. I found Trump kind of lingering on stage. Totally ridiculous. But that's what you get with this administration.
Will Sommer
Yeah, I think, you know, I'm glad the government kept the focus on, you know, who really matters. Donald Trump and Cash Patel.
Sam
The golden boot goes to Cash Patel. The only other thing from this is Baron Trump. I just want to put up this photo of Baron who's got a great, he is the, the tie. First of all, he's very tall, but he, he, he's decided to go full Donald with the long red tie.
Will Sommer
Is he have like a bruise on his head?
Sam
No, I think he's just tall.
Will Sommer
No.
Sam
Okay. I don't think he's forehead. No, I don't think that's a bruise. He's got a long red tie, folks. He's, he's becoming his, his, his father completely. But, you know, five inches higher. Okay. Any final World cup memories that you want to, you want to talk about? Are you good?
Will Sommer
No, I, I, I loved every minute of it.
Sam
Yeah. Right. Especially where you're grocery shopping.
Will Sommer
The part, the part I, I will always remember was when Donald Trump caused a diplomatic incident in an attempt to cheat in the games and then we lost. Anyway, I will say there is on
Sam
a different sporting event and this is not a sports podcast, obviously. The British Open golf tournament was this weekend too. And Bryson Dechambeau, who is the Trumpiest of all the golfers, he did a video with Trump during the campaign where they like competed in this little like gimmicky thing that Bryson does. And anyways, he shows he's at the White House Sports Council and all that stuff. Bryson got in trouble over the weekend because he also clearly cheated. He was patent down the tall grass, the fescue to improve his backswing on a shot and he was assessed a two stroke penalty. And instantaneously people are like, oh my God. Trump's going to try to intervene and get the penalty revoked because they're buddies and it, look, and there are some reports, I don't think it's been confirmed, honestly, but there were some reports that Bryson was trying to call Trump up to like, have him call the British Open officials to like, get the penalty revoked, but it never materialized. So I guess Trump's like, there's an extent to how much Trump will involve himself in all these affairs. What do you think of the Trump sports curse? This idea that, like, if Trump shows up, bad things happen for the host team or in this case, I believe it was reported that he, he thought Argentina was going to win.
Will Sommer
Well, you know, we saw this happen with the Knicks, obviously. I think it's probably true. I think he has kind of, you know, it's like, I, I, I think it's fair to say he has kind of bad vibes that he brings around with him. And, you know, I think it, it, it's a sort of hex that he puts on you.
Sam
Yeah, I agree. All right, well, let's move from the surreal to the serious. The war in Iran. Horrible, horrible weekend. We've lost several of the service members. I think the counts up to 17. There's one missing. The straight is completely closed. If maybe a dribble of boats getting through. There's tax this morning. There's no diplomatic off ramp. Things are going horribly. And I talked about with Mark Hurdling over the weekend, it just feels like there is a real escalatory problem ahead of us. Trump seems to be like, ah, we're good, don't worry, we're knocking the hell out of them. Everything's great. You know, I said four to six weeks, but now I'm in four to six months. But we're doing things differently. And Mag kind of is like waking up to the idea that this is not going particularly well or like that Trump has been promising things that aren't maybe necessarily coming to fruition. So let's put up this tweet from your boy, Matt Van Swell. First of all, who is Matt Van Swell?
Will Sommer
Okay, really funny name. He's a guy who lives in North Carolina. And people may remember the big hurricane, I believe the big flood there a few years back. And he got kind of, he's just like a guy on Twitter. And he got kind of radicalized against Biden because FEMA was saying things like, no, you can't run like wildcat helicopter rescue missions. We have to figure out how we're going to use this airspace supplies in. And so that made him really turn against Biden. He became like this maga Twitter figure. And now he's an interesting guy because he reads as like, you know, I'm a normal guy. I'm. I'm like a common. A common sense kind of guy. But he gets pretty into conspiracy theories. Not in this case, but. But he. He's just kind of become a MAGA figure because of that.
Sam
Yeah, this is a case where someone got a little taste of the MAGA Internet and the dopamine that you get when you see your tweets take off, and then suddenly you're like, I need more of that. And the whole routine over and over and over again. But in this case, he probably stepped a little bit too far off the path. He writes, I'm confused, period. The USA has the most powerful military on earth. We've bombed the hell out of Iran for four months. Trump says their air force, navy, and nearly all their missile capabilities are destroyed. So how is Iran still capable of hitting US Bases right now? Question mark, question mark, question mark. So one of two things. One is he thinks some. There's, like, some conspiracy happening here, or is he, like, starting to question whether Trump maybe was full of shit? It's either one of those two.
Will Sommer
I think it's probably the latter. I think sometimes you have these cases where these, like, kind of mainline Maga pundits are like, wait a minute. And then, you know, they kind of get whipped back in line in this case. I think what we're seeing here is that there's, you know, before the MoU, there was kind of this divide in MAGA between people who were, like, really pro Israel, like, let's go, Max. Let's send in ground troops. People like Laura Loomer, Mark Levin, let's do it as hard as we can. Then you had people who are, like, really anti war, like Tucker Carlson, Marjorie Taylor Greene, Candace Owens. But then you had this big middle group of people who as. Who were kind of like, I guess if Trump says, we're going to do a war, that's cool. But then as it dragged on and kind of became this quagmire, and they start looking at the midterms, they're like, oh, my gosh, yes, let's do the mou. Let's just. I don't care what concessions we have to make. Let's just get this thing over with. Let's get it out of the headlines. Let's get. Let's get gas prices down. And now you're seeing that middle group. As the war kind of kicks back up again, they're saying, oh, my gosh, we can't do this, right?
Sam
But they don't ever get to the point where they're like,
