All right, first up, from Tony Rahm at the Post. Elon Musk on Wednesday called for the elimination of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, one of the nation's most powerful watchdog agencies, signaling it could be scrapped as part of a planned review of government spending ordered by President Elect Donald Trump. Quote, delete cfpb, Musk said in an early morning post on Twitter, his social media site, the one that he owns, categorizing the bureau as an example of, quote, too many duplicative regulatory agencies in Washington. Formed in the wake of the 2008 banking crisis, the CFPB has a broad mandate to protect Americans from unfair, deceptive or predatory financial practices. Its current director, Rohit Chopra, a Democrat, has recently issued rules meant to shield people from medical debt, making it easier for them to switch banks and limiting the fees they face from falling behind on their credit card bills. Since its founding, the CFPB has secured more than $19 billion in consumer relief. That's to us, while penalizing large financial institutions and technology firms for allegedly mishandling America's money. Its oversight has often stoked the ire of the nation's biggest banks and billionaires, credit card companies and other lenders, which have sued the bureau repeatedly over charges of regulatory over reach. Musk did not elaborate on his personal objections to the cfpb, and he did not immediately respond to a request for comment. But his opposition is significant, as he works to set up the Department of Government Efficiency, a new entity outside of the government that has encouraged Trump to sidestep Congress and push the limits of executive power once he's in office. The billionaire owner of SpaceX and Tesla registered his disapproval in response to comments by Mark and Dreeson, a Silicon Valley venture capitalist who faulted the CFPB on a podcast this week for, quote, terrorizing financial institutions. Andreessen is a Trump supporter and donor who is advising Musk and his outside organization, known as Doge, which is co led by a fellow tech entrepreneur and fraudster, Vivek Ramaswamy. Andreessen's firm has backed a number of financial technology companies under CFPB's watch in a series of enforcement actions that predate Trump's first term. The agency in 2021 notably shuttered Lend Up Lo, alleging it misled customers about its short term high rate loans and overcharged military service members. At the time, the CFPB specifically highlighted that the company was backed by investors, including the Andreessen Horowitz venture capital firm. A spokesman for Andreessen's firm did not respond immediately to requests for comment, and the CFPB also did not immediately respond to a request. Brian Hughes, a spokesman for the Trump transition team, did not respond to questions about the president elect's views on the cfpb, but said in a statement that Doge would, quote, target waste and fraud throughout our massive federal bureaucracy. No Doge is going to strip away regulations, fire millions of people, including tons of veterans, and keep all that money for themselves. Quote, they will work together slashing excess regulations, cutting wasteful expenditures and restructuring federal agencies, he added. Privately, Trump's TOPS aides have considered new candidates to lead the cfpb, who are expected to soften its crackdown on the financial industry. That's according to the Post previously reporting there. Some of the president's former aides, meanwhile, have called for the bureau to be totally abolished entirely as part of the conservative blueprint known as Project 2025. The ideas have broad support among Republicans on Capitol Hill, some of whom have signaled they will pursue their own new limits to the CFPB's powers and funding once the party assumes control of the House and the Senate next year, Trump does not necessarily require help from Congress to neuter the bureau. Its next director has the power to rescind recent rules, terminate ongoing investigations and settle pending lawsuits, and scale back the agency's enforcement. Early in Trump's first term, the CFPB at one point requested a budget of $0, part of an effort to under then interim Director Mick Mulvaney to defang the agency. Unlike other federal offices, the CFPB is funded by transfers from the Federal Reserve, a move meant to insulate the watchdog from political infighting and lobbying pressure. And we'll keep an eye on it for you. Next up from Hadass Gold at cnn When President elect Donald Trump said Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy would recommend major cuts to the federal government, many public Employees knew that their jobs were probably going to be on the line. Now they have a new fear becoming the personal targets of the world's richest man and his legions of followers. Last week, in the midst of the flurry of his daily missives, Musk reposted two Twitter posts that revealed the names and titles of people holding four relatively obscure climate related government positions. Each post has been viewed tens of millions of times and the individuals named have been subjected to a barrage of negative attention. At least one of the four women named has deleted her social media accounts altogether. Although the information he posted on these government positions is available through public online databases, these posts target otherwise unknown government employees in roles that do not deal directly with the public. Several current federal employees told CNN they're afraid their lives will be forever changed, including physically threatened, as Musk makes behind the scenes bureaucrats into personal targets. Others told CNN that the threat of being in Musk's crosshairs might even drive them from their jobs entirely, achieving Musk's smaller government goals without so much as a proper review. Quote these tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees. That's Everett Kelly, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 8 of the 2.3 million civilian federal employees. Quote, it's intended to make them fearful that they will become afraid to speak up. This isn't new behavior for Musk, who has often singled out individuals who he claims have made mistakes or stand in his way. One former federal employee previously targeted by Musk said she's experiencing something very similar. Quote it's his way of intimidating people to either quit or also send a signal to all the other agencies that you're next. That's Mary Missy Cummings, an engineering and computer science professor at George Mason University who drew Musk's ire because of her criticisms of Tesla when she was at the National Highway Traffic Safety Admission. Last week, Musk reported an account with the handle Fentasil and the name Data Hazard, which describes itself as unincorporated think tank Focus Government Efficiency, civil rights, victim advocacy, unquote. And one of the posts reads, I don't think the US taxpayer should pay for the employment of a director of climate diversification. She her at the US International Development Finance Corporation. With a partial screen grab of an employee and her location. Musk, who called himself Super Pro Climate in a Twitter post last year, reposted and commented so many fake jobs. This post has received more than 33 million views and a storm of negative comments. Some called the role a fraud job. Others demanded Musk's Department of Government efficiency cut jobs like it, one user commented. Gravy train is over. It appears the woman Musk targeted has since gone dark on social media, shutting down her accounts. The agency, the U.S. international Development Finance Corporation, says it supports investment in climate mitigation, resilience and adaptation in low income countries experiencing the most devastating effects of climate change. A DFC official said the agency does not comment on individual personnel positions or matters. Musk also called out the Department of Energy's chief climate officer in its loan programs office. The office funds fledgling energy technologies in need of early investment and awarded $465 million to Tesla in 2010, helping to position Musk's electric vehicle company as an EV industry leader. The chief climate officer works across agencies to, quote, reduce barriers and enable clean energy deployment, according to her online bio. Another woman who serves as senior advisor on the Environmental justice and climate Change at the Department of Health and Human Services was another Musk target. HHS focuses on protecting the public health from pollution and other environmental hazards, especially in low income communities and communities of color that are experiencing a higher share of exposure and impacts. The office first launched at Health and Human Services under the Biden administration in 2022. A senior advisor to climate at the Department of Housing and Urban Development was also singled out. The original EX post said the woman should not be paid $181,648 by the US taxpayers to be the climate advisor at HUD. Musk reposted with the comment maybe her advice is amazing, followed by two laughing emojis. CNN reached out to all four federal employees who either declined to comment or were unable to be reached. CNN has also reached out to hhs, Department of Energy and HUD for comment. Twitter did not respond to an email seeking comment. The AFGE public union pointed out that as a federal contractor, Musk himself has benefited from government programs with $750 billion per year spent on federal contractors compared to about 200 billion for the civilian federal workforce. Quote, we are a comparative steel and we want to help clean it up too, he said. Musk has done this kind of thing before and it's led to real danger for the people named Missy Cummings angered Musk when she was appointed a senior advisor at the NHTSA because her research and public comments were critical of Tesla's driver assist programs and she had called for regulating the systems. Musk targeted Cummings on what was then called Twitter and his legions of fans followed. In an interview, Cummings said she received a torrent of attacks, including death threats and had to temporarily relocate before she eventually moved. Cummings said she already knows of federal employees who, quote, have dedicated their lives to civil service, already quitting their jobs in anticipation of what's to come. Quote, he intended for them for people just like this to be intimidated and just go ahead and quit so he doesn't have to fire them. So his plan to some extent is working, she said. CNN reached out to multiple experts and academics who specialize in cyber harassment, doxing and online abuse, but several declined to comment on the record for fear of themselves becoming Musk's targets. Quote, what has happened has an incredible and horrific chilling effect, one of them said. Another said they're not surprised with Musk's reposts, adding, they're an example of a classic pattern of cyber harassment. Ramaswamy didn't respond to questions singling out individual federal employees, but told cnn, quote, most federal employees, like most human beings, are fundamentally good people and deserve to be treated with respect. But the real problem is the bureaucracy. Our opponent is not any particular individual. Our opponent is the bureaucracy, he added in a follow up post. The Fentasil account, which itself is Anonymous, wrote, it goes without saying that you should not harass someone solely because they hold a senior government plum job. That should probably not exist. But senior government officials are not mere rank and file employees. We deserve to know who's running our government and what they do. Cummings, who was also one of the first female fighter pilots in the U.S. navy, said she felt an obligation to speak out. She said, somebody has got to speak out. I'm just not going to let him win on this point. And from Julie Carr Smyth at the Dayton Daily, a local publication. Support your local News Transgender students from kindergarten through college at Ohio public and private schools will be banned from using multi person bathrooms that fit their gender identities under a measure that Republican Gov. Mike DeWine said Wednesday that that he has signed. DeWine signed the law over the objections of Democrats, teachers unions and civil rights groups, which had hoped that his objections to the ban on gender affirming care for minors last year would carry through and prompt another veto. But nope, it takes effect in 90 days. The governor issued no statement. The Republican backed measure, labeled the Protect All Students act, requires public and private schools, colleges and universities to designate separate bathrooms, locker rooms and overnight accommodations for the exclusive use of either males and females based on one's gender assigned at or near birth in school buildings and other facilities used for school sponsored events. It contains no enforcement mechanism. It revolves, quote around safety, security and I think common sense. It protects our children and grandchildren in private spaces where they're most vulnerable. That's Republican Ohio State Senator Jerry Sereno, the bill's sponsor. I hope I'm pronouncing that incorrectly. School employees, emergency situations and people assisting young children or someone with a disability are exempted from the restrictions, and schools can still offer single use or family bathrooms, aaron Baer, president of center for Christian Virtue, which backed the bill, said in a statement. Common sense is on a winning streak in America today. No student should be forced to go into a bathroom or locker room with a student of the opposite sex, and Ohio's kids are better protected now because of Governor DeWine's decision to sign this bill. The ACLU of Ohio was among the groups that had lobbied for a veto, condemning the measure as a violation of the rights of privacy for LGBTQ +Ohioans and it will make them less safe. Equality Ohio, the state's LGBTQ advocacy and legal aid organization, said the law poses risks to transgender youth or anyone perceived as transgender by authorities. We are deeply disappointed that Governor DeWine has allowed this dangerous bill to become law that puts vulnerable trans youth at risk for abuse and harassment. That's Executive director Dwayne Steward in a the group said it will continue to fight for a state that embraces and respects all its residents. With DeWine's signature, Ohio adds to the pushback that cropped up nationally among Republican politicians, including Trump, as transgender people have gained more visibility and acceptance on some fronts in recent years. 26 states have now adopted laws restarting or banning gender affirming care for transgender minors. The U.S. supreme Court is scheduled to hear arguments Dec. 4 on whether Tennessee's ban on such treatments can continue to be enforced. Any ruling is likely to impact policies in other states, too. At least 11 states have adopted laws like Ohio's barring transgender girls and women from girls and women's bathrooms at public schools and in some cases, in other government facilities. And at least 24 states have laws dictating which sports competitions transgender girls and women can join. Ohio's bathroom bill was debated for 19 months before finally clearing the GOP led legislature on November 13 during transgender awareness Week. It was tacked onto a separate piece of legislation by the Ohio House. It related to the state's College Credit plus program, which allows high schoolers to earn college credit. Trump's campaign leaned heavily into opposing transgender rights in the final week of his race against Vice President Kamala Harris, including Trump's vow at Madison Square Garden that, quote, we will keep men out of women's sports and the campaign ad saying Kamala's for they them. President Trump is for you. It's not clear what policies Trump might adopt once he takes office, but bills relating to gender issues are already being queued up in the state legislatures that come into session in early 2020. In Texas, for instance, there are proposed measures to bar using state money to pay for gender reassignment. That's in quotes. I wouldn't use that term to use states money to pay to reverse gender transitions and to give people who receive gender affirming care before they turn 15 until their 25th birthday to sue their doctors for malpractice. Democrats in Republican dominated legislature in Texas have also introduced some bills intended to protect people from discrimination on the basis of gender identity or expression. In Ohio, a law that both bars gender affirming care for minors and blocks transgender girls and women from participating in girls and women's sports competitions took effect in August. It took a rocky path, though. The measure became a law only after the legislature overrode DeWine's veto of that bill and after that, a judge put enforcement on hold for about four months before allowing it. And our last story comes from Ryan Reilly at NBC. A former FBI informant whose false claims about President Joe Biden and his son Hunter were at the heart of the Republican impeachment inquir inquiry against the president, has now been indicted on tax charges. Alexander Smirnoff, the former FBI informant charged with lying to the FBI about President Joe Biden and his son has now been indicted on 10 separate tax related felony charges. The new indictment states that Smirnoff, quote, received more than $2 million in income from multiple sources in 2021, 2020 and 2022 and bought a 4 $1.4 million Las Vegas condominium, a Bentley and hundreds of thousands of dollars in clothes, jewelry and accessories for himself and a domestic partner purchased at high end retailers in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. Smirnoff's attorneys, David Chesnoff and Richard Schonfield, said he intends to vigorously fight these allegations with the same intensity he fought the original indictment. The charges against Smirnoff, who has been a confidential human source for the FBI since 2010, were brought by David Weiss, the special counsel on the Hunter Biden case, which resulted in convictions on gun charges in June and tax charges in September before Smirnoff was indicted. Rep. Jim Jordan of Ohio said his claims were at the heart of the Republicans impeachment inquiry against the president in February. Federal prosecutors said Smirnoff claimed some of his information came from, quote, officials associated with Russian intelligence. Oh, weird. Prosecutors said Smirnoff was, quote, actively peddling new lies that could impact US Elections after meeting with Russian intelligence officials in November of 2023. Russia had sought to aid Trump's campaign and even paid right wing influencers, according to a separate indictment returned last September. We told you about one that one had to do with Tim Pool and his buddies Benny Johnson at tenant media. U.S. district Judge Otis Wright also issued an order in Smirnoff's false statements case today ahead of trial. That is now set to get underway January 8, 2025. All right, everybody, stick around. Everything@dailybeanspod.com and click on contact. First up from anonymous Pronouns he and him hello beautiful beans Ladies, this is part self shout out, partial group shout. On October 24th, I drove up to Stratton Mountain in Vermont. At 6:00am on a Friday morning, I and almost 300 others started the 29029 challenge. 29029 is the height of Mount Everest. So for 36 hours we climbed Stratton Mountain for up to 17 times to simulate climbing Mount Everest. 60% completed it. An old ankle problem slowed me down so I only made 13 climbs. But I pushed through the pain to make the 13 which is the height of Akonkagua. I'm butchering the pronunciation of that. That's the highest mountain in South America at 22,841ft. Pictured is me climbing and one looking back during the first climb at 6am to see the line of fellow climbers with their headlamps lighting up the trail. And finally for pod Pet Tax is a friend at the Bronx Zoo checking me out. This is so cool. I didn't know that they did this. And and and let's see a concag. You're going to have to write in Anonymous and tell me how to pronounce that. That's an incredible scene. And then the gorilla at the zoo is like what's up? Amazing. Thank you so much for that. Next up from Jennifer Pronouns she and her hi AG and Dana. Can I ask you to give my small business a shout out? I make cat beds. I created the Cat Ball registered trademark, a hexagonal cave style cat bed with two openings. Cats love our bed and most cats understand immediately how to use it. My business tagline is your cat will figure it out. I love it. It's not easy to start or run a business and along the way we've dealt with intellectual property infringement, leukemia, losing cherished pets, supply chain problems, and most recently the recent bomb cyclone in Washington that completely halted our shipping. The cat beds are all my original design and we make everything in Washington State. My website is thecatball.com I appreciate your sanity and your hard working team and Jennifer, these make excellent holiday gifts. I love the hex bed, the Cat Ball, the hexagonal cat cave style bed. These are really really beautiful. Again everybody that's in Washington state TheCatball.com but I'm sure you ship nationwide. Next up from Dan Pronouns, he and him. Hey, I just wanted to say how much I love the catharsis and joy AG and DG bring me daily my good news. After six years, I finished the final draft of my crime police novel and I'm starting to seek a literary agent. Dan, this is so fucking cool. My pod tax is Frida, my brown tabby who rescued me three years ago and graciously allows me to pay the rent, feed her, and change her litter. She likes to be tossed on the bed and have her hind parts lifted by her tail. Really, Dan, I believe you. I had a cat that loved that too. What a beautiful baby. And congratulations on finishing your novel. I'm so excited for you. Keep us posted. Next up from Patti B. My personal good news. Theater is my happy place. I just distracted myself by flying from California to New York and seeing six count em, six Broadway and Off Broadway shows in four days. I also passed the striking New York Times workers and took a moment to express my support for them. Okay, fine, fine. You caught me. My good news is really just an excuse to share this photo. I went out of my way to photograph this specific bird on the eve of the election because, well, I don't think we need to explain why. As always, thank you to the entire Beans crew for keeping us both informed and sane. You're all national treasures here. You are flipping off Trump Tower and I am willing to bet I have some of these pictures in my arsenal of me flipping off Trump properties. Send in your birds. Send in you flipping the birds. We're going to count this as pod pet tax because they're birds, so send in you flipping off Trump properties. I would love to see it. I know everybody's got one of these photos on their phone somewhere, probably as long as you've passed in front of a Trump property at least. So send those to us as well. Next up, from Susan M. She her good morning favorite pod. Because Thanksgiving is here and because life's hard right now and when the blues try to sing louder than the funny, I'd like to share what I'm grateful for. I'm grateful for all the amazing individuals and groups out there who are working at keeping what's left of our sanity and our fractured democracy intact. Dg, I'm grateful for your amazing fundraising and for the human rights campaign in the queer community, both of which my boy, both of which both my kids belong, and talent for funny. Thank you dg. Both have had such a positive impact on so many people. Thank you for making people laugh even when you can't hold back your tears. I'm grateful to AG for your relentless search for the truth and Bringing it to a government that we no longer trust in terms that they even understand. I'm grateful for my kids for being wonderful human beings who might make a light shine in the darkest moments by being two of the funniest people I've ever known. And for always holding true to who they are. I've included a photo of each of them. The photo of my daughter is her being brave and trying to conquer her fear of babies. As you can see, it's not working. The photo of my son never fails to make me laugh because. Well, just because. And a shout out to Beowulf Rochlin for his new pod. Good news for lefties and America. The title says it all. My pod tax is our Siberian husky, Luna in her happy place. Yep, she's as defiant as she looks, and we wouldn't have her any other way. Okay, that's it. Wishing you both a wonderful Thanksgiving. And just say fuck it and eat all you want. Love, peace and gluttony, because next year we might not be able to afford it. Shit. I was working so hard at being positive, too, Susan. And thank you. And these photos are great. Oh, wonderful. That's a great submission. Thanks for sharing all that and all your gratitude. And thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate it. All right, next up, from Roxy Pronoun. She and her. Oh, look at this Pupper. I wanted to share something I'm thankful for this Thanksgiving. Two years ago this month, my parents rushed their pup, Frida, to the emergency vet when she lost the use of her back legs. The vet operated and removed an infection that was pressing on her spinal cord. For the first few months, we weren't sure she'd ever walk again. My folks didn't give up, and neither did Frida. After wagging through two years of physical therapy, special kennels and custom ramps, she will be joining us at our annual Thanksgiving hike. She's the perfect mix of at least a dozen breeds, but see if you can guess the top one. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone. There's still plenty to be thankful for in the world. Oh, gosh. She looks like a. I don't. I don't know, a Roddy, the German Shepherd. All right, let's see. Smooth Collie. Okay, I should, because she looks like a Lassie dog, but she didn't have any of the fur, so I didn't even know they had Smooth Collies out there. Amazing. Beautiful Pupper. Thanks to everyone for sending in your good news. So, on top of all the other good news you can send in, please send in photos of you flipping off Trump properties. It brings me joy and I appreciate all of our new listeners. Thanks so much for joining us. I will be back in your ears tomorrow. I have recorded an all new episode of the Daily Beans with all brand new content and Fugal Saying will be with me for Fugal Saying Friday we will have the Pete cleanup on aisle 45.
