Lavar Arrington
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. I would like to say this and we are efforting catching up with lavar Arrington who by the way is in Arizona where his Penn State Nittany Lions took care of business last night and took care of business against Boise State and the game kind of played out pretty much how you expected the game to play out, that Boise State was going to battle because they play hard. If Ashton Gente didn't have a big time monster performance, then Boise State was going to be up against it. But ultimately Penn State was the better team. They were favored by 1112 points. Whatever, it closed at going into the game for a reason and Penn State got it done. And so what we've gotten thus far through the first five games of the College Football Playoff, this new expanded 12 team college football playoff, what we' gotten is basically chalk. You've gotten all the results that you expected and you've gotten, for the most part, pretty uncompetitive games. And so the feeling would be, all right, well then what was the point of this? I mean, I thought this was supposed to add some intrigue. I thought this was supposed to add some, some, a new layer to college football. I thought the, the College Football Playoff was supposed to give us a different viewpoint and a different look and, and a different vibe when it comes to the entire thing. So what was the point? And my pushback on that would be, what's the complaint? Like, there is no guarantees that when you go into this thing that you're gonna get good games. There's no guarantees. And I got news for you. There's no guarantees you're gonna get good games. Whenever you turn on football or basketball or baseball, like, there's no guarantees. You ever gone to a movie, walked in, been like, man, really excited about this thing. Half hour in, you're like, this sucked out loud. It happens. Now you could be one of those people who walks up to the person who ripped your ticket, who probably doesn't want to be there anyways and be like, hey, movie didn't live up to my expectations. Can I get my 1325 back? And by the way, the popcorn was a little dry. You could take that approach. You could be one of those nerds who, after Manny Pacquiao fought Floyd Mayweather and people shelled out a hundred dollars to watch the fight, who went and complained afterwards and said, I paid a hundred dollars for this and it didn't live up to my expectations, okay? And then they found out Manny Pacquiao had like a torn rotator cuff and they thought, you know what, he should have disclosed that before the fight because otherwise I would have felt a lot differently about shelling out my hundred dollars. Dude, what are you about? If the guy didn't fight, you would have complained. Then if you would have pulled out last minute and, and canceled. But this is the problem when it comes to college football. No matter what, you're going to have a complaint because I got news for you. It could have been a 12 team playoff. It could have been a 16 team playoff. You could have thrown in 20 teams. Christ, you could have done a 64 team field like college basketball and somebody somewhere would have found a way to complain. Because that's what it is. That's what college football has bred. Complaints. Like every single story that comes out of college football, somebody's on the opposite side pounding the table against it. Cam Ward decides, hey, you know what? I wanna go chase a record, and then I wanna sit out the second half. How dare he. Wait, wait, what? It was a pop tarts bowl. Like, you literally had an unhealthy toasted strudel jump out of a giant fake toaster at the end of the game and people were. Because some guy didn't participate in all of it. What, what are we talking about here? Did you see the Cheez it bowl yesterday? You had people get married at the Cheez it bowl. It's the Cheez It Bowl. Like there was a guy sitting in a jacuzzi filled with crackers talking about the snack. Not trying to win an Antonio Brown award. But if he wants to hand out any more of those, I'll gladly accept. But the point is, no matter what, there's gonna be a complaint and there's gonna be a problem. And I looked at last night var and I thought to myself, you know what? Hey, Penn State took care of business. Boise State played hard, but I would not rather go back to a four team college football playoff because at least you gave the underdog a chance in that spot.
Jonas Knox
I mean, they weren't the underdog. They were ranked higher, they came in seated higher. They, they had a bye week because of what they accomplished during the season. I think that there's going to always be debates of why people like something and why they don't. Otherwise there wouldn't be any topics like nobody's ever going to get a perfect scenario for a playo off. And you're not always like, to me, I've been really thinking about this, right? It's like they're saying their commitment is to get the best teams into, into the playoff. And, and so there's all these different variables, your strength of schedule and stuff like that. There's all these different variables. But at the end of the day, Jonas, you set up the schedule, you know what the schedule is coming in, right? So if a team wins out with their schedule, knowing when they come into the season that it's not a schedule that's strong enough to outweigh the other schedules that are, are out there, then you, you, I, I would say you judge it based off of that if you want to try and do it based off of strength of schedule. But at the end of the day, I think to me if you win your conference and if, if you're a team that, that has shown with their record, if, like, say it's an independent like Notre Dame, if you've shown with your record that you should be in the playoff, then be in the playoff. And, and let's line them up. Let's, let's do the playoff. And who wins, wins. Who loses, loses. I just think that it gets crazy to me because here's the narrative. Here's the narrative. Oh, these aren't the best teams. The best teams aren't in there. Alabama should have been in there. Alabama just lost yesterday. Alabama loss. Like, oh, this team, this team should have been in there. Miami should have been in there. Miami lost. Okay. Oh, you had opt outs. Maybe the opt outs play, maybe Cam Ward plays. I don't care. They lost. They lost. So there is no justification for saying some of these teams that didn't play in the playoff should have been in the playoff because some of those teams have lost their bowl games that they're playing in. So to me, if a team gets granted and earns the opportunity to be in the playoff and the bracket is made, shut the F up and enjoy the bracket, enjoy the games. Like, what else is there to it? I, I don't understand why there's such outrage. If Boise beats, if Boise beats Penn State, are people complaining? If Indiana beats Notre Dame, are, are people complaining? If the lower seat teams that get in beat the higher C teams, are people still complaining? They'll probably find something different, a different narrative to complain about, but they're still going to be complaining. You're not going to make all of the pundits happy. You're not going to make all of the fans happy. You're not going to make everybody happy with what it is that, that the college playoff represents. So keep the number the same. I love the fact that there's a bracket in a tournament that, that has this many teams. I like the fact that you have matchups and, and the matchups have been made by the schedule makers, by the bracket makers, the tournament makers. Just, just accept it for what it is and enjoy it. My God, what is all of the outrage for all of the time. It's weird.
Lavar Arrington
And, and for the people that are like, well, it's not the best teams. All right, well, you know how you determine the best teams? You play games during the, this is, you know, this is going to be a weird concept, but if you win a lot of those and don't lose a lot of those, you are determined to be the best team in college football. And there were teams that lost less than Miami and Alabama. Thus they got in and Miami and Alabama didn't. That's the way this works. I understand strength of schedule, teams.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. The best teams don't always perform well enough to make it in. Like, that's just the bottom line. They might have been a better team, but something happened that said, okay, they're not the best team or they didn't play the best game. Like that could have been Notre Dame with that, that Northern Illinois loss. Right. Illinois, like that could have been a, A, you know, that could have been something that kept them out. You know, you just never know.
Lavar Arrington
It's just there's so. People are so conditioned to complain and bitch about college football and everything. Yeah. And they can't, they can't just let it be. Listen, there's no guarantees that you're going to get a good game every single time. And so. So Penn State did what they've supposed to, what they were supposed to do in the first two games.
Jonas Knox
And they were in a game.
Lavar Arrington
Yes, they were.
Jonas Knox
And that was a game last night. People weren't. People were nervous in that stadium. It was a game.
Lavar Arrington
The game didn't look like the SMU game where SMU completely melted. I mean, they couldn't handle the conditions, they couldn't handle the stage. They look like they were rattled from the get go, like there were opportunities, like it wasn't a clean game for Penn State. They turned the ball over. Like the ball over.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
So I came away from that going Penn State did what they should have done. And I thought Boise State represented themselves well, but it played out how you would have expected it if they were. If they could stop Ashton Genti, which for the most part, then they were going to have success. Like, I look at it and I.
Jonas Knox
Think, what's the beef? What's the beef?
Lavar Arrington
And I think that also there's a lot of people that hold on to the narratives that you have about certain programs or coaches going into things and you know, the narrative about James Franklin. Oh, he doesn't win big games. He doesn't win big games. Look at his record against this team, this team and this team and blah, blah, blah. So the hope. Yeah, so it's two teams. So the hope is we got beef.
Jonas Knox
With James Franklin over two teams. It's two teams.
Lavar Arrington
So the hope is we need James Franklin to lose so we can hold on to the take that we had three weeks ago when they lost, you know, Ohio State or they lost To Oregon. It's like, I just, I look at it and I think to myself, we're better off this way. And I'm one of those people that I didn't agree with expanding past four teams. I thought, no, four is fine. If you're going to do anything, go to six, give a buy to the first two, and then you have your semi final. And then I start to look at it and go, first of all, I'm arguing upstream because it's more money and the, and the money dictates everything, so it's going to happen regardless. And secondly, it's the first year. We don't know, look, we don't know how these games, Arizona State could upset Texas. We don't know is, is that is all of a sudden the College Football Playoff going to be worthwhile because Arizona State upstates to upsets Texas. Like, there's no guarantees you're going to get good matchups. Do you remember watching super bowls in the 80s? There was like a stretch to where every super bowl was a blowout for like nine, 10 years in a row. I didn't see people complaining like, oh, they've got to redo this whole super bowl thing. No, you just understood, hey, best team from this conference, best team from that conference, they get together, hopefully we get a good game. But there's no guarantees.
Jonas Knox
That's the point. Jonas, sports are sports. Like, if you're not a decision maker for, for the playoff, watch the games and enjoy the games. Like, why does there have to be all these conspiracy theories? And like I said, for sports talk radios, for sports talk television, podcasting and all, I get it. But the more people try to sound smart about it, the dumber they sound. Like, let it play out. It's a game. You play the game. And if you've earned the right by what took place during the season, if you're in there and I don't care about you arguing, well, maybe you didn't earn the right. Yeah, you did, because you're in, you got in. So if you got in, you got in. Play the games. Play the games. The brackets are the brackets. Play the games. Like, if it's what you expected, good, bet money. If you're so brilliant, bet money and become a billionaire, bet all your money. Go bet your house, your home, your kids, your wife, your husband, whoever, Go bet it all. If you got it so figured out, go bet it all. If these teams aren't supposed to be here that you're saying and this, that, bet it all, Go ahead, give it all up. Let's see how confident you are.
Lavar Arrington
Let me tell you. So look, I, I've been the, I've been pounding the table for. We've got to start building this stuff around gambling because it's, it makes things interesting when they probably shouldn't be. And I'll say this, when Boise State was driving down the field and it looked like they were going to score that garbage time touchdown, that would have impacted a significant amount of bets. Who had Penn State -11. They're holding onto that 17 point lead and people are sweating their balls off thinking to themselves, oh, God, I'm going to lose here on a garbage time touchdown. But Penn State picked it off of the end zone and they. And it saved the day. Find some, Find something compelling about it. If you get a plain piece of chicken at a restaurant, ask for some hot sauce. Gambling is the hot sauce of sports and people need to start embracing it. For Christ's sake.
Jonas Knox
I love that. That's a T shirt.
Lavar Arrington
Damn right.
Jonas Knox
If you don't like a regular wing, get some dipping sauce.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. Because if you don't. If you don't put buffalo sauce on a wing. What is it?
Jonas Knox
It's a damn drumstick.
Lavar Arrington
Make it a buffalo wing. Unbelievable.
Jonas Knox
Oh, man.
Lavar Arrington
That is a shirt, by the way. Wow. We'll. We'll save, we'll get details from you throughout the course of the show on what, what Arizona looked like out there.
Jonas Knox
Arizona was, bro. It was New Year's Eve. It's New Year's Day.
Lavar Arrington
Lock.
Jonas Knox
All I could tell you is if you've ever been to Scottsdale, Arizona. Sheesh. On a regular day, on a regular weekend, you know, they call it Sunday fun day around here. You know, because Sunday is like the day that's like they're deemed Friday or Saturday for most places. Right. If you've ever been here for that, you know what, what the environment is in Scottsdale. I've never been here for, I've never been here for, for New Year's. I've never been here for New Year and I ain't never coming back. And I don't know why I'm doing this show today.
Lavar Arrington
Can't do it. But there's a, there's a reason why a lot of retired baseball players retire in Arizona because they go out there for spring training during the course of their career and they go, you know what?
Jonas Knox
It's the taxes. They come out here. It's purely because of the taxes.
Lavar Arrington
That's right. It's that blonde tax.
Jonas Knox
Oh.
Lavar Arrington
It'S that silicone tax.
Jonas Knox
Damn, man. Damn. They called up, they called a mountain out here. Camel back mountain. And they got it right. They got it right. God dang it. They got it right.
Lavar Arrington

The other running back in the news is Saquon Barkley. And Saquon Barkley has got an opportunity. He's 101 yards shy of breaking the all time single season rushing record. And so the big discussion is, well, Philly's got nothing to play for. They're taking on his former team, the awful Giants, this week. And if Phillies got nothing to play for, why would you risk throwing Saquon Barkley out there to get injured? You'd rather have him for the postseason even though he's got an opportunity to chase history? Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, spoke about his decision and thought process going into the decision yesterday.
Nick Sirianni
I'll talk to our staff, I'll talk to the players, I'll talk to Howie, you know, I'll talk to Mr. Laurie, I'll talk to everybody and to try to make sure I'm making the best decision for the football team. And that's your job as a head coach. You know, I'm gonna always do what's best for the team and the individuals going for, going for that. And I'm still thinking through a little bit of this too, but something I haven't told the guys yet. So I'll always let them know before I let anybody else take into a lot to account. Again, it's, it's what's the best thing for the team and then also what's the best for the individuals that are going for the record. You know, if you think back a couple years ago to 20, 21, Smitty was going for the rookie receiving record. I think he was going to break DeSean Jackson's rookie receiving record and everybody else was. But we wanted, or everyone else, whatever it was, we didn't, we didn't play some other guys in that game. We went and got him that record. Every situation is a little different. Not saying one way or the other how that's going to play out or even that I've made a decision yet. But again, I got to tell the guys first when I. When I do come to that decision, and I'll let you guys know, but a lot goes into it.
Lavar Arrington
All right? So, Lamar, you have a gift. All right? Now you just hear. You're able to hear what a coach is saying, but really translate what he's saying or get a feeling for what way they're siding with as far as a decision goes and then making a decision. So you hear Nick Sirianni on WIP in Philly yesterday talk like that. How do you think this thing goes?
Jonas Knox
Well, I think there's two ways I interpreted it. Two ways, Jonas. I think the first one that I took from it is because you don't. What do you need to talk to all those people about? Like, if the. If the man wants to go out there and play and you know what he's going out there to play for, what's all the. Goes into it and all this and that and the other. So there. There's that. So I kind of took it as he's talking to all of them because he's going to play them and he don't want to lose his ass if, you know, if Saquon something were to happen to Saquon in that game or two, you know, or option number two, the way I took it was I'm not playing them and I don't care if, you know, or I shouldn't say I don't care. I want to be clear that we're on the same page that, I mean, how important is this record? Because here's the thing, we're looking at this as an individual record, but you got to keep in mind that goes down in the record book for the Eagles too, you know, and that adds to the history for the Eagles. The Eagles will now be able to boast having the single season leader in rushing yards. Right. So there is more to it than just the individual. Yeah, so. So I think that those are the two ways of looking at it is I don't want to get in trouble if I put him in there and he gets hurt. Like, it's like, sign me off, sign off on that.
Lavar Arrington
So going into hearing those comments and following those comments, my thought was I leaned towards he was going to play, but I looked at it and said I wouldn't do it. But it felt like that's maybe where he was leaning. Nick Sirianni just spoke with reporters in Philly a couple of Moments ago. And they have made the decision to rest Saquon, Barkley and other starters. And this is my thought on it.
Jonas Knox
That is crazy. Well, I think that's crazy.
Lavar Arrington
I think the only way. So the quote from Nick Sirianni is this. It's a very special record that's been standing for a very long time by a great player. But you try to do what's best for the team. When the buy was, how guys are feeling. When the buy was gone, how guys are feeling. Our goals are to have success and play good the next game we play. So that's the quote from Dixie.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, that's a, that's a bunch of crap like that to me. I don't buy that at all. That like that man ran for the amount of yards that he's ran for and to be in position to take down one of the greatest running backs of all time, who did one of the greatest feats of all time and putting that record in place where it has not been, it has not been broken. It has not been broken. And this man is a hundred yards away from doing it. And it's to rest him for the playoffs. Yeah, I, I, I don't, I, I mean, you play the game. You play the game.
Lavar Arrington
You know what I think so aren't they going.
Jonas Knox
Let me ask you this, let me ask you this. This is last game of the year.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Does, does Philly get a bye week? No, they got to play right away.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
And that's, they're not going to be at one seed.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. And that's, and that's why I going into it, I thought, look, if they would have had a bye week, I could understand them playing him because, hey, listen, we're getting next week to rest anyways. Let's do it. But my thought, if I was, you know, before hearing Nick Sirianni's comments from yesterday, I started to lean towards man, I think they're going to end up playing him. When you hear his comments today after they make the official announcement that they're not going to play Saquon, Barkley and chase the record and they're going to rest starters. I got a feeling they wouldn't have done this unless Saquon wasn't.
Jonas Knox
Okay. Yeah, I'm with you on that. I can buy that.
Lavar Arrington
Because there was a point. So he was miked up.
Jonas Knox
But why put him. But he said the record didn't matter to him.
Lavar Arrington
Listen, earlier this year, there was a point where he was on the sideline and there was an opportunity for him to break a record of some sorts, to go back into the game. And they asked, hey, what do you want to do? It's up to you. It's your call. And Saquon Barkley, because he's such a great guy and you know, this obviously, him being Penn alum, he made the call that, listen, let other guys get some burn time. I don't need to go back in. So I don't think that they make this call unless he gives them the, his blessing in the. Okay.
Jonas Knox
I just don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like for him to have to be put in a position where that's just like him being a good guy can ultimately, sometimes that can work against you. And that might sound selfish and that might sound like, you know, you know, I, I don't know what it sounds like, but I don't like it. You're that close to it. You're a professional. It's the game, it's the season. And you work towards things like, you, you work towards greatness, you work towards immortality because you know the moment you're not playing that game anymore, you start to see and feel your, Your mortality. You're not an immortal anymore. And now you, you start down a different road in your life when you have the opportunity and the ability to be able to do things like break records of the greatest of the greats. So you're telling me they would, look, they would rest LeBron James. If LeBron James had the opportunity to break a record from Michael Jordan or, or any of the other greats. You know, when he broke Kareem Abdul Jabbar's record and stuff like that. You're going to arrest him like that? To me, that's a overstated. That, That's a overstated cop out, if you ask me. Like resting. You're in season. Aren't you preparing for a season? When you're preparing for the season, you're not preparing for every game that you're going to play and possibly play in the playoffs. All right? He's not. I mean, he's not crazy old. I know he's had injuries and, And I'm sure you take that into consideration. It just, it's. It. He'll. He probably will never come this close to that record again. He'll probably never come that close to this record again. And it's, oh, he's a nice guy, so go ahead and rest him because he's not going to care. Or that, that Record. Well, maybe it'll matter to his kids, maybe it'll matter to his grandkids. You know how much that record matters to Eric Dickerson. He don't want nobody to break that record. Just ask and he'll let you know. That is a, that is a serious feat. And people say, oh, well, it's, he played more games. Well, you know the record that, that he broke. O.J. simpson played less games too. So I don't care about the whole idea that, well, Saquon is doing it in, in more games than what Eric Dickerson did. I don't care.
Lavar Arrington
You didn't like when I, that was my excuse a couple.
Jonas Knox
I don't lie. It doesn't matter. I don't care. He broke somebody's record that didn't play as many games as Eric Dickerson did. But you know what? Eric Dickerson went and broke that record. I can't remember a whole lot of things about Eric Dickerson's career by detail. Right? When you think about people that have played the game, you can't remember a lot of things that they've done by detail. You know what? You can remember records. You can remember records. There's certain things you can remember, man, but you don't remember everything. You get an opportunity to etch your name in the record books as such, the highest level of competition and you're, you're saying, oh, well, we're going to arrest them for the playoffs. I, I don't, I don't buy that. That's not a decision I would have made if I'm like, let's get this man that record. Like when I'm the coach, let's get him, let's get him that record. And if I'm the O line, I'm sitting there and I'm, I got snot bubbles and I got saliva coming. My mouth all kind, let's get it, I'm foaming at the mouth. Let's get him that record. Because you know what? That's the offensive lines record just as much as it is Saquon's record.
Lavar Arrington
That, here's what's, here's what's weird about just. And this is why I think that Saquon was obviously heavily involved in this and he was a decision maker. If Jeffrey Lori and Howie Roseman and all these guys in Philadelphia, the front office said, no, no, we don't want him playing. And yet all these teammates being like, Saquon, it's not worth it. And then they go to Saquon Barkley afterwards, hey, Your thoughts? We don't think it's a good idea. No. I want to play. Like, Nick Sirianni is not going to go against everybody in the organization and let Saquon play. And he's not going to divide and create this divide when there's already been stories about a divide that's there between Sirianni and other coaches and Sirianni and Hertz and A.J. brown. Like, to me, this is pretty cut and dry. They went to Saquon Barkley and said, what do you think? If he would have put up any fight whatsoever, I don't think they would have gone against him. I just. I feel like he was heavily involved in the call. I don't think he's earned it.
Jonas Knox
I don't think you do it. I think you say, we're going to get it. Like, if I'm Nick Sirianni, we're going to get this record. You're playing against your former team. They discarded you, threw you in the trash of sorts. You're not worth it. And they did that. S on Hard Knocks. Everybody in the world saw it. You get to go break that record you get to go break that record against the former team that didn't want you in the same conference, same. Same division. I don't like it. I say, let's go get it. Let's go get it. And then you take that type of momentum you got. You got an early gift in your season, you're going for the super bowl, but you got an early gift in your season. You're not getting the number one seed, so if you're not getting the number one seed, get this momentum. Let's. Let's carry that momentum into the. Into the playoffs. Our offensive line are some dogs, so let's go out here and be dogs again and carry this into the playoffs. And, oh, by the way, we're going to make history. Every last one of us, we're going to make history. You know what? I didn't get 200 sacks in my. In my career. But you know who did? Bruce Smith. You know who was right there in the picture? Go look at the picture. Go look at the picture. I'm gonna be right there in the picture. I'm gonna be right there. That wasn't just Bruce Smith's record. That was not just Bruce Smith's. That was not just his record. I was right there with him.
Lavar Arrington
He ran in. You're like, guys, we did it.
Jonas Knox
We did it. Now you got that, man. I was all. I was grabbing him and hugging him. I Knew that camera was out and I knew I was a part. I might have only been a part of. Hey, hey, Jonas. I might only been a part of 20 of them. 200. But you know what? I was a last 20. I was a part of the last 20, baby. And I'mma have my moment. Damn, we broke that record. I tell Bruce that every time I see Bruce. Like, hey, man, we give each other a big hug and we broke that record, didn't we, Bruce? Pray, pray, pray for what?
Lavar Arrington
Oh, I used to tell some of.
Jonas Knox
This madness going on around when.
Lavar Arrington
When Brady and I were Sunday night show together. So I said, brady, between you and I, we threw 95 touchdowns in college. You know, like, I used to claim that all the time. Like, I'm a part. That's part of this.
Jonas Knox
Well, you do radio with them.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. It counts as mine.
Jonas Knox
I mean, I get it. There you go.
Lavar Arrington
Like, you guys are first round draft picks. Me too. No, you're not. My ass. Check the show.
Jonas Knox
You're part of this.
Lavar Arrington
Yes, I am. Yeah. So again, that's the. That's the latest I. It felt like Nick Sirianni speaking yesterday was going to. To make the call to let Saquon play, but as it turns out, he spoke with reporters a short time ago. And no Saquon Barkley or other starters in the finale against the Giants coming up this weekend. So the record is safe. I also wonder this. If Saquon had broken the record in 17 games, would Eric Dickerson, much like Mark Astino, have accosted him at a. At an autograph signing years later for a faulty record? If that was.
Jonas Knox
Come on now. No, because, man. Come on. Which is funny. That's a funny. Because he really did. He really did want to get at Brett Favre for that one, man. And I mean, and you know what? Them records be mattering, man. That would be, you know, records matter.
Lavar Arrington
You know, what would be the ultimate move by the Giants if, say, Saquon Barkley was, you know, 20 yards shy of the record.
Jonas Knox
Just let him get it.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, man. Because then he would feel guilty about getting it because he'd be like, oh, this is not right. But the Giants could be like, you know what? Michael Strahan got a gift from Brett Favre years ago. We're going to go ahead and give you a gift. And then it would put it. Put a stain on the record completely. And then everybody would be like, what was the point? You know, like, that's still.
Jonas Knox
To me, that's where it gets confusing, you know, Not. Not not any other way. I mean, Brett Favre took a fall. He took a dab. I mean, everybody's seen it. He took a dab. That might have been the worst way to break a record I've ever seen in my entire life. But you know what? It happened.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
And you know, that's a record. It's a record. Mark Gas knew, wanted to tear Brett Favre's head off his neck and that, you know what? And maybe rightfully so. And why does he know what he did?
Lavar Arrington
Why does he go after TJ Watt? TJ Watt tied the record. I mean, come on, man.
Jonas Knox
All I'ma say, all I'm gonna say is, all I'm gonna say is that was a dive. But here's the thing. If you're resting starters and you're saying I'm resting starters because this is what we're doing, I mean, I, I, I get it. I just feel like, why wouldn't you play them long enough to get to the 100? Do you got to play four quarters to get to the 100?
Lavar Arrington
I mean, by, by probably, maybe, maybe.
Jonas Knox
Re, maybe reassess it, reevaluate it at, at halftime. Like, where is he at? He might have ripped off a 50 yarder or 40 yarder or 60 yarder. You never know. I just think it's crazy to be that close to history and not go get it.
Lavar Arrington
If that, if that was Dan Campbell, he would have had Saquon on special teams, too. Like o. Oh, you're going for the record. You're going to hurt it, buddy. Hey, hey, you're on kickoff. Have fun out there. Yeah.
Jonas Knox
So listen, disappointing, but I'm disappointed back, you know. But hey, so it is what it is.
Lavar Arrington
There's the.
Jonas Knox
I'm a Saquon fan.
Lavar Arrington
There's the little bit of breaking news here on the Herd with Lavar Arrington and Jonas Knox. Nick Sirianni makes the announcement. It's official. No Saquon Barkley in the final game of the season trying to break the all time rushing record. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd. Weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific.

Now. The New Orleans Times Picayune is also reporting that the Sugar bowl is going to be postponed in New Orleans. No official word as of yet, but there are two outlets WDSA in NBC or, excuse me, wdsu, an NBC affiliate out of New Orleans. They reported the Sugar bowl is going to be postponed following the tragedy last night in New Orleans. And now we've got the New Orleans Times picked you and saying the same thing. So if we get confirmation on that, we'll let you know. But it does appear like at least it's heading in the right in that direction where they're going to postpone the game until tomorrow. Now, the Rose bowl is coming up later on.
Jonas Knox
Can I ask you a question?
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Before you do that.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
If. If so, the game gets postponed, the winner of that game plays in the Orange Bowl.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Right.
Lavar Arrington
Yep.
Jonas Knox
The Orange bowl is next Thursday.
Lavar Arrington
Double check that.
Jonas Knox
Is there any, like, will there be any conversations in terms of what would take place, what would take place with, you know, the scheduling of the game, if that, you know, if that indeed takes, you know, if that happens?
Lavar Arrington
I don't. I don't think anything would change because you'd still have a week between games. If it plays tomorrow, you'd still have Thursday to Thursday. So I don't know that they would change anything.
Jonas Knox
I mean, is there the possibility, Like, I'm. I'm looking at some. Some information right now, and I'm not sure how. How real it is or. Or what, but it could be. I mean, there. There could be discussions that the game is getting moved to possibly Houston and being played on Friday. So if that were to happen, then they would have to move the Orange bowl back.
Lavar Arrington
I don't. I mean, I don't.
Jonas Knox
I mean, I think that. You don't think so.
Lavar Arrington
I don't. I don't think that they. I think moving the game to Houston does make some sense if you're concerned about the security issues, but I think that those, you know, whoever wins the Sugar bowl, if that's the case, they would just have to play on short rest going into the. To the semifinal against.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. No, man. I don't. I don't see that being fair to the team that advances, you know, because I think it has to be a conversation about it.
Lavar Arrington
The only way you would move a game is if you absolutely had to. And I think that teams.
Jonas Knox
I think this one would kind of qualify for that.
Lavar Arrington
I think. I think the Sugar bowl itself would qualify. I don't think that they would let it impact the following week. Maybe I'm wrong, but I couldn't see that being the case.
Jonas Knox
I got it. I gotta say. I believe that they would have to move it back at least a day or two. Yeah, at least. I mean, that's assuming sensibility and practicalities of making sure that the matchup is what it's supposed to be. That would. That would have to be taken into consideration.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. I mean, look.
Jonas Knox
And look, as. As a. As a. The Penn Stater. I mean, have at it. If they go. If they, if they gonna do it on at the same amount of time, have at it. I mean, that's. That, you know, that's kind of. I feel like that's a. That's an advantage. That's. That's a un to me. I don't feel like that's a. I just don't think that you should have. Even being a Penn Stater, I don't think you want to play against a team that doesn't have enough rest time in between for, for the next game.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, it's, it's, it's. It's a tough spot because how. Look, if they decided they were going to play the game tonight, there would be a pushback against it. If they pushed it back to tomorrow, there would be some people that say, well, why not just move it completely? If they moved it, then it just, it feels like they're kind of in a tough spot no matter what. And obviously, safety is paramount when it comes to all this.
Jonas Knox
So they just went for it on fourth down and got that, that bad boy. Man, they have no respect for asu. It's. You know.
Lavar Arrington
By the way, I would also remember when you were saying Cowboy fans being obnoxious.
Jonas Knox
Yes.
Lavar Arrington
Texas fans are kind of up there as well, too.
Jonas Knox
I'll just say that's Texas. That's Texas.
Lavar Arrington
That's. You know, they, they're, they're, you know, they seem like they're kind of in the same grouping, you know, with, with Cowboy fans.
Jonas Knox
I don't know them, so I will not pass a judgment. I'm not aware of the, you know, the, the patterns of how Texas fans handle things at the college level at Texas. So I'll, I'll stay away from that. But Dallas fans, yeah, they're. They're all about like. And I'll ask them. I'm like, name a street in Dallas or in Fort Worth. Name a zip code. Name an area code, and more often than not, they can't do it. You're a fan of a team, you don't know a street name, you don't know a zip code. You don't know area code. Like, get out of here.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. They'll say, oh, the grassy knoll. Stop. Let's not get out of here. Yeah, you got to venture out a little bit. Well, look, I mean, at least Texas is doing their part. They're winning games and they're in the playoffs. Dallas county will not be a part of that.
Jonas Knox
Now.
Lavar Arrington
You were at the, you were at the Penn State, Boise State playoff game last night there.
Jonas Knox
Yes. That's why I'm. That's why I don't understand why I'm doing radio with you today. If it were. If. If you and Q were doing it, man, I would not be in here doing this show.
Lavar Arrington
What do you.
Jonas Knox
I am. I'm hurting so bad right now, man.
Lavar Arrington
What do you like?
Jonas Knox
A Penn State win led to a whole lot of double mascals and pineapple last night, and it just. It just got over. It just got out of control.
Lavar Arrington
How many Dr. Think you had last night?
Jonas Knox
I didn't count.
Lavar Arrington
Because you haven't been drinking that much lately?
Jonas Knox
No.
Lavar Arrington
At all.
Jonas Knox
Because I've been doing my PhD. Make sure you guys check out the PhD. Weight loss. Yeah. Yeah. Anyway, I have not been drinking very much, and I do not recall how many I had because people just kept handing them to me. So I. I didn't, you know, know, I didn't keep count and I didn't try to keep count because Penn State had won and it was. All was good in. In. In the universe for me. I got to see my son on the sideline, man, it was like I was just so happy, bro. I just let that happiness just take me to. To the mescal and pineapple.
Lavar Arrington
To the bar.
Jonas Knox
To the bar. Straight to the bar.
Lavar Arrington
How's that?
Jonas Knox
I haven't even ate. I haven't even ate. I don't even know the last time I've ate. I. I haven. Anything. I'm hungry as hell. Like, it's like all. All my priorities are all jacked up other than doing this radio show and. And making sure that, you know, we do a fine show.
Lavar Arrington
But by the way, Stick city, Abdul Carter got banged up a little bit last night. Like, you know.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, he hurt his shoulder.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah. So.
Jonas Knox
So hope he feels better soon.
Lavar Arrington
Any. Any thought to whether or not it's going to impact him next game or.
Jonas Knox
I don't know, just gotta wait and see. I mean, these guys are on the verge of. I mean, they're already making history with what they're doing. I tell these guys on the field, I said, everything you guys do from the moment you started playing in the playoffs, you are carving out your own space, your own legacy within the. The tradition of what we have represented, all of these schools. And that's another thing that, you know, maybe doesn't get enough attention. Jonas, when. When we're talking about all, like, people rather focus in on, oh, this team shouldn't be here. This team should, like. How about you focus in on the fact that these teams are, are making history, you know, okay, so the, you know, a team has to win, a team has to lose, and there will be a loser. And to say that, oh, well, as a loser, you're. You're not. Not. You're not touching history. These, these young men have prepared, they played, and they're touching history by playing in this, this new playoff. And, and they're being home games and, and they're being by weeks. So, you know, I think that there's a lot to be said about the, the changing, you know, the changing environment of how many games are played and how these playoffs are taken. But this is the first time. This is the only time. This will be the first time time. And it feels like that. Like it felt like that at the game. The energy of it felt like that. And man, I really enjoyed it. I really enjoyed it felt. It's almost like each of these games are a national championship game, bro. I'm telling you, that's what it feels like. Like the energy of it, the electricity of it. It's like this isn't. It's like every game these young men are playing in is the equivalent of the national championship game game. And so to me, I was, you know, I was really, really driving home to these guys. You know, I was talking to Abdul and, you know, Kobe King and the rest of those guys just about how every single thing they do will go into the, the annals and the history of, of Penn State football.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
And it will always be discussed as the first time. So what you guys do with it is going to play play, you know, a major role in how it's talked about and how it's discussed. It could be you went out in the first round. It could be you made it all the way to this round. It could be you won it all, you know, but whatever that is, you're going to be remembered on a different level to a different capacity than any other team that has ever took the field for Penn State. And I think that that's pretty awesome.
Lavar Arrington
It's also history for the sport. That's why when we were talking earlier about, you know, people that are complaining about the mismatches and all that, it's like, look, they'll get this thing figured out. There's going adjustments to who gets the buys next. That's already been reported that there's going to be adjustments next week to the bye weeks and everything that's involved in that. And so, like, it's the first year, but like the first year of Something that we've never seen before in the sport. Like, it used. There used to be a time where they would determine the college the national champion by voting on it. It wasn't even. Like, you didn't play it out on the field. You voted on it. Remember, there was like a split national champion. One year was Miami.
Jonas Knox
We were part of that too. Well, we didn't get it, but they gave. We went undefeated. Nebraska went undefeated. And they gave it to Nebraska because they said it was Tommy Osborne's turn to win it. You know what I mean?
Lavar Arrington
You know, the writers and the coaches poll and like, there used to be. It was such an outdated, antiquated way that they determined that. And so now we're actually getting the. To play it out, and we're getting to play it out with more teams involved with an opportunity to win it, and yet people just want to complain.
Jonas Knox
Dude, this is history, though. I wish, I wish that the bracket just consisted of the way it's. You're ranked on. On the polls. I really think that, like, why, why wouldn't you. Why wouldn't you just have it where. If it's a 12 team. If it's a 12 team playoff, then take the top 12 teams. Like, I don't get it. If you're ranked. If you're ranked 1, you're number 1.
Lavar Arrington
1.
Jonas Knox
Go figure. Hey, let me, let me throw an interesting concept at you, right? You got this poll, you got the AP poll and you have what, the. The coaches poll or the writers poll? Which one is ap? Coaches.
Lavar Arrington
Coaches.
Jonas Knox
Okay, coaches polls. Let's take the coaches poll. Which one's the one that's most. Most coveted?
Lavar Arrington
The AP.
Jonas Knox
Is it the AP.
Lavar Arrington
The AP before the play, before the playoff rankings? The AP's before. Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Okay. Why do you not just look at what the AP rankings are and take those teams and make that your playoff? I just don't get it if you're ranked number four, but, oh, you're not. You're not that good or your, your strength of schedule or this, that and the other. And like, you're ranked number four.
Lavar Arrington
I think they're trying, they're trying to reward winning your conference, is the thought. And if you're just going by rankings, there's obviously people that don' Think Arizona State should be ranked higher than Texas. And Arizona State won their conference championship game, thus they would get the buy. Like, I think that's the thought. I mean, to me, you know, there's. They added like one or two more steps to the instruction manual than they probably needed to. It could have made this a lot simpler, something along the lines of what you're thinking. But instead here we are and you've got Boise State and Arizona State coming off a bye week and just getting shellacked.
Jonas Knox
Currently with Arizona State, I ain't gonna say shellacked. I mean, they, they're in the game. They held them to a field goal. They're, they're, they're competitive. It's not, they're not running away with it. This is a pivotal, this is a pivotal draft for, for Arizona State. And, and you know what? Like, they're fighting, by the way. They're showing some fight.
Lavar Arrington
Cam Scatter boo runs.
Jonas Knox
He's tough dude.
Lavar Arrington
He fronts like he's always pissed off.
Jonas Knox
He just built strong like that, man. But yeah, I mean, they're being competitive. I. Listen, I, I don't know what's going to happen with this game today, but all I know is, is that when I look at what these guys are doing and what they have the opportunity to do, it makes me wish I could go back and do it all over again in this, this, you know, generation of playing it, you know, I, I just would love to have had the opportunity. I mean, I, I would assume we would have made the playoff every year when I was in school, you know, because you were out of it. You were out of the, the playoff had got introduced. At least the national championship game had got introduced my last year in school. And that was when, or maybe, maybe before, maybe before. I, I'm not, I'm not sure, but I know Florida State played Virginia Tech. Was that the first one? I feel like that was the first one the college championship game could have been.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, I forget.
Jonas Knox
And that was Mike Vick and Peter Ward and Chris Wanke and those guys. Anyway, like one loss knocked us out of contention to be able to play for that national title. One loss. You know what I mean? Like, I would have loved to. Had an opportunity to see what we could do if we made the playoffs, playoffs in our team. We would have traveled well, we would have played well and I would have loved to have been a part of something like that. So I just look at it from, I guess maybe a sentimental value of someone who used to play the game. And if you're there and you have this opportunity, man, God bless and, and enjoy it and take it in. And I, I wouldn't be listening to all of the noise like that must, that must sound crazy to these other teams that, you know, I here, like, you don't belong here, you know? Like, that's got to sound crazy. If you're an Arizona State player. If you're a Boise State player. And yeah, sure, played out where, you know, Boise loss or Indiana lost, but so what? Yeah, they still played the game. They played the game, you know, and not that it just kind of bothers me, man. Like, people that don't have nothing to do with this game, like, from. From the playing it aspect. Like, you don't know what it's like to struggle. You don't know what it's like to be in the trenches and a stranger becomes your friend, your friend becomes your brother. Like, people don't understand what that struggle is like. And then you put it in and you put the work in and you put the time in, and you get rewarded for people to tell you you don't belong.
Lavar Arrington
By the way, anything you want to admit to here on the air? We're now hour three of the program, and you haven't mentioned this. Anything you want to admit to the bar? Any. Any, like, celebrity encounters, maybe at the. At the Fiesta?
Jonas Knox
I met Ralphie. Yeah, I met. He wasn't at the Fiesta Bowl. He was at my hotel.
Lavar Arrington
You met. You met the damn kid from Christmas Story.
Jonas Knox
I met Ralph.
Lavar Arrington
Bringing it up.
Jonas Knox
I met Ralphie, bro. You shoot your eye out.
Lavar Arrington
You shoot your eye out. What did you do when you saw him?
Jonas Knox
I freaked out because I was drunk. A fanboy doubt.
Lavar Arrington
What'd you say?
Jonas Knox
I was like, oh, my gosh, you're Ralphie. Like, you're really him. You're really Ralphie. Like, do you understand? Like, Ralphie's almost, like, in America, he's like. Almost is like. He's on, like, on a. A list. Celebrity, like, most known people. Like, think about it. You'll shoot your eye out, kid.
Colin Cowherd
Merry Christmas.
Lavar Arrington
What's his name? Is it Peter Billings? Is that his name?
Jonas Knox
And I don't know Peter Billingsley.
Lavar Arrington
Billings. Billingsley. Come on. What's the difference if you're drinking? It all sounds the same. What's your problem, Lee? Why do you have to be so correctable here on the show? Did he. So was he a nice guy?
Jonas Knox
Cool dude, man? Cool dude. We talked. Cool dude.
Lavar Arrington
Was he ripping drinks, too?
Jonas Knox
I. I wasn't. I was not in any condition to pay attention to, like, taking in all that information. He was just. He was really cool, dude, man.
Lavar Arrington
Nice guy.
Jonas Knox
Really cool. Real gracious dude. I was like, man, like, you do realize, even to this day, I watch you every single year. Like, you got people like, Jesus, you talk about them like people talk about them every day or go see them once a week.
Lavar Arrington
I was thinking the same thing.
Jonas Knox
Then you got like, name some other people though, that really, like, they're connected. Santa Claus.
Lavar Arrington
I was thinking the same thing, man. Like, whenever I go to church, there's always like a picture of Ralphie on the bike. I was thinking the same thing.
Jonas Knox
No, no, I didn't put Ralphie on the Bible. I'm saying there are certain people throughout our history that you talk about them every. Like, some people get it every day, some people get it every week, some people get it once a year.
Lavar Arrington
I'd love to know what his royalties are. Lee, do you have. Do you know what Ralphie gets every time?
Jonas Knox
Looks like he's struggling, I'll tell you that.
Lavar Arrington
I mean, I would love to hear that. Let's go live to our. I have a thought on Ralphie's royalties. Insider. Chris. Perfect for the latest. I don't. But I did just see, I didn't realize made a sequel to A Christmas Story. Yeah, A Christmas Story. Christmas. So, like, I know what Ralphie looks like grown up and that's the part that's like really messing with me. So I know he doesn't look that far off. No, he doesn't. He. He looks, he just looks like a, you know, 40 year old version. Hey, stretched out. Yeah. Yeah. So I know exactly the face Lavar saw down there. Like, we work with Justin Cooper, who was the star, and Liar. And he just.
Jonas Knox
And that's crazy. That's cool. He looks the same. He just looks like he. He smokes weed.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, just imagine. Yeah, just imagine the little kid from Liar Ly. Little kid from Liar Liar with a gambling problem and pot in his back pocket. He goes to like every Tool concert in Oregon. He's like, you know, he hangs out at Hot Topic. He goes to the World Series of Poker every year. And he, you know, he smokes.
Jonas Knox
I mean, no offense to my boy Coop. Coop is my dog. No, no, no, listen. No shade to coup, but this ain't even. He smoked that bud. He said that. Smoke that weed. He. Hey, Coop, dog. No shade. But as far as kid actors, like, I don't think anyone even comes close to touching Ralphie of Christmas Story.
Lavar Arrington
Even Macaulay Culkin, who had a great run.
Jonas Knox
Even Macaulay listening.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, Macaulay Culkin had a great run. But yeah, I would still go Ralphie from A Christmas Story story all the way.
Jonas Knox
There's something like, there's just, I mean, I will say, like Like Macaulay Culkin is. He's. That's a good one. I mean, that's, That's. That's in the conversation because every single year, you're going to watch Home Alone. Yeah, you're going to watch Home Alone. But it doesn't have the historical nostalgic connected to it. Like Christmas Story. Like, Christmas Story was from a different time, a different generation. Like, it really. You could really feel that. That move. Like, there were so, so many signature movement moments. Like. Oh, yeah. Like, there was so the. The kid getting in, getting his tongue caught on the. On the light pole. Like, there were so many signature moments in that. The little boy. The little boy running with his. With his snow suit on. You can remember those snow suits. Did you have. Well, you. You wouldn't remember that, but people like us from the culture, cold. We remember running around in them snowsuits when it was cold outside. Like, bro, you had to wear a snow suit like that to go to school. You imagine that you had to peel yourself out of that snow suit to go just sit in class and be in class, like, not burning up because you got a snow suit on. Then you got to put it back on. You got to put it back on when you leave. Like, it took you back to a time, a day and a place where it was just, you know, I don't know. Just amazing, man. So, yeah, I met Ralphie. I met Ralphie.
Lavar Arrington
That's awesome.
Jonas Knox
That's pretty cool, man.
Lavar Arrington
Lee, any update on how much he made? You can't get a hold of that guy's W2S. We're not asking for a lot here. Apparently a lot of people ask that question.
Colin Cowherd
No.
Lavar Arrington
Cannot find the royalties, but I do know his net worth, which is around $12 million. Nice. Good for him. Good for him.
Jonas Knox
Off of one movie, and that's probably like, that 12 million is probably like, you break that down, down, you know? I don't know, man. Yeah, I don't know. He's. He's collecting every single. He's like Mariah Carey.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, yeah.
Jonas Knox
He's collecting every single year.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, he's probably a better singer than Mariah at this point, too.
Jonas Knox
Maybe. I met that dude. I met that dude last night. Sound like I met. I totally fanboyed out, man. I met that dude last night, bro.
Lavar Arrington
Sound like Iowa Sam in the store. All it is, the herd here on sports radio.
Jonas Knox
Damn.

Lavar Arrington opens the discussion by analyzing the outcomes of the first five games in the expanded 12-team College Football Playoff. He expresses frustration over the lack of competitiveness and predictability, leading to questions about the purpose of expanding the playoff format.
Lavar Arrington [02:45]: "Through the first five games of the College Football Playoff, what we’ve gotten is basically chalk. All the results that you expected and pretty uncompetitive games."
Jonas Knox counters by emphasizing the inevitability of complaints regardless of the playoff structure, comparing it to other sports and scenarios where outcomes don’t always meet expectations.
Jonas Knox [10:53]: "If a team gets granted and earns the opportunity to be in the playoff and the bracket is made, shut the F up and enjoy the bracket, enjoy the games."
Both hosts agree that while the expanded playoff aims to add intrigue, it hasn't quite achieved the desired excitement, and adjusting team selections or formats might not quell the inherent dissatisfaction among fans.

The conversation shifts to Saquon Barkley, who is on the verge of breaking the all-time single-season rushing record. Lavar discusses the Philadelphia Eagles' dilemma in deciding whether to rest Barkley to protect him for the postseason or allow him to chase the record against his former team, the New York Giants.
Nick Sirianni [22:12]: "I'll always do what's best for the team and then also what's the best for the individuals that are going for the record."
Lavar and Jonas debate the rationale behind the decision to rest Barkley, questioning whether personal accolades should outweigh team success, especially considering the significant impact on the team's playoff prospects.
Jonas Knox [25:35]: "They went to Saquon Barkley and said, 'What do you think?' If he would have put up any more fight whatsoever, I don't think they would have gone against him."
Jonas criticizes the decision, comparing it to how other sports figures are treated when approaching records, arguing that individual achievements should not be sacrificed for potential team benefits.
Jonas Knox [26:38]: "If I'm Nick Sirianni, we're going to get this record. You play the game. You play the game."
The hosts highlight the tension between honoring individual milestones and prioritizing team strategy, reflecting broader debates within sports management.
