Thanks for listening to the Best of the Herd podcast. Be sure to catch us live every weekday on Fox Sports radio at noon to 3 Eastern, 9am to noon Pacific. Find your local station for the herd@foxsportsradio.com or stream us live every day on the iHeartRadio app by searching Fox Sports Radio or FSR. This is the Best of the Herd with Colin Cowher on Fox Sports Radio. All right, here we go. We have breaking news. It is a Friday in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening. J. Mac the Silver and Black got a little more silver. Pete Carroll is the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks. Ageism had a rough day today and and by the way that division now is incredible. Harbaugh, Peyton, Annie Reed, and Pete Carroll. Yeah, they're calling it the AARP division because every coach is old as hell. I like it. Gonna be strong, by the way. Liam Cohen in Jacksonville, Pete Carroll. They're gonna gobble up assistants and coordinators. I'll get to the Cowboys in a second. Every day you wait to hire a coach, you're losing out on the best assistants. So just think about that. There's a finite number of elite NFL assistants. Make decisions, make them quickly. And the Raiders have chosen Pete Carroll. He's an adult, and the organization needs one. I like the choice. I said this. I had no problem if he went to Chicago. I thought he was a good fit there. I think he would have been a good fit in Dallas. I think he's an excellent fit with the Raiders. They need stability, they need culture, and Pete provides that. And in a division where you have to face Andy Reid twice, Jim Harbaugh twice, Sean Payton twice, pretty good bet that a coordinator who's never been a head coach just won't do. And Pete's history is he is good with young quarterbacks. He was good with young Russell Wilson. He was good with younger Drew Bledsoe. He was tremendous with a young Mark Sanchez or a young Carson Palmer. So this is a coach. The Raiders are a total rebuild. They don't have a staff. They don't have a front office. They don't have a quarterback. They have Max Crosby and a couple of weapons. So this. This is laying concrete. Forget about the master bathroom and a great kitchen. This is laying concrete. This is foundation up. I think Pete Carroll has proven. I've talked to players throughout the years and coaches that know Pete, one of the most organized coaches in the league. When the Patriots faced the Seahawks in that super bowl, it was a chess match. And Belichick later said that he likes facing older, experienced coaches. It was a chess match. Belichick won that chess match when it went down to actually that interception in the final couple plays. And I think Pete is. I mean, here's the thing with Pete. There are things like retaining kind of average coaches too long that I'd criticize him for, or maybe not. In Seattle, sensing the urgency at quarterback, when you're in A division with McVay and Kyle Shanahan and, you know, we can nitpick all these coaches, but, you know, this is somebody that took a Seattle franchise that was just swimming in mediocrity, took a USC program swimming in mediocrity, even a job that didn't work for him. New England, it's not like they fell off a cliff. I mean, they replaced Bill Parcells. They got, you know, one win last, one win last, one win less. So I like Pete for the job. I don't think, I don't think age is a factor with him. I think he's the best available coach on the market. This is an organization that needed a grown up, needs stability and needs culture. And as we look for our TV audience, these jobs are getting Phil Bears, Ben Johnson, he's working on filling a staff. The Jaguars, Liam Cohen, the Jets, Aaron Glenn, Mike Vrabel, Pete Carroll. Only the Cowboys and the Saints don't have a coach. And that's why I want to segue to what's happening in Dallas. This is amazing. Apparently Jerry Jones, the Brian Schottenheimer move, according to a report this morning. Yeah, that's a. That wasn't Jerry's idea. That was floated by his sons. His sons really like the idea. And Jerry's not down with it. He's more down with Deion Sanders. That's probably not going to happen too. There are some things in your life you can take time with, like let's say buying solar panels for your house. You went 31 years without it. You can put it off until next week. Or maybe marriage. If you're a young lad, you're 31, 32. It's a big decision. A lot of fish in the sea. Take your time on that one. And then there are a couple of other things you have to act urgently. Like let's say you cut off your arm with a table saw. You might want to get to the ER quickly or hiring a head coach. Remember, in every industry in America there is a finite number of elite. And it's. I don't care if it's realtors, politicians or football coaches. It is about 10% right now we got about six great coaches and six great quarterbacks and six great coordinators and six great owners. Even the billionaires, about five or six in the league that are really truly non meddling and elite. So here are the Cowboys, Pete Carroll working on a staff. Vrabel's got his filled out. Aaron Glenn, Liam Cohen, these guys are filling out their staffs. So Dallas is now going to get the third and fourth choice on O line coaches and there are not many O line coaches in the league that you even know the name to because at one point Jimmy Johnson told me, at any one time, the NFL's got four great offensive line coaches. There's a reason. You know the names of the best offensive line coaches in college, because there's so few of them. And they're all getting. They're either now all employed or going to get employed by Aaron Glenn, Pete Carroll, Liam Cohen in the next week. So this needs urgency. And the Cowboys have only interviewed three people in person. And remember, Robert Kraft, owner of the Patriots, has six rings recently. How did they fire Gerard Mayo? The season was over, and before Mayo got to the locker room, ban a press release. We're moving on. By the next day, they'd contacted Mike Vrabel. They put their name in the running for Mike Vrabel. Think of the Cowboys. I looked this up this morning. So January 5th, the Cowboys played their last game on January 5th. The next day was my birthday. Should be a national holiday. But January 5th, they played their last game. It took them eight days to figure out McCarthy's not staying. It has been 11 days since then. And they're like, hey, what do you guys think of Pete Carroll? I just got hired in Las Vegas. All right, let's. Let's cross him off the list. Oh, boy. In my entire life, every year there are seven or eight coaches that get fired, and there's always one great candidate. Last year it was Harbaugh. This year it was Vrabel. And then there's always, like, two or three really good candidates. Pete Carroll, Ben Johnson, and those guys like Ben Johnson. There's always one or two hotshot coordinators. One will flourish, one won't work. So one of the things about, like, Mike McCarthy and if I'm the Saints now, I go hire Mike McCarthy because, you know, he'll be somewhat successful. And Mike Vrabel may not win a trophy, but he'll be somewhat successful. And, you know, Pete Carroll will be somewhat successful with a hotshot whiz. Kids, the coordinators. And Ben Johnson's a very good coach in Chicago. Would you be shocked in five years if we're moving on to another Johnson? I mean, that's just the way it works in Chicago. But Jerry Jones is going to do what he did with Dak Prescott. He's gonna make you think he's playing poker. He's not showing his hand, and then you end up paying about 40% more than you should. And, I mean, this morning, you know who should be excited this morning? Robert Sala. Robert Sala is just sitting back there. All the good candidates are getting hired. Robert Sala has unbelievable leverage this morning. Unbelievable leverage. You gave Dak unbelievable leverage. I mean, solid sitting there like now Sal is the number one candidate with Mike McCarthy, so. Oh, oh. Just. Just an added note. The Eagles this weekend will play in their eighth conference championship in 25 years. Cowboys have been in none. By the way, this is Michael Irvin yesterday on Speak for Yourself reacting to Brian Schottenheimer potentially being the Cowboys coach.
Carson Palmer
Is he the right coach for the Cowboys?
Colin Cowherd
No, no, not, not at all. Honestly. Honestly, right now this is the Cowboys.
Carson Palmer
You need the right coach on the.
Colin Cowherd
Football field to bring the best out the team. But I do believe at the point in the juncture that the Cowboys are now, you also need the right coach.
Carson Palmer
To put to raise the morale.
Colin Cowherd
I'm a, you know, tried and true Cowboy fan. My morale is down. I know their morale is down. So, you know, hopefully they're making the decisions, understanding all sides of it. Yeah, we need the right coach. We need the right coach for everybody on the football field and off the football field. Now just think about this. Let's say you give it to Brian Schottenheimer. That's a lower end coach who will now have a lower end staff because Pete Carroll is going to gobble up a lot of the remaining solid coaches. I mean, if I was Pete Carroll this morning, I'm hiring Robert Sala in five minutes to run my defense. If the NERS don't hire him first. My first call Pete Carroll, get Robert Salah off the market, get him to Vegas. Now Salah may have options like the Cowboy job, but now the Cowboys are going to get a second tier head coach and a third tier staff. Brian Schottenheimer is considered a weak hire, meaning if he would have been hired a month ago, you would have struggled to build a great staff. Coaches know who can coach like Pete Carroll should be able to build pretty good staff. Vegas, easy place to get people when you get Ben Johnson in Chicago is considered a hot coach. Caleb William, they'll build a nice staff in Chicago. Mike Vrabel, New England. Vrabel's good. He'll build a better than average staff. Gerard Mayo did not build a great staff in New England because in the coaching community people were like, I don't know if it's going to work. Year later didn't. So now the Cowboys are going to have a second tier coach, maybe a third tier. And the staff could be a mess because Liancomb who got the Jags job again, considered very young and very sharp. He's going to. My guess is he and Pete Cohen's going to gobble up the best offensive staff over the next 36 hours. And Aaron Glenn and Pete Carroll are going to gobble up all the great defensive guys they know in the league. And what does that leave the Cowboys? That's crazy. What's going on in Dallas or what's not going on? January 5th, season ended eight days later. McCarthy left 11 days since then, three live interviews. And, and the story was they, they were interested in Pete. Well, he just signed in Vegas. Oh, wow. So J. Mac Blazing three. I got a couple of picks and, and, and, and an over under bet in one hour from now. Jordan Schultz gonna be joining me in 25 minutes on some of this coaching stuff is a lot, a lot of movement. I, I think Pete Carroll's a good spot. Yeah. Who's his quarterback again? They're going to draft one. The good news is they have a top. What are they picking? Six, seven? Something like that? Yeah. They're going to miss out on the two stars, Cam Ward and, and Shador. Let me float this to you. What if this is from a friend? I got to give him credit. You know how Mayo was kind of a stop gap and then they got Vrabel. Yeah.
Carson Palmer
In New England.
Colin Cowherd
What if Schottenheimer is a stopgap for someone else in a year that they just can't get? Now, Dion Belichick. Do you think Schottenheimer would be hired as a stopgap? There's no question. Unless they get solid. Who I think is pretty good candidate, let's say it's Schottenheimer. That's a four or five win team. So you get a great draft pick in a strong quarterback class, you just kind of punt on the season. I know that no organization thinks like that, but hey, we just need to get a guy in the building, stabilize things. We realize the market's going to be better next year for a coach. We bungled it this year. I'm sure Jerry would admit that. Right? Yeah. Well, I think Dallas has always been. They've been in quicksand for the last several years, so they're just slightly above average. So you get, you know, you don't get a great draft pick, you don't get a terrible one, but you know, you're kind of making the playoffs or you're down around 18, 20, you know, and it's like, it's hard, especially in a weak draft this year. Dallas, Dallas needs to make some moves. I'll say it again, I'd consider moving Micah Parsons getting the second number one, building that roster up, because I don't think you're going to get a great coach. I mean, overpaid quarterback, even if you restructure his deal. And a subpar coach and a weak staff in a division would now emerging superstar Jaden Daniels and the stacked Eagles. And the Giants are not going to stay down long. There's a potential for them to come out. I know you're not interested in the Giants, but they're not going to stay down forever. Right? Right. Cowboys might be last place in that division. That's if I pick today. That's where I pick them. I'd pick them last. Oh, so this weekend you have Commanders and Eagles. Get to that in about 15 minutes. Also you have Bill's Chiefs and J. Mack has been saying this. This is kind of a running theme on this show since week six is that Kansas City's getting favorable calls from the officials, never using the word rigged but tiptoeing around it So I thought I'd add some context today. If you look at the Chiefs playoff penalties in 2021. Yes, it is very, very clear. The Chiefs have had only 319 penalty yards. Opponents 541 in playoff penalties in the last four years. That is something. I wanted to throw this out. The second New England Patriots dynasty with another great coach. Interesting. The New England Patriots ranked third fewest penalties per game and third fewest penalty yards in that span including the plethora. Like the Chiefs, it's almost. If the best coach team in the league had fewer penalties. I'd like to add this if I may. Did you know the fewest penalties by any team this year? The best young coach, Sean McVay and the Rams. So Andy Reid, Belichick and Sean McVay loony coincidence. Arguably the three best coaches have the fewest penalties. Penalties are negative plays. Good coaches avoid them just like good quarterbacks. Mahomes, Josh Allen don't throw as many picks. Justin Herbert had a bad playoff game but threw almost none during the regular season. And great coaches also separate themselves in many forms, schemes, game plans, situational excellence, developing young players, avoiding penalties and mistakes. By the way, the most penalized team this year, the jets, the least penalized team this year, the Rams one handed interim coach one had the best young coach. So in fact since Sean McVeigh has joined the NFL as a head coach, the Rams are the least penalized team. That's because it's a big market. Yeah, okay, whatever. I give up. So I, I know you conspiracy theorists are are tiptoeing around rigged. The Chiefs are really good and really well coached. And oh, by the way, there were two teams in the league this year that had just one delay of game penalty. Andy Reed's team and Sean McVeigh's team. Both the Giants and the jets had 10 plus. So again, Julian Edelman also brought up this point. It's Patrick Mahomes. He's the face of the league. They do want to protect faces of the league. Maybe it's subconscious. Here's Edelman this week. I remember being on the other side seeing a late hit on Brady or a roughing the passer on Brady where I'm like probably wasn't there. But it's Tom Brady that he was already at five Super Bowls. You guys got to understand the situation years ago when Michael Jordan was in his prime and dominating the league. Michael, absolutely. And I can say this about Magic Johnson overwhelmingly got the favorable whistle. They were intimidating, they were assets. It didn't come from the league office. It was kind of like knowing the temperature of the room and when, when it's a go either way, play on Mahomes on a helmet hit and you don't get to review it or challenge it. And the league has told you on quarterback hits upstairs, when in doubt, call it. That's not my opinion. That's as we showed you Monday. That's in the rule book. When in doubt, quarterback hits roughing the passer. Call it. Tie in. Baseball goes to the runner in football goes to the penalty flag. On quarterback rubbing the passer, be sure to catch. Hey, everyone, it's Katie Couric. Well, the election is in the home stretch, and I'm exhausted. But turns out the end is near. Right in time for a new season of my podcast. Next Question. This podcast is for people like me who need a little perspective and insight. I'm bringing in some foks friends of Katie's to help me out, like Ezra Klein, Van Jones, Jen Psaki, Asted Herndon. But we're also going to have some fun, even though these days fun and politics seems like an oxymoron. But we'll do that thanks to some of my friends like Samantha bee, Roy Wood Jr. And Charlemagne the God. We're gonna take some viewer questions as well. I mean, isn't that what democracy is all about? Power to the podcast for the people. So whether you're obsessed with the news or just trying to figure out what's going on, this season of Next Question is for you. Check out our new season of Next Question with me, Katie Couric, on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. What's going on, everybody? This is Justin Pennik from John Boy Media, the host of the Football Today podcast alongside Bobby Skinner and Chris Rose. We're rolling three times a week, on Mondays, on Wednesdays, on Fridays. Breaking down everything you need to know about the NFL. We're talking about the MVP race. Is Josh Allen going to put pull it out? Lamar Jackson? Can Saquon Barkley even break the rushing record? Can the Steelers keep up their momentum. We talk about everything. We break it down. Stats, analytics and of course, Chris Rose is bringing his perspective on being a pro in the media world as well. Listen to football Today on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcasts and you will be glad you did. Hope you could join us for the postseason run. And here we go. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up. Fire it up. It's Collins Blaze in five. Sponsored by DraftKings Commanders and Eagles. I like Philadelphia minus six and the over 47 and a half. The Eagles have won 14 of 15 games and they're virtually unbeatable when A.J. brown's in the lineup. They averaged an NFL best 193 rushing yards over the second best team in the league. Right? That was number one in the league over the last 15 games. Okay, they have no giveaways in four straight games. So their rush offense the last 15 games, yards per game, percentage attempts a game. This is what they do. It's not a quarterback led team. It is a run game led team. The Commanders third straight road playoff game. They allowed in the win 12 big plays versus Detroit. No rookies ever been to a Super bowl and their rush defense leaves a lot to be desired. 30th. Okay, so you're talking about a team that is road weary, that is outclassed physically. Their weakness is the Philadelphia strength. Is Jaden Daniels capable of performing maggot magic, a backdoor cover? Absolutely. But last week I wouldn't touch Detroit. Philadelphia, I said stay away. Don't bet it. It worries me because of Detroit's defense. Philadelphia's defense. Boy, they hit on draft picks in that it's excellent. The Washington Commanders are missing their best lineman, an interior lineman against Jalen Carter. Potential nightmare Rams who had a rookie center struggled with this at the end of that game. I like Philadelphia to win 34 to 24. I think it could get a little ugly. I'll take the over as well. Comfortably. Bills at Chiefs the wise guys like Kansas City, but I've been on the Bills for a month to win the Super Bowl Bowl. The winner of this game in my opinion hoist the Lombardi Trophy. They have a winning record against the Chiefs and Sean McDermott has been there. Did you know that in nine meetings they've won five? They lead the NFL in turnover differential. This team is different like Kansas City. They don't beat themselves. Fewest giveaways, eight in a single season in league history. 12 games this year without a Turnover. Their defense also may not be elite. Right. You don't think it's elite, but they led the NFL with 35 takeaways because you're usually trailing and have to play catch up and are kind of predictable. Josh Allen in his playoff career, do not confuse him with Lamar Jackson. He has been excellent again. Nine games against Mahomes total. He's won five. And Kansas City, I think the gig is up. Even if you go to that Houston game, they only had 212 yards offense. They only averaged 4 yards of play. Very Travis Kelce dependent. I like the Bills receiving core better. I like their running back room better. I like their offensive line better. I think quarterback is a wash. Kansas City's got the better defense. Josh Allen has a way of making great defenses, reducing them to so. So I'm going to take the Bills to win a close game outright. You know, it's going to be close. Drama filled. 28, 27. I believe whoever wins this game wins the Super Bowl. DraftKings sportsbook this week, new customers bet 5 bucks to get 200 in bonus bets instant. The promo code is heard at signup one more herd. Fifteen years in the NFL, multiple time Pro bowler, Heisman winner, college hall of famer, and now and now high school football coach about to become high school football coaching legend. His son's the quarterback and he is joining us now live right now. Carson Palmer in his office right now, around the clock. So you were at usc and then all of a sudden your first coach, Paul Hackett, doesn't work. Here comes Pete Carroll. So you're a young guy. That Raider roster's got a lot of young guys. What was your first impression of Pete Carroll? You had a great year. I mean, you, you, Pete kind of took you to new heights. But give me your first impressions of Pete and what really resonated with you?
Carson Palmer
Just the energy he brought to the program. You know, there was. There was such a vision that was laid out in front of us from the jump and it. There was a clear vision. He knew what he wanted, he knew what he expected. We knew as players what to expect from him and what he expected from us, which is just at the end of the day, what you want. You know, when, when you're the Raiders, you just want some stability. It has been a very unstable environment for a very long time and he instantly gives you that stability that that pro, that that organization needs.
Colin Cowherd
When you're coaching in high school and you've had good coaches, you've. You. There's been a lot of guy, Bruce Arians, Pete Carroll. What is the one thing you will take from Pete as a coach? The one discipline, the one culture setter that you'll take from Pete?
Carson Palmer
There's not, there's not one thing. I had a chance to spend five or six hours meeting with Pete before I took this, this coaching job at Santa Margarita High School. And I took 12 things. I still am texting him, asking him certain things, how to run this, how to do this. So he's not a one thing guy. He doesn't do one thing well. He brings tremendous energy. He's super mature. He's got success, so he's got credibility. But, you know, the things that I look and that I'm hanging my hat on are, you know, there were simple rules, but Pete isn't, you know, a ton of rules, you know, super disciplinarian. You know, there's a handful of rules. They all make a lot of sense. They're really easy to follow. And if you can't follow those rules, then you probably shouldn't be on his team or really any team. But there's not one thing that when I think back about my experience playing with him and, you know, I learned, I learned how to be a leader. I learned how important it is to focus on the ball and how important it is to go get the ball on defense. He always talked about that, securing it, never giving it away and attacking it on defense. He talked about respect, respect for your team, respect for the officials, respect for your opponent. He was, he's. He's the greatest coach that I ever had the chance to play for. He's a future hall of Famer. He's everything you want in a coach and the Raiders organization. This is an exciting day, obviously for the future. You know, I know it's a three year deal, maybe a four year deal, but he's just, he gives you instant credibility, stability, maturity. And he's been there and done that. And what he did in Seattle was amazing. Going from, you know, the Matt Hasselbeck, Sean Alexander, creating the Legion of Boom, developing the Legion, Legion of Boom. Being there long enough to see those guys leave and move on, and then still getting the playoffs, you know, with. With Russell Wilson at quarterback and beast mode in the backfield and really reinventing that team after the Legion of Boom, you know, to bringing along Geno Smith. I mean, I, I don't think he gets the credit he deserves for the success and the stability that he brought to Seattle.

You played in a conference championship game, NFC championship game. Go back to that moment. Jaden Daniels, Jalen hurts now. Been in a couple mahomes, been in a lot. Josh Allen's experience. Jaden Daniels, this is his first. That was your first. You tell me anxious. Did you worry about like being so amped up that can affect sort of, you know, your mechanics? Go back to your NFC championship game. What was it like?
Carson Palmer
Yeah, Jaden's got nothing to lose. I mean, he's playing with house money. All the pressure's on Philly. He's, you know, he's got all the hype. You know, everybody's going to be focused on him. Obviously, that entire defense, that entire stadium, the energy is going to be electric. But man, he's out there playing as a rookie, thinking, I've got a whole career ahead of me to get back here. I'm just going to let it loose, cut it loose. And, and that's the one thing when you watch him play, he doesn't really, he doesn't play within a mold. He plays outside the system a lot, which is really unique. And a lot of guys don't have success doing that. He is just playing with so much natural instinct and his first. One of his best attributes and one of the things he's looking to do first is take off and run with the ball. He's such a good running runner with the ball. And it's not because he's a 44 guy. It's because he has the ability to get down and cut and change direction and make people miss. So I think in his mind right now, he cannot wait for this game. He knows all the pressures on Philly. They're at home, they've been there. They're expected to continue to play through this game and into the Super Bowl. And he's playing with, you know, a young team, a first year head coach in his first year as a quarterback. I think he is excited. I think he's going to let it loose and have an amazing game and possibly knock off Philly and head to the super bowl as a rookie and be the first to ever do it.

You had a year in Arizona, it's still the best year quarterbacks ever had there. You threw for 4,600 yards, 35 touchdowns. In the history of the Chicago Bears, they've never had a quarterback equal the one year, your greatest year. It's the greatest year Arizona has ever had for a Quarterback in a season. You also, I think you were the first quarterback to throw for 4,000 yards for three different teams. So you had success in multiple places. All that said, Chicago has struggled with quarterback. They've never had a 4,000 yard quarterback. They've never had 30 touchdown passes. You did all sorts of teams. So obviously that's a lot of you because you did it with different people. Maybe some of it is the weather, maybe some of it is. It's always had a defensive culture, but there is something to unlock here. You know Caleb Williams pretty well as a former USC guy. How does Ben Johnson. This is a defensive culture. It really is. You think Bears, you think defense. If you were taking over Caleb Williams in Chicago, cold weather, rough outdoor games. Are there any secrets to getting over the hump for a historic franchise that can't get over the hump at that position?
Carson Palmer
Yeah, I mean, a historic franchise that hasn't had success at that position, but they've never had the athlete or the player and the competitor that Caleb is at that position. So it's the first time that that organization has had somebody like him. You combine him with. With what? With what? You know, you watch Jared Goff do who. Jared Goff is an incredible player, but not the athlete that Caleb is. So I just, when I first heard that Coach Johnson was getting the job. Caleb's got the blueprint. He can sit there and watch hours and hours and hours of film of watching Caleb or I'm sorry, watching Jared Goff run that system. And then you combine the addition of all the attributes that Caleb has that Jared doesn't have within his, his repertoire. I think the sky's the limit. I think Ben is phenomenal. What he's done some of the, he's coming up with concepts that, that people have not seen or run in the NFL. Yeah, there's some things he's doing in, in against man defense, in the play action game. They're, they're route combinations that I just haven't seen before, which is really rare. A lot of stuff in the NFL gets recycled and then it trickles down through college football. But, but Ben is an innovator. He's coming up with new stuff. And like I said, I mean, Chicago's got a quarterback and an athlete back there that they've never seen run out on that field in their uniform and their helmet. So I think it's a perfect combination. And I think the blueprint is right there for Caleb. It's so nice when you get a new head coach that comes in and you can watch that system on film and study that playbook and study the cutups that he's going to be studying of Detroit and Jared Goff doing it. And I just think that's going to energize Caleb. Caleb's going to go, man.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Carson Palmer. So you've been coaching now a month? He's coaching his son at a very storied high school program in Southern California. Harder than you thought. Easier. Can you give us an, can you give us an update on your coaching? Oh, we lost him. We lost Carson Palmer. Well, I appreciate it. We'll break down in connectivity. It's the world we live in. Good stuff. Carson Palmer, 15 years, three time Pro Bowler. He didn't play his first year. Jon Kitten, I think was ahead of him for a while, but I think what Jaden Daniel's doing is all time stuff. Colin Cowherd kicks off the episode with the latest NFL developments, focusing on Pete Carroll's recent appointment as the head coach of the Seattle Seahawks. This segment sets the stage for deeper discussions on coaching trends and team strategies within the league.
Cowherd announces Pete Carroll's move from the Seahawks to the Las Vegas Raiders, highlighting the implications for both teams.
"Pete Carroll is the new coach of the Seattle Seahawks." [01:51]
Discussing the trend of older coaches dominating the league, Colin humorously refers to the division as the "AARP Division."
"Harbaugh, Peyton, Annie Reed, and Pete Carroll. Yeah, they're calling it the AARP division because every coach is old as hell." [02:30]
The conversation shifts to the Dallas Cowboys' ongoing search for a new head coach, critiquing the involvement of Jerry Jones and his sons in the decision-making process.
"Apparently Jerry Jones, the Brian Schottenheimer move, according to a report this morning... Jerry's not down with it. He's more down with Deion Sanders." [05:00]
Cowherd emphasizes the importance of timely hiring to secure elite assistants, warning that delays can lead to subpar coaching hires.
"Every day you wait to hire a coach, you're losing out on the best assistants. So just think about that." [03:15]
Analyzing the Raiders' situation, Colin asserts that Pete Carroll brings much-needed stability and culture to a team lacking structure.
"They need stability, they need culture, and Pete provides that." [04:00]
Cowherd addresses allegations of favorable officiating towards the Kansas City Chiefs, comparing their penalty yards to other top teams.
"The Chiefs have had only 319 penalty yards. Opponents 541 in playoff penalties in the last four years." [20:05]
Highlighting the correlation between coaching excellence and low penalty rates, Colin points out that top coaches like Andy Reid, Bill Belichick, and Sean McVay have teams with the fewest penalties.
"These are great coaches who avoid penalties just like good quarterbacks avoid interceptions." [21:30]
Former NFL quarterback Carson Palmer shares his experiences working under Pete Carroll, praising his energy, vision, and leadership.
"He instantly gives you that stability that that pro, that that organization needs." [34:06]
Palmer discusses the multifaceted coaching philosophy of Carroll, emphasizing leadership, respect, and a focus on fundamental play.

Reflecting on his transition to coaching, Palmer credits Carroll with instilling valuable leadership and strategic principles.
"There's not one thing that when I think back about my experience playing with him... He's the greatest coach that I ever had the chance to play for." [35:20]
Cowherd analyzes the upcoming playoff game, favoring the Philadelphia Eagles due to their robust rushing game and defensive strengths.
"I like Philadelphia to win 34 to 24. I think it could get a little ugly. I'll take the over as well." [28:15]
Predicting a thrilling matchup, Colin sides with the Buffalo Bills over the Kansas City Chiefs, citing Josh Allen's performance and the Bills' defensive prowess.
"I'm going to take the Bills to win a close game outright. You know, it's going to be close. Drama filled. 28, 27." [29:45]
