Five things your landing page does not need. All right, remember, we are talking all about list building and the elements of list building. Why? Because you can't grow your audience, you can't grow your income without growing your email list. Those are just F A X facts. Okay? So, number one, excessive copy. Your landing page is just a simple page.
Co-host or Guest
Hey, do you want this or not?
Liz Wilcox
Right? There are a few exceptions to this rule, and I know everybody wants to think they're a special snowflake, but chances are you're probably not. So look at your landing page.
Co-host or Guest
Is there a lot of copy on it? How can you cut your little darlings, my love?
Liz Wilcox
Okay, number two, your landing page does not need your bio. You know, maybe a line or two. If you feel it's absolutely necessary to know that you are an expert or you've developed some sort of method, you know, that might be a thing, but most likely not, right? Like, if I was the founder of Netflix, I might put founder of Netflix. Right? But most of us are not. So it doesn't. We don't need our bio. You know, it's kind of assumed we know what we're talking about because we have this landing page. Okay? The next thing you don't need on your landing page is to collect the last name of your subscriber. Honestly, you don't even need to collect the name of the subscriber. I prefer it. I think it's a nice to have. It's not a need, but it's a. It's a very. I would say it's a very nice to have. But you definitely, definitely don't need to ask them for their last name. We want to reduce the friction. That's why I say the name is.
Co-host or Guest
A very nice to have. So that when you go to write emails, you can customize them by saying, you know, hey, Liz, here's your email of the week, instead of just saying, hey, friend.
Liz Wilcox
Right? But you definitely don't need that last name again. There are special snowflakes out there and you might be one of them listening, but chances are you can drop that last name. The fourth thing is you don't really need more than a scroll or a scroll and a half worth of copy and images, Right? We want the landing page to be as short as possible. I guess this goes hand in hand with the Excessive copy thing. But that's how important it is that I put it twice on this list if you are on your mobile. And again, if you're watching me on YouTube, you can go to watchliz.com, by the way, for that. If I'm scrolling.
Co-host or Guest
Sorry, like, if I'm scrolling more than this, you know, that's way too much copy.
Liz Wilcox
You know, I just, I want everything.
Co-host or Guest
All in one and then maybe scroll a little bit more. Right? So again, that goes back to number one, excessive copy.
Liz Wilcox
Wrong.
Co-host or Guest
That does not go on your landing page.
Liz Wilcox
And the last thing your landing page most likely does not need are, you know, crazy amount of fonts and hella headings. Right? We don't need a lot of headings. You know, if everything's in bold, nothing's in bold, Right. If everything's large text, nothing is large text. What do you really want to stand out? Put that in bold or italicize or make that the heading. Right? Also, you don't need a crazy amount of fonts you don't need to use. If you're. You hired a designer and they gave you three brand fonts, you don't need to use all three. One is enough. Two is just fine as well. But definitely using three fonts or more is gonna be a big fat no. No. All right, I went through those really quick.
Co-host or Guest

Episode 108: 5 Things Your Landing Page Doesn’t Need
Release Date: March 5, 2025
Host: Liz Wilcox
In Episode 108 of The Email Sound Booth, host Liz Wilcox delves into the crucial elements of effective landing pages, specifically focusing on list building for online businesses. Liz emphasizes that growing an email list is fundamental to expanding both audience reach and income, presenting it as an undeniable fact for success in digital marketing.
Liz begins by reinforcing the significance of list building, stating, “You can’t grow your audience, you can’t grow your income without growing your email list. Those are just F A X facts” (00:00). This sets the stage for her exploration of optimizing landing pages to enhance list growth, which is vital for sustaining and scaling an online business.
Liz kicks off her list by addressing the common pitfall of overcrowding landing pages with too much text. She advises keeping the copy concise and to the point:
Liz argues that a cluttered landing page can overwhelm visitors, reducing the likelihood of conversion. By minimizing text, businesses can create a more focused and engaging user experience that encourages sign-ups.
Next, Liz discusses the unnecessary inclusion of detailed personal bios on landing pages. While a brief introduction can be beneficial, she cautions against overloading the page with personal information:
Liz points out that unless the individual has significant credentials (e.g., “founder of Netflix”), a detailed bio is often superfluous. The primary focus should remain on the value proposition rather than the creator’s background.
In her third point, Liz highlights the inefficiency of asking for unnecessary personal information such as subscribers’ last names. She advocates for reducing friction in the sign-up process:
While collecting first names can personalize email communications, Liz suggests that even this is optional. The key is to streamline the sign-up form to maximize conversions by minimizing the required fields.
The fourth aspect Liz addresses is the tendency of landing pages to require excessive scrolling, which can deter visitors:
She emphasizes the importance of brevity, especially for mobile users, to ensure that key messages and calls to action are immediately visible without necessitating extensive navigation.
Finally, Liz warns against the overuse of fonts and headings, which can create a chaotic and unprofessional appearance:
She recommends sticking to one or two consistent fonts and using headings and bold text strategically to highlight essential information, thereby enhancing readability and aesthetic appeal.
Throughout the episode, Liz Wilcox provides actionable insights for creating effective landing pages tailored for list building:
Episode 108 of The Email Sound Booth by Liz Wilcox offers a concise yet comprehensive guide to optimizing landing pages for effective list building.
