News. We're swearing jelly beans. Daily beans. Daily beans. Daily beans.
Allison Gill
Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Thursday, April 9, 2026. Today, Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz after Israeli ceasefire violations. The FCC chair Brendan Karrs threatened CNN after they read a statement given to them by Iran. As expected, Pam Bondi is refusing to comply with her subpoena to be deposed by the House Oversight Committee next week. Wisconsinites have secured a liberal state Supreme Court until at least 2030, while Sean Harris makes massive gains in Marjorie Taylor Greene's old district. A man is in critical condition after another ice shooting in California. The Trump administration is demanding federal workers medical records. A federal judge has reinstated a Harvard scientist's visa. And the California Supreme Court has ordered Sheriff Bianco to pause his investigation into the 2025 Prop 50 special election and preserve the ballots he seized. I'm Alison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Allison Gill
Hey, Dana. Well, that ceasefire sure didn't last long, did it?
Dana Goldberg
No, sure didn't. I think we all have to remember that this is another. They have weapons of mass destruction and they need to open the strait, and they never had a weapon. And the strait was open before we did this invasion. So we're back to square one. And apparently Iran is getting everything they wanted so much that Lindsey Graham is fucking pissed about this. And if you lost Lindsey Graham, I mean, come on, he's got the head so far up Trump's ass, I'm surprised he can even read the classified documents at this point about it.
Allison Gill
Lindsey Graham is such a racist pig. He was super excited about the complete annihilation of the civilization. He was really, I think, really excited about that. In fact, I think that's the only thing Lindsey Graham believes that if John McCain were alive, he'd still be cool with, because John McCain was for this as well, which is one of the reasons I think he lost in 2008amid many, many reasons. But I mean, he was the one going around singing, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran. Remember that whole thing? That was McCain and Lindsey Graham. They were super about this. And so I, Lindsay Graham was like at home with his bubble wand, jerking off, like waiting for the annihilation of Iran and it didn't happen. He's like, damn it. And then, you know, with the concession, no matter what the concession would have been, which by the way, it was awful. You're totally right, Dana. But he still was going to be pissed no matter what because I think
Dana Goldberg
he was looking forward to that I'm
Allison Gill
sure pile of shit. But before we get into all of that stuff, let's talk about some special election wins for the Democrats.
Dana Goldberg
Yes, let's do that. That would make me happy.
Allison Gill
I just. Every time there's a special election now, I'm so excited. It was a big night.
Dana Goldberg
It was. First off, we've got the liberal Chris Taylor, who won a seat on the Wisconsin Supreme Court. This is a big deal. This was a very big deal because there wasn't as many people that it looked like they were voting in this election as they were in the last Supreme Court election in Wisconsin. So Taylor, a state appeals court judge and former Democratic state legislator, secured a 10 year term on the court over conservative Maria Lazarus. Now Taylor's victory is in the race for retiring Justice Rebecca Bradley's seat. It means that liberals are going to have a 5:2 edge on the sween State Supreme Court, putting the majority out of reach for conservatives at least until 2030. Whew.
Desiree McFarlane
Breathe.
Allison Gill
We've had Supreme Court seat races every year, I feel like since 2023. And now it's secured liberal till 2030.
Dana Goldberg
Thank God. Now with most of the expected vote in, Taylor led Lazar by more than 20 points. 20 bets not going to trigger a recount, Everybody. That's a 10 point swing by the way, toward the Democratic backside compared to the 2025 state Supreme Court race. And at 21 point swing from the 2024 presidential contest in Wisconsin. All of these swings, and I'm just going to say this with my tinfoil hat on, I believe there are swings. I believe there are swings, but I also believe the swings aren't as far as we think because I think the last election was stolen. That's all I'm going to say.
Allison Gill
Right? Yeah. Still, these are pretty big point differences. I remember last year we were all into the 2025 Wisconsin State Supreme Court election and we were blown away that the Democrat I Mean, you know, they're unaffiliated. But the Democratic judge had won by 10 points. We're like 10 points. This is 20. Yeah, this is 20. And while Chris Taylor's astonishing 20 point landslide victory was the biggest story statewide for Wisconsin's special election on April 7, one of the biggest results of the night on the local level was Alicia Halvin Slabin. She won the race for mayor in Waukesha. Okay. Which is astounding. She won by 2.5 percentage points. And Halvin Slabin's victory is a stunner. In that open race for mayor, she faced a far more well known candidate in Scott Allen, a Republican who served in the state assembly for more than a decade. He was endorsed by Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow. And while Waukesha has been trending left, it's still a Republican leaning county. The city still broke for Trump by nearly 6 points in 2024. So that's almost a 9 point shift. And they broke for Ron Johnson by 9% in 2022. So the fact that the mayor, that, that Halven Slabin won the mayor by two and a half percentage points in
Dana Goldberg
Waukesha is amazing and more amazing stuff down in Georgia. Now, it's not going to sound like it when I say Republican because, well, duh. But you'll get it. With the Republican. Clay Fuller has won Marjorie Taylor Greene's former U.S. house seat. In Georgia's 14th district, Fuller beat Democrat Sean Harris. Okay. But in the traditionally deep red district that green won by 29 points two years ago, Fuller, who was very much endorsed by Trump, won by just under 12 points. 12 points. It's the most heavily Republican seat in Georgia. And in 2024, President Trump won it by 37 points. Points. That's a 25 point gain. And the reason that's important, it's the heaviest leaning Republican seat. That means all the other seats are less leaning Republican. And there's going to be another fucking swing. I'm telling you, if we can get people out to the vote and out to the polls and if we can get as many people out to vote as possible, this will be a, it'll be a bloodbath. It'll be a bloodbath in the midterms for the Republicans.
Allison Gill
Yeah, I mean, if the biggest ass whooping Democrats take in the deepest counties that are red in Georgia is elect eleven and a half points. Yeah, that's the biggest. When we used to seeing, like you said, 20, 30, 40 points, the Republican wins in those, I mean, I'm Yeah, yeah. Anyway, well done, voters. Well done. Appreciate you all. All right, we have a lot of news to get to. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up from the Associated Press. Iranian Parliament speaker Mohammed Bagheer Galaf said on Wednesday that a ceasefire and negotiations with the United States on ending the war is unreasonable as he accused the US of violating three of Tehran's 10 conditions for an end to the fighting. I have a feeling that us just didn't even read the 10 conditions, I'm sure. And then they saw them and they're like, oh, wait, no, not those three.
Dana Goldberg
He hasn't read the ten Commandments. You think he's going to read the ten conditions?
Allison Gill
Well, I think we should make a law that you have to post Tehran's 10 conditions in all the classrooms around the country.
Dana Goldberg
I think so, too, especially in Tennessee.
Allison Gill
But yeah, he's. So Trump's a accused of violating three of the 10. It comes as the not yet day old ceasefire appears at risk of fraying over significant disagreements between the parties. And I would say, if I were writing this article, I wouldn't say appears at risk of fraying. I'd say it's been totally obliterated. Israel has pushed forward in its war against Hezbollah militant groups in Lebanon, striking dense commercial and residential areas of Beirut without warning, killing at least 112 people and wounding hundreds more. This is after the quote, unquote ceasefire that includes Lebanon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early Wednesday the ceasefire doesn't cover fighting against Hezbollah, contradicting what Pakistan, the deal's broker and other nations had said. Maybe he's trying to split the hairs. Like, oh, I, I said, you know, I would. It didn't specifically say Hezbollah, it just said Lebanon. And I'm, I'm not going after the non Hezbollah, Lebanese. I'm going, you know, whatever the he's trying goes on and hit that head of his. But that contradicts Pakistan's deal that everyone had agreed to. Iran has now closed the Strait of Hormuz in response to the Israeli attacks on Lebanon. And the US Demanded that Iran immediately reopen it. Now, Dana, you and I, three weeks ago on the beans talk, said we need to talk about Lebanon. Nobody is talking about Lebanon and what Bibi Netanyahu is doing in that country. And here we are three weeks later with the US And Israel saying, what do you mean Lebanon? This is not Lebanon. It's spelled out in the deal that Pakistan put forward. Pakistan seeks to get a permanent end to the war and Those talks could begin in Islamabad as soon as Friday. The White House has confirmed that they're sending J.D. vance to lead the delegation after keeping him out of everything, including the Situation Room. When Bibi gave his PowerPoint presentation on why we should go to war in the first place, and remember, Iran was saying, we're not talking to Wyckoff, we're not talking to Kushner, we're not talking to Trump. We will only talk to JD Vance. So this also seems like a concession. Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries said they're going to demand passage of a resolution to halt further US Military action in Iran during Thursday's session, seeking to force Republicans who've been largely silent on Trump's strategy, to speak up. I wish he would also call for impeachment and removal like a hundred other Democrats have called for. But they're sticking with the War Powers Resolution, which I don't think Trump is going to follow if it is passed. But whatever he said in a letter, Hakeem Jeffrey said to a letter in his colleagues, Democrats will, quote, unleash maximum pressure on Republicans to put patriotic duty over party loyalty and join the Democrats in stopping the madness. Again, I don't think a war powers resolution is going to stop the madness. The Pentagon, like you talked about yesterday, Dana, is a devising ways to get around war crimes by saying we're targeting energy plants that help power military bases
Dana Goldberg
or whatever, even though they power like five girl schools that are connected to them.
Allison Gill
It's just the only way to stop the madness is to get him out of office. That's. I know don't have the majority, but lead on it. You know, we didn't have the votes when we started demanding marriage equality.
Dana Goldberg
True.
Allison Gill
Until we did. I don't understand. You're the leader. Lead anyway. Congress is on recess, but the House and Senate are meeting for perfunctory sessions on Thursday. That's today. And in a related story from the Independent, Trump fired off a seething threat against CNN Tuesday night in response to its reporting from Iran, claiming that Iran had won a great victory over the US following the president's announcement to deleg delay his ceasefire deadline by two weeks. Following the announcement, CNN published a post to its online live blog detailing the Iranian response. Quote, iran says it's achieved a great victory and forced the United States to accept its 10 point plan, according to statements from Iran's Supreme National Security Council report by Iranian state media. That's what CNN said and that is 100% true. Trump lashed out on truth, social Threatening to investigate CNN for crimes and accusing the outlet of knowingly publishing incorrect statements. FCC head Brendan Carr then said in a social media post that it was time for a change. CNN. Carr has faced backlash, as we know, after threatening the broadcasters licenses over Iran war coverage. Cable news networks such as CNN are not licensed and don't fall under Carr's crusade. So it's really odd. In response to Carr's tweet, CNN released its own statement. Quote, the statement in question was obtained by CNN from Iranian officials and reported on multiple Iranian state media outlets. We received a statement from a specific Iranian spokesperson and people who are known to us. That's what the statement said. By the way, the statement CNN put out. Because I was like, what is the statement? Everyone's talking about the statement. It's really, really long, this Iranian statement. But here's some choice parts of it. Malignant global zionism had convinced the ignorant US President that this war would finish Iran and that by eliminating this last bastion of humanity they could thereafter commit any crime against anyone with ease. And here's another part. Iran has achieved a great victory and forced the criminal United States to accept its 10 point plan. In this plan, the US has in principle committed to non aggression, the continuation of Iran's control over the Strait of Hormuz, acceptance of enrichment, the lifting of all primary and secondary sanctions, the termination of all United Nations Security Council and Board of Governors resolutions, compensation to Iran, the withdrawal of US combat forces in the region and the cessation of war on all fronts, including against the heroic Islamic resistance in Lebanon. Okay, just.
Dana Goldberg
That sounds like we lost a war.
Allison Gill
That sounds like a surrender.
Dana Goldberg
It does. Okay. I just making sure I understood. All right, we are shifting a little bit. This is from Politico. House Republicans indicated Wednesday that they're going to continue to seek sworn testimony from Pam Bondi on the Justice Department's handling of Jeffrey Epstein case even after her ousting as Attorney General. The House Oversight Committee subpoenaed Bondi for an April 14 deposition, but the date was never confirmed by Bondi. And the panel said in a statement that it will continue to seek a date for her testimony. And I quote, the Department of Justice has stated Pam Bondi will not appear on April 14 for a deposition since she is no longer Attorney General and was subpoenaed in her capacity as Attorney General. I hate these people so much.
Allison Gill
Yeah.
Dana Goldberg
Now it went on to say the committee will contact Pam Bondi's personal counsel to discuss next steps regarding scheduling her deposition. The committee's statement came after the Justice Department, in a letter to Comer obtained by Politico, appeared to request that Bondi be excused from testifying. Given her departure from the Department of Justice, it said. We kindly ask that you confirm that the subpoena is withdrawn, wrote Assistant Attorney General Patrick Davis, adding that the Department of Justice continues to believe that additional compulsory process is unnecessary in light of our demonstrated willingness to voluntarily assist her oversight efforts. Fuck off oversight. Democrats argue that despite her departure from the Justice Department, Bondi must still answer lawmakers questions. A committee spokesperson said last week that Comer would confer with his Republican members and the Justice Department about next steps. We knew this was going to happen. We, I mean I knew it was going to happen. I don't know what they can do at this point to compel her to testify. But now that she's just a normal quote unquote US Citizen and she's subpoenaed, she's not really supposed to be protected by the Justice Department as if she was if she was the attorney general. So we'll see what happens.
Allison Gill
Yeah, but this is House Republicans saying they want to continue to seek sworn testimony. I hope it's true and maybe they have the votes to hold her in contempt. Not that if they refer it to the doj, Todd Blanche is going to
Dana Goldberg
do anything or apparently the Supreme Court,
Allison Gill
at least he served his time. Right. I doubt that anything's going to happen. But the next attorney General, Jack Smith, please be Jack Smith. Please be Jack Smith could actually bring this unless of course Trump pardons everybody on his way out. But in that case, I would like to see Jack Smith challenge those pardons in court as corrupt. But maybe I'm getting it.
Dana Goldberg
I also have to wonder and maybe I'm wrong on this but couldn't I mean I don't know if this would ever happen because it's Florida. But the state of Florida could still like if Pam Bonnie was involved in any of these crimes in the state of Florida is you know what I mean? Is there a possibility it could be a state's crime instead of federal crime?
Allison Gill
Well she like lying and not showing up to Congress and being attempt to Congress would be those are all crime in D.C. well it would even if it were local it would still be D.C. d.C. Only has the federal system. Yeah. Yep. All right, from the Post. A man has been hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday after ICE fired at him during a targeted vehicle stop in Patterson, California. That's according to federal and local authorities. The officers were seeking to arrest Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez when the shooting occurred, acting ICE Director Todd Lyons lied in a statement. The statement described Mendoza Hernandez as an undocumented immigrant. Lyons said Mendoza Hernandez was a gang member wanted in El Salvador for questioning in a murder investigation, but did not provide any evidence to back up that allegation. Lyons said Mendoza Hernandez, quote, weaponized his vehicle in an attempt to run over an officer. Have we heard that before anywhere?
Dana Goldberg
Yes, I think I have.
Allison Gill
And that prompted officers to fire defensive shots to protect themselves and their fellow agents and the public. I have seen the video. It's out there on social media. He does not do that. He doesn't do that at all. The officer.
Dana Goldberg
Not surprised. Not surprised.
Allison Gill
It's lies. The incident follows months of mounting scrutiny over ICE tactics and other federal immigration personnel, including the fatal shooting of two US Citizens in Minneapolis in January. In more than a dozen shootings by federal officers since last summer, the Trump administration has accused those who were shot of being the aggressors, saying many used their vehicles to try to ram into and injure federal officers. And all of it has been disproved by video, just like this one will be. However, in several instances, the video footage and other evidence have contradicted the government's accounts. In some cases, federal prosecutors have dropped the charges against those who were shot, or a judge has dismissed them, or a jury has acquitted them. But don't worry, Jeanine Pirro will take a guilty verdict. She'll take a no true, Bill, because she's gonna bring all the crimes. Thank you. So, anyway, we'll see what ends up happening with this. But it's yet another shooting where ICE has lied to the public, and it's. I mean, just throw it on the pile. So many of them.
Dana Goldberg
And that's what's happening right now is they flooded the zone again with this war and everything else that ICE is out there committing unconstitutional crimes. And where you're not seeing a lot of these now in the news, because the news has been taken over by. They know what they're doing. You can only focus on so many things at once if you're the mainstream media right now, unfortunately, and they're focusing on all the wrong stuff.
Allison Gill
Yeah, that's why we love that you listen to the daily beans, because indeed, we'll bring these stories for you.
Dana Goldberg
And speaking of stories, here's another one from cbs. The Trump administration is quietly seeking unprecedented access to medical records for millions of federal workers and retirees and their families.
Allison Gill
Nope. Nope.
Dana Goldberg
I know.
Allison Gill
Nope.
Dana Goldberg
A brief note from the Office of Personnel Management could dramatically change which personally identifiable medical information the agency obtains, giving it the power to see prescriptions employees had filled or what treatment they sought from doctors. The regulation would require 65 insurance companies that cover more than 8 million Americans, including federal workers, retired members of Congress, mail carriers, their immediate family members to provide monthly reports to OPM with identifiable health data on their members. The proposal is prompting unease, of course, from insurers as well as health policy and legal experts who are concerned about the legality of OPM acquiring such a sweeping database of sensitive health information and the agency's ability to safeguard it. Among concerns how the administration might use information about employees who have sought abortions. 41 states, by the way, have some type of abortion ban or transgender treatment medical care that the Trump administration has tried to curb. OPM argues in its notice that it is entitled to the information from insurers for oversight activities. No, you're not. But several people who reviewed the Notice questioned whether OPM's explanation for requesting the information is even sufficient. And I quote, the language in it seems quite broad and encompasses potentially a lot of information and data and a sort of light on justification. This is from Jody Daniel, a digital health strategist who helped develop the legal framework for hipaa, the privacy rules, over two decades ago.
Allison Gill
I know the government wants to know what medications you're on and what you've been diagnosed with and what, what's you're being treated for. I wonder why they could possibly want that information. I'm sure it's just totally innocent stuff.
Dana Goldberg
Makes me sick.
Allison Gill
All right, let's switch. We need some good news. A federal judge in Vermont ruled that Harvard scientist Cenia Petrova, her visa was unlawfully cancelled by the Trump administration after she was detained at an airport over those frog embryos, remember biological samples she was carrying, handing her a key legal victory in a case that has raised questions about the limits of government power at the border. In a decision issued Tuesday, the court said the undisputed facts reveal that Ms. Petrova's visa was impermissibly canceled. Petrova, a Russian born researcher at Harvard University's Kirschner Lab, has argued for more than a year that the cancellation was unlawful. She was stopped at Boston Logan last February after returning from Paris. Her visa was canceled. She was placed into immigration proceedings and detention. This disrupted her groundbreaking work on advanced imaging technology that has the potential to transform cancer diagnostics, according to fellow researchers. And she's the only one who knew how to do it. While this ruling allows Petrova to remain in The US for now, her legal battles are not over, though. She's still facing separate criminal charges stemming from trying to transport frog embryos, and she has a trial scheduled for later this year.
Dana Goldberg
All right. And from ABC7 in Sacramento, the California Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a county sheriff who seized more than a half a million 2025 election ballots to pause his probe into election fraud allegations while the judges reviewed the legal challenge against it. The order came after California Attorney General Rob Bonta, a Democrat, last month asked the court to step in. A voting rights group is also challenging the ballot seizure. The dispute started in February. It escalated last month when Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco seized a thousand boxes of election materials to investigate a complaint from a local citizens group about the ballot count from a November 2025 special election on redistricting. Local election officials told the County Board of Supervisors last month that the complaint was unfounded. After Banta ordered Bianco to halt his probe, the Sheriff seized another 426 boxes of ballots last week. Bata said the Wednesday order is essential to stop the sheriff's probe. He said what the sheriff says and what he does are often two different things. This is from Bonta. Today's decision by the California Supreme Court reigns in the destabilizing actions of a rogue sheriff, prohibiting him from continuing this investigation while our litigation continues. Bianco's office, of course, did not respond to a quest for comment. Bianco also is one of two prominent Republican gubernatorial candidates in the state.
Allison Gill
Ah.
Dana Goldberg
He previously defended his investigation, noting it was approved by a county judge. The sheriff last week said he paused the probe because of mounting legal challenges. I'm sure he did.
Allison Gill
Yeah. That's why you did it. Look, Sheriff. White guy. Here's the thing. These are Prop 50 ballots, right?
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Allison Gill
And he apparently gave a presentation recently, according to somebody who sent me some information about it. Dana. And what he's trying to do is he's trying to prove that the number of people who voted that day is different from the total number of ballots counted and that that somehow constitutes fraud. The only trouble is he's taking the number of votes tallied by the vote counting machine and that is less than the total number of votes because of provisional ballots and same day registration ballots. Ah, so he's not counting those. He's just taking the number counted by the machine and saying the total number of votes doesn't match. Look, it's voter fraud. So he's just full of shit. So I'm glad the judge paused it all. Right, Got it. We have good news that we need to get to, but we have to take a quick break. Stick around. We'll be right back after these messages.
Dana Goldberg
We'll be right back.
Allison Gill

Filming the way on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela was one of the most important and rewarding experiences of my life. And it was by far the most satisfying role of my career. The Way was filmed in 2009 over an eight week schedule and followed the pilgrimage route from St Jean Pierre de Port in the French pyramid Pyrenees, across northern Spain to Santiago and then on to Mushia for the final scene. And the entire production was a family affair. Those are the opening lines of a story I share and they reflect the very heart of my podcast. And through sharing autobiographical stories and inspired poetry and personal reflections, that is the theme I find myself exploring again and again. But I do so in the hope that it sparks listeners to see how it relates to their own lives and their own story of discovery. So please join me each Sunday for a beautifully crafted 20 minute journey of personal exploration. I'm proud to announce the Martin Sheen Podcast Season two. I've often said if it's not personal, it's impersonal. And that is how I choose to approach my podcast. With all its contents from storytelling to poetry and book selections. Each unique episode is a journey we will share together. And I think it's important you know that I have no intention of leaving who I am at the door with this podcast. Anyone who knows me knows I cannot tell a personal story that doesn't have at least some social justice connection at its core. I have my convictions and issues that draw on my empathy and compassion. Frankly, that's what drives and informs my conscience and makes me who I am. How could I bring any less to this endeavor? It can be a shame. A shout out to a loved one or yourself. We love self shout outs. It can be a shout out to a non profit. You want us to know about some great work that some of our great non profits are doing. A small business in your area that could use a boost. Maybe an event that's happening close to you that you want everyone to to be aware of. It could be a shout out to a government program that's helped you or a loved one. It can be a good trouble suggestion for a Good trouble segment, anything@all dailybeanspod.com click on contact and all you got to do to get your stuff read on the air is submit your pod pet tax, which is just attach a photo. Anything really. It can be. It can be you. It can be your baby picture. It can be some funny joke you saw on the Internet. It can be your pet. This is how it all started was podcast. You can actually submit your pet.
Dana Goldberg
Now look where we are.
Allison Gill
Yes, now look where we are. It can be an adoptable pet in your area, a random photo of an animal on the Internet. Anything at all. Send it to us dailybeanspod.com and click on contact. First up is your good trouble. Good Trouble today comes from M Pronouns they and them.
Dana Goldberg
Hey y'.
Allison Gill
All. Send in some good trouble from South Carolina. Midlands Gives is a platform which raises money and awareness through a leaderboard competition in April. Unfortunately, most years an anti abortion organization called A Moment of Hope is one of the top raisers. They use that money to harass people outside of Planned Parenthoods and just last year their founder shot someone outside of a clinic. This year a pro reproductive rights organization called Palmetto State Abortion Fund is attempting to raise more than this harmful group in order to help people access abortion care and afford associated costs as well as to be a little petty. They've just unlocked a $25,000 match and they are number two on the leaderboard behind A Moment of Hope so they have a real chance of making that happen. We have until May 5th to show our support. We're going to have a link in the show notes to give and I think that's such a great idea. And the leaderboards, we're going to have a link to that as well. And producers note, since 2014, Midlands Gives has raised more than $32 million for hundreds of local non profits. For my pod pet tariff, I offered a decade old chocolate cake recipe from my grandma who grew up in the middle of nowhere, Georgia. So y' all know it's delicious. As well as my sweet boy Sam who crossed the rainbow bridge a few years back but is always with me in my heart. Look at this recipe. Okay.
Dana Goldberg
The fact that we've never asked people to submit submit their favorite recipes for different things, we had to find it a name for the game.
Allison Gill
But yeah, how have we gotten this far? Five years in six years almost.
Dana Goldberg
Who doesn't want a recipe for grandma's chocolate cake. I mean, come on.
Allison Gill
I know. Okay. Look at the dog.
Dana Goldberg
Look at the standard poodle.
Allison Gill
Oh, my goodness sakes. Thank you for that good trouble, Em. Really appreciate it.
Dana Goldberg
I also love that the producer decided if we can't read the handwriting on this piece of paper that's clearly almost probably 100 years old. It's probably not a hundred, but a lot. We have given you the recipe in type.
Allison Gill
Oh, my gosh. Somebody. Our producers are the best.
Dana Goldberg
I love it. I love it. All right, we've got from Eli Lionheart, pronouns he, they, good morning, my navy bean, and comedic cannellini. That's so cute.
Allison Gill
I'm a navy bean.
Dana Goldberg
I'm a comedic cannellini. All right, I want to shout out a local business, Firestorm Coupe. We're going to have a link for that, which is just Firestorm Coop. And it's an incredible feminist queer bookstore, an invaluable resource in western North Carolina. They serve as an anchor point and community space for a vast swath of southeast queers, queer youth, and leftists where so many other community spaces have not been able to survive the last several years. I could rhapsodize what a great word about them for pages and pages, but one of my favorite examples of their incredible activism was banned books back. We're gonna have a link to that. I will let their own description stand. And here it is. The universe works in mysterious ways. And on a chilly day in November, our little anarchist bookshop found itself in possession of 22,500 children's books pulled from schools in Duval County, Florida, by small minded book banners. With heavy hearts for the kids who might never get to read these stories, we committed ourselves to getting them into the hands of young folks. In early 2024, we're sending banned books back. There's a direct connection between the books that are being banned in the escalation of violent or even deadly assaults on the people whose lives are reflected on those pages. Finding good homes for these books, some 45 different titles exploring topics ranging from racism, colonialism, to radical history. And visionary organizing is one of the many ways to defend kids and fight for a far better world. They took donations and organized volunteer labor to ship bundles of banned books back to any Florida family who requested them. By the way, there was more than 2,000 recipients. Find a better example of good trouble. I'll wait. In any case, since Hurricane Helene, where they were a vital nucleus for self direction, community organization and resource distribution, they have been struggling and looking for some help. Just Help if you can. My pet pick will have to be their bookstore hound, Julius Caesar Salad.
Allison Gill
Oh, he's got little red paws.
Dana Goldberg
He says I was caught red handed.
Allison Gill
Oh, my goodness. Yeah, because he stepped in the paint. Look at that.
Dana Goldberg
Oh, cute.
Allison Gill
Julius Caesar Salad. Thank you so much for that, Eli. I love that. Oh, there's another Julius Caesar salad. No Kings except Julius Caesar Salad. Next up from Len, pronouns he and him. Good morning, A.G. and D.G. i love the smell of last night's tacos in the morning. More seriously, perhaps we should not call making the right decision, even for the wrong reasons, chickening out. Here's my good news for those who worry about the next generation. I was delighted during the no Kings march in Oak Park, Illinois, when my adult daughter surprised me. And then she told me that when she reached reached the end of the march, she and her friends decided to jump on the L and go down to Grant park in time for the speeches. I'm attaching a pic of me with her and one of a recent encounter with a despised vehicle in a parking lot.
Dana Goldberg
I haven't even scrolled and I can guess what it is.
Allison Gill
Yes, I already know. Thanks to your whole team. For all you do, here's the sign. I need to be able to tell my grandchildren I did not stay silent.
Dana Goldberg
So good.
Allison Gill
And there's a bird photo. Bird watching with a cyber truck. I love it.
Dana Goldberg
Love it. All right, this is from Little Blue Dot in rural Georgia. AG and DG sharing some good news from last week's vacation in Scotland. What a beautiful country and people so full of history and hospitality. In the immortal words of Liz Lemon, I want to go to there again. We spent the week in Edinburgh, Fort William, Inverness, Isle of Skye, and Glasgow. But Edinburgh was my favorite, by the way. My favorite, too. Little Blue Dot. One famous spot is the Greyfriars Bobby Statue. Statue. Bobby was a sky terrier who guarded his owner's grave for 14 years. After the owner's death, there's a memorial to Bobby in the Greyfriars Kirkyard, which is the cemetery. And people bring sticks and set them on the foot of his memorial. Bobby's a symbol of loyalty and devotion to the Scots with a heart. There's also a statue, former fountain of Bobby, near the Grayfriars Kirkyard. We passed in several times, but one day I saw a special rock that had been placed at the statue.
Allison Gill
Check it out.
Dana Goldberg
Out. Despite being completely disconnected from the news, that, too, was magical. It made me happy knowing the fight against fascism is alive and well in the UK Bless you both for being sane voices in an insane world and using your talent for good.
Allison Gill
And the Rock says resist fascists. I love it. Love it. Oh, resist fascism. Oh that's so great.
Dana Goldberg
So good.
Allison Gill
I love that. What a cool statue. Oh, thanks so much. Little blue dot in Royal, Georgia Next up from Rich Pronouns he and him Hi ladies. First time long time. Been listening since Mueller. She wrote. I'm writing with a shout out to my wife who turns the big four zero today. After many years of secondhand legumination from me, she started listening to your podcasts on her own. So I'm hoping to surprise her with this birthday shout out. During the pandemic, she took a chance on herself and took a job baking at a local coffee shop that had just opened up while pregnant with our daughter. Since that time, through her incredible work ethic and determination, she's been offered the opportunity to buy into the business and become a co owner. The Coffee Spot that's the name of the place is a thriving LGBTQ friendly shop located inside a cute Victorian style house in the heart of our small town in Connecticut. I'm so proud of what my wife has accomplished so far and I can't wait to see what the future has in store for her as she enters her fourth decade. Attached are pictures of our fur babies. Kiki the dark one, Ollie the Orange Gray and Buddha. An or cat in every sense of the word and everyone who's not familiar that means one or none brain cells, and our now four year old daughter who loves playing baker just like her mama. Thanks for all you ladies do. You've been the voice of my morning commute for the last several years and I'm thankful for all the info and insight you bring each day. And if you ever find yourself in Connecticut, give the coffee spot a try. Rich. I definitely will.
Dana Goldberg
Same. I love finding new coffee spots.
Allison Gill
Happy Birthday to your wife. Happy 40th birthday. Look at these fur babies and look at this beautiful child. Oh my goodness.
Dana Goldberg
So sweet. All right, this is from Becky Pronouns she and her hello Beanie Queens. I wanted to send a shout out to my bestie whose birthday is April 9th. Guess what? Happy birthday bestie. As someone who is 10 years ahead of me in life, she's not only been a great friend but Sherpa into what aging as a woman looks like and things your mom's your mom doesn't tell you. Like many things, she turned me on to the podcast and even though we are living seven states apart now, we see each other regularly. I'm so thankful for her. For my pet tariff, my pod pet tariff. I present Lucifer my blank, which is a fancy name for a blank. Sending a fancy show pic as well as one with personality. Thanks for all you do in keeping us sane. Keep up the good, good work.
Allison Gill
Oh that fancy show pick is very fancy. Is this one of those white German shepherds I didn't know about it?
Dana Goldberg
Looks like it.
Allison Gill
Let's see.
Dana Goldberg
Wow. Wow.
Allison Gill
Oh, Burger Blanc Suisse, which is a fancy name for a white Swiss shepherd. Not German. Excuse me, so sorry. Okay, white Swiss shepherd. Very beautiful.
Dana Goldberg
Gorgeous dog. Looks like a wolf. A white wolf.
Allison Gill
Yes. Thanks Becky. Next up, Judy Pronoun she and her Here's a picture of me last year in New York City flipping the bird to Trump Tower. Days before the inauguration. My daughter goes there for work and I got to tag along and spend a week sightseeing with my sister in law and daughter. When she wasn't working we stayed two blocks from the Empire State Building and walked so much every day. I can attest to that. Whenever I'm in New York I walk so much.
Dana Goldberg
And one of my favorite things about the city city.
Allison Gill
It's so walkable. Saw a Broadway show, Chicago as well. I had never been there in my 70 years. Wow. Family, work and travel are what is keeping me sane in these insane times. Same same Judy. Four grandkids with a fifth on the way for this non retired OB nursing professor are what I'm fighting for. Look at this great bird watching photo of Trump Tower and no war no save act. Release all the Epstein files. Great sign.
Dana Goldberg
