Daily beans. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Thursday, May 7, 2026. Today, the FBI raided the office of Democratic Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas, who played a key role in the state's redistricting efforts. Republicans unveil a map to carve up Tennessee's majority black House district. Satellite images show that Iran hit far more US military assets than previously reported. ICE is reporting the 18th detainee death in its concentration camps, putting the agency on track for a new record. Michigan Democrats keep control of the state Senate in a special election win that offers clues about the upcoming midterms. Several Indiana state senators who opposed Trump's redistricting efforts lost their primaries. And Ohio's Sherrod Brown has secured the Democratic nomination for U.S. senate. I'm Alison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Allison Gill
So happy it's Thursday. What is up, my friend?
Dana Goldberg
Not much. I love me some Sherrod Brown and wonderful wife Connie. Just a really lovely couple and a hell of a senator for Ohio. And I'm glad that he is running to take his seat back because, ooh, maybe some people have learned some lessons.
Allison Gill
Yeah, dude won his primary with, like, 92% of the vote.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
It was pretty clear really early on who was. Who was going to win that primary. And I love being on fundraising calls with his team and him and because it's like being at an old family barbecue reunion because we all come from the same parts of Ohio, we're all Browns fans. Like, it's really fun. Get to run into, like, Drew Carey and, you know, just all these amazing folks who support Sherrod and Connie. So really happy to hear this. This is one that we could flip on our way to trying to regain the Senate, which is so important. It's an important part of the plan. It's really important that we get the Senate so that we can bl block every single Supreme Court nominee until 2028. 2029.
Dana Goldberg
Absolutely.
Allison Gill
When we get the White House back. All right. Everybody, we have so much news to get to today. Some of it's good, some of it's bad. But let's get to all of it. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up, bad news. Fashy from the New York Times. FBI agents on Wednesday searched the office of a powerful Democratic state legislator in Virginia who played a key role in the high stakes congressional redistricting fight. The legislator, Louise Lucas of Portsmouth, is a senior leader in the state Senate, where she has served for more than 30 years. Two people familiar with the case said the search was related to an investigation opened during the Biden administration that has continued examining possible corruption and bribery related to marijuana dispensary businesses. Now, FBI agents executed the search warrant at Ms. Lucas's office and a neighboring marijuana dispensary, according to people familiar with the matter, speaking on the condition of anonymity. Other locations were also searched. According to those people, Ms. Lucas's influence was crucial to a recent battle over congressional redistricting. Last month, as we know, voters in Virginia approved an unusual. I wouldn't say unusual. A awesome plan to redraw district boundaries in the middle of a decade, as opposed to a long tradition of redrawing the lines after every census, which is conducted once a decade. They don't mention here that Virginia didn't start this shit. Okay, yeah, don't start no shit. Won't be no shit, sirs. At New York Times, after Republicans complained that the new Virginia map was unfair to their voters, Ms. Lucas was characteristically blunt on social media. Y' all started it. That's what she said in a reply to Senator Ted Cruz, who's a Republican of Texas. So she said, y' all started it. We finished it. That's what she said.
Dana Goldberg
And then of course, the FBI was like, we need to raid her house because she used the F bomb and she's a lady and shouldn't do those things.
Allison Gill
And they're saying about Biden era investigation. Okay, one of two things is going on here. Either that's or there was a Biden era investigation and the Department of Justice determined there was not enough to bring a case on against anything.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, those are the options. We're going to find out which.
Allison Gill
Yeah, all right.
Dana Goldberg
This one's also from the Times. Tennessee Republicans on Wednesday proposed a congressional map aimed at diluting the state's lone majority black district, a swift response to last week's Supreme Court gutting of the voting rights laws. Now, the new map slices Memphis, specifically a majority black city, and Shelby county into three districts and likely will give Republicans the ability to flip Tennessee's lone remaining Democratic seat, which includes the city. Democratic lawmakers, whose opposition means little under the Republican supermajority in the state's General assembly, and the black leaders across Tennessee. They've compared the effort to carve up the 9th congressional district to Jim Crow era voter suppression tactics. They've accused conservatives of a power grab that undermines black voters in Memphis, who have long favored Democrats. Republicans, cheered on by Trump, have rejected those claims. Instead, they've said that they are responding to the Supreme Court ruling which raised the bar for what constitutes a racial gerrymander under the Voting Rights act of 1965. Under the map, Shelby county, which includes Memphis, it's split into three districts now. One district runs along the state's western border before extending down to include part of Williamson County. That's a suburban county just outside Nashville. Two other districts now share part of Shelby county and more rural conservative communities in Tennessee. Louisiana last week delayed its House primary, though thousands of absentee votes had already been cast to allow its legislature to draft a new map. Map the South Carolina Legislature. They also are facing conservative pressure to quickly adopt a new congressional map. Alabama is barred by court order from adopting a new map until the 2030 census, but it is trying to get the order lifted. In anticipation of a favorable ruling, lawmakers convened a special session this week with the goal of allowing the state to delay certain House primaries. In Florida, debate over new map that could give Republicans up to four new seats was underway as the Supreme Court ruling became public. And I will put as much emphasis as I can on this if for some reason there's so much shenanigans with all of this gerrymandering. Senate races are statewide races. They cannot gerrymander their way out of losing a Senate seat.
Allison Gill
But this kind of going on with the House has been going on forever. It's why the Voting Rights act was passed.
Dana Goldberg
Absolutely.
Allison Gill
You redline black voters into the same part of town and then you split them up. Yeah, because if they, you know, if we weren't redlining through systematic racism, it'd be more dispersed around the state. You couldn't get them concentrated to, to crack them up like that.
Dana Goldberg
Right.
Allison Gill
That's why it's called pack and crack. It's absolutely disgusting. And they've been doing it forever. All right. From the post. Iranian strikes have damaged or destroyed at least 228 structures or pieces of equipment at US military sites across the Middle east since the war began. Hitting hangars, barracks, Fuel depots, aircraft, and key radar, communications and air defense equipment. And that's according to a Washington Post analysis of satellite imagery. The amount of destruction is far larger than what has been publicly acknowledged by the government or previously reported. The threat of air attacks rendered some of the US bases in the region too dangerous to staff at normal levels. And commanders moved most of the personnel from these sites out of the range of Iranian fire at the start of the war. They retreated. Hegseth retreated. Satellite imagery of the Middle east is unusually difficult to acquire because two of the largest commercial providers, Vantor and Planet, have complied with requests from Hegseth, their biggest customer, to limit delay or indefinitely withhold the publication of imagery of the region while the war is ongoing, making it difficult or impossible to assess the actual damage done by Iran and their counter strikes. The experts who reviewed the Post's analysis said the damage at the site suggests the US Military had underestimated Iran's targeting abilities, not adapted sufficiently to modern drone warfare, and left some bases underprotected. Experts said that the vulnerability of the military sites to Iran's attacks was likely the consequence of numerous factors. Chief among them is that Iranian forces have been more resilient than the Trump administration anticipated. In addition, experts say the US Military has not adequately adapted to the use of one way attack drones, something they said planners should have learned from observing the war in Ukraine. They also pointed to structural challenges, including a shortfall of fortified shelters that could protect troops and equipment at key positions and likely targets. And also don't forget Trump gutted the Voice of America, put Carrie Lake in charge of it, gutted Radio Free Europe and all that. And they fired a bunch of high level officials and generals at CENTCOM Central Command. Yeah. Remember when they like gutted it so that they couldn't report out the truth about what the actual damage and toll of this, this war has been? I mean, it's not a surprise, but now we've got satellite imagery proving it. Yeah.
Dana Goldberg
All right. This is from CBS, U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement. On Friday they reported the 18th death of an individual in its custody so far this year. This is putting the agency on track to record a new all time high in detainee deaths. If this grim trend continues, and I fear that it will, I don't even know if I trust that number. By the way, a 33 year old man from Cuba died in an ICE detention center in Georgia on Tuesday. The agency reported this notifying the Congress and public press release. I said that Denny Aiden Gonzalez was found unresponsive in his cell at the privately operated Stewart Detention center in Lumpkin, Georgia, late Tuesday. The agency described the suspected cause of death as suicide and said its investigation is ongoing. Now, the reported suicide is the 18th ICE detainee death in the first four months of 2026. Last year, ICE recorded 31 detainee deaths, a two decade high at that point. By the way, that nearly surpassed the all time record set in 2004 when 32 deaths were reported at the Trump administration. This has greatly expanded as we know, ISIS detention apparatus, reports of substandard conditions, including overcrowding, inadequate medical care and insufficient food. They've all emerged throughout the country and it's just going to get worse.
Allison Gill
Yeah, I'm with you on the underreporting of the potential underreporting of these deaths. And I'm also very wary about them ruling them a suicide.
Dana Goldberg
A hundred percent just found unresponsive in his cell. Okay.
Allison Gill
Again, I have no. This is all speculation. This is alleged. Don't sue me. All right, next up from the Associated Press, a majority of Republican Indiana state senators whose opponents were endorsed by Trump lost on Tuesday, a display of the president's enduring influence over his party after lawmakers rejected his redistricting plan five months ago. I'm not sure I would go that far because generally the people that Trump endorses lose, but they didn't in this case. Of the seven challengers endorsed by Trump, five at least have won. One incumbent prevailed and the seventh race was too close to call. State Senator Travis Holdman, one of the incumbents to lose his primary, said he's at peace with his defeat. He voted against redistricting and faced more than $1.3 million in attack ads funded by organizations tied to Banks, Jim Banks, and Governor Mike Braun. I did what my constituents asked me to do and it cost me my job. But that's okay. Holdman warned that a more aggressive style of campaigning is arriving in his state. Quote, welcome to D.C. politics in Indiana, because this means that's what's coming. That's what he said. The race that was too close to call was the most expensive of the seven primaries. The super PACs, led by banks and Braun, combined to spend more than $2.2 million on advertising attacking Senator Spencer Deary, according to the ad tracking firm Ad Impact. Deary spent about 815,000 on advertising, according to Ad Impact, having only spent a combined $142,000 on the 2022 primary and general election when he was first elected. So he spent four times at least what he did in 2022, and it was still less than half of what was spent against him. Wow. Now, Trump began leaning on Republican led states last year to redraw their congressional maps to make it easier for his party to hold its thin majority in the House. Although redistricting is normally done once a decade after a new census, Trump wanted to abandon tradition to gain a political edge. Texas was the first to do it, and the White House pressured Indiana to go along, too. J.D. vance met with state politicians in Washington and Indianapolis, and Trump weighed in by conference call. But Indiana senators rebuffed Trump's effort, one of the president's first significant political defeats of his second term. The redistricting fight divided Republicans in Indiana, a state Trump won three times by no less than 16 points. Brawn banks and organizations such as Turning Point Action have worked alongside Trump to unseat those incumbents.
Dana Goldberg
All right, thank you so much, Alison. This is from the Associated Press. Democrat Chedrick Greene won a special election in Michigan on Tuesday. What this did is it secured his party's control of the state Senate through the remainder of governor Gretchen Whitmer's term. This is a really important seat. Green, who happens to be a firefighter and a Marine veteran, defeated Republican Jason Tunney, a former prosecutor, in the race for Michigan's 35th Senate District, which includes Saginaw and Bay City and is surrounded by more conservative rural areas. Democrats had held one seat majority in the chamber, putting control at state now. The race was closely watched as a potential indicator for the upcoming midterms in this battleground state. The district's located about 100 miles north of Detroit and includes Saga, Saginaw, Bay City and Midland. It is seen as reflective of the entire state and includes part of Saginaw county, the only Michigan county to back the winning presidential candidate in each of the last five elections. Interesting. Whitmer, a Democrat as we know and badass, is term limited, setting up a competitive race in November to succeed her. Now, with Democrats currently controlling the state Senate 19 to 18, Tuesday's outcome was crucial for deciding the state's legislative agenda in the mins before she leaves office in January. Republicans had made the timing of the special election a central issue, arguing that Whitmer, a Democrat, as I said, waited too long to call it, leaving the district without representation in the state senate for nearly 500 days. Greene's victory keeps Democrats in the majority. Had Tunney prevailed, the Senate would have been tied, making it tougher for Democrats to advance her agenda. The Michigan House is controlled by Republicans the race is being watched as a test of voter sentiment ahead of the midterm elections when Democrats are looking to regain power in Congress. John hall is a 69 year old self described independent and said Tuesday that he voted for green with the economy the pressing issue for him. He said he spent $58 at the gas station before driving to the public library in Bay City to vote. He said it's taking a bite out of a lot of people's budgets right now, adding it would have cost between 35 and 40 to fill up his car's tank two months ago. Two months ago. Of course, Trump wants to reopen the straight now. Although Republican Donald Trump carried all three counties, I question that in the 2024 presidential race, the portions of the counties that fall within District 35, they're more competitive. McDonald Rivet won the seat in 2022 with 53% of the vote as Kamala Harris barely edged Trump in the district in 2024, 49.7% to 48.9% on the strength of her 17% point lead in Saginaw portion of that district. Wow. So he won by 20 points in an area that Kamala Harris won by less than one point. That's a 19 point swing. Well, not swing gain. It's a 19 point gain. That's awesome.
Allison Gill
Yeah. And it barely holds on to that state Senate for Michigan. So that's very, very good news. Boy, we keep winning big in these races and it pleases me.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, it sure does. I don't know if there's been one special election that we've lost. Unless we haven't heard about it because we haven't reported on it.
Allison Gill
No, it's 31 to nothing as far as I know. Wow. Maybe 32. I, I haven't heard. I think it, it would be, there would be a lot of noise if a Republican actually pulled off a special election win.
Dana Goldberg
I think you're right.
Allison Gill
Somewhere in the last year and I, I just, I don't, I don't think I've seen that. I didn't know Michigan State House was Republican held.
Dana Goldberg
I didn't either. I, I was sort of surprised by that.
Allison Gill
Let's see, Michigan state House, who controls it? I am an expert.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
Republican Party. 58, 52. I thought they had a trifecta there in Michigan.
Dana Goldberg
I thought they did too. Maybe that was with the governor, Lieutenant
Allison Gill
governor and I must have been thinking of Minnesota maybe.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, maybe.
Allison Gill
But anyway, still very, very good news. Thank you so much for that. All right, everybody, we've got more good news, but we have to take a quick break, so stick around.
Dana Goldberg
We'll be right back after these messages. We'll be right back.
Allison Gill

MSW Media, Everybody. Welcome back. It's time for the Good News. Good News. And today is a special edition of Good News. Because we're gonna have good news and one tiny bit of breaking bad news. But let's tell you about what the good news is first. You can send it to us, by the way, any bit of good news. It can be big or small, it can be recent or in a long time ago. Whatever it is, that'll bring a smile to our faces. You can give a shout out to a loved one or a small business or a non profit or a government program that's helped you or a loved one, a self shout out. We love those. Anything at all, just send it to us. And all you got to do is attach your POD pet tariff to get your stuff right on the air. Which means just attach a photo that will make us happy. It can be kids, it can be puppies, it can be your shelter dog. And we could try to figure out what kind of breeds are in there or which breeds watched, you know, while the whole thing went down. You can send us bird watching photos, which can be birds or you flipping the bird to Trump buildings. It can be what you're growing, what you're making, what you're creating, painting, crafting. Maybe you're throwing something on a pottery wheel. Whatever it is, we would love to see it. Send it all to us dailybeanspod.com click on contact before we get to the good trouble, I just want to give you this little bit of bad news. And I'm still reading through this decision, but it appears that Judge Boulay in Georgia has thrown out, has denied the case where Fulton county sued to get their ballots back after the FBI raid with Tulsi Gabbard. I wasn't expecting them to prevail on this. I always felt that this was another step. You know, first you do the TUI requests, then you do the regular requests, then you sue to get the requests. Then after that, once you try everything, maybe there's something else that comes next. But this is a blow to Fulton county trying to get their ballots back. But Boulay, I believe, is a Republican appointed judge. So he's also the judge who refused to let the crazy like election fraud conspiracy theorist who it was the reason for the affidavit to get the search warrant in the first place. Wouldn't let him testify, wouldn't let Fulton county bring him up, the Georgia election board bring him up to testify. So I didn't think it would go their way. But that's what happened here. Late breaking news today. All right, let's shift back. We had that great news about the Michigan State Senate and now we're gonna get to the good news. But first is your good trouble. Your good trouble is in response to the Department of Homeland Security's decision to shut down the watchdog office responsible for investigating abuse at detention centers. We're have a link to this story in the show notes and this is from the advocacy director at Detention Watch Network. She issued the following statement. Immigration and Customs Enforcement purposefully obscures the truth, hides information from the public, and retaliates against anyone who speaks out against the abusive nature of immigrant detention. For the more than 60,000 people in ice custody, every measure of oversight is crucial because lives are in jeopardy. Quote, Deaths in ICE custody continue to skyrocket it past previous record highs amidst the Trump administration's massive expansion of immigrant detention and increasing ICE violence, a shocking 18 people, as we covered earlier in the show, have died in ICE custody this calendar year and 49 people total have died under this administration. Trump's cruel mass detention expansion is exacerbating the inhumane conditions that are inherent to ICE's detention system and have been well documented for decades. ICE's immigrant detention system deprives people of freedom, isolates people from loved ones, and subjects people to abysmal conditions, including inadequate medical care and mental health services, inedible food and racist abuse. Over the past year, there have been increasing reports of death, medical neglect, use of force, isolation, retaliation, overcrowding, lack of food, rampant transfers that cut people off from their loved ones, and support networks. So tell Congress, no money for ice, no money for Customs and Border Protection. For the last couple of months, members of Congress or Democrats at least, have stood firm against funding ICE and cbp, thanks to constant pressure from us. Now Republicans are using the reconciliation process to push up to an additional $140 billion to fund ICE and Customs and Border Protection through 2035. These billions will be on top of the 150 billion already given to ICE last year in the big beautiful bill. So we're going to have a link to find your representative@house.gov and more ways that you can help@ DetentionWatchNetwork.org so thank you very much for that good trouble today.
Dana Goldberg
Thank you so much, Allison. All right, this is her anonymous pronoun. She and her hello ag&d g. Thank you for the swearing. I told the Hubs this morning that I need to make an audio clip of Dana saying fuck no, it lives rent free in my head. I wanted to share some info for a gallery exhibition that opens this week in Norfolk, Virginia. The show is titled When There Are Nine and features work by women and women identifying artists this is from the promotional postcard, and I quote, the title references Ginsburg's famous response to the question, when will there be enough women on the Supreme Court? Her answer, when there are nine, has become a rallying cry for gender parity and representation. This exhibition expands on that statement, offering a space where creative voices reflect on the systems that shape women's lives and the futures they are forging. I'm so honored to be a part of this exhibit. The show is in the off site gallery located in the MacArthur center, and it runs from May 7 to June 26. There's more information about the show can be found on the gallery's website. We're going to have a link in the show notes because it's way too long for me to tell you. Unfortunately, this will be the last show in this location. As the city of Norfolk has decided to tear down this beautiful mall and repurpose the land, the current tenants have had to find new facilities. Among them, three galleries and a really bitching art store called the 757 Creative Reuse Center. Fingers crossed for all of the tenants. I'm attaching a picture of one of my pieces in the show, an interpretation of RBG's descent collar titled I Dissent. The additional picture is of my gremlin cat, Lydia, who is the epitome of a black cat. Don't let her fool you. She might be cute, but she'll still get you. Thank you again for all you do. Keep fighting the good fight.
Allison Gill
This is. I want this.
Dana Goldberg
This is gorgeous piece of art. It is a gorgeous piece of art heart.
Allison Gill
Oh, my goodness. It's a. It's a necklace. It's a descent color, but it's. It's bedazzled. Yeah, it's beautiful. Oh, my goodness. Thank you so much. Anonymous. This is incredible. Hi, black kitty. Oh, you're so cute. I'm gonna pet the belly and I'm sure I'll get it for it, but I. I can't resist a belly. All right, next up from Tony Pronouns, he and him. Dear Dana, Allison, and all the ships at sea. Oh, it's Tony. It's our flag friend. I meant to send this in last week, but life and shit. In honor of Lesbian Week of visibility, I struck the intersex inclusive progress pride flag I fly on my truck and I hoisted the lesbian pride flag in its place. I try to park next to cars with MAGA stickers to give them the queer cooties. But when I get the chance to park next to a car with a pride or Progressive stickers. I'll do that too. At the grocery, I found an open space next to a Subaru well decorated with the rainbow HRC Dropkick, Murphy's Rebel alliance, and other stickers. I feel like this could be your car, Dana. When I came out, I saw two women hanging out by the Subaru. They were obviously waiting to see who drove the old F150 with the lesbian pride flag on it. I saw them before they saw me, so I was prepared when they saw me and figured out it was my truck and started to giggle, I made that Obi Wan mind control gesture and managed to say, I am not the lesbian you are looking for, before cracking myself up.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, my God. That's funny.
Allison Gill
They lost it too. And when we all recovered, we chatted a bit about Star wars, the resistance, and the need to find community to survive these times. Hang in there, friends. Look at this.
Dana Goldberg
It's awesome.
Allison Gill
Brilliant. Brilliant. Thank you, Tony and all the ships at sea appreciate you.
Dana Goldberg
Awesome. All right, this is from Barb Pronoun. She and her hello AG and dg, the ladies of the beans who keep me sane. I've been wanting to write in since May, but I never got my act together first. Wait, it's only May 6th. You're doing fine, Barb. Actually, that may not be the right month, but we'll find out. First, I'd like to give a shout out to my youngest daughter who struggled and under undergrad, but graduated with honors from grad school and is now an amazing school counselor at a high school.
Allison Gill
Hell yeah.
Dana Goldberg
I'm so very proud of her. Second is one of many misheard song lyrics from my youth. Think the seventies. I sang the Aerosmith song. Train kept on rolling sharp yet train kept on rolling as plain pepperoni all night long loud and proud at fire hall dances. Sing my lyrics next time you hear that song. Thank goodness the music was so loud and it drowned me out. Finally, a question for Dana. My middle daughter and I signed up for the HRC event in Rochester on May 16. However, you have been talking about a comedy club performance on May 17th. Just to clarify, are you performing at both events? We chose the HRC event as we now have a trans son trans grandson in our family. I want to do everything we can to support him. My pot pet tariff. I present my daughter's cat, Hazel. Tiny head with one or two brain cells floating around in a very big body. Even the vet says that has an unusually tiny head. She's definitely not the brightest bulb of the species, but she loves to Snuggle and gets into other people's things. Thank you for all you do to keep us informed with swearing and bring us some joy every day. Barb, to answer your question, I can understand why there's some confusion. The HRC gala on the 16th, what I do with those is they give me about five minutes of comedy, and then there's a live auction and a paddle that I run. So I'm sort of their fundraiser for the night, but I only get about five minutes of comedy. On the 17th in Rochester, I'm going to be doing my long set. It's 45 to an hour. There's going to be another comedian opening for me. And V esper from under the Desk News, who's an incredible viral sensation on all social media and where a lot of people go get their news outside of the Daily Beans, will be doing a Q and A with me after the show. So the 16th is the HRC gala. If that's where you end up, please make sure you find me, even if you're just volunteering or if you happen to be a guest in there after I get off stage, I'm pretty easy to find if you can see me, like, going toward my table. But the 17th is my comedy show. There's still a lot of tickets left. If you decide you want to do both, it's going to be two very different situations. So wherever you feel best and whichever one you like to support, I am fully behind.
Allison Gill
So you're at both?
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, I will be at both. Cool.
Allison Gill
Okay. Yeah. This cat does have a tiny head. Can confirm. And that brings me your pop culture movie quote of the day. If you can guess, it's quote, Eat my dust, small head. You let me know if you know what that's from. Next good news segment. Next up from Anonymous pronouns, he and him. Good evening, lovely ladies from the Blue Lagoon. Ha ha ha ha. It's me again. Nicolai, as in E. Coli. I hereby declare I'm joining your movement that I would like to call Supreme Kaboom Reform Act Movement from the Blue. Legume or scramble? Let's tell the fuckers to scram. Much love. And P.S. did you know that Donald J. Trump has an anagram for his real name? L. John Damp Turd. I'm attaching the proof. Nice. Thank you very much for that. I love it. Supreme Kaboom Reform Act Movement from the Blue Lagoon.
Dana Goldberg
Nice. All right, next one from Lee Pronoun. She and her. Hey, AG and D. I've been meaning to write in for a while with A new category for the good news. I'm going to call it Serendipity Beans. Serendipity beans. The very first time I ever listened to the beans, there was a good news story from the wife of a former high school classmate. Hi, Eric. And Mimi. And I reached out to him to reconnect. Then the first time my good news was read on the show, a friend from a different phase of my life reached out to reconnect. Hi, Chris. I thought it would also apply to Dana's having a beans listener waiter a few weeks ago, as well as the P A L N ideas coming together yesterday. I would love to hear others Beans related serendipitous encounters. Serendipity beans. Potpet taxes. My first child, Ellie, affectionately known as the Million Dollar Blink due to the pet relocation costs as we moved around the world with her and the multiple vet visits for stomach pumping due to her tendency to eat pretty much anything with a smell. Thank you as always, for keeping us informed. My day is not complete until I listen to you apply the appropriate profanity to the latest insanity. That's a great tagline if we didn't already have one. The appropriate profanity to the latest insanity.
Allison Gill
Oh, I like it. I like it. I'm writing it.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm pretty sure this is a cute little beagle.
Allison Gill
It looks like a beagle to me.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. And we have a beagle.
Allison Gill
Yay.
Dana Goldberg
How fucking great is that line?
Allison Gill
I'm writing it down right now.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
Sanity. I like how I have it right here in it, written in a digital document, but I need to write it down in ink and paper, otherwise I'll forget.
Dana Goldberg
So good.
Allison Gill
So, so good. You get this. Sweet baby. Yeah. Serendipity is good. There's another word for that, right? I can't remember what it is. Maybe. Maybe the thesaurus will tell me.
Dana Goldberg
Let's see.
Allison Gill
Thesaurus. Thesaurus is my favorite dinosaur. Let's see. Serendipity. Coincidence, Fluke, Opportunity. Fortunate chance, Godsend. Strike. No, I'll think of it. Anyway, I love that Serendipa. Beans.
Dana Goldberg
No, it's cute.
Allison Gill
Oh, awesome. All right, thank you so much for that. And the beagle. Next up is Anonymous. He, him. Hello, Queens of the beans. We all enjoy every day. I was listening to the Today show on May 5th regarding the Illinois school districts being. Oh, to the Today show. Not Today show, but the Today show regarding the Illinois school districts being targeted by the Trump administration as a parent of a trans kid in one of those districts was honestly horrifying to read. About the DOJ investigation on Facebook before our own district even got the heads up, we, my wife and I, had already started discussion with Leo about what would happen if the administration came to town. Yes, the DOJ announces their investigation before notifying the districts, But I have to point out one big thing. The segment mentioned targeting Illinois, but mainly the Chicago area. That couldn't be further from the truth. Oregon is a small river town of about 3,600 people in Ogle county, and it's about as rural as it gets and over an hour from the Iowa border. This region has some deep GOP roots. Reagan's birthplace and boyhood home is right next door in Dixon and Sterling. Being that I'm a transplant from deep southern Illinois, so I'm used to being the blue dot in the parts of the state that feel like Alabama or Illa Bama, as I call it, like Illinois. It's so important to show that these federal investigations are hitting the heart of rural America, not just the metropolitan hubs. They're now showing that they will target GOP areas in blue states to mess with the blue state more than protecting the red voting block. Hmm. For my pod pet tariff, I've attached a photo of the void. Not currently in his hidden void mode, but his regal mode. This is my cat, Billy, AKA Billy Von Billy, AKA Billiam. He's named after the Ikea Billy bookcase because his black fur matches the color scheme perfectly. I love the show. Keeps me sane during my hour long rural commute every morning. Thank you both and all of MSW Media for all the great work. Who would have guessed that news with swearing would be the thing to keep me grounded? Thank you, Jean in Oregon. Illinois. Oh, look at the pretty kitty. Such a pretty kitty. Bilium Lovett.
Dana Goldberg
I may be wrong, and I'm. I'm just throwing stuff out. Happenstance. Is that what we were looking for with coincidence? Like a happenstance?
Allison Gill
That's another one. Kismet. It's. I'm trying to think of the. It's that thing that you like. Well, you know, when you first, like, meet somebody that you really like and you're love bombing each other and you're like, I lived on that street and it has the same amount of letters as the street that you lived on on five years later. And we both went to a high school that has a dog as a mascot. Oh, my God. We're meant to be. You know, like, you got it. You search for all those little.
Dana Goldberg
All right, we're gonna keep thinking about it because I have Not. I'm not sure.
Allison Gill
Yeah.
Dana Goldberg
All right, well, this next one is from someone who's anonymous and wants to stay that way. But her pro towns are she and her. Hello, beans Queens. I'd like to give a shout out to our local school district here in Howard County, Maryland. Every year the school sends out an email letting the parents know about the sexual health unit. It. When I opened it, I expected something very clinical, but I was pleasantly surprised that the top objectives were teaching about different genders and how they may or may not differ from gender assigned at birth. I hope that. I hope that is sex assigned at birth. But that's okay. There was also a section not by the. The submitter, by the way, by the. The information you got from the school. There was also a section on why it is wrong to tease or bully others based on sexual orientation, gender expression or gender identity. This is awesome.
Allison Gill
Nice.
Dana Goldberg
I'm happy that the school is reinforcing what we practice at home. For my pot Pet tax, I've included a picture of our two year old rescue, Ozzy Osbourne, his kitten brother, rj, Short for Ronnie James Dio.
Allison Gill
Oh, nice.
Dana Goldberg
I know who will be a year old in July. I've also included a pick of Ozzy's new waste collection bags which make picking up after him a much more enjoyable experience. Thank you for all you do and being a light in the darkness, literally. The new bags are sort of an orange caricature of Trump and it says bag on it. I hope those are flying off the shelves. Oh, it's amazing.
Allison Gill
And look at the beautiful animals. So good, so cute. That always reminds me. Do you. You know Tony Shalhoub from the show Monk?
Dana Goldberg
Yes.
Allison Gill
He's got a brother who invented a dog poop picking up system where you don't have to bend down, you just sort of hold it under the dog's butt. And because his name was Shalhoub, because he's Tony Shalhoub's brother, the invention was called the Shapoopi.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, that's funny.
Allison Gill
I don't know why that sticks in my head.
Dana Goldberg
I don't either, but.
Allison Gill
But I love Tony Shalhoub. I especially loved him on Nurse Jackie when he played the chief of the ER at the end that had the glioblastoma. Anyway, a lot of pop culture mixed in today. I appreciate you all allowing me to get that off my chest and I appreciate you listening. We're going to be back in your ears tomorrow. We're about to go record Beans Talk.
