News. We're swearing jelly beans. Daily beans. Daily Beans. Daily Beans.
Allison Gill
Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Monday, March 23, 2026. Today, the Trump administration is making heavy preparations for the use of ground troops in Iran. The father of a fallen service member has spoken out against Pete Hegseth's claims. ICE detained a DACA recipient on his way to the nicu. Tom Holman confirms he's sending ICE agents to airports today. Thousands have been evacuated in Hawaii due to heavy flooding, and GOP hardliners are wavering on support for Pam Bondi's subpoena in the Epstein matter. I'm Alison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Allison Gill
Hello, my friend. Welcome back.
Dana Goldberg
Welcome back. It is good to be back. I gotta tell you, man, I had a blast at the Villages in Florida. I had no idea. Like, listen, there's a lot of stuff about the Villages that is kind of wild. Most of it's coming from the straight folks, but so many Daily Beans listeners came to the show on Thursday, which was awesome. And it was just a room of, like, joy and laughter and fun. And then I hopped over to North Carolina and did an HRC gala last night. We got to honor my dear friend Fortune Feimster, who's brilliant for her visibility and her career. It was just a very productive week. But thank you for covering me, as always, while I was gone. But Villages, way to show up, man. That show was a blast.
Allison Gill
Incredible, man. Fortune Feimster. Absolutely in love with Fortune Feimster.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, she's just a good one, man. And fame did not change her. I think fame brings out, really, who people are deep down. And deep down, she's just a good human.
Allison Gill
Yeah. Yeah, she really is. And that's why, like, I was completely fine losing to the handsome podcast at the.
Dana Goldberg
Right. I know. Totally. It's just an honor to lose to you.
Allison Gill
Bow down. She's just incredible. All right, so There's a new episode of the Breakdown out right now over on the Midas Touch Network. You can get it melisserote.com Dana, that story I cover from the Miami Herald, apparently a corrections officer called the FBI and a federal judge and the Office of Inspector General, and we're not sure if it's the same corrections officer to tell them that the after action investigation that was set up at the Bureau of Prisons where Jeffrey Epstein died at that prison, apparently they were shredding mountains of paperwork.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, God.
Allison Gill
Yeah.
Dana Goldberg
So I just don't understand why people don't believe that this was not a suicide.
Allison Gill
So incredible reporting from Julie K. Brown and I think Claire Neely over at Miami Herald. We covered that on the Breakdown, so you definitely want to check that out if you haven't seen it. Yeah.
Dana Goldberg
On a little more of a serious note, Alison and I, and of course everyone at the Beans are sending our love to our friends in Hawaii. They remains under a statewide flood watch. Horrible storms, horrible storms hit the state and it prompted officials to evacuate a lot of people. Now that that storm that struck this weekend is the second severe weather event to hit the islands in the last week. They didn't even have time to recover from the first one. In some parts of the state ag 40 to 50 inches of rain in 10 days, and that's according to Green. Oahu could receive 4 to 6 more inches, while parts of Maui could experience between 4 to 12. Another foot of rain like this is a lot for the island. So we are sending our love to everyone out there in Hawaii. Please stay safe. And when they give you an evacuation order, heat it. Although I guess on an island, what do you do? Go to higher ground. You can't leave the fuck. You know what I mean? You're not flying out. Just be be safe. Don't be out on the streets during this stuff. And don't be on lower ground. If you can get to higher, please do.
Allison Gill
Oh, my goodness.
Dana Goldberg
And as everyone knows, Robert Mueller died over the weekend and Trump, in no surprise to anyone, was a complete douchebag, saying he was happy he died and that he could no longer hurt innocent people. And if you follow me on social media, you'll realize that I made a video and said that is exactly what we will be saying about Trump when he goes. And he will go. It's just a reminder of what a sociopath he is. So Alison's gonna talk more about that when she returns tomorrow. I know this sounds very strange, not to be a comedic transition, but Allison's Internet also died while we were recording this show. So I'm going to handle it solo from the rest of the program. I don't want you all to not have a recording. Neither does ag, but some things you cannot control with technology. So we shall continue on with another quick hit. Politico has reported that borders are Tom Holman confirmed Sunday that immigration agents will be at airports starting today, which is absolutely fucking absurd. I don't know what he plans on them doing. But in an interview with CNN State of the Union, Homan told Dana Bash that he is devising a plan with Ted Lyons, and that's the acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Ha Nguyen McNeil, acting administrator for TSA, to determine where agents would best fit at airports across the nation. That plan, Homan said, will be finalized Sunday and go into effect Monday. Now, TSA agents, I don't know if there's any of them listening to this, but they go through training and I think it's been pretty proven how shitty the ICE agents training has been when it comes to actual immigration policy. And now they're going to be in charge of our safety at the fucking airport. No thank you. Can you just imagine the racial profiling that's about to take place? So hopefully something happens here. But I just want to remind everyone, Democrats have tried to pass, I think five, at least five bills that would have funded tsa and the Republicans refused to every single one of them to pass every single one of them because they want to make sure that ICE continues to do what they want to do, being the Gestapo and killing innocent Americans as well as just kidnapping people off the streets. So I don't know what this is going to do. The airports, I've been traveling a lot and I tell you what, if I witness any of this, I definitely will report back on the beans to let you know what I'm seeing. And if you all are seeing any of this at the airport, you know, you can write into the good news and tell us about your experience as well and we'll make sure we get to it. But until then, I got a lot of news to get to, so let's hit the hot notes.
Allison Gill
Hot notes.
Dana Goldberg
First up from Reuters, the United States military is deploying thousands of additional Marines and sailors to the Middle East. This is from three U.S. officials. That's what they told Reuters on Friday as the US Israeli war on Iran reached the three week mark. That's really interesting, the US Israeli war, because the Saudis are the ones that are making a shit ton of Money off this and from CBS sales related Pentagon officials have made detailed preparations for deploying US Ground forces into Iran. Multiple sources briefed on the discussion told CBS News senior military commanders have submitted specific requests aimed at preparing for such an option. As President Trump weighs moving in the U. S. Israeli led conflict with Iran. Now, Mr. Trump, Donald, as we call him on the show, has been deliberating whether to position ground forces in the region. This is from sources on the condition of anonymity. That's what they told people, of course, because they're not authorized to talk about this publicly. It was unclear under what circumstances he would authorize the use of troops on the ground. The military also held meetings to prepare for how to handle the possible detention of Iranian soldiers and paramilitary operatives if the President decides to put American boots on the ground. This is including where the Iranians would be sent. They have no plan, everyone. There's no plan. The US is preparing to deploy elements of the 82nd Airborne Division into the Middle east region. The movements underscore the Pentagon's efforts to expand military options available to the President even as administration officials publicly declined to even discuss potential next steps because they don't have any. There's new polling out on this war, by the way. Trump's approval rating has slipped to 34% with a disapproval of 63. And honestly that's still too fucking high. I have no IDEA who these 34% are that still thinks this schmuck is doing a good job. But we know they're not listening to this show and if they are, it's just because they like to troll us. But speaking of trolls, this next one is from NBC. Defense Secretary Pete Kegseth met privately Wednesday with the families of six service members who died in Iran in the war and in a press briefing the next morning said the message he got was consistent and supportive. I'm sure. And this is a quote. What I heard through tears, through hugs, through strength and through unbreakable resolve was the same from family after family. They said, finish this honor their sacrifice. Do not waver, do not stop until the job is done. I'm imagining that's not a verbatim quote from this families. That's what Hegseth said. One of the people he met at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware was Charles Simmons. He his 28 year old son, Tech Sergeant Tyler Simmons was among the six crew members killed when the refueling plane crashed in Iraq last week. Now Simmons recalled his exchange very differently. Oh really? This is a quote from Mr. Simmons. I can't Speak for the other families. When he spoke to me, that was not something we talked about. That's what he told NBC News. In an interview on Thursday, he said that he told the defense Secretary and I quote, I understand there's a lot of peril that goes into making decisions like this, and I just certainly hope the decisions being made are necessary. That sounds like more of a quote. Asked if he said anything to Hegseth or Trump about the need to keep fighting the war, Simmons said, no, I didn't say anything along those lines. These people are literally lying about conversations with the families of fallen soldiers. They are despicable pieces of garbage. Now a 60 year old music teacher in Columbus, Ohio, that's Mr. Simmons. He told NBC News that he has questions about the war and it's able to draw definitive conclusions. When I don't have all the data, who wants war? Sometimes it's a necessity and I just don't know what's going on. Neither do they. They don't know what's going on. I'm just shocked they even have the gall to meet with these families when these kids are dying for a war that did not need to happen, that the United States is not benefiting from. It's not making us safer at home. It's just so infuriating. Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement. And they quote, secretary Hegseth has the ut respect for our Gold Star families. Does he? And has pledged to honor the sacrifice of their loved ones. While at Dover, the secretary spoke with each family of our fallen heroes and the details of each individual conversation remain private. No, they don't actually, because he's lying about them publicly. A public official who was within earshot of Trump's meeting with family members that day told NBC News they did not hear any of them tell Trump to finish the job. Unbelievable. But is it? It's really. It's really not. I don't know why I keep using that term, to be honest with you. This next one's from Ms. Now 12 days after his youngest daughter was born prematurely, Juan Chavez Velasco was on his way to deliver milk to her hospital room, still in his own neighborhood in Weslaco, Texas. Please send a name of correction if I'm not Weslaco, Texas. When immigration agents pulled in front of his car, his wife, Stephanie Villarreal, 32 years old, was on the phone with him and heard the agents yell at him to get out of the vehicle. He said, I immediately became really panicked. That's what he told Ms. Now in an interview. He told them he had children. He told them he had a wife. He told them he had daca. He remembers their response. And I quote, they said, that doesn't matter. Again, that doesn't matter. It does, though, and it should. Now. Chavez Velasco, 35, was taken into custody and transported into a detention center in Laredo, leaving behind a US Citizen wife and three US Citizen children, the youngest of whom was in an isolation chamber in the neonatal intensive care unit. These guys are monsters. These people are monsters. I know they're not all men. So I said that very. Just. You know what I mean? And I quote, I never got to hold her before being taken away, he said in a cell phone interview from the Webb County Detention Center. The detention of Chavez Velasco, recipient of the Deferred Action for Children Arrivals Program. The DACA program, which has allowed hundreds of thousands of undocumented immigrants who arrived as children to obtain work permits and protections from deportation, reflects a broader pattern that immigration attorneys and advocates say has accelerated under the Trump administration. That's the targeting of dreamers who once believed the program shielded them. A separate pattern has also emerged. Recipients applying for renewals, which must be submitted every two years. They're facing lengthy delays that have left some with expired status and no work authorization. There's some attorneys and advocates have called the delays intentional. I'm sure they're intentional. Chavez Velasco's parents brought him to the United States from Colombia in 1999. He was just eight years old. They came on a tourist visa, overstayed, and applied for asylum. They did what they were supposed to do, a request that was denied, by the way, in 2004, well, after a failed appeal, the following year, the family was issued a final order of removal that Immigration and Customs Enforcement never enforced. In 2016, 12 years later, his parents were able to reopen their case and ultimately adjusted their status to legal residence to the US Citizen's daughter. But Chavez Velasco could not take the same path. Under immigration law, the wait time for a sibling of the US citizen to adjust status status is 15 to 20 years, compared to 12 to 18 months for a parent. Whoa. In 2012, he enrolled in DACA. He went on to earn two Bachelor's degrees in biology and clinical laboratory science. He built a career as a medical laboratory scientist, including working on the first lines of an emergency room during the COVID 19 pandemic. And I quote, he has no criminal history, Never has any type of criminal history. This is from his wife. He did everything right. Chavez Velasco said he had always told his wife there was nothing to fear. He said, I feel betrayed. I feel very sad and heartbroken because I would have thought that the Trump administration would be more compassionate towards people like me who contribute to the country and have basically lived here all our lives. I love this country. I love what I've been able to accomplish here. And I would say that this man loves the country more than the president of the United States, who is clearly a foreign agent at this point. He said, we're all contributing. We're all paying taxes. This is our home. Again, this is Chavez. Velasco and went on to say, I'm not asking for a free ride. I feel like a majority of people would agree that we deserve something because it wasn't our fault to be here and because we love this country. We want to be here. We want to be a part of this. We want to be Americans because we're Americans at heart. These people who pay taxes, by the way, this guy is in the workforce guarantee he paid more federal taxes than the President of the United States or any of these billionaires that are getting away with murder, literal murder out there. It's just disgraceful. We'll keep you updated on that story like we always do. This one's from cnn. Conservative hardliners who supported subpoenainaing Attorney General Pam Bondi and the House Oversight Committee Jeffrey Epstein's probe. Well, they're now indicating that they're open to changing their position after Bondi met with the panel for a briefing that turned contentious with Democrats. Lauren Boebert, this is what bothers me. She actually told CNN Thursday that she's absolutely considering withdrawing her support for the subpoena because it is, and I quote, absolutely shameful to have her come in there willingly to answer anything that we wanted to ask and to be treated that way. It just shows what's to come. It's. I was hoping. I know I shouldn't hope for more from Lauren Boebert ever, but she was so insistent on the release of these files that I thought she would hold the one person who could unlock the key to most of this accountable, but she doesn't seem to care. Bondi's voluntary meeting with committee members behind closed doors on Wednesday, it erupted when Democrats stormed out. They left because they were frustrated, saying that she would not commit to complying with her subpoena. Five Republicans on the panel voted earlier this month to actually subpoena Bondi. House Oversight Chair James Comer told reporters on Thursday that he plans to talk to his fellow Republicans about what the next steps are, but indicated he plans on honoring the subpoena. We'll see. Comer was not one of the five Republicans to vote for the subpoena and said he didn't think it was necessary. It is necessary. You need Bondi under oath, comer said. If we were to rescind Pam Bondi's subpoena, he would have to talk to counsel because he's not sure how the process would be handled. Boebert said she hasn't talked to the White House at all about her support for the subpoena, but slammed Democrats for how they handled Bondi's appearance on Capitol Hill. And we've got Rep. Nancy Mace again, not surprising who led the push to subpoena the attorney general in the House Epstein probe. She said her support for Bondi's subpoena is not wavering. Okay, we'll see on that, she said. No one has asked me and I won't. That's what she told cnn. Democrats have argued that DOJ offered Wednesday's briefing to try to get out of the subpoena for a deposition with Bondi. We are once again demanding that Attorney General Pam Bondi make it clear that she's going to come in for an under oath deposition that she's under subpoena to do and that we're not going to participate in fake hearings and briefings like the one that they tried to set up yesterday to get out of the sworn under oath testimony. This is from Democratic Rep. Robert Garcia. Robert is the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee. That's what he said on Thursday. I didn't expect anything less than a circus when it came to Pam Bondi. So we'll see what happens on this and you absolutely know that we will keep you up to date on this and let you know what happens. So those are the hot notes for today. Give us a few minutes. We'll be right back with the good news after these messages.
Allison Gill

First up, good trouble. This is from Anonymous. Hello. I'm working with an organization in Wisconsin that mobilizes the youth vote. We have another Supreme Court election coming up April 7, and I have an ask for any beans listeners in the state of Wisconsin. We're looking for volunteers to serve as poll observers on election day. That's April 7th. And during the early voting period, March 24th through April 5th, volunteers will help us protect student voters on 14 college campuses across the state. This is a big deal. Your presence can make a big difference in the safeguarding the vote process and flag any shenanigans. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to protect the rights of student voters. I love this. Everyone will get appropriate training supplies, et cetera. If you're interested, please email my brilliant co worker Ella. Anonymous super cute pup. This is awesome. Anyone, anyone in Wisconsin that wants to be a part of this to help protect the polls, especially on college campuses and you know there's going to be some shenanigans, we'll have that email for you in the show notes all right, from Am pronoun She they hello AG and dg. I want to offer a quick correction. How about a correction on that? I want to offer a quick correction to a talking point I'm hearing frequently, not just on the daily beans, but across several left leaning spaces. The framing around the purchase of steaks and seafood is misleading. Those items are not usual accesses. They are part of an established military budget used to provide deploying troops. I had talked about this on a previous episode and on Stephanie Miller thank you for the submission. They're used to provide deploying troops with a rare luxury meal, often before long or dangerous deployments, and sometimes before what could be their last meal at home. It is a grim reality, but for service members who are too often treated as disposable, it's one of the few gestures of care they receive. My spouse is a wartime veteran. He was an officer. I'm withholding his branch and rank for anonymity. Thank you though, for his service, by the way, and has specialized knowledge of authorization of federal expenditures, so I know what I've stated here is true. The piano, violin and flute, though definitely wasteful. As for the compliment, your podcast has been my single reliable lighthouse for staying informed and sane. In what often feels like a roiling sea of nonsense and dreadful. In a time when the news so frequently lands like a brick to the chest, you've somehow managed to deliver the facts with clarity, integrity, and just enough humor to make them palatable without ever minimizing their importance. There are precious few bright spots in this media landscape right now, and the daily beans has consistently been one of them. Thank you for continuing to show that truth doesn't have to be joyless, that accountability can coexist with levity, and that staying informed doesn't require surrendering all hope or serotonin. What a great statement. I've included my pod pet tax as well. Our three rescue stooges. The smallest dog, Gerns, is brown, black, beige with long hair. The middle sized dog is Tater, the brown one and the largest dog, Ducky, is gray. I'll let you guess their breeds. Oh my God, they're so cute. J. I mean, Jay looks like a little bit of a German shepherd mix with a pitty. The one in the middle on the right hand side, it looks like we have some sort of a Lassie dog. I can't remember what that is. And also German Shepherd. And then the left. I would say Pitti. And I'm stuck on that one. What do we have? J is a German Shepherd. American bullet. Pity. Okay, I got that one right. Which is wild. T is mostly goofy and awkward. Pitbull boxer mix. And we've got D is. Oh my God. A thousand percent. Lacy dog is not a Lassie dog. I thought I got that right. What's a Lacy dog? I don't know. Unless that really says Lassie. And I just am not pronouncing it right. This whole thing's a mess. If I mess up the dog breeds. Just go ahead and send in a correction on this wonderful submission. Uh, it's also dawned on me that their initials rearranged are unfortunate. Oh my God, they are Donald J. Trump. That's. That's really unfortunate. Let's just keep them in the order they're in. Jtd. Perfect. Perfect. Next up from Karen. Pronouns she and her. Greetings, ladies. I've listened to you for almost a year. Also a Karen from Sweden. Your podcast is the first I listen to when I hit the gym in the morning. Ag read a post from Karen. I assume she spelled it with an I and not an e. On Friday, March 20th. I look forward to listening daily. I'm a senior citizen in good health. Mazel Tov. I've always been a strong Democrat, but two and a half years ago I decided I needed to do more than vote. I went to a parade to march with the local Dems. There I met the local head of the party. He asked me to become a Democrat precinct committee person for my precinct. Fast forward to today. I just ran for my second term. I have attended both no Kings in my area for this. No Kings. I just completed the training to be a marshal. I just want people to know that you are never too old to get involved to make a difference. For my potpet tariff these are my two foster cats, Camilla and Bobcat. Sadly, I have had Camilla since October and she is still looking for a forever home. However, she's very happy at home presently. Both cats are wonderful pets and would make a wonderful addition to anyone's family, including a picture of Camila sleeping on her back on my lap and a picture of Bobcat sleeping on top of our golden Doodles bed. We're gonna have a link in the show notes both of these are actually one of these cats is at samsrescue.org, literally what it sounds like. Samsrescue.org thank you for that submission. I love this. I love all our listeners. Next up from Matt Pronouns he and Him Dear Dana and Allison, I'd like to share some good news about Sarah cycling in Los Angeles. I listen to the daily beans on my bike, commute to work, I get some good exercise, avoid using the car and I get the pleasure of hearing your program as I ride. Part of my route is along Hollywood Boulevard which now has a safe, well marked and protected bike lane along a busy street. That route is new as of this year and it's awesome. Like many cities, Los Angeles is making steady progress while becoming a more bike friendly city. Now protected lanes and projects such as the Chandler Bike Connection are closing critical gaps while expanding access to the LA River Path and linking more neighborhoods to car free routes. And I love this. Actually Matt, I used to ride the 40 mile loop on the Chandler Bike Path from North Hollywood all the way out to Topanga Canyon. I loved it. I loved it I would stop halfway and get get a burger and then take the 20 miles back. It's when I was training for the AIDS ride. Now for my potpet tariff. I'd like to introduce you to Tofu, our Senior Blank. She's 12 years old, blind in one eye, super chill. Her favorite treat is popcorn, and her enemy is the mailman. This looks like a giant French bulldog, but let's see what we have. It is a giant French bulldog. I am killing what the mutt today. I think I'm like 66%. That's really good. Hosts: Allison Gill, Dana Goldberg
In this news-packed Monday edition of The Daily Beans, Allison Gill and Dana Goldberg dissect major stories: the Trump administration preparing for possible ground deployment in Iran, ICE’s escalation at U.S. airports and the targeting of DACA recipients, Robert Mueller’s passing and Trump’s reaction, destructive flooding in Hawaii, and the messy House subpoena battle regarding Pam Bondi in the Epstein probe. With Allison's internet cutting out mid-show, Dana solo-hosts much of the episode, delivering trademark warmth, incisive outrage, and yes—beans-brand snark.
