See, we were talking about this the other day and I mentioned on yesterday's show that, like, the Soros people are like getting into the media game. And I'm like, we literally should be linking with them. Like, that's literally. We're the kind of show that people like that who are trying to put out left leaning agendas.

You know what I'm saying? I mean, this is the kind of. Cause the thing is, I think what everyone's always nervous about is when you do left leaning stuff, it ends up coming off like Arrow America. I don't know if you remember in the early 2000s.

Al Gore and some other people started this Air America that was supposed to be like the liberal Fox News for radio and stuff like that. And yeah, it ended up coming off as like, Boring. And just what didn't really pop off.

And they had like some big name like Marc Maron who's now become this gigantic podcaster. They had him there. They had different people who were like of note. It just didn't ring. And that's sort of like. Actually we didn't get to the Obama clip this week. It's sort of like what Obama was talking about though, in terms of trying to approach things in a way that are a little bit less stiff.

The Tumultuous Rise of American Sports Gambling. And he reached out about the book and I was like, you know what? This sounds like something we should at least hit on this show. Cause I feel like it speaks to a lot of people.

So with that, we bring in Danny Funt. What's up, Danny?

Danny, welcome.

[Danny Funt]

What's up? Good to be with you. Big, big, longtime fan of the show.

[Ebro Darden]

Well, that's what I was gonna say. Cause I don't think you and Laura have ever met. But I know that when you and I originally connected, it's cause you were always a big Hot 97 listener and knew us well. Tell everyone real quick just your origin story, Candid Camera, all of that stuff. Catch us up to where you became author.

[Danny Funt]

Yeah, I'm not really involved in Candid Camera. It's just a family, family legacy thing. And I told them you gotta get Peter to do this gag about freestyle rap. So that was fun. But I've been covering sports gambling for several years now, mainly for the Washington Post, also the New Yorker, the Wall Street Journal, some other places. And it led me to write this book called Everybody Loses that's out now. It's a major investigation into why sports betting is everywhere. Who's making money off it, who's losing money off it and where it's all headed. Because in sports politics, even hip hop, in some respects, it's just totally a dominant force and kind of hard to wrap your head around and. And I'm trying to get to the bottom of all that in the book.

[Laura Rosenberg]

Oh yeah, because I, I can honestly say I have seen more advertisements and like, you know, sponsorship deals and just in your face sports gambling in the past three years more than I've ever have.

[Ebro Darden]

Yeah.

[Laura Rosenberg]

Just being honest with you, like I'm trying to think and I'm like all of a sudden we started seeing all of these pop up and then seen like big figures in hip hop, embrace it and push it out. And I always had like, interesting, because I'm like this, you know. Yeah, it's a business opportunity, but there's also a really dark side to this.

[Ebro Darden]

Yeah. First of all, Danny, how much has it grown over the last decade or so since we got the legalization and this whole thing sort of became a thing that everyone could have on their

[Danny Funt]

phone since 2018 when the Supreme Court struck down a ban on bookmaking outside of Nevada, where it's been legal since about the 1950s. But we're really talking about an eight year period during which Americans have bet more than $650 billion. New Yorkers alone have bet $90 billion. And that graph is still going up. New York set a record in January around like NFL playoffs, college football playoffs, all that, the most money bet ever. And New York legalized, I think in 2022. So it's been a while, but it's still growing really quickly. And now you've got prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket that are bringing in a whole other pool of people. So it's kind of hard to wrap your head around those numbers that.

[Laura Rosenberg]

You blew me away, bro. I did not think you were going to hit the billions.

[Ebro Darden]

And listen, it's a slightly awkward spot for someone like me who's done reads for these websites because to be truthful with you, in the case of both of our radio stations, some of the business was keeping us afloat. So it's very hard for us who are in the sports world to not end up participating in it. I'm not going to say I've had no moral qualms with it because I certainly have. But at the end of the day, in some ways it's kept the lights on for a lot of people, particularly in sports. Danny, what's like, what's the most troubling thing? I know this is like a gigantic issue that we're gonna squeeze into a short conversation cause I wanted to publicize this book. But what is like the most troubling pattern and thing that you've been seeing as you've been studying sports gambling's evolution here?

[Danny Funt]

I'd say state after state. And this is because the industry has been hugely influential in lobbying and getting their legislation passed in one state after a lot of states have basically trusted the sportsbooks to self police. And yeah, there are regulations about like money laundering and you know, you don't want kids betting and all that. But by and large, as far as consumer protections go, the industry has been trusted to handle responsible gambling, as they call it. And I was lucky enough to speak with a lot of people who work at operators like FanDuel and DraftKings and Caesars and Fanatics and all these different sports books. And people there say that just doesn't work, that there are such powerful incentives to look the other way if a customer shows signs of a gambling problem, to egg on the biggest losers. These VIPs who are losing thousands and thousands of dollars every week and are just showered with the most incredible perks and freebies and treatment you could think of to get them to keep betting more and more. All of that is allowed because the states have basically said, you guys police yourselves. And it doesn't, it's not good enough. I remember one executive at a sportsbook said, if you think about it, your job is basically to slowly bleed customers dry. And he also said, if you're lucky enough to be an exec like me, you can make good money, but you don't feel good about it. That's for sure. I heard that stuff again and again and it's why even people in the industry have misgivings or fears that this is going to get way out of hand.

[Laura Rosenberg]

What are some of the worst case scenarios that you've seen or read about? Like, I'm sure it's going to be people losing homes, blah, blah, blah. But I'm just curious, like what is the worst that you've been like, oh my God, this is terrible.

[Danny Funt]

There are a bunch in the book. A lot of it comes back to what I mentioned a second ago about VIPs where they're getting not just everything you could imagine with sports, you know, courtside tickets, luxury suites, but also getting to play pickup on an NBA court, getting to throw out the first pitch at a major league baseball game. When you're getting that sort of treatment and just thousands of dollars in promotions and all this stuff to keep you going. If you do have a gambling problem, that makes it way more difficult to quit because you're giving up the gambling, but also that first class treatment. The other thing I'll mention, this isn't in the book, but I was talking about the book on WNYC and some middle aged guy calls in and says, I have a son who's been gambling since he was a teenager. He's lost more than $200,000 and my wife and I can't get through to him because he doesn't even think what he's doing is betting. He thinks sports gambling is an investment strategy or a side hustle. And even though he's lost so much money, he can't overcome that mindset. And it's made him and this, this guy and his wife estranged from their son just because it's such a massive problem in their lives. And so the fact that so many people think of sports betting as a way to make money and that yet the sports books do so much and are so talented, I guess, at preventing you from actually turning a profit. That is why this is a recipe for trouble for a lot of sports fans.

[Ebro Darden]

Yeah, it's, it's, oh, it's, it's so problematic. There's so many levels to this and it does seem to be getting younger and younger when, when in fact, Danny, it makes perfect sense for you to have you come back on my, once I launch, validate me later in the month to have you come on that show because this is such a just classic addiction and in many ways just scratches that same itch that other things do of that. But the craziest thing about the gambling addiction, in my opinion is, and I'm sure, Danny, I'm sure you've covered this in the book and talked to people about it, is people don't just get addicted to winning, they get addicted to losing also, which is so like wild. Like once you win too much, Laura, it actually gets boring and you need that feeling of being down to find the feeling of being up.

[Laura Rosenberg]

Right. I never thought of it that way, but yes, yes, it makes sense.

[Ebro Darden]

So, so with all the different random things that I deal with, I don't get drawn into this even though I do like to, I do like occasionally I've been betting on the Knicks recently and been having fun with it.

[Laura Rosenberg]

Yeah.

[Ebro Darden]

And I'll play with the money that's in my account and I literally, you know, I'll have the same thousand dollars I go up and down with over the course of a year or two, whatever. And I'll bet 20 here, the hundred here, whatever it is. But I know I used to enjoy it more and I was just always too cheap to put big money on it. Fortunately, same. But I know what that feeling is of like, once, let's say you're betting a football game in the third quarter, the team that you're favor, you picked, the commanders are favored by six and a half and they're up by 20. Once you get assured that the game is locked, the high goes away. And you start thinking about like, Danny, is this a common thing you hear about? You start thinking about, well, what's the next thing I can bet? Because once it is confirmed that you won, you don't even feel good anymore.

[Danny Funt]

Absolutely. You're going to give it right back. I heard about this guy. I mean, that happens all the time. It's why, you know, casinos will let you bet and bet because they know the money is going to come right back to them, even if you're winning at first. It's so true. And one of the things that actually can be the biggest curse for a better is that big win. I've spoken with so many people who were fine, and then they hit that, you know, five leg parlay or the plus 1,000 odds, you know, long shot. And that was a curse because they're chasing that, that money, but also that feeling day after day. And so, yeah, so many. This is what's called a progressive disorder. It's not like you do a drug one time and you say, okay, I might have a problem with that, or I might already feel the signs of addiction. It can take years for that to set in. And sometimes it's that big win that does it.

[Ebro Darden]

I've been there, you know, I've been sponsored by a major, you know, liquor company. And then I've also seen like, you know, you know, how we both feel about people like drinking and driving and you know, and yeah, it's.

So it's a mixed bag because you're like, yeah, you can use this.

Yeah.

No, she's doing great. But we took her to our friends Zach and Amanda's house the other day in Jersey. And Zach and Amanda have an adorable 3 year old boy named Henry. And Henry's a very sweet kid and he loves baby Maya. He's always interested in baby Maya. Oh, baby Maya this, baby Maya that.

Yo, at one point, Laura, we're in the backyard and I hear like a. Oh. And I look over and Maya's feet are just sticking straight up on the ground.

And I'm not being dramatic here, I'm telling you honestly, what happened to my brain. I looked over and my baby is laying flat on her back and all I see is like Henry is on top of her. And I'm like, my brain could not process why is my child lying flat on the ground. I'm not gonna lie. I paused. I really was. I was like. And Natalie and Amanda both like jumped to them and picked them both up, right? And Maya was just like. Now fortunately it was in their little garage, which is cement on the floor. Fortunately, Maya's head. They were in front of trash cans, like plasticy trash cans.

So Maya's head, I guess hit the plasticky trash can. Thank God almighty. And Henry obviously meant nothing by it. He loves her and I guess was excited and just ran and crashed into her and took her out. But I, And I love Henry. He's a great little kid. But this bascom, I mean, no offense by this. Why are boys idiots? I'm sorry, are little boys idiots? Like, he's such a sweet little. I'm just like, what?

Not like, you know, she's years. She doesn't know what that is. But I think she's a. She's obsessed with little kids.

So I think rather than be, like, upset, like, I think if she'd fallen on her own, she might have been more likely to cry. But it's almost like she thought it was fun in some way. Like, I don't know, I'm playing with a little kid. But yeah, it also. It did. And there were other moments where Henry was like, running around with like a bat of some sort. And I'm just like. I'm also not quite. I'll be honest. We are underdeveloped, Natalie and I, in this, like, playing with other kids thing. We're just not there yet. We haven't done enough with her outside. This summer will probably be a transformative period. Lots of beach play.

Yes. And they're pushing her out of the way as they're running and throwing things. So there's going to be times where you want to toss a kid, but you can't. So you just got to remind them of, you know, she's one. Yeah, she's one years old. Yo, wait. Wait till you start.

I'm not. There's another parent. There's another parent. And they're not checking their kid. Like, there was a scenario where it's like. And it's going to happen. Kids. Some. Some A hole kids, they love to block the. The slide.

Yes, yes. Slide blocking. Yes. So there was this one kid who kept elbowing Kenza when she was trying to go down is. She is an older. She was like, maybe like five or six. And Kenzo was like three. And the mom is watching it. Yep. So I would tell her, hey, she's three. Be careful. She's a baby, you know. And then after, when I see. I'm like. I see the mom right. Doing. And I was like, hey, can you tell your child to let my 3 year old go down and she's like, oh. She's like, honey, like, halfway says it. The little girl does nothing. And I said, hey, you need to let her. You need to let her through. That's when I started getting, like, angry. And the mom was like, oh, you know what I mean? But you got to turn up sometimes. You have to. And you're going to, knowing you watch, you're going to.

Well, it was a funny. It was an interesting situation. I know I'm going to. And I know we need more experience, but it was an interesting situation because, like, obviously everything turned out fine and we laughed about it. Whatever.

But like, if, God forbid, she lands it on the cement.

Now you have, like, this awkward, like. Because nobody means anything by it, but kids are kids and you're just like, yo. Anyways, so as Natalie and I continue our conversation about when it's time for a kid, do we want a girl or a boy? Because we can choose. I just go through these moments where, like, Laura, I go back and forth between. Having a boy would be so meaningful for me because my relationship with my dad, like, I can't identify. Me and my mom don't replicate me and Maya. We replicate Maya and a dad, which is not in my family because there were no girls. The only thing I could identify with in that very direct way that I'm guessing would hit me in a different way. And I'm sure you've had this because you're the mom of a daughter. The way your mom is a mom to you and your sister is. You can be like, oh, that's what my mom. I am curious about how that would feel because my dad is the father of boys. And I'd be like, oh, this is not my dad. Okay. But then sometimes I'll be, but boys are idiots.

My nephew Alex, who is 18 now and going to Emory next year, nah, he's such a sweet boy. He makes me want to have a boy because he's such a good boy. And I'm like. And to your point, obviously, my niece is a great girl, but you don't worry about girls in the same way. The world needs kind of gentlemen. Gentlemen for real. And my nephew is one smart and compassionate.

One problem we know we have on the show. Yeah, unquestionably, is that Ebro and I over talk and talk over Laura. Yeah, that is a problem. It's something I know, I work on. I assume Ebro works on also, but it happens. It's sort of the way I feel about my afternoon show. So, for example, if the Knicks, like last week, the Knicks had a huge game and Don was out the next day.

Allen is part of the Knicks broadcast. So when we go to do the show. And Ron, I know you, you guys both listen pretty regularly if it's a big Knick show. And Don, because Don often Don Usually leads. If Don's out and it's a big Knick show, I lead. I lead so I can set up Allen, because Allen's already going to be talking a lot because it's Knicks. So if Allen were to lead and it's a big Knicks show, he basically is never shutting up. That's sort of what we face here to a certain extent, is that Ebro and I both talk a lot.

So with Ebro being in that chair and being first voice and setting himself up, it just ends up being a lot of us. And I just wonder if there's a world that we could ever work to. This man, he says he doesn't want to talk in his personal life. When it comes to here, my man wants to talk. Want to share some thoughts and have some questions? 1. Usually catch you guys on the Apple podcast. The sound is really low and I'm not sure if that's the same for all the other platforms. I have to put the volume all the way up when the commercials play and then when the commercials play, they're much louder. And when compared to other podcasts, I need to significantly lower the volume for those shows. Also, the sound level within the show needs to be leveled out. For example, Laura is usually very low compared to Ebro and Rosenberg. Big shocker. Lol. And when you guys play clips, the sound is even lower than Laura's volume. I guys, I've had this. I really would love our engineer to like hear this and try to address it. There's something off in how we are processing and that's not a Ron issue. This is a sound issue. Yeah, yeah, I do want us to figure that out and I appreciate your patience with it. 2. I think it'd be nice if you guys had your phone a fox calling just to say hi. I really like them. It's that as someone who likes vampire movies, I couldn't help but sort of mix it into the way I view vampire movies. And maybe I wasn't thinking enough about what was intended. I just took it. And to your point, and I think this is a hard thing, even for myself, who, at 46 years old and actively trying to know how to be an ally and someone who's always thinking about issues of race and treatment of black people in America, I still have my own experience and biases, so I still will go in a movie. And I would literally shut the door on my students when I would get to school because I was trying to Finnish listening to Yalls radio program. But now here, faithfully listen every day, Watch every day. So thank you for what you do. I am a former career teacher. One of the things that drove me out of the classroom were these parents. Parents for those of us who have decided not to have children, please be mindful that we want to help you. We need to help you. A lot of these parents put so much pressure on themselves. They need to do everything perfect. They need to have everything in order. And it's like they take it as a. An affront if you give them some objective advice. Now, obviously, use your discernment. If somebody comes at you with unsolicited advice, that's one thing. But, you know, I have no. I did not birth your child. So if I'm giving you a little bit of advice, something that I've seen from your child, because I've spent the last, you know, several weeks with them for eight hours at a time. Please know that it's nothing personal that you are doing. We all have blind spots. We all have things that we can do better. That's just my little soapbox to stand on real quick again. Also, it was super sunny out, so the glare of the sun was blocking. I did one of those look backs and thought to myself, was that Rosenberg's wife and baby Maya? I say all of this to ask, have any of your partners encountered thoughts of the show with your children present? I personally would have never said anything even if I had the opportunity. But number one, that's a little awkward for me, and two, out of respect, but would you like to discuss with the listeners, how do you guys feel about them?
