MSW Media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Tuesday, June 10, 2025. Today, Pete Hegseth has mobilized the United States Marine Corps against American citizens in Los Angeles County. Attorney General Bonta is suing the Trump administration seeking an injunction of National Guard deployment. ABC has suspended Terry Morant for a tweet calling Stephen Miller a world class hater. A former Afghan soldier was arrested by ICE in Houston and stripped of his asylum protections. Pam Bondi's brother gets trounced in the D.C. bar association election. Israeli forces have detained Greta Thunberg after halting the Freedom Flotilla boat carrying aid and supplies for Gaza. National Institutes of Health employees have published the Bethesda declaration in dissent of Trump's cuts. And RFK Jr. Has ousted the entire CDC Vaccination Advisory Committee. I'm Alison Gill.
Dana Goldberg
And I'm Dana Goldberg. You know, I'm doing okay. All this stuff that's going on in la. I just really want people to understand how massive Los Angeles county is and that these protests are happening in a very small little quadrant of downtown. And saw the bullshit you're seeing on the national news that LA's lost control and Bass and Newsom have lost control of the city. They have not. This is all a ploy so that Trump can see how far the people are going to let him push and his unconstitutionality.
Alison Gill
Yeah. And so far we are now have 700 Marines on the way. Yeah, but not about the Marines.
Dana Goldberg
No, about the National Guard.
Alison Gill
At least not yet. Unless he amends that lawsuit. But we'll talk about that because you know the National Guard deployment is unlawful.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Alison Gill
But there's another lawsuit that hit the docket today from California. Banta is suing the Trump administration for unlawful educational funding cuts to our state for allowing transgender students to play sports. So I'm glad that they're suing on that as well. And we'll keep an eye. I will keep an eye on that lawsuit for you. And this is the kind of stuff like all of that money that you raised for Lambda Legal. These are the kinds of suits that that kind of fundraising supports. So thank you, my friend, for all of your work.
Dana Goldberg
Pleasure. My pleasure.
Alison Gill
All right, we have a lot of news to get to everybody. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up from CBS News, the military has put 700 marines on high alert to possibly deploy to Los Angeles. That's according to three U.S. officials who spoke to CBS News two days after Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth said they could be sent to the city, quote, if violence continues. And by the way, the only violence that's happening on the ground is from law enforcement. The Marines could be mobilized in the coming days. They're actually. We just got an update. They're on their way now, Monday afternoon to support National Guard troops already in the city. And there are photos of National Guard troops sleeping in parking garages, much like they did when Trump called up a bunch of national guard troops to D.C. during the George, the peaceful George Floyd protests. And they don't have water, they don't have supplies, they don't have food. It's despicable the way he's treating these Marines. Hegseth said Saturday night he had placed the Marines on high alert. And this is from the Washington Post. California, like you said, Dana, is suing the Trump administration. They filed that lawsuit Monday over its order to deploy 2000 California National Guard troops to Los Angeles without the governor's consent, a move with little precedent that has dramatically increased tensions between the federal government and the Democratic led state, by the way, the most populous state in the United States. The lawsuit argues that Trump overstepped his authority when he called the National Guard in defiance of California Governor Gavin Newsom, invoking a law that allows the president to do so under threat from a foreign invasion or rebellion against the United States government. Quote, let me be clear. There is no invasion, there is no rebellion. That's what California Attorney General Rob Bonta said in a statement and went on to say, the president is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends, just like you said, Dana. And this is terrifying.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, it really is. It's bullshit. I think this is a distraction from, you know, Musk leaving the administration. I think he's trying to push to see how far he can get away with this. And I think he's also trying to send Gavin Newsom some sort of a message of like, obey me or else. And Newsom's telling him to go fuck himself, which is what we want to see.
Alison Gill
And Trump said if he were Tom Homan, he would arrest Gavin Newsom. And Gavin Newsom put out a video saying, come at me, bro. Come get me.
Dana Goldberg
I think it was. Who was it? Maxine Waters was like, if you're going to shoot, you better have good aim. Basically, you only get one shot. So I just can't. Anyway, we're going to go to Houston. This is from the Houston public media. A former Afghan national army soldier in the process of applying for asylum in the US Was arrested last month by federal immigration agents at his Houston area home. That's according to his attorney who said the man and most of his family are being threatened with deportation. Quote, he has eight kids. Two of those kids were born in the United States during the last four years. This is what immigration attorney Ali Zakaria said, who declined to provide his client's name, citing safety concerns. He was brought to the US by the United States Armed Forces in 2021 when the Taliban took over Afghanistan. He had previously been employed as part of what's called the Kandahar Strike Force, which I believe is part of the Afghan armed forces. And his job was to basically guard a base where Americans and Afghan soldiers worked. Now, Zakaria said his client's application for asylum should have protected him, but added the U.S. immigration and Customs Enforcement, otherwise known as ICE agents, disregarded it. And I quote, he does not have a criminal record. He has not been charged with any crimes. He has never been arrested in the United States before. This is what Zakaria said. And that is the lawyer. He was just seized and taken away. He tried to explain that he had proper parole status and he entered the United States and that that parole still valid till the end of the year, almost to the end of the year. But the ICE officer said, we have canceled everything. You're out of status. They don't have the fucking authority to do that, by the way. And the charging document that has been filed with the court simply says that he's in the United States without any status. Zakaria said ISIS willingness to seize people who are in the asylum application process means that at least a thousand Afghans in the Houston area are at risk of sharing the same fate as well as up to upwards of 20,000 Afghans nationwide.
Alison Gill
Yeah, and this is very upsetting to a lot of veterans who whose lives were saved by these 100%. This is from the Associated Press. A Gaza bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists arrived at an Israeli port on Monday after Israeli forces stopped and detained them, enforcing a long standing blockade of the Palestinian territory that has been tightened during the Israel Hamas war. The boat, accompanied by Israel's navy, arrived in Ashdod in the evening. And that's according to Israel's Foreign Ministry. It published a photo on social media of Thunberg after disembarking. The 12 activists were undergoing medical checks to ensure they're in good health. They were expected to be held at a detention facility in Raml. Am I saying that right before being deported? That's according to Adala, a legal rights group representing them. The activists had set out to protest Israel's military campaign in Gaza, which is among the deadliest and most destructive since World War II, and its restrictions on the entry of humanitarian aid. Both have put the territory of around 2 million Palestinians at risk of famine. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, which organized the voyage, said the activists were kidnapped by Israeli forces while trying to deliver desperately needed aid. Quote, the ship was unlawfully boarded, its unarmed civilian crew were abducted and its life saving cargo, including baby formula, food and medical supplies were confiscated. That's what it said in a statement.
Dana Goldberg
All right, Allison, thank you. This one is also from the Associated press. Health Secretary RFK Jr. On Monday removed every single member of the scientific committee that advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and how to use vaccines and pledged to replace them with his own picks. I don't know if an R is missing from that word, but it might be. The 17 member advisory committee on Immunization Practices had been in a state of flux since Kennedy took over. Its first meeting this year had been delayed when the U.S. department of Health and Human Services has abruptly postponed its February meeting. Kennedy, who was one of the nation's leading anti vaccine activists, even though we are pretty sure he vaccinated his own kids before becoming the nation's top health official, recently took the unusual step of changing COVID 19 recommendations without first consulting the panel. And the panel would probably be doctors.
Alison Gill
Yeah. And they pushed back and kept COVID 19 on the vaccine recommendation schedules. And so now he's fired all 17 of them.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. Mm.
Alison Gill
Next up from the Times, ABC News suspended the network correspondent Terry Moran on Sunday after he wrote on social media that Stephen Miller, the deputy White House chief of staff, was, quote, a man who is richly endowed with the capacity for hatred and called him a world class hater. Mr. Moran made the comments in a late night post on Twitter in which he also referred to Trump as a world class hater. The post was later deleted, but screenshots circulated on social media and drew quick rebuke from Trump allies, including J.D. vance, who called Mr. Moran's post absolutely a vile smear and said that he was the king of hatred. So it's so an ABC correspondent can't say Stephen Miller's full of hatred, but the Vice President can say Terry Moran is full of hatred.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. It's ridiculous.
Alison Gill
Yeah. And an ABC News spokeswoman said on Sunday that Mr. Moran has been suspended pending further evaluation. Here's a quote, ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality. I'm sorry, but Calling Stephen Miller full of hate is objective and impartial.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. Facts are facts.
Alison Gill
It goes on to say we're impartial in our news coverage and we don't condone subjective personal attacks on others. That's what the network said in a statement. Unless you're Trump attacking us and then we give you $16 million. Which she didn't say that.
Dana Goldberg
Seriously.
Alison Gill
I put that in there. The Post does not reflect the views of ABC News and it violated our standards. And if ABC News doesn't think Stephen Miller is a hate monger, the ABC News has an objectivity problem.
Dana Goldberg
There you go.
Alison Gill
Because late last year, as we know, ABC News, owned by Disney, agreed to pay $16 million to settle a defamation lawsuit that Trump filed against their network. Over on air comments by George Stephanopoulos. Those on air comments or that Trump is a rapist.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah. Which he was adjudicated as such.
Alison Gill
Yeah. And the judge even said it's right to say that.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah.
Alison Gill
Anyway, thanks for listening to the Daily Beans and not ABC News.
Dana Goldberg
That's okay. I'm going to end with a palate cleanser. Oh, good. Thank you.
Alison Gill
We need some good news.
Dana Goldberg
You got it. There's a little good news from npr. Employment attorney Diane Seltzer. She has won a closely watched contest to lead the D.C. bar Association. And who did she defeat? Securities lawyer Brad Bondi. Sound familiar? Yeah, it's Pam's bro. In a race with record turnout, sells her brat, PAM Bondi's brother, 91% to 90%.
Alison Gill
Oh, I'm sorry. I made a typo.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, I was like. I thought brat was like a new, like, Gen Z word.
Alison Gill
Was like, she brat that election.
Dana Goldberg
She bratted that. Yo, listen, people. Sometimes I just read what's in front of me. What the hell is the word supposed to be? Al she beat. Okay, there you go. We're not even going to edit that. You're welcome, everybody. Seltzer beat Pam Bondi's brother 91% to 9. That's not a typo. 91% to 9%. With no issues or irregularities in the voting system. This is on the D.C. bar. CEO, Bob. Here we go. This is a fun one. Spagnoletti. No, Spagnoletti. Spagnoletti said in a press call Monday now, more than 38,000 people voted in that race. More than five times as many votes in a typical election. They really did not want him anywhere near the Judiciary.
Alison Gill
They averaged 7,400, 7,500 votes.
Dana Goldberg
That's amazing. And no irregularities. I can't even say the word that's impressive.
Alison Gill
38,000 people voted. Now, we here at MSW Media endorsed Diane Seltzer. We're not lawyers, but we did 91 to 9.
Dana Goldberg
That's boom, man.
Alison Gill
Thank you for that. I needed that. A moose boosh. I really did.
Dana Goldberg
You're welcome.
Alison Gill
She totally bratted him in that.
Dana Goldberg
Totally bratted him.
Alison Gill
All right, everybody, it's time for some good trouble.
Dana Goldberg
What are you guys doing?
Alison Gill
In October 2020, two months before COVID 19 vaccines would become available, Stanford health policy professor Dr. J. Bhattacharya and two colleagues published an open letter calling for a contrarian approach to managing the risks of the pandemic. Protecting the most vulnerable while allowing others largely to resume normal life. Aiming to obtain herd immunity through infection with the virus, they called it the Great Barrington Declaration. For the Massachusetts town where they signed it, backlash was so swift. It was so swift, the Director general of the World Health Organization called the idea of allowing a dangerous new virus to sweep through unprotected populations unethical. Batacharya later testified before Congress that it and he immediately became targets of suppression and censorship by those leading scientific agencies, scientists and doctors and people who are smart don't like me.
Dana Goldberg
Okay, so Bach. Yeah. Bhattachary is the one in charge, but. And staffers at the agency he leads, the US National Institutes of Health, they publish their own letter of dissent, taking issue with what they see as the, you know, politicization of research, research and destruction of the scientific progress under the Trump administration. They called it the Bethesda. Wow, I'm getting tongue tied. The Bethesda Declaration for the location of the NIH. Okay, now. The letter was signed by more than 300 employees across the Biomedical Research Agency. And that's according to the nonprofit organization Stand up for Science, which also posted it. While many employees signed anonymously because of fear of retaliation, nearly 100, from graduate students to division chiefs, they signed by name.
Alison Gill
Mm. Now here's where the good trouble comes in. Those who wrote the Bethesda Declaration were joined Monday by outside supporters in a second letter posted by Stand up for Science and signed by members of the public, including more than a dozen Nobel Prize winning scientists. You can add your name in support right now. To stand united with the courageous and selfless public servants who are committed to their duty to the American people and the mission of the National Institutes of Health, including fruitful partnership with academia. Together, we stand up for science. The link to add your name is in the show notes. There are currently about 5,000 signatories and I know we can boost that number. So again, click the link in the show notes. Add your name to this letter to stand up for science. We'll be right back with the good news after these messages. We'll be right back. Hey, everybody. First up from an anonymous Canuck. Hi, Beans, ladies. Just listening to your conversation with Jenna Friedman and wanted to point out that most major Canadian airports have American border and customs agents posted. You pre clear American immigration at the airport. As you're leaving Canada on a flight to a U.S. destination, Canadian citizens are experiencing the same questions and people are wondering why we don't want to travel to the US Yeah. Anonymous Canuck, A family friend just flew in from I think Vancouver. The entire customs flights to the United States. Empty. Like, nobody on the planes, nobody in line at customs. It's usually really busy. It's empty as podpet tax. Here's a photo of my two adopted kitties, brother and sister, Ozzy, the boy on the left, and Kiwi. Ozzy a kiwi.
Dana Goldberg
Cute.
Alison Gill
Oh, look, how sweet. Which. Who's on the right? Kiwi is on the right. She looks like trouble.
Dana Goldberg
Yeah, she's like, hello. The other one's just like peacefully, like, meditating.
Alison Gill
Yep. So great. Thank you for that information.
Dana Goldberg
All right, this one's from Susan. No pronouns. No, there are pronouns. I don't know what's wrong with me today.
Alison Gill
We have a lot of we. You and I talked about this before we hit the record button. There's a lot of adrenaline going on right now because of what's happening Trump is doing here in our district.
Dana Goldberg
That's actually very, very true. Thank you for having Mumbaiek. All right, this is from Susan, and her pronouns are she and her. My niece celebrated Pride Month this year by asking her longtime girlfriend, who happens to be a trans woman, to marry her. Our whole family couldn't be happier for them. They are the cutest couple ever. Now there is no picture included because Susan didn't send one. And that is okay. Yeah, you're allowed. You're allowed.
Alison Gill
Yeah, I might not either if. If my right to exist were in jeopardy. Yeah, seriously, congratulations.
Dana Goldberg
Should I pop the next one?
Alison Gill
Yeah, go for it.
Dana Goldberg
All right, there's no pronouns on this one. And it's Anonymous. Hey AG and dg, thanks for all your work to bring us the news with swearing. The Portrait Gallery. One of my many museums that is part of the Smithsonian complex houses presidential portraits. I can see where this is going already. Since the director was fired by the Orange Menace. I wanted to get there before the whitewashing of the creators and contents in the Muse Museum to see Obama's portrait. While I was there, I took a bird photo of Drump's portrait. Thanks for keeping us sane in these crazy times, Trump.
Alison Gill
Yeah, that's their original name. And by the way, I loved it when the guy from Germany came over in the Oval Office meeting and he presented him with a The present that he brought Trump was a birth certificate. A German birth certificate of his grandfather. It was just kind of like a like epic level trolling.
Dana Goldberg
I love it. I love, I love that people are doing that because you've got find a way to embarrass him.
Alison Gill
Just a reminder, you're an immigrant. You know your family. Family of immigrants. Anyway, great bird watching photo. Thank you so much for that. Next up, Anonymous Pronoun she and her hello Beans Queens. I'm fairly new to your podcast. Welcome Anonymous. My big sister recommended it when I was doged from my contracted job supporting the VA and I was doom scrolling in complete despair back in January and February. I love your humor and friendship. I feel like you're my friends too and we're just hanging out talking about the fuckery that's going on in our country. Somehow it helps. You know what else helps? Kitty bellies. My good news today is that Pumpkin's glorious ample belly, unlike most kitties, not a trap. Rub her belly for luck as if she were a furry laughing Buddha. And she purrs and purrs and purrs. Put your face in the soft pristine fluff and she'll wrap her little arms around your head and groom you to comfort you. And let me tell you, it works. Here's Pumpkin offering her stress relieving talents to anyone who needs calming purrs and gentle comfort, which is pretty much everyone's sane these days. I'm gonna actually rub the belly on the computer laptop screen. Okay, very cute. Thank you, Anonymous. Welcome.
Dana Goldberg
Welcome indeed. This is from Robin. Pronoun she and her hello, beans, queens, et al. I loved hearing from the listener who protested in the rain every weekend in Maine. Me too, Robin, your listeners of a certain age will know how to pronounce. Okay, here we go. It's Passamaquoddy. Passamaquoddy. Because that's where Pete's dragon is set. Oh, it's Passamaquoddy.
Alison Gill
Oh, you got it.
Dana Goldberg
There you go. For my pod pet tax, for my pet tacks, there's a picture of our driveway duck. We all need a driveway duck. Although we live across the street from the lake, this is the first time I've seen a mallard in our yard. Thanks for keeping us informed and helping us get into good trouble.
Alison Gill
Hi, driveway duck. Now, I have the Darkwing Duck theme song in my head, but with driveway duck. I love this. Thank you, Robin. Next up, from Bob. Pronouns he and him. Hey, you guys. Okay, I'm reading that as sloth from Goonies. Okay.
Dana Goldberg
There you go.
Alison Gill
Bonjour from the southwest of France. We look forward to your podcast every day and enjoy your unvarnished coverage of current events. We were growing more disenchanted every day with legacy media who seem too timid to report what's actually happening. But I'm not writing to rant against mainstream media. Sane washing problems. Problem. I have a couple other things I want to share. First, we were listening to the latest Nobody Listens to Paula Poundstone podcast. I love her. Paula started out with a shout out to the Daily Beans. So how cool is that? We highly recommend Paula's podcast. We look forward to it with the same baited breath reserved for the Daily Beans. Bob, I hope you heard Paula on our show a little while back. Second, for people heading out to the no Kings rallies and are unsure of their rights, check the American Civil Liberties Union website. There are pages there describing the rights of people attending protests, as well as the rights of people in other scenarios. We'll have a link in the show notes. We're going to rally in Montpelier, the one in France, not Vermont, for Podfet Tax. I'm attaching a picture of Willow. Our son found him on the mean streets of Troy, New York around 21 years ago. Willow made the move to France with us and has adjusted very well. He's an old guy, but he still enjoys his pate. Thanks for all you do.
Dana Goldberg
Look at his sweet face.
Alison Gill
21. This cat can drink.
Dana Goldberg
I love it.
Alison Gill
I Love this so much, Bob. Thank you. All the way from France. Appreciate you.
Dana Goldberg
Yes. All right, we have Jenny Pronouns she and her in Brooklyn now, glowing from my experience. Last week I was at Kingsborough Community College in South Brooklyn. Inspired by too much bad news, I printed up a flyer explaining that Andrew Cuomo is bad for cuny. Cuny, the New York City University system and listed three ranked choice candidates. Brad Lander, Adrian Adams and Zoran Mamdani, recommended by a pro CUNY organization. Now on the back I wrote in marker, Fuck Cuomo, not CUNY. I handed it out 50 times. You know what? All I had to say was that Andrew Cuomo is a fuck that guy sort of guy. And we have too many of those fuck that guy sort of guys.
Alison Gill
I love Brooklyn so much.
Dana Goldberg
Everyone I know. I probably should have read that with an accent. You know what? All I had to say was that Andrew Cuomo was a fuck that guy sort of guy. And we have too many of those fuck that guy sort of guys. That might be a little Long Island. Nah, that was more Brooklyn. All right, everyone got that pretty quickly. I love ranked choice voting because you don't have to sell anyone on one special person. I'm a Brad Lanterner girl because I appreciate competent city management. The youngins are all about Zoran Mamdani. Excuse me with the buzz, but fuck Andrew Cuomo. By way, I agree with that. Don't rank him. Tell your friends and family. We don't need that dipshit in our lives. I love this person. He slashed the CUNY budget by $500,000. He was ousted from office through compulsive sexual harassment and he was complicit in the deaths of my friend's parents from COVID in nursing homes. The 19 year old kids didn't know any of this and they were ready to hear it. They were really into the we don't need any more that guy's message. I had two separate tables of old outer Brooklyn bros, not unlike Kingsborough alum Andrew Dice Clay, shouting fuck Cuomo. Fuck Cuomo. It was awesome. What is effective messaging? Just say so and so is a fuck that guy sort of guy. We've got enough of those guys right now. Everyone feels that message. I started this before the ICE thing in LA started, but man, as a New Yorker, I feel this. I think I'm going to dress up professionally and hang out and pass out know your rights flyers in front of New York City immigration courthouse every chance I get now. Oh my God, I love this person for. I know for podpet tacks. Here's my cat, Traj. I think that's right. Traj the cat who loves being held in a wearable baby carrier. Sadly, my boy died of lymphoma this spring. I am bereft but enjoyed spoiling him with cuddles and unlimited salmon in his final days. Here we are going to the vet on subway. He's strapped to my chest in the baby carrier. Much love and gratitude. Oh my God, Jenny. I love you.
Alison Gill
Right? Fuck that guy sort of guy. I love that messaging.
Dana Goldberg
He's a fuck that guy sort of guy.
Alison Gill
I'm gonna employ that messaging going forward. Thank you, Jenny. I'm stealing that beautiful kitty. By the way. I'm so sorry for your loss. Next up from rt. Pronouns he and him. We need to take back American symbolism. I agree, Artie. I refuse to let these anti Americans co opt our flag. I served for six years in the Air Force. My dad served for 20. My brother served for six. Our grandpa was a Vietnam veteran. I love our country and what it stands for. The pro Trump portions of my family always love to reference the left displaying all these diversified flags and images to claim anti American. And it sucks hearing that. I truly believe that we need to take our flag back. The American flag, the red, white and blue patriotic songs, all of it. And in no way am I saying don't display other flags or symbols. Absolutely do so. But do so alongside an American flag. Like our guy, you know who. Our guy who always turns up at the rallies with the big giant flag pole with the American flag.
Dana Goldberg
I love him.

Wave a pride flag while wearing red, white and blue. Make the law enforcement have to arrest someone displaying an American flag or American symbology because it matters. It's powerful. I'm as liberal as they come and I display an American flag outside my house in the same breath, denounce our president and the actions of our country since January 20th to anyone I can. The American flag, red, white and blue. The bald eagle, the star spangled banner. God bless America. It belongs to us. Us. All of us. All races, all sexes, all genders, all people. We must take it back. I ask that at any rally or protest you go to please display the colors and symbols that were meant to represent all of us and take them back for us, the people.
Dana Goldberg

Dana Goldberg
It was nice.
Alison Gill
I miss those days.
Dana Goldberg
It's like, norm.
Alison Gill
Yeah, that was our norm.

Y' all mean, like, the world to me. You too, Dana. And yeah, thank you so much. Do you have any final thoughts before we go?
Dana Goldberg
No, I think you covered it all right.

In the June 10, 2025 episode of The Daily Beans, hosts Allison Gill and Dana Goldberg delve into a series of pressing national and international issues, blending progressive perspectives with sharp commentary. The episode, titled "World Class Haters," covers topics ranging from military deployments and legal battles to environmental activism and public health controversies.
The episode opens with a tense update on the United States Marine Corps' mobilization in Los Angeles County. Allison Gill narrates the situation:
[02:33] "From CBS News, the military has put 700 Marines on high alert to possibly deploy to Los Angeles, following statements from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth."
Dana Goldberg provides context, emphasizing that the deployment is a response to tensions rather than actual unrest:
[01:46] "All this stuff that's going on in LA... all a ploy so that Trump can see how far the people are going to let him push and his unconstitutionality."
The deployment has sparked legal challenges, with California Attorney General Rob Bonta suing the Trump administration for the unlawful deployment of National Guard troops without the governor's consent. Bonta argues that the invocation of emergency powers is baseless, stating:
[04:25] "Let me be clear. There is no invasion, there is no rebellion. The president is trying to manufacture chaos and crisis on the ground for his own political ends."
The hosts critique the treatment of Marines, highlighting their lack of basic necessities while on high alert:
[04:25] "It's despicable the way he's treating these Marines."
A significant media controversy is discussed next. Allison Gill reports that ABC News has suspended correspondent Terry Moran after he tweeted that Stephen Miller, the deputy White House chief of staff, is a "world class hater." She quotes the suspension statement:
[10:03] "ABC News stands for objectivity and impartiality. I'm sorry, but Calling Stephen Miller full of hate is objective and impartial."
Dana Goldberg expresses frustration over perceived double standards in media accountability:
[10:05] "It's ridiculous."
The hosts draw parallels to previous incidents, referencing ABC News’ settlement over defamation claims related to remarks about Trump, thereby questioning the network's commitment to impartiality.
The episode sheds light on immigration enforcement issues, focusing on the arrest of a former Afghan National Army soldier by ICE in Houston. Allison Gill details the individual's situation:
[06:51] "A former Afghan national army soldier in the process of applying for asylum in the US was arrested last month by federal immigration agents at his Houston area home."
Dana Goldberg underscores the personal impact, noting the man's family ties in the U.S. and the broader implications for asylum seekers:
[06:51] "He has eight kids. Two of those kids were born in the United States during the last four years."
The hosts criticize ICE’s actions, highlighting the lack of transparency and authority in stripping asylum protections:
[06:51] "They don't have the authority to do that."
A bright spot amidst the heavy news is the election outcome within the D.C. Bar Association. Allison Gill and Dana Goldberg celebrate the victory of Diane Seltzer, who secured the position with a staggering 91% to 9% vote against Pam Bondi's brother, Brad Bondi.
[11:44] "Seltzer beat Pam Bondi's brother 91% to 9%... no irregularities in the voting system."
This decisive win is portrayed as a significant achievement for progressive representation within legal circles.
Environmental activist Greta Thunberg’s arrest by Israeli forces makes headlines as Allison Gill reports:
[06:51] "A Gaza-bound aid boat carrying Greta Thunberg and other activists arrived at an Israeli port after being detained."
The boat was part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition's efforts to deliver humanitarian aid amid the Israel-Hamas conflict. The hosts recount the activists' claims of unlawful boarding and confiscation of aid supplies:
[06:51] "The Freedom Flotilla Coalition said the activists were kidnapped by Israeli forces while trying to deliver desperately needed aid."
Allison Gill highlights internal dissent within the National Institutes of Health (NIH), where employees have published the Bethesda Declaration opposing Trump administration cuts. The declaration criticizes the politicization of scientific research and calls for the preservation of scientific integrity.
[15:01] "Those who wrote the Bethesda Declaration were joined by outside supporters in a second letter signed by members of the public, including more than a dozen Nobel Prize-winning scientists."
This movement underscores the commitment of NIH staff to uphold unbiased scientific practices despite external pressures.
A controversial move by Health Secretary RFK Jr. is discussed, where he has removed the entire CDC Vaccination Advisory Committee:
[08:18] "RFK Jr. removed every single member of the scientific committee that advises the CDC on vaccines and pledged to replace them with his own picks."
The hosts express concern over the potential impact on public health policy and vaccination strategies, suggesting this could undermine scientific guidance.
