Jelly beans. Jelly beans. Daily beans. Daily Beans.
Alison Gill
Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Friday, March 13, 2026. Today, an armed man was shot by security after ramming his vehicle into a synagogue in a Detroit suburb. The 4th Department of Homeland Security funding bill has failed in the Senate. The White House's financial disclosures for top officials are incomplete. Attorney General Pam Bondi has been moved into free military housing. Veterans affairs is drafting plans to institutionalize homeless veterans against their will. Senator John Cornyn has started sucking up to President Trump by endorsing killing the filibuster to pass the SAVE Act. And a federal judge has blocked construction of a concentration camp warehouse in Williamsport, Maryland. I'm Alison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Alison Gill
Hey, my friend. Happy Friday. Welcome back.
Dana Goldberg
Thank you. Thanks for covering me last night. Had a really, just an amazing show in Nashville. It's so funny. Cause even some of the guests were like, why Nashville? How did you end up here? And I'm like, why not? Like this is a great community. But I gotta tell you, ag, there was a table that flew in from Chicago or drove in from Chicago. Chicago, if you're listening. And I didn't get a chance to meet you. It made my night. I had people. There was a woman that flew in from Oklahoma, some people drove in from Memphis. It was just a really joyful night of community. And I had two comedians open up for me, Tara Brown and Sean Flanagan. And they were like, that was one of the most Affirming safe rooms I have ever performed in in my life.
Alison Gill
Incredible.
Dana Goldberg
And it just made me feel good. Then when I didn't get to shout out on stage was Phil Williams. And I felt so bad that I didn't. He was sitting front row and the nosiest bitch in Nashville. And so Phil, if you are listening to this, by the way, and he was there with I believe his wife possibly. It was just a great, it was really, it was a great show. And there you. I had fans, some of our listeners that came and gave me a hug that have 10 year old trans kids that they're trying to raise in Tennessee. They're out there doing the fucking work. And I'm just so impressed with all of you people that came in from Memphis. There's organizations, all these blue dots in these red states just really fighting the battles way harder than we have to in California and New York. And my respect and my hat just goes off to you. So thank you for being on the front lines.
Alison Gill
Just amazing that, you know, first of all the affirmation, the creation of the safe space, the recognition of that, the representation, just amazing. And I'm sure, like there was much fun had by all. There was probably quite a bit of swearing. Phil, you sent me the picture of you and Phil. I was like, it's Phil.
Dana Goldberg
He's so sweet. I know. I gotta get that thing up. On Blueski.
Alison Gill
On Blueski, which is what we're calling it now. Also, it is Friday here on the Daily Beans, which means later in the show I'm gonna be talking with John Fue. And I recorded that interview a little bit earlier today and I kind of get a little ranty. Not about John, but about this war in Iran and all of the other things that it touches and the spending at the Pentagon. Dana, yesterday we went over Pete Kegseth spending $93 billion in September of last year alone just so he can justify his bloated budget at the Pentagon. Spending money on lobster tail and crab legs. I piano a hundred thousand dollars Steinway for the Air Force guy for his house. Just absolutely bonkers spending just to justify Meanwhile, you know, $93 billion in a month on luxury bullshit. And meanwhile, at the same time we were cutting SNAP benefit, we were kicking kids off Snap and you know, refusing to extend the ACA subsidies, jacking up everybody's healthcare premiums. Now oil is through the roof. It's just frustrating.
Dana Goldberg
I read something that our dear friend Charlotte Clymer put out with in regards to the spending because everyone was like, what the Fuck Hexeth. Lobster and steak. But the thing is, and this is what Charlotte said, which made a lot of sense, and you'll. You'll probably understand this, a lot of the lobster and steak was for the military because they usually, before they deploy troops, give them the quote, unquote last meal. Like, they take care of them. They sort of wine and dine them. So Charlotte believes that a lot of that money that went on steak and lobster was because of this stupid fucking war that should have never happened. And the fact that we may have boots on the ground soon. That's why that spending should terrify us. That other stuff. Bullshit. But a lot of that food apparently went to the troops because they may be getting ready to deploy.
Alison Gill
Yeah, 15 million on ribeye in September. And so again, that just undercuts the argument that Iran is some sort of imminent threat. Now we've got the Strait of Hormuz shut down. They're laying mines. That could mean ground war. In order to get that opened up was a release of our emergency reserve. 400 million barrels of oil that hasn't made a dent. Nope. The only thing that made a dent in oil prices is when Energy Secretary Chris Wright went out, lied, and said that the Navy ship had escorted a tanker through the Strait of Hormuza, then quickly took it off. I'm sure a bunch of people. The White House bought the dip when that tweet went out. But then oil prices shot right back up again.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Alison Gill
Also credit where credit is due. For the fourth time in as many weeks, Senators voted down a bill Thursday to fund the Department of Homeland Security and then left town for the weekend, ensuring that the agency remains shuttered past the one month mark, come today, Friday.
Dana Goldberg
Okay, there you go. Before that vote, by the way, Republicans objected to multiple requests from Senate Democrats to pass a series of narrower bills that would cover specific agencies like tsa, the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, the Code, Coast Guard, fema. So Republicans are on board as the ones causing long lines at the airport. It's not the Democrats. We tried to fund these things, so. Well done. Again, Senate Democrats. Credit where credit is due. Well, all but one. Guess who it is. I'll just give you one guess. He likes. Maybe he likes to. He likes casual every day. Not casual Friday, but, like casual every day.
Alison Gill
Is it John Fetterman?
Dana Goldberg
I believe it's John Fetterman. Well done. Ding, ding, ding. Tell her what she's won, John.
Alison Gill
She's won long lines at the airport.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, no kidding.
Alison Gill
Yeah, but it was good to say, hey, we'll fund, let's fund tsa, fema, Coast Guard, cisa, Cybersecurity Infrastructure Security Agency. Let's fund those. And the Republicans are like, no. All right, then this is on you. This is on you. All right, everybody, we have a lot of news to get to. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. First up from the Associated Press. An attacker armed with a rifle rammed his vehicle into one of the nation's largest Reform synagogues Thursday, driving through a hallway as security opened fire, fatally shooting him. The vehicle caught fire after crashing into the Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township, which is just outside of Detroit, Michigan. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard says fortunately none of the synagogue staff or the children at its early childhood center were injured.
Dana Goldberg
Thank goodness.
Alison Gill
Quote, he was traveling with purpose down the hall from my look at the video, he said. Now investigators are still working to identify the man and a motive. And that's according to a person who could not publicly discuss the details of the investigation and spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. That person cautioned that the investigation is still in its early stages, but again, quote, no kids and no staff were injured whatsoever. That's what Bouchard said. He said one security officer was hit by the vehicle and knocked unconscious but did not suffer life threatening injuries. The synagogue has multiple security officers, he said, and at least one fired at the suspect who was found dead inside the vehicle. Synagogues around the world, Dana, have been on edge and have been ramping up security since the US And Israel launched a war with Iran with missile strikes on February 28. The FBI has warned that Iranian operatives may be planning drone attacks on targets in California. Two men brought explosives to a far right protest outside the New York mayoral mansion on Saturday. Investigators alleged they were inspired by the Islamic State extremist group and an assailant drove a car into people outside an Orthodox synagogue in Manchester, England, on Yom Kippur. That's the holiest day of the Jewish calendar. That guy stabbed two people to death before officer shot and killed him. On Thursday, the Oakland County Sheriff's Office cleared the building and about a dozen parents sprinted to get their children from an early childhood learning center that was inside West Bloomfield School District went on lockdown. Samuel Bennett, whose wife was in the building, said he was deeply relieved to learn she and everyone else were okay. Quote, I don't even know what the words are. That's what he told WDIV television on scene.
Dana Goldberg
Thank you so much, Allison. This next story is from the Times Attorney General Pam Bondi has quietly relocated to one of several military bases in Washington area where other Trump administration officials have been taking cover. I'm sorry. Also live after facing threats from drug cartels and critics of her actions in handling the Epstein files. The Epstein case, that's according to people familiar with the situation. Ms. Bondi moved from an apartment in the city within the past month in response to an array of threats flagged to her staff by federal law enforcement. This is what the people said, including an uptick in criticism of Ms. Bondi and threats relayed by investigators. One catalyst was an increase in threats following the capture and prosecution of President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela in January, according to a senior official with direct knowledge of the situation who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Discussed security matters. Pam is the latest administration official to move into heavily guarded quarters at military facilities in or near the nation's capital after citing danger from criminals, adversaries overseas and protesters. Other officials who have relocated. Stephen Miller. Shocking. The president's top domestic policy advisor and a Nazi vampire and the architect of his hardline immigration policy. We've got Marco Rubio, apparently the Secretary of State, Kristi Noem, although that's, I think, changing. The existing Homeland Security secretary. Not anymore. And Defense Secretary Pete Kegseth. This appears to be the first administration to take such widespread advantage of taxpayer funded military housing to accommodate political appointees who do not have direct connection to the military, according to former officials and historians. So all on our dime, everybody. They're doing fucked up stuff. So now we have to be their protection. That's basically what it is. We are keeping them safe and they're putting the rest of us in danger. It's some bullshit.
Alison Gill
Some bullshit. And I am willing to bet that the majority of the threats toward Pam Bondi, Pamela Joe are coming from applicants 100%. 100% upset about her handling of the Epstein files.
Dana Goldberg
I would agree.
Alison Gill
Yeah, I don't have any confirmation on that, but I bet the Burbank put some beans on it. Next up from NBC. Just a week ago, I said here on the beans, Dana, you'll remember I said we should watch for Senator John Cornyn kissing Trump's ass extra hard since he was thrown into a runoff to save his Senate seat. Actually, I think I have a clip from that March 5 episode of the Daily Beans. Let's listen. James Talarico did win that Senate primary in Texas, and Jasmine Crockett conceded this morning gracefully and threw all her weight behind Talarico. And also in the Republican Side, Wesley Hunt forced an expensive and contentious runoff between Republicans John Cornyn and Ken Paxton. And it'll be interesting to watch Cornyn have to kiss Trump's ass now. And Trump will have to throw Paxton under the bus, who's been kissing his ass forever in the coming months. Because I guarantee you the Republicans do not want Talarico going up against Paxton. Everyone hates that guy. Well, it didn't take long. It's been less than a week. And now NBC is reporting that John Cornyn is reversing himself on the filibuster after years of unflinching support for the 60 vote threshold. Now locked in a competitive Republican runoff for a Senate seat and eyeing President Trump's endorsement, Cornyn says he'll support whatever changes to Senate rules that may prove necessary to pass the SAVE Act, a bill that will disenfranchise millions of voters and also targets trans people. A lot of people are leaving that part out. Yeah. Corin's comments are part of an op ed he wrote for the New York Post. That wonderful, solid, rock solid thing that we see, it's source that we cite all the time. The New York Post. His, his, his op ed is called why the SAVE act matters more than the Filibuster.
Dana Goldberg
Why my job needs to be saved.
Alison Gill
Why my ass matters more than a hole in the ground. Ridiculous. But I do appreciate that he called it the SAVE act and not the Save America act, which I hope makes sense. Donald Trump. Now, Cornyn supports the bill, but his GOP runoff opponent, Ken Paxton, has aligned with Trump in calling for abolition of the filibuster to pass it and criticized Cornyn for refusing to take the same stance. So Ken Paxton's like, I was against the filibuster to pass the SAVE act first. I mean, it's just gotten down to it's really ridiculous playground name calling, ass kissing. Now, NBC News reported Tuesday that Trump had seemed ready to endorse Cornyn in the race just a week ago, but that the President's decision is now in a holding pattern, as Trump emphasizes that Congress must do everything in its power to pass the Save America Act. So he's withholding his endorsement. And I'm pretty sure he was doing that less than until Cornyn flipped on his very long standing.
Dana Goldberg
100%.
Alison Gill
Yeah. So Cornyn denied Wednesday that he shifted his position on the filibuster to win Trump's endorsement. He said to NBC News, I would say that's not true. Oh, you would say it's not true. Okay. But it is. Quote after careful consideration, I support whatever changes to the Senate rules that may prove necessary for us to get the SAVE act and Homeland Security funding past the Democrats. Obstruction through the Senate and on the president's desk for a signature. That's what he wrote in the New York Post. But when Democrats floated changes to the filibuster in the past, Cornyn strenuously defended it. Like in 2022 when Democrats wanted to pass the Freedom to Vote Act. Right. Like something that is the opposite of the Save America act, something that makes it easier to vote in this country. Cornyn was dead set against it. Quote, liberal activists may like the idea of nuking the filibuster today, but they'll soon find themselves ruing the day that their party broke the Senate. That's what he said just a couple years ago. He said in another speech that same month, not only are our colleagues trying to seize the authority given under the Constitution to the states to manage their own elections, they're willing to take a wrecking ball to the United States Senate itself and particularly the Senate rules. And he defended it on Fox News that same year, quote, that's what the filibuster does. It requires us to work together. That's what he said. Asked Wednesday specifically about his past statements that changing the filibuster would take a wrecking ball to the Senate, Cornyn replied, I said I'd be open to reforms. No, you didn't. No, you didn't. Piece of that. When asked follow up questions, Cornyn just put his hand in front of the NBC News camera and said, go away. So he knows, yeah, Texas, you cannot vote for this chicken shit bootlicker. Kick him out. Put James Talarico in his seat. Or better yet, everyone in the runoff vote for Paxton.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, my God, that would be fantastic.
Alison Gill
Republicans do not want, as I said in that clip from last week, they do not want Paxton going up against Talarico.
Dana Goldberg
I know he'll get his ass whooped. All right, everyone. Next up from Notice the American public does not have a complete picture of senior Trump administration officials personal finances. And there's no telling when they will. Months after posting disclosures. Yeah. On the White House website, the Trump administration does not appear to have sent the financial information from some top White House officials to the Office of Government Ethics for a second and often more serious review. Oge said the office publicly posts disclosures from all officials 30 days after receiving them. There are currently no disclosures for top officials like border czar Tom Holman. Really, the guy who likes to take bribes no, there's no $50,000.
Alison Gill
Guy didn't put financial disclosures Shocking House
Dana Goldberg
of Representatives liaison Jeffrey Freeland available on OGE's disclosure database okay, now notice has identified at least five top officials whose disclosures are missing from the OGE's database by comparing ethics laws with the salaries and positions of White House staffers. There is no public list of senior White House officials required to face OGE preview of their finances, but most White House senior staff who have salaries above $150,000 are likely required to have their disclosures assessed for accuracy and completeness by oge. That's according to the rules under the Ethics Government act of 1978. Holman, as we know, is a senior officer with a salary well over that cap, making about $195,000 in 2025 if you don't add the $50,000 that he was given in a bag. His disclosure on the White House website does not been updated since May of 2025, even though OGE requires the White House ethics office to promptly forward completed financial disclosures for review. A White House official said nothing is being withheld, but notice found several missing documents and notices. Some things are being withheld 3 of 9 disclosures shared at OGE in January of this year for Jared Agun Agin, the executive director of the National Energy Dominance Council Stanley Woodward, who served as senior counselor to Trump until November, and Trent Morse, who served as deputy director of Trump's personal office until September. They were not available on the White House's website as of early February after Notice asked the White House about those missing disclosure forms. The disclosures for Agent and Morse were added to the website in mid February. Oh these magic no, the oge. Oh these keys. OGE could eventually decline to certify some of the nine White House disclosures it received in early January. It could also decline to certify disclosures that are missing entirely, such as those for like Holman and Freeland.
Alison Gill
Did you say oh, did you mean these keys?
Dana Goldberg
Oh, did you mean this key?
Alison Gill
I have no gate key.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, you mean this? Tear off his legs.
Alison Gill
Tear his arm off.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, you mean this gate key?
Alison Gill
Next up from the Times, the Trump administration on Wednesday announced a new effort to initiate legal guardianship for veterans, including some who are homeless or at risk of homelessness that can be used to force more of them into involuntary or institutional care. This is nightmare fuel. Under the new arrangement, the Justice Department would give VA officials authority they currently lack to initiate guardianship proceedings in state courts for veterans who have no family and are, quote, unable to make their own health care decisions. Critics say the policy shift raises significant civil liberties concerns, noting that in earlier generations, people with severe mental illness were routinely stripped of their legal rights and confined to state hospitals. Now, guardians. These guardians can control personal assets where the person lives whom he or she sees. They can require the person to accept medical treatment that they might not want. Unlike civil commitment rulings, which expire after a specific time period, guardianships are durable, though they are revisited periodically. They're permanent, but they can be revisited and terminated or dissolved. Quote, the Trump Vance administration is pursuing policies that would push hundreds, if not thousands of veterans into institutions and court ordered guardianships. That's Representative Mark Takano, top Democrat on the House Committee of Veterans Affairs. He goes on to say guardianship should always be a last resort after all less restrictive options have been exhausted to ensure veterans rights are respected. This is disgusting if you ask me.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, I agree. I have no argument at all. All right, Allison, this one's from the Post. A federal judge in Maryland on Wednesday issued a temporary restraining order halting construction work on an immigration detention center the Department of Homeland Security had planned to begin operating next month, citing concerns about the facility's potential environmental impacts. Yes, I know. Maryland Attorney General Anthony G. Brown filed an emergency motion on Tuesday seeking a 14 day pause on a renovation project, transforming an enormous empty warehouse in Washington county into an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility that would house up to 1,500 detainees facing deportation. The federal government, Brown argued, had not conducted required environmental impact studies. Of course, they didn't on the Williams sports structure and was proceeding without public input or state consultation. Maryland sued the Trump administration in February to stop the project. In his ruling on Wednesday, U.S. district Judge Brendan Herson granted Maryland's request for a restraining order, saying that the state had shown that DHS and ICE had, and I quote, likely failed to comply with their obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act. Defendants did not appear to have taken a hard look at the potential environmental consequences of their plans for the Williamsport warehouse.
Alison Gill
They probably didn't even take like a.
Dana Goldberg
They didn't take any look. I know. They took a Helen Keller look. There's no way they investigated any of this.
John Fugelsang
No.
Dana Goldberg
Now, Herson, a Biden appointee, pointed to concerns raised by the state that the existing infrastructure of the facility would be insufficient to support a population of 1,500 detainees. Failure to upgrade the system, the state argued, would, and I quote, likely result in sewage backups and overflows, creating public health hazards and environmental harm. Brown in a statement Wednesday, said the court order handed Maryland a critical victory, stopping construction that threatened our waterways, endangered species and communities before the irreversible harm that could be done. We will not let DHS and ICE rush through the proper legal process in their haste to ramp up deportations. We'll keep fighting to make sure the law is followed and Marylanders are protected.
Alison Gill
Excellent. And just hats off to organizations like Project Saltbox who raised these things to City council members, activists in the area. They're in Maryland and I know they were deeply involved in this and, you know, talking about floodplain applications and environmental comment periods and impact studies, these are the kinds of things that we can use to stop these concentration camps from being built. So well done, everybody, and well done, Maryland. All right, we'll keep an eye on that case. We've got more to get to. We've got an interview with John Fugelsang for Feeble Saying Fridays. But we have to take a quick break so stick around. We'll be right back. We'll be right back. Before I started using Rocket Money, keeping up with my finances was a monthly headache. MSW Media. Hey everybody, welcome back. It's Friday on the Daily Beans. That means it's Fugal saying Friday. I think he's in my top eight.
John Fugelsang
He's my friendster everywhere from Angelfire, Pornhub, you know.
Alison Gill
Please welcome my good friend John Fugal saying. How's it going?
John Fugelsang
Oh, thank you. It's great to talk to you. Almost as much as our president talks to Putin. It really is. Thank you so much for having me.
Alison Gill
Yeah. Get yourself someone who calls you as much as, as Trump calls Putin.
John Fugelsang
Yes. Find someone who looks at you the way Trump looks at Putin. And it's, it's, it's great to see you. I'm almost distracted from EPSTEIN and losing 92,000 jobs last month. How are you enjoying the excursion? Excursion, Dr. Gill, is it a, is it a positive excursion for you so far?
Alison Gill
Which excursion?
John Fugelsang
It's not a war, right? It's an, the excursion in Iran. Yeah.
Alison Gill
Oh, yeah. Super positive excursion. Especially given Hegseth's $93 billion September 2025 binge in order to justify his budget when we had $93 billion left over at the Pentagon that we could have used for SNAP assistance for children or ACA subsidies or any number of other things. That's what really pissed me off this week about our excursion. Our billion dollar a day excursion of choice in Iran.
John Fugelsang
I don't think you realize how good those lobsters were, Alison. And when you're the Secretary of War and you're trying to get all the generals to come into your office and have some drinks during working hours and they don't want to, you gotta, you gotta get creative and find new ways to make them like you.
Alison Gill
Well, as I said on Beans Talk, I don't like that he bought lobsters in a Steinway. But I would, I would probably be willing to spend tax money to have a lobster playing a Steinway. But you know, what's that?
John Fugelsang
150 bucks that I would get behind that as well. But, yeah, that's the sort of thing you think conservatives would be angry about. But fortunately, conservatives will never, ever hear about it because their media won't tell them. And I mean, Hegseth is still calling it a war. Trump's calling it an excursion. I mean, what is that? That's like a Costco run. Like this tells me how scared Trump is that we've gone from total victory to oops, the gas prices. Right. Last week, unconditional surrender, I get to pick Iran's next leader. And now this week, well, it's basically done. Basically done. I mean, Donald Trump may have finally stepped in it in a way, and we've said this many times, but the amount of death, the amount of destruction, the amount of environmental devastation done to the civilians of Tehran, people dying in a war, we didn't need that. He launched and he's on the links trying to break 90 all weekend, and they can't give us.
Alison Gill
He did wear his funeral hat to the golf course, though, which was nice.
John Fugelsang
Great, great funeral hat. You know, it was so bright out there. You have to think about the commander in chief. It was obliterate Iran's nuclear program, which we obliterated last year. Then it was topple the regime, Then it was destroy the missile factories, then it was destroy the navy. Then Marco was saying, well, no, actually Israel was gonna attack them and they were gonna hit back. So we hit first. I mean, these guys have changed their narrative so many times. George Lucas is angry that they keep going back and tinkering with the original story. And the markets are diving. He's created a 1970s style energy crisis in 10 days. And the only thing that's changed is there's a new Ayatollah who has the Same name. Right. 20 years to put the Taliban back in charge of Afghanistan. And now after nine days, all he's done is put another Ayatollah Khamenei in charge of Iran.
Alison Gill
Yeah, and bombed a school, which.
John Fugelsang
And lied about it.
Alison Gill
Right? Yeah. And he still hasn't even answered the question. I also did this on the beanstalk. This drives me nuts when a reporter will be like, the military has concluded in its preliminary findings that it is the US who struck that school in Tehran, and what do you have to say about that? And Trump's like, what the.
John Fugelsang
What?
Alison Gill
He's like, I haven't heard about that. I really would just for once would like a reporter to say, what do you mean you haven't heard about it? I just told you. I just told you about it.
John Fugelsang
Yeah, well, we saw a reporter essentially say, why are you the only one in your administration claiming that Iran has Tomahawk missiles? What a great way to frame a question. And it's also painful to have to praise Peter Doocy, but I'm going to do it right now because we also learned this week from US Intelligence that Russia gave Iran intel on our military positions in the Middle east, actual intelligence on US Ships and aircraft. And what happens immediately thereafter? A billion dollar radar system in Qatar, 500 million THAAD radar in Jordan. And the White House responds by lifting Russian oil sanctions. So this reporter, Peter. Well, not a reporter. Peter Doocy asked about it. And Trump snaps at him saying, what a stupid question. What a stupid question. Like, how dare you interrupt me while I'm reminding you that Vladimir's my misunderstood pen pal. And while all this is happening, we're shooting down Iranian drones with Patriot missiles that cost 3.7 million each to kill drones that cost $35,000 each. Now, I'm not that good with math, Dr. Gill, but this is kind of like defending your house from mosquitoes by smashing the mosquitoes in the wall with your Ferrari. And Zelensky, who Trump hates, is actually offering to help because Ukraine has experience shooting down these exact drones. I'm at the point now where the stupidity and destruction and death are so strong. I'm waiting for the military to take Trump out. I really am. I'm waiting for some generals to just have a junta already because I don't know how Dan Cain can stand watching this happen.
Alison Gill
Yeah, I also must be wondering what Tulsi Gabbard is thinking. Tulsi Gabbard, Putin apologist, Assad apologist, but did not want to go to war in Iran to have her daddy Putin give up our US Military locations and intelligence to Iran for them to attack us. Must really just be tearing her up inside. Especially since she might have been the one that handed all that information over to Putin in the first place. Of course, that is just pure speculation, but we haven't heard very much from Tulsi Gabbard. You might have noticed in the just. She'll just show up every once in a while when they need to seize ballots to Falsify foreign election interference to fuck with the elections. That's the only time you're going to see or hear from Tulsi Gabbard. But, but something I wanted to bring up with you that you mentioned early on was the oil and gas prices. Just something that wasn't considered at all. Like, who the fuck am I? I was a mid level civil servant and I told dick jokes at night for fun. And I knew that Iran would close the Strait of Hormuz if we attacked Iran. That is one of the many, many, many reasons over the last four decades, no other president has been willing to get dog walked by the nose by Bibi Netan. Now Mohammed bin Salman into bombing Iran and killing the Ayatollah. First, because it would just be replaced by a more hardline younger guy and, you know, continue to fuck the Iranian people. And second, they will close the Strait of Hormuz and the price of oil would go through the roof. It's political suicide. And now Trump is panicking and he is said, well, we're going to escort the ships. And then Energy Secretary Wright said, we had somebody escort the ships. And then. And oil prices dropped. And I'm sure Trump and all of his friends bought the dip. And then he deleted that tweet and oil prices shot back up again. Now they're back over $100 a barrel. That Dow's down below 47. That's in the 46 thousands now. So Pam Bondi, when she comes to testify to Congress, maybe she'll be able to answer some questions finally, now that the dow is below 50,000 and so I am just, I'm just sitting like they really should just shout the Dow at her. Like, like just have Moskowitz have his only job be when she's trying to answer a question, just shout the Dow right in her face. When she's testifying about the Epstein files, which still haven't been released. Their numbers are in the shitter. Trump is panicking. Now the Navy is saying. The Navy noped out. They're like, we're not escorting through the Strait of Hormuz. Are you insane? And now they're laying mines.
John Fugelsang
Yeah.
Alison Gill
In the Strait of Hormuz, which even if we somehow win the excursion, it's now a mine. It's a minefield. To get through the Strait of Hormuz. Oil takers are gonna be stopped. The price of oil is not going to change. No matter how much OPEC releases oil reserves, we're absolutely fucked. And it's because they didn't think Ahead of just bombing the shit out of Iran.
John Fugelsang
I think you covered it. Except for the part where Trump figures out how to blame transgender children who wanna play sports for all of this. I think you covered everything.
Alison Gill
Oh, transgender for everybody.
John Fugelsang
Transgender for everybody. They're doing it in the schools. Can't get dropped off in the morning, they come home a different gender that day. The parents are never having it. I mean, it's going to be harder and harder for people to tolerate this trifling nonsense when they realize that high gas prices raise the price of everything. Not just gas. We're going to be getting a lot of civics lessons and a lot of economic lessons in the next six months. And one of them is that the price of everything is about to go up right before a crucial midterm where the entire Republican caucus is trying as hard as they can to find the most creative ways to cheat in every way possible. And all they're gonna do is drive Democratic turnout to be substantially higher. It's an amazing time to be alive and I don't know anybody and any level of debt who would trade places with billionaire Donald Trump over the next year. I mean, Ukraine is helping defend our interest. Russia's helping Iran target Americans. The President's getting mad at reporters for asking about it. He's not mad about the dead kids or Russia killing Americans. He's angry about the questions about it. And the Epstein files are not going away. And the inflation, which was already.
Alison Gill
Is that Stephen Miller feed from his neck, if you've seen.
John Fugelsang
Oh, yes, exactly right. But Stephen Miller needs to feed. It helps him sleep upside down. And this is going to be quite a summer for Maga. Again, I have a. I'm writing a book right now about all this. Know who the President's going to be in a year? I don't know who the President's going to be a year from now.
Alison Gill
It's got to be so hard to write a book right now with 18 Watergate level scandals happening on a daily basis. And I mean, is your book called seventeen, what the Fuck's Ago? Because, I mean, I don't even know how you could possibly release a book about this administration at this time.
John Fugelsang
Well, no, but my book is sort of the companion piece, the Separation of Church and Hate, and it's all about the history of fake Christians. Good.
Alison Gill
Well, let's talk about this, because this week the administration managed, as you texted me earlier, managed to go after Muslims, Christians and Jews in the same week, even though Nazi Jeremy Carl did have to withdraw his nomination. To the State Department because he couldn't even get Republicans to vote for him. That's he was a little too Nazi.
John Fugelsang
And that's all because. But it's all. But it's not because he's too Nazi. It's because of effective questioning on camera by Democratic congressmen. That's what killed them. Not the Nazi stuff. They don't care about the Nazi stuff. And you look at Andy Ogles, okay? The proud son of Tennessee. He tweets, muslims don't belong in American society. Pluralism is a lie. Imagine if he had tweeted, jews don't belong in American society. Catholics don't belong in American society. And these Republicans, it's a great chance for them in a tough election year to stand up and say, that's unacceptable. Mike Johnson's not man enough to do that. Well, it's not the language I would use. Mike Johnson is Trump's human diaper. And he has never met a bigot that bothered him at all. But it's so historically humiliating because in 1797, John Adams signed the Treaty of Tripoli, including Article 11, ratified by George Washington, which says, and I quote, the government of the United States is in no way founded on the Christian religion. That means Muslims belong here. Jews belong here. Atheists belong here, Christians belong here. The people who don't belong here are politicians who think our Constitution is optional. Andy Ogles failed. Like every class he took in college, he had a 2.4 GPA. The Constitution. This is why I love irony. The Constitution protects his right to say that Muslims don't belong here. And the Constitution also proves he's totally fucking wrong that Muslims don't belong here. But the Christian hypocrisy is crazy because Jesus says, love your neighbor. These guys think love your neighbor unless they pray differently. And pluralism is the reason Andy Ogles is allowed to say something this stupid without being arrested. He says, diversity is our weakness. Republicans are our weakness. And this might be the year we finally get to understand that. What blew My mind, Dr. Gill, is that as soon as I'm, like, digesting this Andy Ogles story, I read about the new survey from the Manhattan Institute that says that 54% of Republican men under 50 don't believe the Holocaust happened or was greatly exaggerated. 54. This is where do your own research has gotten us with the YouTube Nazi comment section. 54% Holocaust denial. When we were kids, that was, like a thing done by creepy guys whispering with pamphlets outside of vans that had no windows. And now it's like the comment section is come to life and run for office. And Elon Musk gets so much credit for this because ever since apartheid McBotox face turned Twitter into this Nazi chat room, this is normal. Neo Nazis are back. Holocaust deniers are back. Nick Fuentes is normalized every day. The Holocaust is the most documented genocide in human history. It's like saying World War II didn't happen. But opening the gates of social media to neo Nazis has consequence. And when you build a megaphone for Nazis, you don't get more free speech. You get louder, idiots.
Alison Gill
Right? But if they can erase the history of the Holocaust, they can erase the history of what ICE is doing right now.
John Fugelsang
Exactly.
Alison Gill
And they can erase the history of what happened on January 6th. And they. I mean, that's what. That's what authoritarians do. That's what Nazis do. They rewrite history. That's what evil men do, is they rewrite history to make themselves the winners of, you know, whatever it is, including excursions in Iran. So, my friend, it's been always a pleasure to talk to you. Do you have any shows coming up? You going on the road?
Dana Goldberg
You're just busy?
Alison Gill
You're in your writing cave right now?
John Fugelsang
I do, but I want to slip in one more. I want to slip in one more really quick granting point, because we just learned they're trying to take temporary protected status from the 350,000 Haitian immigrants that Trump lied about on the campaign trail. And we have to remember these Haitians that we welcomed here because it's not safe in Haiti. Trump's own State Department issues level four, do not travel. It's the highest warning level. It's not safe to go there. You will get shot or kidnapped. And we're trying to deport families there with small children into a land we know is not safe. And what we have to remember is Haiti is overwhelmingly Christian. So that's why this week they are oppressing Christians, Jews, and Muslims at the same time. It's just amazing. And yes, I'll be this weekend in Tucson, Arizona, at the Tucson Book Festival and then lots of other shows that I'll be announcing coming up later in the year. But right now, I'm squirreling away writing my book about fake fucking Christians and woo, Pete Hegseth is giving me extra chapters.
Alison Gill
Yeah, you could write a whole book just on Pete Hegseth's chest in a book about fake Christians. So thank you so very much, my friend. I love when you turn your radio voice on. You're like, yes, I'll be in Tucson, Arizona.
John Fugelsang
I'll be in Tucson, Arizona with a low pressure front with traffic and weather on the Thames.
Alison Gill
You could probably do baseball pretty good too. Wow. Coming to the plate now, long time broadcaster, New York Times bestselling author John Fugal saying thank you for joining us.

Right on. Thanks so much Allison. This is from Phoebe Pronouns she and her. Let's go. Special elections. Thanks for covering. I've known Bobby Bowdman, recent winner of New Hampshire House special election for almost 20 years. Her name is pronounced Budman. Thank you very much Bobby Budman. Thank you. Your error was 100% reasonable, but just figured I'd let you know. Thanks for mentioning. Thank you.
Alison Gill
Appreciate it. I was asking yesterday. I was like bodeman Bowdman, what is it? I had everything but Butman. So now I know.
Dana Goldberg
Thanks for mentioning Bobby's win. It was an incredible community effort against a free stater who moved to town just six months ago. You're both amazing and I appreciate hearing from you every day. Pix My blooming Amaryllis and two of my sisters and I before seeing the musical Suffs in January.
Alison Gill
Oh great.
Dana Goldberg
Suffs is so good. If Suffs goes through your city, go see it. It's about the 19th Amendment and the women's right to vote. It's really. It's the suffragist movement. It's so fucking good.
Alison Gill
Look at these three beautiful sisters.
Dana Goldberg
Awesome.
Alison Gill
And they're all wearing their sashes. Votes for women. It just reminds me of Mary Poppins.
Dana Goldberg
Love it.
Alison Gill
All right, next up from anonymous Pronoun she and her Greetings from occupied St. Paul, Minnesota. I recently purchased a townhouse that was in need of a lot of tlc. Fortunately, my state likes to keep us warm and safe, so we're blessed with several nonprofit organizations that help with weatherization and related energy conservation options for homeowners and renters. God, I love Minnesota so much. Last week I had a visit from the center for Energy and the Environment and they took several pictures of areas where heat and cold air issues were happening. In my small home, the pictures that really had the biggest impact were a surprise for me. At the end of a 14 page report, they took pictures of the best heat source in my home. My dog. How fun is that? My dog Pelosi was lost in the woods of northern Wisconsin and rescued by a local woman who rehomes lost dogs to larger communities. Lucky for me, we connected via Craigslist as the pandemic was heading our way. Her warmth got me through the pandemic and now this cluster blank. Thank heavens for our furry, feathered, scale covered loved ones. Okay, look at the heat. The infrared photos.
Dana Goldberg
So funny of the pupper.
Alison Gill
What a sweet baby. That's so cool that you have heat map photos of your dog on a page from oh that's great. Thank you so much for that.
Dana Goldberg
All right, this is from Laura Pronouns she and her hi. I wanted to share some Good news. After 14 years working in my town's legal office, I was recently appointed the first woman city attorney in our community. Apparently, persistence really does pay off, and so does knowing where all the files are buried. Legally, of course. It's an exciting milestone for me and a proud moment for our town. Thanks for spreading the good news. I love this image of this lawyer that came on and was on a cat and he couldn't figure out how to get the filter off off. And he was like, I just need everyone to know I'm not a cat. Your Honor. Oh my God.
Alison Gill
Congratulations, Laura. That's amazing. All right, next up, Hortense Woolly Whacker. Pronoun. She and her. Hi, ladies. I took the oath. I was sworn in to work as a temp for the California primary in June. Awesome. I live in a very red area in Riverside. I know it. It's going to be interesting to see elections from behind the scenes. Thank you both for creating such an amazing community. Stay strong. I've attached a photo of. Of Juno. My ride or die. She is the sweetest girl. Guess her breeds. Love you. Looks like a cattle dog and a lab and a. Yeah, pity and a chow.
Dana Goldberg
Little, little bit of a wolf.
Alison Gill
Look, we got border collie and German shepherd.
Dana Goldberg
I was close. There you go.
Alison Gill
But not. Not quite. Oh, maybe if I'd seen that second photo. Yeah, I just scrolled down and saw. Yeah, obviously. Obviously. It's a cattle dog and a German shepherd. Oh, man. Anyway, thanks for that.
Dana Goldberg
All right. This is from MK Pronoun. She and her. Hello, Allison and Dana. Thanks for keeping us all relatively sane in this insane world. I'm an avid listener and I have been since the kitchen table days. I was glad to hear your coverage of the strike on the Iranian school. Excuse me, Iranian school. I hope you will allow me to add a little nuance. For 20 years I've conducted research and advocacy on civilian protection and armed conflict, including with the US and also with allies. And part this strike sadly follows the same pattern of most previous erroneous strikes the US has taken which have caused civilian harm due to target misidentification. This can happen for several reasons. This one seems like way outdated intel, but it is also often avoidable if simple steps are followed, including establishing a critical understanding of the civilian environment in which you are operating. The U.S. recognized the need to institutionalize two decades of lessons learned on avoiding civil harm and 2022 create the Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan, or CHMRAP. Pronounced CHMRAP, but guess what? It was one of the first things hegseth cut. Wow. That means almost all.
Alison Gill
This is what I talked to Sasha Abramski about on the BDC yesterday.
Dana Goldberg
That means almost all the institutional capacity being built to prevent incidents like this, including 165 full time employees across the DOD was cut. And here we are. The strike is a tragic consequence of our own actions and an unforced error that allegedly took more than 150 young lives and weakened our standing in the world. We've got a link to the US built a blueprint to Avoid civilian war casualties. Trump officials scrapped it, so there's your little source there. Thank you for focusing on topics like this. They are so important to bolstering America's understanding of the true cost of war abroad. Podpet tacks are two. Looks like we got different kinds of bulldogs. And one blank. Lulu's brown, clover's blue. Keep on keeping on. The resistance is real. Let's see. We got a regular bulldog, and it looks like a French bulldog.
Alison Gill
Yeah, it's a Frenchie and a bully.
Dana Goldberg
Look at these babies.
Alison Gill
No, the underbites are what do it for me. Yeah, two bully babies, one French and one English. Oh, my goodness. I have that bed, by the way, away from my cat. Nice.
Dana Goldberg
By the way, I didn't mean to say a regular bulldog, because I don't
Alison Gill
think there's a regular bulldog.
Dana Goldberg
I think it's an English bulldog and a French bulldog. I heard it come out and I was like, what the hell's a regular bulldog?
Alison Gill
You know what I mean? Regular bulldogs.
Dana Goldberg
Regular bulldogs.
Alison Gill
All right, next up, from Marie Pronoun. She and her. Hi, I am a quitter and an artist. Excuse me, I'm a quilter and an artist.
Dana Goldberg
Listen, Marie, if you do end up giving up one day, that's okay, too. It really is. If you just said, I'm not going to quit anymore.
Alison Gill
I know. I almost gave my whole little speech that I give about failing fast. Artists are often some of the first people to make art about injustices. Yes, that is so true. At this year's Quiltcon 2026, the protest quilts were remarkable. Check out a few here. We've got an Instagram link in the show notes. And check out Capital Stitch Co. Also making small embroidery protests for anyone to try. We'll have a link to that in the show notes. Amazing. Look at this work. Inspiration for all of us to keep protesting in all different ways. Thanks. And then there's a picture of two kitties, gray and white tuxedo with a heart for a nose and a little void baby, so. Oh, thank you all so much for your good news. That's a good way to end the week. Really, really appreciate it. If you have any, please send it to us dailybeanspod.com click on contact. Do you have any thoughts before we get out of here for the weekend, my friend?
Dana Goldberg

Host(s): Alison Gill (AG), Dana Goldberg (DG)
Guest: John Fugelsang
This episode of The Daily Beans delivers a spirited, snark-filled breakdown of the week’s major political stories, with a sharp focus on rising authoritarianism, government waste, and the rollbacks of civil rights in the Trump administration’s second term. The show’s signature tone blends righteous outrage with witty banter and the lived experience of the progressive activism community. The episode’s centerpiece is an expansive interview with political comedian and author John Fugelsang, who unleashes trenchant commentary on the new war in Iran, Pentagon excess, Republican hypocrisy, rising antisemitism, and the weaponization of Christian nationalism.
Wide-ranging, sharp-witted conversation:
This episode is a whirlwind tour of today’s progressive, feminist resistance to authoritarianism and political hypocrisy—from unchecked military spending to the rolling back of civil rights, and from anti-LGBTQ+ community survival to Holocaust denial in the GOP base. The John Fugelsang interview offers biting comedic analysis and historical context on Christian nationalism and the ongoing war in Iran, making the episode particularly essential for those worried about the direction of US democracy and civil society.
Listeners leave feeling both alarmed and galvanized, reminded both of the gravity of current threats and the strength, wit, and courage of activist communities across America. The sprawling but focused format, with timestamps and playful banter, makes the news digestible while rarely sacrificing critical edge—or hope.
