MSW Media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Tuesday, June 17, 2025. Today, Vance Belter is hit with six federal felonies. And the Hennepin County DA says they will seek first degree murder charges. New rules allow the Department of Veterans affairs doctors to refuse to treat Democrats and unmarried veterans. Gavin Newsom's bid for an injunction barring Trump from federalizing the National Guard is fully briefed ahead of today's hearing. A federal judge has declared Trump's National Institutes of Health cuts to be illegal. The sudden deployment of US Air tankers to the Middle east raises questions. Donald Trump calls for Russia to rejoin the G. And Trump accidentally drops a signed UK US Trade deal and then mistakenly calls it a deal with the E.U. i'm Allison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Allison Gill
Just so globally embarrassing.
Dana Goldberg
I'm just gonna come out swinging today. Our president sounds like a hot fucking mess. Actually, I take away the word hot.
Allison Gill
Yeah. Sans the hot fucking mess. Sounds hot now. Yeah, we're gonna talk about that. We're gonna talk about a little bit about the G7. But first, before we go any further, I am still so loving the gay of the day. Talk about who the gay of the day is today.
Dana Goldberg
Thank you. And by the way, I know I say this every episode now, seriously, every time we have an episode, there's a bunch of new followers. They have to be beans followers. It's gotta be you all. You're kicking ass on the socials for me and I appreciate it. The gay of the day is on my social media. It's G comedy. And today was Sally Ride. So we got to do Sally Ride today. And then tomorrow, if I'm not mistaken, is a trans actor named Brian Michael Smith. And he was also the first trans guy to ever be on the list of the sexiest man alive for People magazine. And a couple of other incredible things. So you're going to love the story Brian Michael Smith. And then we have a bunch of other people coming up. And we've got Billie Jean King, Cecilia Gentile. A holiday like we've got. There's. There's people on there, so I'm glad you're enjoying them, Arthur. Arthur Cashiers exploded. Arthur Cashier's video got over 70,000 views. So we had some amazing people share it, including under the Desk News. Our dear friend V shared that for me. And so people are really loving that, especially right now, because they didn't know about the Civil War hero, you know?
Allison Gill
Right. I'm learning so much, too. And by the way, I loved you gonna. You're gonna have a Billie Jean King one. But I loved the Billie Jean King cameo in the Sally Ride Gay of the Day.
Dana Goldberg
Really did.
Allison Gill
She didn't tell anybody she was gay, but there were signs.
Dana Goldberg
There were signs. This is her playing tennis with Billie Jean King.
Allison Gill
That was good. So wonderful. And that's so cool. Under the dust news is great. I love them so much.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. We're coming up on with a series, I think close to half a million views across the series right now on all social media platforms. So people are really enjoying the gay of the Day and share them. I know that some of you are following me and you follow me, go on my page, find one that you love and just share it to your story. Because the more people that have eyes on this, the more that our story stories are being carried on through history and not being erased like this administration wants them to be.
Allison Gill
That's part of the resistance, my friend.
Dana Goldberg
Indeed.
Allison Gill
So. All right. Today in court, there will be a hearing on Gavin Newsom and Rob Bonto's lawsuit. That motion for a preliminary injunction against Trump sending the military and National Guard D's nuts to California.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
We're going to update you tomorrow on that hearing. It hasn't happened yet, but it is fully briefed. And so I, I wish they would have been able to get this done sooner, but there was an administrative stay placed on this. So we'll. We'll update you tomorrow. Also, the jury is deliberating in the defamation case against the pillow man, Mike Lindell. The jury's out. This is the lawsuit brought by Dominion Voting Systems and Coomer. Remember?
Dana Goldberg
Lovely. Sure. Too.
Allison Gill
And Harry and I are going to cover that in a lot of detail, including stuff, some of the stuff that came out at trial on tomorrow's cleanup on aisle 45 podcast. That's free wherever you get your pods. And this is concerning multiple U.S. air Force KC 135 and KC 46 aerial refueling aircraft departed their bases in the U.S. and headed to Europe. This is a sudden and unusual movement. And it was quickly noticed on flight tracking websites when about 30 tankers were first spotted headed toward the Atlantic Ocean and later arriving in Europe. Blood in Ramstein Air Force Base. And Trump said on Truth Social just now on Monday afternoon that Iran should have signed the nuclear deal he told them to sign. And now, quote, everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran. Wow. Now, that comes after Bibi Netanyahu told everybody to immediately evacuate Tehran. So this sounds like some sort of a joint attack, US Israel attack on Iran. So I don't know. I don't know. We also. They also moved B2 bombers. We talked about that, like, a few weeks ago. Into strategic positions.
Dana Goldberg
This is such a bad situation.
Allison Gill
Yeah. Yeah. It doesn't sound good. The peace president, the one who didn't start any wars ever. Ever. And now there are three, so.
Dana Goldberg
And just to be clear, I don't think he's ended any. Any wars yet either.
Allison Gill
Oh, 24 hours. He'll get the whole Ukraine thing solved. He'll get peace in the Middle East.
Dana Goldberg
That turned out to be more complicated than we thought.
Allison Gill
Yeah, well, that's what happens when you don't invite Palestine to the table for peace negotiations. Yeah, we're gonna. We're gonna negotiate peace, but only one side will be there. Damn it. Seriously, I just can't. It's embarrassing and it's dangerous, so. Well, we're gonna keep our eye on it for you. Promise. All right, we have a lot of news to get to. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right. From the Minnesota reformer. The Hennepin county prosecutor will pursue first degree murder charges against Vance Belter. That's the suspect arrested in the assassination of Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband. That's the breaking news I brought into yesterday's beans. Late last night, after a manhunt, they were able to capture him. Belter also was charged with six federal offenses, including stalking, murder, and firearms charges. In addition to the murder of Melissa and Mark Hortman, Belter is accused of shooting state senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette. Both are expected to recover. Thankfully. Belter visited the homes of two other state legislators who were unharmed, including Senator Ann Rest in New Hope. The other target has not been disclosed, but officials say she's a Maple Grove representative. The Hennepin county attorney's office initially charged Belter with two counts of second degree murder and two counts of attempted murder. Hennepin county attorney Mary Moriarty said the second degree murder charges were filed on Saturday in order to obtain a nationwide arrest warrant. Those were the highest charges that can be filed through a complaint. Okay, so in. In Minnesota, Dana, you can't file first degree murder charges on a complaint just to get an arrest. You actually can only get first degree murder charges from a grand jury.
Dana Goldberg
Got it.
Allison Gill
And Moriarty is going to be seeking those first degree murder charges from a grand jury. That's what the D. A. Said. So the U.S. attorneys. Now we're talking federal. We're talking DOJ. They brought federal charges against Belter on Sunday night. Those charges Include two counts of stalking using interstate facilities, two counts of murder, two firearms offenses. That comprises the six counts and that's for the shooting of the Hortmans and the Hoffmans. The federal murder charges carry the potential for the death penalty. During an appearance in federal court, Belter said he can't afford a defense attorney. So they appointed one and they set a preliminary hearing and a detention hearing for the same day, June 27th. He'll be in custody pending that hearing.
Dana Goldberg
Thanks so much, Alison. And this is more on the other people that this guy visited, quote, unquote. This is from the Guardian. The Acting U.S. attorney for the District of Minnesota. This is Joe Thompson. Told reporters that as well as the early hours attacks on Hortman and Hoffman residences, Belter was spotted at the homes of two other unnamed lawmakers, one a state representative, the other state senator in a planned campaign of stalking and violence at one of the properties. Nobody was home. This is what he said at the other he was confronted by a police officer who was called to make a wellness check and he fled the scene. Thompson gave a timeline of Belter's alleged spree which began at the Hoffman's home, arriving in a black suv. As we know, he was disguised to look like a police officer and that vehicle was as well, wearing a hyper realistic latex mask. Belter knocked on their door claiming to be a police officer and shot them both repeatedly after they opened the door and realized he was not who he claimed to be. Both remained in the hospital in serious condition, but they're expected to survive now. Yeah. Next, Thompson said Belcher drove the home of Minnesota state representative in Maple Grove where a doorbell camera captured him at 2:24am she was on vacation, thank goodness, and he left. From there he traveled to the home of a state senator arriving about 2:36am an officer from the New Hope Police Department arrived to find Belter's vehicle parked a short distance away with lights on. Thompson said she assumed he was a fellow officer already in response to the Hoffman shooting. But when she wound down her window to speak to him, Beler did not respond and just sat there and stared straight ahead. She retreated to the senator's home to await the arrival of colleagues who arrived to find him gone. Finally, Thompson said he drove to the Hortman's home in Brooklyn Park. Officers arrived at the 3:30am timeline to find him standing on the porch and when they got out of their vehicle, he began firing at them, forced his way into the house and shot and killed Hortman and her husband. Then fled on foot.
Allison Gill
How did, how did they miss him?
Dana Goldberg
I don't know how they, they, they. I don't know how those two murders happened after they were already shooting at him is what it sounds like.
Allison Gill
And they, and the officer saw him and pulled up to him and rolled the window and said she thought he was one of them, but he didn't respond. And weren't they looking for someone posing as a police officer? Yeah, I'm just, I don't understand. I hope we get more information on that. And by the way, an FBI affidavit states that after the shootings, Belcher used cash to purchase a vehicle from a stranger. This is the second car that they found. And then drove to Green Isle about an hour west of Minneapolis where a police officer reported seeing him run into the woods. The Brooklyn Park Police Chief, Mark Brulee, said about 20 different tactical teams searched inside a perimeter for him. It was a big perimeter and he was located after an hours long operation that included a helicopter with infrared. When Belter was found, he crawled out of the woods after a short period of negotiation and was taken into custody in that field. In the vehicle there, a police found a handwritten confession while a search of his wife's car yielded two handguns, passports and $10,000 in cash. It states that Belter texted his wife, quote, words aren't going to explain how sorry I am for this situation. There's going to be some people coming to the house armed and trigger happy and I don't want you guys around. The superintendent of Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, Drew Evans, told a Sunday news conference that authorities interviewed Belter's wife and other family members in connection with Saturday shootings and that they were being cooperative and they're not in custody.
Dana Goldberg
Thank you, Allison. This is also in connection with these other stories, but this is from the Salt Lake Tribune. After spending the weekend on lockdown to protect against the gunman who shot two Democratic Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses, one couple fatally. US Senator Amy Klobuchar says she has words for Utah Senator Mike Lee and his reaction to the killings. And I quote, I have condemned what Mike Lee did here at home and I will speak to him about this when I return. That's what Minnesota Democrats said during a Monday morning interview with MSNBC and went on to say, and what I'm going to tell him is this isn't funny. What happened here? From his personal account, this jackass on Twitter, Lee, he spread unfounded claims about the alleged gunman across multiple posts, making light of the killings and attempting to blame the violence on the political left. One post, however, sparked immediate criticism from both sides of the aisle.
Allison Gill
Yeah, that's the one where he was, like, waltz or something with Nightmare on Walls Street.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, he just. He's just a piece of.
Allison Gill
He is. I hope they vote him out. I hope Utah votes him out. I really do. All right, we're going to. By the way, Klobuchar was one of the 70 people on his target list. Yeah, that's been confirmed. All right, we're gonna. We're gonna shift gears here. This reporting comes from Kyle Cheney. This is a. A better news story for you. A federal judge appointed by Reagan. Ronald Reagan on Monday. Who else? What other Reagan? Like, you know.
Dana Goldberg
You know Tippy Reagan? You remember Tippy?
Allison Gill
Yeah, his kid. No. Ronald Reagan on Monday accused the Trump administration of, quote, appalling and palpably clear discrimination against racial minorities and LGBTQ plus Americans. This is like a 5,000-year-old judge. Okay. He said. A record where racial discrimination was so palpable. I've sat on this bench now for 40 years. I've never seen governmental racial discrimination like this. That's U.S. district Judge William Young, a Massachusetts based jurist who took the bench in 1985.
Dana Goldberg
Goodness.
Allison Gill
When the first Back to the Future came out. Okay. Young's sweeping rebuke during a court hearing was a reference to two executive orders signed by Trump that led the National Institutes of Health to rescind funding for research related to racial minorities and LGBT LBTQ plus people. Though Young said he was uncertain whether he had the power to block the executive orders themselves, he declared the NIH cuts Monday to be illegal and void, and he ordered the NIH to immediately restore the research funds. An appeal is likely, he said, quote, I'm hesitant to draw this conclusion, but I have an unflinching obligation to draw it. That this represents racial discrimination and discrimination against America's LGBTQ community. That is what this is. I would be blind not to call it out. My duty is to call it out.
Dana Goldberg
Well said, huh?
Allison Gill
Like from. I can't. Like, that's so good. Quote, you are bearing down on people of color because of their color, he said. The Constitution will not permit that. Have we fallen so low? Have we no shame? Now, the Justice Department has contended that its efforts to cut research grants and many other programs and agencies simply a reflection of the new Trump administration's policy priorities reflected in executive orders. Those are unreviewable by the courts. They say the president should have broad latitude to Set priorities and pause funding for programs that no longer align. But the judge said. Judge Young said the administration made virtually no effort to push back on the claims that the cuts were discriminatory. Quote, we're talking about health here, the health of Americans, our LGBTQ community. He said. That is appalling. I'm just. I'm moved by this really old Reagan appointed judge, as I am.
Dana Goldberg
As I am. You heard me. As I am. As am I. All right, this is from the Guardian. Doctors of the Department of Veterans affairs, the va. That's hospitals nationwide, they could refuse to treat unmarried veterans and Democrats under new hospital guidelines imposed following an executive order by Trump. The new rules obtained by the Guardian also apply to psychologists, dentists, and a host of other occupations. They've already gone into effect in at least some VA medical centers. This is nuts. Medical staff are still required to treat veterans regardless of race, color, religion, and sex. And all veterans remain entitled to treatment. But individual workers are now free to decline to care for patients based on personal characteristics not explicitly prohibited by federal law. Language required healthcare professionals to care for veterans regardless of their politics and marital status has been explicitly eliminated. So if you're single, you voted for Kamala. They don't have to treat you.
Allison Gill
Yeah, so that's me. Are they going to add if you have cats? Yeah, probably.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. And a tattoo sleeve on your left arm? You betcha.
Allison Gill
And if you're doctors, Allison Gill, you may not.
Dana Goldberg
That's exactly what's going to happen. Doctors and other medical staff, they can also be barred from working at VR hospitals based on their marital status, political party affiliation, or union activity.
Allison Gill
Oh, my God. That's so illegal.
Dana Goldberg
Yep, this is what the documents that the Guardian reviewed showed. The changes also affect chiropractors, certified nurse practitioners, optometrists, podiatrists, licensed clinical social workers, and speech therapists. Why the fuck. Allison? Like, I can't. I can't think of the reasons behind this make it make sense.
Allison Gill
Good luck finding a Republican optometrist.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, my God.
Allison Gill
That's all I'm saying. Okay, who's the one that. That called himself an optomet? Oh, that's an ophthalmologist.
Dana Goldberg
That was true. Because no Republicans want to see clearly. Thanks. I'll be her. I'll wait. Try the bill.
Allison Gill
Nice.
Dana Goldberg
Don't try the veal. It's bad for the babies.
Allison Gill
That. Yes, don't try the veal.
Dana Goldberg
Skip the veal, everyone.
Allison Gill
Progressive this progressive show. That's right. I try the tofu. We'll be here all week. And news from the G7. Okay. I'm so embarrassing. The Guardian reports Donald Trump has displayed his disdain for the collective Western values supposed. Championed by the G7. Why did he even go? Just stay the home, bro. If you hate NATO so goddamn like, just stay home. Anyway, he went. And it's In Canada, the G7 group of industrialized countries. By again demanding that Russia be readmitted to the group. He also said the war in Ukraine wouldn't have happened if Moscow had been kept in the club.
Dana Goldberg
He's.
Allison Gill
He is blaming Obama and everybody, by the way, the whole world kicking Russia out of the G8. That's why there's a war, even though it's ridiculous. Yeah, I didn't. I don't know. I'm just. And I heard somebody on. I was listening to an MSNBC clip. I think it was Anna Cabrera who said she was talking about the war, and she. And she positioned it as the war that has broken out in Ukraine.
Dana Goldberg
What did you just break out?
Allison Gill
It didn't break out. And you. Anyway, I'm sorry. I get worked up. Damn it.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. My menopausal face is breaking out. I warn. Ukraine didn't just break out.
Allison Gill
It just broke out. It just broke out. Oh, my God. Trump made his remarks in front of media alongside Canada's Prime Minister, Mark Carney, who is hosting the G7, and he did this at the start of the summit's first round of talks. Russia was thrown out of the G8, as I said, after it invaded Crimea in 2014. Rightfully so. And Trump's defense of Vladimir Putin came a day before the US President is scheduled to meet his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky. I wouldn't put them on the same level.
Dana Goldberg
No.
Allison Gill
On the fringes of the summit. And it will be the first meeting between the two men since Pope Francis's funeral in April.
Dana Goldberg
All right, I can't. And I hate that I have to tell more stories about him, but this one's sort of funny. This one's from the Mirror.
Allison Gill
It's embarrassing.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, Embarrassing, I should say. Donald Trump made two embarrassing blunders during today's meeting with Keir Starmer, in which the US President accidentally dropped a key document and referred to it as an EU deal while talking about the deal in the uk.
Allison Gill
The UK is not even part of the. Okay.
Dana Goldberg
Yep, yep, yep. Can thank Bannon for that. The US President and UK Prime Minister met during the G7 conference in Alberta, Canada, today, where leaders are discussing a series of ongoing crises, including the war in Ukraine and ongoing exchange between Iran and Israel, the UK and US were set to sign a quote, really important agreement in the. I'm sorry, I don't mean to laugh, but that. They workshop that. And that's what they came up with. This is a very important agreement, like.
Allison Gill
Any other thing would be, like a reciprocal trade agreement or a blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. No, this is just the really important agreement. That's really important agreement. Oh, my God.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, they were. They were set to sign that really important agreement in the backdrop of the conference this afternoon. And this is months after a trade deal was floated during Sir Keir's official White House appearance earlier this year. Despite its importance, Mr. Trump was seen fumbling the documents ahead of a key press address. Fumbling as in drop them on the ground, by the way. As Mr. Trump emerged from the meeting center in Alberta this afternoon, he was seen sporting a slick black folder in his right hand. Apparently it was very slick, like, slippery. And he opened it and held up to the gathered members of the press as he did it. All the documents fell on the floor. Yep. With Sir Kear crouching down to pick them up and pass them Back to the U.S. commander in Chief. Then Trump announced in his agreement with the eu, not the uk.
Allison Gill
It's a really important agreement with the eu.
Dana Goldberg
Yep. I just. I know.
Allison Gill
It's like. It's like fifth grade. No, it's like kindergarten. It's like pre K. It's on the front of the slick leather binder. Did it say really important agreement like?
Dana Goldberg
It probably did. Really important agreement binder full of women.
Allison Gill
It's probably not. It's probably the same as it was before, anyway. All right.
Dana Goldberg
Always was.
Allison Gill
Same as it ever was. Bonk. All right, here we go. I guess I did the movement, by the way, from.
Dana Goldberg
Well done.
Allison Gill
Thank you. See that? I'm not. I forget sometimes. I'm. I'm. I'm only audio. All right, everybody, it's time for some Good trouble. What are you guys doing? All right, this is from Rachel Pronoun. She and her this is a good trouble submission. The 47 administration wants to post signs at national park sites asking the public to report anything that misrepresents US History. I can't wait for these signs. We all know what to do. So the Department of the Interior is requiring the National Park Services to post signage at all sites across the country by June 13th. So they should be up asking visitors to offer feedback on any information they feel portrays American history and landscapes in a negative light. For example, if there's a signpost about a black hero in history. That is probably something they want to know about so they can take it down. That's what they're looking for. They're looking for snitches. An example image of a sign leaked to NPR for Wilson's Creek National Battlefield in Missouri, the site of the second major battle of the Civil War. Ahead of its potential installation asks visitors to identify any signs or other information that are negative about either past or living Americans that fail to emphasize the beauty, grandeur and abundance of the landscapes and other natural features. The sign also asks for feedback concerning areas and services that need repair or improvement. But this is really like, you know, if they put up, if they put confederates in, in a bad light, they, they want to know about it. So, yeah, you can go to go.nps.goveo14253 we'll have a link in the show notes. That's where you're supposed to snitch on national parks being racist against confederates. So your good trouble today is to head there and tell them to return the language about transgender people to the Stonewall Memorial. Well, let's do that.
Dana Goldberg
Yep, that's exactly what I was going to say. Be like, I'm sorry, there's a T missing from the sign and the story. So if you all can remedy that, that would be great.
Allison Gill
Yeah, let's do that. Let's do that for Pride Month. So again, we'll have a link in the Show Notes so you can give your feedback and I offer you some feedback. All right, everybody, stick around. We'll be right back with the good news after these messages.
Dana Goldberg
We'll be right back.
Allison Gill

Look at this little man. Hello, Beans Queens. I went to my first rally in Long beach on Saturday and it made me cry. How many people were there from all walks of life voicing their opinions? I wore my GI robot a beautiful day to kill Nazis shirt. Hell yeah. Thank you for providing a great news outlet and information on what to do or how to prepare to protest. It felt so great to be around a community. It definitely won't be my last. I'm sharing a picture of autistic nonverbal 5 year old. I pity RFK that he's never had the love and affection of a neurodivergent child. He's a light of my life. My 10 year old goes to school singing the Daily Beans theme song every day.
Dana Goldberg
Oh my God. You are doing the Lord's work, Doug.
Allison Gill
Look at that. Look at that.
Dana Goldberg
Look how sweet this boy is. My goodness. That smile.
Allison Gill
I know.
Dana Goldberg
Love it.
Allison Gill
Wonderful. Thank you, Doug.
Dana Goldberg
This is from John Pronouns he and him. Hey, Beans Queens. I thought you'd get a kick out of my solution for Wordle on May 25. While I did use the orange headed fucker's name as my second guess, it did fit. I had to chuckle when I solved it on my fourth try for my pod pet tax. I'm sending a picture of an axolotl. No, that's not how you say it. Someone corrected me.
Allison Gill
No, you got it.
Dana Goldberg
Okay. Axolotl. I took on the at the Ithaca Science center recently. Can you guess the model? Love your show. Keep up the good work. Now, I love this because I do wordle every morning with my mom. It's how I know she woke up in the morning we said each other our wordles. I just love that other people do it. So this axolotl is a wild axolotl and they're near extinction due to the growth in Mexico City which is draining and polluting their lake, their last remaining natural habitat.
Allison Gill
Okay, so If I had to guess the model of this axolotl, I would say green.
Dana Goldberg
I would say green. Green and a little bit plump. It's a plump green axolotl.
Allison Gill
He's very cool.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
Thank you for that. Oh, yeah. There's the wordle solution. Other trump wrist grift. Yep. Fantastic. Thank you, John, so much. All right, next up from Tom. Aw, sweet baby. Sleeping on the couch. AG and dg, what's happening this weekend? I attended my first protest. Yay. Another first timer. At the Omaha, Nebraska, no Kings rally. I went with my best friend from work, and it was awesome. I'm hooked. I will be attending any future protests in the Omaha metro area for my pod pet tax. Here's a picture of my cat Nala and my dog Boomer, keeping me company while I listen to the daily beans and drink my coffee. Tom, first of all, thanks for writing in. Second of all, thanks for going to a protest. Third of all, thanks for going to future protests. Thank you so much for the pod pet tariff. Look at these babies.
Dana Goldberg
I love it. They're so cute.
Allison Gill
Clearly a beagle, right?
Dana Goldberg
I think so, yeah.
Allison Gill
I ask with a question mark. Clearly. It's a.
Dana Goldberg
It's clearly a beagle, right?
Allison Gill
Correct.
Dana Goldberg
It's clearly a dog, right, Dana? Yeah, it's a dog.
Allison Gill
Thank you. I see a dog and a cat. I win.
Dana Goldberg
You won. This one's from Anonymous. No pronouns given. It has taken a while, but I got my daughter's birth certificate updated to reflect her correct gender and to change her name. I also got her name changed on her Social Security card. It was more complicated than I anticipated, but my goal was to get it done before she finished high school and entered the workforce. I work in the hiring process for my employer, and I know that if a new hire's name on their ID and Social Security don't match, the employer uses the name as it appears on the Social Security card. So I felt that getting that updated was the most important step in supporting her gender identity. Yay. Next, we'll get her state id. My pet tax is my orange boy, Obi Wan and Lexi. Anakin. Anakin and Obi Wan. Those are fantastic. And anonymous. You rock. Great fucking parenting.
Allison Gill
Wait. Right? And what incredible support. Yep. Because I'm thinking about this now. You got your Social Security card, you got your birth certificate. That's it. Right? Like that. Yes.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, hopefully. I mean, there's lawsuits with. Going on with the passports right now, but this. This is good movement right here. This is fantastic.
Allison Gill
Right? But if you got your birth certificate and you got your. Yep, A Social Security card. Then you can get your passport with the property.
Dana Goldberg
I hope so.
Allison Gill
Amazing. Oh, next up from Christine. Look at this amazing photo. Power to the people. Shout out to my 11 year old. First protest in our neighborhood in Reston, Virginia. Beautiful. Oh, and it says, disney has the only royalty I need.
Dana Goldberg
That's awesome.
Allison Gill
Oh, she's lovely. Well done, Christine.
Dana Goldberg
All right, I'll take this one. This is from Kat. No pronouns given. My friend and I went to the no King event in Chandler. It was so fun. I received an email from the indivisible group who estimated the crowd was about 4,000 people. I only saw the police once when a group of them on bikes went by. I felt so hopeful seeing people of all ages protest in 110 degree weather. Thanks for what you do. I feel smarter after listening to YouTube. I'm sharing a pic of me with my friend Nikki. We live in Arizona but grew up in Massachusetts. True blue liberals living in a red area. You sure are. But you are also doing the work.
Allison Gill
Amazing. I used to live down on Chandler Boulevard on the Ran Chandler Loop. That's more Ahwatukee than Chandler, but wonderful. Yeah, it's small red, right?
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
So 4,4000 people is a lot.
Dana Goldberg
I love that.
Allison Gill
And it's a dry heat. That's what we have to tell ourselves. When you're outside, it's like you're in a blast furnace.
Dana Goldberg
The breeze is hot. Yeah.
Allison Gill
Like it sucks.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. It's like just having a hair dryer in your face.
Allison Gill
Yeah, totally. Thank you for that. That's a wonderful. All right, next up from anonymous pronoun, she and her. I live in a red rural town in Tennessee. Our county, Monroe county, is huge with respect to land, but not very populated. Under 50,000, there are five cities in the county. My city, Madisonville, is the county seat and it has a population of 5,000. The county overwhelmingly voted for Little T, a name I coined by a friend of mine. Excuse me. As a side note, within the last few months, the Little T signs and flags, they've been coming down. I believe small towns like mine are the canary in the coal mine for the impact of tariffs. Our no Kings rally took place at the courthouse. Good news note number one, I don't remember ever having a protest there. I typically go to the Knoxville protests. Good news number two, people showed up. Good news number three, we had over 100 people at the final head count. Good news number four. Of the people driving by, we were probably 50, 50 split between support and people flipping us the bird. Pretty great. Honestly, I can't tell you how incredible this made me feel. Showing up in small rural towns is important. It helps get our voices heard. For one thing, we are the forgotten ones in small towns and it makes people think that we don't matter. Showing up in protest like no kings helps everyone know our voices do matter and will help engage towns just like mine and could help demonstrate the power of our voices. I have enclosed one picture taken just before we all left, as well as a cat pic and a pic of my three sisters Garden Second side note, thank you for having Justin Gill on your show again. I'm also a nurse and have now contacted my local and national nursing organizations to ask about our position on RFK Jr and his reckless behavior. Nurses are the largest segment of the medical professions and it's time we made some noise. So thank you and Justin Gill for your efforts. It matters. Oh, Anonymous, thank you for this.
Dana Goldberg
That's awesome.
Allison Gill
Garden Kitty. Look at everybody at the Monroe County Courthouse.
Dana Goldberg
Love it.
Allison Gill
Hell yeah. Okay, so that town, what did she say, had 500 people or something? Or I'm trying to find out where that. Where it said that. Madisonville.
Dana Goldberg
Population about 5,000.
Allison Gill
That's incredible. Yeah, that is a small, small town and you had so many people.
Dana Goldberg
All right, all right, we've got Mr. Midnight Pronouns he and him on the DJ. Just kidding. Oh, ladies of the laguminati belladames avec merci. Is that extra? I kind of think it's extra. I wanted to do a dual shout out, one for my son and one for me. Bean's patrons have had the chance to meet young Midnight back in March, but he has just completed an incredible run for his junior year in high school after struggling with some algebra. Hereditary dysfunction, definitely. Through hard work and grit, he brought his grade up to an A minus from a solid B. He has more discipline and courage than I've ever did at his age, and I could not be more proud of him my self. Shout out is one I've been treasuring. I've been striving for this moment since you started asking for thesis and dissertation titles because I finally completed my own. I received my Master's in International Relations and Global Security on 1 June. My concentration is in conflict resolution. I wanted to do conflict initiation, but my professor said that was unskilled labor. My thesis is titled Practicing Assessing Peacekeeping Training and Its Impact on Operational Outcomes in Africa. I'm a career national security professional, so I knew training was important, but I was dumbfounded to See how much of an impact UN peacekeeping training had on operational outcomes in the Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo and Darfur. It's easy to say there's not a lot of peace to keep her. But UN forces prevented tens of thousands of casualties. In the areas I studied, tens of thousands of people had the chance to live and strive regardless of circumstance. It's far from ideal, but it's enough for hope for my pet tariff is John Ronald Ruel Lucius McGillicuddy. Tolkien or Tolkien.
Allison Gill
Goodness.
Dana Goldberg
His name got longer depending on how much trouble he was in. He's crossed the rainbow bridge, but I'm sure he's waiting on the other side. In a tweed jacket and leather patches on the elbow, a pipe somewhere about his person, and a sedate bark or two, Tolkie was the best boy anyone could ask for, even when interrupting, making the bed. Thank you both for leading the charge. Your courage is a beacon, a light to show those behind you a way out of the darkness. It's a heavy burden, but AG and DG make it look easy to carry. Never underestimate how much of an impact you have. And thank you again. We love you.
Allison Gill
Oh, thanks, Mr. Min. This does look like an English gentleman. Literature professor. Tenured.
Dana Goldberg
Yes, it does.
Allison Gill
This dog. So now I can see why he's wearing a corduroy jacket with leather patches on the little tweeds. Excuse me. And a pipe. Fumun Peep. Oh, my God, what a cool dog. Congratulations. That's a cool thesis.
Dana Goldberg
Yes, it is. That's awesome.
Allison Gill
Learning about all that, that must have been, like, just mind blowing. Thank you so much. And if you have. That's something we used to. If you're a new listener, we. We ask for dissertation and theses titles because. Because they're like, I remember mine. It's like eight pages. The title is eight pages long. So if you want to share your master's thesis or doctoral dissertation titles with us, we would love to hear it.
Dana Goldberg
Absolutely.
Allison Gill
And you can send it to us along with any other good news you want to share@dailybeanspod.com and click on Contact. Tomorrow we got a great show. We're going to have representative Sarah Jacobs on Wonderful, who I love. And we're also going to have Phil Williams, the nosiest bitch in Nashville.
Dana Goldberg
All right.
Allison Gill
He has got the background on that proud boy that was arrested during the no Kings march. Apparently he hangs out with Nazis.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, boy.
Allison Gill
We're going to talk to him and his exclude about his exclusive reporting on that tomorrow. Do you have any final thoughts my friend.
Dana Goldberg
I do not.
Allison Gill
All right, everybody, we will be back in your ears tomorrow. Allison kicks off the episode with a rapid-fire rundown of the day's major news:
Vance Belter Faces Federal Charges: Belter is charged with six federal felonies in connection with the assassination of Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. The Hennepin County District Attorney has indicated intentions to seek first-degree murder charges.
VA Doctors' New Refusal Rights: New regulations permit Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) doctors to refuse treatment to unmarried veterans and those who identify as Democrats.
Gavin Newsom vs. Trump Legal Battle: California Governor Gavin Newsom has fully briefed his bid for an injunction to prevent former President Donald Trump from federalizing the National Guard, with hearings set for later in the week.
Judicial Ruling on NIH Cuts: A federal judge has ruled former President Trump's National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding cuts as illegal.
US Air Tankers Deployed to the Middle East: The sudden movement of US Air Force KC-135 and KC-46 aerial refueling aircraft to Europe raises alarm and speculation about underlying motives.
Trump's G7 Missteps: President Trump has called for Russia's readmission into the G7 and made public gaffes, including misnaming a UK-US trade deal as one with the EU.
Allison and Dana celebrate their listeners through the "Gay of the Day" segment, showcasing influential LGBTQ+ figures and highlighting their contributions to social justice and visibility.
Dana praises the community’s engagement, noting that episodes receive nearly half a million views across social platforms, bolstering historical representation against efforts to erase these narratives.
Allison and Dana provide a comprehensive analysis of the Vance Belter case, articulating the gravity and implications of his actions.
Key Developments:
Charges and Accusations: Belter faces six federal charges, including stalking, murder, and firearms violations. He is accused of:
Legal Proceedings:
Belter's Statement and Capture:
Notable Quote:
Mary Moriarty, Hennepin County Attorney:
“[...] the second degree murder charges were filed on Saturday in order to obtain a nationwide arrest warrant.”
[07:28]
The sudden deployment of approximately thirty KC-135 and KC-46 aerial refueling aircraft, alongside B2 bombers to Europe, signals heightened military readiness in the Middle East amidst escalating tensions.
Discussion Points:
Potential Joint Actions: Speculation around a possible coordinated US-Israel move against Iran, especially after recent statements urging Iran to sign nuclear deals and evacuate Tehran.
Political Ramifications: Analysts express concern over increased militarization and the potential for unintended conflicts, emphasizing the destabilizing effect of such deployments.
Key Quote:
Allison Gill:
“This is such a bad situation.”
[05:24]
The episode sheds light on the ongoing legal confrontation between California Governor Gavin Newsom and former President Donald Trump regarding the federalization of the National Guard.
Highlights:
Preliminary Injunction: Newsom's motion, fully briefed as of the episode's release, seeks to block Trump’s attempts to deploy the National Guard in California, pending the outcome of the hearing.
Administrative Challenges: Administrative stays have delayed the hearing, prompting the hosts to promise updates in the following episode.
A significant judicial decision by U.S. District Judge William Young addresses the Trump administration's executive orders to cut NIH funding for research related to racial minorities and LGBTQ+ communities.
Details:
Judge Young's Statement:
“...there has never been governmental racial discrimination like this. The NIH cuts... are illegal and void.”
[14:40]
Legal Implications: The ruling mandates the immediate restoration of funding for affected research programs, highlighting clear discrimination against marginalized groups.
Administration’s Defense Rejected: The Department of Justice argued the cuts were policy-driven and not subject to judicial review, a stance Judge Young firmly rejected due to the discriminatory intent behind the executive orders.
In a controversial move, the VA has instituted new guidelines allowing medical professionals to refuse treatment based on political affiliation or marital status, effectively discriminating against Democrats and unmarried veterans.
Key Points:
Affected Professionals: Guidelines extend to psychologists, dentists, chiropractors, nurse practitioners, optometrists, podiatrists, social workers, and speech therapists.
Contradiction to Federal Law: While federal mandates require treatment regardless of race, color, religion, or sex, the new VA rules circumvent these protections by focusing on characteristics not explicitly covered by federal law.
Implications for Veterans: Unmarried veterans or those who identify as Democrats may find themselves denied essential medical services, raising significant ethical and legal concerns.
Quote Highlight:
Allison Gill:
“If you're single, you voted for Kamala. They don't have to treat you.”
[16:41]
President Trump's participation in the G7 summit in Alberta, Canada, was marked by diplomatic missteps and controversial statements regarding Russia.
Noteworthy Incidents:
Russia's Readmission Plea: Trump advocated for Russia's reinstatement into the G7, attributing the Ukraine conflict to the exclusion of Russia from the group.
Trade Deal Blunder: During a press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Trump mistakenly referred to a UK-US trade agreement as an EU deal, causing public embarrassment.
Quotes:
Allison Gill:
“He is blaming Obama and everybody, by the way, the whole world kicking Russia out of the G8. That's why there's a war, even though it's ridiculous.”
[18:20]
Dana Goldberg:
“He just. He's just a piece of...”
