What's up, my friend? Liz Wilcox here. Email sound booth, episode 104. Can you dig it? Speaking of digging, do you feel like you've dug yourself into a hole because you have too many freebies? Like, everything is a content upgrade. Everything is a freebie. Well, I've got an idea for you. Back in the day, I used to be an RV travel blogger, right? I owned a little website called TheVirtualCampground.com and after a while, I like you. I had too many freebies. It was like so much. I think I had like 12 or something. Every pod or I'm sorry, every blog post had some sort of upgrade. You know, I think I. I even created a freebie because I wrote a blog post about like three things rvers and Moana have in common. Moana was like a hot topic back then, right? And shout out Moana, shout out Maui. And the content upgrade, the freebie was like, you know, what is your Disney princess RV personality or just something wild? I mean, it was creative, it was fun. I think I got exactly one sign up for that freebie. So I mentioned that to say, like, I feel you. So if you got too many freebies, here's what I did and what might be a good idea for you. It's called a resource library. And so it's just like, hey, you've found my blog, you saw my thing, you're on. I'm, you know, you heard me on a podcast, whatever. I've got this resource library. It includes ABCDEFG and that Moana Disney Princess thing, right? Like, it's just a resource library. Now if you're not watching on YouTube, highly recommend you go to watchlist.com I'm gonna pull it up right now. So the virtual campground, it's like you go to virtualcampground.com, click subscribe and it says, you know, are you a little RV obsessed? Great. Me too. Sign up to become a member of the virtual campground. When you do that, you're going to gain instant access to the hookup, right? And this is very like RV related. That means you're going to get an ebook. You're going to get my top three tips for A, B, C and D. You're also going to get these other resources, right? And so that's my resource library. Or was, Right? I don't own the virtual campground anymore. Shout out Deb and Barry, the new owners. Well, new, they've owned it. Oh my gosh, almost five years. Insane. Longer than I have owned it. Ah, that's an epiphany anyway, or a realization anyway. The resource library. Take all of your freebies, put them in a resource library and when you're asking people to sign up for your list, say, hey, when you join, you're going to get this resource library. Now for me, I might have it, you know. Liz wilcox.com resource library and that's what I'm putting in my emails. Instead of like the link to the freebie or the link to all of them at once, I'm just gonna put em on a page or whatever. All right, I hope that makes sense. I hope this is helpful in the show notes. I'm gonna link to the virtual campground so in case you're not watching on YouTube, you can check it out. I think this is my shortest podcast episode ever. All right, that's my story and I'm sticking to it. I'm Liz Wilcox. We are focused all this week on list building. So don't forget to sign up for List Building Live. That's going to be a private podcast event coming up March 11th through the 13th. The link is also going to be in the show notes for you. It's going to be all about how to grow your email list with all my peers, colleagues, members of email marketing membership giving you how they've been growing. Anyway, I'm Liz Wilcox. Podcast Summary: The Email Sound Booth with Liz Wilcox
Episode 104: Too Many Freebies? Here’s an Idea
Release Date: February 27, 2025
In Episode 104 of The Email Sound Booth with Liz Wilcox, Liz addresses a common challenge faced by online businesses and email marketers: the overuse of freebies. This episode delves into the pitfalls of offering too many free resources and introduces an effective alternative strategy to optimize email list building and engagement.
Liz begins by empathizing with listeners who feel overwhelmed by the myriad of freebies they offer. She states:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...do you feel like you've dug yourself into a hole because you have too many freebies? Like, everything is a content upgrade. Everything is a freebie.”
Having an excessive number of freebies can dilute the value of each offer, leading to diminished returns and subscriber fatigue. Liz highlights that while freebies are a popular tactic to entice sign-ups, overreliance on them can backfire, reducing their effectiveness and making it harder to track which offers genuinely engage the audience.
Drawing from her own experience as an RV travel blogger with TheVirtualCampground.com, Liz shares a candid recount of her challenges:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...I had too many freebies. It was like so much. I think I had like 12 or something. Every blog post had some sort of upgrade.”
One poignant example Liz shares is a freebie linked to a blog post comparing RVers to Disney’s Moana. Despite the creative angle:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...the content upgrade, the freebie was like, you know, what is your Disney princess RV personality or just something wild?”
This initiative garnered minimal engagement, with Liz noting she received only one sign-up. This experience underscored the inefficacy of her strategy, prompting her to seek a more streamlined approach.
To address the issue of too many scattered freebies, Liz introduces the concept of a Resource Library. Instead of distributing multiple individual freebies, consolidating them into a single, organized repository can enhance user experience and streamline email list sign-ups.
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...here's what I did and what might be a good idea for you. It's called a resource library.”
A Resource Library serves as a centralized hub where all free resources are housed. When users sign up for the email list, they gain access to this comprehensive library, rather than being offered numerous disparate freebies.
Adopting a Resource Library approach offers several advantages:
Streamlined User Experience: Users can easily browse and select the resources most relevant to them without feeling overwhelmed by numerous offers.
Enhanced Value Perception: Consolidating resources into a library elevates the perceived value, making the email sign-up more enticing.
Simplified Management: Managing a single library is more efficient than handling multiple freebie offers across various platforms.
Liz emphasizes:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...when you're asking people to sign up for your list, say, hey, when you join, you're going to get this resource library.”
Liz provides actionable steps to create an effective Resource Library:
Aggregate Existing Freebies: Consolidate all current freebies into the library, ensuring they are easily accessible and well-organized.
Categorize Resources: Organize the library into relevant categories or topics to facilitate easy navigation.
Highlight Value: Clearly communicate the benefits of accessing the Resource Library to incentivize sign-ups.
She shares her own approach:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...put all of your freebies, put them in a resource library and when you're asking people to sign up for your list, say, hey, when you join, you're going to get this resource library.”
Liz illustrates the concept using her former website, TheVirtualCampground.com. Although she no longer owns the site, she explains how a Resource Library functioned there:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...the resource library includes ABCDEFG and that Moana Disney Princess thing, right? Like, it's just a resource library.”
By centralizing her resources, Liz made it easier for her audience to access various free materials through a single sign-up point, enhancing engagement and simplifying her email marketing efforts.
Wrapping up the episode, Liz reiterates the effectiveness of a Resource Library in overcoming the challenges of excessive freebies. She encourages listeners to implement this strategy to optimize their email marketing and improve subscriber engagement.
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...just gonna put em on a page or whatever. All right, I hope that makes sense. I hope this is helpful in the show notes.”
Before closing, Liz promotes an upcoming event focused on list building:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...Don't forget to sign up for List Building Live. That's going to be a private podcast event coming up March 11th through the 13th...”
She emphasizes the importance of continuous learning and community engagement in refining email marketing strategies.
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...We are focused all this week on list building...”
Liz concludes with her signature encouragement:
“[00:00] Liz Wilcox: ...You are awesome. Get signed up for List Building Live, join the membership if you haven't, and I'll see you on the next episode.”

Overuse of Freebies: Offering too many freebies can overwhelm your audience and reduce engagement.
