well done. You want to know how to win the midterms? I've got the six ways that the Democrats must adjust, and AOC is leading the way. Yep, I said it. AOC is leading the way. And that clip tells you the shift. And I'm going to tell you why that shift must meet these six standards. I'm Chris Cuomo. Welcome to the Chris Cuomo Project. Yes, that's right. I'm saying it. The guy who you all hated when I went after aoc, remember? Now, you were right. You were right to be angry for two reasons. All right, These aren't among my six. I'm gonna get to those in a second. First one is because I got it wrong. I commented on a clip of her that was fake. AI baby, you gotta be aware. It just sounded so much like her taking an extreme position. And she came after me about it. But you know what? She was making a mistake back then, defending a bad position. Now, look, it was wrong. It wasn't her. I apologized. That's what you should do. Because I'm a grownup. Right. But the second reason you were upset is because you thought that was gonna win for you because you're angry and you're outraged. And AOC is very good at harnessing that, as she should be as somebody who wants to be a political leader, especially as a disruptor, which she wants to be. But what Jonathan Karl there said, my old buddy at ABC News is right. The majority of this country is not extreme. All of the data reflects that extremism. Sounds good, feels good on social media, does not move. The majority will not win elections in enough places. AOC understands that. Now this clip is going viral cuz they say it's proof she's gonna run for president. Who has? I have no idea if she's gonna run. If I were going on polymarket, I would bet 10 to 1 she's not gonna run. But that's not the point for Alexandria Ocasio or Cortez to put out there. That woke one was crazy. That tells you everything you need to know. And by the way, she's right. Why? Extremism doesn't win. Extremism doesn't win. And if you want to beat maga, you've got to be where the majority is. And you've got to get back from left and right and the extreme and to reasonable. And that's what she's flagging here. And she did it in a very clever way. This isn't one of my six either, but you should take note. She takes the correction and puts it into somebody else's mouth. Why? Because it eases the hypocrisy. You know, it gives this other councilman that she has the power of having said that what she said was wrong, that woke one was crazy. It's not me saying it, it's what they said. But I'm agreeing with them. That's a very clever device. Good for her. It's a sophisticated way to do it. And I'm not saying that as a backhanded compliment, as a criticism. It's smart for her to do that. It's a good tactic because it gets her to where she wants to be, which is we gotta move past where we were. The whole nationalized. All politics is local. That's noise, not signal. The signal is woke was nuts. And we've gotta figure it out. Defund the police nuts. Defund ice nuts. Okay, Destroy this, destroy that. What you're hearing from the dsa, it sounds good. It feels impassioned outrage. We're gonna get after it, we're gonna destroy it. Sounds good. Will not move the majority. Okay? Aoc just very clear on national television. Not in a video where she's showing you how she's gonna collect her eggs and showing a little bit of belly and playing to social media. All of that is clever and good. And I think, by the way, good messaging for women about what's okay and what's not okay. Good, good. That's one piece of AOC's allure. Okay? But this was very intentional. I'm going on a legit platform in a legit way, talking to a legit guy about where we should be and she is rejecting where they were. And reason number one is because woke was stupid. Taking it to the extreme the way they did made them something easy to oppose and to dismiss as crazy. She sees that now. Why? Because she now sees what agglomeration of power and how you get numbers is about. And the numbers are there. You're not gonna win. The morality and the moving the needle and the convincing people who are MAGA to be really be for you because you're really. It doesn't work because the extremes and the fringe, it's too much about identity. And that's stupid. Okay? And she sees that. So what are you going to do? You're not going to convince people that are, you know, die hard Trumpers. So what do you do? You're going to outnumber them. You're going to put together a coalition of the willing that are bigger than anything that they can get, even in the targeted races, which are going to be very hard. Right. Why? Because the popular vote can be a reflection of what's going to happen on the electoral side. Maybe, maybe not. Maybe, maybe not. Okay, this is hard. The electoral college and now all this gerrymandering and all these districts and how they work and how they're contrived. It's hard. It is hard to win in the places you need to win. And she knows it. And that's why you've got to have broad based appeal. And this whole thing, all politics is local. And Hong changed it. Look, Hong changed full stop. Why? Because of reason number one. It's stupid to be in the extreme because most people aren't in the extremes. Now, saying just believe what they say now is tricky. It's tricky. Why? Because it reeks of hypocrisy. Oh, now, but what you said before. No, but let me tell you something. Let's take a step back, okay? All philosophy, Epictetus, Seneca, okay? The biggest names in Stoicism, Greek philosophers. What did they say? Hey, you give me new information, the circumstances change. I'm going to change my position. Why? Because I'm logical, that's why. Because I'm a critical thinker. Now, in politics, they'll kill you with that. But we got to draw a line between positions and principles. Your principles shouldn't really change, but your positions should based on the pragmatism of what you're dealing with. That's what AOC is flagging here. Okay? Time to change. Why? Because I want to win elections. Public safety is a legitimate concern. Reason number two. Number one, WOKE is stupid. It's too extreme. It's too much. Okay? Makes it easier to campaign against you than for you two. Public safety is a legitimate concern. And MAGA is going to go hard on public safety. That's what they're doing with the Brown Menace. Demonizing people who are here illegally, seeing them all the same way. Saying that whatever ICE does is okay because they're here illegally. That's a loser. That's a loser. All right. More than 7 in 10Americans say that not all people here illegally are the same. That there should be a path to citizenship for those who meet certain criteria. So they're all the same. And let's be really harsh. Doesn't work because of reason number two. Public safety is a legitimate concern. But you gotta be reasonable about it. Okay? You can believe in police reform. You better believe that ICE has to change how they're doing what they're doing because it's, frankly, it's disgusting and un American. But police reform, accountability, alternatives to incarceration. I made notes. But you gotta recognize that ordinary people want competent police protection. Especially people in high crime areas. The lower you go on the socioeconomic level, the more important it is that they have good policing. They'll tell you that they'll be afraid of you if you don't say that. So reform. Yes. Destroy.

Defunding means get rid of. Means remove the protection of. Removes the service. No good. No good. Even if the underlying concern is legitimate. Right. The cop uses excessive force, it's no good. Yeah, let's get rid of cops. No, no, no. Defund. No good. Big difference between reallocating. Okay, let's take some of the money that the cops get, or let's add money to it for the mental health practitioners, for social workers. Let's deal with mental health cases differently so you don't wind up in a situation where you gotta shoot somebody or tase them or hurt them, because maybe there are other tactics and techniques and tools that you don't have. Very good. Very good. And it sends a very different message to voters. We're gonna do this. Better not. We're gonna just destroy it and make us look crazy. Okay, Next reason that this defunding. And again, I'm focusing it mostly around the public safety. Why? Because that's gonna issue in the midterms. And AOC was on the wrong side of it, and she knows that now. Listen to aoc because she's a real one, right? She's a bridge from the Democrats. DSA via the squad, which is no more. Right. There's no more squad. There's just dsa, and then there's the Democrats who aren't adjusting fast enough to where the energy is in their party. That's Schumer's fault. And Hakeem Jeffries, I think they got trouble. I think Schumer's got more trouble. AOC does not have trouble. She is who to watch. Okay? Crime policy works better when it's evidence driven. This is why the death penalty is easy to beat. Because all it plays to is the emotional harshness. It does not reduce crime. It is expensive. It Is a social instruction in brutality. The data wins, not the emotion. You see what I'm saying? The sensible position where the most people will be no matter where the race is, is more. Isn't more. Police solve everything or police are the problem. Neither of those extremes. It's where is the right combination for that community. You see? Not right, left. As far as you can go, it's reasonable. And why? Number four, broadening. Broadening is what wins. And that's what AOC is doing. She's broadening. Very smart. She got where she is by what? Isolating. Isolating us. Them. They suck. Kill them, destroy them, beat them. Right, okay, but now she wants to get somewhere else. Gotta go broad. A politician who wants to win and govern needs people who don't already agree with you on everything. And a big reason they don't agree with you is because they think you were too far. There is no gender, trans sports, all of these niche divisive issues, which are tricky. Why? Because I believe in supporting the trans community. I think that they are the most targeted community in our society. The last thing they need is more haters. The last thing they need is less understanding. But fighting about transports, no way. No way. Go broader. Go broader. Okay, go broader. Now look, what am I not talking about today? The economy. But this is about campaigns and messaging. And MAGA is not going to campaign on the economy. So you should if you want to win. Affordability is everything. 95% of us believe it's a crisis. The President has said it's a fake word, huge space. But I'm talking about this key messaging component that they are going to say that the left is crazy, they're the Defunders, they're radical, they don't want you to be safe. I'm focused on that. And the six reasons that this shift flagged by AOC is the right, the right way. Moving from maximalist language. Defund, destroy, redo, undo. You move towards safe communities, accountability, social investment, progressive ideas that are accessible to the working class that don't change your reality. They change the outcomes so that voters who are like, yeah, you guys are way too extreme, man. You know, I, you know, want to chop off people's dicks and all the. All this other stupid stuff. Just avoid it. Redefine the space. The way AOC is. Okay. Is it tricky? Yeah. Is it perfect? No. Is there going to be a stain and some stink that you're going to have to deal with? Yes, yes. But there's plenty of that on maga's side. Because Everything that they say has a built in hypocrisy, that they're not holding to that standard in their own analysis and assessment and accountability for Trump. So if they want to be in the. Well, you're a hypocrite, certainly not more than you are. And the fact that the AOC coalition and what they're trying to build on the left with the DSA or however else you want to see it is moving towards what works for the many. You've got high ground anyway, because what they're doing only works for the few. See what I'm saying? So, yeah, I'm changing. You can attack me for that, but I'm changing for the better. And that's how it works in the rest of life. And that's how it should work in politics also. And that's what this understands is this point of broadening the coalition. Point five. Now, point six, I mentioned this earlier, but you got to zero in on it. What you should do in attacking MAGA is saying, you people are so effing rigid, man. You're so absolutist. You just can't go bad on Trump. You just can't admit that you were wrong about anything. You just can't do it. But we can. But we can. Now let's spend some time on this. Changing your mind can be a strength. Okay, what did AOC do there? She put it in the mouth of somebody else. Yeah, this local councilman. Right, Keeping it local. Because she said everything's local. No, this is more local than a councilman. Right, except maybe like an alderman, and nobody even knows what that is. He said woke one was crazy. Ah, what a beautiful design. How so? Let's. Let's break it down. Woke one. As opposed to what? All wokeness. Why? Gotta be careful. A lot of people believe in woke. A lot of people believe in those progressive ideas. A lot of people know that the word woke has been weaponized and that it's taken from the black suffrage movement. And it means you better be aware of what's being done, what's being told you one thing, and it's actually delivering another thing. Okay? That concept resonates. That concept matters. Now, it is also a tool of division. MAGA uses it as a negative. Okay? So you got to be careful. You got to be careful changing your mind. Oh, so you're. So you're opposer. So you didn't mean it then? No, no, no, no. Now you got to have the discussion now you got to get on message. Now you got to be repetitive. Now you got to say it everywhere. Now you gotta submit yourself to debates and not hide and just talk to your own, because it won't work. Okay? There is risk in this, but there is no reward without risk. What got you here will not get you where you want to be in any way in your life. Okay? So you're not gonna do it the way I'm doing it by saying, you know, Socrates and Epictetus. That's not what campaigning is about. That's what this is about. This is what is nurturing your ideas as a critical thinker. That's what this is about. But that's not what politicking is about. Politicking is about, hey, look, different times, different vibes, different messages, different remedies, okay, George, Floyd. And this complete resistance to looking at what the police were doing, that was wrong. That required an extreme resistance. But now we're in a different place, and now I have a different prescription. Now we need different things. And it's not that I'm changing my mind on the principles involved. Police have to do it the right way or they have to be changed. But what that means looks different, sounds different, and that's why what I'm saying is different. Oh, so you're saying woke was wrong? No, that's why she's calling it Woke one. Why? Because it gives you space to say not all woke is bad. Not all woke is bad. It was just those extreme manifestations of it didn't meet at the time. Okay? And look, rigidity, okay? Nobody trusts somebody who never changes their mind about something, right? That's like Archie Bunker. That's like being a bigot, right? That's like being stupid. That's ignorance. So you never change your mind, right, about anything, ever? Nope. Never. Okay? That's not how adults think. That's not critical thinking. There's nothing inherently admirable about never revising a position. And if they want to say, well, but they were wrong and we were right. Ha, ha, ha, ha. Yeah, but they're going to lose that contest in MAGA all day long. Because the economy has gotten worse, because our level of civility has gotten worse, because Trump is the most corrupt force in presidential politics we've ever seen. I mean, there's at least a dozen examples. You only need one, though. This guy gave government contracts in defense to his sons who don't know what the. They're talking about billions of dollars in contracts, and the Republicans don't even want to look at it. Don't talk to me about rigidity. Don't talk to me about blind obeisance. Don't talk to me about extremism. You people suck. So you want to have that fight? Have that fight. You're going to win. Changing your mind. AOC's recent emphasis on judging politicians by what they believe and say now is a useful principle. Times change, needs change, policies change, principles remain. The police should be accountable. They should do what needs to be done in that moment and do it the right way or they must be changed. Not no police, not no ice. That's not what we're saying. Oh, yeah, but you used to. Yeah, but I'm not saying it now. There's something to that. Support comes from superpower. Listen, if you're into fitness, you gotta be into wellness. And if you're into wellness, you gotta be into data. About you. Specifically you and only you. And here's the good news. It's all about the bloods. All about the bloods. And that is the superpower. There are six reasons that what AOC just said there is the way and should be listened to. Okay? Is AOC an imperfect messenger? Of course. Everybody is. Okay. But she is the best at a bridge that you're going to find right now. Could that change? Sure. Sure. There could be somebody better than AOC to articulate this and to lean on for it, especially in the midterms. Why? Because you're going to have to pick different messengers and different moments on different things. Because you're dealing with so many different races and so many different places with so many different spaces, and you're gonna be courting so many different kinds of faces. But she's a real one. She's at the top of all the popularity lists for Democrats, and she's changing. And you should see that and see it for what it is, not just dismiss her. That's a mistake, I think. Number one, because the way they were doing it was stupid and would not win. Number two, public safety is going to be a huge battleground in the midterms. Why? Because they can't fight the economy. So shouldn't we fight on the economy? Yes, of course. Of course. But I'm telling you, public safety is going to be a big thing. They're going to be all in on Islamophobia and on demonizing illegal entrants. And you need a counter. Because they're going to say, well, you don't get it. You want to get rid of the people who keep us safe. No, I don't. No, we don't. No, they don't. You know, whatever the context. Why? Because public safety matters, and you can't surrender it, and you can't use it as an alternative to the economy. No economic security matters. But, you know, security. Security matters. Right. So you can't surrender this. You got to see it. It's coming. It's going to be there. It's going to be big for them, and you have to have a fight. And you do have a fight. Okay? You do have a fight. Public safety is a legitimate concern. Boom. Okay, number one, what we were saying was stupid. Woke one, you can call that version. Okay? Are you playing games? A little bit. But politics is a game, okay? Messaging is a game, Right? Donald Trump is playing games 99% of the time. All right, so number one, it was stupid. It doesn't work. Number two, public safety is a legitimate concern. We recognize that, we embrace it and we're on it. Number three, defunding we understand was unrealistic. Okay? Unrealistic. Okay. Why? Because the underlying concerns are legitimate. All right? And then you redefine what those concerns are. All right? The same way you can't treat all illegal entrants the same way you can't treat all perpetrators the same way. All suspects the same way. Why? Because if somebody's batshit crazy and not able to self regulate, what do you think's gonna happen when somebody who says, listen to me or I'll use force happens. What do you think is gonna happen? Bad shit's gonna happen. We all remember the images of the guy walking towards him with the knife. I'm gonna stab you people with guns. Point. No rational person does that. No healthy person does that. But what are their tools? Stop. Stop telling you stop telling you to stop telling you stop. It's not enough. The concern is real. What do we do with that person? Okay, but how you're doing it is too limited. Why don't you have somebody who has expertise in that? Why don't you put money into that? Why don't you reallocate? Why don't you add. Now you're having the debate. Now you're about the concern. Who's got the better idea? Crazy people should get shot. You don't listen, you obey or you pay. Fuck around and find out. You think that's going to win with the majority of people versus what I'm saying? I don't. Three, four. It was stupid. Public safety is everything. Okay? So be ready for it. We're ready for it. Three, Defunding wasn't right. It's about how you do it. And we're going to embrace what we need to change about how. Four, crime policy is going to work better when it's about what's actually happening, okay? The evidence, the proof, the statistics in that community that matter, tailored to this race and this place and what happens in this space. Okay? More police. Police are the problem. No good. Okay? What is the combination? What works here? What has Worked. Now, here's the good news on the local level is why crime has gone down. Local policies, there's nothing national. We don't do a lot of national things with policing. You know, we don't even really keep data well on a national level. So you always have to be a little suspect of the crime data because it's only about who reports in and how accurate their reporting is. We don't have a nationalized system. Why? There's several reasons. The worst one, in my opinion, is the more fuzzy the math, the more you can work with it. But that's something to know. So you get on that. Broadening the coalition. Number five, you got to go broader. The extremes aren't going to get it done. You got to talk past left and right and to what's reasonable. And the majority of this country agrees on most things and the need for public safety. And what that means is one of them. You got to be where they are. Okay? And then the last one is, hey, I know it's different than what I was saying. Times change, prescriptions change. All right, what Trump was saying about what was going to happen with prices, none of that happened. Right? He started a war. Instead, it made him worse. So changing your mind can be a good thing, can it? Rigidity can be a bad thing, can it? All right. And you lean into that. Yeah, we're changing. Of course we're changing. Times changed. Okay? What we were saying back then was specific to that one event and everybody was outraged and so were we. But now we got a guy who came in on that outrage and has made everything worse. And we got to a change to that. That's how I see it.

Those are the six reasons that's why AOC should be listened to. And yes, I'm saying it. And I picked AOC on purpose. Why? One, practical reasons. She is a main messenger. She is a fulcrum f U L C R U M FULCRUM why? She is that pivot point. She is that center point. She is that balance. How can she be balanced? She's a squad. She's a. Hey, times change. Positioning changes, okay? That's what's happening here. And look, just like I apologized when I took something that was AI was fake about her, but it did sound just like something she would say. So she came at me with the yo, dude, I didn't need my bed. She wouldn't say that now. Right. I apologize. Why? It was wrong. It wasn't even her. It was made up, man. Did it look good and it was accurate to her messaging. But the point is, I apologized, but I'm not demonizing aoc. That was never my point. I always say she is impressive. She is good at doing this with her people. And now she's changing. So what does that tell you? Maybe my criticisms weren't so ill founded. And it doesn't matter. I'm not in a gotcha contest. And by the way, that's my only criticism of the clip. You know, John Carl is trying to get her on a gotcha. That's fine. That's fine. That's political sport on the media side. But for aoc, there's a bigger game. There's a bigger target. What's going to win these elections. She is changing. See the change as a potential opportunity and a positive, not as weakness for change. That's stupid. That's playing into bad parts parts of the game. This is more important than that. We need change. Cuomo's going back to his roots. He's coming out as a Democrat. I am anti partisan. It only makes things worse. But I've never said I see the parties as equal. Never. They're just both in the game. They're just both offenders of the majority's interests. But that's the game. I have never seen a party absorbed by a toxic fringe the way we have with the GOP getting absorbed by maga. We don't even say GOP anymore. I barely even ever say Republican. Right? I barely even say Democrat. I usually just say left and right. Right. So I don't see him as equal. But that doesn't matter. I'm anti partisan. I think the parties are the problem. I think you got to get rid of them. And you can say that's unreasonable. That's okay. I'm not asking for your vote. I'm just telling you what I see. And by the way, it's always been that way. The more you look at our history. This has always been where we were going to wind up. And I'll tell you the best hypocrisy on it, if you want. So the founding Fathers, right? Everybody will tell you now if they're kind of thinky, you know, George Washington was against the parties. True, true. You know who started the parties in earnest? The same guys who warned us against them. Jefferson, Madison and Hamilton. They started dueling newspapers that they really, really wrongly funded through the government on the sneak. They controlled them on the sneak. And they started opposing political parties on the sneak, all to beat the other one and get more power over Washington's administration. So this shit's been going on. It's like the original sin of this constitutional republic and it's killing us right now. That's why I'm anti partisan. But I want you to see the game and I want you to see the shift. And I believe we need change because MAGA is toxic. It is toxic, it is reductive, it is destructive, and we need change. And AOC sees that and she's flagging something that could work. There are huge obstacles and burdens, and we'll go through them together. Mistakes will be made, advantage will be gained. And that's all this game is about, is showing that the other side is worse. These six points help one side show that MAGA is worse on what matters, which is going to be public safety. Do I believe the overriding concern is going to be the economy? Yes. This is second. And they know at MAGA that they can't fight on the first. So they're going to be fighting on this second one in earnest. And you better be ready or you're going to get served. So hopefully this serves your interests. Look at aoc, look at what she's doing, how she's doing it and why she's doing it, and see the way forward for change if it comes from the left.
