A podcast by two journalists in Seattle without a boss

Tell us a secret! The Burner gals return with glee over the Katie Wilson's winning of the Seattle Mayoral Race. On the pod this week is her consultant, Jake Simpson, from Winpower, who talks about what went into her win. All credit goes to Katie ... except for those last 2,000 votes, those we claim as the Burner Bump. News | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! Oh hai Burner Babes. We're gabbing this week about how only stupid, ugly people want to install surveillance cameras around our city. Mayor Bruce Harrell has decided that the Seattle Police Department needs literally more than 365 cameras across the city, a move that will threaten the safety of immigrants, people seeking abortions, and anyone in Seattle unlucky enough to be caught on grainy camera feed near the scene of a crime. On the couch to talk about this is BJ Last, from Stop Surveillance City, and returning guest Justin Ward, head of DivestSPD. Reminder that to stop Seattle morphing into the panopticon, submit a public comment by Sept. 9. News | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! Welcome back Burner Babes! Your hosts Ashley and Hannah are thrilled to be joined by, once again, Stephen Paolini, our on-call consultant and the string-puller behind Progressive People Power PAC (P3). As you already know, progressives had an outstanding showing in the recent primary election. But ever the devil's advocates, the girls (and Stephen) discuss Mayor Bruce Harrell's (narrow) path to victory, Claudia Balducci's odds (high) at the King County Executive job, and other random hot takes about the election along the way! Tell us a secret! Oh hiiiiii! We're back. This week we're talking about City Council Member Rob Saka shirking his duties and hiding in his office and the King County Council's decision to tax poor people in order to fund the services that land them in jail. Hannah says "Fuck off" a lot, and Ashley rants about crime statistics... again. We find a new friend for one fight, King County Council Member Regan Dunn. News | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! The Burner gals are joined by Progressive People Power PAC (P3) consultant and all around cool guy Stephen Paolini to talk about Democratic Socialist Zohran Mamdani's blow out victory over the Democrat establishment in the New York City Mayoral primary and what lessons Seattle can learn from it!Key take aways: The Democracy Voucher program (which we still like) prevents candidates from raising enough money to execute as sophisticated of a communications strategy as Mamdani did, NYC progressives did not give Cuomo the political cover that Seattle progressives are giving Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, P3 most likely won't spend in the mayor's race this year, and Ashley called Harrell daddy... Also: You should certainly still RSVP for The Burner's candidate forum Yes And The Vote on July 10 doors at 630pmNews | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! Hi group chat. This week Hannah and Ashley talk about the sporadic week of Seattle protests against ICE deportations. If you think you've heard everything about the protests last week, you haven't. We have takes, we have exclusive reporting, we have incredibly accurate impressions of Mayor Bruce Harrell. Drop in. Give it a listen. Can you believe this is our 11th episode? News | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! Oh hay friends. For the Pod this week, Ashley Nerbovig and Hannah Krieg talk about Cathy Moore's resignation from the Seattle City Council and run through her greatest hits in her brief reign. Was she really an evil corporate shill, or just evil? Also, former lone socialist on Seattle City Council Kshama Sawant wants to head to the OTHER Washington. She plans to challenge Democratic U.S. Rep. Adam Smith for his seat. Smith has taken to attacking so-called “new Left” extremists, saying Democrats are failing to govern well because they’re too focused on “concepts like ‘settler colonialism’ instead of on more immediate problems in people’s everyday lives.” So, the Burner gals play a game of "Who said it, Adam Smith or a Generic Republican?"News | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! The women of the Burner have some hot takes and do a wrap up discussion on the Cal Anderson anti-trans rally and counter protest, and how the Seattle Police Officer's Guild is the true right-wing party of Seattle . ALSO! We're having an event. You should come: Yes and The VoteNews | The Burner Seattle

Tell us a secret! BREAKING: Seattle Organizer-in-Chief Kshama Sawant joined the pod this week to talk about the Seattle City Council's latest attempt to make your life worse, and how you can help her to prevent a significant roll back of renter's rights. We're talking the $10 late fee cap, notice about rental increases, and limits on move in fees. All of this is actively at risk RIGHT NOW. With no Seattle Council Member even attempting to organize an effective pushback to this Council's assault on renters, Kshama has to step up. Join her at 2 pm Tuesday at Seattle City Hall. Other pod topics this week: Relitigating the naming of the Jumpstart Tax (Burner style is now "The Amazon Tax,") Cops in Seattle Public Schools, and Rainbow washing the Seattle Police Department.
