B
You're listening to the Heart and Hustle podcast. Evelyn, how are you doing today? I'm doing lovely on this fabulous January morning.
A
Oh, it is delightfully brisk outside.
B
Cozy. Well, is it ever really brisk in Florida? No. Well, actually, yes.
A
Yeah, it can hit. It can hit brisk, actually.
B
Yes, that's true.
A
In the winter.
B
That's true.
A
That's about all we get. But it can get brisk.
B
Listen, Florida winters are a vibe.
A
They are a vibe. Although I'm not gonna lie, Christmas without the snow and like bundled coats and stuff, at least for me, does not slap. But what.
B
To be fair, I haven't experienced that really any since 2016. Well, there was like a year in there that I moved to Kansas and experienced that and I just was. Because I was in Hawaii for a very long time before that and now I'm in Florida and I just that one little Christmas it back in Kansas experiencing like brown sludge. I was like, I didn't. I didn't need it.
A
See, I think for me growing up in the country, it was not brown sludge. You get the brown sludge in the.
B
City or country roads. Well, it depends.
A
But you're like, literally you look out and it's just white bliss.
B
Sure.
A
For all your eyes can see. And yes, there's. There's a little sludgy road, but like that's. You're not playing in the road. You know what I mean?
B
Yeah, no, I get it. Like. Like have you Christmas.
A
Okay, we're getting so off track.
B
We are. I was trying to find the song and it was. It came to me not even remotely.
A
The topic of today's.
B
But we're starting you off with some chit chat because it's a new. And we just had Christmas and you're all probably thinking that too. Unless you're in Florida like us and you don't experience the brown sludge. Or if you're in the countryside like. Anyways. Anyways, why are we here today? We are here today to talk about ways that you can stop diying your business strategy in 2026. So when you start a business, I'm gonna say, like, the best way to learn and grow and, you know, start your journey is free content. Am I right? Like, there, there is a plethora of free content.
A
Consuming free content.
B
Yes, yes. Like consuming free educational content. So many people, including. Hi, Hello. This is.
A
Hi. You're listening to the Heart and Hustle podcast.
B
You're listening to a piece of free content. And free content is incredible. I'm not going to, like, discount that. However, I think in your journey of entrepreneurship, there can come a point where you almost can get stuck or feel plateaued or just feel, I guess, unsure of your next move. And that's almost the point where if you keep returning to free content, it's only going to get you so far.
A
Yeah.
B
And I feel like there, there is just a limit to the amount of actual growth. And again, I'm not discounting free content. Like, we used it a frick ton when we were starting a business.
A
It can get you so far in certain seasons. And I don't just want to be like, oh, it can get you so far in the beginning of your business. Like, no, it can truly, like, there can be seasons where you're, you know, 10 years into business and you consume a piece of free content or dive into free resources on a specific niche or topic or whatever, and it can move the needle for you. But there are, there are just limitations to it and there's. There's only so much that it can do in certain seasons and others. You're just like, it's not going to get you anywhere in the season you may be in right now.
B
Yeah. So as we're in the new year, you're probably thinking, okay, I want to start 2026 off fresh. I want to get my business in order. I want to, like, you know, not that you have to wait for a new year to start new habits or, you know, get your ish together. However, it is also just a great time to do those things.
A
It's a natural, I feel like, reset, like in with our society's perception or approach to a new year. It is a very natural fresh start.
B
Yeah.
A
And so not that you can't do this any time of the year. So if you're listening to this another time of the year, take this also as just applicable. But let's be real. We're starting a new year now, and there is a natural reset or fresh start that is happening for all of us mentally, emotionally, right now. And it's an amazing time to take advantage of it as an entrepreneur.
B
Yeah. So as you are kind of thinking about the strategies that you want to implement this year or the tools that you want to start utilizing or different things that you want to start implementing, there, in our opinion, is a limit to the amount that you can do by yourself. And I, again, I'm not discounting. You can do a lot by yourself. You are a bad ass and you are incredible. But I think I just. And we'll share examples as we keep going. But there is, there's oftentimes a limit when you feel stuck, when you feel plateaued. I think I said that already. But it's like that messy middle stage of business where you're not necessarily a beginner, but you're also not where you want to be. And you're just like, how do I progress? How do I keep growing year by year and getting better? And oftentimes we find that you, like, can only do that in a silo by yourself in your business for so long.
A
Yeah, yeah. And I want to encourage to. If you're listening to this and you're like, okay, well, I am a beginner stage, so is this where I consume only free content and this doesn't apply to me? I kind of want to challenge you. Listen to this whole episode. I don't care where you're at in business. I don't care if you started yesterday or you started a decade ago. I truly do not care. I want you to listen to this. We're actually going to give you a few questions you can ask yourself later on to kind of like almost self identify or self assess where you're at in business. And I just listen to the whole thing. If you are an entrepreneur wanting to like take 20, 26 by the horns, listen to this whole episode. So we wanted to kind of share, starting off like a little personal example of a time where we kind of tried to DIY something in our business.
B
To a sense when we were in that season of kind of like the messy middle. And again, it could still be the messy beginning. It's just like where you feel like you're, you're trying to go up a hill and there could be a myriad of things that are going wrong, but it's like you're not gaining traction in your business and everything that you are trying to do feels like it's not.
A
Working or you don't know how to do something and you fully acknowledge that and you're kind of like, okay, well let me try to learn it or figure it out, or whatever. So what we did and this was like, to give you some, some context, this was years into being entrepreneurs. This was years into having, you know, very successful photography businesses, coaching, education. We were, we had the heart and the heart was like, you know, a seven figure a year business. Like we were doing great, quote, unquote great. And we were like, okay, we want to do this next thing in our business, so let's hire some like skilled people, skilled contractors to do this work for us because we don't know it. And we had, I think, the self awareness to kind of assess. Like we don't know how to fully run level. Yeah, we don't know how to run this area of the next level of our business. So we're going to outsource it, which I commend to past Evie and Lindsey in that.
B
And it's not, we're not even hating on outsourcing because outsourcing is great, fantastic. And I feel like we've shared this before and maybe the mistakes, like the four business mistakes episode, which I think came out last month, but it, I think instead of, of. I guess the point being instead of like getting help in the sense of like hiring a coach or like learning the skill ourselves, not that we have to be experts at it by any means, but. But just even becoming knowledgeable and aware of the skill that we were trying to grow to specifically for the heart. I think this was just like trying to turn our courses into like an evergreen machine. We were really good at live launching just to give some more context to this example. And we were trying for years to turn our, like, ever. Or sorry, turn our live launching method into like an evergreen product or an evergreen system so our courses could just sell on autopilot without doing like a live launch funnel.
A
Backend funnels. Not live launch funnels, evergreen funnels, which are very different formats with Facebook ads and things like that. That was kind of like the email.
B
List funnels and all the things.
A
Yeah. And we knew the format of funnels as it came to live launches and you know, certain things within that. We knew all sorts of stuff within that. But in the evergreen world, it can be completely different. And we were like, okay, we don't. We are, we're not pros at this.
B
We know nothing.
A
So let's hire people to do it for us instead of. I think the thing that both of us kind of regret and wish we had done was hiring a coach or an Advisor to walk us through what we needed.
B
Like, strategy.
A
Yes.
B
Because I, I, I think what we did, and we've shared this before on the show, like I said, but we blindly, we kind of like, almost took the strategy into our own hands a little bit and just then blindly outsourced the actual job.
A
Yeah.
B
Of like doing ads, doing funnels to experts. Yeah. And again, that's not bad. But I think as the CEO or as, like, the owner of your business, even when you're outsourcing, you have to know where you're going and how to get there strategically.
A
You have to know enough to be able to properly guide and manage.
B
Yeah. The independent. Yes.
A
Like a contractor, Whoever you're outsourcing to, you have to know enough to be able to kind of stay in your CEO role or either. Yeah. Things, things can go south quickly if you really, like, don't understand. So not that outsourcing is bad. We're very grateful we outsourced in so many areas of business, including that one. I just wish that's one area that I can look back on and be like, I'm so grateful for the moments and the times that I have invested in a coach, in a mentor in education. But that's one that I can look at and be like that significantly, I think, hindered our growth.
B
It's because we took the money that we could have used to invest in a business coach or a strategist or an advisor, and we threw it blindly at, like, experts and then expected them to, like, do it for us.
A
Yeah.
B
Which again, to an extent, like, independent contractor does that. But if you don't know how to manage them, if you don't know where you're going, which is kind of where we're getting to in this episode of, like, that going it on your own can only get you so far. Going and learning for free on the Internet can only get you so far. And there comes a point in your business, business where hiring a coach, hiring a business coach or a strategist, if you will, can be oftentimes what you need to reach the next level and to scale your business when you've felt that plateau. And we're going to get into that.
A
Okay, so we're going to talk about, like, what does coaching actually do for your business? Like, if you've ever considered investing in a business coach, like, what does that actually typically look like? What have we seen in our own journeys, as in investing into coaches, coaches, mentors, or being coaches? Like, what have we seen? Clarity and direction. Number one, it gets you out of that? Like should I spiral? Like should I do this? Should I do this, Should I do this? Does this, is this even working? How do I assess if it's working? What, what is making sense? Like should I Clarity and direction, accountability that actually walks you step by step.
B
Versus you just like guessing and trying to do something yourself.
A
I think here's the thing too. I've had a lot of conversations with people over the years who have been like, hey, I. I'm really interested in investing in a coach, but I, I just, I know that I could learn this on my own. And it's, I've genuinely had conversations with, with.
B
You mean like almost like not free education but like a course or like a paid.
A
No. Yeah, yeah. Like, like somebody who's like, hey, I'm interested in investing in a coach, but I also know that I could learn this on my own. Like free education, free information, podcasts, YouTube.
B
Like, well, I feel like you could still also learn it, quote unquote on your own with, with a, like a paid, like taking a course that you still have to self manage.
A
That's true. I was thinking like free information, but yes, also paid even, or even a workshop.
B
Like taking. Going to a workshop, learning something or a conference, what have you and then having to then come home and, and do it yourself or, or regurgitate the information and turn that into actionable.
A
Yeah. Because that's the thing. It's there. The accountability is one of the things, one of the biggest things that I am obsessed with with coaching both for myself and invest for myself. I love investing in a one on one coach, but also as a coach, it is one of the biggest and most powerful things I see because you are getting very. Which I think we kind of get into.
B
Yeah.
A
The next one is strategy that's custom to your goals, which you can't get.
B
You can't get anything that's custom like.
A
That with any other form.
B
With free. Obviously not. But then even, even taking a course or attending a conference or attending a workshop, it's. It's incredible information. Yes. Don't get me wrong. And we're not dissing on, on we.
A
Host workshops that we believe in fully and have had people come to and be like that's life changing.
B
Yes. But even when I started my photography business, I took courses and workshops and different things like that. So it's like there is value in all forms of paid education, but it's not custom in the way that one on one coaching can get you.
A
One on one coaching is customized Strategy and direction and guidance and information for you. It, it can trim out all the noise of like, dude, this is my situation. Yeah.
B
It's like, this is where I'm at. And from your expertise, look at my situation and please.
A
My goals, my strengths, my weaknesses, everything. It's not only customized to you, but then the beauty of one on one coaching, especially if you do like, like ongoing. And what I mean by that is it's more than just one single singular call. So like monthly calls or whatever, you have that accountability. You have like somebody walking with you step by step through, you know, each phase. Okay, phase one, we're gonna work on these three things and I'm gonna walk you through that up until our next call. You're gonna have that accomplished by the next call. Okay, the next call. Awesome. Here's phase two.
B
And you have that history. Yes.
A
Of.
B
Of working together. Yes. And the accountability of, I think as the student in that scenario, you know that. Okay. Your coach just gave you custom advice and, and strategies and tools and homework essentially. And it says, okay, go do this. And now it's like, I, I find, and this might depend on your personality, but I think a lot of people need almost like that accountability to like force them to do it.
A
Like, I'm, I, I have a few students I'm working with actively right now who, when we were initially discussing, they were like, I really work well with a clear deadline. And that's the hardest part as an entrepreneur. That like I did really well in school when there was like a test due by X date or, or in like corporate. Yes.
B
I mean it doesn't have to be corporate, but like when you have like a boss that tells you what to do, I feel like I don't struggle with this as much because I'm like, maybe just like, I don't know. Well, maybe I don't know what Andrew struggles like kind of being on his own and like what he does in his business is completely up to him. And I think a lot of people are that way where it's like, it's hard to, to make movement with no, like, structure.
A
And that's the thing. There's, there's so much beauty with one on one coaching. Because something that I work with or work on with my students is I not only help them by being like, okay, here's, here's your deadlines, like, and I'll assign due dates to certain aspects of like the homework or the assignments or the work that I'm sending them off of a call. Um, so I'LL not only help them in that sense, but then one of the things that we often focus on, if a student or a entrepreneur comes to me and is like, hey, I struggle with this, I'll be like, awesome, let's have at least one conversation. Or let me give you some resources to help us work on the self discipline and coming up with a format, formula, structure, system within your business that allows you. Because I can't. I mean, unless you want to continue investing in me as your coach indefinitely, that's fine.
B
But also, like, you're like, I will accept that.
A
But like, realistically, let's be real, I'm probably not going to walk with you month by month through the rest of your business career. So, like, I want as your coach to come in, and that's something that I love doing, is to give you.
B
The tools to be able to learn how to do this yourself. Eventually.
A
Yes.
B
So that you.
A
But it's like in the immediate when you feel stuck in the mire and you're like, I just can't get out of this. I, I don't know what to do. I feel like there are a million options around me or I, I feel totally lost altogether. I, I feel like I have no options in front of me. Whatever that, whatever you're feeling, I will come alongside you and let's work on it. I will give you accountability. I will give you deadlines. Like, we will work on this together. I'll give you like, structure, clear strategy, aligned for you. But then let's also work on that. That area of weakness, which I have been there too, which is part of why I'm passionate about it, is let's work on that area of weakness, of feeling like, I don't want you to walk away from coaching being like, yes, I got so much momentum over the last six months or three months or 12 months, however long, like, each student will do coaching with me. I don't want you to feel like, yes, I did it and then I just send you off and to do.
B
It by yourself now.
A
Figure it all out again. Yeah, in that area of like, you know, deadlines and structures.
B
So, like, the goal of working with a coach would be to supercharge and like have that accountability in the moment. But also a good coach should be teaching you how to then eventually do it yourself. Like that. That would be the. Yeah, that's why it's custom and that's why it's, it's more valuable, in my opinion, than even paid education. That's not custom because obviously anything that's custom. Is gonna be.
A
It depends though, on what you're needing and wanting, which we're gonna get to. Yeah. Cause there are times where I'm like, I've truthfully had a conversation with an entrepreneur. I mean, many. But like this, you know, there have been situations where I have been having a conversation with an entrepreneur and they've been asking, like, should I come to your workshop or should I come to, you know, one on one coaching or even somebody else's like, hey, I'm looking at this, this other person's workshop, and I'm debating between this workshop or your coaching. And I will genuinely like, like have a discussion with them and be like, I think you need a workshop right now.
B
Yeah.
A
I truly think that's what's gonna like kickstart what you need.
B
I also love though, I think Evie at one point in time was doing consult calls for. What was it? Was it the heart conference?
A
Yeah, it was the conference.
B
I think it was the conference. And like, that was her job. I mean, I also had that job and we were splitting the calls. And I remember, and to be fair, that on. This is a great point to you as being like, hey, I'm gonna tell you truthfully what you need in to be a good fit for you. But I remember you were telling me and you were like, so, yeah, I did a consult call for the conference and I just. Wow. It just turned out that what this girl needed was one on one coaching with me.
A
She booked me.
B
You're like. And I was like, thank you so much for being an ambassador for the heart and selling another ticket. Not well.
A
What's funny is that that student did coaching with me and then came to a workshop because that was the thing.
B
Oh, okay. Okay. Wait, who was it? Oh, you don't.
A
I don't. I don't know if that. I think that's fine. It was Frankie. Oh, yeah, she. But she was.
B
It's because she was in Australia.
A
She was coming from Australia. And what she was describing that she wanted was not like, conference, not the conference.
B
Yeah.
A
But then we weren't planning to do another workshop for like a year and a half. And she was like, I have really considered coaching. Anyways.
B
We love that. Anyways, to. To everybody.
A
She reinvested in the heart. Thank you, Frankie.
B
We love you.
A
Anyways, I thought it was funny.
B
Okay, hold on. A couple more things.
A
We got derailed on our.
B
On tangible transformations that a coach can bring. Abby mention a few. The other ones that I also want to mention here are mindset transformations. And I think again this, this is something that I think one on one custom coaching can be so powerful because again you're not, you can take a course or a workshop or a conference that is speaking mostly. And not that those things don't touch on mindset at all, but oftentimes again it. Because it's like one to many coaching or not coaching one to many education. It's not talking about the nuances of someone's specific mindset hurdles. And this is something that I love doing with coaching. I know you do too, of just like sitting down and actually hearing where someone's at with their mindset and like what block is preventing them from going to the next step. And sometimes it could genuinely just be like, oh hey, here's a actual tangible tip or strategy that you just physically don't know that I'm going to share with you and like we'll work through that together. But sometimes I think it's mental blocks and it's, it's mindset. Like I guess blocks is the best word I can think of in the sense that you are almost self sabotaging yourself and you can't get out of that and you need somebody to speak face to face virtually or in person and be like, hey, I see the spiral that you're in and I'm gonna just speak straight to that and let you know you're better than that and shoot it to you straight. And I think sometimes that's what is so powerful in one on one coaching too is that you have the ab. In, in a vulnerable, safe relationship between a coach and a student where you can like speak to them specifically and then as the recipient like the student you can receive like something that if, if you pick the right coach, I think like can be truly transformational in your business because it's, it's hitting on that like the mindset blocks that I think so often like we all struggle with at one point another and we don't all have the same mindset blocks. But I think we all can get caught in the, the just the world of entrepreneurship. So the what the quagmire.
A
Quagmire.
B
That's a 10 point word. But you know what I'm saying, like it's 100%. It's so being an entrepreneur is hard, y'. All. We're doing it often alone. Which I think is also why coaching can be so powerful. To almost have someone step into the arena with you.
A
Yeah.
B
And be like, this is what you're struggling with. I can see that based on knowing you and learning with you and things like that and, like, learning your business, this is what you need. And also, this is how you get your ish together. I'm gonna, like, speak directly to that.
A
Well, I think that's like, you gain confidence because you have clarity now because somebody is coming in, and that's the point. Good for you. The, the perspective, too. I've. I've described this many times as sometimes with. With coaching or with, with entrepreneurship, it's very easy to be like, but I know this. Like, I've experienced this personally as a coach who helps people and strategize, build strategies, build systems, help, you know, whatever. Thousands and thousands of entrepreneurs at this.
B
Point, it's like you're not actually telling you anything that you didn't technically already know.
A
Sometimes. Sometimes it's truly like, sometimes I've invested in a coach and been like, I literally knew none of that. That was so helpful. Thank you. But there are also some times where I know, like, I'm thinking about investing in a coach, and I'm like, I know. I know this. I know. I know this. And I've had students come to me and say the same thing. They're like, I, I. But I know this. I, I could help somebody else build this strategy or, like, sometimes be in.
B
The recipient seat and have somebody else either confirm what you know so that you have more confirmation and more confidence in that clarity, or you just need to hear it sometimes from somebody else.
A
But here's the thing, too. It's more sometimes than just being reminded or hearing it from somebody else. The, the, the way that I view it for my coaching clients, but also for myself at times is there are completely different perspectives. I always view it as like, Like a, A, A maze. And when you are in the maze, it is a completely different experience and a completely different perspective than somebody who's in a hot air balloon above the maze.
B
Like a bird's eye view.
A
And it's, it's like you could be sitting in that hot air balloon and guiding, you know, a mentee of yours and be like, turn left. Turn right. That's a roadblock. Don't go that direction, whatever, because you.
B
Have a, Like a, A different perspective.
A
Completely different perspective of their business, their goals, their route, but when you're in that, you can't. And again, this is where I've, like, talked to entrepreneurs before who are like, hey, I'm considering it. I'm like, here's, here's my analogy. They're like, but I feel Like, I know this, I'm like, here's my analogy, here's the maze. You could navigate this on your own. Like for certain entrepreneurs, I'm like, you truly could get through this maze on your own. I genuinely believe that. However, it is most likely going to be so much less stressful, so much faster of a result or getting out of that maze, you're going to avoid so many dead ends. You're going to avoid, you know, frustration, obstacles. You're going to feel so much more peace having somebody in that bird's eye view who's going to help guide you through it. Even if you technically know some of the things, it's like, okay, but which turn first. Yeah, like, and different things. So that's another way. It's like sometimes you just need the perspective shift. You need somebody else in the bird's eye view looking at your business, looking at your goals, looking at your strengths, your weaknesses and, and you know, having a different perspective because you're, you're too close to the problem to see it clearly.
B
Yep.

A
Yeah. Some of our favorite products that we've used from primarily pure are their charcoal deodorant, the cleansing oil, their lavender complexion mist, and their clarity serum. Like every freaking product of theirs, we're not kidding. Knocks it out of the park as far as quality and making our skin feel incredible.

Even if you're placing yourself and looking and trying to look at your business from a bird's eye perspective, which you should regularly do. But because it's your baby, because you're in it day to day, it's always going to be helpful to have somebody that's completely outside come in, especially an expert in the nation, in the industry that you're in, look at it and give you advice from that perspective.
A
And it's. I think something beautiful too is like when, when choosing a coach, look at somebody that you're like, I, I truly see you doing incredibly well in this area that I'm wanting help in. But also one thing I really encourage, and I, I do personally, I know Lindsay does too, is I look when I'm looking to invest in a coach or a mentor, I really assess does. Is this person building a life as well as the business that aligns with what I'm wanting.
B
Yeah. Because like worldview values.
A
Yeah. Because here's the thing. There are some incredible entrepreneurs out there who know how to build really incredible things within their business or, you know, business models or whatever. And it's phenomenal. And they have a lot of knowledge. But their, you know, their values or what they are ultimately building towards or different things may be a disconnect from what you're ultimately wanting. So, you know, there, there's an element of pay attention to do I see them succeeding or doing well or having done what I am wanting to do, that's a big thing. But also are they building a life and a business that I am also.
B
Wanting my life and business to look like.
A
To look. Yeah. Obviously you're not like trying to like.
B
Copy and be like the essence of like the, the value side, like the value system. Do you admire the way that they are building their life.
A
Yeah. Because that's the thing too is it's like I'm even thinking there have been some. Some incredible entrepreneurs that I've looked at over the years and considered like, maybe I should invest in like a mentorship or coaching with. But then. And it's no offense and no shade to them, but I'm like, they're. They're very cutthroat in their approach, which is part of why they've been so successful. But like, they are. They are not afraid to kind of like savagely, you know, make deals or do certain things. And I just look at myself and I'm like, I don't know if that's aligned.
B
So even if like they told you to do something, it's like that because you're just completely different people when you have different values and worldviews, possibly it. It could not be the great, like the best fit.
A
Yeah. So paying attention to that, I mean that. I guess that's a bonus tip of the, like, how to choose a good coach. But that's just something I wanted to align with is like, or. Or bring in is make sure you're aligned with the coach and the mentor because then that person is able to sit in that bird's eye view and really help. And you feel confident and excited because you know that they understand what you're ultimately trying to build and the route that you want to take to get there. And like, it's just, it's life changing. So.
B
Okay, so now we're gonna go through. If you're. If you're following along and you're like, yes, I am picking up what you're putting down, but am I in the season that I need a coach right now? And so we're gonna go through a couple or five specific signs and we're gonna unpack them pretty quickly. And basically, if you hear these and they apply to you, they could be a sign that you are in the season and you business situation that you could benefit highly from a coach. Yeah. All right, so sign number one is that you're hitting your goals, but you're exhausted. So this is for my burnt out ladies and mannies. Burnout is real. And if you don't have the systems in place and you've been successful, but by being successful, that's ultimately meant like you're white knuckling your business through brute force and hustle, which, hey, we've all. We've not all, but we've been there and it, it works. But you're.
A
It's not sustainable.
B
It's not sustainable and your life is at a detriment and you almost. It's. It's not like you need to hire a coach because you need more business. You need to hire a coach to help you get out of the cycle of burnout and hustle that you're in. So that's sign number one.
A
You have to build systems. You have to change the way your business is currently operating, which takes like.
B
Digging and like excavating and almost like undoing a lot of what you have. Have built innately.
A
Yeah, that sounded scary when you said undoing a lot of what you've built.
B
Let's. I mean, I don't wanna re.
A
Reformatting.
B
I don't mean like throwing it away, but, but if you've built a certain way and that certain way has led to a cycle of hustle that you.
A
You'Re on a hamster wheel.
B
It's like you have to go back a few steps and like, tweak and undo and I feel like excavate was a great word. Yeah, I'm gonna go with it. I love it.
A
Okay, so that's one sign you are hitting your goal, but you're exhausted. Sign number two is that you have a big vision but no clear path. So this could look like you have a million ideas, but you don't know which one is worthwhile. So you are probably a multi passionate entrepreneur if that's the case, and you always have new business ideas running through your head and you feel really overwhelmed by which one it makes the most sense. Sense for me, for my business for this season, or you have one clear idea, like you've narrowed it down. You have really honed in on. This is the thing I want to do. I have no idea how to make it happen and I want to encourage. This could possibly be a very, very beginning of your business. Like, I have coached many entrepreneurs over the years who are like, I'm at day one or day two.
B
I haven't even started a business. I have an idea.
A
Yes. And I, I just want to make sure I set this. I go about this the right way. Like, I've coached many people in the beginning stages. I think that's often a misunderstanding that.
B
You think you have to have it all together before you hire a coach.
A
Or you have, you have to have gone a certain, like, distance down the road of building your business.
B
Like, have your big girl pants on.
A
Yeah. Like, and I'm. Again, there are times where I've had a consultation with a potential coaching client. And I've told them, this is not the season. Here are some resources. Go consume this free information and bootstrap it for, you know, the next X number of months or whatever, and then maybe come back and like, let's talk. I have genuinely turned away people from coaching and been like, this is not the season for you in this beginning stage of where you're at. But there are also many entrepreneurs who have come to me and I've been like, I see your brilliance right now. I think you are perfectly right that this is going to give you the roadmap. Like, you're sitting there with an idea and absolutely zero idea how to, you know, know, implement it. And sometimes it's. It's more than that, or there's a lot of nuance to that. Maybe you have a lot of ideas and you need that perspective, whatever it is. There's. You often like, this could be 10 years into business, this could be 10 days into business. So just keep that in mind. You have one clear idea, but you just don't know how to make it happen. And. Or you're overwhelmed by the noise of all the advice. Like, there's just so much spinning around.
B
A lot of free information out there.
A
In the entrepreneur world. And you're like, I. This isn't giving me clarity. This is making me feel more overwhelmed. So that's sign number two. Have a big vision, but no clear path.
B
All right. Sign number three is that you keep circling the same problems. Was that Katy Perry song Circle the Drain? Well, that came out of nowhere. That's not even a popular song anyways. So you, you could be. Or. Sorry. It could be that you don't know what's wrong, or it could be that you do know what's wrong, but you just don't know how to fix it, and you need someone. I feel like we kind of hit on this a little bit before we got into the signs. But you need someone with a different perspective because whether you know the problem or not, you know that you're. You're circling the drain and you don't know how to get out of it, and you need different perspective. And I feel like this can be a frustrating place to be in, especially if the free information that you're getting isn't working or, or you're just like, I. I'm stuck in the same problem and it's clearly a problem and I just, I need help getting out of it. I need different perspective. I need new ideas. I need somebody with, to come into my business with a bird's eye perspective, like the balloon analogy that Evie said earlier. And, like, look at it and give me custom help, because doing it myself is not working. I'm circling the drain. So that's sign number three. You keep circling the same problem.
A
Sign number four is that you feel like you've outgrown your current season. And what I mean by that is maybe what's worked in the past for you is not currently working or. Or it feels outdated or misaligned, like, maybe it's starting to put you onto that hamster wheel and you're like, this is always. This worked for me in the first few years of business, and it helped me build my business, but I see that this is not sustainable, and I need to do something different, and I don't know how to do it. I've outgrown what I knew, and now I need guidance and support in building something different or building a different system within it. So that could look like a million things. But you're kind of feeling like, like, I've outgrown this. And maybe it's. I'm ready to diversify my revenue streams. Maybe it's that I'm ready to build something in addition, a passive income stream or, you know, something on the side. Whatever it is, you just feel like you've outgrown what worked in the past and you need support in getting into what's next.
B
I also feel like a. A spin on that could also be that you've had success in the past, but, like, the times have moved on, on because technology is always growing. Things always change in entrepreneurship, and, like, the successful old way of doing something is now no longer working, which is a different form about growing it in a way. So that could also apply to you. Sign number four, last one. Sign number five is you are ready to invest in results just. Or not just free resources. So this is for the person that's sitting here listening, and you almost even kind of knew before we got to all five of these signs that you were like, I'm just gonna get called out. I just know. I just know. It's like, I feel like this, like, a little gut punch. Not punch, but, like, little gut check in your spirit of, like, you've realized and you just have fully understood that free resources can only get you so far. And you know you're ready for the next level. You're ready for customized business strategy and help and free info and hacks and tips online on those little carousels and on Pinterest for blog posts like that can only get you so far. And so this is just a little reminder that you already knew that you need. Need a coach. And we're just here to verbalize and call you out lovingly. Lovingly.
A
Well, because that's the thing too, is, is sometimes you have invested in, like, maybe your time, you've invested a lot of time in consuming a lot of really valuable information, but then you just kind of stockpile your library knowledge of, like, resources and information, but you're not actually, like a strategy, but you're. Yeah, you haven't built out either a strategy or you haven't implemented something that's actually generating for you. So, like, sign number five, in my opinion, is that you are tired of just more information and you are ready for results. Yeah, like, you're tired of just consuming resources, whether they're free or paid. You're ready to see results and you want everything that we've been talking about of, like, the. The benefit and the power of coaching. It's probably a pretty big indicator. Even if it's scary, even if it's a big investment, it. It's probably a big indicator.
B
True. So, okay, we're gonna. Those were the five signs. If any of that is. Is for you, then it's probably sign or time for a coach. And now this is the part of the episode where we're gonna lovingly, like, pitch ourselves. Although I will say before we pitch ourselves, you are not under any obligation to hire either one of us at all. Going back to kind of what Evie said, like, Like, I think it was what you said. When you are in a season where, you know, you need a coach and you start looking, make sure that the person that you're wanting to learn from has done what you're trying to do or. Or has at least some knowledge in the industry and, like, has seen victory in what you're trying to do. And also that I just shook my mic and also has a similar value system and worldview so that you know that what, like, the. The underlying worldview of what they're going to say and values of what they're going to say align with what you're wanting.
A
And here's the thing. Lindsay and I both love coaching. Like, I genuinely. It is one of my favorite things that I ever do, and I am so obsessed with the opportunity to pour into and serve and come alongside fellow entrepreneurs. It is. Is such a joy. But this episode is for anyone in any industry considering any mentor or any coach. And so, yes, Lindsay and I might touch on briefly, like, hey, we both Offer coaching. We do it separately, one on one coaching with, you know, many entrepreneurs. And the beginning of the year is an incredible time for you to kind of be like, okay, I'm ready to take this year seriously. Not that you don't take it seriously if you don't invest in coaching, but, but like this is, this is a time where you're ready to take the next step and maybe that step for you is coaching and you know, whatever. Like, we're going to touch on that briefly. But I also just want to encourage you if there has been somebody on your heart and mind to invest in as a mentor, a guide, a resource, somebody to come alongside you, take hands with you in your business and in this season. And as we've been talking, that person keeps popping into your head head that just little, little nudge that just might be the person for you. So we're going to share a little bit of like our hearts behind coaching and why we love it and you know, if you didn't know that we did coaching, you know, share a little bit of that but just hold that loosely because in no way, as long as you are receiving the support you need and you are feeling inspired, encouraged, I just given what you need in this season, that's all that I care about.
B
Well, and that's a win. Yes, that's why we're here. Yes, that's why we're here giving you like this podcast. Yes. And we like, we want to ultimately see you grow and see you thrive, which is a perfect segue, I feel like too why, why we both personally coach and I would even go beyond coaching. That's obviously one offer of what we do. But at the end of the day, I think think the reason we even at the beginning of our businesses added in educational aspects to obviously it started with photography was when you see I, I like success in something. You're seeing results, you see results that work and then you, you start getting people to be like, wait, how did you do that? There is, and I'm not saying being a coach is not for everybody, but there is something or not even a coach, it could, it could manifest itself in different ways. But educating others and sharing knowledge with others in that way is so fulfilling. Again, not for every life changing for.
A
Life changing as a coach.
B
Yes, because it's like you get to see somebody light up and, and come to you not knowing something or, or being stuck or being stagnant, being frustrated or even believing a lie oftentimes like getting stuck in like the mindset. Ha. Like the mindset. Mindset, hack. No, what am I trying to say? Spiral block, whatever you want to call it. And it is, it is the most fulfilling thing in the world to be able to actually know how to help somebody and look them in the eye and empower them and encourage them and then actually walk with them step by step through, like, the maze. The maze, yes, exactly. And watching them gain victory because of something that you shared. And it's not even like an ego thing, it's like genuinely out of a heart posture of, of love. And like, I want to see, like, I know it's possible because I did it and I'm me. Listen, if I can do it, you can do it. And it's, I think it's so fulfilling to watch somebody go from like, not confident in themselves or their skills or just, even if they are just like, not knowing what something. How to do it.
A
Yeah. Having any form of confusion or frustration.
B
Or stagnantness and like watching someone gain victory and like helping them do that, that is so fulfilling.
A
I literally, like, as you were talking, I was like. I don't know if I've actually, this isn't like a common thought that I think, but as you were talking, I was like, if I genuinely could do this for free, personally, like, maybe not every day, because there is an element that it's a little tiring to pour out everything. But also there is an element that.
B
I would argue you do do it.
A
For free on the podcast.
B
I mean, well, that's one way. But like, you give an education. Yes.
A
Well, for friends.
B
I'm. I'm just even thinking giveaways.
A
You're.
B
You may. Maybe that phrase was directly meaning I would get on a one on one call with somebody for free. Which is, I think what you're meaning.
A
Yeah.
B
But I'm also saying that like the free element of it is in how you outpour content out in the world in general.
A
Yeah.
B
And some of it you get paid for and some of it you don't.
A
Yeah, yeah, no, I was saying, like, if I, if I was in a position where like money didn't, like, like if I was. If, if money did not exist in the world and I did not, what.
B
A world that would be.
A
And I did not have a, you know, a career or a family or, you know, that I was. Whatever. If, if I was a billionaire and had all the free time in the world, whatever. I literally, you know, you love something and are doing something that is.
B
Yeah.
A
That's meant for you, that you were called to Do. Do.
B
If you would not get paid, I.
A
Literally would sit down week after week with student after student not getting paid a dime and still find the exact same level of joy and fulfillment in it. I genuinely would coach for free for the rest of my life.
B
And you're gonna get so many pitches. They're gonna be like, hi, Evie.
A
I do occasionally do giveaways.
B
Yeah.
A
Because I love it. And I know that not everyone can afford it, even if they know that they're ready and they're, you know, they're desperate for that. That support, that custom strategy. So, like, I do that absolutely on occasion. But I just. You were talking and you were like, it's so. It is, like, so fulfilling. And I'm like, I literally would do it for free.
B
Yeah.
A
And I genuinely. This, this. I don't know if I should say this on air. I might say it on air.
B
We love spicy.
A
I adore being a wedding photographer. And being a photographer, I really love it. And I have done it it for over 10 years at this point, and I don't see myself, like, stopping anytime soon. I don't know if I could say the same thing about going and shooting a wedding and editing a whole wedding day. I genuinely don't know if I could say that I would do it completely for free.
B
You freeze that in it. Okay. Yeah, Yeah, I understand.
A
Like, I love it. I love it, I love it, I love it, I love it.
B
But I mean, that's a pulse of, like, you. You were meant to pour into others in that way.
A
Yeah. It's like, if I wasn't getting paid and I was shooting a wedding every weekend, I don't think I would. I don't think I would not do that for free.
B
I would not do that for free.
A
Coaching is a different story. Like an entire, you know, eight, nine hour coaching day I would do for free.
B
I would do like a couple for free in one day. I don't know if I could do nine hours back to back for free. But I understand the heart would. But, you know, I would not do a wedding for free. So I'm. I'm on. I'm. I understand. I'm picking up what you're putting down.
A
We're on the same page. Well, I think there's something to like, just to share a little at least from me, a little, like, anecdotal story. And I truly, right now I'm having, like, I had the thought pop into my head and I was like, shoot. I forget the exact numbers, but I'm just gonna. I'M just gonna throw it out. I had a coaching student last year that I sat down with and it was one of those moments. It was one of those like light bulb like things. Just you, when you see this, when you see this in a, in a entrepreneur, it is just, oh, this is why it's so freaking worthwhile. When this specific entrepreneur came to me, this person was making, I think the previous year they had hit about. I think it was, I think it was either 20. The, the two numbers that are in my head are 24,000 for the entire year before of like revenue or 37,000, which I know that's like two random numbers, but those are the two that are in my head.
B
So hold those.
A
It was like 24,000 or 37,000. We went through, I believe it was six or eight months of coaching. I'd have to actually think it through. We work together for quite a bit.
B
Of time, which I feel like not that one on one and when I mean one on one, I mean like a one off is like a one time call. But I often find that the longer you coach and again, I'm not saying like indefinitely, but I feel like enough.
A
To get longer of a Runway where you can break it down and have the accountability and step by step I.
B
Find that the students that do that with me.
A
Yes.
B
Get, get more out of it than just like a one off.
A
100. Yeah. So I did, I. It actually started with this person at the beginning of a year, which was a perfect time. I actually didn't plan that at all. But, but I did start kind of the beginning of that like business year with this person. And from the beginning of that year from, from what was in their, their past revenue, like 20. Let's say I think it was 24,000. By the time time that person finished that next business year, it was 124,000 in their business.
B
Wait, 100. Let's just say that it was 24 to begin with. Even if that's, I'm pretty sure it was.
A
That's what just clicked in me.
B
Because it was 100k more.
A
Yes.
B
Where'd you get 37?
A
I don't remember. Okay. It could have been 37 to 124 and it was very close to like the addition. Whatever.
B
Let's just call that though a perfect 100k more.
A
It was though. And here's the thing, here's the thing. I'm, I, I hope I'm not like derailing this a little too much, but that student, that entrepreneur was willing to put in the work too. Yeah, because here's the thing. I could be the world's best business coach. Lindsay could be the world's best business coach. And we could come alongside you and give you tangible custom strategies, perspective, information, resources, account. And if you ultimately, as the entrepreneur, are not willing or able to do what it takes to do the work. And here's the thing too, there is flexibility in the sense that I work with some students where they're like, hey, I'm in the thick of busy season and I have very limited capacity to work on backend things, but I know I need to get this moving because whatever. Or moms who are like, hey, I have like two hours a day to work on my business and I'm very limited by that. And we can absolutely work with whatever your limitations are. But coaching is not a magic button.
B
No.
A
Investing in a coach does not necessarily mean that you're going to jump from 24, 000 to 124, 000 in your business.
B
I mean, neither would any form of free education or not free paid education. Like, you know what, Any, any education, whether it's customized coaching courses, anything like, it all requires you to be willing to show up and do the work. I will say coaching helps, I think a little bit more because it is custom and you have that accountability where you don't have it and other things.
A
That's the thing is you, it's. If you're feeling currently at the beginning of this year, you're feeling that kind of like that overwhelm of like, I don't know what I even need to do. I feel like that this is just overwhelming. I'm either drowning in the business I've currently built or it's the Sahara desert. And I just feel absolutely lost. Like, either way, the beauty of coaching is you have somebody who has gone before you, who has done what you want to do, who looks at your specific situation with your limitations, your strengths, your weaknesses, all of it, and, and comes alongside and says, okay, here's step one. Now let's do this together. Now step two, let's do this together. So if you're sitting here and you're like, okay, I, I love this thought, but you kind of scared me when you're like, you know, I have to put in the work. I. I don't want to grind. I like, I don't. That's not the life I want to build or I'm already burnt out or whatever you're feeling. That's not necessarily what we're saying.
B
Well and that's also the beauty of a coach is that a coach can see that and assess that within your business and help guide. And help guide. Okay. Hey, let's tackle, tackle this topic first and dive in here. This is what I think you need first. Let's work on this together and like bite size it together.
A
Tangible, the, the number one thing that is going to move you forward and let's focus on that one thing, intangible bite sized chunks and let's like move this momentum forward.
B
I almost feel like that could be sign number six. Not to go back but like sign number six, you're ready to put in the work.
A
That's true. Okay. Okay. Well, all that to say say if you have been listening to this and you're feeling that this is the year you've thought about coaching in the past or you've never even considered it, either way, you're just listening to this and you're like, I think this is what I need.
B
You're like diying. This is no longer working. I need support.
A
I need support. I need accountability. I need new perspective. I need customized strategy. I, I just need like that, that co CEO for a season to come alongside me to believe in my business, to assess my, help me get from point A to point B. If that's been like resonating with you, I just want to encourage you whether you ever have considered working with Lindsay and I or not, I don't care. I want you to, to really take that nudge, that desire, that pull and really take time to assess it and think can I make that happen this year? Because I truly believe that could be for many of you listening. Definitely not all many of you listening. I think that might be what you need in this year that could take you from next level, level one to level six.
B
Like and well, and it's, it's one of the only. We don't have very many regrets in our business even personally. Like, because I think all, all of life or like quote unquote mistakes or failures that you, you may make in your entrepreneurial journey always can, can be a learning lesson.
A
Yeah.
B
But I, I that we look back on that like one season of the heart and there, there is an element of like I wish we would have taken that money and invested in a business coach for that was an expert in what we were trying to do versus versus an independent contractor that was doing like the actual nitty gritty work for us, if that makes sense. So if you're in that season, no matter what season of Business, that is, we do both offer coaching and we are open. Yeah.
A
We'll put.
B
I'm saying that right now, but I'm assuming that in January we'll be open.
A
We will be, yeah. Usually I will say, I'm just going to say this now. We're filming this and recording this ahead. Oftentimes, I am usually booked a month to two months out for coaching.
B
So I. I can probably say I though won't be because I.
A
And you're coming off maternity.
B
Coming off of maternity. So I'm wide open.
A
So just know if you are considering it, I would encourage reaching out.
B
Yeah.
A
To us, to whoever you've been considering. We'll put our links to our coaching like pages where you can inquire those pages in the show notes, but also just DM us, like, DM me, DM Lindsay, whoever you feel the most. Like, I. I feel like this is the aligned fit. And I'm not just saying between us, I'm saying anybody, anybody, reach out to that person and be like, hey, here's what I'm thinking. I know I offer free coaching consults. Lindsay does too. If you're like, hey, I want to chat through. I want to explain what, where I'm at and what I'm wanting and see if you think this is a good fit or not. I. We will tell you. Honestly, we will. I've literally told people, no, I'm not the person to help you with that. Let me give you a recommendation or.
B
Especially because I don't want to take your money if what the help that you're needing. I know without a shot of a doubt, I can't help you or I would be like faking it. I'm not going to do that for.
A
You or to you.
B
Nope. We want you to find the. We want you to best fit and yeah, that's ultimately at the bottom line. Pulse of it. Like, I want you to thrive in your business and. And I want you to see you succeed and have like a life and a business that makes you thrive. And if I can help you do that, awesome. If Evie can help you do that, awesome. But ultimate, ultimately, that's the goal. If we can't help you do that, then we're gonna send you along your way and point you in a direction to someone who ideally can. Yeah.
A

Hosts: Evie McLeod & Lindsey Roman
Air Date: January 6, 2026
In this spirited and empowering episode, Evie and Lindsey kick off the year tackling a powerful question for creative entrepreneurs: “What if 2026 is the year you stopped DIY'ing your business strategy?” Drawing from their own experiences and years of business coaching, they discuss the limits of free information, the transformative impact of personalized business coaching, and how recognizing the right time to invest in tailored support can create true breakthroughs. With characteristic warmth and honesty, they break down the signs it's time to move beyond doing it all yourself—and exactly what a coach can offer.
On Outgrowing the DIY Approach:
"Going and learning for free on the Internet can only get you so far. There comes a point in your business where hiring a coach or a strategist can be oftentimes what you need to reach the next level and to scale your business when you've felt that plateau." – Lindsey (13:32)
On the Coach–Client Relationship:
"Let's work on that area of weakness... I don't want you to walk away from coaching being like, 'yes, I did it' and then I just send you off and you have to do it by yourself now." – Evie (20:51)
The Maze Analogy:
"When you are in the maze, it is a completely different experience and a completely different perspective than somebody who's in a hot air balloon above the maze." – Evie (27:24)
On Purposeful Coaching:
"You know you love something and are doing something that is meant for you, that you were called to do, if you would not get paid ... I would coach for free for the rest of my life." – Evie (49:22)
On Client Results:
“I had a coaching student last year ... went from $24,000 to $124,000 by the end of the next business year.” – Evie (53:16)
DIY will only take your business so far.
When you feel plateaued, exhausted, or unclear, custom support is often the catalyst you need.
Coaching provides more than knowledge.
It provides clarity, accountability, custom strategy, mindset transformation, and a much-needed outside perspective.
Choose your coach with intention.
Find someone who has achieved what you want and whose values align with yours.
You must be ready to do the work.
Coaching is a support system, not a shortcut—but it can dramatically speed up your progress and reduce the overwhelm.
2026 could be your year.
If you’re feeling called to stop doing everything yourself, consider this your invitation to step up and ask for the right help. As Evie reminded listeners, "It could take you from level one to level six." (57:48)
