Welcome back to your Money Minute. I'm Candy Valentino. Let me ask you something. How much money would it take for you to finally feel financially secure? $500,000? A million dollars? Five million dollars? Well, according to the latest study from Charles Schwab on modern wealth, most Americans say that they need about $840,000 to feel comfortable and 2.3 million to feel wealthy. But here's the kicker. The Federal Reserve says that the median net worth for Americans nearing retirement ages 65 to 74 is just over $409,000. Which tells you that these so called numbers are psychological and they're not practical. They don't reflect your life, your goals and what you want to do with your money. Some people could live like royalty on a million dollars and others feel broke with 5 million. So what should you actually focus on? Your freedom number. That's the amount that you need to cover your lifestyle, not someone's definition of rich. And here's how you figure it out. Add up your monthly expenses, the real ones, not the ideal expenses. I want you to take that and Multiply it by 12 to get your annual lifestyle cost. Then to just factor an average rate of return of 8%. We're going to take that number and times it by 0.08 to determine how much capital you need invested times to fund your life. For example, if your lifestyle costs $100,000 a year, you're going to need roughly 1.3 to 1.6 million invested to cover that. Once you identify your freedom number, you will then have a real target to work toward, not some arbitrary millionaire myth. Find your number, build a plan and take one step today to implement it. I'm Candy Valentino and that's your money minute.
