Colin Cowherd
Oh, it's a Tuesday. It's a good one today. Urban Meyer and Nick Wright and Albert Brear and J. Mac and me. This is gonna be a good one live. It's the herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. J. Mac. You know I wear the pink shirt when I want. When I mean, when I stand on business. And today I am standing on business today. Standing on business. Okay. All right, I hear you. I am ready to roll. So I know people think I'm crazy in Pittsbur when I suggest considering moving off TJ Watt. But I saw a story this morning. TJ Watt, great player by the way. Tough plays through injuries, productive. He's not at Steelers mandatory minicamp. Mandatory minicamp starts in the NFL today. That's when the veterans show up. And so there's a handful of guys that are like I'm not going to show up. So he's not going to show up. And you know why? Because he knows he owns Mike Tomlin, he owns the Steelers. He's going to get whatever he wants. Everybody in Pittsburgh owns a T.J. watt jersey. They don't want any backlash. The Rooneys, small town. They don't want any backlash. And he's going to get whatever he wants. T.J. watt. Right now the Steelers lead the NFL in defensive spending and that's pre T.J. watt contract. And he's going to get 40 to 47 million large per year. Okay, you want to know the two teams in the NFL going into this season with the lowest defensive spending? The Eagles and the Rams. Both in the super bowl bubble. Yeah, Kansas City. Six of the top seven contracts for Kansas City and their well run front office offense. Eagles eight for eight of their biggest contracts Offense the Steelers, all five big contracts, five biggest all defense and that's pre TJ Watt deal. He knows he has them. Everybody in town owns a jersey. The Rooneys don't want backlash. Tomlin's a defensive guy, he's going to take him to the cleaners. So think about this. The Steelers have a 41 year old quarterback who's like partially committed on a sweet deal and they're going to back up the Brinks truck for TJ Watt. And this is not a criticism of TJ Watt but in four playoff games he's got one sack, no force, fumbles, six tackles. That's because when you get to the playoffs in the AFC or the nfc you face the best left tackles and it's hard to get past those guys. That's why Micah Parsons playoff stats, he disappears, he gets gobbled up. A lot of TJ Watts numbers been against that bad Bengals O line, you know, or bad Cleveland O line. And this is not anti TJ Watt. He's a hell of a player. He's their best player. He's tough, he's physical, he plays through pain. Oh, for four in the playoffs, one sack. So I mean the Steelers and I've been saying this, they're your buddy who's got a Rolex but sleeps on a cheap mattress. Bro, get your priorities in order. Since 2019, you're 26, 28, 29th in every offensive stat. But hey, you got a great deal on the Aaron Rodgers contract. So I, I, you're looking for discounts at quarterback. You got a six round draft pick, Mason Rudolph again, 41 year old Aaron Rodgers. I mean nobody gets more out of less or less out of more, take your pick than the Steelers at quarterback. I mean they, but TJ Watt knows.
J. Mac
They'Re going to pay him.
Colin Cowherd
So they have the number one defensive spending in the league. Pre, pre T.J. watt. And I was looking at this this morning. You think I'm the crazy person. Eight years, no playoff wins, the house is on fire. I bring a fire extinguisher and I'm the crazy person. I'm the guy that's out of touch. You just keep clinging to that T.J. watt jersey in Pittsburgh. And again, he's a really good player. His brother, older brother was a great player. That's not the question. The question is he's going to get 45 million bucks and he knows it. Everywhere he goes in Pittsburgh There's a T.J. watt jersey and it translates to nothing in the playoffs. I'm the crazy one. I saw a headline this morning, I laughed. The Aaron Rodgers contract is a major bargain for the Steelers. They never get those on defense. They, they pay top dollar for everybody on defense. And the Eagles, eight biggest contracts, eight for eight, all offense. And I've been saying this, you want your defense, the Rams, the Chiefs, the Eagles, they get this. You want your offense to be experienced veterans. It's the smart side of the. You have to choreograph the offense. I want an expensive veteran quarterback, right? I want receivers I can trust. I want a great left tackle. The most underrated position in football is center. The Bears went out and spent money on a center. The Eagles always have great centers. The Chiefs have the best center. The Ravens have the second best center. I want to spend money on offense, defense, I want them to be young, twitchy and cheap. Outside of one great pass rusher, I'll pay for Hendrickson, Max Crosby. And you say, well, what about the Steelers? Problem with Steelers, you pay everybody. You're paying safeties and linebackers and interior defensive linemen. So. And I'm the crazy one. Okay, sure. I'm just here with a fire extinguisher. I don't know, eight years, no playoff wins. I'm just suggesting something new. Of course. T.J. watts going to get everything he wants. Okay, so the second story I saw. So I didn't like the firing of Tibbs. I just didn't like it. I thought he built culture. I think the Knicks issues are personnel and contracts. It's not coaching. I don't think he's the most creative guy. But there's a story this morning from Brian Windhorst, who's excellent. And Brian Windhorst is saying, basically, the Knicks are interested in Jason Kidd and Jason Kidd is interested in the New York Knicks. And I don't get it. There is no way I'm leaving Dallas with Cooper Flag arriving from Duke. There is no way I'm leaving Cache Knicks, cash cow, Cooper Flag, Dallas. Forget the state tax thing, which is obviously a huge benefit, but if you look at Dallas's young talent, Cooper Flag's the best domestic player in a decade. Plus, he's going to be 23 points next year. He's fantastic. And then Derek Lively, another Duke, he's 2171, rim protector for a decade plus he's 21 years old. He's a kid. So Cooper flag is what, 18, 19 unlimited. I got Anthony Davis, who in my opinion, the last three years have been the best defensive player in the league. He's 24 and 11 every night. Kyrie Irving, we're not so sure. But you got PJ Washington, you got Gafford, you got Max Christie. There's a lot to play with here. I like the Knicks, but now Mikhail Bridges, he wants a new deal. And Brunson's got a big contract and so does Cat, and so does Mitchell. Robinson and OG Got paid. And I. I feel with. I listen. I can like the Knicks a lot, but I know what they are. I get two things with Dallas that the New York Knicks don't get. I get, between the two teams, the best players. Anthony Davis. Anthony Davis is better than Brunson.
J. Mac
I'm sorry.
Colin Cowherd
2411 offensively, unbelievable. Defensive player and rebounder and shot blocker. Best player on the Mavericks or the Knicks is Anthony Davis. And the greatest trajectory by far is Cooper Flag. The Knicks are guys that are expensive, and we know what they are. They're good, but they got a ceiling. They're limited. I mean, Brunson's never going to be an elite defender. Cats atrocious defensively on, on, on, you know, most possessions. Robinson will never be great offensively. Bridges plays every night. That guy hasn't missed the game since seventh grade. But you know what? He is classic Villanova guys. He squeezes every ounce of talent at it. But I know what the Knicks are, and what they are is getting really expensive. You don't know what Derek Lively and Cooper Flag are going to be. One could end up being the best young rim protector in the league, and Cooper Flag could be the best player in the league. I'm not leaving that. There's no way. When you. You cannot leave that kind of trajectory that there's no way. I mean, I was. I was watching something the other day. I was. I was watching somebody talking about a young Michael Jordan, and this person was like, oh, I knew he was going to be great, but nobody knew he would be that. I mean, we all knew Tiger woods was going to be great. Nobody thought he would be that. I mean, we all knew Shohei Ohtani was special. We didn't know he was going to be that. That's what you're talking about with Cooper Flag, you could have a 28 point a game. He's, like I said, he's Jason Tatum, but aggressive. If you took Jason Tatum's game and you said it's 8% better and it's more aggressive, you'd have the face of the league. Cooper Flag's got the aura. He's got Duke. He's got the game. The only thing he doesn't have is NBA experience. So again, you can have the cachet. I'll take the cash cow. Also, I mean, I understand the east doesn't have as many good NBA general managers as the west, so it's easier. But, I mean, Brunson and Josh Hart and Robinson and Cat and Bridges. I know there's a limitation right now. Cleveland will be better next year. Eventually, Tatum comes back. Watch out. The Pacers may never get worse over the next five years. I don't know what I get with Derek Lively and Cooper Flag. And if I have the best rim protector and Derek Lively, 7121 years old, just getting better, that that means Cooper Flagg doesn't have to worry. The Dallas Mavericks between Anthony Davis and Derek Lively and PJ Washington, they got all sorts of rim protectors. Translation. Cooper Flagg can get out on the break. He can just say, 12ft from the hole, give me the ball. I'm up the floor leading the break. What a great. And Jason Kidd knows that. Kidd's one of the great point guard talents of all time. And Cooper Flagville, not a point guard, is a 6, 8 wing. But he's an unbelievable transition player. So I would not take. I would not leave Dallas. I make the argument that now that Laker fans have seen Luka's lack of defensive commitment and lack of cardio commitment. Had the Dallas Mavericks stayed healthy and not fallen apart physically, I think they would have gone to the Western Conference finals. I think their roster is unbelievable, with or without Kyrie. All right, J. Mac, we got Albert Brear last hour on some inside stuff in the Aaron contract. Nick Wright, Urban Meyer as well. Feeling it. Big night of sleep, buddy. Feeling. Taking the guys out tonight for a night on the town.
Ryan
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
I got Ryan playing volleyball all day yesterday. He's. I mean, this. This thing, it is cooking out here.
Ryan
You didn't tell me that. Wait, Colin. I did work it. You. You joke that Giannis should want to stay in the east, but doesn't the same apply to Jason Kidd? Shouldn't he want to go east, win with the Knicks? Let's be real. Even though Kyrie Irving may come back in, you know, the All Star break.
Colin Cowherd
We don't know the Mavs are not.
Ryan
Top five in the West. Next. The Knicks open the season top three in the East.
Colin Cowherd
No, I totally disagree. I think ad Cooper Flag live league. I think it's an excellent team. Max Christie can even play. I think it's an excellent team.
Ryan
Wow.
Colin Cowherd
I really do. I'm. I am so high on the Dallas Mavericks top West. Absolutely. No question. I. Absolutely. No question.
Ryan
Just do this real quick. Are they better than okc?
Colin Cowherd
No. Are they better than Denver by next year? Yeah. Oh, come on. Jamal Murray plays himself into shape. Denver's become, by the way, they don't want Porter anymore. They don't want to pay Murray anymore. They love Gordon Jokic and nobody else. Dallas's whole roster I like.
Ryan
Okay. Are they better than the Lakers? Absolutely not.
Colin Cowherd
Yes. Absolutely. Yes. Absolutely.
Ryan
Come on.
Albert Brear
Really?
Colin Cowherd
No, I. No, I think I. I am. I am. I. Listen. I don't like their football team. I think the Dallas Mavericks next year, healthy with Cooper Flag are the real deal. I think he's going to be so much better than people think. I trust a couple of my NBA guys. They think he's just going to excel with Jason Kidd. I love he is going to totally excel with that staff next year.
Ryan
Whoa, whoa, that's a hot take. And trade TJ Watt. What a start to the show.
Colin Cowherd
You know it's funny that when you suggest you would think in Pittsburgh with a high standard that eight years of no playoff wins the suggestion that you may want to scale back off guys in four playoff games that don't that have you know like one sack it would be or 45 million. By the way, have I not been trade Micah Parsons.
Ryan
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
I mean again you can get there are certain positions in football that are readily available from the draft every year. Wide receivers. There's a lot of pass rushers. There's a lot of 6 foot 3 guys that are 250 and and those there's so many big great athletes. That's why there's so many good pass rushers. There's so many good tight ends. We live in a society with big, strong, fast, twitchy athletes and it's like a lot of them play tight end now. I mean tight end now is basically it's a wide receiver that blocks half these guys run four five fives at tight end. So I I to me it's I don't know, I don't think it's crazy to suggest you have the highest defensive spending in the league. Pre T.J. watt making 45 million. You got to make some tough choices here eventually.
Albert Brear

Okay, so according to Mary Kay Cabot, who I trust covers the Cleveland Browns, Dylan Gabriel got the first set of 11 on elevens. Working with the first team offense, first team defense. Shador Sanders worked with the second team offense and against the second team defense. So we have a piece of video from Shador Sanders. Let's roll the tape on this. I am told it looks a little like Johnny Unitis meets Joe Montana. Look at that deep ball, my lord. In a heavy, gusty wind, it pierces the Ohio weather. Here's another one over the middle. You know, you don't see any Dylan Gabriel video. You're just seeing lots of Shador. Look at that second team scrub. Wide receiver barely gets open and he places that cookie right in the jar. J. Mac, what do you got to say for yourself? I'm just saying, you know, I. I.
Ryan
Had to look up that cornerback. It turns out he works at Chipotle and he's trying to make the Browns. So that's who Shedeur Sanders is going to be. Secondary timeout.
Colin Cowherd
Are these now, My staff just sent these numbers. Are those today's? Stop. Okay, listen to this. Okay, listen to this. So take Flaco out. He didn't. He didn't play. Dylan Gabriel went 7 of 18. Oh, no. Kenny Pickett went 6 of 10, which sums up his career. Shadour Sanders, 10 of 12, two touchdowns, no picks. He keeps putting these numbers up at OTA and mandatory camp. I'm sorry, but he's exactly what he was in college. Accurate. Shador Sanders, 10 of 12, two touchdown. Now, last week when he was good, it was like, well, it's OTAs. I get it. I get it. But he was accurate. So here, the Browns quarterbacks minicamp today. Who's got the best numbers again? Shador Sanders.
Ryan
You need the context. The Shador was playing against backups and second stringers, and Dylan Gabriel's with the ones. Okay, I just need to remind people I was pro Shador before the draft, and then the NFL basically rejected him. All of the NFL. And he fell to the fifth round. And because of that, that's why I'm like, I don't think he's a starter. I don't dislike Shador Column. But you have to admit the entire NFL passed on him for a reason.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, well, the entire NFL first round passed on Jalen hurts.
J. Mac
I.
Colin Cowherd
They make mistakes. There are guys that have been drafted. I mean, I wouldn't get too caught up on will they make mistakes. There was his dad's super bowl tour saying, we're not playing for these teams, directed right at the teams that we're going to draft him and owners in the NFL, it's an all boys club. They don't want to hear that you don't want to play for their team. So there were people that just said, I mean, when, when Deion Sanders during Super bowl week went on very popular shows and the message was, there are teams he will not play for. He wasn't talking about the Bills, Ravens and Chiefs and Eagles. He was talking about the Saints and the Giants and the owners that would draft him. That's why if. Did you notice this after the super bowl when Dion, you know, had his sort of parade through talk shows? Did you notice after that super bowl week, media week, the Jackson dart is the apple of the New York Giants. I started why they're like, because probably ownership said, we're not interested. We're not, we're not taking him. And also there's the report that he went, you know, Shador went to the Giants, wasn't great on the board. So my take is I think it got personal. I think his dad was involved. I think there was a lot of stuff with Shador that turned people off and owners started getting involved in decision making. All I'm saying is if you look at these OTA and minicamp numbers, Dylan Gabriel's inaccurate. Kenny Pickett is Kenny Pickett. Flacco is not doing much because it's his job to lose. And Shador Sanders continues to have the best numbers. Here's Albert Brear on the Browns quarterback race.
Unknown
It's really hard when you look at the early part of their schedule, unless they're a lot better than they were last year, for them to be coming out of that in a real position of strength. And so I do think Joe Flacco is likely going to be the week one starter. Joe Flacco has been great in the building. He's been great for that quarterback room. He's been great for the young quarterbacks. I think you'll hear Shador and Dylan Gabriel talk about him that way when the media talks to them this week. So I think Joe's going to get a shot. And I think, you know, if Joe looks good in July and August, you know, then you'll see the team behind him. And then you get to September. And his ability to hold onto that job won't just be about his own play, it'll be about where the team is.
Colin Cowherd
The Browns probably fairly have the weakest receiving core in the league. So Shador is working with their second team receivers. Their first team receivers are the weakest unit in the league. I mean, I don't think that's taking a shot. It's a, it's a bad receiving unit. Shador is getting the second. He's getting the leftovers and he goes 10 for 12.
Ryan
All right, so I have a comp for you, Colin. Are you ready? It was a gentleman named Lonzo Ball who was an acclaimed college basketball player for a minute. Then he goes to the draft. His dad was piping up. Do you remember? I had to look this up in summer league with the Lakers. Lonzo Ball had a game where he had 36, 11 and eight against the Sixers.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, he's the future of the NBA.
Ryan
Lonzo Ball's gonna crush it. And he came out and was like, you know, squashed like a bug as a rookie and he clearly could not play. I wonder if there's a parallel with this OTA nonsense where Shadors cooking and Lonzo Ball in summer.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, all time most accurate college quarterback was Shador Sanders with a 74% completion rate. Shedeur's total stats from OTAs in today's minicamp. 26 of 35, 74% completion rate, eight touchdowns, one pick. He is exactly as a pro OTN minicamp.
J. Mac
What?
Colin Cowherd
He was the college player. 26 of 35, eight touchdowns, one pick. And it's not getting reps with the first team. Okay, all I'm saying is you can keep telling me something. I keep getting this video with these lasers piercing the air in Ohio. That muggy, difficult air to throw in. All I see is like. It's like watching the movie Star wars, just lasers.

Urban Meyer now joining us, Fox Sports College Football Analyst I got a, I got a bunch of stuff I want to talk about big picture and small picture. But I, I was reading all my college football magazines and the nil is one thing, the transfer portals another. So Brian Kelly went heavy portal, Lincoln Riley heavy portal, Deion Sanders, heavy portal. Belichick, heavy portal. You can buy players, you can't buy chemistry. Ohio State has bought elite players, but for some reason, Ryan Day has made it work. Where they've had an influx of guys, maybe they just get better guys, but I'm watching a lot of these. I think Lincoln can coach. I think Brian can coach. I. I think Deion's been a good coach. How is Ohio State use the Nil? And it's worked for them. It hasn't disrupted chemistry.
Urban Meyer
You know, a lot of guys equated it to back in the day when Kansas State was getting all those junior college players, and most college coaches avoided that because they didn't want to disrupt their culture. You look at Mike Norvell, that might be the, you know, the case study for you take an undefeated team, take a bunch of transfers, and they took some wrong guys. Quite honestly, watch them play from one year to the other, and they're not even close to what it was. Where you look at Ohio State, I think Ohio State, and I've talked to Coach Day about this and Mark Pantoni, their gm, is that they have never been more cautious about what they bring into that program. First of all, you don't need to change much. They recruit on a level. They recruit on an incredible level. So if you're going to bring someone in, you know, I finally, I got there at a point a couple times in my career where do not take that person. If that can disrupt the culture, don't do it. And as a result, we let some good players get away from us, but we're not going to change our culture. So that's what they're doing.
Colin Cowherd
Speaking of Big Ten, you know James Franklin very well. College football is going through massive change. And. And I've said this. I don't care if it's tech, it's AI. It always becomes the wild, Wild West. Bitcoin will eventually settle down, but when anything's changing, it's wild. And you try to get guardrails. Do you think college football has put in enough guardrails when you talk to guys like James Franklin, or are they kind of terrified the portal, the nil, and where it's going.
Urban Meyer
I did. I just spoke to James Franklin, and we have a great relationship. And the one thing I want to hit is that I'm mesmerized by this whole. The new commission that's going to now enforce rules. And. And I kind of lost it on someone the other day on a podcast where they said, well, finally we have rules. And we have guardrails. And I'm like, wait a minute. For 40 years, they. We had to take a test on a 3 to 4 inch rule book. We had to sign our name to saying that we're in compliance. It wasn't the fact that there weren't rules or rules for everything. There was no compliance. There was no enforcement. The NCAA could write a book on how not to enforce and how not to investigate. And it was not their fault. They had no subpoena power. And there is no. It was toothless. Every time they made the decision on a. On infraction case, the litigated Tom Mars, I heard that name. You know, Tom Mars is going to sue and. And they lose. So my understanding, Colin, this is the game changer. This new commission is going to have subpoena power that will expediate the process of investigation. And I'm hoping that it also, if once you're investigated, you don't tell the truth, you know, the punishment is going to be ridiculous and it's not going to be four to five years after the fact. And then they say that the Power Four conferences. This came from a Big 12 big. The Big 12 commissioner, we spoke to him as well, is that they're all going to have to sign to. To be part of this. They're going to sign an agreement that they're going to first follow the rules and they're not going to litigate if this commission finds them be guilty. I'm skeptical because of 40 years of watching it. And if that can happen, then you can officially say that college football is in compliance. I hope it does.
Colin Cowherd
But here's my question. I can buy high school players now. What is. I mean, what can't I do if I can buy players? What is really the death penalty now for college football that a compliance guy comes in and says, okay, cowardice, that is off limits. What's off limits now?
Urban Meyer
Well, everyone from Texas Tech, we had that coach on our podcast the other day. From Texas Tech to Penn State to Ohio State, Alabama, they have a salary cap. It's $20.5 million. Anything above that is nil. But that has to go through Deloitte and they have to. They can't give a, you know, some outrageous number through that collective or through the nil issue. So once again, I'm skeptical as can be. But if this is as a fact, I love what I'm hearing. That means that you cannot go. Ohio State's gonna have the same sourcap as Texas Tech and then the nil on Top of that is gonna be all scrutinized and turn in the proper paperwork and say we can't give that 17 year old $5 million to go do a charity event and sign his name. You know that that's kind of stuff was going on. And so if this is all true, Colin, what I've heard in the last three days, I'm excited about it, yet extremely skeptical.
Unknown
Okay.
Colin Cowherd
I get a lot of, I get a lot of pushback on this. I did not grow up in a family of great tradition. And I've said before, Lincoln Riley's job is to get to the playoff. And Lincoln Riley's like, timeout. I don't get Washington State anymore. I don't get Oregon State, I don't get Cal, I don't get Arizona. I get, I have to go to Madison and Ann Arbor and Columbus. And the only teams that came to the Pac 12 came to the Big 10 were Oregon, Washington and my rival. So I don't get any cream puffs. So Lincoln Riley, I don't know if Lincoln Riley is spearheading this, but people at USC are like, so we want another November cold weather game? No, we'll do, we'll play in Notre Dame on a year to year basis only in September. We'll play in South Bend and we're not playing in November with a Buckeyes coming up. So my take is this idea that, oh, college football, Notre Dame, usc. The highest rated game last year was Georgia Texas. It was a non rivalry game. If you, if I'm usc, why do I have to play Notre Dame too? Notre Dame, they won't join a conference. It's on them, not on me. Is it not?
Urban Meyer
It is, but I coached at Notre Dame and I guess there's. I'm a 60 year old, it's probably act like a 75 year old because I love their pageantry, I love the rivalries. Please don't take away that game. Please don't move the Ohio State Wolverine game the middle of the season. You know, we saw what happened when Texas quit playing Texas A and M. I thought it was awful. Navy people did it. You know, BYU should be playing Utah. So I hope that doesn't go away. I get it. I understand you're. But I'm also saying if I'm a Notre Dame fan, I'm writing a check. You're playing usc. If I'm a USC fan, you're playing Notre Dame.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, maybe Notre Dame should consider joining a conference. All you golden domers out there, hey, we don't need a conference. It's funny how you guys just. Notre Dame just signed a 12 year deal with Clemson. And you know why they did that? Because the ACC stinks and they need one great game on their sketch. That's cool. You know that's true by the way.
Urban Meyer
Absolutely correct.
Colin Cowherd
How much pressure. I saw the over under on usc, seven and a half games and I think that's accurate. I think they're best players of safety. I think they're very, very young. I think they're an eight win team at some point. When's the hammer come down? Or do you think this remains long term? Lincoln is fine. What if they go 8 and 5? Is that good enough?
Urban Meyer
Well, I guess the way I've always looked at USC is I equate them to Ohio State, Alabama, Texas and you know, Florida. I just, I've always looked at USC as one of the top five jobs in America. So I've got a lot of respect for Lincoln Riley and I never, I promised myself I would never call for jobs because I'm not going to do that. However, when seven, eight wins is acceptable at usc, that's when you, you know, I, I don't know, I don't agree with that. I think you take a five hour, you take a five hour net and drop it on USC and you see the best players in the country. So I think this is the year the recruiting. Here's a question about usc. They have the number one recruiting class in the country right now. Should they have that every year? I mean USC is USC and I think they're going to have a great year. And I think we're not after this conversation but 8 and 5, go 8 and 5 at Ohio State and see what happens.
Colin Cowherd
Hell no. It's a whole different ball game. I want to talk Arch Manning for a second because I haven't seen enough of him. But what I see I like. He's put on weight, he moves well. If you knew you had Arch Manning and you knew the speculative nature. Here comes the media. I remember when you were at Florida you could kind of fend off the media. Those days are over. Kids have their social media. You can't. There's too many platforms, there's too many media people, there's drones everywhere. What do you do if you're sarcastic? Do you just sort of say if you're Sark, hey, he's a Manning, he'll be able to handle it. Arch, I don't remember. Maybe Tebow, I don't remember a college quarterback. That was more Anticipated to play in 20 years. Maybe Tebow than Arch Manning. How did you coach Tebow going into his last year at Florida knowing the onslaught of media and expectations?
Urban Meyer
Well, quick history lesson. Tebow won the Heisman Trophy his sophomore year, won the national champions junior year and he was the golden child and that all of a sudden people turned on him. You know, he's not an NFL quarterback, he's throwing motions. Know this and that. We win by two scorers against Tennessee and that was enough. Tebow's not playing well and I saw that the media and the people kind of turned not, not the Gator Nation but the country kind of turn on a little bit. I couldn't understand that, you know, whether it was they, they criticize his religion or whatever. But my answer would be you embrace it. I mean, Arch Fanning is there for a reason. It's not because of his last name. Because if he was a bad quarterback and he had that last name then he wouldn't be getting it. He's a potentially a great quarterback. Embrace it. That's life in the big city and you're going to get scrutinized and you're getting far too much credit for when the team plays well. So I, I think Sark, Sark's the perfect guy for him. Sark's been in it. He's a quarterback guy. He's. He played quarterback himself and he's coached at Alabama. So he's got the, Arch has got the perfect coach to handle those expectations.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, finally back to Ohio State. They've never won back to back titles and a lot of it is just the reality of that program. Right. Like it's, it's. And now they've got a, they've got a Michigan issue. Although I think they'll overcome it this year. They have to replace, I mean I think 16 starters. So it's a. Now they have the two best players in the country in my opinion, Caleb Downs and Smith. So that's a great starting block and it is Ohio State and they recruited an amazing level and I think they won a national title yet last year without a great O line, which is hard to do. So I think they'll be better up front. What is your number one concern though for Ryan Day? No back to back natties ever at Ohio State. What is the messaging you think to a team last year that pulverized people in the playoffs, humiliated Tennessee? What's the messaging?
Urban Meyer
Well, it always starts with the quarterback and they got a new one and you have seen and Klein Holtz and you have, you know, but that. That position's got to get good and get good fast. As they open with Texas, the biggest issue, I think, is when a team wins a national championship, everything changes. I talked to Joe Madden in 2016. He just came off one in a world Series. And I went saw him at the Chicago Cubs when he was the manager of the Cubs, and he was miserable. And he said how hard it is to, you know, have back to back. It doesn't happen very often. Why? Because complacency sets in the program. So I think that's Ryan Dave's number one and not so much with the players. He's replacing a bunch of players. I'm talking about the coaching staff. I'm talking about everybody in that organization is that, you know, enough of patting on the back. That one is ancient history. That's over. And that's going to be the challenge. And I talked to many coaches who've won national titles is, you know, dealing with a complacency that seeps into your program is the biggest issue. Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, your buddy Belichick, I said yesterday, I think they'll be fine. I don't care about Jordan Hudson. She does his social media stuff. But he does have two of his sons on the staff and one of Mike Lombardi's sons on the staff. And I said, there's nothing against that. Pete Carroll's son was on a staff. And like, I'm not anti that, but I do wonder. It does make me think a little bit. When you're building a staff, Bill doesn't understand that you got, you know, 17 hours. Kids have class, they're younger, less mature, moodier. If I said to you, Bill's gonna have one big challenge that's gonna surprise him. You've coached both pro and college. Not the stuff that's obvious. But if I said there's one thing Bill's gonna call you in week six and complain about, what is it going to be?
Urban Meyer
I think the difference between NFL player that's his job and a college kid, unfortunately, sometimes they don't look at it that way at all. You know, they look at it as, this is a means to an end, to get an education. And I'm saying that's great. You're asking me what the. What the issue Coach Belichick I think will face is the fact that there's going to be players on the team that don't, you know, that don't throw everything into it like you do in the NFL if you don't Throw the NFL, you get cut in college football, you got to motivate, inspire these guys. It is what it is. Now, you can make a change after the season, but him and his staff are going to have to pull greatness out of people that, you know, they're. They just don't have the same. It's not survival in college. And I think that that'll be his biggest challenge.
Colin Cowherd
Urban Meyer. Getting any golf in a bunch of.
Urban Meyer
Golf, a bunch of travel grandkids, doing good.
Colin Cowherd
That's good life, my friend.
Urban Meyer
How about you?
Colin Cowherd
I had a terrible round of golf in Rhode Island. I don't want to talk about it, but I got new clubs, so that's my excuse. And I didn't drink. I was just. I don't want to talk about it. It was terrible. I couldn't. I couldn't find the greens. Whatever, you know, it's new clubs.
J. Mac
That's the.
Colin Cowherd
It's new clubs. When they get the.
J. Mac
That's right.
Colin Cowherd
When I get those grooved, I'll be fine.
Urban Meyer
You look great, Colin.
Colin Cowherd
So do you, coach. Good seeing you. Urban Meyer. Yeah, it is the nil, the transfer portal, all that stuff. I love college football. I can't wait to watch Ohio State, Arch Manning, usc, Notre Dame. You can make all these changes and you can complain about it. I love college football. I'm pouring over my magazines, flying and hanging out this weekend. I'm all fired up. So, I don't know, people complain about all the changes. Never loved it more. Never looked forward to a season more. College football playoff I thought was great. Last year, Indiana disappointed me. SMU was what they were, but the Ohio states and the Oregons and the Tennessee's and the Texas and Notre Dames were great. And it's only going to get better.
