This message is brought to you by Venmo. It's not easy being a football fan, especially in the postseason. Watching your favorite team botch a fourth and long, failing to get out of bounds on a two minute drive or fumbling the transfer on a simple handoff, that's hard. But transferring money with Venmo on DraftKings, that's easy. Football is hard. Paying with Venmo is easy. DraftKings.com we're here in Tampa, Florida at Raymond James Stadium. Another outdoor game. Ice might melt. It could be historic or it could be chaos. This is the H. Favorite drawer. The Hockey News is right here. Ethan and Rosie is in the studio. I'm Roy Bellamy. We are in Tampa for stadium series. This is the Hockey Show. You can watch us on YouTube at the Hockey Show DLS, on tick tock at the Hockey Show 7 and on X Instagram and threads at Hockey Show DLS. As I said, we are in Tampa and we got a look at the forecast and it said snow flurries. Like that's, that's crazy. I don't think it's going to actually snow, but it's going to be interesting here.
David Dwark
It's cool. I mean, look, I think I mentioned it the other day on X, like the hockey gods aren't only smiling at Tampa, but they're kind of laughing at us right now because it's not just cold, it's Florida cold. It's really cold. It's going to get down potentially into the 30s over the next couple of nights. So definitely fortunate because as we saw down in Miami, like they got amazing weather for the Winter Classic down there. Couldn't have asked for better. So, yeah, it's just pretty awesome how it's all working out for the NHL and these outdoor games here in Florida.
Roy Bellamy
What do you say is going to be the main difference that's going to happen between Winter Classic and stadium series? Outside of the location, what do you think is going to happen?
David Dwark
I think it's just going to feel a lot different because it's a much bigger stadium, it's more open, there's going to be a lot more fans, probably going to be a lot noisier. The fact that they've had to build the ice under this massive tent behind Us just to make sure that whatever weather implement might happen didn't impact the ice build. But it's. It's just really cool the way that they're building it on a giant pirate map. I think it's really neat. So there's just a lot that, you know, after they blew me away with my expectations for the Winter Classic, my bar is significantly raised for this one, and I really think they're going to kill it.
Rosie
Have you guys been to the ice already or you haven't been able to see it?
Roy Bellamy
No, we literally just got here for the recording of the hockey show. We haven't gone down to see any of the build. I don't know if we'll be able to go down to see any of the build. We might get thrown out of here. So. That's a good question. Rosie, we're going to have to ask. Ask some questions. Do you think we're going to get thrown out of here?
David Dwark
I think if we do what we were talking about and try just sneaking down there with our states, somebody might grab us by the back of our collar and Fred Flintstone us out the window. But we got to try, right? Like, it's so unique, so cool. We got to see if there's some way, if we can get down there.
Roy Bellamy
All right. So we're going to figure it out. But it looks beautiful out there. The sun is out. It is chilly. It's. I don't know if we got the 50 degrees yet, but it's a bit chilly. But it's better than New York. It is a disaster up there. A whole bunch of snow and such. I found this interesting. This happened. Apparently the National Hockey League is not issuing supplemental discipline anymore. That task has been sent over to the Department of Player Safety. So George Perros and them boys are going to take over, handing out fines and suspensions for everything that's in the rulebook now. The fans have not been happy with the dps, the way they've been handling things as far as the physical aspect of the. The rule book, as far as boarding and, you know, and illegal checks that I had. They have not been happy because some. Some issues have been skirted. Others have been, I guess, either rightfully or not rightfully been supplemented. There's been discipline for that. So what do you think of this move? And is it going to get any better? What are we talking about here?
David Dwark
You'd like to think that if they're making a change, that there's a plan behind it with how it's going to be different and why? I think as you talk about a lot of what people have been frustrated with, as you know, we're in person in a press box right now, so Roy's got to do some in person producing. So that's what you're seeing right now. But no, I think one of the big issues that people have had with the DPOs and just how fines and suspensions have been handed out is the inconsistencies where they can look at one play and say, okay, I see that that was a suspension, but now I see this play and it looks almost identical and punishment is much different. So I think that's where a lot of the frustration comes. So I'm hoping that with this change, the idea is that they're going to. Maybe they've got some kind of a new hierarchy or a way that they're going to judge these things just to make it seem like a little bit more uniform. Because I think that's why a lot of people get upset, is that we really have no idea what the hell they're doing.
Ethan
I'm sure this will only turn down the noise. Sorry, guys. I'm sure this will only turn down the noise. Also, you forgot to say hi to the most important guest on the show today, which is. Percy's back. Percy's back. But I'm sure this will.
Roy Bellamy
Why, Ethan? Why are you in the back?
Ethan
Like, something was going on. This is actually a really good story. Something was going on. I sit at the. I was sitting at the seat I normally sit at, Roy, but for some reason, at that seat only, there was piano music in the headphones, and it was driving me absolutely bonkers. Like, I could not figure out why there was piano music coming from the headphones, and it was driving me insane, so I had to move. Otherwise I might have literally lost my head on this show. And that's before we even talk about the Florida Panthers and that.
Rosie
Hold on.
Roy Bellamy
Let's dive into this piano situation a little bit.
Ethan
Yeah. Okay.
Roy Bellamy
Did Rose hear this piano music?
Ethan
No, no, no.
Rosie
It was just. Ethan, when I put the headphones, wow. It was there.
Ethan
I got in and I'm like, why do I hear piano music? And Rose is like, I don't hear piano music. And I'm like, okay, now something's really wrong. So then I went around to all of the headsets in the shipping container, and none of the headsets in the shipping container were hearing piano music for some reason. Only your seat, Roy was hearing piano.
Rosie
It's your fault.
Ethan
I don't know why So I don't know. Like, I don't know. It was freaky. And I'm asking Jason. I'm like, jason, is why is there piano music? And nobody's giving me an answer. And then I turned off everything that was on. On the board to see if something was playing out piano music, whether that be a soundboard or something. I don't know what. Here comes GQ to try and solve the problem, I'm guessing. But there was piano music coming from that. That chair, and I don't understand why. And I'm telling you, I literally was like, I've been super busy today, running around doing a bunch of stuff. I was about to go crazy. Like, I was about to absolutely lose my head.
Roy Bellamy
So anyway, did Jeremy bring his piano?
Rosie
No.
Ethan
You would think. You would think that guy loves. Nobody loves playing a piano more than Jeremy. Tashay.
Roy Bellamy
All right. As you were saying, Ethan?
David Dwark
Yeah.
Ethan
I'm sure this will turn down the noise on the fact that George Parros played for the Florida Panthers back. Back in the day and so that he apparently has some kind of favoritism towards the Florida Panthers. But gq, listen, give it up for Danny. Gq, guys. I mean, come on. The best.
David Dwark
The best.
Ethan
Anyway, yeah, I. I don't know too much about how this process works, Roy, but I just look at through everything for. Through a Florida Panthers lens. Wow. Cut that for the club. I look at everything through a Florida Panthers lens, and I'm sure this will turn down the noise now that George, Pero seemingly has full control over suspens. Those kind of things.
David Dwark
I say turn the volume up. Bring. Bring all the noise. At this point, who cares? Like, as long as they keep on churning out the way they have been, the way that the Panthers are probably going to go for the next several years. Ethan, just keep bringing it up. George Paros, Colin Campbell, I don't care.
Ethan
I love it, dude. No, I love it. I love how mad it makes everybody that the Panthers supposedly get all the calls, even though last night they had another bad call go against them. We saw what happened on Tuesday night in the game against Utah where you have that stupid embellishment rule and then a hold on the empty net gets completely missed. I mean, I'm just, you know, it's just the most ridiculous narrative out there, but that's the narrative that you get when you win two Stanley Cups back to back, and people are really mad about it because you're from the state of Florida.
Roy Bellamy
So. All right, while we're talking about the Panthers and while Percy's on your console. Let's go into the Panthers then, and talk about the week that was. The Panthers finally get Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marshan in the same lineup for the first time since they lifted the Stanley Cup. Now, I got a lot of.
Ethan
For about seven periods.
Roy Bellamy
For about seven periods. Now I got a lot of. During the. Against the spread during the big show last week because apparently I failed to mention that it's the first time ever that Matthew Tkachuk and Brad Marshan played in the regular season. Like, they lifted the Stanley cup together. Like, give me a break, all right? Don't. Let's get on. Like, give me a break here. I'm just trying to give a pick. All right. Over here making fun of me for no apparent reason, but it was the first time ever in a regular season that those two got to play together. Let's go with this week, all right? So the Panthers beat Minnesota in. In Minnesota, and that was a big win, 4 to 3 in overtime. And then the Panthers trounced the Blackhawks 5 to 1. They came home, lost to Utah in a. In the. In just a ridiculously annoying game. They had the two. Okay. And they had the two embellish embellishment calls. And then Florida lost to St. Louis five to four in a game that should have went to overtime but didn't go to overtime because of that terrible penalty on Nico Mikola. So that's where we are right now. The Panthers are back at home on Saturday. We're gonna miss that game. They are playing the Winnipeg Jets. So let's talk about the week that was. David, I'm.
David Dwark
I'm pissed. I'm. I'm pissed off because of the embellishment calls. I. I hate that call in general. I don't think. I think it should just be taken out completely. Like, these are hockey players. Look at what Trevor Zrus did.
Ethan
Or.
David Dwark
Excuse me, not what Trevor Z Did. Look what Macklin Celebrini did. We'll get to that later. Just in terms of how hockey players are good people. But, dude, can we just get rid of the embellishment call and then also stop bleeping. I almost dropped an F bomb button. Stop bleeping. Pushing your own players or the other team's players into your own goalie. Can we stop doing that because A, goalies are getting hurt. B, these dumbass penalties are getting called. I'm just very frustrated over DPOs. I hope you're gonna get your together. That's all I know.
Ethan
Yeah, I was at that Utah game, boys. And that was tough. I mean, that was probably the most frustrated I've been after a Panther game this year. I should have put the video in. There's this really funny video Kirsten took of me walking out of the stadium, like, yelling on the phone at my dad because of how annoying the game was. But it feels like right now, like, each loss that the Panthers suffer is dumber and more frustrating than the last one because the stakes keep going up. I mean, last night's loss puts you eight points out of a playoff spot. You have two huge games next week when you play Buffalo and Boston. Not, not back to back, but, you know, one Tuesday and then Thursday or Monday and then Wednesday. It's. It's going to be a really tough stretch for the Panthers right now. And they basically, at this Olympic break, they're going to have to get back to within about four points if they want a real chance. But eight points with 30 games left, and nobody in the Atlantic seems to want to lose. I mean, everybody just keeps winning. Boston is on fire. I mean, look at these records. Recently. The Bolts are 161 and 1 in their last 18. The Red Wings are 82 and 2 in their last 12. The Sabers are 23 and 1 in their last 24, and the Bruins are 122 and 1 in their last 15. Like, the Panthers aren't necessarily playing at a bad pace right now. The teams in front of them are just playing at such insane paces that they can't keep up with them. And they're going to have to not only get hot, but the teams in front of them are going to have to come back down to earth if they're going to want to make a playoff spot. And it's going to be tough because none of these teams seem to want.
Rosie
To go away, according to ChatGPT.
Roy Bellamy
Oh, no.
Rosie
Yes. Florida Panthers have roughly a 56% chance of making the playoffs. So maybe my hot takes that I did, like, way earlier, they're going to be true and they're not going to even make the playoffs. Like, 56% is a number that I believe, but how they're playing, I think is going to go down, down, down and down.
Roy Bellamy
I believe Money Puck will have been a better source for that there, Rosie.
Ethan
I'll check Money Puck right now, Roy.
Rosie
But it went to Money Puck. Actually. It actually says Money Puck.
Roy Bellamy
Oh, there we go. Good job. Good job.
Rosie
Went to Money. So it's.
Ethan
It's Money Puck actually right now has them at 41.9%. The Athletic, I think at the start of this week or last week maybe had them up to 72. That was the best their chances have been so far this year. I'm not sure where the athletics odds stand, but 42 point, 41.9% for the Panthers these last two games have basically buried them because it's been four point nights for the Sabres and the Bruins and the Panthers each of these nights. So they're gonna have to get hot. And also like I said, you know, these teams are gonna have to get cold, but they're not gonna be able to get hot. If every single night it seems like a new guy is out of the lineup, like you get a little healthier. Kachuk comes back, Martian comes back and then Lundell goes out of the lineup. Obviously Seth Jones has now been out of the lineup and will be out of the lineup until at least after the Olymp Olympics. Brad Marchand leaves the game last night in the third period after he missed eight games. So it's just they, you can only survive so much. And I know that, like people say, well, the Lightning have had injury issues too and they're still playing great hockey, but it doesn't feel like it's been quite to the extent that the Panthers have had. I think they've averaged like five and a half players out of every game this season. It's insane. And also to boot, like the Panthers aren't getting good enough goaltending. The Lightning are, you know, have Andre Vasilevsky who's playing at a very high level this year, and Tarasov's playing well for a backup. But you know, Bob has really struggled this year and that hasn't helped when it comes to the injuries. But you can also put it into context of there's not a lot of structure in front of him right now because these lines are bouncing around all over the place. I know I'm ranting, but you know, last night you have a line of Greer and Samiskevich or, and, and, and, and, and I forget who else was on the line with them. The third line center. Oh my God. Oh, Looser. Ryan and Greeter and I can't even remember. Oh, Schwint was the guy. It's like these lines are shuffling. Yeah, my mind's in a blender too, guys. I'm in a very bad place. I don't think the Panthers are going to make the playoffs. And this is really the first time. This is the first. No, this is the first time this year that I've really thought like it's, it's bleak right now. Eight points with 30 games and everybody else is playing hot. Like I'm telling you, they got to get back to within four at the, the break.
Roy Bellamy
All right, so we're looking at milestone markets, right? We have Thanksgiving, we have Christmas and New Year's. Now we got the Olympics and we're going to have trade deadline. So those are the four spots going up until the end of the season that we have to look at and where we are in the we. I say we as if I'm a part of the team. But the royal we as a league where we are in the standings, that's what we got to look forward to. Now the Olympics is coming up. That means rest for. Well, rest for like a third of the team because the other two thirds of this team is going to Milan, but rest for this league. We'll see what's going to happen after the Olympics and where things go going up into the trade deadline.
David Dwark
Yeah, I mean, look, to Ethan's point, it's. It's become a little bit more difficult situation. But the way that the season has gone, just with all so many teams kind of tightly packed together in a playoff race, it's been ebbs and flows. I don't think we can count on Boston and Buffalo and Detroit and all these teams that are above Florida continuing to play at this level the way Tampa has just been lights out. And you know what? If they do, then that's the season and it has. And then when we get back and it's around the trade deadline, then Bill Zito can plan for the future in a different way. But I am not counting the Panthers team out. I think that they are going to continue to start building momentum as they get healthier, assuming that they don't keep getting decimated by injuries. The time off is certainly going to help in that regard. But Ethan, I kind of get where you're coming from. The. It's getting late. Early, I guess would be the phrase. But.
Ethan
But it's not late. It's not late early anymore, Dave. Like, it's late with 30 games left in the season. Like 3 quarter, like 2 thirds of the way through the season now, like that. That's the only thing. Like, yes, of course, if we were eight points out and it was December or because of course there's no big games in December, but there's big games in January when you're eight points out of the playoff spot and. And it's.
Roy Bellamy
It.
Ethan
It's getting late fast. I would say at this point it's not getting late early anymore. It's getting late fast. And it is late now, boys, like, tiebreaker. But there's two games in hand, right? Like, and we, you know, it's not six. It's not six points with, you know, three games in hand. It's eight points with one or two games in hand. Like, it's, it's bleak. It's bleak. But look, if anybody can do it, it's the Florida Panthers, right? If anybody can do it. Like, I believe in this team's ability to do it, especially if Seth Jones comes back after the Olympics. Depending on when Dimitri Kulakov, Jonah Gadjevic, there's a lot of guys to get back, but also, there's no guarantee that guys won't continue to be in and out of the lineup like they have been for the last two months or so.
Roy Bellamy
All right, it's time for puck luck brought to you by DraftKings. DraftKings. The Crown is yours, David. Please.
David Dwark
Please. Well, look, we're a little limited this week because there's only one game tonight, but I was able to dissect some value. We're going to do some alternate lines and I know I always have a good feeling, but I have a good feeling about this one. It's Chicago against Columbus. The Blackhawks are hosting the Blue Jackets. We're going to go three shot props all to go over two and a half. We're going to take Connor Bedard, who's hit this number in nine of his past 10. And Columbus also gives up the second most shots in the league. On Columbus, we're going to take Adam Fantilli and Kirill Marchenko to go over two and a half shots. Fantilli's hitting seven of eight. Marchenko is hitting 10 of 12. And Chicago allows the seventh most shots in the lead. Goal wise, we're going to take Columbus to score over two and a half goals. They've scored four plus in five of their past seven and Chicago was allowed four plus and three straight. And then we're also going to take the Blackhawks on the money line. This is, for some reason, I don't have the odds in front of me. I send them to Ethan. I think it's like +622, something like that. But this is a good one. I feel like taking the alternate lines. We can actually dissect a little bit of value tonight.
Roy Bellamy
All right, so there you go. Maybe we'll win money this time. It is time for Rosa in unminuto. Rosie.
Rosie
Okay, First, I want to tell you guys why I'm wearing this. You don't care. But my eyes are very puffy, so don't blame me about things. Come on.
Roy Bellamy
So I'm not blaming you for anything. Please.
Rosie
Recompense, king.
Roy Bellamy
All right, that was Rosa in Unuto. And now it's time for Rose in a minute. Go ahead, Rose.
Rosie
Let me give it to you guys, since you don't understand Spanish. Tickets. This is one minute of hockey with Rose. And this time we're heading to Philadelphia, where the Flyers decided to suffer altogether. The week started terribly. 40 loss to the Islanders and Isla Sorrow. King handed them a shout out like it was Christmas. And it was not Christmas. Pedigree was scored twice and the Flyers didn't even tickle them. The fans begged at least one please. Spoiler. It didn't happen. They came. The most unfair game of all. Travis Konetskin dropped a hat trick against Columbus, and they still lost. Five. Three. I mean, score three goals and it's seen as enough. Pure pain. And just in case that wasn't enough, Boston said, let me help you. 6. Three losses to the Bruins. Another long night for Philly. So the Flyers fish in a week. Three losses, a lot of effort, zero rewards, and kinetic wondering what else has to do. Up next, the Kings. Because clearly this week wasn't enough punishment. The Flyers took off, but this week they crashed. This was one minute of hockey with Rose. Your weekly recap of pog passion and a little bit of chaos.
Venmo Announcer
Wow.
Roy Bellamy
I like that. Next week was dancing like Dan Louis Batard there with the headsets on his eyes for no apparent reason. That was great, Ethan.
Ethan
Next week's team get a good. Get a good rummage in here, boys.
Roy Bellamy
Good rummaging. Like rummaging. Yeah.
Ethan
Next week's team, the Carolina Hurricane.
Rosie
Okay.
Roy Bellamy
The Carolina Hurricane Metropolitan Division there.
Rosie
Okay? So.
Roy Bellamy
All right. Good luck with that, Rosie. Time for wins and fails. All right, David, what you got?
David Dwark
All right. My win of the week happened earlier when the Oilers were hosting Anaheim. Something happened to Oilers goaltender Tristan Jari that we see kind of fairly often with other NHL players, maybe not so much with the goalies. While sliding from his right to his left, his heel hit the post and knocked off the blade of his skate. And then he had to go and try to make a save with absolutely no traction. For anybody that's seen this happen to players, you can see it's, like, impossible to skate with that state blade. For a goalie to do it. Goalies rely so much on their edges, it's pretty ridiculous to See that? Not only did he, like, make a save, he's diving across the crease, but he can't move. So this is the big win on Christian, on Tristan Jari. Obviously having a little bit of fun in Edmonton these days. But that's so hard. I felt for him. So that's a major win that he was able to keep that puck out of the net.
Roy Bellamy
Macklin Celebrini is good.
David Dwark
Yes. Because he's very good. He's very good.
Roy Bellamy
How good is he?
David Dwark
How good is he, Roy?
Roy Bellamy
Insanely good. You know how good he is. He is good enough to win a face off without actually using the blade of his stick. All right, so during a face off against Teddy Blueger in the Vancouver Canucks, he was in a face off circle and his sticks got tied up together, so he decided to flip his stick and use the knob, the butt end of his stick, to draw the face off back in his own defensive zone. That, my friends, is a win from a guy who's really making a lot of noise for the Hart Trophy discussion.
David Dwark
I'm looking forward to putting him on my ballot.
Roy Bellamy
There you go. I'm looking forward to voting.
Ethan
I'm really afraid of what the NHL media is going to do to Macklin Celebrini in terms of just anointing him as the next Sidney Crosby and what that will do for my and Roy's perception of Macklin.
Roy Bellamy
It'll make me happy.
Rosie
Rosie, what is your win goes to the Thunderbug. He actually went scuba diving and you can see the pictures.
Roy Bellamy
Oh, Thunderbug.
Rosie
I don't know how he did not drown or chalk there, but he went for the thing, so good job, Lightning. I love it.
Roy Bellamy
Ethan, what's your win?
Ethan
Patty Kane. Boys, we need to celebrate this legend. One of my favorite players growing up, one of the guys that got me into the sport of hockey. Those Blackhawks teams were so much fun when I was first getting into The Sport around 2010. He became the all time leader in points by a US born skater last night with his 1300 75th point. Paddy Kane. An absolute legendary game. Arguably the greatest US Hockey player ever. Wish we were getting another look at him in the Olympics coming up, but he is an absolute legend and great for him to accomplish that feat.
Roy Bellamy
All right, let's go to Phil's now.
David Dwark
David, what's your feel for my fail? We're going to the echl, the main Mariners, but we're not talking about a player on their team. No, we're actually going to be talking about the Mariners directing Director of getting Catherine Horrigan, who was swept away by the pregame. The pregame gear, I guess the pregame show prop that they were using was being pulled off the ice. She was standing behind the net and it just whisked her right off her feet. And to her credit, she stuck the landing. She actually waved to the goaltender, the Mariners goaltender. She was being, you know, kind of shimmied off the ice there. But she turned a fail, I guess, into a win. So good on.
Rosie
That's a win.
David Dwark
Yeah, funny video.
Rosie
That is a win, bro, not a fail.
Roy Bellamy
And that seems like the opposite of what we were trying to do in getting fails, but yes, that is a win. All right, I have two fails. Now, I wish we had the video for one of them, but let's start with the first fail, and that's the Toronto Maple Leafs especially, and specifically Craig Baruby. We showed this photo earlier this week on the big show and he looks like, uh. Apparently there was a accident in the weight room that caused a. A serious, serious gash. Now, if you're looking. If you're looking at me on video now, my finger is pointing right here, like above my left eyebrow. It curves, as Dan said, a parabola. It curves. It's the Arch in St. Louis. And went to his other eyebrow. So it went from his eyebrow up to the top of his forehead down to his other eyebrow. And he has a black eye. It is terrible. He looks terrible. And he was able to coach. And the Maple Leaves are losing fail.
David Dwark
Number two, Anthony Davis. Scar.
Roy Bellamy
The Anthony. Yes, yes. He has one eyebrow. Now, the second fail for me, the New York Rangers. The New York Rangers apparently took three penalties on the same shift. Now I'm going to go over to this computer so I can read what the penalties were. See, Sam Kirk tripped Cal McClain. Sam Kirk cross checked Matthew Balzol. This is against the Islanders, by the way. And Matt Rempe boarded Mark Gatcomb. So that was all in the same shift. All three separate penalties on the same shift. That is very, very hard to do, especially without the other team getting a penalty.
David Dwark
So it's a five on two power play.
Roy Bellamy
No, I don't think that's how it works. Five on three and then one goes out and that starts the next power play. I believe that's rule rocks. I'm not expert on that.
David Dwark
I was told there would be no math today.
Roy Bellamy
Yeah, there's nothing I hate more than math either. What? You lost your fail. You lost.
Ethan
My fail of the week is also my fail of the Week is also the Rangers. Roy. That was my fail of the week as well. Yeah, that. That. That's like the easiest fail of the week of all time to take three penalties, two on the same guy. And then of course, at the very, very end, who else would it be but Matt R. Rempe throwing an absolute elbow into the back of a guy's head, boarding him and giving just a completely unnecessary play. The only thing the guy does is go out there and be tal. It's just. And the Rangers in general have been a fail this year. I mean, we can talk about this real quick. We have some time left. But he. They have been a disaster. They're the only team that's. And we will get to Rosie's fail. They're the only team that's completely out of it in the East. They're like 10 points behind every other team in the Eastern Conference. Just a nightmare season up at Madison Square Garden.
Roy Bellamy
Matt Rempe is big for nothing, correct? He's big for nothing. He's. He goes out there, he's throwing elbows. And that's probably the reason why he's getting in trouble so much, because his elbow is. When he stands is right here is head level to like. I mean, you just saw in the video. My elbow was up to the David's face. And that's basically. If I was like five inches taller, that probably would be Matt Rempe. But, yeah, he's big for. Not. And he can't fight either. That's the other problem.
Ethan
Not good at anything. Not good at hitting people. Not good at fighting people. Not good at skating. Not good at scoring. Not good at defense. Not good at passing. Not good at offense. He is only good at being tall, and he's not even good at that because he can barely even stand up on skates. I feel bad. I feel bad. He seems like a nice guy. Rose has a fail of the week, by the way. I thought she did.
Roy Bellamy
Before we get to roses. Failing the week. Yeah, yeah, let's just go to roses for the week because we don't have time to talk.
Rosie
Actually, it's also the Rangers, but it has another. You're gonna look at it another way. I'm sad because the. The crisis and they're spiraling and getting. Masarazzo and Joy Curie are friends of the Rangers, so if they don't go to the playlist, there's maybe no way we can talk to them. So that's my fail of the week. You can keep talking about the Rangers anyway. You have one minute bell of the.
Roy Bellamy
Week is we are not able to talk to actors on Stranger Things. Is that what I'm hearing?
Rosie
Yeah. Yeah. Because they're Rangers fans.
David Dwark
So we need the Rangers to succeed.
Rosie
We need the Rangers to succeed.
Ethan
We did see Gat Matazaro at the Winter Classic. We saw him.
Roy Bellamy
Well, you saw him. I saw him press box with Dave.
Rosie
You have one minute to talk more Rangers.
Ethan
Do we even want to talk about the Rangers for another minute?
David Dwark
Can we give. Can we give a. A preemptive win to where we are right now because of how amazing the league did at the winter?
Ethan
No, because Tampa doesn't deserve any credit for anything they do.
David Dwark
Oh, let's know. This is the state of hockey, Ethan. We're all in this together.
Roy Bellamy
Okay?
Ethan
So that's what we're going to lean into, is that we're all in this together because Tampa fans really to seem to be all in this together with.
David Dwark
The Florida Panthers, we could use a.
Ethan
Little based off their narratives, I think.
Rosie
Thank you, everybody. Roy is going to tell us where you can find us.
Roy Bellamy
Yeah, you don't have do that, Rosie. For all of us. For all you guys watching on DraftKings Network, you can check out the YouTube channel. Deandra Lou joins us here. She writes for the Hockey News and she's the beat writer for the Tampa Bay Lightning. This is the Lightning's second outdoor game. They beat the Predators 3 to 2 in the 2022 Stadium Series in Nashville. That was in front of a lot of people. That's like 69,000 fans at Nissan Stadium. I'm completely surprised you didn't say nice.
David Dwark
Caught me a little off guard there. You know what? That's a fail on my part. I apologize to everybody watching. I feel like now I should just walk away in shame.
Roy Bellamy
No, we kind of need you here. The Tampa Bay Lightning are playing the Boston Bruins. For the past 25 years, they've been a premier franchise in the NHL, especially since they started winning. Talk about the Lightning and how they changed the aspect of hockey in Florida throughout the league.
DeAndre Lou
Yeah, well, I think it goes back to probably when John Cooper got hired. I think we can track the stats on that, kind of turn things around here in Tampa and kicked off, you know, kind of what we see that hockey is here in the state of Florida. You guys know you're down in South Florida with the success of the Panthers, but the Lightning have been, I think they're an organization that has always kind of done it right.
Rosie
Right.
DeAndre Lou
They didn't try to skip steps and kind of slowly built towards it. Got two Stanley Cups, went to another Stanley Cup Final. Wasn't the result they wanted. And now they've been kind of building back to it. So I think it is just, it's an organization that does, does things the right way. Pretty much is the best way that I can describe it.
David Dwark
Tampa's been on a hell of a run over the last month, month and a half, despite missing a lot of players. Like they've missed forwards, Braden, point spin out. They've missed half their defenseman. It feels like, how are they so good this year? How have they been able to maintain and be such a dominant force in the east when They've been almost as injured as the Panthers.
DeAndre Lou
Some might argue it's crazy because it's. It's like they're key players, right? It's not just depth guys, it's Victor, Headman, Ryan McDonough. They were without Eric Chernak for a while on the blue line, so the blue line has really taken a hit. Then you talk about Braden, Point, Vassi, all those guys. I think the biggest thing with them is they've been able to call up guys from their AHL team and rely on them and they run a similar system. Everything is kind of. It's copy and paste and there's really good communication. So they've been able to just call these guys up and, you know, they've been waiting for their chance to play up here. So they're all competing for a spot and it's worked out really well. They got a guy, Dominic James, who was a draft pick for the Blackhawks, a six round guy, and he's having a great rookie year. And then Dustu, who we talked about before this, he's an undrafted guy, so the Lighting have always been really good at finding. They don't always go for the shiny object, right? They're going for the guys. They go over to Europe and scout over there and then. And it's worked out really well for them.
Roy Bellamy
John Cooper has yet to win a Jack Adams trophy for coach of the Year. Why?
DeAndre Lou
It's a great question. Great question. I've been getting asked that a lot. I think, I think that everyone is so used to the Lightning having success, like what you talked about, like, they've just. They've kind of set the standard. They've been good for so long and people underestimate what John Cooper does. It's hard to stay good, right. And competitive. And this year the injuries have been. It's a revolving door of injury. So one guy comes back, two guys are out, what he's had to do. And it also goes back to like the culture, right? Everyone talks about John Cooper and the culture that he's built, but like doing that is. Is constant work. It's, you know, good coaching. And I don't know why he has not been considered. And even this year, I don't know if you guys saw it. They're showing the votes and like where he's at. And he's not even. There's no first place votes for John Cooper, so we'll see. I think he could have won it, you know, maybe his first year coaching. Honestly could have won a couple times. We'll see this, this could be his year. But think about like having a competitive Lightning team, coaching the Olympics and maybe winning the Jack Adams. That's a, a pretty, pretty big season.
David Dwark
We have a little bit of understanding of having all that kind of success and not necessarily winning an award for Bill Zito, who's been the GM of the forever for a while now. One of the things I like most about John Cooper, he's been around him a lot the last few years. Obviously with the Panthers, he was at Four nations last year. He's just such a down to earth, even keel guy. No matter what's going on around the Lightning, no matter how team is or how low they might be, he's always just seems to keep the same demeanor. And he's such a players coach. He doesn't take out any of his guys in the media. It just must be really nice as we have Paul Maurice down in Florida. But it just must be fun to like, have a coach like that that, you know, you can work with and that, you know he's going to kind of treat you like, you know, just one of them.
DeAndre Lou
Yeah, I think that's part of it too. When you talk about like him being in the running for the Jack Adams, like that is part of it, right? It's the culture. It's how he does it when you ask the guys, and I'm sure it's very similar with, with Palmer, although I've seen him on the bench, like, he can get a little feisty. So can Coop though, you know, but with the guys talk about that, you know, it doesn't matter if they lose. He, he stays the exact same, like, even keel guy that, that he would be if they won. So there's, there's not a lot of highs and lows. It's kind of just, you know, he builds confidence in them. And I think that that is, is so much, especially when you talk about these young guys that are coming in. These guys have had to step up for Victor headman and Ryan McDonough. Those guys are, they have a lot of confidence. They know what to expect. The culture is already set. And like, all of that goes back to John Cooper, all of it.
Roy Bellamy
They haven't really lost a step since they lost them. But Stephen Stamkos, in that drama that happened before he went to Nashville, talk about the time that happened and what exactly was the disconnect there?
DeAndre Lou
Yeah, it's, it's crazy because it's, it's been a minute since Stamkos has played for the Lightning you know, I think that it's hard to say now. I think in a couple years everyone will be able to look back and have answers on that. When you talk about. And you. I don't know if you'll see this with the Panthers, but you go to three Stanley cup finals and then there was a flat cap.
David Dwark
Right.
DeAndre Lou
And so there was a lot that had to happen. They were losing players and they were trying to work around that. And it was a rough year. His last year here was a pretty rough year. They were trying to build back defensively. And so I think that that reflected in some of the, like his game and his play and just the team overall that year. So I don't. It's hard for me to say, honestly, the disconnect between what happened with the organization and Stamkos, but I know that they definitely miss him. They're looking for someone to fill that spot in the power play still to this day. And it's kind of. It's improving obviously this season they're playing pretty well. But he's kind of one of those guys to me who's always this guy that you can't really put a number on. Right. You bring so much. Certain guys just bring so much to the room and so much to the team and the organization. To me, you couldn't put a number on it. Just how I always. I always viewed it still to this day.
David Dwark
One of my favorite commercials of all time is him and Headman standing there watching the little kids playing hockey and made me start good time to start saving for college. Yeah, but you kind of talked about Stamkos role with the Lightning and how he was a power play killer. And you know, us coming from a Panthers perspective, obviously we know that all too well. But if they're looking for a guy to fill that role, I know somebody who's out there, who's available, who has been linked to the Lightning. Maybe, you know, one of many teams is Artemi Panarin. Is that something that you can maybe see happening down here to fill that role? Is there a spot spot for him? Did they make room for him? Is that something that could potentially happen?
DeAndre Lou
It's hard for me. I've seen the same thing. It's hard for me to imagine a player like Panarin coming in one from a cap perspective. I don't know how that happens. Like he carries a pretty heavy cap hit that I have not seen the Lightning really take on. I guess Jake Gensel was the. The most recent guy, you know, and you know, because you Cover a Florida team. Like, we don't see those numbers really, but anyways, they have a lot of scores already. Scoring is not that really. I don't think what, what they'll be looking for. I think it's more they want a good two way player. And also face offs are an area that they really need some help on. But that is a heavy cap it. I personally don't see that happening. But usually what it is in my experience with Julian Braceball is where you hear the most noise. Like when he says to look left, you want to look right. So that's kind of my rule of thumb. We'll see what happens. I do think they're going to make a move or two. They have a lot of guys like we talked about on the blue line. They've got an excess amount of guys, so I think that's probably where the moves are going to be.
Roy Bellamy
What would you say is the difference between Steve Eisenman and Julian Freezebawn, how they handled the team when they were GMs respectively?
DeAndre Lou
Ooh, that's an interesting question. That's a really good question. Well, I think Julian learned from Steve Yzerman. You know, I think the thing about Julian Breeseval is everyone talks about how he's almost like a stoic guy, but actually around the players you get to know him and he is actually a really cool. He's a really cool guy. And I can't really speak too much on Steve Iseram, but obviously like he learned from Steve Iserman. I think Julian keeps everything really close to the chest. You're never going to know. No one's ever going to be able to figure out. I don't think anyone's really been able to figure out any of his moves leading up to the trade deadline so far. So. But yeah, I don't know. That's a good, that's a good question. I think with Julian, he is really aggressive and he's not scared. You talk about the Stamkos move, I mean, that's like that could shake an organization, you know, in the wrong direction. They kind of took it the other way and went with it and it's been really successful. But if you would have said Julian Brisba is going to say goodbye to Steven Samkos, I don't think anyone would have believed you. So I think the biggest thing is he's just not scared to be aggressive.
David Dwark
It's just funny. Like as I'm hearing you talk about Breezois and then, you know, talking about John Cooper and just the way that they've kind of built such a dominant franchise here, it's been similar to what they've done in South Florida with Bill Zito and Paul Maurice. Bill Zito learning from Jarmo Kekeleinen in Columbus, whereas Breezewa learned from Steve Yzerman here. And just to see that kind of how it's all come together here in Florida. As a Florida native, us like me, grew up watching hockey here. I just love hearing people talk about how awesome it is to see that, you know, this has kind of basically become the state of hockey. Sorry. Sorry, guys. I know it sucks, but six straight Stanley cup finals have come through here. Florida is kind of the state of hockey, isn't it, D?
DeAndre Lou
Yeah. And I feel like the biggest thing that I don't see people talking about enough is just the culture of the two teams, right? It's a. It's a totally different culture. Yes, you can talk about the weather and you talk about the taxes, but really, when you talk about, like, the coaches and how they interact with their players, you talk about John Cooper being a players coach, right? There's no. It's not toxic, it's not unhealthy. The players feel comfortable. I know Brandon Hagel, I talked to him the other day and he said he would feel comfortable going up to Julian Briesball and asking him a question. He's not intimidated. He could go up to John Cooper. Anyone in the organization. Everyone's kind of on the same page. I feel like the Panthers are the exact same way. So there's something to be said. I think, you know, some. Some teams could take notes from what they're doing here in Florida, you know, and I feel like, I mean, this is another big year for, for the Florida hockey teams. Like, the lightning are crushing it. So we could see two Florida teams in the playoffs again.
Roy Bellamy
Let's talk about the vibe around the city for this event. Stadium series right now. How's it looking? Especially. Especially considering that the Gasparilla parade is on Saturday. So these two events are kind of commingling.
DeAndre Lou
Yeah, well, there's definitely a buzz in the city and I think when I was here this week at the stadium, a lot of people from the league were talking about that they're going around and they can tell that people are really excited about the game. The fact that it is on the same weekend of Gasparilla is going to be. It's going to be a long shift for everybody. You know, Saturday and Sunday, I think everyone's just going to kind of wake up Have a couple hours of sleep, wake up and make their way to the stadium. The weather is cooperating, which I think is amazing, because you really never know what you're going to get in Florida. I personally was a little nervous, you know, I'm sure you guys were for your game too. Is like, is the ice going to melt? So we're going to have water to skate on, you know. But the weather's cooperating and the city is really excited. And this has been a long time coming for Tampa. Honestly, they talk about the lighting being as good as they have been for so long, over a decade. So it's a. It's a long time coming for us.
David Dwark
Yeah, they've been trying to get an outdoor game here in Tampa for a long time. So to see it kind of coming to fruition and the way that they've done it, like right behind us, they have this massive tent structure that they built just so they get the ice build coming up, it's been pretty amazing. But you mentioned Gasparilla happening this weekend, which, you know, for those of you who are outside of Florida, who are from outside of Florida, it's a huge deal for people from this area. It's very pirate friendly. Roy and I are going to be out tomorrow, hoping to. To kind of take some of that in. But what do you think we can expect as we kind of meander our way around the Gasparilla events tomorrow that you're kind of setting us up for? What. What are we going to see? Are people going to be like, literally like cheap chap chat sparrowing, talking to us?
DeAndre Lou
Correct. Yes. You're gonna wake up in the morning. I've warned, you know, I've warned some people, some family, friends that are coming to town. I'm like, you're gonna wake up in the morning, you're gonna go get coffee. You're think you're just getting coffee to prepare for your day. You're seeing grown adults dressed as Jack Sparrow talking to you in pirate talk. I mean, that's like the level. Actually, last week I was driving past Hat Tricks, which is a great hockey bar, by the way, in Tampa. It's a great hockey bar. I was driving past there and there were two pirates just casually walking down the sidewalk. And that was a. At the Lightning game last night, they had the ice crew as they were dressed as pirates. They had all the players, you know, the graphics of them as pirates. So it's a really good time. Use your imagination with it. You're gonna see a lot of things, but I think you guys are gonna have so much fun.
Roy Bellamy
Yeah, we are gonna have fun. It's gonna be a fun weekend stadium series here in Tampa. DeAndre Lou from the Hockey News covering the Tampa Bay Lightning. Thank you for joining us.
