Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Wednesday, December 10, 2025. Today, Donald Trump plans a $12 billion bailout for farmers after the fallout from his failed trade war. The D.C. circuit Court of Appeals has sided with Kegseth on the transgender military ban. Detainees at the Everglades concentration camp were tortured, according to a new report from Amnesty International. Hondurans have issued an arrest warrant for their drug trafficking ex president that Donald Trump pardoned. Congress is going to withhold Kegseth's travel budget until he releases the full September 2nd video. And criminal contempt proceedings are underway in Boasberg's courtro after he orders both Erez Reveni and Drew Ensign to testify. I'm Alison Gill.
B
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
A
Hello, my friend.
B
Hi. It is so nice to be on the east coast with you. Alison and I actually got to spend an in person meal today, which never happens. She joined me at work last night at the Brick Awards, and you were wonderful and the crowd loved you and appreciated your generosity and gave you a standing ovation and you looked beautiful and all of the things.
A
Oh, stop, stop, stop. I didn't even know that you told me that this morning that they gave me a standing ovation, but it was just such a blur to me that because I haven't been on stage in so long, I was just like, huh. I was nervous. But you held my hand the whole time and it was awesome.
B
We had a moment. It was lovely. So thank you for that. And I know that they appreciate your generosity and what you were doing with your veterans benefits. Well, not directly with those, because you're not allowed to do anything directly with those legally. But you know what I mean, right?
A
Legal disclaimer. I am donating the equivalent of my veterans benefits. Exactly. Through the Daily Beans podcast. And that's you too, my friend. So I had a really great time. We got to meet some incredible people. The two amazing women from the L Word that presented the final Hailey and Kate Monig.
B
Yeah.
A
The final award from the night. Got to sit next to them and their editors, their book editor, and their book editor's partner. Also got to see your partner, who I always love to run into and talk with. And then got to meet the incredible Zoe Zephyr.
B
Yes.
A
And Erin Reed from Erin and the World.
B
I did not know Zoe and Erin were married. I've been living under a rock. They're both incredible people. They have done so much in their own right, and I can only imagine together they're a powerhouse. I just. It was awesome.
A
Yeah. Changing the world, kicking ass, taking names. And, you know, we report a lot of stuff from Erin in the morning here on the Daily Beans because she does such thoughtful and incredible and important reporting, especially for the trans community. So it was wonderful to meet them as well. It was just an incredible night all around. Thank you for taking your co host to work day. I really appreciate it.
B
It was my, my pleasure. I'm sure it'll happen again.
A
Yeah, I hope so. Also, we've got a lot of news to get to today. Some things that made it to the cutting room floor that we're going to talk about on the Beans Talk video podcast. If you haven't subscribed. We put out a daily video news podcast every day. Well, every weekday, I should say. And we do that over at the MSW Media YouTube channel. It's free to watch. But today, Dana, and this is very upsetting, a three judge panel, two Trump judges and one Biden judge, voted 2 to 1 to stay a lower court order that allowed transgender people to serve in the military. Now, the judge, the two judge panel wrote, in our view, the court afforded insufficient deference to the Secretary Hegseth and his considered judgment. Accordingly, we stay the preliminary injunction pending the government's appeal. Now, Judge Pillard, who dissented, she wrote, this suit arises because the government has now decided to force every transgender service member out of the military through a policy based on nothing more than negative attitudes about transgender identity. Defendants provide no evidence that they base their new policy on any assessment of costs, benefits, or any other factor legitimately bearing on military necessity. Indeed, there is, quote, no evidence that Trump or Hegseth consulted with uniformed military leaders before imposing their unprecedented ban on transgender service members. The outcome was determined by animus from the start. Now, again, this isn't a ruling on the merits, but the Supreme Court has twice allowed the ban by staying lower court orders. So we'll see what happens on appeal. But I don't have too much hope with this Supreme Court.
B
No, neither do I. Thanks, Allison. This one's from the Times. The Honduran attorney general announced on Monday night that it had issued an international arrest warrant for the country's former president. That's Juan Orlando Hernandez, who was recently pardoned.
A
Huh?
B
Recently pardoned by President Trump and released from prison in the United States. In a social media post, Attorney General Johal Antonio Zelaya Alvarez said he had instructed the government and Interpol to execute the warrant against Mr. Hernandez, citing charges of money laundering and fraud connected to a case involving his first presidential campaign. More than A decade ago. So I love that they're like, you're going to let him out of prison. You pardoned him for drug crimes. You didn't pardon him for this. This is a whole different crime.
A
And even if we still get to, we have sovereignty, we can still, you know, put him in jail. Cause the US Took him, wouldn't extradite him, tried him, sentenced him to 45 years and put him in prison.
B
Yeah.
A
But if you're going to let him out, well, we'll go ahead and arrest him, since you're not going to.
B
Oh, my God.
A
So we'll see if Interpol makes an arrest. All right, we have a bunch of news to get to, so let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes.
All right, first up from the Times. President Trump rolled out a $12 billion out for struggling farmers on Monday as he looks to shore up the finances of some of his most loyal supporters, whose financial fortunes have been decimated by Trump's trade war. The rescue package, which we wouldn't need if he didn't impose tariffs in the first place, which was unveiled at an event with farmers at the White House, comes as Trump's trade policies have hurt America's agriculture sector. While Trump's plan to raise tariffs was intended to spur domestic production and open export markets, it's actually closed off sales for many US Farmers. China, the biggest buyer of American crops such as soybeans, retaliated against Trump's tariffs by halting purchases of US Farm products this year. Quote, we love our farmers. That's what he said. As you know, the farmers like me, I hate him. Most of the relief funds will come from the Agriculture Department's Farmer Bridge Assistance Program. That's according to the Agriculture Department. The money will go to producers of corn, cotton, sorghum, soybeans, rice, wheat, and other row crops. The payment to the farmers will be made by the end of February. The Trump administration will initially distribute 11 billion and is reserving another billion to support growers of fruits and vegetables as needed. Mr. Trump said the money was a small portion of the revenue that the United States had been taking from tariffs, which are taxes on us. Although he said the tariffs made the payments possible, Mr. Trump's aggressive use of import levies is the reason the American farmers need economic support. The payments are not being funded directly by tariff income. Now, American farmers, a key voting block for Trump, have been warning of the worst crisis since the 1980s as China turned to Brazil, Argentina, who we gave $40 billion to, and other markets for food products as Retaliation for the president's trade war. High tariffs on foreign goods that farmers need, like levies on metal used for farm buildings and tractors, as well as immigration restrictions that have cut down on the number of farm laborers have also weighed on American farms. He did this himself and now he's using our tax money to bail himself out.
B
Yes, he is. Start the fire. Be the fireman. Now next up from the Guardian and content warning, by the way, for torture detainees at the notorious Florida immigration jail known as Alligator Alcatraz, not our name. Theirs were shackled inside a two foot high metal cage and left outside without water for up to a day at a time. A shocking report published on Thursday by Amnesty International, the human rights group, said migrants held at the state run Everglades facility and at Miami's Chrome Immigration Processing center, operated by a private company on behalf of the Trump administration, continue to be exposed to, and I quote, cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment, rising in some cases to torture. The cage known to detainees as the box, is used by guards for the arbitrary punishment of trivial or non existent offenses. That's according to a report compiled from interviews with detainees and advocacy groups and a site visit to Chrome made by Amnesty workers in September. Quote, it's a box outside, exposed to the south Florida sun and humidity and exposed to mosquitoes. This is what one detainee told the group. I'm so pissed about this. A lot of these people, all of these people are probably being held without due process.
A
And this is can. This was considered torture when we did it at a CIA green site. It's, yeah, the box, it's, it's, it's torture. We. Can we call that torture?
B
This is not the country. This was not the country we should be. This has never been the country we should be. And it's not the country we have to be. This is a quote from the story. One time, two people in my cell were calling out to guards telling them that I needed my medication. Ten guards rushed into the cell and threw them to the ground. They were taken to the box and punished just for trying to help me. I saw a guy who was put in for an entire day. The Florida Department of Emergency Management, or dem, it operates Alligator Alcatraz independently of federal under the umbrella of Immigration and Customs Enforcement. So it's not part of ICE. Molly Best, press secretary to Florida's Republican governor Ron DeSantis, told the Guardian the Amnesty report was nothing more than politically motivated attack. None of these fabrications are true. In fact, running these allegations without any evidence whatsoever could jeopardize the safety and security of our staff and those being housed at Alligator Alcatraz. The fact that they even call this officially Alligator Alcatraz is disgusting.
A
Yeah.
B
Amnesty International's report details allegations at this facility. I hate to keep saying it. Of unsanitary conditions, including overflowing toilets and fecal matter seeping into where people are sleeping, limited access to showers, exposure to insects without protective measures, lights on 24 hours a day, poor quality food and water, and a lack of privacy. It said, and this is a quote people interviewed share, that access to medical care is inconsistent, inadequate or denied altogether, placing individuals at serious risk for both physical and mental harm. People reported being always shackled when they were outside their cage. The fact that we're holding people in cages is furious. The group also said it found a similar situation at the chaotic Chrome North Service Processing center in West Miami. That center was notably the subject of a separate July report by Human Rights Watch, who alleged detainees were shackled with their hands tied behind their backs and made to kneel to eat food from styrofoam plates. Like dogs, Amnesty documented, it said were delays in intake procedures, overcrowding in temporary processing areas, inadequate and inaccessible medical care, alarming disciplinary practices, including the use of prolonged solitary confinement and challenges in access to legal representation and due process. Amnesty report concludes with a number of recommendations, including a call from Florida to close Alligator Alcatraz and end all agreements in cooperation with federal immigration authorities. It also calls on the Trump administration to halt the criminalization of migration and end mass detention. These findings are a wake up call. This is from Mary Caprone. She's a member of Amnesty International's research team. She said the treatment of people inside these immigration detention centers is cruelty hard. Stop the medical neglect, filthy and inhumane conditions, dehumanizing punishment and some causes amounting to torture is abhorrent. Federal and state officials must act immediately to end this inhumane rights crisis.
A
My gosh. That's. Yeah, that's. They're torturing people. That's fantastic. I'm glad Amnesty International got people inside. Me too. See these.
B
I'm actually shocked, right? That they let him in there.
A
Yeah, same. Thank you for that reporting. It's disturbing. Next up from cbs, the Trump administration in March invoked the Alien enemies Act, an 18th century wartime authority used to remove non citizen with little to no due process to deport two planeloads of alleged migrant gang members to Seacoat mega prison in El Salvador by arguing that the Venezuelan gang trende Aragua is a hybrid criminal state that is invading the United States. Boasberg issued a temporary restraining order and ordered the planes be turned around. But Justice Department officials said his oral instructions directing the flight to be returned were defective and the deportations proceeded as planned. Boasberg subsequently sought contempt proceedings against the government for deliberately defying his order. Quote, the court thus believes that it's necessary to hear witness testimony to better understand the bases of the decisions to transfer the deportees out of the United States custody in the context of the hearing on March 15, 2025. That's what he wrote in an order on Monday. He went on to say, the events surrounding this decision should shed light on this question. And in his ruling, Judge Boasberg noted that it would be premature to refer anyone to be prosecuted for contempt because of the limited information provided by Trump administration officials about the deportations. He wrote that DHS Secretary Kristi Noem's brief, her brief sworn declaration that she recently submitted in the case, did not provide enough information for the court to determine whether her decision was a willful violation of the court's order. Quote, as this declaration does not provide enough information for the court to determine whether her decision was a willful violation of the court's order, the court cannot, at this juncture find probable cause that her actions constituted criminal contempt. A referral for prosecution, consequently, would be premature. Now, he's also written an order, Dana, to call Drew Ensign, the Department of justice lawyer, that basically, you know, ML Bove instructed him to tell the court to fuck off to testify. And that's coming up, I think, next week, as well as Erez Raveni, the whistleblower who heard Emil Bovey tell Drew Ensign to say that. So that's going to be some pretty explosive testimony in this contempt proceeding.
B
Love it. Thank you, Allison. All right. This is from cbs. A bipartisan group of former federal ethics officials is asking for an internal Justice Department investigation into the legal opinion justifying US Military strikes on suspected drug running boats in the waters of South America. I love that this is continuing. The ex Official center request Tuesday to the Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility, calling for the fact that this Justice Department has that department still is pretty laughable. Calling for, and I quote, an immediate investigation into whether members of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel violated their professional legal responsibilities in preparing legal guidance that justified the unilateral use of lethal force against civilian foreign nationals, including alleged drug smugglers. The group includes Norm Eisen, Richard Painter, Virginia Cantor, who served as ethics counsels for Presidents George W. Bush, Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. Their letter cited a Nov. 12 report in the Washington Post which said the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel authored a still classified opinion finding that, and I quote, personnel taking part in military strikes on alleged drug trafficking boats in Latin America would not be exposed to future prosecution. Can't just make that shit up, the group's request for formal inquiry said. The result of the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel's opinion, free reign for the government to just murder and assassinate foreign civilians is shocking and certainly raises the most profound legal ethics concerns. Congressional leaders and top lawmakers on the House and Senate Intelligence Committees are expected to receive another briefing from top administration officials on the military strikes and their legal rationale on Tuesday. The military has carried out more than 20 strikes on alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and eastern Pacific since the beginning of September and killing more than 80 people. And they also have more than 80 stories of what's actually going on in these boat strikes, and none of them agree with each other. And in a related story from Politico, Allison, Congress is using its marquee defense bill to force the Pentagon into turning over that video, the video of the strikes against suspected drug smuggling boats off the coast of Latin America. And they pushed Trump on this again today. And he lashed out at another fucking female reporter. Lawmakers plan to withhold a quarter of Defense Secretary Pete Kegsest travel budget unless the Pentagon provides them with the video. The demand, quietly tucked into the final draft of the annual Defense policy Bill, calls for unedited video of strikes conducted against designated terrorist organizations in the area of responsibility of the United States Southern Command to the House and Senate Armed Services Committees. Hegseth on Saturday wouldn't say whether he would release the video, citing potential safety concerns for troops, but President Donald Trump had said he would have no problem doing so. The Pentagon chief has publicly backed the decision to kill the survivors, although said that Admiral Frank Bradley, head of US Special Operations Command, made the final call on the second strike. We told you a long time ago they threw him under the bus. The provision creates a new wrinkle in how Congress is going to proceed with an investigation. House Armed Services ranking member that's Rep. Adam Smith from He's a Democrat in Washington, said that the footage contradicts how Hegseth and other Republicans have described it. And when I say his name Hegseth, it sounds like I'm saying it wrong because his name is Kegseth. And that's how we've been saying it for almost a year. And this is the quote in the story. If they release the video, then everything that the Republicans are saying will clearly be portrayed to be completely false. That was from Smith. He said that Sunday on ABC's this Week.
A
Now, this will be fascinating because, you know, you and I talked about the fact that I, you know, I figured that the Department of Justice would probably use that Office of Legal Counsel memo as their excuse to justify these extrajudicial killings, these murders.
B
Yeah.
A
It's a classified document at this point. And I think that the administration is going to argue that even if they did declassify it, it's subject to work product privilege, deliberative process privilege, executive privilege, all these things that would prevent it from being unseale. But if somebody sues like Norm Eisen and Richard Painter and Ms. Kantor and a judge decides, looks at it in camera and decides that it's not classified or that it's not subject to deliberative process, that we may be able to see this memo or at least understand a summary of the legal arguments behind justifying these murders.
C
Yeah.
A
Who knows? We'll wait and see. All right, we got a lot of good news to get to, but we have to take a quick break. So everybody stick around. We'll be right back.

And this is from Anonymous pronoun she and her hi AG and DG Daily Listener listener here. ICE has recently become very active in my community and I'm sickened by what I see. People being ripped from their cars and kidnapped, not being allowed a phone call or an attorney, property being destroyed, warrants being made up after individual is apprehended full of lies and falsehoods, being taken hundreds of miles from home and then released with no phone, wallet or money. We're all supposed to just stand by and watch? It's atrocious. But while doom scrolling, I came across this news story about a nativity scene at a church in Boston. We'll have a link in the show notes where Mary, Joseph and Jesus are missing and instead there's a sign that reads ICE was here. The priest was ordered to take it down by both U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement Acting Director Todd Lyons and the Archbishop of Boston. But the priest refused.
B
Nice.
A
He wants a conversation with Archbishop Richard Henning. And it sounds like the Archbishop would rather kiss Tim Lyons ring. I went to the Archdiocese of Boston website and found a contact form, ironically right next to their commitment to keeping children safe. If the Leguminati are so inclined, I bet we could remind the Archbishop what Jesus would do. Here is a link.
B
This is so good.
A
This is a really, really good one. And look at the kitties for podpet tariff. Anonymous thank you so much for this good trouble. We'll have a link to that contact form in the show notes as well as the news stor.
B
So good. Thank you. Thank you. All right, we get good news from Victory Lap. No pronouns given. A few episodes ago you mentioned Phil Williams's report on a Nazi who was targeting kids online. Well, Phil Williams posted this on Twitter. Accounts linked to neo Nazi John Manadio, founder of Goyim Defense League, now booted off Twitter. That's shocking. Twitter is lousy with Nazis, but at least there's one less now.
A
Wow, that is good news.
B
Thanks for I wonder what he did to piss Elon off because it is shocking that they would actually ban him.
A
Yeah, you want to take the next one? Because that was pretty short.
B
This is from Anonymous Pronoun she and her great news. I finally became a paid subscriber. Thank you, Anonymous.
A
Thank you.
B
I've been wanting to do it for a while, but Allison's donation was the gentle nudge that clinched it for me. A big shout out to my amazing husband who spent part of yesterday better insulating my beehives for the winter it gets very cold here in northwest Pennsylvania, and after losing one of my hives last year, I've been worrying about my girls. Thanks to him, that's one less thing on my mind. And the pod pet pic I'm sharing shows off his handiwork beautifully. I'm also including a picture of the two of us riding our tandem mountain bike, which we have named Harmony. That's so awesome. On trails at Jake's Rocks Overlook in the Allegheny. I hope that's Gross National Forest and There are over 30 miles of world class mountain biking trails. And we're so lucky to have this resource less than a two hour drive from our home. Our national forests are incredible, and I hope the current regime's ambitions won't ruin them for generations to come. Thank you all at MSW Media for so much of everything you do, keeping us informed while laughing, swearing, making the world feel a little lighter. You're amazing and I'm grateful for you every single day.
A
Okay, look, our listeners are just the coolest people they are.
B
As well as a tandem mountain bike would scare the shit out of me.
A
By the way, we have a beekeeper and a tandem bicycle named Harmony and a husband that helped insulate the bees to keep them safe in the winter.
B
Look at that. It's brilliant.
A
My gosh, that's so cool. Thanks for saving the bees. All right, next up, Kathleen Pronoun. She and her. Howdy, y'. All. I'm writing from very cold, very snowy southwest Michigan, where I just had the great joy of receiving one of the best massages I've ever had from Jenna at Tiger Lily Therapy. The business is in an old house In Kalamazoo, I think 1920s, built with gorgeous oak woodwork and a warm, cozy hippie vibe. The photo attached is the side of the house facing the parking lot, and it brings me great joy every time I see it. Also, I don't know if Jenna will hear this tribute, but I've had a lot of massages in my life and she is perhaps the best practitioner I've met. She's intuitive and kind, doesn't beat me up, but finds the sore spots and I leave feeling so much better. So between how I feel seeing the painting on the outside and how I feel after seeing Jenna on the inside, the beauty of Tiger Lily has brought me joy and has expanded my heart and I'm very grateful. What a wonderful shout out to a small business. Look at this mural.
B
That's awesome.
A
Oh, my goodness. That's gorgeous, Kathleen. Thank you. And thank you to Jenna at Tiger Lily Therapy in Kalamazoo. Yes.
B
All right. This is from Caleb Pronouns she and her after four long years of working full time and pursuing my Master's in public management, I will graduate in the spring. I recently wrote a reflection paper from my Advocacy, Activism and Organizing and Social Policy class and submitted it on the nose at 11:59pm that class and this podcast have kept me sane during the Tangerine Palpatine's term and have fueled my energy and passion for resistance. I have a shout out for Professor Slaughter Anouwu and good news. Her feedback on my paper made my week. She said, this is an exceptionally strong paper demonstrating depth, theoretical sophistication, ethical awareness and high quality writing. Mature, nuanced insight into activism, identity and civic engagement. Fuck yeah, Kayla.
A
Yeah, write a book, Kayla. Use that as a word. That's amazing.
B
My pot pet tariff is a photo of my dog Zev and cat Simmy, the besties I like to call my tiger babies. He is a 90 pound gentle giant and loves his 9 pound kitty. This is a beautiful dog. It's like a German shepherd mix and I don't know, German Shepherd. What else we have there? German sheep.
A
Malinois maybe? There's a lot here under the redaction bars. Yeah, so I'll say that. And a Chow Chow. And a bull terrier and a staffie maybe.
B
Maybe a Chihuahua was watching.
A
Maybe a Chihuahua was watching. Let's see. Jerk German Shepherd, Mastiff Lab, Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Surprisingly, the cat. Oh, big cats with Maine coon Rag doll, Russian Blue, Siberian and broadly. I wouldn't have guessed any of those looking at this little nine pound tabby.
B
Seriously.
A
Wow. So we got one. We got one. The German Shepherd.
B
We got the lead bread. The lead bread. The lead breed.
A
The lead breed. Anyway, thank you so much for that, Kayla. That's awesome. Next up, from Lisa G. Pronoun. She and her hey, blazingly brilliant Beans babes. After a dozen years in the biz, I'm retiring from my company, Courageous Soap as of January 2026. Hubs and I recently purchased a Ford Transit van and the birds in this country aren't gonna watch themselves.

What a shit show. For my pod pet tariff, here's pics of me and Vern the horse at a holiday artisan market held in a barn, both charming and freezing. Also, here's a pic of some items in stock. I keep hoping I can take certain political ones out of rotation, but. But needs be. The patriarchy is sun setting way too slowly, but it is happening. Thank you for all you do, ladies. Putting together all the podcast videos, substacks, fundraisers, etc, is amazeballs. We're lucky to have you on our side.
B
Look at how beautiful these soaps are.
A
Gorgeous soaps. Blue wave soap, Essential work soap, spark, joy. Oh, I love these. Sunset. So good of the patriarchy. Badass queen. Beautiful soaps. Courageous soaps, everybody check them out. And look at that beautiful picture of you and the horse in the barn for the market. Fantastic. Love it. Yep, birds aren't going to watch themselves. Thank you all so much for your good news. It means the world to us. And yeah, we just really appreciate you. We have the coolest listeners, Dana.
B
We really do. So talented, so caring, so empathic. We really do have just a loving, empathic group we've built here.
A
Yeah, I think so. I think so. And you know, a large, A large part of that has to do with all the amazing work you do, my friend.
B
Oh, I appreciate that. I do appreciate that. I was asking Allison at breakfast today, I was like, how do you do this? And just so you know, everyone, even though I'm still very concerned, not as concerned anymore. Allison really does structure her day in a way that prioritizes self care and makes sure that she has the hours in the day that she needs just so she can function through the rest of the week. But also bring you the news and all three of her podcasts. So just know she is taking care of herself and we can still worry about her. But I don't want you to lose sleep worrying about her when she's actually doing what you all should be doing at home. And that's more self care.
A
I did. I got the third degree. Dana was like, you need to tell me what how you structure your day. I need to make sure that you're taking care of yourself.
I was like, well.
I went through the whole thing. And she's like, okay, that's acceptable.
B
Yep.
A
If you need anything, you let me know. It was awesome. Thank you so much, my friend.
