You are listening to the Dan Patrick show on FOX Sports Radio. Hour 2 On this Wednesday, people fired up over Bill Belichick. Did Bill Belichick actually have a good day yesterday? I know he didn't get into the hall of Fame, should have gotten into the hall of Fame, but it feels like the outcry and the reminders of just how great Bill Belichick was in his coaching career. We'll talk to two of the voters coming up. Sao Paul Antonio a little bit later on. And we'll check in with Armando Salguero, a senior NFL writer for Outkick.com and he has been covering the NFL since 1990. And I also, I think that Armando presented the case for Bill Belichick in front of the committee. So he'll join us coming up. Stat of the Day brought to you by Panini America, the official trading cards of the program. Poll question for hour one. We'll clean up that seaton. What do we have for hour two as well?
Seaton
Yeah, we got two of them up there right now. We have Bill Belichick is not a first ballot hall of Famer because this one's from Paul Spygate, slash Deflategate, how he treated the media or Bill Polian got payback.
Dan Patrick
Well, we don't know for sure if Bill Polian, the former general manager who's in the hall of Fame, voted for Bill Belichick because Bill Polian said, I'm not 100% sure if I voted for Bill.
Seaton
You're gonna have to tell the audience because he's winning the poll question right now about 40% of the vote.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seaton
We also have up there, this one's from Marvin More unbelievable. Bill Belichick not a first ballot hall of Famer or Shador San Sanders being a pro bowler right now, Bill Belichick is barely edging out.
Dominic Foxworth
Shador.
Dan Patrick
Okay. Yeah. The whole Shador thing, that's made for tv. I get it. I'd have him there as a participant. You know, there's no designation there like we're going to know on his resume. And I feel bad for the kid because what's he do if he turns it down? You know what we say? Oh, you think you're too good for the pro poll. So it was a lose, lose proposition. It felt like for Shador Sanders, you know, people are still floating, man. What about Dion is the head coach of the Browns? It's not going to happen. Dion's got to get healthy, take care of what is going on in Colorado. But man, when you get some of these hosts, these analysts who they raise the flag, they carry the flag for Dion coaching the Browns. Yeah, Remember, it was all coach the Cowboys.
Seaton
We don't want the package deal.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Seaton
We love nothing more than the coach quarterback package deal. It's like third most popular topic ever. What are you talking about?
Dan Patrick
Yeah, packaging. All righty. 8773 DP Show Email address dp@danpatrick.com Twitter handle @DP Show hall of Fame voter Armando Salguero and senior NFL writer for Outkick.com how did we get to this point? Armando?
Armando Salguero
Well, obviously, Bill Belichick has been away from the game for a year, so he becomes eligible for consideration for the Pro Football hall of Fame as a coach. He went through the coach committee and beat out such people as Holmgren and others. I presented him there and he got through to the main selection committee, which consists of 50 folks, media, former NFL players and coaches. Tony Dungey is on the committee. Dan Fouts is on the committee. Bill Polian obviously is on the committee. And we took a vote and we found out, I found out yesterday that he had made it. He found out last Friday that he hadn't made it.
Dan Patrick
And I'm shocked you laughed when you mentioned Bill Pollian. Why?
Armando Salguero
I can't tell you. I know that Bill has gone forward and backward on whether he voted for Coach Belichick or not. I think that speaks for itself. No, if you're not sure that you did, you are 100% sure that you did. And then you're, you don't remember.
Dan Patrick
Was there any talk in the room while you're presenting the case for Bill Belichick that would lead you to believe that we were going to have this end result.
Armando Salguero
So the way it works, Dan, is I present. And then there's the, you know, discussion slash debate. And in that discussion slash debate, there was definitely of signs that this was going to be somewhat of an uphill battle. There were, there was one voter who said outright, I'm not voting for him. And because of Spygate and you know, he gets his opinion. And there was others who brought up the one year thing, just the fact that he might come back and be a coach again in the NFL after being selected to the Pro Football hall of Fame. That is not an issue for the Pro Football hall of Fame. And that was said in the meeting. So I assume that that was not the thing. I think that Spygate was the factor that we're sitting here today. It's the reason that Bill Belichick is not a first ballot hall of Famer.
Dan Patrick
Can I be fair to the story, the situation in Belichick where I look at his career after Spygate? Could I, could I look at success after Spygate and maybe split this up, that if you're, you have something under suspicion as we move into the second part of his career, he's a Hall of Famer with what he did after that, 100%.
Armando Salguero
In fact, in my rebuttal, because you get, the presenter gets a presentation, everybody, you know, discusses, and then I get the last word on Bill Belichick. And in my rebuttal, I pointed out that Bill Belichick had a higher winning percentage after Spygate than before. Bill Belichick went to six conference championships, a record after Spygate. Bill Belichick won three Super Bowls after Spygate. Spygate happened on September 7, 2007. On September 8, 2007, the New England Patriots hired a compliance officer. And I've been told that that compliance officer who worked for the team through 2025, her sole purpose is, she's a lawyer, was to make sure that the Patriots complied with any, every NFL rule, to make sure that this didn't repeat. And obviously we didn't have another spygate after 2007.
Dan Patrick
You get a letter from Tom Brady and I don't know if you even thought you were going to have to use the letter from Tom Brady, but how did you get the letter? And then you, you present that to the, the voters by reading it.
Armando Salguero
Correct. And oh no, I knew that I was going to use it because if you're going to come to a gunfight, you bring all of your ammunition. That was part of it. When Tom Brady, who, let's, let's be honest and transparent. There were rumors years ago that their relationship wasn't great, that there was, you know, a little bit of a separation there. Tom Brady gave the most full throated endorsement of Bill Belichick that I've ever seen or read or been associated with. So I thought that that would carry weight in the room and I read the whole thing to the other selectors.
Dan Patrick
Do we know the number of voters who, who didn't vote for Belichick? I know that you had to have at least 11. Was it exactly 11?
Armando Salguero
I don't know the number. The hall of Fame would know, and they're not telling. So there's that. We don't know as selectors who did and who did not because the selection process is done electronically and nobody is sharing their ballot, obviously. So there's only guesses based on what was said in the room.
Dan Patrick
Should your vote be made public?
Armando Salguero
Well, so I wrote a column@alkick.com last night saying that at the minimum, the people, the minority of selectors who. Who declined to vote for Bill Belichick, they should speak up and say, why? Because a majority of the selectors did vote for Bill Belichick. And now we're all under that umbrella of embarrassment. We're all. We're like beagles that just went to the vet wearing this cone of embarrassment around our neck. We didn't vote for Bill Belichick, and I don't wanna be a beagle wearing a cone of embarrass. I voted for Bill Belichick, and I know a majority did. Let the minority who didn't explain themselves if they wish.
Dan Patrick
Okay, then what happens to Tom Brady when he's eligible?
Armando Salguero
That's an interesting question, because if you're going to ding Bill Belichick for Spygate, are you going to ding Tom Brady for Deflategate?
Dan Patrick
Have you been in contact with Brady since this announcement?
Armando Salguero
I have not.
Dan Patrick
Okay, Armando, thank you. We appreciate you joining us.
Armando Salguero
All right, Dan, pleasure.
Dan Patrick
Armando Salguero, covering the NFL since 1990. Hall of Fame voter, I don't know how many didn't vote for bill. They needed 11 votes for this. For him not to be elected, you had to get 80%. But I don't know if it was just 11. Yeah. You know, if you start the presentation and you get one voter saying, hey, I don't care what you say, I'm holding him accountable for Spygate. Okay. And then all of a sudden, like you would think if you get a letter from Tom Brady, you know, talking about Bill Belichick glowingly like you, that's one of those where you go, I don't think I'm not going to need this. Right. I don't need a letter from Tom for Bill Belichick. Feels like Armando got a heads up that, hey, you better bring your guns here. It's not a foregone conclusion that Bill is going to go into the hall of Fame, but if you're going to ding him, I gotta ding Brady. I mean, be. Be consistent. I gotta ding him for deflategate. Even though it was silly and it came down to him lying to the commissioner, I don't think it helped him win games. And the amazing part, and I, I bring this up because it just seems hypocritical. I had Aaron Rodgers on after that and I talked to him about psi and he goes, I actually over inflate the football. Nobody cared. He said, I did it for a year. No one cared. So you're manipulating the football. I wanted it over inflated, Brady under inflated. But the crime was lying to the commissioner. That was it. All right, couple of phone calls here. Dominic Foxworth, he is a former NFL player, was head of the Player association for a long time and contributor to espn. David in Ohio. Morning, David.
Caller
Hey, morning, Dan. I got a idea of how Bill Belichick can swing the voters. Just send his girlfriend there with Lunchables and Pop Tarts and you can bribe them and maybe get him in there. So thanks.
Dan Patrick
Thank you, David. Thank you, Dave. Sean in Oregon. Sean, welcome back.
Caller
Hey, you're right on topic there with the line to the commissioner. Look what happened to Pete Rose for lying to the commissioner. And I say that, you know, the greatest coach doesn't screw up an undefeated year. You know, when he lost Eli Manning and the Giants, you know, there ain't nobody thought that they were going to lose that game. And then he lost Eli Manning in the Giants twice, brother.
Dan Patrick
So you, you think because they lost to the Giants, that's why he's not in the Pro Football hall of Fame? All right, thank you, Sean. Donnie in Indiana. Hi, Donnie.
Caller
Hey, Dan. How are you doing?
Dan Patrick
Great, great.
Caller
Awesome. I've been a Colts fan for a long time and I think the Bill Belichick should get in first ballot. After all those battles between Belichick and Dungy, I don't see how he shouldn't be.
Dan Patrick
Well, I'm with you. And you being a Colts fan, admirable of you to look at the greatness of Belichick. And I don't factor in, if I was covering the Patriots and he wasn't nice to me, okay? He's not nice to anybody. Bob Knight wasn't nice to anybody. Bill Parcells, Billy Martin, I mean, I, I ran into all of these coaches. Pat Riley wasn't nice. But you, I mean, you gotta be a big boy and say, okay, is he still great at what he does? And the answer is yes, I'm not gonna. I. You can't be petty and say, well, he wasn't nice to me. And, and I know writers have talked about this Certain guys accommodating, you like them, you like them a little bit more consciously, subconsciously, I gotta look at the bottom line. You great. You're a Hall of Famer and Bill Belichick's a Hall of Famer. If you want to say before you vote, hey, you know, the NFL is, you know, going to bar Bill from first year eligibility with that punishment. Okay. At least I know the rules going into this, like with Pete Rose. But it almost felt like, hey, by the way, you know, he. That told Spygate, you know, keep that in mind. I don't know. But if you, you need 11, at least 11 to keep Bill out. Joe in Nashville. Hi, Joe. What's on your mind?
Caller
Hey, Dan. 57169. I'm calling him because the main thing I'm thinking about with the whole Belichick is that if you think back to Super Bowl 25, when he was the D coordinator for the Giants, his game plan for that game is in the hall of Fame. So the hall of Fame, his game, his game plan is good enough for the hall of Fame. And he's not. The other thing I wanted to make.
Dan Patrick
Real, Pete Rose has probably more artifacts in the baseball hall of Fame than maybe anybody. And he wasn't hall of Fame worthy to the, to baseball.
Caller
I did love, I did love the, that the caller brought up Pete Rose. But like you said, it was known from the beginning that Pete Rose lied. So we knew that he wasn't eligible. If you wanted to do that with Belichick because he lied to the commissioner, then like you said, push his eligibility back a year or five years or whatever you have to do. And the other thing is, we're just so happy, you know, all us Patriots fans Now that we're 60 minutes from the super bowl, because, I mean, think about it. When we hired Belichick, we weren't thrilled about that hire. I mean, we gave up draft choices, but thankfully and Jonathan in Robert Kraft we trust when he let parcels go, we were devastated. And you know what? He proved to be right on every single turn.
Dan Patrick
We lost you, Joe. Bad connection there. And Robert Kraft has done a wonderful job. Hope he gets into the hall of Fame as well. Rightfully so. All right, we'll take a break. Dominic Foxworth will join us, get his thoughts on that big announcement. Also, I wanted to talk about what I thought I was going to be talking about today. The Steelers new head coach, the Bills new head coach, and these other coaching vacancies. Anybody coaching in the super bowl who might be the next head coach for one of these teams. Take a break. Back after this. Be sure to catch the live edition of the Dan Patrick show, weekdays at 9am Eastern, 6am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio in the iHeartRadio app.

There was news yesterday as Joe Brady got promoted. He's now the head coach in Buffalo. Mike McCarthy took over, over officially with the Pittsburgh Steelers. And then you had the Belichick news that dwarfed all of that. Dominic Foxworth, host of the Dominic Foxworth Show, ESPN NFL analyst joining us on the program. Hey G. Here Bill Belichick's not getting in the hall of Fame.
Dominic Foxworth
Dominique, I didn't realize how lucky the Bills are today that we're not dissecting the decision that they made to essentially promote everybody except for the coach and send him packing. And also, I guess the Steelers are dodging a little bit of hell today day also. But yeah, Bill Belichick didn't get in and people are mad. Jimmy Johnson called everybody a holes and then started telling. They started telling on everyone else. Cheating scandals. Did you see that tweet?
Dan Patrick
I did not.
Dominic Foxworth
Oh, I have to look it up and read it to you.
Dan Patrick
Why didn't Bill Belichick get in first time, first ballot?
Dominic Foxworth
I mean, none of the explanations seem like good. The only good explanation is one that hasn't really been presented yet is he's still kind of a professional coach. And like, I don't have any opposition to putting guys in while they're still active, but that's traditionally not something you can do. You have to be one year removed or for players five years removed from having played. He's coaching college now, which, like, he's getting paid a lot of money to run a program. So I guess you could make the argument that he and he might come back to the NFL. And we, we've seen like, Mike Shanahan's a coach who I think is like the father of most of modern NFL offenses and he still hasn't gotten in yet. In part, I think because they want to wait until coaches are fully retired. But that's not the excuse that's been brought up. It's this Spygate stuff and it's explanations for how convoluted the process is. I. Those are really bad excuses for a guy who won six Super Bowls as a head coach, two as an assistant coach and kind of ushered in the generation of flexible edge rushers. So, yeah, it's baffling.
Dan Patrick
Okay, what's this mean for Tom Brady?
Dominic Foxworth
Nothing. No, like, Bill Belichick has just actively been his or essentially been his fullback. Nobody's going to do that to Tom Brady. And I also think Tom Brady has done a better job with relationships than Bill Belichick. And that's one of the things that we haven't focused on. And it's very much that a lot of the voting is about relationships and different teams will promote different guys. And if you like somebody, you're going to be more prone to vote for him. Like, I think that Tom Brady has done an excellent job of promoting those relationships. He's a part owner of a team in the lead broadcaster on one of the biggest partners. Like, I don't think Tom Brady's going to have nearly as much of a as much trouble getting into the hall of Fame as it seems like Bill Belichick is.
Dan Patrick
Okay, why isn't Robert Kraft in the hall of Fame?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, again, I think it's about relationships and it's the Game of Thrones behind the scenes is sometimes more interesting as, I mean, Don Van Naeta and Seth Wickersham has made careers out of exposing some of that stuff that is so much more Interesting in some cases than what's actually happening on the field. And I think that speaks to it. Older guys, I think you get a little bit more sympathy. They're more likely to put you in. But I think often there are people, and we've heard about some of the rivalries that Robert Kraft has had in the league and some of the issues, and that might bleed into. We saw that documentary that he put out. That might bleed into some of the opinion of Bill Belichick. I think all this stuff matters. But people, I mean, it is nice to have all of America agree on election.
Seaton
Right.
Dominic Foxworth
It feels good. It's kind of cool. Remember what that was like?
Dan Patrick
Yeah. Long time ago.
Dominic Foxworth
It was wonderful.
Dan Patrick
Joe Brady got promoted. Yeah. I said last hour, I thought this was uninspiring. If you're going to change and you're going to change by firing your head coach, I don't know if you can keep your GM and promote your offensive coordinator without sort of being the same team next year. Your thoughts?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, I like to. It's often easy just to be like, that was dumb. I like to extend some, like, assumed strategy and intelligence to the owners and people who run the teams. Terry Pula, when he did that press conference, made it really hard to continue to assume some sort of strategy and intelligence. But I think if you. Without them having said this, if you're trying to look for a logical reason why they did this, it's because of Liam Cohen. Like, that's the reason. Honestly, it's like you have a good coach on your staff with which the Bucks had, and you let him leave. And it's something that's happened a bunch of time. The Ravens are a good example of that. Also, Mike McDonald was on the staff. You let him leave, he goes to become a head coach and maybe one of the best coaches in the league at Seattle, and then you fire your coach the next year. Like, that's the only thing that possibly makes sense, is they were seeing Joe Brady as someone who was gaining a lot of attention and sooner or later they were going to lose to some other organization. And while they did present a bunch of other reasons for why they made the decision that they made, if you look at the collection of all the decisions that they made and where they ended up, that's the only thing that makes sense. Either that or they really think Sean McDermott was so bad of a coach, he's the one lone piece that is holding them back, which is absurd. When you also listen to the owner say that the only reason why they lost is because of bad call. So yeah, only thing that makes sense is they love, they love Joe Brady and they didn't want to lose him to some other team.
Dan Patrick
Mike McCarthy going back home emotional. This isn't a typical hire for the Steelers, but he does help. He develops quarterbacks and he can elevate an offense that's been, you know, a bottom feeder for almost a decade now. I know we look at his age, they like to get that 35 year old defensive coordinator. Your thoughts on Mike McCarthy?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, I mean I think it's, there's some incongruent thoughts in that one also where it's like we hired a coach who we believe is good at developing quarterbacks, but this coach seems to want a fully developed quarterback to return, which Aaron Rodgers is. So like that's the part that doesn't make sense is if, and maybe he's just saying that because he has to say it, but if this team is serious about turning the page, at some point I think they're going to have to move on from this band aid situation that they've been doing for the quarterback position. They're going to have to start using draft picks and signing free agents. I don't think Mike McCarthy is a bad hire. Obviously it's a kind of an uninspired hire. But what it suggests to me is something that Mike Tomlin actually did surprise them with this. It, it felt like to me like there's no way that he could be there for as long as he has and not have hinted towards the ownership that this might be my last year. But it seems like the way they reacted to it. He was really shocked.
Dan Patrick
Talking to Dominic Foxworth of the mothership, former NFL cornerback. And next Thursday, February 5, from 6 to 7:30 Pacific, the Dominique Foxworth and friends live at the Strand. Look at you.

Dan Patrick
The Denver Broncos firing coaches yesterday, kind of quietly because we're still trying to digest the fourth in one call. And now Sean comes out and says, hey, I would have gone for it. I would have called a better play. Paraphrasing. I mean you won 14 games and now you're like, they had an excuse with Bo Nicks. They probably win that game and you'd be in the Super Bowl. But like, are these jobs that tenuous that it's like, no, we lost, you're gone.
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah. Sean Payton is, is a powerful guy and he's never been shy about making these type of decisions. I think that there's one way to look at this where you're like, hey, we can always get better. That's commendable that there are going to be aggressive because you look back at their season, as good as their season was. There's a lot of single score games. And while you could walk away and be and feel good at scapegoating the injury to your quarterback in the weather, I think that whatever happened, obviously there's a longer track record. I don't think the result of the season is why they made that decision. And then you can look at the jets too, which also did some curious things that at some point someone's got to.
Dan Patrick
Any coaches, aside from Aaron Glenn.
Dominic Foxworth
I again talk about strategy and I said at the beginning, this is like, I like to extend the assumption that these owners are at least reasonably intelligent in making some sort of plan. It's so hard to put together the last decade of decisions by the jets and find like a through line of a strategy or some belief. Like, we had a. They had a bad season, they gave up on it midway through, and then somehow held every coach but the head coach accountable for a season that they obviously gave up on. Like, I don't know what's happening in that building. So it's hard for me to project, but I know it's ugly. And if I was a fan, I mean, I guess they probably lost hope a long time ago, but I'd be pretty pissed.
Dan Patrick
Cleveland needs a coach. Vegas needs a coach. Arizona needs a coach. Yeah. You want to fill those voids? Is somebody coaching in the super bowl who might get one or two of those jobs?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, it feels like all of those jobs. Right. That's the only way that it feels like that. Otherwise, they've been getting rejected by people that they want.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Dominic Foxworth
And that makes it look even worse. These jobs are few and far between. For people not to take that opportunity is surprising to me. And we saw Mike McDonald. McDaniel. Yeah, McDaniel from Miami. We saw him go to the Chargers, which, like that opportunity seemed great. But my assumption is he could have gotten one of these other jobs and maybe he didn't want it, but given how he dresses, I feel like he's going Miami to LA next. At some point, man, got to go to Vegas.
Dan Patrick
Right.
Dominic Foxworth
Like, I feel like the only other place that Miami, la, Vegas, the only other place that he can go does.
Dan Patrick
Anybody want the Browns job? I mean, it feels like they're, they, you know, they might just say to Jim Schwartz, we're going to hire you because we don't want to be rejected anymore.
Dominic Foxworth
That's a bad way to go about hiring a coach. But it might turn. It might work out. He's a guy with experience in that team, obviously respects the defense, has been great all the way through. But you can expect if they take him off of the defense and make him a head coach, it's possible the defense could make take a step back. The thing about the Browns job is on paper when you look at the way like I one of the reasons why I think the Ravens job is attractive because you have a front office that you know consistently will give you quality talent. The Browns have done a pretty good job of building up this roster. I think you can point to the major decision, which was an ownership decision to bring in deshaun Watson as a terrible one. But like other than that, they've done above average in their drafts in decision making. So it's not that bad of a job. The organization isn't as poorly run as the results seem to suggest, from what I understand. But it's still the Browns and there's still the benefit of having a low bar, but also the challenge of there's really no culture to speak of and people will turn on you immediately because they assume that it's the same old Browns. There's no like faith in the same way that you would have with the Steelers. You know, no one has that for the Browns.
Dan Patrick
What about Arizona?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, that one is a another situation where the complaint that I've heard from candidates about the Arizona situation is commitment from the ownership. And I that's always a big question is what the ownership is going to do for an organization or excuse me, do for a coach to support them. And that's something that's been hanging over that organization so someone will take that job there. There are some jobs that aren't A level jobs and it feels like the Bengals fall into that category despite the fact that they have a quarterback and, and the Cardinals, one of the oldest franchises in football, also feel like one of those organizations that doesn't feel like an A level job.
Dan Patrick
I was wondering about this and may be crazy and off topic here but say Matthew Stafford decides he's going to retire. You're the Rams. You got two first round picks. Do you reach out to the Bengals? What do you think?
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah, reach out to the Bengals and, and offer those picks for Their quarterback.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Dominic Foxworth
It's gonna take more than that.
Dan Patrick
Okay. That's a starter. That's a starter.
Dominic Foxworth
Okay, okay, okay, okay. Yeah, you can throw it at him but I'm hanging up the phone. The Bengals. And you reach out for Joe Burrow for that. Like I think for Joe Burrow to move it's going to require him to force his way out which is not a very un football. It's a very NBA style behavior. You rarely see football players force their way out, especially quarterbacks. But I can't imagine that there's enough compensation where it would not be received the way the Luca Donches trade was received. If anyone moves on from their top level quarterback who's still in their prime when quarterbacks are playing for 20 years. I know Burrow's been injured a lot but moving on from your quarterback, you will lose everybody there's because you are then acquiring a bunch of draft picks in hopes that you could find someone nearly as good as Joe Burrow.
Armando Salguero
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
But you get him on a rookie deal it that it felt like there was a disconnect between him and front office. Not happy. So I don't know, I just.
Dominic Foxworth
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Just throwing it out there.
Dominic Foxworth
It's the dream. It's the dream like Herschel Walker trade situation where you can find. You can set yourself up for a dynasty if you move on from a super talented player at the right time. Like I get the idea but it better work.
Dan Patrick
Dominic, thank you for joining us.
Dominic Foxworth
No problem. Appreciate you, Dan.
Dan Patrick
That's Dominic Foxworth. You can see him in person. That'll be next Thursday in San Francisco along with Mina Kimes, Marcus Spears, Kevin Clark and it's Dominic Foxworth and friends live at the Strand. Go to foxworth pod live.com. is that crazy though, the Joe Burrow thing? Dude, you got two first round picks now. Stafford could come back but if he decides to retire, I don't know. And it felt like there was something going on with Joe. Not happy.
Ad Voice (Wells Fargo Credit Card)
Yes, Marvin, but the Bengals are going to ask for somebody like Puka Nakua.
Dan Patrick
Well, they got their receivers but they.
Ad Voice (Wells Fargo Credit Card)
Need what's one more great receiver.
Dan Patrick
That's true. Two first round picks in Puka Nakua for Joe Burrow. I don't know. It came to me just because I thought, you know what, what happens if Stafford retires? You're going to draft somebody, you're going to sign somebody. What about trading for somebody? Yeah, Paul, it's interesting because otherwise you have to start a search for a new franchise quarterback. Yeah. With a good team. Already in place. Yes. A team ready to win. Alrighty. Well, they could always bring in Jared Stidham. Todd. Yeah. That is something you can do.
Dominic Foxworth
It's not too soon.
Caller
It's a fact.
Dominic Foxworth
That was a terrible, like, little shovel pass thing there.
Dan Patrick
Are you off steady?
Dominic Foxworth
I guess so. I'm not putting it all on him, but we gave them seven points and didn't take three. That's a 10 point swing. Do the math. That's why we're not in the Super Bowl.
Dan Patrick
All right, we'll take a break.
Seaton
It's definitely Joe Lombardi's fault.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, it's somebody's fault. Not the head coach. I love that. I love it.
Seaton
A little too much attention on that one call. Why don't I fire a bunch of people just to make sure everybody knows it wasn't my fault?
Dan Patrick
Nobody's talking about that call today. All these coaches are getting fired and the jets fired everybody. Is Aaron Glenn's job safe? Like, it would be so Jetsian that they would get around to firing him. And all these other candidates are gone. Take a break. More phone calls coming up. Sal Palantonio, hall of Fame voter. I just want to weigh on, on the hall of Fame voting. For me, it's just another example of why horse riders shouldn't be the gatekeepers. And I mean that in all sports, Major League Baseball, especially football, all of them, because I mean, maybe it made sense 100 years ago when he didn't have Internet television. And so you needed some people who could, you know, who had seen most of the players. But it sounds like it should be in the players hands and, and people who know the game, like Tom Brady had a great point about, you know, like JSN keeps his shoulders level so you know, he doesn't tip off his running plays. Well, like what sports raider knows that?
Dan Patrick
Well, I'm okay with, you know, former players or coaches, but I mean they have a bias as well. It's, it's tricky. You need to get a balance there. And sports writers aren't as powerful as they once were. Columnists were, you know, they, they ruled the, they ruled the land. Had to have a great columnist. Now newspapers are going away. That doesn't mean you don't have great writing. But you know, broadcasters, we fought hard to get, we always sat up in the rafters. If I went to the Boston Celtics game, you know, an NBA finals in the 80s, I was way up top. Writers were always down below. We're both covering the same game. But you kind of fight to get a little bit more of the TV side of this. We were just known as talking hairdos. And I remember when I was in New York and I got a real harsh dose of that. Of. Hey, I'm Mike Lupica. I'm Dick Young. Dave Anderson. Like all these legendary writers and columnists. And you're just now. They didn't say this to me. Well, Dick Young might have. You're just a talking hairdo. So you're. You know, you want to get a balance of broadcasters, analysts, former players, former coaches, but you got to be careful because deep down, whether it's consciously or subconsciously, people have a bias.
Seaton
Yeah, Seaton, you know, I don't know if if. And even all 11 people that came out and said that they voted against Bill Belichick because he was involved in two of the biggest. His team was involved in two of the biggest cheating scandals in NFL history. I don't know that anybody would have a problem with that. But the fact that no one is coming forward who voted against him speaks to the idea that maybe there's another motivation, and that's actually super lame. Like, that's what makes you a coward. Then if you're going to say, well, he cheated, so I'm not. I'm going to. Yeah, I'm going to ding him for the one year. I think most people would understand that. But you're not saying it. So now you're a coward.
Dan Patrick
Yeah, I don't have a problem. If you didn't want to vote for him, I. I do want to know why you didn't, because. Does this. Is it applicable to Tom Brady? He was involved in Spygate to a certain degree, but he was involved. He was deflategate. Team got punished. He got suspended. I mean, this was a big deal, and that's cheating, or at least viewed as cheating. So that's where I'm trying to understand, like, what is so egregious here. And really, if you look at Spygate, Spygate's silly, too. Hey, you can film the other team, but you can't film there. That angle. And that. That was Spygate in a nutshell. Yeah, Seaton.
Seaton
Yeah. Like, even if you want to, you could try to remove Bill Belichick from deflate gate, but he was the one up there within like a day or two doing the ideal gas law and explaining how these. How footballs deflate on their own, which is true, by the way. I mean. Yeah, look, the NFL still didn't. They studied those balls the entire next season and never released the results. Well, why was that? They were doing exactly a study to see if they did deflate that way, and then they never released the results. I think that we know why, but he was right out in front and center of that whole scandal, too. So you kind of have to ding him for that, especially if he's a head coach who controls every single aspect.
Dan Patrick
Sure. I. Hey, just tell me. Just be transparent. Be transparent when it comes to the Houston Astros, when they're up for the hall of Fame, when Jose Altuve. Just tell me then. At least we know. And if you had, you know, maybe it was an asterisk by Belichick's name by certain voters going in. We're not going to vote for him. Just let us know. Just, you know, be fair to the situation. Because as you're saying, is there something else involved in this, you know, the Belichick situation that we're not being told? I was told yesterday, reiterated this morning that maybe some voters thought there's no guarantee that Belichick is not coming back to the NFL. And I said, he's not coming back to the NFL. He said, I'm just telling you that the vibe of is he going to coach again in the NFL. I said, okay. So I don't know if they can even agree on why they don't agree that he's a Hall of Famer. So. Yeah. Paulie, Multiple reports the Cleveland Browns are hiring former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monkin as their next head coach. Kirk Curbstreet is gonna be thrilled.
Seaton
God, is he happy right now.
Dominic Foxworth
Todd Monken, dial it up.
Dan Patrick
He could dial up some plays, man. Todd Monkin, he is gonna turn Shador Sanders into a Pro Bowl. Oh, no. He's already a Pro bowl court.
Dominic Foxworth
Continue the excellence.
Dan Patrick
Yes, yes. Gonna make a Pro bowl starter out of Shador Sanders. All right. Todd Monkin. Felt like whenever Todd Monkin was coaching, Herbie was letting you know Todd Monkin was coaching. He can dial up some plays like Spags in Kansas City. Nobody dials up plays like Spags does in Kansas City. One hour to go on this Wednesday. Sal Pal Antonio joins us. Episode Date: January 28, 2026
Main Guests: Armando Salguero, Domonique Foxworth
Theme: Hall of Fame controversy (Bill Belichick), NFL coaching hires, and broader league dynamics
Hour 2 of The Dan Patrick Show dives into the swirling controversy around Bill Belichick’s first-ballot Hall of Fame snub, exploring insider details from voter and NFL writer Armando Salguero. Dan and the crew also welcome ESPN analyst and former NFL player Domonique Foxworth, shifting the discussion to recent NFL head coaching hires in Buffalo, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland, and unpacking what these moves might mean for the teams and the league. The show strikes a familiar tone: candid, humorous, and unvarnished.
Notable Quotes:
Armando Salguero (on voting transparency):
"We're all under that umbrella of embarrassment. We're like beagles that just went to the vet wearing this cone of embarrassment around our neck. We didn't vote for Bill Belichick, and I don't wanna be a beagle wearing a cone of embarrass." (11:59)
Dan Patrick (about precedent):
"If you're going to ding him, I gotta ding Brady. I mean, be consistent... Even though it was silly and it came down to him lying to the commissioner, I don't think it helped him win games." (13:20)
Notable Quotes:
“It's often easy just to be like, that was dumb. I like to extend some, like, assumed strategy and intelligence to the owners and people who run the teams. Terry Pegula, when he did that press conference, made it really hard to continue to assume some sort of strategy and intelligence.” (28:25)
“Anybody want the Browns job? I mean, it feels like they're...going to hire [Jim Schwartz] because they don't want to be rejected anymore.” (34:42)
“It's going to take more than that...If anyone moves on from their top level quarterback who's still in their prime—when quarterbacks are playing for 20 years...you will lose everybody...” (37:08)
| Timestamp | Quote / Moment | Speaker | |-----------|----------------|---------| | 05:57 | "Bill Belichick has been away from the game for a year, so he becomes eligible... There was definitely signs that this was going to be somewhat of an uphill battle." | Armando Salguero | | 08:43 | "I pointed out that Bill Belichick had a higher winning percentage after Spygate than before. Bill Belichick went to six conference championships, a record after Spygate." | Armando Salguero | | 10:32 | "When Tom Brady gave the most full throated endorsement of Bill Belichick...I thought that would carry weight." | Armando Salguero | | 11:59 | "We're all under that umbrella of embarrassment...I don't wanna be a beagle wearing a cone of embarrass." | Armando Salguero | | 27:17 | "I think it's about relationships and it's the Game of Thrones behind the scenes is sometimes more interesting..." | Domonique Foxworth | | 28:07 | “I thought this was uninspiring.
