It's time to represent your country. This is the Hockey show. With David Drucker, the Hockey News, Ethan and Rose in the other studio. I'm Roy Bellamy. This is the Hockey Show. You can check us out on YouTube at the Hockey Show DLS, on TikTok at the Hockey Show 7 and on X Instagram and threads at Hockey Show DLS. We're going to talk about stadium series and the art Timmy Panarian trade with Greg Brzezinski of espn. He's the senior NHL writer over there. But first, we're going to talk about the big news that came out of college hockey. McKenna, thank you. You got it. You got it. Good job, Rosie.
D
Panther Gavin McKenna. Let's be very clear.
B
We'll get to that as well. Gavin McKenna has been charged with felony assaults as well as several other charges. After getting into a fight with a guy that he and a group of people that McKenna was a part of got into a verbal spat. Apparently McKenna punched the guy in the face twice, broke his jaw, knocked out a tooth as well. Some blood splattered all over the sidewalk. It was a mess. It was said on the police report, right side of his face twice. So that jaw is broken. First degree felony aggregated. Aggregated assault in Pennsylvania is a maximum of 20 years and or $25,000 in a fine. This is a career altering situation for a guy that might go number one in the draft this year. He's also in the first year at Penn State after playing three years in junior. So this could go in any direction. David, what do you think?
A
You said he got hit in the.
B
Left, the right, the right side of his face twice.
A
Gavin McTena is a lefty, so I guess that kind of.
B
Yeah, that, that kind of tracks, right?
E
Yeah.
A
Yeah. Like I've been thinking about it since this came out. Have we ever seen a top draft prospect? Draft prospect. I can't even talk prospect. Have we ever seen a top draft get aggravated or get arrested or have any kind of chart or anything like this in the months leading up to the draft. Like, this is. I feel like this is very unprecedented.
D
That Hockey Canada 5 thing.
A
Yeah, but they'd already been drafted.
B
No, they already been drafted.
A
They'd already.
B
Hart was already in the league.
A
This is like. I don't know. This is like going back to draft day when Arian Foster's character got in a fight when he was the FSU running back. Do we take him in the first round? I don't know. That was the only comparable that I could think of. And that's fiction.
B
Dolphins had a draft pick that I.
D
Was going to say Larry McConsil.
B
Yeah, Laramie.
A
But he didn't get arrested. He took a pick in a bong, a face bong mask.
D
That's the most badass thing of all time.
A
That's awesome.
D
Yeah, it was badass.
A
I wanted to hang out with him. After seeing that, I wanted to draft him twice.
B
Of course you did.
D
There are some details. It's been reported that we should. That have been reported that we should add in, which is that apparently the person the victim in this case was assaulting, verbally assaulting or verbally abusing Gavin McKenna's mom.
C
Oh, no.
A
Allegedly. This is unconfirmed.
D
Yeah, allegedly.
A
This was a photograph text message that got.
F
Well, there were.
D
There was also some more reporting from other people on scene. Not just the text message, but yeah, basically. The point being that there's two sides to every story.
A
Even still, though, like, I'm sorry, if you're a potential number one draft pick, you're going to get heckled. You're going to get Raz. People are going to trip.
D
Yeah, but don't go after my mom. Don't go after my mom.
A
Don't go after my future.
D
Don't call my mom names. Don't call my mom a bigger man.
A
Dude, you're some. Some schmuck stranger. Like, who gives a shit? It's just some rando that you're never going to see again. Kids, he's jeopardizing. Jeopardizing his whole future.
D
Kids. Like, 17 years old.
A
No, I don't.
D
And somebody's, like, verbally assaulting your mother.
A
Like, he was with his whole team. He was with a group of people, okay? If he's a hothead and he's. His people know that. Get him away from this dude. Don't let this happen. There's a lot of safeguards, I feel like, that were failed that let this happen, that got him charged. That's fair.
D
But I Mean, look, I think. I think ultimately we're probably not going to look at a situation where Gavin McKenna gets sentenced to 20 years in prison.
A
So he's not going to two years from now when he's scoring 30 goals a game in the NHL. Nobody's going to give a shit.
D
It's a bar fight where he got.
B
A little spilled on the street.
D
Yeah. It was outside a bar when he, you know, things got a little testy. And we'll probably look back on this, and I don't want to say we'll laugh, but it'll just be a. You know, maybe it's like the Tracy Morgan.
C
Worse things in the NHL. Like.
A
Yeah, but they've already been drafted, is the point. Like, this guy, his future has not.
C
Been, is this guy going to go to prison or. No. Because he cannot play from prison.
B
Wow. Be like, that's going to be tough.
A
California Penal League, they're going to try.
B
To protect that man.
C
But he has.
A
Well, we don't know. Like, that's the thing. Like, all that's happened is he's been charged. He. I assume he's been arraigned at this point. But I mean, like, you know, it has to play out in the court system, like, whether 18.
C
Oh, kid.
B
Yeah. He'll be tried as an adult.
A
Young people make stupid mistakes. Like, no doubt. Like, this isn't all on Gavin McKenna, but there's a lot of responsibility that is on him and that's on his people. Like, this. This cannot happen. I don't care. Unless the guy, like, physically, like, did something. And you have to, like, use your brute strength to separate something if it's just words. No, man, that's not a line of demarcation to jeopardize your whole future.
B
All right, don't talk about my mom.
D
Don't talk about my mom.
B
That's it.
D
Like, don't talk about my mom.
C
You have to remember that if he was out and under the influence of something, you lose control. So it's.
B
That's why you have a support group, which is exactly.
A
That's why you don't get in a situation like that unless you're surrounded by your people. That's why guys don't go out drinking alone when they're in the NHL.
C
So that's McKenna's fault.
B
So let's say Ethan and his mom was actually there, Right? And this is coming from a guy.
D
It was the weekend of the. Of the night. So I'm sure his mom was probably in town for the biggest game of the Season.
B
And this is coming from a guy who does your mama jokes on Twitter.
E
Don't.
B
Don't do that. Don't. Don't do that. Not while she's there. Don't insult another person's mom like that. That's just unbecoming of whoever that person was. I'm not saying that you deserve to get punched in the face, but I understand now you kind of do deserve.
A
To get punched in the face, but you don't actually punch the guy in the face like you. There's other ways around this.
B
Well, his future is apparently on the line. And we'll see what the. What the prosecutors do against Gammon McKenna as we get closer and closer to the draft. On Wednesday, the Flames beat the Oilers and a loss that was so bad for the Oilers that you have to think about it like this. Jonathan Huberdeau specifically played in this game, delayed hip surgery and scored a goal. Then after the game, opted out of the season for said hip surgery.
A
I think he scored the first goal of that game, too, if I'm not mistaken.
B
Yes, he scored the very first goal of that game. Mackenzie weaker, had to assist. Brian Lomberg also scored in that game. That was the game winner in the third. So former Panthers got their legs in against the Oilers.
A
Never fails.
B
Yeah. So despite being second in the Pacific Division, the Oilers have lost seven of the last 12. And it's getting to the point where Leon Draisaitl is pointing fingers, and it. He's pointing fingers at his goaltender, he's also blaming the coaches. So it's looking bad right now in Edmonton, and they are heading into an Olympic break. Into the Olympic break. So they're going to. They're going to have to stew on this one day.
A
This is a team that's four points out of first place in their division. Like, have you seen in the last few years a team that's had more ebbs and flows and high highs and low lows than the Edmonton Oilers? Like, holy cow. Meanwhile, Stuart Steiner is out there playing his brains out in Pittsburgh. Yeah, like, Edmonton could use a goalie like Stuart center right now. And I think that's hilarious.
B
Yeah, it looks like it's working out for Pittsburgh right now, man.
D
I mean, we said at the time basically, that they traded Stuart Skinner for Stuart Skinner.
A
Right.
D
Like, that's basically what they did.
A
No, we didn't know what.
D
Stuart got the better version of Stuart Skinner, the guy that the Oilers had been waiting for. Seems like that change of scenery is really benefiting him. But also, they just needed to make a better upgrade. This was never the move that they should have made. Like, it always should have been. Either Jari and Skinner, right? Not Jari and Pickard or Jari and now Ingram. Like, Jari was never the answer. I don't know what they were thinking. And maybe the fact that this has blown up in their face so much is. It's pretty funny to me, to be honest with you.
A
Maybe the goalies aren't the problem. Maybe it's not the goaltenders that's the problem.
D
Talk about. We can talk about that with another team that went to the Stanley Cup Final last year as well, about the goalies not necessarily being the problem, because the defensive structure in Edmonton is looking about the same as the defensive structure in Florida right now.
A
Florida is missing half their team.
D
We can. And we'll get to that later. But, yeah, I mean, there's a lot of factors that go into it and. But you know, I'm cutting this video right now.
B
Right.
D
But as dry Seidel is saying, like, at some point the goal, he's got to step up and make a safe, you know, and I think a lot of Panther fans are feeling that way and I'm sure a lot of Edmonton fans have been feeling that way for about four or five years now.
A
Yeah. You just don't say it out loud. Like, you don't call your guy out like that. Like. Yes. I'm not saying that he's wrong and that the goalies need to make saves. Like, the goaltending has not been as good as it needs to be in Edmonton, but don't call your teammates out like that. Like that. That never ends well.
B
I can't believe I'm saying this, but is Chris Knoblock's. Is he on the. Is he on the hot seat right now?
A
Probably not. The way they run things in Edmonton.
B
I don't know, man.
A
He's not the goalie coach, is he?
B
No, he's not.
A
No. I don't know, man. Like, changing the coach, I feel like that's just like, rinse, repeat at this point. Like, how is that going to fix things?
B
Not much.
A
I mean, such a good job.
B
I'm saying, though, Toronto, they fired their power play coach, and the power plays getting a little bit better maybe.
C
Well, they're still on the game. They're still for playoffs, so.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like I said, they're in second place in the Pacific Division, so.
C
Yeah.
B
And there's a very good chance that they might play the Kings again in the first round.
D
Firing Knob Block would just be another scapegoat for the bigger problem here, which is clearly they haven't had a good enough goal.
A
Unless, Unless I will say this, there is one really, really, really good hockey coach that's out there unemployed right now. And if Edmonton brought in Peter DeBoer.
B
I was about to say, oh, you.
D
Want to, you have a goalie problem and you want to bring in Peter DeBoer? That's the guy you want to bring in. That guy hates goalies more than anybody.
B
In the world, is not exactly a big fan of him right now.
A
Jake Ottinger situation notwithstanding, I think Edmondson and hiring Peter DeBoer would. That would make the league explode. Can you imagine?
B
Yeah. All right, let's go into the Panthers then. They are heading into the Olympic with 10, with 10 players going to Italy and still a handful of players on the roster injured. And that includes Tobias. I'm not going to give you a rough estimate, but yes. And that's including Tobias Bjorn, but who was placed on injured reserve yesterday. So you can add that to everything. And now, and now Daniel Tarasov last night. So yeah, it's, it's not, it's not looking good. They lost five of the last six and are dead last in the Atlantic Division. Not looking good.
D
They have exactly 2 handfuls of players injured right now after last night's game where you add, they have a parasol into the mix. They have 10 players that are currently injured, including their goal, their best player, their top three of their defensemen from last year's cup run, including their number one right handed defenseman and their number two right handed defenseman, who I personally think was their best defenseman before he got hurt this season in Seth Jones.
B
And as usual, by the way, last night's game, Panthers Lightning, complete mess. I put all the blame on Gary Rank and TJ Luxmore. That was a complete disaster. Those two don't know how to officiate. Those two teams, they should never officiate that matchup ever again. They are the worst officials in the league. I've said it. Put it on record. Make that a clip. Put your mic on.
C
Actually, I was talking to E and I was like, do you know what reminded me this game off? It was game three where the Oilers, they lost all their hopes and they started fighting for nothing for no reason. Now we are the Oilers. This time I don't think we're the Oilers, but this reminded, this reminded me of this. Everybody just were fighting and fighting and fighting with no clue. And then you had like Five players in the penalty box. They didn't even fit.
D
Look, you have two guys called up from the AHL to play defense last night on your third pairing in Donovan Sobrango, who's been up and down this year. And then help me out with this name, boys, because I'm blanking on it.
A
Havorka.
D
Nicholas Havorka, who played his first NHL.
A
Not to be confused with the Kavorka situation with Cosmo Kramer and Seinfeld.
B
All right, stick with me here, all right? Because the comparable Here is the 20, 22, 23 season. After 57 games, they are on pace with that season. In fact, they are point ahead. They're a point ahead in that season.
A
Which season?
B
23, 20, 22, 23. That is the one. They made the playoffs and reached the Stanley cup final. They finished the season that year 15, 8 and 2. That is 32 points. That included finishing 611 with Alex Lyon as the starter. That was a six game winning streak. But still, in game 81, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Panthers to make the playoffs. Now, can I tell you the difference? Far more daunting season than that one.
A
Can I tell you the difference?
B
Yeah.
A
Okay. 57 games this year, they have 61 points, they're eight points back to the wild card spot. 57 games, they had 60 points in 2023, they were two points out of the wild card spot.
B
See, that's why this is a better conference this year than it was that year. And this year we got some news, by the way, that we didn't expect happening. This is according to Frank Silas, speaking.
A
Of trying to make the playoffs, Frank Sirabelli.
B
And there's one person you could trust. You could trust him on this. The Panthers apparently have a top 10 protective pick if they go into the draft lottery. So Bill Zito has a decision to make. Do you tank? I shouldn't even say tank. Do you forfeit this season and become sellers or do you continue to try for the playoffs?
A
I think you continue to try for the playoffs. I think that's. This Panthers team is built for that. Whether that's going to happen, whether the, you know, the injuries will allow, I don't know. But I mean, everything that we've known about this team and how it's been made up under Bill Zito and Paul Maurice is that they go like they're going to give maximum effort no matter.
B
What the situation is, especially once everybody comes back.
A
Well, that's the other thing. They're going to have full belief once everybody's healthy. That though, eight points, whatever. We can do that in two weeks. That's fine.
D
That's a big if though, because remember they have 10 players going to the Olympics. One of those players is hurt right now. So we might not even. There's no guarantee. Like, is he on the plane to Milan? Brad Marchand, like, do we know he's going to Milan? Because he's missed the last, you know, he's missed what, five, the last like five games or so. He played that Boston game, but he only played 11 minutes.
B
Are we looking at minutes last night?
D
I don't know what we're looking at. That's not for me to figure out. That's for John Cooper.
A
Five days until the, the men's hockey.
D
Tournament starts to like we actually should.
B
Think about because he's coming back to the team.
D
There's. And there's no guarantee that any of these guys will come back healthy from the Olympics. We saw what happened at the four nations this year. That's not for me to worry about. I didn't ever know I would never want to stop these guys from going to the Olympics. Like I'm not going to be one of these fans that's going to be mad about the fact that we have 10 guys going to the Olympics. I think it's a great thing. The really frustrating thing about this year is like you mentioned Dave, they were two points out of a playoff spot. You know, in 23, with the same amount of point, one less point. They would be two points out of the playoff spot if they were just in the Western Conference right now, if they were just in the Pacific Division. But because of how the east has been playing this year, and this is what I talked about last week, all of these teams in front of them are on fire. They just cannot lose right now. And Boston continues to stay hot and Buffalo continues to stay hot. The crucial games before the break for the Panthers were that Buffalo loss where they blew a two point lead late in the two goal lead in the first period and then they lost in the third period on just a complete defensive collapse and a two goal lead late against Boston. That ends up with Boston getting a point. If you're five points back instead of. Instead of. Sorry, you would be. No, you would be six points back instead of eight points back. Like six points back. You have a pulse. Eight points back with no games in hand is an incredibly tall task.
A
Hate math, but also math on the fly.
D
All you need to do is win four in a row and have the team in Front of. You lose four in a row.
A
Well, look at.
D
So it's like you never. You never know.
A
Columbus has won nine of ten and that's gotten them four points out. That's. That's. That's the Eastern Conference right now.
B
Yeah. And that's because of Rick Bonus. That's all because of Rick Bump. It's time for puck lock is brought to you by DraftKings. DraftKings. The Crown is yours. David, have you won money this season? I don't remember.
A
I. I don't like that you start this off as such a negative place. Like, I feel like that's not good juju.
B
Yeah. Yeah. Well, sorry. Knock on wood, then.
A
Yeah.
C
All right.
A
But we got Olympic hockey for puck luck this week. Okay. So maybe it'll be a little bit, but. Okay. So tomorrow, Saturday, women's hockey tournaments going on. We got a bunch of games. First, we're going to take Sweden on the puck line minus two and a half against the host country, Italy. I think Italy's getting some juice after a big win against France in their opener. So I think I'm going to take Sweden. I think Sweden's going to take care of business. Germany, we're also going to. This is all puck line. Germany, we're going to take plus one and a half against Japan. Japan squeaked by France in their opener while Germany put up a good fight against Sweden even though they lost four to one. I think Germany's at a better team overall. So I'll take Germany with the goals against Japan. And then look, we're all USA supporting here. We're going to take USA against the Finnish team. That's sick. USA's favorite to win gold, Roy. They looked really good in their opening win over Chechnya, and Finland hasn't played yet because the half the team has the norovirus or norovirus or whatever it's called. So, you know, maybe there'll be a little lag. We'll take us with the spread, but parlay odds on this one is 428. Nice and friendly. Let's go win some Olympic money.
B
All right, it's time for the Hockey Stat of the Week. The Hockey Stat of the Week. Hi, Ethan.
D
Hi, guys. Panther fans, close your ears for this one. This Hockey Stat of the week, Sergey Bobrovsky, currently fifth to last in the NHL with minus 14.2 goals saved above expected this season, just shows how dire the goaltending situation has been for the Panthers this year. As great as Bob has been, he's an Absolute hall of Fame goaltender changed the course of this franchise. That contract was worth every single penny. A big reason why the Panthers are in this situation right. They are right now is because Sergei Bobrovsky has not played well enough. We can talk about the situation in front of him, but at the end of the day, he is fifth to last in the NHL in goals saved above expected.
B
All right, it is time for Rosa in un minuto. Rosie, go ahead.
C
Where's my song?
B
Well, we don't have time for you to search for. Oh, there it is. Okay, let's do this.
C
You forget.
D
All right.
B
That was Rosa in un minuto. Thank you, Rosie.
C
For those who don't know Spanish, I'm gonna give it to you in English.
B
It's time for Rosa in a minute. Let's do it.
C
Yes. Okay. Let's do it, everybody. I just said that one minute of hockey with Rose and this time we're heading to Carolina where everything is calm. Until it's not. The week started badly. They were up 30 against Washington and still lost in overtime. Yes, impressive. But Carolina said, relax, we got a plan. A 32 win over the Kings, an at home saving the day in overtime and Boosie prov. It wasn't a fluke.
A
Let's learn then.
C
More control. A 43 win over Ottawa with Jordan style showing up like a true captain and Sarah Jarvis scoring twice. And they close things out with a not disturb mode. A 20 win over the Rangers, another shout out to Bybaci and a streak of 10 straight games earning points. Final result, 3 wins, 1 loss, 1st place, 0 panic, and best reminder that Carolina decides to turn it off. The competition is over. Because in Carolina, it doesn't always rain.
B
But.
C
But when it does, it pours. This was one minute of hockey with Rose, your weekly week of POC passion and a little bit of chaos. And now Ethan is going to pick up my team for next week.
B
All right, Ethan, what is Rose going to talk about next week? He's in Rummager.
D
The Washington Capitals.
B
The Washington Capitals.
C
I don't think it's a piece, but okay.
B
All right. Well, there you go.
A
You get Ovechkin, you get Jacob Chikrin.
C
There you go.
D
Who is the real snub for team Canada, by the way? Not Evan Bouchard. Jacob Chikrin should be on team Canada.
B
Speaking of team Canada, Seth Jarvis is now on the team.
D
As is Sam Bennett.
B
As is Sam Bennett. So good for them. Congratulations. It's time for wins and fails of the week. Go ahead, Dave.
A
All right. What should I start with? My win or my fail?
E
Roy?
B
Well, we usually go in order with wins.
A
You're driving, so I just want to make sure I'm on the right lane.
B
I'm driving us into the win section.
A
Win lane we've been talking about. Oh, nice, Nice, Angel. I like that, Joe Angel. All right. We are definitely far field. All right. My win of the week. We've been talking about it a lot today. It's the Olympics and my win is just the US Women getting a huge win in their Olympic opener. The Olympic tournament is here. The US Women are off to a great start. They got the big 51 win against Chechnya. I mentioned it earlier. Haley Stamara had two goals, Alex Carpenter had a goal and assist. Hillary Knight had a gorgeous goal and Aaron Frankel stopped 13 shots. I like that. The U.S. held Chechnya to only 14 shots against. I'm just so happy to see Olympic hockey back on my tv, Roy. I'm really excited for what I've seen so far. I can't wait for the men's tournament to start next week. And I'm just pumped up, dude.
B
I'm keeping my win in that specific game because Layla Edwards is a star and she can't. She had a coming out party in. In that game. US won 5 to 1. Obviously she had an assist in that game. She was a plus one, had three shots on goal. She took a trip and call, but also drew a tripping call. She got first D pair minutes with 20 minutes and 45 seconds. She did very well. She's going to be a star. And eventually when Canada plays the United States, Layla is going to be on the ice facing off against Sarah Nurse and Sophie, Sophie Jock. Which means for the first time ever, there will be more than one black person, black woman playing in the same game in the Olympics. So that is going to be very special. And with that, a shout out to Black Girl Hockey Club. Renee Hess and Fatou Bar was in New Jersey representing the culture and creating space for black women in hockey as they usually do. They were in. They were in New Jersey. There was a video that was. That's going to be played here with FATU holding a sign saying Black Girl Hockey Club at the Prudential center as the Islanders played the New Jersey Devils. FATU was also at Windsor Classic and Stadium Series and helped us out tremendously as the hockey show covered both events. So that's a win for Layla. That's a win for Black Girl Hockey Club and a win for representation in the Sport of hockey, Ethan.
D
My win of the week, guys, comes from last night's Panther game. It was about the only good thing that happened for the Panthers. Watch Gustav Forsling just beat the absolute crap out of J.J. moser here. You have to do something really, really bad to piss Gustav Forsling off and get your ass whooped like this. And he just molly whoops him. I know that things were ugly. Could Chuck maybe threw a little cheap shot at Kucherov? It's about time somebody finally pointed him out and how dirty he is sometimes, especially against the Panthers. So it was great to see Forsling just whooping on J.J. moser. Yeah, things get ugly when the Panthers in Lightning play. Right now, guys, this was the kinds of things that happened.
A
Like you watch this play out like everybody's focused on Matthew Tkachuk and Brandon Hagel throwing haymakers at each other. But if you watch, Moser kept throwing like, not just like antagonizing Forsling. He kept throwing punches at Forsling and Forsling is just backing away like, no.
D
Dude, Wait, so you mean to tell me that the Lightning are actually usually the antagonists and the ones that usually get the Panther started?
A
No, it does both. Relax, Panther fan. Okay? Just put your flag.
D
You see that last Lightning game, though?
A
They go at each other like they.
D
Go at each other.
A
Rivalry. I'm not saying one is more physical. The I'm saying in this specific instance, Moser was going after Forsling during this scrum and Forsling wanted nothing to do with. With it. He's just. Because it's Gus Forsling. He's like the most chill guy on the team.
D
Exactly.
A
But he's also the most cut, ripped in shaped guy on the team. So you don't want to mess with Gus Forsling. So to see him just like, okay, red light, green light. I'm going. Moser had no shot.
D
Badass.
A
No shot.
D
So badass.
B
At least Brandon Hagle didn't get hurt this time. Rosie, what's your win?
C
My win of the week. I hate bugs, but this bug has.
B
Bug? Yeah, Bug.
C
Bug has captured my heart.
E
Thunderbug.
A
Didn't he almost run us over right after he did this?
C
Oh, really?
A
We were walking. Remember we were walking into the stadium.
C
Look at the presence and everything. I'm gonna do that.
B
He did. He almost ran us over in the. In the media entrance.
A
Yeah, we were walking in for the game and all of a sudden we hear beep, beep, beep. Watch out, watch out. And freaking Thunderbug right by Thunderbug.
C
Didn't do his job well.
B
I had to dive in a bush, which we seen. We seen that. We definitely seen that during Gasparilla.
A
That was a common occurrence, for sure.
B
Oh, boy.
A
That was the. Maybe the highlight of our trip was the 30 minutes that we sat in traffic. We moved maybe 30ft. And the best, most entertaining 30 minutes of my life.
B
I wish we had more time to talk about that, because that was crazy.
A
Oh, my God. Dude.
B
All right. Fail of the week.
A
All right. Nikita Zadorov had an interesting exchange with the referee during the stadium series game that Roy and I were at in Tampa. As you guys, I'm sure know, there was an amazing goalie fight between Andre Vasilevsky and Jeremy Swayman that had us all pumped up. I'm still jacked up over it. But after the fight, Zadorov had an interesting little exchange with the referee about who should be sitting in the penalty box and serving these goalie fight penalties. Play it, please, here.
B
What's the ruling? It stays 5 on 4, but the goal is. Can stay in discrimination. Why discrimination? I have to sit in the cold box.
C
Let's move on.
B
Okay.
A
I thought the ref's just like, let's move on, let's move on. Okay, but that's such a good argument. When I fight, I have to sit in the cold box. They get to keep playing like, yeah, well, you know, you should have been a goalie.
B
There was. I'm very confused about this. This rule, because a long time ago, when the goaltenders thought they actually got game misconducts and when they crossed the red line, it was penalties. And I don't understand the rule here. I don't know if it was changed or not. I need more clarification. Maybe we should ask Greg that.
A
Maybe. What was interesting about this goalie fight was that both goalies crossed the red line.
B
Yes. Yes.
A
Which is like, okay, well, let's keep it all even. Like, I loved it. They both took their helmets off ahead of time. They both were, like, giving each other pats on the back afterwards. That was such a great goalie fight from start to finish.
B
Same 40 Nadelkovich, Bobrovsky fight.
A
That one, I feel like, had more anger in it, though.
B
Yes. It wasn't staged.
D
The big copycat.
B
The big copycat.
A
Oh, no, you didn't.
D
Bob throws hands. In like, a week and a half later, Vasileski throws hands.
B
Yeah.
D
The big copycat.
B
It was staged. The league made him do it. All right. My fail of the week. And I say this with a smile. Your words, not mine, Tony D'. Angelo. I mentioned, by the way, it was a win. My win of the week was basically representation in the sport of hockey. This guy is the complete opposite of representation in the sport of hockey. So at this point, he should be a Hall of Famer in the Wins and Fairs column because this fool would be first ballot in the fail ring. All right, so this is what happened during Monday's Islanders game against the Capitals. Nick Dowd, who by the way, is 500 game, had his shot deflected off from the side of the crease off of Adam Pellick, off of his stick, and eventually off of the skate of Tony D'. Angelo. And that goal made it 3 to 1. The Capitals eventually won 4 to 1. And funny enough, Craig Lachlan said on the Capitals broadcast that good things happen to good people, so.
D
I heard that, too.
B
Tony d'.
A
Angelo, I just love that. Like, you never miss an opportunity.
B
Hey, man, it's always on my radar. It's like, like a big bogey. Just a big bird flying into a plane.
A
Yeah.
B
Yeah. He is the fail of the week hall of Famer. Let's book that right now. Ethan.
D
Rosie.
C
So Ethan.
B
Apparently Ethan's gonna last. Rosie. Yeah.
C
No, no, no. Ethan doesn't have one.
B
So you don't have one.
C
Yeah. No. So we're going to good week.
D
The Olympics. My birthday.
B
No. Fails, my ass.
C
Look at Queen Hughes. That's how we all feel this week. So that's my feel of the week. 1, 2, 3. Very slippery, I see.
D
Did you see him fall down in warm ups last week? Just like.
C
I'm so sorry.
D
In the background of Brock Faber being interviewed. Did you see him just wipe out on his ass?
B
Unbelievable. This is like when he's. This is like that funny video of women wearing high heels and bringing their ankles just falling down. For those of you watching on DraftKings Network, please check out YouTube video. Because coming up next, we have ESPN senior NHL writer Greg Rusinski. That's coming up next on the Hockey Show.

Guys, let me tell you something. One of the greatest joys of my life was when they finally opened the White Castle in my neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. I lost my mind because I'm so used to eating White Castle at home when I was in New York. Now I can have all the time in Phoenix, but when I come to Miami, there's no White Castle. So you know what I do? Go to the freezer aisle. Cause right there they got the variety pack with all the great White Castle flavor in there. You're getting a lot of slider styles. You're getting classic American cheese. You're getting jalapeno cheese. And if you're a bacon lover, you're getting that new cheddar bacon cheese sliders. The classic cheese gives you all the taste of a great American burger, while jalapeno cheese sliders give a serving of spicy to each bite. And the new cheddar bacon cheese, that literally brings home the bacon folks, with real pieces of bacon and cheddar flavored cheese. Guys, I know what you're thinking. Your mouth is watering. My mouth is watering just reading this. That's completely normal. You can find each of these sliders where? In the grocery store in the freezer aisle. Bonus. They're all in the same box. You don't even have to oh, I gotta get four boxes. No, it's one variety box. It's got them all in it. Perfect for game day, late nights or anytime you just want something awesomely oniony, satisfying, steamy and unapologetically cheesy. Greg Krasinski is one of those guys and we're going to talk to him because he's our friend and we like talking about hockey and hockey is what we talk about on the show. Because that's the name of the show. The name of the show is the Hockey Show. So let's start with the big news this week. There were two trades that happened before the Olympic roster freeze hit. The Blues traded Nick Buckstead to the Devils for Thomas Bordelo and a conventional.
A
Fourth round pick, the Blake Blockbuster.
F
Huge.
B
That's the second biggest trade of the two trades. The second. The other trade was the Rangers trading Artemi Panarin to the Kings for liam Greentree and two conditional third round picks in 2026. The Kings then extended Panarin to a two year contract worth $11 million per year. The Rangers immediately got shut out at home by the Hurricanes. So, Greg, please explain this trade. Why. Why the Kings? Where do the Rangers go from here, which is probably first round to the lottery? And will the top prospect in the Kings organization work out in New York?
E
All right, Well, I mean, I had a solid 20 in Nick Buke's dad, but I guess I'll just like, trash that.
B
Yeah, yeah, we could do it. Out.
A
Former Panther, you know.
B
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
E
He's a tall guy.
D
Nice.
E
Nice dude, too. So, like, the, the Panarin situation is interesting because here's. Here's how I think it worked out. He wanted to go to the Florida Panthers. The Florida Panthers are like this cap space that we have. It's for this guy Barkoff, who's going to come back and play for us at some point this season. So I'm afraid we don't have any more of it for you. And so then Panarin and his family are like, what's kind of like Miami, but not. And they're like Los Angeles. And so what happened then was the Rangers went to all of these teams that were interested in trading for Panarin and they said, look, you guys all are willing to go like 4 years, 11 million per, maybe even more than that, but you're going to have to convince him that your spot is better than Los Angeles, which is a tough gig if your team is in Raleigh. So at the end of the day, like, other teams offered more money and they offered longer contract, longer term contracts. Washington, Carolina among them. Seattle apparently got into the mix too, according to Elliot Friedman. But Panarin's heart was set on Los Angeles. So it's a one market trade market for the Rangers in GM Chris Drury. And when that happens and the guy has a no movement clause and the guy is only going to a place where he's going to get a contract extension, you're kind of going to take what you can get. And I actually gave the Rangers a B on my trade grade because I thought they did as good as they're going to do in this situation. And Liam Green Tree is a player that has a lot of potential. To answer your question, I'm a little bit worried about the Rangers development team being the ones to tap it because they have a absolutely atrocious track record with prospects turning out to be good players. Shout out Capo Kako. But for the Kings, it's a great move. I mean, like, you don't get locked into a long term deal. You only have him this year and then two more and he solves a lot of problems for this team, which is they can't score and their power play stinks and they needed to have more offensive depth if they were going to ever have a prayer of winning around in the playoffs, which is basically where the bar is for this franchise right now.
A
Well, beating Edmonton in the first round, I feel like is the bar if they can ever finally.
D
Yeah, no, the bar.
E
The bar is avoiding Edmonton in the first round. They've lost four straight seasons. Like, do whatever you. Even if you got to get kicked in the teeth by, by, by Colorado, at least you're not seeing Edmonton again in the first round.
A
Do you find it a little surprising, I guess, that Panarin didn't want to go to like his best chance at winning a cup or. I mean no disrespect to the Kings, but they, they're certainly not maybe a top tier team in the lead right now, but Panarin clearly valued location over victory and I guess to me that's a little surprising. But I'm curious what you thought.
E
It's not to me, like when he was a free agent, you know, gosh, it must have been like what, 2017, 2018, some of that neighborhood, you know, and was leaving Columbus, it was pretty clear that geography was extremely important for him. He in theory wanted to play in Florida, like, like his friend Sergei Bobrovsky ended up doing with the Panthers, but with, with New York on the table, that was an option and he gladly went to play in New York with a big contract and trade protection. In this case, he wanted to play. I had heard that it was important for him and his family to play in a place that they wanted to live and clearly Los Angeles is a place they wanted to live. That's a huge factor for him, maybe even more so than winning. Unless you're, you know, bullish on the King's prospects. Post Andre Kopitar this season. And that's just how it is for some guys. Like I said, hockey players are just like this man. Like, you guys know my bit, his whole, like whenever they resign, whenever a guy decides to stay in Winnipeg, his stuff is there. That's how they think sometimes. And in the case of Panarian and his family, the beach is there. I guess we could say. He certainly ain't signing for tax purposes. Maybe we could put that to rest for a second in the NHL going, going from playing in New York to playing in California. Clearly he's not looking for the old, the old Florida Dallas discount like other guys were.
D
All right, Wish Enough about this NHL. Nobody wants to talk about this league anymore. The Olympics aren't here. The Olympics are here. The Panthers are out of the playoffs. Nobody cares about the NHL anymore. The Olympics are here. How juiced up are you? And how badly are we going to beat Canada's ass coming in a few weeks?
B
Talk about the NHL in a second. What are you talking about?
E
Okay, let's not talk about the NHL. Let's just talk about all the NHL players in Italy.
A
Correct.
D
10% correct.
E
Listen, man, here's where I am. As an American hockey fan, I would be shocked if Canada didn't play for gold unless their goaltending just turned into a giant pile of poo poo, which I don't think it will. Because if Jordan Bennington ain't the solution, Logan Thompson or d' Arcy Kemper could be. I think they've got a better group of goalies than they had in four nations behind Bennington. But as an American who would love nothing more than to never have to think about or hear about or talk about Micah Ruzzioni again and have a new beautiful legend to hang on to, as an American hockey fan of winning gold at the Olympics, I'm a little nervous. And here's why I'm nervous. I think they'll come a time in the quarterfinals or the semifinals when they're down 2, 1 to, like, Slovakia or Finland in the third period. And the pressure of, oh, my God, what if we don't play for gold? And the pressure of, oh, my God, what if we don't get another shot at Canada might have them gripping their sticks and might have them flopping before playing in a metal game.
B
They'll be messing up hotel rooms again. I would.
E
I mean, the Chucks are going to be there. You know, there's a good chance of it happening. So that's my concern. Like, in all honesty, this is the deepest, most talented group of Americans we've ever put on a national hockey team. They should play for gold. And based on what we saw in four nations with a healthy Quinn Hughes, with more offense than they had in that game, Tage Thompson, a healthier Chuck, like they should be. Canada, too.
A
My one concern.
E
I'm nervous. I'm nervous.
A
I'm nervous because when I look at this US Roster, which is incredibly deep, no doubt, I don't really see a lot of championship experience on this roster. I don't see a lot of guys that I'm like, oh, this is. I know this guy can perform in crunch time. I mean, Auston Matthews, Jack Hughes. Eichel, I guess, is one of Stanley Cup.
D
But Matthew Tkachuk.
A
Yeah, Matthew Tkachuk, exactly. But I'm just thinking, like, man, like, Canada's full of gold medal winners, Stanley cup winners. Like, that's going to come into play, too.
E
Yeah, I'm with you. And, you know, you're relying a lot, I think, on Eichel in this situation, who's been fantastic for Vegas this year, and I think is going to be kind of the counterbalance to the way that Matthews sometimes can play in key situations. Like, Eichel is a guy who rises to the occasion, but there's not a lot of those guys on the roster. And I agree with you. That's what makes me a little bit nervous. I mean, you look over at Canada, if they're like, shoulders are slumping, they got Sidney Crosby in the room to be like, hey, boys, I've done this a few times. Like, we don't have that on the United States. And so there's a lot of reliance, I think, on the coach. There's a lot of reliance on how good the goaltending is. And again, like, at the end of the day, is this roster constructed correctly? Because I've been screaming it from the rooftop since they put it together. This is a team designed to beat Canada when it's a team that should be designed to be Canada. Like, put Lane Hudson on the roster, put Cole Caulfield on the roster, put the best and brightest offensive stars that we have in the talent pool on this roster and just steamroll everybody. But instead, it's built more towards the grit and grind. I like to call it red, white and blue pilled from 1980, you know, where they believe they need a bunch of lunch pail guys on every American hockey roster in order to. To win in the Olympics. I would have preferred to have just seen them put the pedal down, flex on how deep the talent pool is amongst goalscorers, and go from there. But that's not the team they built.
B
Gavin McKinnon got himself in a bit of trouble.
E
Yeah.
B
Over the past week. How is this felony assault going to affect not only his draft stock, but his career coming up?
E
First of all, it's like NCAA hockey, just not on the level of basketball and football, where they can't just make this thing disappear like they do for every other athlete that's ever gotten in their trouble. So, listen, man, it's a serious deal. I mean, he's got a felony one charge for allegedly breaking someone's jaw in a fight outside A bar. And, you know, the. The process begins next week. Insofar as the preliminary hearing and everything else. I haven't talked to anybody that believes he's going to do time for this, but you never know insofar as being charged with. With some serious stuff. But how is it going to affect his draft position? He's a hockey player. Friends. Yeah, it can only help. Like, can you imagine, like, someone like Bill Guerin of the. Of the Minnesota Wild being like, keep me away from Gavin McKenna. He broke a guy's jaw with a punch outside a bar. No, this is the sort of thing that endears him to. To NHL general managers insofar as his. His raucous toughness. Remember, like, we're not too far removed from Joe Thornton. A young Joe Thornton getting into a bar fight back when he was just a skinny guy that passed the puck. Then he got into a bar fight and people were, like, seeing him differently. That wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of NHL general managers that look at what Gavin McKenna did here, and they're like, oh, oh, I did. I was unfamiliar with your game, sir.
D
Gavin McKenna is going to fit right in on the Florida panthers. That top 10 protected pick ends up being number one. Gavin McKenna is going to be a.
A
Perfect fit for Fun fact, Matthew Schaefer, 10th overall odds the Islanders had. Just. Just saying it's not unheard of.
E
Yeah, the lottery works in mysterious ways. And there's going to be a bunch of really interesting teams in the lottery this year, including, you know, maybe two New York teams, Florida, a lot of teams that will have a shot at this kid.
B
I'm just looking forward to seeing how the NHL is going to make everything uncomfortable during this. This draft.
A
Somehow it'll go to Pittsburgh.
B
I'm telling you.
C
No, they're in the playoffs. I don't care.
E
Somehow they'll find they're gonna be, like, fourth in the east, and they'll get the first overall pick somehow. That's really funny. I was saying this morning, like, the Penguin story is kind of like, one of the most remarkable things I've seen, you know, and so far as where we all thought they'd finish and where they are, like, we were all expecting at this point to be talking about, like, where. Where they're going to trade, sit at the trade deadline, but instead they look like they're going to be a playoff team. And. And it. It will all be worth it if we get one more Pittsburgh, Washington playoff series. Like, it'll all be worth it to get that. I would be down, of course, but I think Washington's got to hold up their end of the bargain there.
B
Of course. Yeah. Just like, just like stadium series, everything staged. The league is just.
E
Yeah, you think the whole league is kayfabe.
B
Yeah. The entire thing is. Listen. Seven consecutive power plays for the Lightning during stadium series. What is that?
A
It's a fun comeback. That's what that was.
E
It's, you know, it's an undisciplined performance by the Boston Bruins is what that is.
D
The most penalized team in the NHL committing a lot of penalties wherever we.
B
Two penalties in overtime. Two penalties in overtime.
E
You think, you think Swayman was like wearing an earpiece and someone's screaming, go, go, go. When he's thinking about going out?
D
I believe more than they handed them the game with seven. Or I believe that maybe Swayman and Vasileski before the game were kind of like, wink, wink.
B
This is right after the intermission.
D
Bobrovsky fought a couple weeks ago. Let's try and do something new. Wink, wink, wink, wink.
B
This is after the intermission. They told. They went to both locker rooms and told. Hey, listen, I told you guys.
A
Listen to yourself.
D
The big copycat.
A
Listen to yourselves.
D
Big copycat.
A
This was like super D. We're talking. No, we're talking about how this was like maybe the most entertaining stadium series game ever. It gave us a goalie fight, it gave us a four, a five goal comeback and we're bitching.
D
It's not that we're Dave, it's that we're coping because the papers are used to believe.
E
I refuse to believe that the same league that tried to keep John Scott out of the All Star Game is the. Is the league that is now setting up games to succeed on national television. Come on, too much credit.
B
No, they want all the control on that one. That was just fans. This just Is just like Hayfabe. They do not listen to the fans. They want to do their own thing until the fans actually say, do this. And then they finally kowtow.
A
I love the John Scott.
D
That's right.
E
Yeah. It's the next Gary Bettman press conference. All the fans are going to be chanting, bring back Vince. You're right.
B
Yeah, let's not bring back Vince. That's it.
A
At all.
E
No, I never understood that. I understand. It's like an anti Triple H chant at these, like shows. But like, man, folks, read the room.
B
Yes, please, please. Triple H is doing a fine job.
A
Let's not go down that road.
B
Let's not go Down. Greg Brzezinski of espn, he is the NHL senior writer. We appreciate him coming on the show because we love him and that's just how things go. Greg, thank you for joining us.
E
Anytime.
B
Once again, thanks to Greg Rashinski of espn. Before we go, we do have the time to talk about what happened in Tampa and what happened while we were waiting on the street.
A
Oh, that story.
B
Yes, that story. Dave, why don't you tell everybody what happened and what we witnessed while sitting.
A
In traffic next to the Tampa Lightning arena, like during Gasparilla. So people are walking around, pirate outfits all around our car. We barely moved. But it was perfect because on the sidewalk there was two things that were happening that had our attention. The first was a young couple, maybe about, you know, it looked like they were old enough to drink, but they had a fight going on that was going up and down the sidewalk. The drama, the tears, throwing the phones, pushing each other away. It was everything that you'd want to see on a street. Drunk fight and more.
B
I think she actually called the cops and he hid around the corner next to a building.
A
They disappeared for a minute. They came out, a security guard was watching them. We didn't know if they disappeared for some mid fight fun and shenanigans. And then they came back and resumed the fight. I wasn't sure that's where my, my mind went with.
B
Right.
A
But then in the middle of all this, we got an intermission show of these. Was it two or three?
B
It was two, Two.
A
Two women dressed very piratey, kind of stumbling down the sidewalk.
B
And then one big girl, one thin girl.
A
And then between. I don't know if it was Roy or if it was Penyota, but one of the two in the car was giving us play by play. And it was like, up. This one's on the left leg. Oh, wait, wait, she's teetering on the right leg. And then all of a sudden, into the bushes they both went.
B
Yep.
A
Into the bushes they both stayed.
B
Yep. For about a minute and a half.
E
Yeah.
A
90 seconds they were in the bush. It was, it was hard to see them get out, but let me tell you, sitting in traffic, waiting to get to the bar, this was the best kind of entertainment we could have gotten in Tampa.
B
It was like a couple of trees following the forest and all you could do was like, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh. Right into the bushes. So, yeah, that was a lot of fun. Just like the game was a lot of fun. So we enjoyed our time in Tampa. So that is the end of this week's show. It is all Olympics from here on out. For Gino and whoever else. Who's the director back there?
A
Danny.
B
Danny. Danny. Danny is back there as well. Thank you. Geno and Danny, Rosie and Ethan, thank you. You guys did an excellent job. That's David Dwark. My name is Roy Bellamy. We will talk about the Olympics next week.
A
See you.
This episode of The Hockey Show dives into several hot-button topics in the world of hockey, led off by the shocking news of top NHL draft prospect Gavin McKenna’s arrest for felony assault in State College. The crew discusses the impact of this event on his career and the broader draft structure, before moving to a lively breakdown of the NHL’s latest trades—highlighting the Artemi Panarin blockbuster—and the current states of the Edmonton Oilers and the injury-ridden Florida Panthers. The episode is topped off with the energetic arrival of ESPN’s Greg Wyshynski, who provides insight into trade motivations, the upcoming Olympics, and the implications of McKenna’s legal situation. Sprinkled throughout are fun moments from the hosts, Rosa’s weekly “Minute” in Spanish and English, “Wins and Fails of the Week,” and tales from the wild streets of Tampa during Gasparilla.
Incident Recap:
"Gavin McKenna has been charged with felony assaults... Apparently McKenna punched the guy in the face twice, broke his jaw, knocked out a tooth as well. Some blood splattered all over the sidewalk. It was a mess..." — Roy (01:19)
Draft Impacts:
Greg Wyshynski’s Analysis:
"He's a hockey player, friends. Yeah, it can only help. Like, can you imagine, like, someone like Bill Guerin...being like, keep me away from Gavin McKenna. He broke a guy’s jaw with a punch outside a bar. No, this is the sort of thing that endears him to NHL general managers insofar as his raucous toughness..." — Wyshynski (42:06)
