So what's the play?

Interviewer 1
What's up, baby? We here. We here again, man, for this shout, man. And in my humble opinion, man, sitting with one of the best cornerbacks to ever play the game. Spent some time in Cleveland, spent some time in Pittsburgh, a Florida Gator, Mr. Joe Hayden.
Joe Haden
Come on, man. Thank you, brother. Thank you.
Interviewer 2
Listen, listen. Before we start, I know you know we from Louisiana, right?
Joe Haden
Yes, sir.
Interviewer 2
Can we get a wazam?
Joe Haden
You know, like, what's happening?
Interviewer 2
That's close enough.
Joe Haden
That's close enough.
Interviewer 2
That's close enough, man. And before we even started talking, it'll be sec, guys, to the debt, right? Yeah, I know. In my years at lsu, we beat the dog out of Florida. You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
Yeah, yeah.
Joe Haden
Your time, your time.
Interviewer 2
Yeah, my time, right? So I know there's. There's history there, you know? So my thing with. What, by me saying this, right, who has the better college, LSU or Florida, in your opinion? Because we gonna say what we say.
Joe Haden
This the thing. I'm not a liar. Right now. LSU got it going. You know what I'm saying? Like, my time when I was there, y' all wasn't rocking with us. I had Tebow, Percy, we had our time, and that was our time. Those three, four years we was there, nobody was rocking with us but Yalls, longevity burrow, all that descending, dude. So y' all got it. I'm going to be honest, but you know what I'm saying, sec, I respect. I love it, but we. We got to get there. Lsu.
Interviewer 1
I was talking to Lenny before you got here about, like, there's, like, this video. I don't even know if it's still on YouTube no more. It was of y', all, like, 08 team, like, throughout the year, like, practicing, fighting each other, doing, like, Big cat. I think y' all called it something else.
Joe Haden
Like mad drills.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, exactly.
Joe Haden
Yes. Doing that.
Interviewer 1
The Tebow speech.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Like, just that whole era of, like, dominant football, bro. Can you talk about that team a little bit? Like, obviously, you know, again, y' all guys national champions, right? So, like, can you talk about that team a little bit? The personalities, you know? What was your personality like then? You know what I mean, compared to entering the league, you know?
Joe Haden
It was crazy. We had a great team, bro. We had so much talent on that Team with Percy, with Tebow, with myself, with Major Wright, the Pouncey twins. Aaron Hernandez came in with us that class. So when we say different personalities, we got a lot of different things going on, you know what I'm saying? Cam Newton was my first roommate there. So him being back up to Tebow, like, just trying to figure out if he was going to get in. T Bo was the golden child, though. Like, he didn't do no wrong. He didn't drink, he didn't smoke, he didn't curse. He led by example, you know what I'm saying? Real God fearing man. And he worked hard, bro. Like, when we go to those weight rooms, those mat drills, all that stuff, it was crazy. So Urban Meyer, we was doing some of the mat drills, bro. Like when we were choking each other out, he would be locked up, bro, from some of the stuff that we did. But it grew character.
Interviewer 2
It grew character, but it made y' all right. It gave y' all that attitude where, like, I watched the documentary, see, I didn't know too much about y', all right. In the 2008 y' all era. And we were talking about different eras with different teams. I know you've seen LSU 2011 team, right? And also LSU 2019 team with Joe Burrow, right?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
How would you guys. How would you guys stood a chance against each those two teams that would
Interviewer 1
make a good game.
Joe Haden
I like us. Yeah, Honestly, I like us. Only team that I ever think that could beat us was the Hurricane, was the, uh. With Mary Reed and Clinton Portis. And they had backups that went to
Interviewer 1
the hall of Fame. Them in Ohio State.
Joe Haden
Them in Ohio State. They was going at it. But I say the only team I think that they could maybe probably beat us was the U. You know what I'm saying? I like us versus everybody else. Just Jenorris Jenkins on one side, me on the other side. Whoever your receivers, I like to see what's going on. You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 2
You can't give us a chance?
Joe Haden
No. It's a great game.
Interviewer 2
It's a game.
Joe Haden
I'm not going to just be like no lsu. Y' all got that one.
Interviewer 1
Hell, yeah.
Joe Haden
This one I'm standing on my 10. I like the Gators versus anybody. Miami might be able to get us out of the way, but anybody else is going to be. We going to fight.
Interviewer 1
No. You mentioned Cam Newton being your ruler.
Joe Haden
Cam Newton was the backup quarterback.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
But you also had. You got a quarterback background too, bro. Like, I Feel like people don't know enough about that. You know what I mean? Can you talk about, like, having a roommate in Cam Newton and I saw a story you said you walk in the crew B room. You was like, damn, it's Tim Tebow
Joe Haden
here, Cam Newton here.
Interviewer 1
Then I walk in the receiver room. It's Percy Harvin here. Murphy, Lewis Murphy. I think here at the same time, like, let me go be a db, bro.
Joe Haden
I was trying get in and play. I wanted to go there. They said I was going as an athlete, but I felt like I was going to be a quarterback. Nobody couldn't tell me I was going to play quarterback. Watching Michael Vic, I'm like, that's me. I'm about to do that. You know what I'm saying? So I got recruited there. And then when I got into that room and I seen Cam and he wasn't getting in and Tebow was in there and he was. I'm like this. Oh, I'm definitely not playing. Like, I can bounce. Let me go see what's up. Go to receiver. Percy there. I'm trying to play. Let me go to db. Corners wasn't as good there. We were solid. Coach Myers said, bro, you can start as a corner as a true freshman. If you don't like it, we'll trade you back to offense. I went there, got freshman All American, called my dad. I'm like, you trying to go to the league, son? Like, if you got freshman All American, like, that's something that we could do. Corner, five' eleven. You're not the tallest. Like, you can make something happen.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. Lockdown at that time, though. 5'11 type, 5'11 corner, too many of them.
Joe Haden
5'11 corner was cool. 5'11 quarterback. Not too many of them dudes was like, they looking at the quarterback. Short black dude.
Interviewer 1
Like, not prototype.
Joe Haden
We need you 6, 4, 250 and throwing that dot. You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
Yeah, man.
Interviewer 2
I want you to, like, you saying that now. Like, it's not. That's not normal. Right. Like you was the number three athlete in the nation. Yes, right. And just trying to find. Trying to find your niche, to make an automatic, like, impact as soon as you come on the field. Right. So from you saying you went from quarterback. Yeah, it's not going to work.
Joe Haden
Not happening.
Interviewer 2
Wide receiver, not going to work. Then go with then to go to cornerback. That shows like, you know, you're definitely different.
Joe Haden
Different, like different for sure. For sure. I think the thing that helped me out too was the quarterback Helped me to know the game, you know what I'm saying? I understand route concepts. Then I went to receiver. You know what's going on now I'm going to db, I got a tackle. They say we can't catch. You know what I'm saying? I'm over there knowing what's going on. Offense just getting more smooth, learning the techniques and stuff. Like cover twos, cover two, cover fours, cover four. You learn that. Now I'm looking like what they about to do. And if you run the slant and I know you're running the slant, there's nothing can't nobody do. I just gotta bait the quarterback and start playing with people. So once you get into that, that's when I'm like, oh, no. It's not even about just one on ones. That's when I first came into league. Playing corner. I'm gonna make sure he don't catch the ball. Boom, locked in. You start getting older, you start understanding his splits, his concepts are. I know what we got. What are they about to do? So that joint just gets small. Cheat code.
Interviewer 1
She cold.
Joe Haden
She cold.
Interviewer 1
What's awesome about that is I had a. You know, I wanted to ask you about when you're preparing for a receiver. Now we talk about NFL, right? When you're preparing for a receiver, do you ever weigh how good the quarterback is in that equation? You know what I mean?
Joe Haden
Like, yeah, 1000%. Cause it's not your. It takes. You gotta run the great route and the quarterback gotta put the ball there. Sometimes quarterback are throwing receivers open. There's. Sometimes I'm like, man, how did he get that there? There's nothing you could do. Great routes and great passes are always going to be great coverage. If you got a quarterback that's throwing a janky ball, nothing you can do. That joint is outran outright running comeback perfectly. You threw it inside. That makes me get another step. So I'm like, if your quarterback's not good, that makes you. You worse. And it's not your bad.
Interviewer 1
So, so, so. So a receiver is only as good as his quarterback. Yeah.
Joe Haden
Honestly. Because you can't. You mean you can only do so much if he putting the ball. Y' all work together. Everything works together.
Interviewer 1
I'm just happy you putting it out here.
Joe Haden
You got. Sorry, quarterbacks, they're not thr ball in the right spot, like in this time. And receivers got to be at the right spot. Some of that stuff. Quarterbacks got to see it open first. No quarterback I'm believing in this. He gonna be at that spot that time, I'm just throwing it regardless. So when you come off that bang banging, the ball's there instead of a dude waiting, giving me some time to come get it. Safety being able to break on you, setting people up. Yeah. Like they throwing concussion protocol balls.
Interviewer 1
Right. Which is why recovery speed at your position is. Is that's what matters, right?
Interviewer 2
For sure.
Interviewer 1
You mentioned something else about, like, throwing, about timing and throwing. And obviously that speaks to your quarterback background, that helping you be a better defender. So the. I guess the flip to that is, you know, there's also a saying that says a cornerback is also as only as good as his D line.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
Do you believe in that, or is that, you know, is that a misconception?
Joe Haden
No. 1,000%. If the quarterback standing like when I was playing versus AB that was the main thing, I would have him on the comeback. Your quarterback's able to scramble a little bit. That scramble drill, that extra. I got him on the comeback. Now he's going to turn up field and make it a comeback and go. So there's nothing I can do now. I'm guarding him for. Instead of three seconds when you got the D line coming after him. I know I got three. That comeback. Oh, I'm on it. It's a pick if he throws it. Now. Get off me. He turned it up field. Now I look like I'm beat on the comeback and go. I need you guys to get there. I got to come back. He get to come back and go, I'm beat. That's five seconds. Covering AB man to man, single high. Everybody got a job to do. D line. Y' all are doing one on ones the same way I'm doing one on ones, definitely. You got three seconds to beat your man. That left tackle, that guard, Y' all getting paid the big bucks, too. So everybody, like, everything works together. Ultimate team game.
Interviewer 2
And I know you speaking on AB, right, how competitive it was going against one on one against that man. Cause I had the.
Joe Haden
You got me on YouTube. That's what I'm saying. He got me looking crazy. And that's another route that's in the end zone. He ran the even. Ugh. Gave me off the line, goes out. Oh, where's out? Not coming.
Interviewer 2
He back up field.
Joe Haden
Somebody hit the quarterback, please. We doing one on ones. I'm looking crazy out here for sure.
Interviewer 1
Hey, but I will say, I would say DBs. No offense, bro. DBs are kind of unfair with that, bro. Like, we ran routes. Y' all playing where it's one on one y' all playing outside leveraging on a one on one take talking about oh, the safety would have been there to hit you.
Joe Haden
No, no, see, okay, no, no. It's, it's an offensive drill. Y' all supposed to be able to beat us on that. You know what I'm saying? Damn y' all supposed to you wood receivers routes on air if you you know what I'm saying. But for us DBs, we gonna say what we gotta say. But on the end of the day and it's a bad pass that's strapped.

Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Every day.
Joe Haden
Jg.
Interviewer 1
Jg every day.
Interviewer 2
Who's a monster?
Joe Haden
He was a monster. He was going 200 back to back
Interviewer 1
to Garden a B in. In, like, back to back. Like, as a db, right? Or just you, you know, like, what was your mindset going into practice, Right? The game. Like, in practice, you had to go and, like, show up.
Joe Haden
You bad.
Interviewer 1
Like, it was a game.
Joe Haden
You're getting right. You're trying to get right. And I think the one thing about it is too, like, I know you guys, you just want to be the best that you can be. And I don't think people understand just even from growing up, all you could do is be the best that you can be. Study the tape. Iron and sky don't lie. I'm watching the tape. I'm taking coaching. I like to be coach hard because I want to be the best. So going against them, it's like, if I can guard JG man to man. And when I was first in the league. No, Joe, you can pay the big bucks. You need to go there, follow these dudes around.
Interviewer 1
Mandatory.
Joe Haden
Mandatory. Study the tape on this receiver, the best receiver, because that's who you're gonna be governing. So having that mentality, it just makes it like every day. Did I get better? Did I get worse? Did JG beat me on the one on ones or did I get him?
Interviewer 1
Were you also the guy that like, you know, Because I've played on teams that have, you know, whether it's Xavier Howard, you know, who at the time was a top corner in the league, Denzel Ward, who we know from Cleveland, right? Like, like, I'm not taking reps with nobody but them but those guys. Like it has to be a big on, big moment every time we have a one on one. Did you approach that, like practice and, and those scenarios the same, right? Like, like it ain't no me going against the fourth string corner. Like, just so you can get better. Like, bro. Cause it's not that I don't want to do it to you, it's just that like my, my mental approach is a. Maybe it might be a little different, you know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
Like with the gel.
Interviewer 1
I know, like my release got to be there, got to be on point. My, my, ain't no wasted motion that needs to be. You know what I'm saying? So it's like as a db, which again, I will say you guys play one of the harder positions in the NFL.
Joe Haden
Thank you, my brother.
Interviewer 1
I will say thank you. Going backwards, trying to guard y' all is. Is insane. But like, I guess to answer to actual question, actually actual question, it's like, was that your approach and how do you think that, that, you know, help younger guys under you understand what it's like to be a pro and have that mentality every day you show up to practice against one of their best,
Joe Haden
not being afraid to compete, you know what I'm saying? Like, no. Not getting comfortable. Not like just resting on your morals. No, I'm Joe. This is what I do. I'm going in here every day I'm playing versus the best man. JG wanted to smoke too. So it's like when he lines up, he coming out there. No, it's not. No, Joe's out. We know what it is because that's going to show. Good on good, best on best. We get to watch these reps on film. The younger dudes get to see. Joe's not just going to go press somebody out for no reason if he's going to press somebody, he's going to press jg. And now you see he locked up the best on the squad. This is how you do it. You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 2
You said you're setting the standard.
Joe Haden
Thousand percent.
Interviewer 2
That is the standard, right? That's people not used to that, right?
Joe Haden
They're not.
Interviewer 2
They're not used to. In college, you know, we went to sec, right? So it was always the best versus the best.
Joe Haden
That's the only way, right?
Interviewer 2
So. And that's for you to get better at your position, you know, to. Or say, I know Joe, he might be a press guy, man. Try to beat him off the line
Joe Haden
thousand percent if you can. Yeah, for sure. You're going to work your releases because he going to try to put hands on you.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, no. 100%. 100%. Obviously, the game has been changing a lot, right? You see it becoming more of a pass heavy, offensive, you know, type of. With the rule changing type of league, you know. Do you feel like that's like a benefit to the DB or the receiver? Like, I just. Obviously it's a safety thing.
Joe Haden
I feel like the safety part is them going across the middle is good for the. For the receivers because you know, the consequences. You know what I'm saying? We were playing DBs, you played defense back in the day. You're trying to knock somebody's head off and it sounds you trying sleep. They saying it for real. And that's what we would do back in the day. And it would sound crazy, but that's just how you would hit. But now I think I can help them out for safety reason. They can go across the middle. Not as many consequences. But I think for DBs, it's tough. You can't really touch people like that. That's where you gotta get your mental right. You gotta start studying tape. You gotta start reading splits. You gotta start knowing down the distances and what's gonna happen before it happens. The younger dudes that you are you worried about, what's the call? You trying to figure out where the hell you need to be. So you like, oh, hold on, hold on Niggas get the motion in hold on. Who am I working with? The smoother that you are, the more that you know what's going on, the more relaxed you can be. So just studying the tape and knowing what's happening before it comes, I think that's what's gonna help out DBE's.
Interviewer 1

That's 100% true, right? And this speaking on the NFL aspect, who are some of the toughest? Give me your top five toughest guys you had to guard.
Joe Haden
Okay, I'm going with Antonio Brown.
Interviewer 1
Oh, man.
Joe Haden
I'm going with Calvin Johnson. I'm going with.
Interviewer 1
Hold on, wait, wait.
Joe Haden
Calvin Johnson. And I held my man at three for 25.
Interviewer 2
You heard me.
Joe Haden
Stamp. Stamp.
Commercial Announcer
Fire.
Interviewer 2
Fire.
Joe Haden
No tux.
Interviewer 2
Oh, my God.
Joe Haden
No tugs. Then we going with Julio Jones. Big who? Big Julio. And then we gonna go New York giants. Odell Beckham Jr. He gave me. He gave me work. I ain't gonna lie to you. He really did. I thought I was out there with a sprain groin, just trying to fight for the team. Joe, you're not hurt? I'm like, I am hurt, but I'm gonna go ahead and go out here and try to get it. Couldn't Open up all the way. Oh, they'll do me dirty.
Interviewer 1
This in Cleveland.
Joe Haden
This in Cleveland. Oh, man. I was in Cleveland, he was in New York.
Interviewer 2
So my question, I'll go back and look at that. That was like your prime almost. So I'm gonna say this. What was so different from each and every guy you just named?
Joe Haden
I would say Odell. And Odell's just quick and fast and could catch everything. His burst was unbelievable. Ab his toe tap on the sideline. If the ball is in the area, he's going to catch it. And then him and Ben, that thing helped him out too. Like I said, I gov it'll come back scrambling, scrambling that. So I'm beating and then Julio just saying, like, Calvin just beat. Big ass dudes. I'm normally better with bigger receivers because I'm quicker than them. I can get my hands on them. I can stay in front of you. Smaller dudes are normally tough, but Julio and Megatron was. They was big and strong and quick and fast, like, grabbed my shoulders and when they had me, I'm like, oh, no. It just threw me out the way for the slant. When he grabbed me, I'm like, oh, no.
Interviewer 2
Get off.
Commercial Announcer
Oh, no.
Joe Haden
Clinched up. I was like, okay, yeah, he's stronger than me.
Interviewer 2
So we named the past guys. Who would you be? I'm not gonna say afraid, but who would be your top guys?
Joe Haden
Now?
Interviewer 2
You know, you got Jamal, you got jets. Can you give me your top five? Now who would Joe Hayden love to compete against?
Joe Haden
Yeah, in my heyday, I want to smoke with everybody. So the best dudes I'm going with Jamar Chase. Yes. You know what I'm saying? Who else we got? Who else we got?
Interviewer 1
Did you see Tariq at all?
Joe Haden
I did, I did. I did. I saw him with Kansas City a couple of times.
Interviewer 1
Was. He still was kind of. He. They hadn't. They still was in.
Interviewer 2
Who was they?
Interviewer 1
Quarterback then, was it. It wasn't Mahomes, right? It was Ali Smith?
Joe Haden
I think so.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. It's Alex Smith. It was before my home took over. So he do.
Joe Haden
He ain't do too much. Yeah, he just too much. He was super fast, though. But right now, yeah, Jamar Chase is my favorite one. Justin Jefferson.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Puka looking crazy, but I'm like, I. I don't see the speed part. So I want to see what I don't know. I don't know what it was.
Interviewer 1
Is it Sean McVeigh?
Joe Haden
Is it Cooper Cup? Because I'm like, cooper cup is cool, but I'm Like, I don't know.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Is he him? You know what I'm saying? Jackson, Smith and Jigba looks ridiculous right now, but I like to see just a small receiver. His routes. Yeah, I seen him with them couple Slangos looking crazy.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. I think the biggest thing that I noticed, like, with guys like that. And we had. We talked to Zay Flowers as well. Right. With guys like. Guys like jsn, I feel like how Seattle chooses to use them makes it a matchup problem.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
Like, imagine you following a guy that's lined up in the back, right?
Joe Haden
Sure.
Interviewer 1
Now you, like, wait, do I line up on the left side? Do I line up in the middle? You know what I mean? Like, it's hard to match up with a guy like that, right? So it's hard to, you know, come up with a good defensive strategy or for you to actually have that battle go on. Like how back in the day where, you know, it was you got your Z receiver. You know what I mean? Have you ever had to guard anybody in. In that JSN type of role that we see today? Obviously the game is involved, right? But, like, have you ever had to guard anybody where essentially, like, you following them all over the field? You know what I mean?
Joe Haden
Nah, Normally the. I was with the exes, and they would just put them boys outside.
Julian Edelman
Right.
Joe Haden
You know what I'm saying? So I was gonna go left outside or right outside, period. Was looking at the bottom of the. Looking at the huddle on the bottom of their feet. They're going this way or that way, and we going to the outside. Yeah. So, yeah, the slot. Yeah, the slots are.
Interviewer 2
Different game.
Joe Haden
Yeah, different game.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Too much space, bro.
Joe Haden
What?
Interviewer 2
It's too much space.
Joe Haden
I'm good on that.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Get all the little tastes, you know, we gonna.
Interviewer 2
You know, I'm gonna get a little messy right now, right?
Joe Haden
Oh, Lord.
Interviewer 2
Yeah, I got to go ahead, brother. So, you know, I was doing my research. They brought up Jarvis and Odell name. And you did, like, you yawn.
Joe Haden
No, no, no, no, no. That wasn't for real.
Interviewer 1
That was Mike Tomlin.
Joe Haden
Mike Tomlin.
Interviewer 1
Yawn. Yeah.
Joe Haden
He yawned.
Interviewer 2
But you are the representation of your coach.
Joe Haden
Oh, see, that's what I'm saying. I knew it wasn't me directly. I knew it wasn't me directly. I'm saying never. Never to my good man. Yeah.
Interviewer 1
No. So he's playing. We was about to play you guys. I want to say this was right after Kobe year or during Kobe year, maybe.
Joe Haden
And.
Interviewer 1
And we play in Cleveland.
Joe Haden
Okay.
Interviewer 1
And Press conference the week before, asked Mike Tomlin, like, you know, how do you guys plan to stop Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham? I think it was like, more maybe our first year together, our second year together. Man, he yawned on like he was. He just like, ah. And like, yawn on camera. So then we played, I think, on Sunday Night Football. We ended up beating y' all 27, 21 to 7 or something like that.
Interviewer 2
See all that pressure come back on? You see what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
You don't remember, you know, and guess what? One of the. I don't know. I'm not sure who it was, but one of them did the. The yawn selling when they scored a touchdown.
Joe Haden
One of us did.
Interviewer 1
No, me.
Joe Haden
It was me.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
See what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
See, what year was this? I got to go back. I got to go back and.
Interviewer 1
No, because, I mean, this is like 2019, probably 2019. 2020.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
Right after Kobe year or right before COVID year.
Joe Haden
I would never disrespect y' all like that. Yeah. That's all I want to say on that. I would never disrespect y' all like that. I think Coach T might have been tired maybe.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
I hope he didn't mean disrespect, bro. No disrespect, bro. Yeah. In the film room, you always got love on the tape. And Odell, so hopefully he was just taught. He might have been quarterback. Yeah. You might have been talking about Bake, maybe. Oh. You know what I'm saying? Maybe that's he. They gotta get somebody to get it to him.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. Yeah.
Joe Haden
Hope not.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
So you didn't want to disrespect them.
Joe Haden
Never.
Interviewer 2
But listen, when y' all played against the 2017 Jacksonville Jaguars, the playoffs come, y' all wasn't even worried about us.
Joe Haden
We. That's what I'm saying. Y' all already beat us in the regular season, too, so I'm trying to figure out. I was spooked. I was locked in. I was locked in. And we lost Shayzir.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Joe Haden
You already toted the joint for 180 yards.
Interviewer 2
Yes.
Joe Haden
I'm like this. Listen, y' all better come in this joint locked in facts. So we didn't. You did what you had to do. Three touchdowns, spanked us, got us out the way, so.
Interviewer 2
Cause the first game, right? We played y' all in the regular season, 30. We beat y' all 30 to nine, right?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
I'm bringing up everything.
Joe Haden
Fuck it.
Interviewer 1
You stressing my dog out.
Interviewer 2
30 to nine. Right. So obviously that was probably my third or fourth performance professional game.
Joe Haden
That was in week five.
Interviewer 2
And we was talking about how the AFC nut is known for being physical.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
That was a physical ass game, because I think I had 28 carries, probably 30 carries that game. Can you tell me what was your mindset? My mindset wasn't like, damn, I'm playing against the fucking Pittsburgh Steelers. I've been watching y' all my entire life, and it's like, now I'm trying to adjust my game to not just running the ball.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
I got to worry about Mike, Sam Nickel, Will coming. Like, it's so much that's going through my mind that I couldn't really play how I wanted to until, like, the second half. I wasn't comfortable. So I just know for me, we the Jacksonville Jaguars. Y' all like, man, we about to play these. We about to play these fucking bums. Like, come on, now.
Joe Haden
That's what we was expecting and hoping, but you run the ball crazy. We were thinking Blake Borders. We got to make him beat us, right? End of the day, stack the box. Let Lenny, like, just stop him, and then, you know what I'm saying, we can hopefully win the game. But Yalls defense was unbelievable. Jalen Boye, all them boys, Mack Campbell. So y' all was getting picked sixes crazy. So, like, it just. We could never get ahead of the. We could never get ahead of. You was toting the ball crazy, calling people out, like, just running that joint.
Interviewer 2
Let me tell you about that.
Joe Haden
You was running the joint. I got returned the ball.
Interviewer 1
What's his name?
Joe Haden
Mike. Mike Mitchell.
Interviewer 1
Listen, I got respect, Mike Mitchell.
Interviewer 2
I got respect for, like.
Joe Haden
M trying to get he play. He trying to let.
Interviewer 2
But Joe know he, homie, was out there tripping. So I'm like. I said, look, I'm like. I'm like, brother, like, I don't know what you got. I'm not trying to even go there with you, but I'm like, I ain't one of them. I ain't no.
Joe Haden
Like, yeah, that's how he.
Interviewer 2
I kept telling him, like, bro, like, all right, it. We got our one on one. I'm like, come on, brother, let me see what you work. He went low. So in.
Joe Haden
In my eyes, he like this. Why you play a ball on the sideline? He like. I'm like, come on, what you thinking?
Interviewer 1
At the same time, you running behind and chasing.
Joe Haden
Slowed up a little bit. Yeah, this about to go down. You know what I'm saying? But he got him down. He Went. You know what I'm saying? Good contact. Yeah, I was. Yeah.
Interviewer 2
He wanted smoke definitely in a regular season, right?
Joe Haden
You know.
Interviewer 2
You know you gotta show effort, right?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
I scored the winning touchdown, a nine of yard touchdown. So I'm like, all right, it's over with Davis, 28 was. I'm like, I smoked him, Dustin. Yeah. You see Joe? Joe, you know, Joe showing the effort. I'm like, damn, he still touched me after I scored. I'm like, all right, so maybe you need, you know, brownie points to show he ain't quit. But, like, I feel like y' all mindset should have changed after that going into playing us in the playoffs, which it didn't because y' all said we. Not exact words.
Joe Haden
They're not worried. We not worrying about them.
Interviewer 2
We're about the Patriots.
Joe Haden
So I'm like.
Interviewer 2
I'm like, what the fuck about that?
Joe Haden
That was actually. Yeah, that was actually.
Interviewer 1
That bullets and bow material right there.
Joe Haden
We. We needed no reason to do that.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
When we lost Shazier, we didn't have linebacker in there, you know, Lost a leader. Lost the leader.
Commercial Announcer
Yeah.
Joe Haden
That was the best team I ever played on, though, bro. 2017, skill wise. A B. Le'Veon, Le'Veon Bell, Marte Bryant, you know what I'm saying, bro? Our offense was unbelievable. Young Juju, Young TJ Watt. You know what I'm saying? Like, the offense was crazy. And then the defense started getting. We just fumbled the bag.
Interviewer 2
My bad, bro.
Joe Haden
Fumbled the bag. Yeah, you. You did that to us. 45, 42, bro. We had the bye week and everything. I was out there, got the elevens.
Interviewer 2
Feel good.
Joe Haden
Sent from Jordan, like, oh, yeah, your playoff jones. Oh, yeah. Let's get it. Sweet.
Julian Edelman
Ew.
Interviewer 2
So now, this is another question, right? Do you feel like that bye week messed y' all up?
Joe Haden
I feel like we should have not been overlooking y', all, bro. Like, we really was like, nah, bro. This is Jacksonville. Blake Waters. We gonna go out there, stop Leonard. Yeah. Go out there and score some tutties. We got A.B. come on, man. What we doing? Bam.
Interviewer 2
Y' all had an injured AB Though. AB Was him all the way, but
Joe Haden
he was still spasm. Boye was right there all the time.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
He didn't crash.
Interviewer 1
That was also a good matchup. Watching. Watching that on. Watching that on tv. Every time ABM and Boy played, bro, that was. That was another good one's pocket.
Joe Haden
Like, boy, everybody, he was getting bigger. I'm like, that's great coverage.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, man.
Joe Haden
The standard right there.
Interviewer 1
That's what you was talking about just now. Ball placement. That ball placement with somebody that got a great catch radius. No matter who covering them. You know what I mean? If they're not getting their hands on the ball and the receiver can get
Joe Haden
their hands on the ball, you're going to get. Yeah, he's going to catch.
Interviewer 2
That sync him and Ben had together.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
See, I never understood that shit because like even before, like halftime when he threw that kind of hail married to Bryant.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
I'm like, bro, fake like it's.
Interviewer 1
They got the script out.
Joe Haden
He's scoring.
Interviewer 2
14 seconds.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
They had the 40 yard line, bombed it.
Joe Haden
Martavius across the field hauling ass.
Interviewer 2
I understand.
Interviewer 1
No, he was different.
Joe Haden
Or he had him and they had Mike Wallace before that and that dude was running.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, I played with Mike in, in Miami.
Joe Haden
See?
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
That's my OG Ole Miss. He bombed me up.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
Boom. I got the city, baby.
Interviewer 1
He should have went to lsu.
Joe Haden
That boy for too low.
Interviewer 1
Y lofo too, man. Man, we talked about receivers. Like who some of the DBs now in the game that like you, you like how they play, you know, you, you, you watching them every Sunday. You know what I mean? Like you got your eyes on anybody.
Joe Haden
I don't think they call. Denzel Ward's not young, but I love his game, bro. He's like ignition. Yes, bro. You speak the facts that I love. When you go watch the tape, your coach is like, every snap, it's 70 plays. Denzel Ward, they might throw at him five. But when you go, just watch the tape, people are strapped the whole game. Like he just there locked in. Boom. Feet off the line. There's no false steps. There's no weirdness. He's in phase. Like, technique is unbelievable. Patrick certain just. He's big, tall, fast, and he's like doing it at 6:2 is ridiculous. It's crazy. Stingley is. I love Stingley coming out from lsu. I thought he was. I thought he could have went in the draft as a freshman, then he could have got drafted as a sophomore. I'm like, he the best corner in his freshman year in college.
Interviewer 1
I'm happy. I'm happy his. His career. Like, he started a little slow.
Joe Haden
A little slow.
Interviewer 1
He started a little slow. But I'm happy where he's at now. Where he's at now, like. And he don't get enough praise. I don't think, I don't think he's. He's not as, as I would say Boswell out there. You know what I'm saying? But, like, I think he's one of those guys that could definitely pop his.
Joe Haden
If he. If. If he wanted to. Yeah. Because that man got ball skills.
Interviewer 2
He don't talk a lot.
Joe Haden
Yeah, don't talk a lot. Work. J.C. horn from the Panthers, tall, long. He's starting to, like, I'm starting to see him because he had all the athletic ability, but he's starting to intercept bang eights. When you undercutting the Bang 8, I'm like, you're watching tape.
Interviewer 1
You know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
You know something?
Interviewer 2
He understands it now.
Joe Haden
He understand that. He understands it now.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
You're not only just bringing athleticism. So I want my man, Joey Porter Jr. I think he going to start like out in Pittsburgh. Out in Pittsburgh. He was using athletic ability and things going into your 3, 4. He gonna be able to start watching that tape and not, you know what I'm saying, Just undercutting stuff, making plays.
Interviewer 1
When did you feel like that happened for you? Like that jump from. Okay, you mentioned earlier, not just athletic ability. Right. But understanding, like how I could be more fundamentally sound. Right. Like taking that leap from just using that natural ability to like being a pro. Yeah. Taking the next step.
Joe Haden
I would say, bro, it took for real, probably after like third year. But going into my fourth season, you was ready. I was ready for everything. I knew everything. I wanted anybody man to man, like, it just felt comfortable. Cause I was watching the. That's that pain. You coming in that joint. Nobody get in the bag knowing what's up. But just the whole. All them other games, just natural ability. Taking in coaching, knowing these cover tools is the same cover tools. So when they call this, don't worry about that. Worry about what they about to do. You know what I'm saying? So really starting to study my opponent way more than just what we had going on. So I think year four, when you just start. Shit start slowing down, it sound crazy when everybody say it starts to slow down. It really do.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Because you out there as a rookie and they call a play, you don't know. You gotta know. You don't know all the nuances. You like this, okay, all right. Then people get the motioning. You're like, what's the check? Yeah. Oh, I'm throwed off.
Interviewer 1
Yep.
Joe Haden
Yeah, I'm throwed off.
Interviewer 2
I'm so happy you said it's starting to slow down. Because for me personally, when I played in the sec, it was the same thing as the NFL. When I. My first year in the NFL, I'm like, damn, People talked about the game, of the speed, the speed of the game. But I'm like, nah, this shit, it's the same shit. So I kind of got criticized just, I guess for saying that. Saying that, right. So being honest, I wanna. When you first came to leave, you played db, it was probably different, right? Was the speed of the game the same to you, or it was a little bit faster?
Joe Haden
It wasn't really, like the speed. The speed of the game was similar. Yeah, no, I think. I think it was a Shit just moved a little bit faster. Everybody was moving with a purpose. Niggas knew where they needed to be and why they needed to be there. I didn't. You know what I'm saying? So I think that was the part, especially now, being on defense and just having to learn all the calls, the checks, and wanting to know what's going on.
Interviewer 2
So, I mean, it makes sense because guess what? You still learning the playbook. Shit's still fresh. You're not gonna. Like, when I was out there, like, my first year, I wasn't the third down guy because it's too much shit going on. For me especially that still is defense. You might have an extra guy over here whole time, nickel Sam, coming way off this side, right?
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
So, bro, I'm talking about me personally. I thought blocking was harder than anything. Anything else?
Joe Haden
Yeah, yeah, yeah. No, for sure, for sure. Then they, like, the coaches, they don't understand that, like, all of the plays, everything like first down, second down, third down, running backs, you having to know the passing, the. The D line, rushing, like the offensive lineman passing scheme. So.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, man, you mentioned, you mentioned also, like, you know, you guys talking about learning playbooks, right? Like, during your time in Cleveland, I think you had like nine, seven different coaches.
Joe Haden
I had about. I was there seven years. I had five different head coaches, six different, like, defensive.
Interviewer 1
How are you learning? And we all, we all know, sitting here as pros, right, in order to play fast, right, you got to know what you're doing, right? How hard is it? All right, can you talk about. For people who don't realize that, you know, you. You still played at a high level with five different coaches, however many DCs, right, learning new playbooks every year. Obviously, cover two is whatever it is,
Joe Haden
but languages are different. They're going to say cover two a little different way. They just don't say playing cover two
Interviewer 1
or a different check to cover two, right? Like. Like, can you talk about making that adjustment and still playing at an all pro level, right? A Pro bowl level? Like. Like, what was that like for you?
Joe Haden
That was. It was. It was tough a little bit, but it's like, you're going in there each
Interviewer 1
year, you didn't even think about it.
Joe Haden
Didn't think about it. I'm numb to it. I'm like, you just. You gotta buy in. You got a new coach here, we starting all over. We trying to figure it out, like. And then you gotta buy in completely. Cause I'm like, this who we got. You know what I'm saying? Hopefully it works out. You know what I'm saying? Like, let's get to it. So learning new playbooks and stuff, it wasn't the best thing, but you feel like you new student OTAs, you got to make it to OTAs, you got to make it to all that stuff, because that's when I'm learning the stuff, trying to get the playbook all the way down. So training camp, smooth.
Interviewer 1
So. So speaking of that, you also had, I want to say 15 different quarterbacks during that time.
Interviewer 2
That's crazy.
Interviewer 1
Was that. People don't understand. Right. You know what I mean? Right.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
Was what quarterback? Did you feel like he was like, oh, hell no.
Joe Haden
Like.
Interviewer 2
Like, be real.
Joe Haden
No, no.
Interviewer 1
Like, he was like, is that if there is a quarterback, you don't have to maybe say that you don't want to, but, like, if there ever was a. If there was a quarterback or. Or a situation, you was like, man, we down bad.
Joe Haden
Like, I never wanted to really. Like, you always. When you see them in practice or whatever, you would always have hope, you know what I'm saying? But my whole thing was, I always didn't try to. I'm on defense. I'm trying to do my job. If they don't score, they don't win. Just trying to be a team player when we're retired now, looking back at it, that's just crazy. You need to be scoring points. You're a professional quarterback. We got professional receivers. Everybody here is getting paid. You know what I'm saying? But when you're in the situation, who am I to be worried about them if they don't score? Joe, make sure nobody gets open on you. Trying to make sure. Defense. Best defense in the league. Yeah, it sucks when you lose. Like, dang, we lost seven to six. We just needed one more drum. So in the situation, you always want your, like, offense, please, ball out. I've seen you do it before, like, at practice. He makes good throws. You know what I'm saying? Do the good stuff. You know what I'm saying in the game, so always went there.

Why? What's wrong?
Julian Edelman
Nothing's wrong. You look like a guy running on three hours of sleep and vibes. Okay, yeah, I'm tired, kind of cranky, and very thirsty. Congrats. Those are some of the potential signs of mild dehydration. And I bet your last bathroom break showed you another sign your body might be throwing you a penalty flag.

Joe Haden
Positive and never really thought, like, we're gonna lose, but looking back at it, I'm like, we were fucking hands behind our back going into the game.
Interviewer 1
100%.
Joe Haden
Like, it is what it is.
Interviewer 1
I mean, I know now it's a thing, right? You know, it's a thing that. And again, in hindsight, like you say, right, but, like, I think now is the thing that, like, your. The quarterback position, like, has to be that. You know what I mean? And for defenses, you know, you think about, like, damn, like, we gotta hold these guys to, like, seven points to win. You know what I mean? Which is very hard to do in the NFL, especially with some of the quarterbacks. That wasn't on your team, right?
Joe Haden
No, for sure.
Interviewer 1
And then I think, like, when you look at the game now and how it's more of an offensive, friendly league, whatever it is, you know, as a, As a defense, talking about guys like Miles Garrett, how frustrating you think it is for someone like that to know, no matter you get, he had, like, nine sacks in the game or six
Joe Haden
sacks or whatever it is in the game, he lost.
Interviewer 1
I'm thinking about it, Joe. I ain't gonna lie. If I'm a db, I'm playing on defense, and the quarterback ain't, or the situation not, we're not scoring enough points. Not the quarterback, but we're not scoring enough points. Regardless of how as a defender, bro, I'm frustrated. I'm paying attention.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
I'm not even going do no reps on the side. I'm looking at what kind of plays
Joe Haden
y' all installing this week.
Interviewer 1
I want to know. I damn near gonna play offense. You can't. I don't know, bro. I feel like. I feel like that's how you approached it, but, you know, I feel like, me personally, I would have been like,
Joe Haden
yo, I feel you. I, I, I felt like that, though. Yeah, you Know what I'm saying? We definitely had the feelings, but I just tried to not. Not let it out. You know what I'm saying? Yeah.
Interviewer 1
You team guy.
Joe Haden
I'm a team guy. I'm not trying to mess the locker
Interviewer 2
room playing the game.
Joe Haden
They trying. They look. They trying to find reasons not to pay us. I'm not gonna go walk in there.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, man.
Joe Haden
What you need to do is.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Your quarterback.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. So you was excited to go to the Steelers, is what you say.
Joe Haden
I ain't gonna lie. When I ended up getting. They tried to get me to take a pay cut. I'm like, no, I'm not.
Interviewer 2
You tripping.
Joe Haden
I'm stay exactly where I'm at. So you bugging out. I've been to Cleveland. No, for sure.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Then they said, nah, whatever. Let me go. I got offered by the Dolphins was. Dolphins offered me more and the New Orleans Saints.
Interviewer 1
We'd have been teammates, gang.
Joe Haden
But the only thing I was thinking, bro, I wanted to go play with Coach Tomlin. I wanted to go play with Big Ben. I wanted to go where they were scoring points. I know over there. Them boys over there going to be scoring. I don't got a guard. Ab. I'm with you. You know what I'm saying? Le'Veon. I'm with you. What's up, guys? Pouncey, the homies. Coach Tomlin loved everything they had going on. So I'm like, let me just try to bring my talents over here. Defense, I could just do my. And that's when I met, though. When you go there, you do your 1 11th. Everybody on offense, they're trying to score every drive. When they don't score, they're upset. And there's reasons why they looking at the tape. Da, da, da, da, da.
Interviewer 2
Looking at the tape. You hit, fussing what's going on?
Joe Haden
I'm like this. I love that. Y' all trying to get it in there. We scored 30 points. Y' all pissed. We scored to score 42. I love it. You know what I'm saying? Defense, we might.
Interviewer 1
We.
Joe Haden
We weren't performing. We gave up runs and people missing gaps in assignments. And you look at it and it's. Everybody's bad. It's your D tackle right here. You got to make this. You got to make this. So it's the eye in the sky. Don't lie. And it's like, you don't got to go do nobody else's job. You do your job. Yeah, we're going to be good to go.
Interviewer 2
Yeah, man. I see I seen a passion in your eyes when you brought up Coach Tomlin. Right. How you felt about when he stepped down. He stepped away from, you know, Pittsburgh. And also, do you believe the AFC north is not going to be the. The most physical division anymore?
Joe Haden
I think that's not going to change. I think they. I think they always going to be hitting. I think they really don't like each other. And it's just in. It's just in whoever coach comes there, like they going to try to knock each other out and it just is what it is every time. And AFC north football, it's real. It's just. It's just physical. It's real violent. So I think it's going to stay. But with Coach T, I think he gracefully bowed out. I think that him being in Pittsburgh for so long and just the fan base and just. You want to be. You want to be wanted, you know what I'm saying? Like, you want to be someone where you go to the office and they rooting for you, like not tolerated. So I felt like he felt like, you know what? I can step off. I don't think it was the Rooneys though. Like, if the room. If it was up to Coach T, he stepped off. But the Rooneys, they wouldn't have fired him. They would have let him, you know what I'm saying? Play out his contract, do it again. But great, great coach. Love him. Players coach gave me so much knowledge, just so relatable, you know what I'm saying? Great dude. So wish the best for Coach T. But I think he just was like, man, y' all ain't rocking with me here. They kept booing him like five year time.
Interviewer 2
Yeah, that's crazy.
Joe Haden
You not trying to be like he like this, man, I ain't gotta deal with this right now. You know what I'm saying? I'm chilling. I did. Not one losing season, not one.
Interviewer 2
And that's what I was so confused about.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 2
And also you could tell me like the carousel between going from the Browns to Pittsburgh, coaching wise, what was the big difference?
Joe Haden
We just kept. We couldn't. We didn't have a coach that they would let stay there, you know what I'm saying, for too long. So our coach was there maximum two years long. East west side, there for seven years, had five different coaches. Only two stayed, you know what I'm saying, for over one year. So I think with Coach T, I think he just had him and the gm, it was Kevin Colbert. Yeah. Their relationship with the owner just being on the same Page, who we going to bring in, what players we like, how we feeling? Like, who we going to draft? I think it was, like, that was just smooth. And you knew he wasn't going nowhere. Kevin wasn't going nowhere. They had three coaches in the history of the Steelers, so just the comfortability of him to be able to make those moves and be like, do you
Interviewer 1
feel like that was, like, desperation in Cleveland, like, to win? And that's what led to all of the movement right at the head coaching position.
Joe Haden
But I want to ask you this. I think when they let me go and then they started getting talent, y' all got nice. Like, you. Oh, Baker, y' all made it to the playoffs. Y' all beat us in the playoffs. So, like, it's, like, right there, you're building something. Like, end of the day, Baker gave me $25 million a year just keeping that, just being able to go smooth, go get somebody, something, something. But I'm like, I just. I don't know. I think that it was getting good. And when we say, like, the Browns, like, they beat the Steelers in the playoffs, they won a playoff game before. The Steelers have won a playoff game. So now it's. It's. It went down again, but they started getting good. I'm trying to figure out what happened right there. Like, what do you think when you.
Interviewer 1
You know what I. You know what I feel like. And maybe you could. Maybe you'll see it now, but, like, what I felt like was, like, even when I was in Miami and I played against teams in the AFC north, like, you know, Pittsburgh, like, Baltimore, like, even. Even Cleveland, like, seeing you in Cleveland, I think we saw each other, like, once or twice, but, like. And you was hurt at the time, I believe. But at the same time, he was running from you. Nah, nah.
Joe Haden
He was running from the smoke.
Interviewer 1
But at the same time, I remember going to Cleveland, and then I'm playing against the same guys, and I think the biggest thing and the thing that I was trying to do while I was there was also, like, keep our core guys intact.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Like, I feel like the Steelers do
Joe Haden
a great job of that.
Interviewer 1
I feel like Baltimore did an amazing job of that. I feel like teams like the Patriots, they do, you know, they switch around a little bit more, but as far as their core guys, they keep them together, and I think that that's something that the organization and the team could have done a better job of. Like, imagine, like, being able to, you know, all of us having. All of us and you. You know what I mean? Like, that team, that city, which is a football loving city.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
You know what I mean? That community around that team is crazy. Like they're just waiting for us to win. Yeah. You know, so I think that like for me, even looking at Cleveland now, it's like, it's kind of like how Miami is like you're letting all your good players go.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
You know what I mean? Like, and, and I feel like they don't. Didn't see where you went through. I mean obviously they saw you went through 15 quarterbacks throughout that time. Right. Which has nothing to do with Joe Hayden's performance. Joe Hayden still showing up being a Pro Bowler, you know what I'm saying? Like, like I'm playing against Marlon Humphrey and when I was in Miami, I'm playing against same Marlon Humphrey when I get to Cleveland.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
I'm playing against the same. My guy in the slot number. Oh man, he's a, he's a great, great slot corner for Pittsburgh.
Joe Haden
Mike Hilton.
Interviewer 1
Mike Hilton, yes. Playing against Mike Hilton. Every, every time I see the Steelers, I know, like this was my matchup. You know what I'm saying? Like, and I think that those organizations do a great job of keeping their core players together and that helps you build for the future. Obviously, you know, things happen but, and guys want to move on.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
But a guy like yourself who wasn't
Joe Haden
trying to move on.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Interviewer 1
We gotta figure out how to make this work out.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
My problem with that though, they put, put guys in position to make those choices that, that don't understand football. Right. That for me that never played the game. Right. So everything they're going off about is analytics, you know what I'm saying? And I don't, I'm the type, I don't, I don't respect that. Right. And I think for you to be involved in a situation like that, you should have some skin in the game at least. And I'm not saying everybody's bad at it. Yeah. But they have, have a few that, that haven't played the game that make to me make terrible decisions.
Joe Haden
No, for sure. And I can see what you're saying about both of you, about the locker room, knowing what kind of guys like this is a dude that we need to keep on this team because he's done everything we asked of him. The dudes look up to him. The team sees it. You're gonna see that you get paid, you get, you get rewarded for doing what you need to do and being a good guy. So I was saying the same thing with like T.J. ward was there. Tashawn Gibson, bust the screen. It was me. All. They got rid of all my boys for like a couple M's. I'm like, no, this is. We got a corner. We got two corners and two safeties. Y' all not gonna pay them. TJ went to Denver, ended up balling.
Interviewer 1
Busta went to the Jets, Buster went
Joe Haden
to the jets, and Gip went to Jacksonville. Yeah, ballin', bro. So it's like I feel you keeping that same core knowing like pay the people that you drafted. All of us too. Like percent in house dudes, homegrown, boom. That's going to keep the dudes that's drafted your players. Everybody seeing some good going on.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. And, and I, I think, I think personally that's led to the success of the Steelers, that's led to the, the longevity of the long term success of the, the Baltimore Ravens.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Interviewer 1
And, and why teams that aren't actually, I don't say on those levels.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Interviewer 1
Are. Are not there yet. Obviously we have the Kansas City. Kansas City team now that people trying to follow that staple of just, you know, plug and play year in and year out type of players. Right. But we know that's surrounding around a quarterback.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
You know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
Like, you got Pat and Andy, you're gonna be solid.
Interviewer 1
It's different. You know what I mean? No disrespect to Edaman Amadola guys are great. So sure, one of those guys got more numbers than I do.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Interviewer 1
But at the same time, if you compare it like physical ability or whatever, a skill, whatever it is, you wouldn't select that person. You know what I'm saying? So. So it's like, it's like, it's like that. And so I think that that's the biggest thing that I see with Cleveland and, and honestly, with some teams around the league where it's just like, bro, if you keep your guys together, your leaders, your heartbeats of the team. Yeah. Like I'm, I'm still thinking about like guys on this, on the Steelers team. Like, y' all had a guy that didn't even that badly played, but he was annoying as hell. Number 98, bro.
Joe Haden
Oh, yeah. Vince Williams, man. That's my good man.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, he played. He played. He played a lot, but like. Yeah, but he was there forever, bro. Like, he was there forever.
Joe Haden
Coming down and he coming down. Don't kill, don't care. 100 Vince Williams. Shout out Vince Williams. For sure. Love that dude. Savage, you need them on your team, bro.
Interviewer 1
And I remember guys like that.
Julian Edelman
Right.
Interviewer 1
He plays special teams as well. Like it's like. Well, if I look at the Cleveland team right now or even the Miami team, I don't know no one.
Joe Haden
That's why special teams looking crazy. You gotta have dudes that are nice, that play special team.
Interviewer 2
100 vets that understand that know what's up.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, yeah. It's not. It's the only way to make the team in some cases. In most guys. I played a special team when I came in second round draft pick for more first round.
Joe Haden
I played all the special teams.
Interviewer 1
No way.
Joe Haden
I promise you, they had me on.
Interviewer 2
Maybe.
Joe Haden
You talked to Lenny about this man, Eric Mangini.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Joe Haden
He was from the Bill Belichick area. Yeah. That man wasn't playing with me. He did not rock with me. No, I mean, I didn't feel like
Interviewer 1
it was you R5 busting the wedge.
Interviewer 2
No, no, no.
Joe Haden
Yeah, I was safety. Safety, gunner. Gonna hold up.
Interviewer 2
Yeah, all that.
Interviewer 1
So we got a segment here.
Joe Haden
We.
Interviewer 1
Sponsored by Hard Rock. Bet. We got a segment called Lenny's Locks. And in this segment, we. We. We're going with the AFC title. Who's winning the AFC title this year? Or let's. Let's say this, who's coming out the AFC north this year?
Joe Haden
Yeah. So it's. Damn.
Interviewer 2
Now listen, it's a. Is Coach Mike not there?
Joe Haden
I know because a lot of changes. McCarthy.
Interviewer 1
Three head coaching changes in the AFC North.
Joe Haden
Talk to me first. Hold on. Can I see what y' all at first? Can I see yalls temperature? What y' all thinking?
Interviewer 2
Me personally.
Joe Haden
Your personally. I need to know what Lenny thinking. What's your personally.
Interviewer 2
Zig. Zig kind of got pissed off at me. I say Cleveland.
Joe Haden
Okay. Yes. Are you rocking with Shador? Yes. Okay.
Interviewer 2
I love Shador.
Joe Haden
You're going to start?
Interviewer 2
Yes.
Joe Haden
Okay. All right. All right.
Interviewer 1
I'm going Baltimore.
Joe Haden
Okay. You going Ravens. I'm going Baltimore. Solid choice.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
I'm going Cleveland.
Interviewer 2
Okay. I'm going Cleveland. And second, why though? Why Cleveland though?
Joe Haden
Because you said it. Yeah, because you said it. But.
Interviewer 1
No, no but for real. For real.
Joe Haden
Honestly, if I was. I'm going to go with. I think Cleveland. If we. After the draft, we need to get. We still need receivers. We still need to get another tackle. But I'm not mad at Shador. And our defense is fire. Yeah, our defense is fire. We need to make sure now we score some points. We need to get our running back crazy. Nice. The rookie. Rookie tight end. Unbelievable. Gotta get him healthy and then we get some receivers out there. Yeah, we can score some points. Our defense is always going to be legit. But now it's just them in Pittsburgh, too.
Interviewer 1
Yep.
Joe Haden
Because I like Pittsburgh. We don't have a quarterback right now, but we always. We going to figure something out.
Interviewer 1
100%. But.
Joe Haden
But I like Will Howard. What do y' all know Will Howard? You don't believe in him. Ohio State, we drafted him last year. Gotta give him a chance. He was throwing it to Jeremiah Smith from Ohio State. Gave him a Valentine call. Yes.
Interviewer 2
Yes. Okay.
Joe Haden
Yes. Yeah.
Interviewer 1
I mean, he thrown at Jeremy Smith.
Joe Haden
We gotta go see what's going on because, you know, you guys still got DK Metcalf. We got DK and we got Michael Pitt, Pimmer JR. And we got my man, Mount Washington. Yeah, the six, six, 300 pound tight end.
Interviewer 1
Yep, yep.
Interviewer 2
But can he move, though, bro?
Interviewer 1
He can't move, bro. He jumped. He hurdles somebody.
Joe Haden
Hurtling people.
Interviewer 1
Crazy.
Joe Haden
Crazy. Watch his little highlights.
Interviewer 2
I know. I seen the block. Somebody.
Joe Haden
Yeah, yeah. He's nasty because he's 300. Yeah. 10 pounds. Yeah.
Interviewer 1
I'm tackle. He a guard.
Joe Haden
Six. Six.
Interviewer 1
Playing tight. Yeah, he a guard. Playing tight end.
Joe Haden
Who else? We got Riddle. We got Rico. Rico doll. Rico Dollar. The running back.
Interviewer 2
Running back.
Joe Haden
Yes. From the Panthers.
Interviewer 2
Oh, he with.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Free agent.
Joe Haden
We done went and got some dudes, too.
Interviewer 1
Okay, okay.
Interviewer 2
But now the, the. The main question is, can you guys put it together? That's the, that's the main question with the new coach.
Interviewer 1
I think that's, that's going. That's going to be, you know, which is a proven coach.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Joe Haden
Offensive.
Interviewer 1
I like, I like the transition from Tomlin, like, to. It wasn't a reach. It was somebody that's like proven, vetted.
Joe Haden
Like Tom.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Similar.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. I got good history. He's from Pittsburgh.
Joe Haden
From the Pittsburgh. He loves it.
Interviewer 1
Yep.
Joe Haden
He was crying during his interview.
Interviewer 1
I saw that.
Joe Haden
You know, that's what I want to see.
Interviewer 2
Just picking back over the years, right. Who are some of your favorite teammates you had? Either it could be in Cleveland, you know, or it could be in Pittsburgh.
Joe Haden
I would go Cleveland. My. Some of my favorite teammates. We go. Phil Taylor, he's from Maryland. We from the same area. We played against each other in high school and we ended up being teammates. TJ Ward, my dog, man. We played together, got drafted to the Browns. Super duper.
Interviewer 2
Cool.
Joe Haden
Love that dude. Eric Ebron.
Interviewer 1
Yes, sir.
Interviewer 2
Is that man so funny, bro.
Interviewer 1
We trained together. Coming out. He's an animal, too.
Joe Haden
Animal.
Interviewer 2
Y' all be golfing Together we be golfing all time. That's all.
Joe Haden
That's the. When he. We got the Pittsburgh together, we started golfing every day.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
So. Yeah, me and Ebron. Who else we got? I still rock with Johnny, too, man. Me and Johnny. Keep in touch.
Interviewer 2
Right now.
Interviewer 1
That's awesome. Yeah, he got the pie going and everything.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
First of all, hold on. Cause we not gonna act like he's somebody, bro.
Joe Haden
He is.
Interviewer 2
When. When he first. When you first heard the news he was coming to the Browns. How did you feel about that?
Joe Haden
I was excited. Yeah, I was excited. But we. I want a quarterback. I want us to score some points. I'm on defense, like, anything. Okay. Hopefully it's going. Hopefully it's going to shake love Johnny to death. But you know that quarterback position.
Interviewer 2
Different.
Joe Haden
Different. Yeah. Like, I don't care. Like, you got to study that tape. You gotta know.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Everybody's job. You know what I'm saying? You can't be. Just be a wide receiver. Oh, yeah. Okay. I know this. You know what I'm saying? We're in this play and run the slant.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Joe Haden
You got check. Check linemen looking back at you. You got five dudes looking like they need to know something.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
You got to know that.
Interviewer 2
Did they put enough people around him to help him?
Joe Haden
I think Johnny needed to really help himself a little bit too. You know what I'm saying? You got. You can't want it more. People can't want it for you more than you want it for yourself.
Interviewer 1
Okay.
Joe Haden
So I think. I think he'd be able to say that too. Like, he wasn't as locked in no matter how many he was trying to get him. Right. But Johnny's just like, yeah, grown ass, man.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. It's a maturity. It's a maturity thing. I mean, I could also speak to something like that, being there with jg, right? And like there's like three people that's like, assigned to jg, like, to go wake him up to get him to the facility. Yeah. To watch everything. I watch everything he doing. You know what I mean? Like, which obviously we know he's. He's a generational talent animal. Generational talent, man. Like watching this guy just pull up to the. To the. To the. To the practice field.
Joe Haden
Big swole, bro.
Interviewer 1
Just fast stop. Could catch. It was like. It was unreal to see, you know what I mean? And also see, like, the support like, that you mentioned around them. I think. I think that that's something that, you know, a lot of guys need based on, like, Where a lot of this stuff has been going for some guys.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
You know what I'm saying? But, you know, shout out to Cleveland for that. They did. They did put the pieces around them to try to. Try to make sure it happened and worked out. You know what I'm saying? We mentioned that you guys got Cleveland winning the AFC north, but, like, there's a. There's a rumor that MG might not be there.
Joe Haden
You heard? Yeah, man.
Interviewer 2
So, I mean, I love that for him because he's done everything in his career but win.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
As a player, we. We all want to win.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
That's. That's the. That matters. That's what keep our blood flowing. If you want to win the hall of Fame, regardless. Yeah, yeah. Regardless of whatever goes on. But I would love to see him
Joe Haden
on a winning team a thousand percent.
Interviewer 2
You know, what's your takes on that?
Joe Haden
Like you said, he's a Hall of Famer regardless. Miles, if he could go somewhere else, he's not the reason why we're losing. You know what I'm saying? I think he would want to build something in Cleveland. Like, winning in Cleveland is unbelievable. You get so much love to change the city up and be able to go do it. It would be unbelievable. So I think he likes that. But end of the day, if they can get, it depends on what the Browns gonna be able to get for them, who's going, how much they offering, you know what I'm saying? Like, a couple first rounds, Browns looking at like 23 sacks. We still only have five wins. So. Yeah, you know what I'm saying? I wouldn't be. I wouldn't be mad at the Browns to do it. I would feel good for Miles to stay or if he went. You deserve to go get it, bro, because it's not your bad. Why you not winning games?
Interviewer 1
But, Joe, when should a player make that decision? You know what I'm saying? Because he thought about it, he tried
Joe Haden
to stand on it, and then they dropped the 160 on him bomb. Then it's like, okay, I'm. Go ahead and do what? I got it out for a little
Interviewer 2
bit, but how long can he do that?
Joe Haden
This is what I'm telling you. What do you think I'm saying? Only way is if he says, like. Like he. He says that he wants out. But if they're paying you that 40, you're professional. The league don't last that long. You don't want to be a problem trying to get. They're trying to find reasons not to pay you you are Miles Garrison. You walking around, you're a hired gun. You walk around $40 million. Any team game, like who, who, who hired me? Because you're gonna go play, you're gonna go ball, because that's what we do. You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 2
Regardless.
Joe Haden
So with Miles, I'm like, if you don't have control of your rights, if you like, it's not. I'm trying to get out of here. You told them, they like this. You're not going nowhere. So like, if they trade me, okay. But like, I don't know.

Joe Haden
I know you don't got control but
Interviewer 2
but personally you know, you know if we're going to talk about character, he's
Joe Haden
one of the best human beings yes.
Interviewer 2
In the world. Right. And I believe if they do, you know do right by him. Which I think for a guy like that that stayed what is doing right
Interviewer 1
by him mean though?
Interviewer 2
Let him go train them giving him the outing to flourish in his career. I mean that's something I would do for a guy like that knowing that I'm be real we didn't deserve and he still decided to stay do right by him.
Interviewer 1
Man that's the realest you ever said. See he that's the realest you think that's the realest you ever said today.
Joe Haden
Okay, I feel you, but you just gotta. I'm just thinking about the owners and stuff, bro.
Interviewer 2
That's true.
Joe Haden
Think they gonna do that? Yeah. You know what I'm saying? Like, they don't give. Yeah. They don't be careful. They got us by the.
Interviewer 1
But I think. I think at this point, too, right. In a player's career, and I asked you that and. And you took the words out my mouth.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
At the same time, like, right now is a win. Win for both sides. You know what I mean? Like, right now, it's the best time to do that. Right. It's a win. Win for Cleveland. Cause he's still in his prime. Facts. Somebody. Would somebody die to have. There's a Miami Dolphin team. Well, they ain't got no. They ain't got no budget, but there's a Kansas City team that looking for a dm. You know, there's some teams out there that's willing to. You know what? That's our missing chess piece on this board. Cleveland get their first round picks. Probably three or four of them.
Joe Haden
See, that's what I'm saying. That's all that we're talking about, guys. If we get three first round picks, Miles Garrett's out the door yesterday.
Interviewer 1
Right.
Joe Haden
Love Miles Garrett, too.
Interviewer 2
But also, you gotta think about from the business side, the fans, the jersey sales.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
See, now you gotta think about, like. And I see what you say. They kind of have us by, you know what I'm saying? It makes sense because they're gonna be like, well, damn, we get rid of Miles, we marketing pumped, you know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
So, I mean, it is. It is what it is. It's a part of the game. You know what I mean? Like, we building a new stadium.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Out here in Cleveland. Right. Like that stadium deserves a winning team. Not saying that Miles Garrett should not be on that team like we're saying. But like, I think if. If they look at it, I will be building for the future.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Interviewer 1
Miles Garrett. And let's just say, what if my Garrett, Joe Thomason. And just. You know what? I'm done.
Joe Haden
Done.
Interviewer 1
And now you ain't getting nothing out of this. You know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
Like.
Interviewer 1
Like I'm tired of losing. I'm tired of y' all not gonna let me go. I don't want to, you know, make my reputation seem like it's like, it's weird. You know what I mean? Or I don't like the game because they'll Try to flip the narrative in the media. So I understand that. Right. I just think that what you said personally, it's a win. Win right now. It's the perfect time to either see what. You see how much you can get.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 1
Be willing to put it on the table. Have a. You know, I'll be having dinner with Miles Garrett every day if I'm Jim. Jim and D. Has him just, just to, you know, like. We want to do right by you, Miles. Obviously, we want to win games. Like we've been. We've been trying to. At this since, since before Joe Hayden, you know what I mean? Like, and I think that there's a conversation that as. As a, as an ownership and a player like that should be able to have and mutually agree on a decision. And Miles. Miles may be like, you know, man, I want to stay here regardless. I'm thugging it out. You know what I mean? But I feel like if you look at Joe Thomas, his last season was 1 in 15.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Heartbreak.
Interviewer 1
And then, you know, and then, you know who didn't know what happened. Joe Hayden got out of there. I bet Joe Thomas was like, man,
Joe Haden
it ain't good winning one game.
Interviewer 1
You know what I'm saying? So I think it's a win, win, man, for both sides, bro.
Joe Haden
I feel it. I feel it at. Just whatever. I'm with you. I just want to see what he gonna. What are they gonna get for him? Because I think if they get. If they get a haul for him for show, it makes sense.
Interviewer 1
I think he should hold out.
Joe Haden
They should hold out.
Interviewer 1
For sure.
Joe Haden
He under. He's under his contract right now. Right. But you don't give. Don't give.
Interviewer 1
Just I, I a. I don't know what. I ain't counting his pockets. Right. But you over 100 M's like, you know what I mean? Like, I think, I think it's. I think it's a, you know, you
Joe Haden
just want to hold out. Hold out to.
Interviewer 1
I want to see him out. I want to. I want to see him win.
Joe Haden
No, no, for sure, for sure. Definitely.
Interviewer 1
I want to. I want to see him win. I think he deserved to win, you know? You know, and he, and he's been there since the start of his career. He about to be going into, like, year 10.
Joe Haden
Year 10.
Interviewer 1
Year 10 now. So, yeah, it's. It's. I don't know.
Joe Haden
He got drafted 2017.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
He was number one pick. I was four.
Joe Haden
Okay. T.J. watts. Same class, too.
Interviewer 2
Okay.
Joe Haden
Yep. Okay. Yeah.
Interviewer 1
So I don't know Bro, I know. I know. We was talking. As we were talking about Cleveland, I mentioned something about the Stefanski thing and. And calling plays and stuff like that.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
And I was watching y' all show. I was watching y' all stuff, and now.
Joe Haden
Now that you're.
Interviewer 1
You're right. Now that you're retired, right? You could kind of. I'm not technically retired.
Joe Haden
Yeah, you can still get. You can still get busy.
Interviewer 1
Miami, you're.
Joe Haden
Hit him. You out the street two months.
Interviewer 1
But. But, you know, you could. You could say things, you know, from a different perspective. You know what I mean? Now that you have your show, you know, like, how does that. How does that feel, being able to, like, not have that over your.
Joe Haden
The. The thing is, I just never wanted to be like. I don't want to be. Like, just say stuff for no reason. Not just trying to be controversial. And back in the day, like, when we played, we would just say things and cover stuff up because you don't want to be a problem in the locker room. And it's not like we just gonna come out now and just start bringing out crazy stuff, but when things would happen back in the day, you wouldn't say certain. Like, why you ain't say it back then? Don't be a problem in the locker room, not trying to get paid. Looking at us like, nah, he the problem. Like, why he so worried about himself? You see things that go on in the locker room, and you just keep your mouth shut because you're a professional, and that's what you do. And that was like, good or bad. You know what I'm saying? So when you come out, you say good things about people, like, man, da, da, da, da. Or you come say something like, do you really rock with this person? You give them a genuine answer of how you felt, your relationship you had with the person, because people have different relationship with different people. Whatever you and Kevin Savanski went on, that's legitimately what's going on between y' all and you. You know that. So you can speak on your experience and not feel like, no. Like this. No Juice, whenever I hear you say something like this, he ain't lying. You know what I'm saying? He's saying something because that's what happened. That's how he feels. So you could feel any type of way about what he said, but not lying. You know what I'm saying? So that's just how I like. Like, boom. As long as you're not. Just because you. You, me, I don't have to do That I don't have a reason to lie. Like, I don't want just the people to click on this. Like, I'm just talking because I like sports. I'm rocking with it, and this is speaking my truth, and that's what I'm gonna do. So if you don't like it, you don't have to like it. But I'm not lying. So, like, that's just the way, like, perspectives and how people feel. So when I see you talk. Me talk, you talk. I like watching dude shows. I'm like, he's giving you his genuine answer. You want to ask him a question, you might not like his answer or what are you gonna say? But certain reasons why we weren't doing things back in the day because it played for certain teams, and we just was trying to keep it cool. I'm a play. I'm a player. I'm a player. I'm a good guy. I'm a leader. I'm making sure everybody's good. I'm not talking about the offense being terrible. I'm on the defense. Like, if they don't score, we win. I'm trying to lead by example. Like, that's the way you got to do it.
Interviewer 1
Do you feel like. But I feel like. Personally, I feel like that was, like, a weight on me for some years, right? Because, like, I was carrying things. Obviously, that happened. I'm just in Cleveland, right? That I'm just like, man, damn. Like, not that I need to say it to share it, like, to share, but, like, it was like a weight on me that, like, you know, we didn't keep our team together, right? That we let the door over this, over the situation, right? And I didn't speak up at that point. And then when I had my end of. In the year meeting, they asked me if they. If I thought that they could handle the situation better. And I said, yeah, yeah. And I was gone. You know what I'm saying? So it was just like, you know, I don't know if I. You know what I mean? Like, I kind of like, you know what I'm saying? Like, no, bro.
Joe Haden
Like, it's a business, but it's personal relationships, like DMs, whatever you say, like, they can cut you. Like, you work for someone. You know what I'm saying? We work for some people. So the more you get to saying some shit you can get, you might get.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
100% chopped. And as a. And as a leader at that time, I didn't speak because I felt like, what you just Said, like, you know, like, I'm. I'm carrying the momentum of the team.
Joe Haden
Yes. I'm.
Interviewer 1
I'm supposed to be making sure I'm bridging the offense, the defense, a special team as a leader, people that respect you in the organization. You know what I'm saying? So, like, to be able to speak about something that's at that point with that topic. Very close to the heart.
Interviewer 2
Right.
Joe Haden
Love both.
Interviewer 1
Love both of these guys. Right. You know what I'm saying? Like, very close to the heart. It's like, I don't want to talk. And then y' all take my. Like, I'm talking about this side, talking about that side. Right. Which. Which I love people in Cleveland media, but some people in Cleveland media, they're
Joe Haden
here for the drama.
Interviewer 1
Yeah. They're here for the, you know, turmoil.
Joe Haden
Right.
Interviewer 1
Clickbait stuff.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 1
Right. And then I had my meeting, bro, and I just felt like it was a better way to approach that situation, being on the end of it in the locker room, and we could have that conversation. But, like, when I said, yes, bro, I wish you could have seen the look on. On the faces, bro. Like, I don't know if it was like that when you. When, you know, they actually take a pay cut or you guys get a pit, but, like, it was a look on it, and I was just like, that's my. That's my opinion. Like, you know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
Like.
Interviewer 1
Like, I knew this man just needed a real conversation, like, not to, like, you know, keep on pressing the issue. Like, he needed a honest conversation.
Interviewer 2
And also, I think they trick you sometimes to, you know, ask you those questions to get an answer. Like, I had a coach in Jacksonville, man, if you feel away about anything, you just come. You just come, let me know. We're gonna talk like men. So, you know, we on a plane, we loot. We, like, you go from 10 and 6 to fucking whatever, 5 and whatever, and you know how it feels to win.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Right. And as a man, if you giving me the green light to come talk to you as your player.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
And my frustration is, while we on a plane, everybody laughing like, you know, Kiki Kakan, I feel away, right? And I think it goes back to. You have to know and understand the people you draft. Like, a lot of people don't come from losing colleges. Like, you know what I'm saying? And so when you. And I guess this is my biggest thing is, like, it was so hard for me to get over a loss.
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
Like, we'll be in The Wednesday, I'm still thinking about Sunday. So when I say that and when you do rub people the wrong way, like, I have a strong ass personality. You know what I'm saying? So I'm gonna come at you like a man. I'm like, all right, listen. How can we fix this shit? Hey, look, how can we fix this shit? So to me, now, I'm a threat. And I'm only doing what you. You gave me the green light to do, to ask you, maybe I'm coming off strong because we just lost. And you see people on the plane, you know, they laughing, they playing cards. No, this means something to me because I know how to. I know how this go when we win. Yeah. So it, like, is it to me, I don't know. Is it.
Joe Haden
Can you get. Can you.
Interviewer 2
Can you get tricked into answering certain things or certain questions?
Interviewer 1
Yeah. Like politics.
Joe Haden
Yeah. I think you. You got us kind of. Damn, that. That's a good one. That's a good one. I think you got to try to. Because you can control your narrative, you know what I'm saying? When you're in the league, you know what I'm saying? When you're out of it, I feel like you could just let them know kind of how you feel. But when you in it, you just trying to keep. Like, that's the thing about the combine. You learn how to answer these questions, you could turn that thing to however you want the question to be asked. You ain't gotta really answer what they talking about. You know what I'm saying? So that's what I'd be on.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, no, for sure.
Joe Haden
Swinging them, winging them around. Like, you asked about this. Yeah. So, yeah, we did, actually. Actually, you know what I'm saying, this young West.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Control that.
Interviewer 1
That's the game within the game.
Joe Haden
Set you up.
Interviewer 1
That's a game within the game, man. Well, to wrap us up, man, look, you know, I'm giving you flowers, obviously, bro. Like, you know, when I got to Cleveland, man, the city has so much love for you, bro. And. And. And there's not too many players that you can go into a city, and they as big as the team in those cities, bro. And in Cleveland, bro, like, you as big as the city, bro, as big as the team, bro. And there's so much love there, man. And obviously that's probably one of the reasons why you took your one day and, you know, retired as a Brown. Can you talk about, like, you know, what it meant to. To you, your family, you know, throughout that process to Be able to go back to Cleveland and, you know, and hang them up.
Joe Haden
It was everything, bro. Like, got drafted to Cleveland. 7 pick overall, first round, went there, and we were bad. You know what I'm saying? But my whole thing was, ever since I was young, I just wanted to do my best, try my hardest. And when I got to that city, bro, they just embraced me, open arms, and I would go to. I love basketball. So I was going to every game. They would give me floor seats to every game for free. I'm like, are y' all trippin'? I'm coming to every gym. I was putting a wig on, dressing like Anderson Barejal. Baron Davis came. I put the beard on. I'm on the court every game, softball games. It was just going out, and then I was just doing things like sushi rock, taking people out to eat. I was young, rich, and living my best life. You know what I'm saying? So I just wanted to look out for everybody in Cleveland because they was looking out for me. And then I was balling, so they was loving me. And I'm like, man, I love y'. All. Y' all love me. And we were still losing, but they would still support me. They would still show love, still be like, man, don't worry about it, Joe. You're the best corner in the league. And, like, just show so much support. So I'm like, anything I could do, I will always show them love. And it wasn't really about the organization as much. Like, we switched coaches, we switch owners, the community of Cleveland. I'm walking around the city, and, like, bus drivers, they like, honking on Joe, what's up, man? Like, love you. And it's not, like, on some annoying. It's like, I know who you are, not like, somebody else take a picture of you. And then they're like, who that over there? They're like, oh, that's Joe. Then I don't like the second person. Person. Yeah, I like the first person, the one I'm walking through. And you say, oh, no, that's Joe Hayden. What's up, man? Boom, man. Good to see you. Love you in Cleveland. Yep. Love that. So there's a lot of first fans. They see me, know me by face. Like, man, boom. Give me a time that they seen me when I signed something for them.
Interviewer 1
So, yeah, man, that's awesome.
Joe Haden
It feels so home. Yeah. Cleveland, bro. And.
Interviewer 2
And I know we about to wrap it up, right? And, you know, well, we're kind of in our phase of, like, you know, fatherhood now.
Joe Haden
Can we.
Interviewer 2
Can. We. Can we get some insight on Coach Hayden?
Joe Haden
Coach Hayden? Yeah. Come on, man.
Interviewer 2
Yeah.
Joe Haden
Got two little boys, you know, Joey Jett, 9 and 7. My wife is not into the contact yet. Not mad at her. So I'm doing the flag football thing. My youngest boy plays for the Steelers. My oldest boy, he plays for the Browns.
Interviewer 1
Oh, you got a house divided.
Joe Haden
I got a house divided. They was born. My oldest boy was born in Cleveland and my youngest boy was born in Pittsburgh. So that's why they rocking the.
Interviewer 1
And they playing both sides of the ball.
Joe Haden
My youngest boy is playing running back, receiver, corner safety. My oldest boy is playing receiver and quarterback. Receiver and quarterback. Yeah. He don't really do too much defense. He do linebacker a little bit. But.
Interviewer 1
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Joe Haden
Joey, he don't want. He don't like the.
Interviewer 1
But what type of coach is Joe Hayden? Like Coach Hayden?
Joe Haden
We. I am. This one, I am.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Joe Haden
I need to see. I need to see effort. Yeah. I effort. You better be going your hardest as fast as you can, listening like I need listening, people. I don't need you to just be over there just fluttering your fingers. Nah, we need discipline, attention. You're listening and you're trying your hardest. Give me effort. Ball hit you upside the head. But did you run as fast as you could? Did you try? I need you to try. That's your best, okay. That's all you got. I might need to put you at guard, you know what I'm saying? Receiver might not be your thing, but how fast are you going? Are you trying? So I'm real big on effort. I'm real big on trying your hardest. And just like it's a game, I want everybody to just go out there, do your best sportsmanship and everything, but we gonna try to win.
Interviewer 1
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
You know what I'm saying?
Interviewer 1
Is it after the games, is it like party at Coach Joe house or.
Joe Haden
See, this is my first season coaching. I got already feel they trying to come to the crib already early. I'm like, we might have a mid season party and the after season, but every game, I don't know.
Interviewer 2
So listen, man, you know, I'm bringing
Joe Haden
snacks after the game. We post up, I come play.
Interviewer 1
I. I got two. I got one that I come play for you right now.
Interviewer 2
I'm. I'm a coach myself. I coach my son. Okay.
Joe Haden
How old?
Interviewer 2
We play contact football already. Okay.
Joe Haden
Hey, you ready?
Interviewer 2
You ready?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
He started. He started at 4 years old. Cornerback. Play cornerback, right?
Joe Haden
So
Interviewer 2
it's something about a, you know, a football player, bro. And I personally, like, I wasn't coaching at first, just apparently. Me either.
Joe Haden
Look, me either. So listen, bad coaching, man. You not about to be out here teaching my son the wrong stuff, the wrong shit. Yes. Okay. So I walked in there.
Interviewer 2
I walked in, they gave me the head coaching job, right?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
So I'm showing them, like, what this shit takes to be a. Yeah. Like, if you won't be where I'm at, then I'm about to show you six inches. Boom it. Yeah, we out here. Open, closed.
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
Yes. So. But it also. The parents respected me so much more because. All right, all right, Joe. It's like you playing ball, right? Your dad be like, son, you gonna be nice. But, you know, that's your dad, like, you know what I'm saying?
Joe Haden
Yes, it is.
Interviewer 2
Michael Jordan come tell you, damn, boy, you gonna be nice. It's different. It's different in hindsight. So it's like I'm so happy I got to do that and still doing that with my sons, because I'm showing them, not only firsthand, like, yeah, your dad was. I was that nigga. I was nice.
Joe Haden
I like it.
Interviewer 2
But now I'm getting to show you all the little things my coaches taught me when I was young. So, bro, I'm like, bro. And not to cut you off, bro. We had a party every time we won at my house. Every time. Capri Suns, chips, pizza, pool, party.
Joe Haden
I gotta get right, man.
Interviewer 2
We doing it. Cause guess what? You have to.
Joe Haden
We gonna be hot.
Interviewer 1
You gotta make.
Joe Haden
It's a family.
Interviewer 2
But I'm also showing you that, you know, when you win, we win. We party. You lose, go home, it's over. Take.
Interviewer 1
Hands behind the line, man.
Joe Haden
Any snacks? No. No. Take this Capri Sun.
Interviewer 2
Take the Capri sun. Get your ass in that car. And I'm gonna see you. I'm gonna see you Monday for practice.
Joe Haden
I love it, though.
Interviewer 2
And also the brotherhood. We're gonna. This is my last thing about the brotherhood. You have a younger brother, right? Who life you saved?
Joe Haden
Yes.
Interviewer 2
Coming up. Can you speak on that? Because I'm an older. I'm an older brother. I have a younger brother who I brought. Tell my bro I give him the shirt off my back. Right? And also I made him cry, like, kind of last year. Right. You know, like, sometimes we are the example for our kids, right?
Joe Haden
Yeah.
Interviewer 2
But I told my brother, like. And nothing's wrong with me, but I feel like my brother is. If anybody I would want my sons to. To repeat after is him. Right? Because he wasn't brought up in the fame like I was, you know, he didn't. He didn't get caught up in anything. He was always who he was. Mellow, quiet, was his own man. Right? So for me, the.
Joe Haden
The.
Interviewer 2
The more I want my kids to follow, and nothing's wrong with following me, but it's. Yeah, I just know what comes with this. With this. A lot of trials, you know, and you might not be built for that. You know what I'm saying? But. But my role model for my kids exactly is my son, man. I mean, it's my brother because he means so much to me, you know? And, bro, when I was reading up on you and going over your history of the story with you, how you saved your younger brother, like, it almost brought tears to my eyes. Like, can you talk about that being your brother's. That's real. Being your brother's keeper?
Joe Haden
Yeah, yeah. No, for sure, man. I say I got four younger brothers and my mom and dad, bro. They were always super big on taking care of your brother. Look out for your brothers. Y' all are your brother. You know what I'm saying? You are your brother's keeper. Make sure your brothers are good. And that's something I always did. And, like, they just were. My homies were always together, always doing things, always working out. And I would really just put it to my mom and dad, bro. They always just made sure, family first, family first. Always protect your bros. So when that situation happened, man, we was at a cookout, you know what I'm saying? Ended up leaving the cookout, going upstairs to go get some food, and I just felt. Felt wrong. I'm like, hold up. Like, everybody's up here eating. And I went back downstairs to the pool, walking around, I looked down, little brother in the bottom of the pool. I'm saying, so jumped in there, pushed him out, saved him. And they had the ambulance, helicopter came in, flew him to the hospital, and he's good to go. But just that feeling of like, man, wherever your brother's at. Making sure my dad always in my head, yep, make sure your brother's good. Make sure your brother good. And he's a special needs, too, so he does Special Olympics and stuff, so. That's my man.
Interviewer 1
You didn't. Bastard.
Joe Haden
That's my good man. The Global Ambassador Special Olympics. So always making sure Jake's good. Always making sure family's good, man. Cause, you know, it's always. That's what you got.
Interviewer 1
Yep. I love it, man. Well, man, it's an honor to have you, man. Like, you know on this show. Thank you for taking some time out. I definitely. I gotta go pick up a damn whistle. Now.
Joe Haden
