We have a trade. This is the Hockey Show. Hello, everybody. That's David Druik of the Hockey News, Rose and Ethan on the Yoda studio. My name is Roy Bellamy. We have a YouTube page. Please visit our YouTube page. You can follow us there. At The Hockey Show DLS, we have a TikTok at the Hockey Show 7 and X in Instagram and threads at Hockey show dls. Breaking news from this morning. Elliot Freeman reported initially that the Edmonton Oilers had acquired Tristan Jari from the Pittsburgh Penguins. It was Kevin Weeks that reported that Stuart Skinner, Brett kulak and a 2029 second round pick will be going to Pittsburgh for Tristan Jari and Sarah. Samuel Poulain and Pierre Lebron also reported that the Oilers made a trade with the Nashville Predators. They will get Spencer Stasney for a 2027 third round pick. Frank Salaveri thinks that Stassney is going to be the long term replacement for Brett Kulak. Now, Jari has played three years longer than Spence, than Stuart Skinner, but Stuart Skinner has more playoff experience and bit. Can we say that essentially the same goaltender in this situation. Is this an upgrade for Edmonton?
B
They sure think so based off the price they paid to bring him over. Yeah, they are definitely whatever their goaltending department, whoever makes their decisions over there. They clearly targeted Jari as somebody that they think can come in, play within their systems and find some success. Whether that happens is tbd. What's going on in the shipping container?
A
Rose is happening. Panicking.
C
Sorry. I just found my mouse after like three months.
A
Hey, she found a great. Yay. All right, very good, Very good. Back to the show.
B
No, I'm like, I'm talking about goaltenders and I see on your face that your attention is far from what I'm talking about.
A
I mean, when you. Your arms are flapping like, and I can hear you on Ethan's mic, I tend to, you know, pay attention to what's going on.
C
I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't know.
D
That's my bad for having my mic open.
A
Yeah. Yes. Why is your mic open? You know why. Because I'm about to talk.
D
Yeah, I'm getting ready to talk.
A
Exactly.
D
I want to hear what Jorky has to say first and then I'll give my thoughts.
A
David, as we were saying, you. You believe that this is a good deal for Edmonton and he's a better goaltender than Stuart Skinner, who is now a Pittsburgh Penguin.
B
I mean, statistically, he's having a far better season than Stuart Skinner is having. I think looking it up here. Tristan Jari, nine point still here.
A
Rose, by the way. But as you were saying, David.
B
No. You keep setting me up to talk about goaltending, and then you keep cutting me off when I'm talking about goaltending.
A
Because you're a goaltender, you enjoy talking about goal. But as you were saying, saves above.
B
Expected for Christian Jari, 9.8 this season, which is in, I guess, the top half of starting goaltenders. It's not bad. Certainly better than Stuart Stinner, who, if I keep scrolling down to actually, Skinner's 6.9. A nice, decent, very nice game saved above expected. I. I'm gonna have to see him in Edmonton systems. I'm gonna have to see how the Oilers play in front of him. This kind of move can be off the ice.
A
It's not a lateral move.
B
It doesn't seem like that. We've got to see how the team responds. Like, this is the kind of thing that can invigorate a locker room. So there's a lot of variables that I'm curious to see how they come into play, but, God, they gave up a lot for this guy.
A
Yeah.
D
If Edmonton was going to upgrade their goaltending situation, I figured they would have moved Skinner into the two spot and, you know, acquired somebody to be the one there. I don't think you're getting any better by acquiring Tristan Jari and continuing with a Jari Pickard pairing. Like, we forget how important backup goaltenders can be in the NHL so often, and I just kind of think they just did the same exact thing. And there's a couple of tweets I want to. I want to go to one in a second that we have in video, but there's a couple of tweets I want to read out that kind of describe how I'm feeling about the trade. Our buddy Pete Blackburn, from what Chaos said, I genuinely cannot believe we waited two years for the Oilers to make a goaltending move and this is what they came up with. It's it that that's how it feels like we expected the Oilers to kind of make a splash when it came to goaltending, and they went out and got Tristan Jari, whose career numbers are really solid. But you also have to have some context here. But being behind a good Pittsburgh defense and then now moving to an Edmonton defense. Roy, you have something.
A
So backup goaltender now is. Well, has been and still will be Calvin Pickard.
D
Yeah.
A
How do we feel about that?
B
One negative. 1.5 goals saved above expected. Slightly better than Sergey Bobrovsky's negative two.
D
Yeah, it's been a rough year for, you know, as a Panther fan, we can't say much about Gold. Bad goaltending right now. It hasn't been pretty for the Panthers defensively. They have some issues as well.
C
Given up Spencer Knight.
D
Oh well, I mean Seth Jones got a sustain the cup. So it's like. It's hard to say that. But yes, the Panthers are lacking right now like in the. We'll get to that later in the Panther den. But another thing I wanted to read off here is Dom Lechison from the Athletic, who has been on our show before trading a second round pick Brett Kulak and Stuart Skinner for students. Stuart Skinner EAS really funny. The Oilers gave up a lot here. It's a, it's a second round pick in a few years. I think it's like a 2029 second round pick or something. So that's not that valuable. But giving up Skinner and, and riding with Pickard and Jari as the pairing and Brett Kulak who has been a solid player for them especially come playoff time, feels like a hefty price to pay for basically a lateral move and we'll see what it looks like for Edmonton going forward.
B
We're also not talking about what this does on the other side of the trade. I'm just thinking about. Okay, well, you know, Edmonton, the Panthers are in a playoff battle right now. Pittsburgh is holding the second wild card spot. They just basically traded their starting goaltender.
A
For Stuart Skinner at a hot start.
D
Yeah.
A
The beginning of the season.
B
Arthur Shilobs, who I'm very high on, great young goaltender, not having the best season. 4, 4 and 5. 2.9 goals against 900 even safe percentage. And then you're going with Calvin or with Stuart Skinner. Excuse me. So is Pittsburgh like what are they. Are they kind of packing it in?
A
Right.
D
To me, this kind of signals. We're not. We don't even believe in what we're doing here. Right. Nobody really believes. I don't think a lot.
A
What are you doing?
B
They're doing it. They're set. They're.
D
They're basically saying that yes, I agree with you, David. Like this sends a message to me that don't play with Nate or Montreal.
B
Boys, but there's a Nova Scotia boy in Florida.
A
You think that just because Brad Marchand is playing for the Florida Panthers that Cindy Crosby is going to force Pittsburgh's hand and training them down here?
B
Yes. Like Brad Marchand did last season.
A
That is exactly why I just said that. You Believe.
D
I think we're getting distracted from the point here, which is that.
A
No, I'm just. I'm just pointing out we need to not. Is over here talking about.
D
We need to not talk about the Crosby thing. What we need to talk about ruffled. I, I get you're mad about the idea of Crosby playing in a Panther uniform, which is something that is like everybody, I think. But again, the point here is that. But with this goalie trade, like, Pittsburgh is basically sending a signal to everybody that, hey, we don't really believe in what's going on here and. Or we don't believe in Jari's ability to get us where we want to go because we believe in what's going on here. We think Skinner is a better option, which to me makes this trade look even worse for Edmonton because they're, you know, basically saying, hey, we believe in Jari, but even though Pittsburgh really doesn't. So weird trade all around. Like, I don't like this move for the Oilers. I think it's a very lateral move and they paid a high price for it.
B
Could there be another. Could Pittsburgh have another move in mind then? This may not be their end game. If they. Because like, I'm. I see what Ethan's saying and like, I get that, like, but if I'm Pittsburgh and I'm having a better than I expected season and they're playing very well with the roster they have, maybe they have another move in mind. Maybe Skinner isn't the end game. Maybe they're going to try to bring in another goaltender from somewhere else. They have the wherewithal that Kyle Dubas that maybe Edmonton Stan Bowman didn't have.
A
Okay, so that would make Skinner their backup if they go after another goaltender.
B
No. Maybe they're going to flip Skinner. Who knows?
A
Flip Skinner. Okay, there you go. And he had a trade Stasny from Nashville for a 2027 third round pick. And the belief that Stassny is the replacement for Brett Kulak. Do you believe that could be.
B
He's Nashville. It's tough to gauge guys, right. Like, they've been pretty awful for a couple years now. Defensively, particularly certainly number the, the analytics that I'm looking at that I can't think of the, the advanced metrics. Thank you, brain. For.
A
For the advanced metrics.
B
Yes. Just my brain wouldn't get those words to my mouth certainly indicate that there's a higher ceiling there than what we've seen in Nashville. And, you know, we know what to expect from Brett Kulak. So if they're looking for a replacement potentially. Yeah.
D
Just on the numbers to back up David here. According to Hockey Stat Cards, Kulak has a negative 1.1 defensive rating, a negative 5.4 offensive rating. So a negative 6.5 rating. Spencer Stasny has a negative 0.6 offensive rating, a plus 1.4 defensive rating. So that is upgrade there based on the underlying metrics.
A
All right. Carter Hart is currently playing for the Vegas Golden Knights. As you know, he is one of the five players acquitted in the Hockey Canada sexual assault trial. He's also one of two of those five players that have gained a kick of the tires by the NHL. And I say one of two because Dylan Dube is getting a professional Tryout for the St. Louis Blues AHL affiliate in the Springfield Thunderbirds. So that's neither here, near here or there. But back to heart last night. Go to. Nights went to Philadelphia. The Golden Knights did not start Carter Hart. In fact, the Golden Knights did not hold any media availability for Carter Hart.
B
No.
D
Right. You should reference that Carter. Philadelphia was Carter Hart's former team.
A
Yes. Yeah. Yes, yes. As I was about to say that you're absolutely right. Former team, the Philadelphia Flyers.
B
So second round pick in 2016.
A
Yeah.
B
So get this though. Like, not only did they not make him available to the media, not only did they not start him, but because of the fan reaction in Philadelphia being so negative that they had extra security around the Vegas benchmark where Hart was sitting, just in case, you know, the fans, I mean, you know, we've seen what's. What can happen in Philly. We've seen, you know, Tai Domi penalty box. Just saying, it's happened before. A little different situation. Now, obviously the anger toward Hart would be obviously different than than what Tai Domi was facing that night, but still just a very odd situation and I think we can all agree. Cowards.
A
Yeah. My main issue is not making him available to the media.
B
I mean, face the music.
A
When the Stahl brothers did what they did during Pride Night, which was not where Pride jerseys, in fact, not even attend pregame skate because they didn't want to wear the Pride jerseys, at least the Panthers put them out there on the firing line and the media asked the questions they didn't even go to. Nice even do that for Carter Hart.
B
No. So he's gone on a podcast that.
D
That'S, you know, where he can control what questions are. Exactly. This whole thing from Vegas has been absolutely ridiculous. All right. Anytime you have to release a statement, anytime you sign a player you probably shouldn't sign that player. Then they throw Mark Lazarus out of their practice facility, revoke his credential. A very credible and good reporter for the Athletic because he was willing to ask the questions and make them face the music. And then this whole saga here where they don't even play him against Philly, they go with the rotation excuse, and then they don't even put him in front of the media. Look, we all know how Vegas operates, okay? Clearly, they don't care about these accusations. The only thing they care about is they feel like Carter Hart can contribute to winning. And they continue. Continue to make cowardly moves to protect a guy that doesn't deserve to be protected. It's ridiculous behavior from the Vegas Golden Knights. And we should hold our organizations and this league to a higher standard to make them more accountable for these kinds of actions. It's terrible. And they need to do a better job.
A
I mean, you would think. You. You would think that would happen. You would think that.
D
No, you wouldn't, Roy. Because Vegas has a track record of doing this same thing over and over.
A
And over again in the real world. You would think that would happen. Of course not in this league. We are seeing far too many people in this league getting second, third, fourth, and fifth chances in this league. It's very infuriating and whatever, man. Like. All right, we're gonna move off this subject right now because we have punishments to pay, and Rose has some explanations about. About what we have to do.
C
So, yeah, we've been playing this game where David and I suck.
B
So the.
C
Three of us lost, and we haven't paid our dues. So we're gonna do it right now, and we're gonna stick our hands on water ice, and we're gonna make Ethan do it.
D
Also, why I'm not even a participant in the game, and I have to.
C
Be in the punishment because then he says we are crybabies. So he is also gonna do it.
D
And you guys haven't even done it yet. Let me see how you guys behave, and then I'll see if you guys are crybabies.
B
There's video.
D
Okay, fair, Fair. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
A
Fair.
B
Why have you not seen that, Mr. Producer?
D
I've seen.
C
All right, you know what time is that, boys?
A
Yes. We just talked about.
C
Okay, it's freezing time. Come on.
D
Here we go.
A
All right. We're gonna put our hands in this water. Oh, wow. I didn't even put it in.
C
Put it now, now, now, now for the entire song.
A
Come on, come on.
D
Okay, here we go. Here we go. Both hands. Okay, hold on. Let me take my ring off.
A
Oh, come on.
D
I don't want my ring.
B
I don't want. All right, here it is.
A
Frostbite.
D
Okay, that's cold.
C
I don't care.
D
That's really cold.
B
Holy.
A
I'm telling you, this sucks.
C
I know, bro. You're still going.
A
All right. Does anybody have anything to say about hockey? Currently, no. This. Oh, the desk is. The desk is. Good Lord.
D
The panthers giving up 20 shots to the Avalanche in the first period was a really bad idea.
A
Yes. That's not good. Give up a goal in the first five seconds, you give up. How long are gone? I don't know.
D
Oh, my God.
A
All right. All right, everybody. I don't think it's been a minute. Oh, my computer.
C
So that was your first time?
D
Oh, my God, my hands are terrible.
C
I am so glad that everybody got to. Hey, get off of there.
A
Why? Has it been a minute?
C
Yeah, it has.
B
More than a minute.
A
It's been more than a minute.
D
Yeah.
A
Always sure. He's been.
D
Oh, my God, my hands are so cold.
C
What are you trying to do? To prove something?
A
Yes, I'm trying to prove a point that I'm a man. I'm a man, everybody.
C
You're 40. I'm a man.
A
I'm 40. All right, my hands are out now.
B
All right. That was terrible.
C
Okay.
A
All right. I'm drying my hands off because I can't touch a large fluid. All right, it is time for puck lockets brought to you by DraftKings. DraftKings. The Crown is yours, David. You can go ahead and try to win people money even though we haven't yet.
B
Thanks for that, Roy.
A
Sorry.
B
Yes, we are. This is going to be the week for puckluck. I have a good, good feeling that we're going to hit it this week. This week. There's only two games tonight, though, so we had to get a little selective. First off, we're gonna do Chicago, the Blackhawks, Roy's. You love the Blackhawks.
A
Yeah, I love the Blackhawks.
B
They're in St. Louis.
A
Second favorite team.
B
They're in St. Louis. Tonight we're going to take Tyler Bertuzzi to go over his shots of one and a half. He's hit that in five of his last six, in eight of his last 10, in 13 of his last 16. He also had four shots on five attempts when Chicago played in St. Louis earlier this season. And then we're going to take the Chicago moneyline from that game. The Blackhawks haven't been playing that well. Lately. But they are fresh off an impressive three nothing win over the Rangers earlier this week. And St. Louis is playing on the second end of a back to back. Playing for the third time in four nights. The Blues have also lost each of their last two games by a combined score of 12 to 2. And as I mentioned before, they lost earlier this season at Home to Chicago, 8 to 3. Final leg of the parlay. You keeping up with me, Roy?
A
Yeah.
B
Beautiful. Brandon Martin tor, our old Panthers friend has been absolutely ripping puck lately. So we're going to take him over his two and a half shots on goal prop. He's hit that in five of his past six. Total odds on this parlay this week is plus 5.04. So go make yourself some money. I'll be riding with you. Let's do it.
A
Roy, I cannot feel my hands. It is time.
B
You're tough guy for the hockey.
A
Sorry.
C
Stat of the week.
A
See now when you point at me and you made me think like you flipped the thing the hockey.
D
Hey, guys.
C
Hi.
A
We were just talking to you. What are you doing?
D
That's my thing.
B
Okay.
D
Not as analytical this week, boys. This one's pretty simple. I heard this one on what chaos yesterday and I'm updating it after last night's game. Nathan McKinnon has been involved in 445 on 5 goals this season. The Seattle Kraken have 425 on 5 goals this season.
A
Wow.
D
That guy's pretty good. Yeah, that guy's pretty good. And that team is pretty good.
B
Send the heart ballot now.
D
Yeah, I don't think there's any competition. It's him and McCarr right now. Like it's. It's the two teammates battling it out. He has been unbelievable this year. That team has been unbelievable this year. And that train kept on rolling last night in Denver. They are. They feel unstoppable. We'll see how it, you know, goes come playoff time. But that team is pretty, pretty exceptional right now.
A
All right, it is time for Rosa in un minuto. Rosie, go ahead.
C
Come on, kids. Let's get this started.
A
All right, it's time for Rose in a minute. Rosie, go ahead.
C
Hey, kids. There's one minute of hockey with Rose and this week we're heading to Toronto where everything is intense, even when they lose. The Maple Leafs started the week with a 21 loss. Montreal. Cole Caulfield scoring. The regulations and the shootout. And at this point, it's clearly personal. Toronto tight, but once again came up short. Then came a calm and a miracle net. Dennis Hilbert earned his first NHL shot out a stopping 25. 9 shots and 20 win with Tampa Bay shut out Toronto. Toronto shut out Kucherov and bright end point. Nobody saw that coming. Nope. And let's keep it rolling. But the week ended with a lux drama again. The San Jose the leafs were up 20 and still lost 32 overtime. Warnerberg scored a winner and Toronto went back to doing what it does best, suffer. Yeah, that said Austin, Matthew keeps making history. He's now seven goals away from passing Matt Sudon at the franchise all time leading scorer. So to finish with a week with one win, two loses, a ton of talent, ton of noises and the same suspense as always. This was one minute of factor with Ross. Your weekly week up of puck passion, a little bit of chaos.
A
All right, it is time for wins and fails of the week. It's presented by Jagermeister Servicota. Don't serve it at all, Jagermeister. Damn, that's cold. For more visit jagermeister.com Drink responsibly. Dave, what's your win?
B
My win of the week. It's very visual. It's beautiful. Earlier this week, the other night, the Rangers were in Chicago. There's no audio for a matchup of original six franchises.
A
That's right. There's no audio.
B
Rose. That's right, Rose. Thank you for that behind.
A
It's just B roll into.
B
There is no audio on my win of the week because all you got to do is use your eyes and.
A
Are you hand still cold?
B
Why is it every time I start talking about I've been sick.
C
I'm so sorry, I've been sick. Keep going, please.
B
All right. Can I, can we get the picture up please, that I've been talking about? Look at that. Wow. They're both wearing dark colored jerseys. Road jerseys, home jerseys, whatever time frame you're in red and blue. We've seen it a couple of times this year where team each team has worn their color scheme jersey, the NHL has come out and said they're okay with it. Hopefully we see more of it. I think it's amazing. I love it. It's beautiful on the eyes.
D
They're encouraging this, apparently, the NHL. I read yesterday that they're encouraging more color on color matchups including the stadium series, which we'll talk about later.
A
Yes, we can agree on that. Dark versus dark. Excellent. All right. My winner of the week belongs to people with punchable faces. The Athletic did their players serve survey. They do it every year. And one of the questions was who has the most punchable face. Now, take a look at this. At one is Nick Cousins. We all know that. Number two is Brad Marchand, and number three is Matthew Tkachuk. All right, so we have one former Panther, we have two current Panthers. Another Panther, Aaron Egblad, received votes. And on that list as well is Sam Bennett.
B
So for the top seven, are Panthers related.
A
Yes. That's the style of play that has gotten the Panthers three straight conference championships and two straight Stanley Cups.
B
Yeah, I think Nick Cousins is, like, been on the top of this list a couple of times. I don't think this is the first time. I think it happened when he was down with the Panthers, too.
A
No, no, you're right. And if you are the former Arizona Coyotes, you know, he has a punchable face.
B
Oh, yeah.
A
Yeah.
E
Ethan.
D
Oh, I guess I'm next. Okay.
F
My.
A
I mean, that's what usually is. Usually. Usually Rosie, me and you, and then Rosie got it.
D
All right, we got to go quick.
B
The.
D
My win of the week is this unreal assist from this mighty mite. Look at this. Falling down the Ovechkin to his buddy who. I mean, great finish here, man. I mean, this is going like upper 90, top shelf, where Mrs. Moeller keeps a peanut butter. I mean, that is an awesome play.
B
Watched him get taken down. No call love right there.
D
I love the Mighty Mites game at the Panthers. Like, during the intermission when the little kids run around there, it's hilarious.
A
They get the go horn. That's. That's awesome. If you're a mite and you're playing in a game in the NHL arena and they play that, they blast that goal horn for you when you score. Oh, I can't imagine. Rosie, what's your win?
C
My win of the week goes. This is a spoiler, so if you haven't watched Stranger Things, just take it off. My win of the week goes. Episode four of Stranger Things. The Sorcerer.
B
Yeah, Will.
C
My God.
A
Yeah, Will.
C
We were not expecting. Well, I was expecting it, but we were not expecting it that soon.
B
Did not see that coming. That was really.
C
You can go through your fails now.
A
Sure, Dave. What's your fail?
B
Other than how excitedly I was texting Rose when I watched that episode the other day?
A
I don't understand what you mean.
B
My fail of the week. Earlier this week, on the same night, there were two major defensive fails that incurred in two different games in literally the final second of each that cost that team a point, and in one case, two points. In Pittsburgh, Erik Carlson used his glove to knock in a shot from behind the net by Bennett seneca with a tenth of a second on the clock. Roy, 0.1.
A
Buzzer beater.
B
0.1. Dude. And then Anaheim went on to win that game in a shootout. Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I can't believe his own defenseman did it. Yuck. A couple hours later.
A
Hate that, man. I hate it.
B
A couple hours later In Edmonton, Connor McDavid scored with exactly one second left to tie Buffalo at three. A game that the Sabres led three to nothing after two periods.
A
I mean, you come to expect that with Buffalo, my third favorite team.
B
I must have been betting on them.
A
Yeah, you must have been.
B
I don't even want to talk about last night.
A
You haven't learned your lesson yet. You don't bet the Sabres and you don't bet the Sharks.
B
No, I. No, I don't learn anything anyway. So my fail of the week actually ties into Rose's fail of the week.
C
Yeah, my fail of the week ties there because one second left and McDavid scores. And then they still went home with a loss. They did not cash in. So I think the Edmonton lawyers are my fail this week.
A
Okay, well, there you go. My fail the week goes to skate blades. Because we have been seeing this often. One Fogle, who plays for the Kings, currently already had a broken stick, right? He had a broken stick. Now he has no stick and he comes up to try to block a shot and he pulls away and ends up hitting the skate and the skate blade comes off. So now he is forced, because you can't skate on one blade, to crawl to the bench. What a disaster.
D
I love this image of the play just going on as he's just crawling.
B
Why have we not seen this practice, though? Like, this happens all the time, as you said. But they should be practicing getting off the ice fast when you lose a skate blade like this should be a drill because it happens so often. Like. Right. Am I wrong? Like, they should be practicing. They're used to skating in all their deer. Are they used to crawling in all their deer? I don't think so.
A
So you're going to have to push on with one knee on the other.
B
Or get another guy to grab that blade and just push you off like a lawnmower.
A
But then you have to. Then it's just the bench.
B
There's got to be better ways than having a dry crawl across the ice like an idiot.
A
Going across the ice on that one. That must have been a disaster.
B
He couldn't have felt very cool.
A
Scared. Ethan, what's your feel?
D
My Phil comes from that Edmonton Buffalo game we mentioned earlier, Evan Bouchard, he's always there for us when we need him. Look at this turnover. Tate Shompton just steals the puck right off of his stick, finishes right out in front. I mean, this is the kind of defense that's going to be playing in front of Cherson Jariel. So good luck, Edmonton. Have fun with that. Good luck, Tristan Jari. I'm sure it'll be the same as playing behind Eric Carlson and Chris Letang and Sidney Crosby and Evgeny Malkin. I'm sure that playing behind Evan Bouchard and Darnell Nurse will be the same as that. Have fun with that. Good luck, Edmonton.
A
That's the kind of like the defense on the island. As you remember, Tony d' Angelo with that just a disastrous turnover. That was my fail last week. Yeah, that was a straight up pepperoni pizza, man. Yeah. With extra cheese.
B
Well done.
A
All right. If you are watching on DraftKings Network, we have Jordan McPherson. He writes for the Miami Herald. He is the Florida Panthers beat writer. We are going to talk Panthers with him in a little bit, but he's going to create some scenarios that we are going to argue about and that is coming up next. So, yeah, most likely we are going to end up being angry and yelling at this.
B
Keep the frozen water away from me.
A
Yeah, my hands are starting to warm up. I'm starting to feel better.
B
So, yeah, tough guy.
A
All right, you can listen to that interview and watch that interview on YouTube and on the audio podcast. Jordan McPherson is next.

Jonah McPherson of the Miami Herald joins us here today. We were talking about Panthers in a little bit, but you have some scenarios for us that most likely will have us yelling at either you or Ethan.
E
Yeah, probably.
D
You guys always yell at me.
A
Yeah.
E
And again, these are all the usual, like, press box banters. David and I, basically, every time we're in the press box, just.
B
Yeah.
E
Random conversations that.
B
Whether you yelling at me for not cheering in the press box.
E
Well, yeah, that too.
A
Yeah. I mean, when money's on the line, you know, they want the stuff. No, that. That was the Oxygen Express box.
E
I was not.
D
Totally acceptable. Totally acceptable.
E
I have no. I was not physically there for that one. So I will just abstain from that.
D
By the way, I've known Jordan the longest of any person in this.
A
Why are you bringing.
E
Well, that's only because. Jeremy. Tashay isn't here.
A
No, forget Ethan.
D
But gators stick together, man. That's why.
A
Stop. Shut up. Go ahead.
E
All right.
B
Territorial, my friend. Yeah.
A
All right.
E
So the first one, which David and I again, I have this argument with David or conversation David almost every time when a puck hits the post, puckets, and that's something. But it's not counted as a shot on goal despite it hits the goal. But it's not a shot on goal.
B
Yeah, it's literally a shot on.
D
It's ridiculous. It's the most ridiculous thing. It's literally a shot on goal.
B
Somebody should get credit for that.
A
Well, okay, now there's. I know why you're complaining about it. It's the same thing that I'm going to complain about because this is money. These go. I mean, if you are betting on shots for a player problem, obviously, if you hit the post and then all of a sudden you come up one shot short of getting paid.
D
I have a theory. I have a theory. The reason this is not a shot on goal is because the stat keepers are lazy and they don't want to have to also keep a stat for unsaved shots because it shouldn't count as a save because the goalie didn't make the save. It hit the post, but they don't want to keep the stat unsaved shots, so they just leave it as shots on goal. Doesn't the goalie has to actually Make a save.
A
Well, your theory is kind of busted if you think about advanced metrics with Corsi and Fenwick. So you're betting shot attempts and of course the shots are unblocked.
D
So that theory is.
B
That could be a third one, though. Like they could start keeping track of shots off post.
A
So what are you going to name it?
B
Well, I mean, shots off post.
D
Shots off post.
E
NHL.com, they do sort of have it when they break down missed shots. They do miss wide, miss high.
B
Yes.
E
Miss net or miss post.
B
This isn't a miss exactly.
E
Yeah, well, it's classified as a miss now because it's not a shot on goal by their.
B
But it's not a myth.
E
I know.
G
Yes.
D
See, as a goaltender, you should love this, Dave, because it keeps less track of how many shots have gotten by.
B
Because I love my goal posts. They're my friends.
A
It's not going to affect percentage. It's not going to affect the goals against average unless you go a bar down or something. But yeah, I mean, come on, man.
B
Well, but you just brought up an interesting point. It's not just pucks off post. It shots off post. It's shots off post and in shots off post and out shots off posts that create rebound opportunities. Like we're creating a whole nother thing of analytics here.
D
A shot that goes off the bar and in counts as a shot on goal. So why should a shot.
A
Because it's a goal.
D
Right?
A
But then.
D
But if it.
A
If.
D
If it's one inch this way, it doesn't mean that it should count as a shot on goal versus being one inch that way.
A
Wow, that is discuss.
B
You know, who gets credit off a deflection? Like, there's.
D
We are in the weeds, boys.
A
This is inside hockey, ladies.
D
Inside hockey.
A
All right, you have another scenario?
E
I have a couple other. But again, I don't think anything's going to top that one.
D
Just.
E
I felt like we hit the gate as hard as we could.
B
No, like, looking at your list, I see some. Some piss and venator that could be coming.
E
Yeah, a couple other ones. Roy and I have discussed this one. When a player gets called for embellishment, why does the original call, the original penalty, still stand?
A
Yeah, that is true.
B
Now, if it's not the automatic.
A
If it's a tripping call and the referee is looking straight at the trip. Now, if it's an actual trip, I can understand them. I can understand the referee calling a trip. But if it's not a trip and just a dive, that should not Happen.
E
But if it's an actual trip, where's. What's the embellishment?
A
The embarrassment? The embellishment is the actual.
D
So there's. I have long been on the theory of you can't have embellishment if you actually have a penalty. Yes. But I was at the Preds game recently and Erod hooked a guy, like, definitively, but he really sold it. I can't remember which player it was really sold it. And I'm like, okay, now I see how you can have a penalty and embellishment on the same play.
B
Definitely a sliding scale. But I've seen plays where, like, a guy just. It's like, you know, like soccer, where, like, nothing happens but a guy is on the ice. Like he just got shot.
E
Yeah.
B
Or.
E
Yeah, flopping. Whether it's soccer or basketball or.
B
Yeah. No, for sure the flopping exists. It does not have to be a penalty. I cannot remember ever seeing embellishment called by itself.
A
Yes.
B
I cannot recall that happening once.
A
I. It must have happened during a Panther.
E
And we're probably trying to burn it out of our memories.
A
But yes, you know, what penalty you don't see that on? You don't see it on roughing. Like, you see somebody get punched in the face with a glove.
D
When you get punched in the face, you get punched in the face.
A
Or it didn't get punched in the face, but the person, the player ends up yanking the head back.
B
Yeah. They make a movie about that with Nicholas Tage. Like a prize fight. Snake Eyes.
A
Snake Eyes.
B
Anybody? Anybody?
A
Yes. Gary Sinise.
D
Yes.
B
Thank you.
A
Yes. Yes. Like a rain. It was a rain. There was rain outside on, like a hurricane.
B
Some kind of rain store. There's a prize fight. The. The guy took a dive. Replay showed he took a dive and then somebody got shot in the rain. It was a crazy movie. And Gary Sinise, of course, was the bad guy. Spoiler alert.
A
Oh, thanks a lot. And thanks. Thanks for that.
B
But no, it's just, you know, typical good 90s movie. Nicholas Cage. Phobe should have been a Superman.
A
Do you have another scenario then?
E
The other two are sort of revolving. Both just sticking with the penalty part. A team that commits a penalty. The four who are still on the ice after the penalty should take that first shift on the pk.
B
Like icing.
E
Exactly.
B
I like it. So if, like, player, like. Like Matthew Tkachuk, for example, somebody you'd never see on the pk, if he's out there for a penalty. Yeah, he starts the penalty kill.
A
You have the fourth line out there. Yeah.
B
It's up to the team to clear the zone.
E
Fourth line, third pair. Uvis Blinsk takes a penalty is your fourth line and Petrie are your. Are that first shift. You have to hope you can. You have to hope you clear that puck right away and get to the bench.
A
That would be a disaster, man.
B
No, but this, this could make things more interesting.
A
I like it.
B
And it may. It will force teams to have everybody practicing. Pj.
E
Not just, not just, not just having your rotation of five to six forwards in your top four defenders.
B
We are changing hockey practices right here, right now.
A
We're.
B
We're crawling drills. Okay.
A
Crawling drills. When you don't have escape blade.
B
How not to embellish.
A
Yeah.
B
Now everybody's in on the pk.
A
Yes. Everybody's in. Like that practice is definitely going to be different. How you construct lines is going to be different. That. Yeah. Yeah.
B
This reminds me of something we were talking about earlier. Like why have pregame warm ups not changed in 100 years?
A
That's true. Like in fact people, the media rely on these on pre game skates just.
B
Because you know what's coming. Yeah, we.
E
But like we know when it's 8 minutes and 20 some seconds left.
B
Exactly.
E
Just start looking for, looking for the line rushes.
A
Yeah. Hockey is just like baseball.
B
But why can't these guys. Like what if somebody wants to work on accuracy in the corner? What if somebody wants to work on tipping? What if somebody wants to work on face offs? Like these guys should be able to choose what they want to warm up before the game. Why aren't there multiple. Like why isn't it more loosey goosey? Like you see the players out there talking to their families, having fun with kids throwing puck. So clearly it's not a super serious situation. Why have we not changed warm ups in a billion years? Like, yeah, and I, you know, what if I'm disparaging to my goaltenders because the point is to warm us up. I'm sorry, but I'm bored.
A
You're bored as the goaltenders union.
E
But again, the goalies are only in the net for a few minutes of that warm up period. So keep those few minutes the same.
A
And then.
E
And then go wild again. You have 18 minutes. You have 18 minutes. You don't have to unlock that 18 minutes or the exact same thing every single time. I agree with that.
A
Yeah. You can't forget at the end of pregame skate you gotta have that one guy that stays out there and shoot all the way down the ice.
B
Watching AJ Drear do his thing.
A
Hey, man, the game depends if it's win or loss. It all depends on aj eventually he's.
E
Going to have that chance to have a cross ice empty nut shot.
D
Yes.
E
He needs to be ready for it.
A
Yes. That's practice right there.
D
I like the idea of like Paul Maurice out there dropping pucks for face offs for guys because, like, it's not like the refs unless the refs take warm ups too and they're out there.
B
Just dropping the players that are do it for themselves.
D
Or even better, Carter Verhege dropping a puck for Rhino.
E
Whoever the backup goaltender is dropping a ball, dropping the pucks for face offs in full pad. Give me a Daniel Tarasov or Sergey Bobrovsky right in the middle of Anton Lundell and Etie Lewis Ryan going for.
B
I like it.
D
Boy, we are in the wee.
B
No, stop that. We are innovating hockey right now is what we're doing.
A
All right. Yeah. You know, that just makes me think of Paul Maurice at practice with the. The puck line.
B
Oh, God, yeah.
A
During drills.
B
Yeah.
E
Those first days of training camp.
A
Yeah. Explain that.
E
Yeah, the first days of training camp when Paul Maurice just wants to absolutely. Just. Just tear them apart. He lines 10 pucks up at center ice, and for each puck, the players have to do a board battle, do a lap, repeat it the other way. So player A doing the board battle, Player B, do a lap. Player B with player A, do a lap. He throws one puck away. You repeat and turn. No pucks left. Day one, there are 10 pucks.
A
Yeah.
E
It's a half hour to 45 minutes the first day. And it goes back about five minutes or so each day up until their first preseason game.
A
Yeah.
E
The players absolutely hate it. But at the end of the day, they realize how beneficial is. I mean, look at the first couple. Game seven, they basically replicated what they did on day one of practice to close out their first Stanley cup victory.
B
And the Eastern Conference final.
D
Yeah.
C
Yeah, yeah.
B
Had the book.
A
It is a Stanley cup winning formula.
E
Yeah.
B
During preseason. Just one second, Ethan. I remember just watching Paul do that and thinking to myself, what the hell is he thinking out there when he's standing by himself with nobody talking to him, nobody around him?
E
And you see the smirk on his right?
B
So I asked him, I'm like, are you thinking about groceries? Are you laughing at guys getting destroyed? And he's like, honestly, I'm just looking to see who's standing out, whether it's good, bad, whatever. But I. I didn't buy that answer because he Looks like he's having too much fun out there.
E
And we're probably never gonna get the real answer until after everything's all said and done.
A
And the funniest thing is seeing the players just slide either belly first or ass down to center ice once they get to that meeting at the end of those drills. Oh, it's worse than a basket.
B
It takes a while for the room to open up on those first days of training camp.
D
Jordan, I have a scenario for you.
A
Go for media.
D
From fan to media member. Okay. I was at a game this. Remind the president. You know, the preds game we talked about earlier.
B
You know, give me a credential.
D
But maybe I go to these games as fans. So a couple we. We were speaking about the Nashville game, and something happened at that Nashville game that I've been wanting to discuss on this show. Okay, give me a behavior report here on fans starting the wave. I know you hate the way.
E
Absolutely.
D
In a one nothing game in the third period, it's the equivalent of playing.
E
Peppers before the game's locked down for.
B
The Heat, which happens all the time.
E
Although one wave scenario that I did see on social media that I would be fully supportive of Colorado from the top of the. The top of the stadium all the way to the bottom. And they can't replicate an avalanche.
B
That's.
E
Oh, I would be fully.
B
That's not a wave.
E
No, that is not a wave adjacent.
A
It's an avalanche.
E
Yeah.
B
I'd be worried though, that, like, wait, so what get you into it and topple down.
D
Like go like this? Yeah, like.
A
Like the hands are going down instead of up.
E
Yeah, it starts up and they just go all. And they just go down. They just replicate from the very top all the way down to. All the way to ice level.
B
Interesting.
D
I used to get really mad at Gator games, Jordan, because people wave when we were on offense. And so the crowd would be going while we're on offense. Yeah. I mean, I'd be telling everybody around me, shut the upense. Look at Rose.
A
She's pissed off now. What are you doing?
D
She said one bleep on YouTube.
A
Oh, yeah.
B
Mark Rose, I gotta warn you, I dropped a few F bombs during the punishment.
A
Oh, oh, oh, no. I'm glad you said too.
D
I heard a couple. I heard a couple of them slip out.
B
But hold on a second, hold on a second. I just. I just realized something thing. Are you wearing all that because you knew he was coming in today?
D
Well, he had his jersey recently. And then when I heard Jordan was in, I'M like, this is too easy on audio.
A
Ethan is wearing a Gators.
D
Yeah. Have some good as well be fake gator stuff. And I saw this the other day and it was. I was like, yes.
A
All right, enough of the Gators. Next scenario.
E
Yeah, last one. Just sticking with the pk. I'm a big fan of the jailbreak rule. If you get a short shorthanded gold penalties over. But not just if it's on PK. If you're 4 on 4, 3 on 3, whatever. If you score your. Your teammate gets out of the box. So it's four on four, you score four on four goal, your guy gets out of the box, you get a power play for the rest of the penalty for the opponent.
A
Yeah. As I said before, the NHL hates change. And it's one of the. Definitely not doing that.
E
It's one of the easiest changes and just similar to the other one where your first group stays on there for the opening PK shift. It's going to open things up again. You're going to be seeing more chance from the team that's shorthanded, at which point opens up the. Opens up everything for the. For the rush on the other end.
A
It's better for teams who have an aggressive pony go. Absolutely.
D
They do this in the pwhl, don't they? Yeah, in the pwhl.
A
Yes.
D
I know Jeff Merrick has been championing this. Championing, championing, championing, championing.
A
There it is.
D
This rule. I love it. I think it would be a great idea, and it would force teams like to go for it shorthanded and try and score goals because it gives them a reason to go for it as well. It'd be awesome.
A
David, you have a scenario.
B
It's just something I'd like to see change that I think would be pretty cool. Jordan and I were talking about this on the way to the studio today. I think teams should install mirrors in the away team penalty box underneath the glass, along the boards. And they're angled in a way that every time that player looks into the mirror, he sees the faces of all the fans sitting behind him. And when they look at those mirrors, they see the player's face sitting in the box. And they can antagonize him and they can flip him off and they can do all these things to piss him off. And he can't look up because every time he looks into that mirror, all these eyes around him are going to be looking at him. I think this is an awesome idea that every hockey team should think about doing in their penalty box.
A
So it's not enough that the fans behind. No, the guy committed to fade on the ice.
B
They're very good at ignoring all that now. Okay. Players that's like in drained into their brain. They're playing perfectly great at ignoring what happens outside the glass. But when you bring that into their face, could be a little different.
A
But what about the side of the pony box?
B
No, you got them on. On both sides. It just wraps around.
A
I mean, you think about Vancouver in this situation with the Greenman that they used to do. Yeah, the guys dressed up as.
B
Yeah, I remember them back when Lou was in Vancouver and they were going to the playoffs, Stanley cup final and all that. But no, this is. I think this is a great way to create another mental edge over the visiting team.
A
And Jordan, you agree with this assessment?
E
I understand the logic. I understand the premise. I'm non committal now. I'm neutral on that one.
B
Okay.
C
All right.
A
We will continue to have Jordan here in the studio talking about the Panthers coming up.
G
When I think about the holidays, I think about the little moments with my dog Roma, the ones that make the season feel special. Put a little elf ears on her.
A
You know the deal.
G
Take some selfies, post it for people that probably seen it too much. I love my dog. That's what I'm trying to get at. That's why I'm joining Chewy Claws, who's out here making pet's wishes come true. From November 4th through December 24th, you can share your pet's wish@chewy.com chewyclaus. Jordan McPherson continues with us. We are talking about the Florida Panthers as we enter the Panthers 10. All right, so the Panthers, coming off of a losing streak, finally got together this week as they won three in a row. All right. They lost four out of five coming into this week in a row, all on home ice. They finally took advantage of home ice advantage in this situation with their 11 out of 12 games. Finally, finally. All right. They needed that. That was, they needed that desperately, man. And unfortunately last night they went in and played the best team in the National Hockey League.
B
And boy, did they look good.
E
And they looked like the best team in the National Hockey League.
A
Absolutely did. And yeah, they gave up a goal very, very, very, very, very early. I mean, very early. A minute 45 seconds into the game.
B
It was a minute 14.
A
Minute 14. Yeah.
B
It was like 74 seconds.
E
114.
B
Yeah.
A
Oh, yeah. They scored at 18:45. Yeah. Okay. Yeah. A minute 14 into to the first period. They tied.
E
Yeah.
A
Going into the second.
B
And then it sucks, though, because like that first goal was like the only bad one. I mean, really, that Tarasov gave up. Yeah, I mean, he played the whole game, but he was really good. His Colorado is just like relentless when.
E
Colorado has that speed, that aggressiveness. And oh, yeah, it takes 42 shots on goal compared to Florida's 25.
A
Yeah.
E
And Florida on the back half of a back to Back going into Colorado, very unpacked. The writing was sort of on the wall for this game.
A
Yeah.
D
Yeah.
A
This was like.
D
Like the most scheduled loss of all time. Back to back in Colorado at altitude. I know they went to Park City a few days earlier to kind of try and get used to the altitude. Clearly didn't help Colorado coming off a loss as well. This team is unreal. Like, when you give up 20 shots in the first period to a team, it's probably not a good idea. Not what you want to do. Dave, you sent me the gift last night. What'd you say about that?
B
Gonna have a bad time.
D
You're gonna have a bad time if you give up 20 shots in the first period. And that's what the Panthers did. And Colorado, they just come at you in waves. Like it.
B
It.
D
It's just so aggressive right now. They keep the puck hemmed in the zone. You can't get out. And when you do get out, they turn it right back over and fly up the ice. I mean, there were so many. There were two breakaway goals. Like just so many defensive breakdowns. Just things that are so uncharacteristic from the Panthers. And that's been kind of the story of this season. Even in the games they've won. You know that. That crazy game against. Who was it? Columbus? There were defensive breakdowns in that game that are just. You're not used to seeing from 13 Panthers out in front of the net. Like too many, too much traffic.
A
Here's. Here's the situation though. There were two back to backs within a week of each other.
D
And there's another one coming up. They have, I believe that that lightning game. There's a back to back.
E
Not that one's the weekend.
D
Carolina. Yeah, yeah, yeah, sorry. Carolina and St. Louis are on a back to back. So the Panthers. It'll be the third back to back in like two weeks for the Panthers.
A
So that brings up the goaltender scheduling issue. There was nothing could have done in that game. And I don't think there's anything that Bob could have done in that. In that game. Really. It was just defensively it wasn't great.
B
When, as Ethan alluded to, when they're giving up that many rush opportunities, which is exactly the opposite of what this Panther defensive systems tried to do, you know, that there's a problem. And when Colorado's doing it as frequently and as easily really as they were last night, that was a little bit jarring. And I'm curious to see how they respond against the very good Dallas team. Who's right there with Colorado in the standing.
A
A couple of breakdowns by the way, in the Utah games game that led to a couple of breakaways.
B
Bob was brilliant in the Utah.
D
That save was unreal.
A
Yeah.
D
So you talk about Dallas, Roy. I mean right now 51 points for. Sorry, David talked about Dallas. 51 points for Colorado, 47 for Dallas. If you look at the rest of the league, the next best team has 40 points. That's Carolina and Washington. So these are. These two teams are a cut above right now, above everybody. And the Panthers are playing them two games in a row here. These are two big games and then they've got to go play the Lightning who are red hot on the road in Tampa. And you know how those, those games always are. So this is a tough stretch for the Panthers right now. If they can come away with two, three points in these next two games, that would be really big for them.
E
Yeah, my thing was for their playoffs, my thing was they need to get four out of the eight points this trip.
D
Correct.
E
They were able to get four out of eight and come back home for basically again they have one game where they go back to Carolina, but they have 3, 4, 5, 6. Seven of their next eight games are either home or in South Florida. If you include the Winter Classic. If they can get four, nine.
B
Yeah, about that. That one at Lone Depot parts the home game.
E
Yes, I include that. I forgot about the Colorado game after that. But yes, but yeah, they only have one more road game after this stretch between the 17th and June and January 4th. If they can split this road trip and then take advantage of home ice, which they didn't do their last time with an extended home stretch outside of the end, it sets them up well for what they should be doing. Plus they hope they can have a guy who's number 19 back sooner rather than later as well.
D
And they have to take advantage of this home stretch because they've had such a loaded home schedule to start the season that it's going to get road heavy in the back half. The Panthers don't have a home Saturday game after January 31st this season, so they need to take advantage and the Olympic break could be big for them. It could also be a problem for them because they are going to have a bunch of guys going over to Milan, you know, as long as it works out there as including Matthew Tkachuk. So look, the Panthers only three points back of the Penguins who just traded their starting goaltender five points out of third in the division. It looks like they're gonna have to fight for the wild card here, boys. But they're hanging around. And that number 19 is going to be back soon. Hopefully. Just what they got to do.
A
Thinking about this now. It's a shame that the Avalanche and the Stars are in the same division. You're not going to see them in the conference final. Really is a shame.
B
Well, you could, though. Well, yeah.
A
No.
C
For being wrong.
A
What?
B
What the hell was that?
G
Wow.
A
Okay. Well, Colorado and Dallas of one.
B
Yeah. One of them isn't gonna fall.
D
I mean, there's eight points right now between Dallas and Minnesota.
B
That's the new system. That's why we don't like it. That's why we want to go back to 1v8.
D
Yes.
A
Yeah.
D
This might be the final straw that pushes them back to one for through eight. It's gonna be Dallas and Colorado, this year in particular, playing again before the Western Conference finals.
A
And most likely, we will not see the Kings and the Oilers in the first round for the first time.
D
Put one up for that. There's still one up for that.
E
There's still time.
A
Jordan McPherson, thank you for joining us.
D
Thank you.
A
All right, thank you to Gino and thank you for Jason, for helping us out back there in the video room. I just said Gino.
D
I literally said, oh, it's Michael Fuentes.
C
Exactly.
D
It's the worst. Fuentes.
A
Oh, wow. I did not say that.
D
He's my best friend.
A
I did not say that. That was not me, Mike. That was Ethan. You take it up with him. Ethan Rose, thank you for making my hands cold. And David, brother, I'm sorry.
B
You know, way to go, tough guy.
A
Our last show of the year is next week. We will have Brad Williams, and he will give us his Anaheim Ducks update. So we'll do that, and then we will go into 2026 refreshed after covering the Winter Classic. My name is Roy Bellamy. This has been the Hockey Show. Have a great weekend, everybody.
Broadcast live from the Elser Hotel in Downtown Miami, Roy Bellamy is joined by David Druik (The Hockey News), Rose, and Ethan in the Yoda Studio, with guest Jordan McPherson (Miami Herald). This week’s “Hockey Show” zeros in on the Edmonton Oilers’ major trade for goaltender Tristan Jarry and subsequent NHL news, with lively analysis, irreverent humor, stats debates, and listener-friendly breakdowns. Packed with personality and deep dives, the episode explores the impact of the big transaction, the broader goaltending market, accountability in hockey, and the idiosyncrasies of hockey culture.
On the Oilers’ Trade:
On Golden Knights & Carter Hart:
On Wintry Panel Punishments:
On the Leafs’ Season:
The show balances snappy, irreverent humor with insider hockey talk, rolling from statistical deep-dives (“saves above expected: 9.8”) to exasperated hot takes (“You’re 40. I’m a man!”). The banter is both self-deprecating (on their own bets/fails) and sharply critical (Golden Knights, NHL’s lack of accountability), while regularly riffing on the absurdity and quirks that make hockey unique.
This episode is a rapid-fire, personality-driven tour of NHL news, with a sharp focus on the Oilers’ goaltending gamble, debates over hockey’s stubborn traditions, harsh truths about league culture, and plenty of in-studio fun—mixing stats, banter, laughter, and the occasional rant.
Whether you care deeply about the advanced analytics of a left-handed defenseman, want to understand why the Oilers’ trade is so controversial, or just want great hockey storytelling, this “Hockey Show” delivers it all.
