This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowher on Fox Sports Radio.
Colin Cowherd
It's the Herd. Wherever you may be, however you may be listening. Colin, right? Colin Wrong. One hour from now. Thanks for making us part of your day. J. Mac joining I got tell you I saw a headline in the Athletic this morning. I just smiled and laughed. The headline in the Athletic. Three seasons ago, college basketball had no juice, no household names. And now it's better than ever and we have the nil to thank. Here, here. That's what I've been preaching. College sports, it's different now. I think it's better. You may argue it's not, but what it really is, it's different. And I'm watching this tournament. There's like seven freshmen that are. It's college basketball now is such a global Sport because the nil money you can go buy 20 kids, 30 kids from Europe because our economy is so much bigger than Europe. So this sport, I mean, Rick Pitino told us a month ago there's no valor in complaining. Adapt or die. And there's three big winners in the nil transfer portal era. Number one is the Big Ten. There's a lot of money at the Michigan's and Michigan states, and those are big schools with rich graduates. There are six of the final 16 teams. Six of 16 are Big Ten. They've got three straight football national championships and six quarterbacks next year that may go in the first round. Big Ten is rolling. The second big winner is the older coaches. Rick Barnes, Calvin Sampson, Pitino, you know, Tom Izzo. Why? Because it used to be college basketball. You had to pound the pavement. You're going to six AAU tournaments over the course of a day and a half. You're going to high school now. It's administrative. Now you write a check. So Patino and Izzo, you can be in your late 60s or 70s. Lot of great older coaches and elder statesmen. They're big winners here too. It's why Belichick would never have worked in college football 10 years ago. I'm not sure he's going to, but he has a chance to work now in college sports. And the third winner, the players I never bought into the G League. Name one NBA star that comes from the G League. College basketball's got better facilities, better exposure, you know, better coaching, better travel, better development. I mean, I'm watching Michigan, their, their front line looks like an NBA frontline. So I've been preaching this now for several months and years. Is that when ratings are through the roof? This is the most watched college basketball season in a decade when the ratings are up and the revenue is up. My eyes don't lie. You can't tell me the sport's broken. It is different now. You know, players are less loyal, not less passionate. They still love the Spartans, they still love the Wolverines, they still love Alabama, Tennessee, but they're a little less loyal. And that's not a terrible thing. If coaches can skip town, so can players. Players are going to go where they have the best opportunities. And I, you know, everybody told me about the nil. Well, the rich will get richer. I just watched Iowa. This one shocked me. Beat Florida last yesterday. Iowa was middle of the pack in the Big Ten. They beat the defending champions. And I don't know if you remember, but the Indiana Hoosiers, a basketball school, just won the football national championship. So I want to hear about the rich get richer. Indiana could have never won a national championship in football with the old way paying kids through the churches, paying kids at the car lot, putting money in the glove compartment. Indiana couldn't compete. They can now. They just want a natty. And I'm watching, you know, is Iowa a big money school? I mean, there's some rich farmers, but I'm watching Iowa last night. They're beating Florida. That was, to me, forget high point. High point, High points. Well coached. They got good high points. Good. Iowa beat Florida. Wow. So, you know, you got to be careful with all the social media platforms listening to the very loud fringes, the ratings. Fox's ratings for college basketball are up 38% this year. The quality of play is. This is going to be the best draft, the best NBA draft. I don't even, I don't even remember the one where you have 12 guys at the top that can all play immediately in the NBA. Kid from Arkansas, Darius Acuff.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Wow.
Colin Cowherd
It's like if Russell Westbrook was a great shooter too. You get all this athleticism. He didn't want to play a lick of defense. But I'm telling, the kid is so special offensively. So Rick Patino say, is that guy a great coach? They beat Kansas. His team can't shoot and they beat Kansas. He talked about this a couple of weeks ago about all the changes in college sports.
Show Announcer/Producer
I think I can adjust to just about anything.
Colin Cowherd
Because you have to adjust today. You, you see it all the time. All the sports change. The coaches that don't want to change, get out.
Show Announcer/Producer
And I wasn't ready to get up.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, now let's shift to the NBA. So before I left on vacay, LeBron was a distraction. Luca couldn't stop complaining to the refs and even Laker fans were ripping him. Lakers were a bad defensive team and they couldn't beat any good teams. They just beat up on the Sacramentos. I go on a week vacation, I come back, they're on a nine game heater. Luke is the MVP. LeBron's now playing the best defense in probably half a decade for him and setting screens. And JJ Redick may get votes for coach of the year. Laker fans have called Fox Sports and asked that I go back on vacation. I don't even know what I'm watching. They're on a nine game heat. First of all, LeBron listens to his critics. He always has. And I don't think it's a bad quality. But LeBron is playing screen setting, moving off ball, intensity, leadership. I mean, we, we said LeBron's individually great. I'm not sure he's. He, he, he's The a third wheel on any team. LeBron's been sensational the last nine, 10 games. Yeah, he's kind of. LeBron's moved in to his Harrison Ford role, which he's more supporting actor than leading man, but he's still good on the screen. Number two is Luca has stopped barking as much at officials and now is taunting and mocking fans and opposing players. I like that Luca. The other thing is, JJ Redick deserves a ton of credit. He's an offensive guy. He can be a little snarky at times. I like that. But I'm in the media. I like the funny sound bites. I think JJ's done a very good job. I think his and the NBA is a tightrope. When you deal with stars in the NBA, you got to pander a little. You got to kiss some butt. I mean, Steve Kerr. Steve Kerr is always supporting his players, and Steve Kerr is a very opinionated guy. There is a tight rope. You have to play as an NBA head coach. NFL coaches have all the power. NBA coaches don't. The players do. So JJ's messaging early in his career was a little harsh and a little critical, and it's not his messaging. He has softened it. It's hard to get because the Lakers are not a great defensive team, but they're playing very good defensive basketball. So to get superstars in the NBA, like a LeBron and a Luca, to collaboratively play about as well defensively as they can at this spot in their career is a real effort by JJ Redick. He softened his messaging. He's got everybody buying in. They're all golfing on days off. They're buying in. It's. It's collaboration now. Again, it is a regular season NBA winning streak. You know how the NBA playoffs go. It's the only professional league in America that's officiated differently in the postseason. Okay, the whistles, you don't get them. Austin Reeves won't get to the free throw line. And you play the same team six, seven times. So they hunt you down if you're a weak defender. And the Lakers have several of them, so it is a regular season win streak. But I gotta tell you, J.J. redick, they're taking better shots. LeBron's moving off ball, diving for balls, playing real defense. Deandre Ayton, who's always been a little up and down and inconsistent, mercurial and moody, he's playing. He. He seems to be, you know, there's a connective tissue with deandre Ayton. Portland couldn't do It, Phoenix couldn't do it. And maybe it doesn't last forever, but all in all, I mean, what are they? I mean you look around, you're like, it is, it is more of an offensive league today than seven years ago. Like the NFL, they've moved into offense. The rules favor the offense and right now they're the second, third best offensive team in the league. This nine game winning streak, Luke could be MVP, Redick could be coach of the year. LeBron's plan, I mean for him to play defense like this off ball screening, I mean he's doing it all. And here is, here is a little snark stir. JJ Redick recently, it's not just the
Sports Commentator
fact that he responds to a rough play or trash talking, it's the, that he can, he can channel it and he can channel it while still doing all the other things that needs to be done. He's playing as well as anybody in the NBA right now. And I think that's, you know, it's
Chris Broussard

not being talked about enough, but I'm going to talk about it.
Colin Cowherd
He's talking about Luca there. So listen, if you want me to go back to the Caribbean, I will. I mean, you know, it is March, but college basketball, I sat and watched it all weekend. I thought it was fantastic. Now you like Arizona? I think to win it all, I had Michigan beating Florida. I, I was shocked. And it's not a knock on, I mean Florida's a, was a kind of a flawed team in the back court maybe a little bit, but I tell you, that was a. The Big Ten is on fire. I mean UCLA in the first half, until the very end of the first half, led Yukon. I thought, are they going to get, are they going to get 45% of the sweet 16? But I got to tell you, I just thought, I think the tournament so far has been so much fun.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Yeah, excellent tournament, Colin, though that Lakers ran. I don't know that I'm mentally prepared for a World cup that starts in Los Angeles and the Lakers in the finals in June. I don't know how I'm going to handle this. No kids get out of school. It's going to be chaos out here in Los Angeles. Maybe you'll, maybe you'll come back over here and hang out and keep that nice tan going. I don't think the Chicago sun's going to help you for the next four months.

Here we go. It's a Monday. It's our number two. I guess I shouldn't be shocked. Eight of the last nine NCAA basketball champs have lost in the round of 32 or earlier in the following tournament. The exception is that the UConn team, that great UConn team several years ago. But it caught me off guard. I filled out my bracket. I had a couple of red stripes before I filled it out, so it was a little choppy. Then you go to the Caribbean, you got those crudo, a few red stripes. You know a lot of vitamin D. I told J. Mac I overdosed on vacation. The good news it was vitamin D. But you know, J. Mac, I will tell you, when you go on vacation, it puts things in perspective.
ServiceTitan Advertiser
How's that?
Colin Cowherd
And I've come to the conclusion that I like sports because I'm sitting there and it's 83 degrees and I'm like, give me a red stripe. I got to turn the tournament on Friday. And it's great. I just, it is a lot of fun. All right, we call it Colin, right? Colin.
Sophie Cunningham's Co-host
Wrong.
Commercial Narrator/Advertiser
We do it every Monday.
Show Announcer/Producer
And here we go where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I said the NIL is going to favor the Big Ten, major universities, rich alumni, massive endowments. Six of the 16 teams left in this tournament are Big Ten. They have been 13 and three in the tournament. Iowa, a middle of the pack team, knocked off heavyweight, SEC, heavyweight, FL. So the nil is kind of what we thought it would do to the Big Ten, which has the wealthiest, well heeled boosters out there, and they're spending money on their sports teams.
Show Announcer/Producer
Where Colin was wrong, well, the Lakers
Colin Cowherd
are on a nine game winning streak. LeBron's completely energized on the defensive end. I never thought this team could even be remotely elite defensively. And at least during this winning streak, they're top five, top six. So it's hard to get stars, older stars to play great defense on a nightly basis. But LeBron is going above and beyond what is necessary. Luke is playing like an mvp. And I'll take an L on this one.
Show Announcer/Producer
Where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
I said the NIL would be great for older coaches. Rick Batino still alive. Tom Izzo, Rick Barnes, Kelvin Sampson. Why John Caliper? Why? Because college sports recruiting now is much more administrative and less hustle. Rick Pitino acknowledges he no longer recruits high school kids. He not going to AAU tournaments. He's got no interest. He'll buy the best players. And I think that's great for the players because now you get all the wisdom from the Izzos and the Kelvin Sampsons and the Caliparis. I mean, it's always been a better coached sport than the G League, but now more so than ever, where Colin was wrong, okay, in my blotchy bracket, I had Florida playing Michigan for the national title. And this to me was the biggest upset in the tournament. I, you know, Iowa at one point led early and I'm like, yeah, this ain't gonna last. And Iowa was kind of a middling Big Ten team, but they had just enough size to match up. They got themselves a fiery coach and, and my Finals Gators, Finals Team out

where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
I said about the World Baseball Classic. I said, I know I kissed up to my bosses. I said, I think it's the smartest thing we have bought at Fox Sports. And I said this when I worked at the other place. World Baseball Classic is massively undervalued as a property. I get patriotism, I get passion, I get big stars. Listen, Venezuela winning is awesome. I mean, you could just. They just came through the screen how much they cared. You got total buy in from Aaron Judge and Ohtani and Bryce Harper. This is one of those properties in sports. Maybe it's a little bit like, I don't know, the Little League, World Series or something that we, you know, you don't talk about it a lot as a property. I thought this was absolutely fantastic. You could just see the passion and the intensity coming through the television set
Show Announcer/Producer
where Colin was wrong.
Colin Cowherd
I don't get the Ravens having an 11 and a half over under win total. That's best in the league. They got a new unproven coach. I think he's good. A new oc. They lost the best center in football, maybe Tyler Linderbaum. You got the Max Crosby mess. You got the Lamar Jackson contract. I mean, you know, if Aaron Rodgers sticks around, Pittsburgh's pretty good. Joe Burrow is often the best quarterback Sunday in the league. I mean, you're going to beat the Browns probably twice. But I don't. I think Baltimore to me is an under bet. And that's nothing against Jesse Minter, but I don't know, half these coordinators don't work as head coaches. I'll take an L on that one.
Show Announcer/Producer
Where Colin was right.
Colin Cowherd
Minnesota has not only signed Carson Wentz, but Kyler Murray Chase Daniel, quarterback turn analyst, said the second Kyler signed with Kevin O', Connell. J.J. mcCarthy's done. I always said about J.J. mcCarthy, he's got talent, seems like a good kid. He doesn't have a wow trait. And as much as I love Jim Harbaugh, when I asked him about him, he said, well, he's a winner. Winner's not a trait. Winner's what happens when you play at Ohio State in Alabama and a Jim Harbaugh college team. Winning's not a trait. Personality, arm mobility, toughness, those are traits. So I'll take it. I'll take an R on that one. Colin right. Colin wrong.

that Chris Broussard cover in the NBA since 1995. Oh, I want to ask you before I get to the NBA, I got to ask, I got to ask you about Darren Peterson. I said this, there's like a 10% Ben Simmons vibe. Like, I'm like, does he, does he love it? And also he's got durability issues. And Cooper Flagg said this year he goes, man, the difference between college and the NBA, you play a lot of basketball, the games are longer. There's three times as many. You also have to play defense in the NBA. In college, you can get away with it, you know, not playing great defense. Are there any, do you hear any reservations about Peterson, Kansas going number one because he's a sensational talent. But, you know, durability. He also, Chris, he kind of plays in a silo, no assists. He averaged like less than 2 a game. So, like, he needs the ball when he's on the floor. Doesn't necessarily elevate others. Any negatives you're hearing?
Chris Broussard
Well, most people like him a lot and he's going to obviously go high in the draft. But yeah, some of the things you mentioned, like, personally, I like Debonza out of BYU better. I would take him number one. I think Peterson's obviously got a bright future, but the red flags are glaring. Colin, like just missing so many games for Bizarre or hidden reasons. Right. All of that. And that. I mean, you bring up Ben Simmons. I have not heard that comp.
Colin Cowherd
No, that's my opinion. Just. Just a passion thing.
Chris Broussard
No, it scares you. I mean, because Ben Simmons had all the talent in the world, and, you know, obviously we know how that worked out. I don't. I'd hesitate to put him in that bucket, but there's a lot of red flags there, for sure. Look, I don't hold the game this weekend against him so much. A lot of people are looking at. He was inefficient. Five for 15, I believe. Didn't kind of take over the game.
Colin Cowherd
No, he didn't.
Chris Broussard
You're talking about that passion, that killer instinct. Didn't really show you that. So those are things. But I hesitate to overreact to. To one tournament game.
Colin Cowherd
Right, right.
Chris Broussard
But look, he'll be a top five pick without question, and he should. But there are some other guys that I don't have the same reservations about, so I would. There's a lot of concern there. As great as he is as far as talent.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. And I don't think he's going to be Ben Simmons. I'm saying 10%. There's just something there where I'm a little uneasy with his durability. And I mean, listen, man, in the NBA, you got to play hurt. I mean, it's just. You're just playing so many games. It's so taxing on your body. Okay, let's get to the NBA. I said, I always knew the Lakers were gifted offensively. They're actually playing better defensively. LeBron's a big part of that. But you know what's funny? Rich Paul reached out to me a couple weeks ago. He was mad at me because I was saying, like, I'm not sure with Luca and Austin's inability to really play elite defense. And LeBron at his age can't compensate. I'm not sure he's a good fit. I think LeBron hears everything. I think right now he is just trying to. He's trying to prove all of us TV critics wrong. Do you think this team. Because the playoffs are different, you don't get the whistle, same team, seven nights, they can hunt your bet, your worst offensive players. Does this Laker team, are they built for the playoffs? We know they're built for the regular season. Great. Offensively, that doesn't necessarily translate to postseason wins. Do you think they translate well, first
Chris Broussard
of all, to your point about LeBron not being a fit, he wasn't early you know, earlier in the season he wasn't until he came back a couple of weeks ago and decided now to his credit, he watched, you know, this win streak started with him on the bench injured and he watched them and figured out what is the best way for me to help this team win. And that's by being kind of this high octane role player. Right. He's doing so many things he hasn't done throughout his career. He's sitting in the corner for the corner three, he's running the floor. Incredibly, he's in the dunker spot like he is being a tremendous role player that on nights when Austin Reaves doesn't have it, for instance, he'll go for 30 like the other night. So LeBron has really changed his game to fit with Luka and Austin Reeves. So that's great. As far as the playoffs, I think the Lakers, Colin, are the third best team in the west behind OKC and San Antonio. They're one in five against those two teams this season. But look, first round, if they get hu, Houston will not beat them. I think Houston's done. The Lakers would beat Houston, no question. Minnesota and Denver, if they get one of them, that'll be tough. Denver, I would see that kind of as a seven game series. I could see either team winning that. What would be interesting, Colin, if the Lakers get to the second round and face the Spurs. Now I think the spurs are a better team but they're inexperienced. Everybody has that question. That's the one question about the spurs, especially since they've been shooting a three well the last few months is their inexperience in the playoffs. How is Wimby, Stefan Castle, Dylan Harper, all these guys going to react to the playoffs and then they would be facing the most experienced playoff guy you could face in LeBron. Luka obviously has a lot of experience. Deandre Ayton played in the finals like Marcus Smart has gone deep. So that would be a real test case for the power of experience. So I would, I think right now I'd pick the Spurs. But that would be in the back of my mind like yeah, you know, if the spurs don't react properly to the playoffs, the tough seven game series could the Lakers with their experience, JJ Redick also has more experience than Ms. Johnson, Mitch Johnson who be in his first playoffs. So that, that's what intrigues me about that round. But I think the spurs are better and I likely would pick them up.
Colin Cowherd
You know it's interesting I think sometimes when you make a big deal so Giannis is out there and what's going to happen to the Knick? Knicks got a break. When you know Cade Cunningham is going to be out. That's a break because the Pistons had hammered the Knicks. Yeah. And without Cade, they just can't score the ball. So then Tatum comes back. That's not necessarily good, although they played bad the other night. But the Celtics are back. And so I don't think that. I don't think the Knicks are winning the title. But if they got to the Finals, you can make an argument they don't have to make a Giannis move, but if they got bounced by an Orlando or they got bounced by a Cleveland or a Boston, my argument is this. Brew Brunson is a smaller player who has the ball a lot. He's going to age quickly. And Cat, we all kind of know the game on Cat. Defensive liability. Giannis sounds like it'd be a perfect fit, but now he's having lower body injuries. They're adding up. So I think the Knicks are fascinating. If they get to the Finals, you keep og, you keep Hart, you keep. You run it back. If you don't, I think there's going to be a lot of heat to make a Giannis move. And let me ask you, as somebody who lives in New York, I don't know if I want to give up four firsts for Giannis and OG and a Josh Hart or you're going to have to have a salary. What the Giannis, Knicks thing. How. Where are you on that?
Chris Broussard
Well, one, I think the Knicks would have trouble making a deal that was fair for Milwaukee. Like the Knicks, you know, remember, they gave up so many draft picks for Mikhail Bridges, so they don't have a ton of picks to trade to Milwaukee for Giannis. So I. What the Knicks would have to do to get Giannis is unless the Bucs want to do them a favor, which I wouldn't if I'm the Bucks, they would have to go out and get a third or fourth team, I think, to make this happen. Somewhat similar to a Golden State, which will go after him as well, I think. Colin. Yeah, sure. If I'm the Knicks and I don't get to the Finals, I'm trying my darndest to get Giannis.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
Chris Broussard
I just think it's going to be tough with a third or fourth team having to be involved. Colin. The team, I think made a mistake and I think should go wholeheartedly after Giannis this summer is Houston. Houston should have gone. They should have offered Shingun. And whether It's Reed shepherd or some other young players.
Colin Cowherd
So I agreed with you on this. Yes, I agree with you on this.
Chris Broussard
That's the mistake. So they got to do that this summer because it's good. I love Shingoon, but I don't think he's good enough or will be good enough ever to, like, lead a team to the championship.
Colin Cowherd
Fair.
Chris Broussard
You got Durant, so you win. Now go get Giannis this summer and pair him with Durant, and, I mean, that'd be a great team, try to win a championship. So I think Minnesota also should make a charge, although I don't know that they'd have the pieces.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, see, this is my take on this as well. Like, I know Houston does not want to give up Amen Thompson. Like, I know that he is defense and energy and athleticism.
Chris Broussard
You might be able to keep him. I agree with that. I think they maybe could keep him in that deal, but, you know, we'd have to see.
Colin Cowherd
So I want to talk. Katie. So he just surpassed mj. We put up the board, the graphic earlier, And I said KD reminds me of Wilt in that most great players. LeBron, Steph, Magic Bird, Dr. J, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan. There's almost an obsessiveness about winning. Their moves are always about winning, joining the best. KD left a dynasty to go play with a friend in Brooklyn. And like, Wilt Chamberlain, like, was a man without a country like LeBron. You know, Wilt was just flaky and fun and a big personality. I love Kevin Durant's game. I think he's one of the great. I mean, I. And I mean, I put him in the MJ offensively elite category. I think he's one of the great offensive players in the history of the sport. Catch and shoot, off the dribble. I think he's unbelievable. Do you think history. Because he's bounced around. Will history be kind to Kevin Durant in a league where a lot of players don't want to make news? I mean, he'll come out and just tell you, I don't want to be a leader. I'm a baller. I mean, he doesn't even care, and I like that about him. Will history be kind to Durant?
Chris Broussard
Look, I think Kevin Durant is a top 20 player of all time. A lot of people think that's too low. Like, some people have him knocking on the door of the top 10. I say top 20. And the thing is this, Kyle. Look, when we talk legacies, obviously we include winning so much, but Organization, coaches, teammates, all of that's important. If Kevin Durant had stayed, you mentioned him going to Brooklyn. If he had to each his own. If he was happy with his moves, then thank God for that. It's all. It's about what he want to do. But if he had stayed in Golden State, Colin, he would probably have what, four championships, maybe more, maybe five. And instead of Steph being the guy that's viewed as top 10 now all time, Durant would be that guy. Because people looked at Durant as the best player on that team. He won the two Finals MVPs. But when Steph won it without him, after Durant left, he moved up into that top 10. In most people's eyes, that would have been Durant. So you are right in that his legacy, I think it's obviously going to be great. But it could have been much better had he stayed in Golden State. And I'll say this for his legacy, I think Durant is the evil was the evolution of Dirk Nowitzki. All right? He was a bet. He was like Dirk was that first seven footer that was primarily a perimeter player and wasn't a terrific rebounder, defender, but just a score. That was Durant. Better shooter, better three point shooter, better scorer than Dirk. And guess what? I think Wemby, not that we're gonna see a bunch of Wimbys, but he's like the evolution of Durant. Cause he's, he's 7, 6 doing what Durant can do and then some. So yeah, Dirk, kd, Wimby in my. But that's the evolution.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Great stuff, Brew, as always. First things first after our show. Good seeing you, buddy.
Chris Broussard
All right, Colin, thanks.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I think. I don't know where I'd put Durant and I've never written it down, but I will say that I think in the history of basketball, there's not five guys more offensively gifted. Oh, wow. Look at this. Wow. Wow. Take a break. Back News breaking. It's the Herd.

Oh, this is some breaking news. Chiefs Pro bowl tight end Travis Kelce going to be 37 in October, early in the season. He just signed a three year deal worth 55 million bucks thereabouts. He can make about 58 with some incentives, but I know J. Mac's not going to like that. Listen, the Chiefs are still fifth best odds to win the Super Bowl. Why? Because people are betting the Hunt family, Brett, Veach, Mahomes, Kelsey in a big spot Andy Reid, Steve Spagnola. What you're betting on is their excellent leadership. I mean go look at the Patriots last year. How are they so good? Part of it was Robert Kraft, Josh McDaniels, Mike Vrabel, the former Patriot, good young quarterback. Their roster wasn't one of the two best in football. No way. I mean the old line was a mess. They need another tight end and another receiver. You, this is a leadership league. It really. And so to me, how did the Broncos turn around the organization with that terrible cap hit Sean Payton. Now they have the second or first richest owners in the sport. You know, Cortland Sutton, good leader. Garrett Bowles, the left tackle, good leadership. It's a leadership league. We all think it's a talent league. It's a leadership league. I mean Aaron Rodgers literally got the Steelers to the playoffs. They didn't have a number two receiver. They were an awful offense until he got there. They're the oldest defense, one of them in the league. They overspend on defense. Aaron Rodgers, leadership, eq, iq, whatever you want to call Aaron was just made him a very good red zone team. They were a terrible red zone team the previous five years. So I, I, I look at this and I'm like, if this is what Mahomes, Reed and Brett Veach say, hey, he's still great on third down, then you know, three year deal can end up being two years. I mean it's, I don't guaranteed money. I get it. It's a leadership league and he is going to be. I mean here's the other thing. The wide receivers for the Chiefs, Rasheed Rice, don't trust his maturity. Xavier Worthy's talented but a gadget guy. They don't have a, I mean Nicole Hardman, they don't have a guy I trust. So Kelsey on third down or red zone, I trust him. Mahomes trust him. Andy Reid trust him. So I get you don't like it though.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Well that's a good take that you trust Kelsey. Is it also saying that Veach and Reed don't trust the wide receivers?
Colin Cowherd
I wouldn't trust him either. And it's a bad receiving class.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Now the counter is. I just looked up, you know, the history of tight ends who are 37 years old and according to most of the data, tight ends start to decline around 32. I can't find a wide receiver over 37 who had a 1,000 yard season, 859 yards. Tony Gonzalez seems to be the cap.
Colin Cowherd
I don't think, I don't think Travis Kelsey is about thousand yard seasons. I think he is a third down, red zone, fourth down, situationally excellent player. He and Mahomes can read each other's minds. You're not looking for him to have 94 catches. That's not what this is about.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Where are you getting the punch from? The running game? Kenneth Walker, I mean, overpaying for the run.
Colin Cowherd
I think they believe if they can nail, if they can get that right tackle from Utah with their first pick, they like Simmons at left tackle, Creed Humphreys awesome at center. Trey Smith is outstanding. I think the Chiefs believe. Listen, our offensive line looked bad last year. We actually think if we can solve right tackle, it's really, really good. So I think they're off and I think they kind of feel like, listen, we're going to have a rookie right tackle. We're going to have a second year left tackle. We now have a veteran quarterback, a veteran running back, a veteran center. We're going to be a little older. We're going to be a little older in some spots on offense. But the defense is mostly young. Outside of Chris Jones, it's mostly young. So I don't like the Trent, the Trent McDuffie move bothers me. Kenneth Walker and Travis Kelce, I mean this is a, this is a quarterback league. If, if, if Mahomes is better with a new right tackle, Kenneth Walker and Kelsey, then you do it.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
Yeah. Let me, let me ask you this. So super bowl odds have the Chiefs fifth best in the league. You and I have the Chiefs third best in their division.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
Sports Analyst/Co-host
So there's a big disconnect here. Is this, you know, Vegas saying hey by the Chiefs low. Mahomes is back. They're not going to miss the playoffs again. I think that would be dumb money to invest in the Chiefs to win the Super Bowl.
Colin Cowherd
Well, it was a down year in the AFC. Lamar got hurt. Right there was the McDermott heat, Herbert's, both tackles. The offensive line was egregiously bad. So it was a. Indiana was playing great until Daniel Jones got hurt. It was a weird year in the afc. My take is it's a bounce back year. If Aaron comes back with the Steelers, they're going to be a good football team. Not great, but good. So Travis Kelsey led them in receptions, yards and touchdowns and they missed. He's older, but again, it's not about total catches. That's not what he. That's not what he. That's what The Seahawks need JSN to be because they don't have a dependable two. Yeah. All right, Travis Kelsey scream 7 and 10. Maybe I get invited to the wedding. Whether you want to maximize your performance

Podcast: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Host: Colin Cowherd, with guest contributions from Chris Broussard and show analysts
Main Theme: A deep dive into the transformation of college basketball through NIL and the transfer portal, NBA trends (notably LeBron, Luka, and the Lakers’ hot streak), and NFL news, with additional insights on athlete legacies and leadership dynamics in pro sports.
In this dynamic installment of The Herd, Colin Cowherd explores how NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) and the transfer portal have redefined college basketball, highlighting the increased competitiveness and global reach. The episode then shifts to the NBA, where the Lakers’ surprising defensive resurgence and NBA playoff implications are dissected, along with player legacy debates and NFL news, particularly Travis Kelce’s extension and what it signals for the Chiefs. The tone is classic Cowherd: opinionated, observational, irreverent—and always ready to shift from data to story to big-picture analysis.
NIL’s Impact:
“Three seasons ago, college basketball had no juice, no household names. And now it's better than ever and we have the nil to thank.” (03:59)
Winners in the New System:
Parity and Unpredictability:
Memorable Quote:
“Players are going to go where they have the best opportunities. And I, you know, everybody told me about the nil. Well, the rich will get richer. I just watched Iowa...beat Florida last yesterday. Iowa was middle of the pack in the Big Ten. They beat the defending champions.” (07:40)
Lakers’ Hot Streak:
“Before I left on vacay, LeBron was a distraction...I go on a week vacation, I come back, they’re on a nine game heater. Luka is the MVP. LeBron’s now playing the best defense in probably half a decade for him and setting screens.” (09:32)
LeBron & Luka Dynamics:
NBA Playoff Realities:
In his signature segment, Cowherd reflects on his correct and incorrect takes from the previous week.
Where Colin Was Right:
Where Colin Was Wrong:
With Chris Broussard, Cowherd digs into scouting concerns about top NBA prospects and broader themes of player passion and durability.
Darren Peterson Discussion:
Passion and Translation to NBA:
Lakers’ Playoff Outlook:
Knicks & Giannis Sweepstakes:
Durant’s Legacy:
On NIL & the New College Hoops:
“It is different now. You know, players are less loyal, not less passionate. They still love the Spartans, they still love the Wolverines, they still love Alabama, Tennessee, but they're a little less loyal. And that's not a terrible thing.” – Colin Cowherd [07:00]
On LeBron’s Evolving Role:
“LeBron's moved into his Harrison Ford role, which he's more supporting actor than leading man, but he's still good on the screen.” – Colin Cowherd [10:55]
On Coaching in the NBA:
“The NBA is a tightrope. When you deal with stars in the NBA, you got to pander a little. You got to kiss some butt.” – Colin Cowherd [11:30]
On Kevin Durant’s Legacy:
“If Kevin Durant had stayed in Golden State, Colin, he would probably have what, four championships, maybe more, maybe five...But when Steph won it without him, after Durant left, he moved up into that top 10...That would have been Durant.” – Chris Broussard [40:20]
On Travis Kelce’s Value:
“I don’t think Travis Kelce is about thousand yard seasons. I think he's a third down, red zone, fourth down, situationally excellent player. He and Mahomes can read each other's minds.” – Colin Cowherd [45:43]
This episode showcases Colin Cowherd’s expansive take on the evolving sports landscape: college sports’ rapid changes, evolving NBA dynamics, and the centrality of leadership in the NFL. With wit, skepticism, and analytical rigor, Cowherd welcomes debate and offers rich context, making this a can’t-miss listen for any sports fan looking for sharp opinions and a sense of the bigger picture in American sports.
