My name is Brendan Patrick Hughes, host of Divine Intervention. This is a story about radical nuns in combat boots and wild haired priests trading blows with J. Edgar Hoover in a hell bent effort to sabotage a war.

J. Edgar Hoover was furious. He was out of his mind and he wanted to bring the Catholic left to its knees.

Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
That's right, it is the Dan Patrick show here on Fox Sports Radio. He's lavar Arrington. I'm Jonas Knox in for Dan and the guys. You can normally hear us Monday through Friday, 6:00am Eastern Time, 3:00 clock Pacific. We are the show before this show here every single day during the week alongside Brady Quinn who is not with us. But it'll be sticks and I taking you all the way up until noon Eastern Time, 9:00am Pacific here on, on Fox Sports Radio. And you know, some people have said, are you guys, you know, what is this like a Memorial Day takeover of the Dan Patrick Show? I mean, kind of, I guess. I mean that's what our, that's what our job is here. That's what our duty is. And apparently there's another takeover that's happening and it's the NFL continuing their takeover. And the takeover is holiday and holiday action and holiday action when there happens to be another league who's had that holiday all to themselves for several, several years now. So much so that Jason Kelce was on his New Heights podcast talking about how he's a fan of the NFL playing on Christmas and on these major holidays and had this to say.
Dan Patrick
I'm also just a fan of playing on more prime time times.
Taraji P. Henson
Like that's when I'm watching TV and.
Dan Patrick
I like it when football's on television.
Taraji P. Henson
So let's keep putting good football games.
Dan Patrick
On television when everybody's watching. I mean, I think it's just good for the game. Keep taking over all the holidays we're taking over Thanksgiving, Christmas, NBA.
Taraji P. Henson
You're, you're never getting that back.
Dan Patrick
I mean it's, it's the way it is.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
And he's 100% correct.
Dan Patrick
He ain't lying.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
They're never getting it back. Yeah, like once the NFL realized, I'll wait, like this is doable. Yeah, we're going to go ahead and take that too. And then it, you know, became one game and two games and three and it's just this is where we are and I don't know what the plan would be for the NBA. But if you're the NFL. And by the way, for those of you wondering, well, it's just because it, you know, Christmas falls on certain days of the week. No, it's over because Christmas is a Thursday this year, a Friday the year after, a Saturday after that, a Sunday. Like it's going to be a long ass time before anybody can make the argument that, well, depending on the day of the week it falls, it's not great for the schedule and the players. The NFL is going to take this over and it's going to be theirs moving forward.
Dan Patrick
I mean, what else is there to say? You know, Kelsey nailed it. And, and I think you, you, you put a bow on it if it's good football. And, and listen, I look at it like this. During, during the holiday season, the one thing that you get yourself set for during Christmas time, pre Christmas, post Christmas and, and New year is college football. So if we're being honest, I don't think about the NBA on Christmas. Maybe Christmas day, you're right. But I don't think about the NBA. I think about college football and I think about bowl games. And now that you had the playoff, it now makes it even more intensified getting into that, that corridor of, of the year coming to an end and rounding it out by having, you know, Christmas and then New Year's. So if you're putting on a quality football game from the National Football League and that's on on Christmas day, hell, if you put two, three games on on Christmas day that are quality matchups of the National Football League, I can guarantee you guarantee that you're going to have a tremendously large viewing audience of those games that are taking place.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Totally agree. Yeah, I, and I look at it and I go, if you're the NBA, I mean, what do you do?
Dan Patrick
You just keep trying to chuck along, you know, chuck them up like, like Carl Anthony Townsend, hope something goes in.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
It just, you know, like for example, you know, the, the Christmas schedule for the NFL coming up this year, Cowboys, Commanders, Lions, Vikings, Broncos, Chiefs, like all of those are compelling matches.
Dan Patrick
I watch all three, Every single one.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Anything else, Every single one.
Dan Patrick
There would have to be a dope ass bowl game on. And that game, I would even be switching in and out to all the games depending on what the times that are, are playing.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
And I'll be honest with you, if you like, who do you think the two worst teams in the NFL are going to be this year? Like if you, if you had to right now, guess the Saints. Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And maybe the Browns.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Okay, if the Saints and the Browns are playing on Christmas, are you watching that or an NBA game? I'm watching the NFL game. I'm sorry. Like, like, I'm sorry. Just.
Dan Patrick
I don't know. It depends on really. Give me the matchup of the NBA game. If you give me the matchup of the NBA game, then give me what best case scenario.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
I mean, look, I mean if you wanted, you know, best case scenario, you know, maybe it would be a, you know, a Thunder Celtics matchup or no, I mean Tatum's going to be out for majority of the year. So let's say Thunder, Pacers, NBA Finals rematch. I'm watching rematch. I'm watching Saints Browns.
Dan Patrick
I'm watching the Saints Browns. It's. It sounds more interesting. It sounds more intriguing. What, what's at stake in December for the NBA for them NBA games?
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Nothing.
Dan Patrick
What's at stake? I mean we're, we're heading into June, you know what I mean? Like we're heading into June and basketball NBA season is still going. I don't see there being enough importance to you don't. Again, I don't believe the NBA has a player right now or players outside of you being a avid NBA fan, avid sports fan. I do not believe the NBA has the type of player that can drive the viewership the way that you've had it in decades past.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Let me generations back, let me paint this scenario for you. All right? Just imagine the NBA to counter program does that rematch of the NBA Finals and it is Pacers and Thunder and the NFL. Just this is pure example. This is not the matchup, but this is the, the worst. If you had to pick the two worst teams in the league and the NFL rolls out Tyler Shuck versus Dylan Gabriel and would do better numbers than the NBA showing a rematch of the Finals.
Dan Patrick
But I think it classically comes back to the way the popularity has been grown and the way the popularity has been built. The National Football League has always made it a point to make the shield the most important branding that takes place, not to mention guys wear helmets. So you can look at a matchup, but you'll ultimately find the reasons why that is an intriguing matchup, even if it's two trash teams. And it's also because the NFL doesn't play nearly as many games as the NBA. So it's almost these days, which is one of the best things that the NFL could have ever done is these days they've made every game matter more and they're continuing to figure out ways to reward the teams that, that take every single game and every single week. Take it seriously. Like, you know, you're not sitting there like ah, you know, well, there's more games to be played. We, we will be fine. It's almost taking on the same type of characteristics in some ways in regard as, as college football. And that's the reason why we love college football so much, historically speaking, of course, is that you couldn't lose. If you lost, that meant that your season was in jeopardy, jeopardy after one loss. Now you can lose one, maybe even two games and get into the College Football Playoff and who knows what happens there. We had a two loss team win the championship this year, correct?
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Yeah. So at the end of the day, I think that there's a level of, of intensity and the, the Shield does an excellent job of creating this intensity and passion for consumption of, of the talent that's going out there on the days that they're playing. And you're right, you only get so much time with the game like people be going through and I'm one of them. We be going through like, like postseason, like fallout, like, like withdrawal, like I, I did. I love the fact that the players get an opportunity to play in the UFL and try to make it into the NFL. It does not quench my thirst for football, NFL, college. It does not. It still feels like there is a departure from what life should be like when football season is not here. And to be, to have been able to create that type of buy in from a consumer, man, that's an ultimate product. And it's very hard, it's very hard to fight your way back from, from that type of established fandom and viewership and buy in to a, a particular league, a particular sport.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
So there's this old saying that nobody cares about your fantasy football team. Like it just in, in general when, when people start complaining about their fantasy football team, it's what like man, nobody cares. I, I don't want to hear about your fantasy team. You know who does care about your fantasy team? The NFL. Because I think fantasy football is as much to do with this as anything because it's basically gambling. And it was the, the, I guess the, the show before the gambling show started was fantasy football. So that was sort of your appetizer to get you into what gambling could look like in the NFL. These games late in the season like that on a Christmas, you could look at a Saints Browns matchup just for example. That's not going to be the matchup because the NFL realizes those teams are terrible. That's why New Orleans and Cleveland don't have a primetime game. But you could set that game up and there's going to be an audience because somebody's going to have a player from one of those teams on their fantasy team. Somebody's going to have money invested in it. They've just done more to make the sport presentable and interesting to people, even if they don't have a team. And we've talked about this before. You and I grew up, it was like you had to have a team who's your team. And now. And you've made the point because of fantasy football. It isn't about that. Your team is your fantasy team. Yeah, like, like, listen, that's cool. You know, so and so plays for this team. Like he's not on my team. That's what's important. And I think the NFL recognized that and the NFL's taking advantage of that. And I think fantasy football and gambling is the biggest reason why they've just continued to take over. Because you could put any matchup you wanted on and counter the NBA's matchup, whatever it is, whatever interesting storyline the NBA thinks they have. More people are going to watch the NFL because the NFL has done a better job of making their product and their league presentation presentable and interesting to the consumer. And that's why they've seen the spike.
Dan Patrick
In the numbers and they're not. You can do about it. You don't have a Michael Jordan that can combat a Walter Payton. You don't have a Shaquille o' Neal that can combat a Ray Lewis. You, you don't have a Kobe Bryant that can combat a Peyton Manning. You don't. You don't have the star power. And that's no shade, I promise. That's no shade towards, towards the, you know, SGAs or the Anthony Edwards in, in the league, the Jason Tatums or whoever else you have as the, the Giannis or the Yokages. It's no shade, I promise. They just don't have the draw that a Shaquille o' Neal had. You had an opportunity with Shaq. You had an opportunity with Kobe. You had an opportunity with MJ and Scottie Pippen and even the Mailman, like by, by market, you know, Magic Johnson. You had the opportunities to have a captive audience and a large, tremendously passionate viewing audience when you develop those brands. But you're. You're at the risk of having strong branded players in the NBA versus a strong brand. The Shield that continues to prove that even if Peyton Manning leaves, even Tom Brady leaves, even if any of the best of the best players that play in the National Football League retire and are done, this league just continues to grow more and more and more and they're finding more ways to, to expand and they build that off of the brand of the Shield. And that might have been the best asset created by the NFL owners. And, and, and what we've watched Paul Tagliabo and, and, and have watched Roger Goodell continue to grow and build. It's just, it's. They have created something so strong that they continue to widen the gap between other sports, at least domestically.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
And also to your point on Goodell, I don't think he gets enough credit because a lot of it's, you know, it's the cool thing to do. Boo the commissioner. Like, you know, like the cool thing to do is boo the commissioner. You know, when, when Gary Bettman comes out on the ice, they boom. In the NHL. You know, like Rob Manfred gets, he said some dumb things before in the past, but that's the cool thing. Goodell gets booed all that stuff. The one thing you can be critical of maybe the way he handled punishments and the NFL having too much say when it came to off field crimes. And you know, there was obviously the, the mismanagement of the Ray Rice video and what happened afterwards. All of that is fair criticism. He did not do a great job, but it, from a business standpoint, he's hit it out of the park. Like from a business standpoint. There's a reason why the owners reelect him every single time because he has had an eye to that, to your point, and he has recognized there's an ability to grow the game and to cater to an audience that if we do that, we will far surpass any other quote, unquote competition that's out there. And I think that's what's happened and he deserves a lot of that credit as well.
Dan Patrick
Well, you hit it earlier and I'll just end with this. The, the, the, the mic drop is Goodell being able to be able to incorporate and implement gambling and it being a legal deal where you're able to do it, they're, they're opening up sports books in, in, in the arenas, in the stadiums. Now that's probably the singular pat on the back that a boy that Roger Goodell gets from these owners because it has probably taken revenues up significantly in terms of what they're able to bring in and what, what they weren't able to bring in. But it still was out there and it still existed, Jonas. Now they're able to bring that into their doors and add that to their bottom line. So, yeah, I mean, the things that they've done, the things that Roger Goodell has done have been very strategically sound, very intentional in purpose and placing, and it's working. You're seeing it work, as you mentioned, and you've created a larger fan base based upon fantasy football. People who aren't even serious football fans still get involved with fantasy football. So even if it's not an aggressive way, a passionate way of getting involved with the game, you still have people that are passive, passive fans that are still getting involved with the game because fantasy football brings them together. It's like a night of sorry or night of monopoly or whatever it may be, you know, so it's super smart, man.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
And by the way, speaking of sorry, Lee Dalap is our executive producer here. Lee, how many fantasy football leagues are you in each year?
Lavar Arrington
At least four, but probably closer to five.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Okay. Like, he's a degenerate. I mean, and by the way, he still hasn't paid anybody for.
Taraji P. Henson
I have paid them all.
Dan Patrick
He said he paid it all. He said he. He holds the money, people.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
And if I would never enter, I would never enter a league where lead the lap holds the money for the prize winners. Just wouldn't happen because that's a mistake. Right out the gate, you're already off to a bad start.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Because if Lee Delaps holding the money, that means at some point, Prestige Liquor in Burbank is holding the money. That is very true, but it's just layaway.
Dan Patrick
It's.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
That's the bank. That's.
Dan Patrick
That's the bank that's holding the money.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Right.
Dan Patrick
By the end, I'm just hoping to.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Win and not so I don't have to pay out. Yeah, right. Yeah. So look, it just, you know, on behalf of degenerates everywhere, you know, I just want to tell Roger, Telling the NFL, you're welcome. I mean, you're welcome here.

David Spade Stand Up Special Dandelion can be seen right now on Amazon Prime. Also has a podcast with Dana Carvey. It's called Fly on the Wall and learn more about his upcoming tour dates@davidspade.com Great to see you again. We were just talking about There is a moment. There's a clip that's been viral for a long time where you're sitting with Chris Rock and you're at a Laker game and Rock is talking to Kobe, trying to engage. What was he talking to Kobe? Trying to what? What was going on in that scenario?
Lavar Arrington
Well, it was. It all happened so fast, Dan. Well, you know, you can get our agency had these great seats in the old days. They might still be bumped right up to the Laker bench. And it's very odd. I felt bad for the players because you Sit right next to them, like, arm to arm. And you've just got random idiots, whoever's got some heat on them, they're sitting next to you that game, and they're sweating. They're in the middle of the huddle. And I'm like, maybe we should try a sucker trap, you know, but. And it's. It's. It's a drag because they're there. But Kobe sat there and. And half the game we'd switch, you know, so we got to sit and. But they were all nice, all those players. But then, you know, in the heat of the moment, I think Kobe. It was just a very odd situation where the camera's panning over from Kobe and Chris, I think, is talking to him. Yeah. And then I was laughing because I could tell it wasn't clicking because Kobe was mamboed out, you know, but.
David Spade
Okay, so what is Rock saying to Kobe?
Lavar Arrington
What he's saying is, we don't know, but I know he's saying a lot, and he's just going on, if he's talking to me, I couldn't hear him, it was so loud. And if he's talking to Kobe, Kobe was worried about something else, but it all looks funny. I like it all.
David Spade
Okay, but how do you get those tickets with your agency? Like, first come, first serve?
Lavar Arrington
You just have to ask and say, hey, can I come to one of these games? Or sometimes they'll call and say, do you want the tickets tonight? And, you know, it's a little bit of a hassle. They're so good. But at the last second, sometimes they're like, oh, Mark Wahlberg fell out. But sometimes, you know, Rock is in town. And last time I went to New York, I said, I may went to the Knicks, or maybe when he came, we went there. But usually they can shake him up. Shake it out, if that's a term. And it's super fun. When I did a curb your enthusiasm episode. Oh, thanks. A couple of people remember we. The joke was that Larry, because NBC has two sets of tickets. They have those down on the floor, and they have some of the rafters. And Larry asked for tickets and they go, sure, sure. And the head of NBC gives him tickets, but they're in the rafters. And he goes, I wanted the other tickets. And then I'm with the guy on the floor from NBC and he's mad because he says Seinfeld was bigger than just shoot me. Why do I get the floor seats? Which is a good argument.
David Spade
But there is a pecking order of tickets that if Mark Wahlberg wants tickets, that you're not getting the tickets?
Lavar Arrington
Well, I wouldn't make it that simple. I mean, I think a little bit. But no, I would say I would give them to Wahlberg.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
Or I'll sit with Wahlberg. You know what I mean? They sometimes go. There's four. So sometimes the agents usually, you know, and then they'll bring one of their clients or someone they're courting or someone's got a movie coming. Sometimes they say, you got a movie coming out. Let's put you on the floor here. Let's put you here at the UFC fight. Let's pepper you around, sprinkle you. And then it's just more promotion, I guess. Right.
David Spade
Do you sat next to a Kardashian?
Lavar Arrington
No, I saw Kimberly at the 50th SNL, and I. I never see her. I never see any of the Kardashians, shockingly.
David Spade
How was that event?
Lavar Arrington
Well, then look at a clip. No, it was. I thought it was a lot of fun because. Because we had everybody there. I thought the rehearsals were more fun. It was three days this time. The 40th was pretty quick. But this was three days of rehearsing with different people and just walking around and, you know, it's your turf a little bit, because I was honest now. So you can go up to almost anyone and go, hey, how's it going? And they have to give you a few minutes. But everyone's usually pretty, like, because there's no plus ones either. It's just all. It's all raw dogging. Just everyone is there alone in the audience and stuff. But I had a lot of fun. Yeah, for sure.
David Spade
So there's nobody you're nervous about walking up to and saying, hey?
Lavar Arrington
Oh, yeah, there was. I mean, I. You just randomly. I saw Miley Cyrus, who I think is great. I saw Jack Nicholson, who. You know, everyone will give you a few seconds. It's nice. I mean, Bill Murray was sitting next to me in the audience and on the charts. And then I saw him backstage. I said, I think I'm sitting next to you. And he was obviously overjoyed. And then when we got out there, the seat filler, the whole three hours, I'm like, what's happening? He never came out.
David Spade
Wow.
Lavar Arrington
He sat there eating, like, cantaloupe cubes they had cut up in the back.
David Spade
Do you think that. That because you went up to him, that maybe that was the reason why he didn't come out and he had a seat filler spooked him, maybe.
Lavar Arrington
I don't know if I spooked him, Dan, because I am an alumni. I'm cast member number 3847621. And that's what it says on my membership card. And no, they. They set it all up and like, I'm over here. There's one scene I did in the. In the show where I had to run in the audience and sit down and we did a rehearsal and I forgot the audience is empty. Rehearsal. I have 30 seconds. So I run out of the sketch and run in the audience, and then there's Jane, curtains in my seat, and Chevy Chase. And they're like, hey, can you guys. And I'm like, no one plans this ahead of time. I have to scoot these legends out so I can squeak in and do my little bits.
David Spade
That's humor.
Lavar Arrington
It's fun. It was funny. Yeah.
David Spade
Dandelion, the stand up. Why Dandelion?

Look at this banana in my hotel room. I think it's seen better days. This is hot off the presses. This is what they give me, man. I'll make some banana bread. Sorry to interrupt.
David Spade
Go, go ahead, Dan.
Lavar Arrington
Look at this. My set list for tonight. I'm in Omaha. You ever been to Omaha, Dan?
David Spade
Yes, I have.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, I thought I'd trick you there.
David Spade
Yeah, no.
Lavar Arrington
I got three cities in Ohio next week. Did you know there's three cities in Ohio, Dan?
David Spade
There's Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati.
Lavar Arrington
Nice try. Newark.
David Spade
Oh. Oh, you're gonna play Newark. Wow.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
David Spade
I grew up in Ohio, David. David. Yes, I do.
Lavar Arrington
I know nothing about you.
David Spade
Yeah, why don't you care?
Lavar Arrington
I know this is like a sports morning show or something. This is like, region. Why don't you stand at your desk like some of those other guys?
David Spade
Because I'm not on a power trip. Because. Okay, whenever you go on Letterman, remember how high Letterman's chair was? Because, hey, it's a power thing. It's a power thing that, you know, he looks. He's already 6 4, but he. He has to. He's talking down to you. Literally.
Lavar Arrington
I never figured that out. And it was on every show. They would turn and Letterman would go, and what are you doing today, Tiny Tim? But I. I hurt my neck. I hurt my C5 trying to look at him and tell him my bits.
David Spade
He's David Spade. Actor, comedian, podcast.
Lavar Arrington
Hey, are you in Happy Gilmore?
David Spade
Dude, I am in Happy Gilmore. Yes, too. Yes.
Lavar Arrington
Or is it a secret? I don't know.
David Spade
No, no, no. I've talked about it. I'm in it.
Lavar Arrington
Exciting. That's gonna be a.
David Spade
Are you. Are you in it?
Lavar Arrington
I'm not in it. I wasn't in the first one, but I was excited to hear about it.
David Spade
And I wasn't in the first one either.
Lavar Arrington
I was trying to get. Anyway. I was trying to get.
David Spade
Do you drop a hint with Sandler? Like Sandman? What. What kind of role do you got for me? For Happy Gilmore, too?
Lavar Arrington
No, that's too thirsty. I just. The way he works on all that stuff is. Talks about something like a year ahead. He goes, hey, I might do this, might do this. But I didn't even see anything in Happy Gilmore. And I was. I don't know what I was doing, but it almost didn't cross my mind unless people would go, are you in Happy Gilmore? I'm like, I don't think so. I wasn't the other one. I wouldn't even know what I would do. Plus, he's got sort of. I do. I did think it'd be great if he had all these fun golfers in it. And so it would be fun because I golf. But the truth is, people go, you golf? You should be. And I'm like, who cares? They just pretend. I mean, you don't have to be that great. You think? You know what I mean? They just show they could have Lindsay Lohan out there hitting 900 yard drives. It's movie magic.
David Spade
The podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey.
Lavar Arrington
You know Dana, right?
David Spade
Yes, I do.
Lavar Arrington
Okay, good.
David Spade
Very, very talented.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, very talented. He's fun. We do a podcast, like, you know, they told me my walls are too blank in my podcast, and Dana's are worse. Looks like he's in some gulag prison, but we just do it from home. And you have a lot of tchotchkes. I like it. Maybe too much, but I do like, like having something.
David Spade
Yeah, I lead the league in tchotchkes, but I like it. I like, you know, if. If. If the story I'm telling isn't that interesting, maybe you find something on the desk and then you go, oh, that's interesting. Yeah, that's what you need.
Lavar Arrington
Deputy. Go ahead.
David Spade
Do you guys. So with your fly on the wall, are you dishing about things that happen on Saturday Night Live? Is that. That the.
Lavar Arrington
I mean, that. That's how it started. And we did. We probably did 200 of those. But we do. We're going to all video now. I mean, right now it's audio. One of them's audio. And it's like the newspaper. You got to get a little Video going. So we are getting with. We're catching up to 2018, and we're gonna be on video and then. And so it's on YouTube also. But it's fun. You know, we talk to whoever. A lot of comics, mostly comedy people, but sometimes we branch out because we've kind of buzzed through a lot of SNL people. It's definitely fun to do. Dana's funny. We just screw off. He's great.
David Spade
When you pick a location to film a special, like, what goes into. You pick that city. How much thought goes into that?
Lavar Arrington
I would think. How. How. What cities I do well, in what cities are good comedy cities. Denver is where I did this one is known for being good comedy city. My last was Seattle, and I really liked it, but it was during COVID No, not Seattle. It was in Minneapolis. It was during COVID So we had problems filming because we had to move it from Austin because of masks. And then I didn't realize the reason we moved it was because we had to wear masks for Netflix. So not me. But the crowd was a little muffled because they were. It wasn't ideal for doing comedy. You know what I mean? If they're like. And I was listening back when my opener was on going, are they. This is a tough. I don't want a tough crowd on my own special. And so I went out and I didn't even know because you. It's so bright, you know, because I'm like Liza Minnelli. Oh, my God. They're like this cabaret, you know, with the bright lights. And then later they're like, yeah, they. They're laughing, but you can't hear them.
David Spade
How do you know when you have a bad crowd?
Lavar Arrington
Oh, you know, I had one the other night. I. I don't blame the crowd. I mean, it might sound. It's me, too, but I was at the Comedy Store practicing for this run, and I kind of want to give him a, you know, big razzle dazzle show. So I go practice stuff because it's very hard to remember an hour. And of course, I mix in new stuff that's from the special and that's not in the special. And so it's very tricky. Like, I got lost in the middle of something last night. I think I was talking about Bill Belichick, and I can't remember even what I'm saying. So the crowd. I could blame them, but sometimes it's really. It's just. I'm missing the connective tissue of jokes and what goes into the. It's. It's it's harder than it seems, I guess.
David Spade
So you're working on a Bill Belichick girlfriend?
Lavar Arrington
Well, I mean, it's an expirational bit that will work for, if it works at all for another week and a half. But yeah.
David Spade
Okay, well, we get watch something in.
Lavar Arrington
The news and you go, hey, I saw the interview where his girlfriend is off camera. And I don't even care the age difference, but I thought, you know, because she wore like a big sweatshirt and no pants. I thought, and I thought that was an interesting look when there was a crew there. And then she, you know, interjected, and she's walking around like Winnie the Pooh. It looked like a shirt with no pants, you know, and, but it could have been. I don't know what it was, but I thought, what are you saving the pants for 60 minutes? And then, and then Bill, of course he's not going to the Met either. He's got like an old sweatshirt on with a little throw up on it. And he's just like, wow, we're going to Cleveland. And they're asking, they're like, hey, who's this chick? And he's like, ah. Because he's never been asked a non football question in 27 years. And so like, what's going on here with this skeezer? And he's like, huh, we're going to rehearsal. I know that's not, that's a little harsh. I was just saying, like, that's their words. I wouldn't say that.
Taraji P. Henson
That.
David Spade
Yeah, but you date young too, so.
Lavar Arrington
I don't know if we need to interject that in the middle.
David Spade
I'm, I'm working on it. You.
Lavar Arrington
Well, every. That's why I said I didn't have a problem with that part. I don't have a problem with any of it. I just have to think of stupid stuff to talk about. But I will say, since literally everyone's younger than me now, I guess that is the case. I'm not, I, I look 22. I'm not Dan.
David Spade
If you got rid of the mustache. Yeah, like, I think you think the mustache makes you look older. Beard.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, everything.
David Spade
Like, if you just clean shaven, you probably, you could probably pass for about.
Lavar Arrington
29, you know, when I did the wrong Missy. Oh, thank you. My maid's in here. When I did the wrong Missy. She saw it. I had to shave everything. Sandlers. I'd shave everything. Actually, it's kind of my idea because I go, I'm supposed to be. Now you, you know. No. Thought Goes into this. That's what you think. But I go, oh, I'm from Portland. I'm a businessman. Like, I'm working. I said, I would be pale with a. I wouldn't have, like, a beer. Trying to be cool. Swartzen was one. Dude, I got a beard. I'm like, why? I don't want to shave. I go, that's. Why Is that why? So Adam goes, shave your beard. Anyway, we can't, by the way, this is a side story. First story was, I shaved. I look gross. The second story is. Is swartzing. The night before we're shooting, we're walking around, and me and Adam see Nick, and he goes, I thought, you're gonna shave. You're shooting in the morning. Oh, Nick, go cram your lines. We got seven pages. I got this. He's always angry. He's always, like, fake M. Mad at all times. You know what he is? He's grousy. So the next day, he's an hour late, and he has his beard. I'm like, nick. He's like, what? What did we land on? I go, we all said, you're shaving it for two weeks. Anyway, this is what I deal with, Dan. It's not all fun and games like you with the fireplace. You're rolling wherever you feel like it. Action, blah, blah, sports.
David Spade
Well, that was. That was quite a payoff for that.
Lavar Arrington
There was no payoff. I put the do not disturb on, you know, for the whole time I'm here. And then they always want to get in to see what they're dealing with, you know? So she goes, hello, Skip. What's that? And she goes. She knocks and goes, did you knock? I go, did I knock to you outside? No. And then she goes, well, I gotcha. And then she tries to summarize how bad it's going to be. She goes, you want me to get in there? And I go, I'm good. And she goes, maybe get those towels off the ceiling for you. I go, no.
Taraji P. Henson
Okay.
Lavar Arrington
You want me. You want me to help you dispose of that body back there?
David Spade
David Spade, stand Up special.
Lavar Arrington
I'm mid bit and you're looking at your paper.
David Spade
I know. I was trying to help you. I. I got a hard out here, and I want to save the punchline for tonight in Omaha.
Lavar Arrington
Now we're going live to Stefan Diggs on the boat. What's happening?
David Spade

David Spade
Waving goodbye. Thank you.

So what I'm hearing you saying is healing is a part of us also reconnecting to our childhood in some sort. You said I look how youthful I look because I never let that little girl inside of me die. I go outside and run outside with the dogs. I still play like a kid. I laugh, you know, I love jokes. I love funny. I love laughing. I laugh at myself. I don't take myself too seriously. David Spade
Bryan Cranston, he's a busy man. Emmy, Tony, Golden Globe winning actor, Oscar nominated actor as well. He was Malcolm in the Middle. He was Breaking Bad. Now he's got two more movies coming out. Die Hard, Los Angeles sports fan. He's got the Phoenician scheme that opens up May 30th, nationwide, June 2nd, and then everything's going to be great. Opens up June 20th. Look at you, Mr. Actor there. How do you have time? Thanks. Thanks for spending some time with us, Brian.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah, I don't have a lot of time for these, these opening remarks. We got to get right to the meat dp.
David Spade
Okay.
Taraji P. Henson
And by the way, I miss. I miss saying the opening stats. I always like to go 7 foot 4, 114 pounds.
David Spade
What is your height and weight?
Taraji P. Henson
My height and weight? Well, I used to be 6 foot, but I'm probably 511 now. My weight is 182. I'd like to get that down.
David Spade
But do you lie about your height or weight? Do actors do that?
Taraji P. Henson
Of course we do.
David Spade
Why.
Taraji P. Henson
Why would you not? No.
David Spade
Okay. Now it. I was told this before that it's harder to be a better actor, great actor, if you're taller. Any truth?
Taraji P. Henson
There are few actors of great height who are actually. Who actually became stars. Much, many more who were smaller. But it is also true that most actors who become stars have large heads, like elephantitis heads. You know, they have to have prop. Prop them up over there. And blue eyes if you have light eyes.
David Spade
Really?
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah.
David Spade
Okay. Who's got a big noggin? That's a great actor.
Taraji P. Henson
Well, you just think about any Brando.
David Spade
Have a big head.
Taraji P. Henson
Oh, like enormous. Like a coconut. Yeah, he was. And all. I mean, all these people, even, even the women. The women who have larger have a better chance to be a movie star.
David Spade
That's not true. That's not true.
Taraji P. Henson
Well, I'm trying here.
David Spade
You know, David Hasselhoff had a big head, but not a great actor.
Taraji P. Henson
He was a. He's a lovely guy. I was gonna say he was a lovely guy, but he's still alive. Nice guy. I, I did an episode of Baywatch back in the day where I played. I think my character name was like Drunken boat Captain or something.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
Like that.
David Spade
But. But you didn't have a Speedo on. Like, you weren't running in slow motion on. On Baywatch?
Taraji P. Henson
No, no. When I'm in skimpy underwear, it's. It's full on motion every. You want to see everything, apparently.
David Spade
But did Walter White have to wear tighty whities?
Taraji P. Henson
No. You know, it was interesting because after seven years of Malcolm in the Middle where Hal wore tighty whities because I thought it was appropriate because he was just a big boy, so he never really grew up. And for some reason, Vince Gilligan wrote that Walter White wore tighty whities. And I went to the wardrobe call and I said, well, I just did seven years. So I tried on boxers, and I tried on long, and it's like, you know what? There's some reason that he did this, and I'm just gonna go with it. And that image of him in the desert, that first poster of the gun and his tighty whities is so pathetic that I thought, oh, that's. I think that's the image he wanted to go for.
David Spade
But how often do you question when you. When you have a director or there's something on the page where you offer feedback or you're gonna stand up for what you think might be right?
Taraji P. Henson
All the time. All the time. Yeah. You're constantly making adjustments. I just did a couple episodes of the show, the studio, where my character at the end shows up in leopard, very skinny bikini briefs, which I chose, and stockings with garter clips and a girdle, and he wears a dickie. He's the most ridiculous looking guy in the world. And. And I. I wanted all of those things, and so we just adjusted it to those. And I surprised Seth Rogen when I walked out of the room and he saw me for the first time on camera.
David Spade
It's a great character because it came out of nowhere, you know, first episode, and I'm like, oh, my God. It's like, you know, this combination of. You're gonna try to bring in every studio head of all the things that are negative about them or over the top about them, and you just kind of combined it with one character, and it was like, all right. Yeah, that's Hollywood right there.
Taraji P. Henson
It's kind of patterned. I patterned him after Robert Evans, famous studio head of paramount in the 70s, did great movies, but he was always super tan, bleached his teeth. He always wore very masculine clothes. He was that kind of guy. His shirt was unbuttoned to his navel, you know, and he Was, hey, baby. You know that dude. So that's more fun to play a guy like that.
David Spade
I got the picture here from Baywatch. Paulie just sent it to me. Wow. Okay. All right. Those are short shorts you got on, by the way.
Taraji P. Henson
Those were the times. Don't tell me you didn't have short shorts in the. I did in this. Yeah, everybody did. Remember the NBA back in the day?
David Spade
Yes. Yeah, I. You know, growing up, I had short shorts. And John Stockton, I think, was like, the last holdout. Like, you know, he was the last guy to wear short shorts. Paulie, what do you have? On this episode with Brian, that fine.
Lavar Arrington
Episode of Baywatch, November 89, Bryan Cranston played Captain Tom Logan, and he was wearing, like, op shorts and, like, those croaky glasses, and his hair was completely down the middle and feathered like.
David Spade
It looks good. Were you at that time?
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah. Yeah, I bet. Robin and I have been married for 36 years now. Yeah. Yeah.
David Spade
Okay.
Taraji P. Henson
89.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
David Spade
But you're there on Baywatch, I mean.
Taraji P. Henson
Oh, yeah. Those.
David Spade
They're out there, you know, disappointment. Did anybody notice Captain Tom Logan of, you know, the. The women. Did you catch anybody's eye there?
Taraji P. Henson
You know, I don't know. I don't know whose eye I caught. Oh, my God.
David Spade
Were you born in Hollywood?
Taraji P. Henson
I was born in the city of Hollywood. Yes. Right in Hollywood. And raised in Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley.
David Spade
And famous classmates?
Taraji P. Henson
No, I didn't have any famous classmates in the area. I think. Well, Kevin Spacey went to. To the same high school a couple years after me, but then transferred out to go to a better theater school. But outside of that, there really. No, no, no Famous. No one famous.
David Spade
Tougher to get Knicks tickets. Courtside or Laker tickets? Courtside.
Taraji P. Henson
Laker tickets. Courtside. Tougher.
David Spade
Tougher.
Dan Patrick
Yeah.
David Spade
Okay. What's the process?
Taraji P. Henson
It's just jam. Well, first, there is a way I can give advice to all the listeners and viewers about how to get courtside seats. First, become a television star or a movie star. Do that first. Then you'll have a lot better chance of getting courtside seats. But I did get courtside seats last year to. To Nick's Pacers. Had a great time. Had a great time watching it, and they're back at it again.
David Spade
I know, but, you know your sitcom Famous with Malcolm in the Middle and then Breaking Bad, like, you know, I'm gonna guess Breaking Bad, you got. It was easier to get the tickets than with Malcolm in the Middle.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah, it give. It gave me a higher profile. Absolutely.
David Spade
Okay.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah. So, yeah. Yeah, that's what I get mostly recognized for. I would say. I'd say like 7 out of 10 people who approached me like, you okay there?
David Spade
I think I just broke something. My mic collapsed here.
Taraji P. Henson
That's about 7 out of 10 people recognize me as. As Walter White. Yeah.
David Spade
So I want to talk about the Phoenician scheme.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah.
David Spade
Because. Because Wes Anderson does things differently than anybody else. How would you describe what he does as a filmmaker?
Taraji P. Henson
He. Well, he is the truest sense of the word auteur. There is no way that anyone can say, oh, I think I know what Wes is thinking on this. I think I know where he's gonna go with this. You just don't know at all. It is a unique journey when you do a Wes Anderson movie, because it's always clever, it's always surprising, and it's just. It's so much fun. But the thing about, from an actor's point of view, doing the Phoenician scheme, or Asteroid City before that or whatever, it's the experience of being with him and all the actors at the same table at the dinner every night after you work. And that kind of camaraderie was so much fun. In fact, Tom Hanks calls it actor cast. It's a good hang. And we. And all the actors are there. We're having wine and cocktails and food, and we're talking about things that we're worried about or families and things like that without worrying about prying eyes or ears around us. And we can just be open, and it's a lot of fun.
David Spade
So Tom Hanks, I believe, plays your brother. You got Michael Sarah in there. Scarlett Johansson, Benicio Del Toro. Yeah, yeah, pretty good.
Taraji P. Henson
Benedict Cumberbatch, Rhys Ahmed. I mean, it's a big, big cast. And Tom and I are playing brothers. We think we're brothers. It was never actually established, but they're so, so alike. Now there's a basketball sequence in the movie that Tom and I are involved in. And when we got to the set, we're asked, okay, who. Who can do this and who could do that? And so Tom. Tom's going, I can't really dribble very well, so I'll dribble. And I said, look, I got problems with my shoulders. I got arthritis. It was like. It was like if you went to the assisted living center to get two.
David Spade
Basketball players, people sent me that clip of you got of you shooting basketball, wondering if you were trying to model your shot after me for some reason. And I said, well, if he. If he was trying, he didn't do a very good job, but because.
Taraji P. Henson
Because I made the best dripping.
David Spade
No, it wasn't dripping with athleticism. I'm just gonna say, you know, as a basketball player, you're a great actor.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah. No, I wasn't modeling myself after. You're. You're. They broke the mold when they made.
David Spade
The Dan Patrick the Phoenician scheme. That comes out May 30th and then nationwide June 2nd, and everything's going to be great. That comes out June 20th.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah.
David Spade
Did you shoot these around the same time?
Taraji P. Henson
No. Phoenicians game we shot last year. Everything's going to be great. We shot before it, but it's. It's like jockeying for position and who's going to. And what's the right time to come out with a movie. And, you know, it's. Those decisions are made by someone else. But Everything's Going to Be Great is also a really. It's a beautiful film with Alison Janney and myself and. And it. It reminded me of Little Miss Sunshine from years ago. It's funny and sweet and sad and engaging. Yeah.
David Spade
Anyway, Little Miss Sunshine, that final dance scene.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah.
David Spade
Fun stuff. Brings. Brings down the house. Yes. Alan Arc. I mean, there's so many great performances in there.
Taraji P. Henson
Oh, yeah.
David Spade
It's one of those little sneaky surprise movies where you're like, damn, I don't. I don't. You know, everybody. When you watch a movie, it's like, I don't know, it's going to be nominated. Everything's going to be nominated. Instead of just watching movies, I think we're always like, well, what's going to do at the box office? Is anybody going to go see this in the movie theaters? It's kind of like the pressure. I don't know how different it is now than, let's say, you know, 15 years ago.
Taraji P. Henson
It's a lot different. When you and I were kids, every show, every morning show, every news show had a movie and television reviewer specifically to relay to the audience what they felt was good of high quality. They fired all of those people. And so now the news readers just read off what made the most money last weekend at the box office as if that's the indication of quality. And so it's. It's kind of sad. So you really need the word of mouth to be able to say, don't miss this movie or that movie.
David Spade
Paulie told me that there might be. We're bringing back Malcolm in the Middle.
Taraji P. Henson
Is there a. Yeah, we did it? Yeah, we shot it already.
David Spade
Oh, you shot it?
Taraji P. Henson
Oh, we did. We did four episodes for Disney and they. We just finished it. So that'll be out probably either later this year or early next year. And, man, I gotta tell you, it was so much fun. All the. All the kids came back and, you know, it's funny because the boys for Malcolm in the Middle are all around the same age that I was when we first started the show 25 years ago.
Dan Patrick
Wow.
Taraji P. Henson
They have kids of their own. It's so great to see and. And the. And the adults that they become. It's really fantastic.
David Spade
When you do the race walking scene, do you. Do you still have that outfit? Because I'd love to put it in the man cave.
Taraji P. Henson
Oh, would you? It would have to be on it. It would have to be on a mannequin.
David Spade
Yes, yes, I'd get a mannequin.
Taraji P. Henson
Well, let me see if I can get it for you, because I'd love to see it on your show.
David Spade
Well, why don't you drop everything that you're doing and. And, like, do something for me, like, right now? Like, right now?
Taraji P. Henson
That was implied. Of course I'm gonna drop everything. Yes, absolutely. Absolutely.
David Spade
I don't like nothing else. No, don't read any scripts or anything. It's like, nope, I can't. I'm sending an outfit from Malcolm in the Middle to Dan Patrick.
Taraji P. Henson
I'm wondering if they still have it. I don't know, but, man, that was a funny, funny thing. And I was, you know, I was real trim then. I was like 172 or 3, something like that.
David Spade
Well, I'm not going to wear it. I'm just. I'm gonna put it on the mannequin.
Taraji P. Henson
But I think you should wear it, though. I think you should. You should put it off.
David Spade
Will Ferrell brought the testicles from Step Brothers that he rubbed. He brought him to Ireland and we were doing our show over there, and he brought the testicles that he rubbed on William C. Riley's drums.
Taraji P. Henson
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
David Spade
Okay. I'm just saying.
Taraji P. Henson
I also. I also brought you a treat.
Brendan Patrick Hughes
You did?
David Spade
You brought me. Yeah. That was a fake penis thing that you had under the covers.
Taraji P. Henson
Yes, exactly. An erection toy. Where is that? I don't see that anywhere on the set. Right.
David Spade
It's. It's. It's in here. Yes.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, it's prominently displayed. People always ask what it is.
Taraji P. Henson
Yes.
David Spade
It's on the other side. It's. I'm up in Maine, so this is in the. The main or the regular. No, it's all the way on the other side by the couch.
Lavar Arrington
We're getting it.
David Spade
Yeah.
Dan Patrick
Okay.
David Spade
Be able to see it. Wait, hold on. Well, I got my cameraman walking over there, but. Oh, there, there. There it is. It's. It's right by my LA Charger. Helmet it. And I've got your. Whatever that thing is that you gave me.
Taraji P. Henson
But I've talked about it getting a charge. Oh, yeah, that was it from a movie called. What was that called?
David Spade
Jeez.
Taraji P. Henson
That was called the Upside. The Upside with Kevin Hart.
David Spade
Okay.
Taraji P. Henson
And. And. And Nicole Kid.
David Spade
And your upside right there.
Taraji P. Henson
It's like. Hello.
David Spade
Well, good luck with everything.
Taraji P. Henson
Thank you, brother.
David Spade
Thanks. Thanks for joining us as always.
Taraji P. Henson
Well, thank you. It's always good to see you. And whenever you get out to LA or down to New York, give a holler. I'd love to have you buy me lunch.
David Spade
Why don't you give me a holler when you're in New York?
Taraji P. Henson
Well, you're not in New York.
David Spade
I know, but I can get to New York.
Taraji P. Henson
Okay, I will. I will give you a holler as. As they said in the old days.
David Spade
And I'll buy you dinner.
Taraji P. Henson
Lovely, Lovely.
David Spade
All right. He's Bryan Cranston, the Phoenician Scheme, Wes Anderson. And if you're a fan of those movies, then you know what you're getting. It opens nationwide June 2nd. Everything's going to be great. That opens on June 20th.
