Yes. And he took my word. Serious. And it's like a holiday. We have lots to talk about. No more facial hair policies. Well, explain. For the New York Yankees, we're gonna talk hockey today. What in the hell? Usually I say hockey, schmocky, not today. Plus, there's some stories about being starstruck. We got weekend hobnobbin, things you need to watch over the weekend. By the way, poses a very interesting question. What happens when you start to become friendly with guys that are not on the team you root for.

[Rich Davis]

I think there's a real simple answer to that, to be honest. Yeah, so Dallas Goner, super bowl champion of the Philadelphia Eagles. We had to do an event with him yesterday and he's such a great dude, nice guy, real down to earth, super pumped about his win. Makes you pump for him. The answer is simple. I think you start to like players, but still root for your team. I think that's okay. You could still root for your team. Rich is a lifelong 49ers fan, but you root for that player as a man, as an individual. It's like when your favorite player leaves the team, you don't abandon your favorite player. You still root for him a little bit, keep your eye on him, but you, you keep your Allian and your allegiance to the team you root for. So it's really that, like getting to know him. We've had him on our show a few times. We're going to get him on again. We spent the whole day with him yesterday. We met his girlfriend, right. Talked about life and the victory and what it's like to be in the locker room. You get to know the guy and you realize he's a down to earth, strapping young fella. You just get to root for him and appreciate him and you keep your eye on him.

As simple as that. Do you know what? Simple. Move on. But I think back to when I was a little boy and as a Niners fan, when Montana left for the Chiefs, I didn't become a Chiefs fan, but there was a part of me that's like, unless they play the Niners, I'm certainly going to hope Cool Joe does well.

Exactly. Yeah, it's like that. So now we're rooting for him and he'll be on the show more and more often again. Covino and Rich. Let me tell you, it's, it's very interesting because I feel like of all the shows on Fox Sports Radio. And I'm not patting ourselves on the back because it's such a stupid story, but I feel like we were the league leaders in joking about the Yankees lame ass facial hair policy. Like, we would often bring up young Dominican players, young Latino players, you know, around the league. Any young player for that matter who wants to clean shave in 2025, it's a lame ass look. Very few guys clean shave.

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it this morning.

[Steve Covino]

We got so many messages because again, we're the bozos that bring it up often. But let me read the press release from your dude, a guy that now runs your Los Yankees.

He's my dude. Today, Hal Steinbrenner put a statement out. My family, all my friends, so many people. I woke up, I was like, what now? Am I dreaming? It really felt like, no way. This can't be real.

[Steve Covino]

[Steve Covino]

In recent weeks, I've spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees spanning several eras to elicit their perspectives on our long standing facial hair and grooming policy. The fact this is even a memo is hilarious to me and I appreciate their earned and varied feedback. These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately, the final decision rests with me. And after great consideration as a Steinbrenner, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniform personnel to have well groomed beards. Moving forward, it is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comforts of our former policy.

[Rich Davis]

It is. And what we said when they got Devin Williams is I think change starts with one man. And I believe that he was the catalyst. And that one man, because you invest what, eight point something million dollars a year for this guy to be the closer of your team and intimidation role, really, you're closing the game. You're the closer of the New York Yankees and you have this, this really intimidating, dominating beard that gives you this sense of confidence and makes you feel like a badass. And then you're forced to shave it. Now you look like a baby cherub on the mound and pinstripes like you took away that intimidation factor. And Devin Williams is very outspoken. He wasn't disrespectful, but he was very outspoken. The fact that he hadn't shaved in years and that he felt very comfortable with his beard and more confident with his beard. So essentially you're Telling them to shave, taking away their confidence. That then becomes a counterproductive thing. And, you know, we mentioned our time with Dallas Goddard yesterday, Philadelphia Eagle, coincidentally, I said to him, just in random conversation, I said, hey, Dallas, he had a regular scruff going on, right? A regular 20, 25 scruff with some facial hair. Like, if the Eagles had a policy and they said you had a shave, how would you feel about it? How would the guys react? He's like, oh, man, that would. That would be terrible. He's like, nah, you would find, eventually you'd find somewhere else to play, because that's just, you know, you got to think about the off season and just out and about and just how you feel about yourself. He's like, the young guys today, no way, man. I don't like that. That was his take on it. You hear how young people's. Young people talk about, you know, how they want to look when they're out there. It's about time. And again, I'm a Yankees fan, so I believe in tradition. But as we've said many times, sometimes tradition is making the same mistake over and over again. And how Steinbrenner said it, right now is the time. It's the perfect time. And the rule is, well groomed beards, meaning you can't show up to work because it's work. You know, you got to show up like a professional. You can't show up to work looking like Hobo Williams. You can't look like a hobo.

Can't look like a member of the 04 Red Sox.

[Rich Davis]

Exactly. Which I always thought was a crappy look.

[Steve Covino]

But work, let me tell you, it's. It's interesting. And I think 2025 is the right timing. You know, forget it's a Yankees.

It is. It's a timing thing.

A lot of these young players have more deals than ever with brands on social media. Tick Tock, Instagram X, they're doing. They're pimping more products than ever before. It's a different time. And I. I think it was the right move by Steinbrenner. And you and I were at breakfast getting some Taylor ham. Like you said, out here in New.

[Rich Davis]

Jersey, it's not pork roll that that argument needs to end.

[Steve Covino]

Now, I know people in Texas or LA or Chicago, bigger cities around the country are like, who cares about the Yankees facial hair? It's an ongoing joke that these dudes had a look like they were showing up in an accounting office shaving every day. But to the point now where you look back and say how many Yankees would have looked different. And now are we guaranteed to get a bearded Aaron Judge without this year?

[Rich Davis]

Without a doubt. Because in the off season, yeah, that's how most of these young dudes are rocking it. In fact, if you look at us right now, we got a well groomed scruff going on. It's just the way of the world. You're going to force these young dudes to rock a cornball mustache like your dad had. Get out of here.

[Steve Covino]

I mean, not, not to backtrack a week, but last Friday we filled in for Colin and big sexy Ryan and Danny G. I believe I asked both of you. This came up literally a week ago because I said, yo, guys, when was the last time you shaved your face? And you guys said, years and years. Am I right? You are correct, sir.

[Dallas Goddard]

Yeah. For me, Danny G, it's been since high school my senior year.

[Steve Covino]

Yeah. So when you hear this policy, it is funny how we probably have talked about this stupid policy more than any other show so we could put it to rest. But it was crazy to wake up this morning and your phone is lit up like, oh my God, I hope nothing bad happened. But we are synonymous with this stupid story. So I'm glad we got to fill in for Colin today.

[Rich Davis]

But it is a bigger deal because so many people laughed at the Yankees because of that. If you're not a Yankees fan, you still looked at it like, yo, man, that's the most outdated policy possible. You and your stupid Yankee rules are so dumb. You know, if I was a young player, I wouldn't want to play there. And as a result, I think it became an uncool place to play. Like, what? Clean shaven in today's world? Like, I'd rather play for another team. Other teams are willing to pay you nowadays. So yeah, if there's another team willing to pay you and, and they're a contender and they're going to let you grow your facial hair and be who you want to be and be as flashy as you want to be and you can be comfortable in your own skin. You know, why wouldn't you choose that team? Yankees were going to lose talent as a result of this stupid rule that they held onto. And, and I say stupid from today's standard. Yeah, I, I understood it years ago. Like, hey, you show up to work as a professional, I get it. So I do like the compromise and I hate to be that guy. There's so many sports guys especially that were, like, I've been saying it, I've Always told you I was the guy.

[Steve Covino]

I don't want to be that guy.

[Rich Davis]

I don't want to be that guy. But I, I did say that it starts with one man. That man would be Devin Williams. And that it should be a compromise. And that's exactly what you got. They're allowed to have a well groomed beard. So they're not coming in looking like, like, yeah, like Kevin Millar, Johnny Damon or Old Man Winter. Right. You gotta have a well groomed beard. And I think it's a big, big move moving forward. I bet you it's a celebration in the locker room. And then it poses a lot of questions.

It's a little victory, right? No. No one looking like Justin Turner. But look at this. In Vegas, the Yankees over under went from 92 to 94 wins. Look at that. People are predicting the beards. Give him two more wins. Yeah. But interestingly enough, are we going to see every single Yankee rocking some type of stubble or facial hair? That's the Giancarlo.

Yes. I think you're going to see.

Think of Garrett Cole when he was an Astro, not a Yankee. Garrett Cole had long hair and a beard.

[Rich Davis]

Garrett Cole here, I'm already starting up.

Starting to grow facial hair again.

Garrett Cole, I guarantee that goober. Aaron Judge taking it back to my Houston roots.

A little bit of a mullet too. I'm not sure.

Aaron Judge definitely going to be having a beard on opening day. And it was Verdugo, former Yankee, who's a free agent still, I believe, said, yeah, I just want to go play for a team where I could wear my jewelry, grow my beard and be me. So maybe there was a catalyst there too, where they're like, listen, he didn't work out for us. But you know when companies you work for, when you leave or they fire you or you quit, they're like, can you take an exit survey? And you're like, yeah, no, thanks. But they want you to take an exit survey on the way out. Like, what did you like about our company?

[Rich Davis]

What didn't you.

[Steve Covino]

They got a public exit survey from Verdugo and his exit survey was, I played for the franchise with the most history in Major League Baseball and I hated it.

[Rich Davis]

Well, any place that you work, take it to a real life situation for everybody listening, where they won't let you be you and you can't do you. There's a lot of places that hire you, right, because they like you. Then when you get there, they change you to do it their way. So now you're out of your comfort zone and you can't be 100% your best. In a weird way that matters and translates into baseball. You're probably thinking, big deal, it's facial hair. You know, imagine if they forced you to wear a stupid haircut or a certain type of facial hair at your profession. Again, I think it would take you out of your game. You would feel weird about it. Like, this isn't me.

[Steve Covino]

I mean, we don't need to harp on this. Like Bryce Harper, who by the way, would look weird without facial hair.

[Rich Davis]

Exactly.

[Steve Covino]

I don't want to harp on this, but Danny G. Just one quick more question for the room. I've never seen you not wear a hat. What if Fox Sports was like, oh, yes, Daniel, Danny, we, we. You can't wear a hat anymore. That would aggravate you.

[Dallas Goddard]

I have some stylish do rags at home.

[Steve Covino]

No, no, do rags as well. Danny. You just have to show your head.

[Rich Davis]

You know, we call them don't rags here at the office. Respectfully.

Then I would shave my dome and get a tattoo on the top of my bald head.

[Steve Covino]

Ryan, let me ask you. Big sexy Ryan. So you got a cool ass, like, you know, grizzly beard. Imagine like Ryan, you, J. Ryan would go from looking like James Harden to James soften.

[Rich Davis]

Yeah, he would. And it's a confidence killer.

[Steve Covino]

It is the confidence killer. You look cool with your beard. And I know some guys like, really, who cares about a beard? I bet you confidence and how good you feel about yourself comes with your appearance and it's on your face. So there's a lot of guys that are like, yeah, I would look like a baby little boy, clean shaven. So think about that.

[Rich Davis]

Think about that. And also think about this. There will be people that still show up clean shaven. And that's going to be interesting because you're like, that's the guy who.

[Steve Covino]

No, that's the guy who was okay with it.

[Rich Davis]

And then when you read what Hal Steinbrenner said, he said he got. Got varied opinions. So there were people that were like, no, I think we should stick with the tradition, Hal. Right? There were people that were probably on the side of keeping things the way they were. And hold it, you know, George would be rolling over in his grave right now if you. I think George would be happy about this. You know, who's have to evolve, as we say all the time. And we quote our pal Gary Vaynerchuk, innovate or die. And it was becoming a very, very dated rule. It made A team that I root for feel a little corny after a while and I think it is a bigger day than people realize.

[Steve Covino]

You know, I'm just, I'm looking at some of our feedback. Our boss hit us up with a link. Someone has already done images of Yankees with different hairstyles and beards.

[Rich Davis]

That's another thing, Rich. Like how do you think the people feel? Like, who had to live by these policies like a Glaber Torres, right, Who his whole career with the Yankees had to show up like a little baby boy. And now, you know, he's a tiger, he's already got the facial hair going on, but he's like, oh, so now they lift it. You know, it's like he just missed the cuddle.

[Steve Covino]

Think of any social issue right, where, where you grew up and they didn't allow something and now they do. Like for all we know, Dom Mattingly and Rod and Guidry are really pissed.

[Rich Davis]

Like, yeah, they're like Louisiana.

[Steve Covino]

Lightning's like, I could have had a.

[Rich Davis]

Beard exactly like all the players from yesteryear. But look, if you're a non Yankees fan, I get it, you don't care that much. But this is a big deal. Change is a good thing. And for the first time, you're gonna see Yankees showing up, you know, with a well groomed beard, not just a goofy mustache. Your thoughts? That's our take on it. And again, I hate to be the show that said we told you, but we did say a compromise was inevitable. Inevitable and coming soon. And today was the day.

It's an international game. You expect these young Latino players, these Dominican superstars to want to go and play for a team like the Yankees and shave something that sort of identifies them.

No.

You know what I mean? Like it sounds silly, but it's not. That's how they look. That's how they feel confident.

Especially now in 2025 when this younger generation is all about being an individual and I want to be me. And like there's conformity is, you know, not a thing people are down with anymore at all. So it's the right move. Congrats to the Yankees. I'm a mess fan. But.

[Rich Davis]

But you know what? It also shows you not only the pressure that the players and the young people were putting on the Yankees and they were feeling the heat from social media and the banter and our show, of course, we've been talking about it for a long time.

Like I said. And you're meeting with Hal. This my meeting with Hal.

You know, I was like, I was pounding my fist like listen, Hal, I'm serious about this.

Flew into New Jersey for this.

Look, as a vato local here, I'm telling you, we don't want to completely shave is 20, 25. I think the Yankees are also making a statement and I think we're the first to probably say it. They're feeling the heat. Feel the heat. And they know they have to compete and they're thinking, look, we have to be the place to be.

And there's no reason for anyone to want to turn away from this place.

And I believe Dan Buyer put it in that, in that perspective when we were talking about Aaron Rodgers leaving the jets. Like, hey, are the jets going to keep Aaron Rodgers? You think? No. Because if you really want to change the culture sometimes you got to get rid of that. You got to get rid of that guy.

Yeah, if they cut him. But they also get $17 million in cap space back, and if he's at the end, it might make football sense, but doesn't make sense to the fans, to all the Swifties. And you might say that's ridiculous, but as the owner's daughter said, hundreds of millions of dollars you could tie back to the Taylor Swift, Travis Kelsey, Chief Kingdom.

Yeah. Whether you want to believe that or.

Not, now, I said I have an example that is maybe 1/10 of this, but it really is like, I think a fail of all fails. And I get it. You want to. You want to field the best team in any sport. You could say, look at the Lakers did. For Bronnie, it was, you know, it's more of a show than legitimate. He's a good young player, but he should not be NBA ready yet.

But you know what?

Sold tickets, got headlines. But my example is not Bronny. It's not Kelsey and Swift. I'm a New York Mets fan. Last year, the rally cry of the Mets, Ryan hit it. A Latino emerging artist known as Candelita. He did a pit bull remix. They had concerts at Citi Field. Merchandise was sold. If you watch any compilation of Mets highlights from last year, you can't go through three seconds without seeing a fan holding up an OMG sign.

[Rich Davis]

Hello, it's Juan Soto. I want to say I like very, very much. If Iglesias stay on the team, I feel like I like him very, very much and it means a lot to me. Juan Soto, if he stay on the team.

[Steve Covino]

Omg.

Omg. Juan Soto. And great job Covino. I love that guy and I like him very, very much.

So Jose Iglesias.

No. But you don't think he adds to that Latin flavor that. Honestly, between you and me, bro, and the millions that are listening right now, I think part of that is what pulled Soto to your Mets. They had that Latino flair. They had a fun vibe. They had Francisco Lindor. They had a bunch of young Latin players that had a lot of fun. They were able to grow facial hair.

So this, this omg Mets rally cry has not been signed. They. And I'm not saying. I'm not comparing Jose Glaciers to Juan Soto.

Soto was a big Candleita fan, bro.

Pete Alonzo, Manaya. I'm not comparing him to any of the Mets offseason signings, but when you are going to spend $765 million on Juan Soto and a guy like Jose Iglesias probably is like a $5 million utility guy. I'm not saying throw away five mil.

But please reemphasize, though, you're not comparing him to Travis Kelsey.

[Steve Covino]

No, I'm not. I'm just. I'm talking about.

But as far as, like, he's the part of the fabric of the team, you want to keep him around. That's what you're getting. When.

When there's a. When there's a guy, a fan favorite, a rally cry, someone that means something to the team. And especially when it's not. When it's not big spending like Jose Iglesias isn't saying I want double digits a year. I bet you Jose Iglesias would take a one year small deal.

Well, don't you think Kelsey, honestly should be willing to take a pay cut for, you know, one more goodbye year and one more year of putting it out there and see if they. They could run it back and make some moves just to get back on track again.

[Steve Covino]

Telling a grown man to take a pay cut. It sounds easier when you say it. Like, the reality is, like, why should I take a pay cut? I'm a future hall of Famer as a chief. I'm just saying I think there's some.

Some pride in that.

Your thoughts at 877 for the herd. I want to hear the player that upset you the most when your team cut ties, Whether they released them, cut them, traded them. The one that hurt the fan base where it's like, yo, for real, you got rid of Blank. When I was a kid, as a Mets fan, I'll give you one more match because it's what I could speak of, because that's my fandom. Two of them. I mentioned it before. When Montana left the Niners, I was like, really? I like Steve Young, but, oh, and when the Mets said, yeah, you know what? We're gonna let Gary Carter move on. The late, great Gary Carter. I know he was past his prime, but, God, it's Gary Carter. Like, he was the face.

He won with you guys. He won.

And he was just, you know, just the smiley catcher.

So that as he's a leader of the team.

Yeah. One of the most likable players in sports and especially in New York at the time, because he won with the Mets.

Danny, let me ask you, being an LA guy, when Piazza came to us, I know he was in the. At the Marlins for, like, a cup of coffee in between, but did Piazza leaving hurt you guys or you not care?

No, it did.

I. I remember the girl I was dating at the time had, like, tears welling up in her eyes.

I was very upset because you don't want. First of all, you don't want to see your childhood hero like Marcus Allen move to a different team, but then let alone it being the Chiefs. Right?

Anywhere but Kansas City, Please, if you are a Raider. And then more recently, when Jon Gruden returned to Oakland and Mark Davis got his dream to get his coach back, what's the first big move? He traded Khalil Mack. And there were Oakland Raider fans at the time who quit. They wrote memos about how their fandom was done. They, they can't believe this. Khalil Mack was the guy we all were rocking his jersey there at the Coliseum. And that, that was a big one. There's still Raider fans who have not gotten over that.

What hurts the most? It usually hurts the most when you're a little kid because that's your first realization of, like, what, wow, my favorite guy is gone. How do they do like, as a kid? It's like baffling. Like you, you're almost. Your heart is hurting.

Why, why would they do, you know, for my brother, my favorite player for my brother. That was Mookie Wilson when he got traded to the Blue Jays. Everyone has their example. Our buddy Bo back at Fox.

There's other guys looking for home. Devonte Adams, who knows where Debo ends up. So it's not like the Rams are calling it a day. They were one play away, as Matthew Stafford's wife pointed out. Yeah, they were one play away from.

The Cooper cup like you said and but Puka's a. That's his chance to pick up some great leadership and really step up as a player.

But I wanted to give another layer to it when we talked about what Aaron Rodgers was looking for. And he said a to be wanted, which, as we pointed out, it's a no brainer. But in a relationship, at a job anywhere, you don't want to feel like someone's doing you a charity work. You want to genuinely feel like the, the woman you're with desires you. The job you're at, values your work, you know, your family members appreciate what you give back to the family. Like, no one wants to be taken for granted. So I like that. I like how he wants to be surrounded by winners because who wants to be. Who wants to end their career with a bunch of losers? No one.

But the third point was an interesting one. And I wouldn't mind the warm weather and this, this hit.

However, the last couple days we were in Philadelphia doing that event with the Eagles and Dallas Goddard, and now we're in New Jersey and I'm looking out Covino's family's house's window right now. There's like snow on the ground. And Aaron Rodgers and I, we're around the same age. You hit 40, I don't care what you say. I get when people say, I like the seasons. Of course, you like a little fall, changing of the leaves. You like, oh, spring, oh, baseball's here, make it clear.

We live in LA now, here visiting. I barely miss my family, let alone the seasons. I miss pizza more than I miss the season.

Listen, I always tell people when you know, because it's a common question, Rich, you live in la, you're from New York, what do you miss? And I say, listen, I'll be honest. I missed my family and food. New York has better food. And I miss the vibe of the people, east coast people. I like their honesty, I like their how they act.

You and Rogers may be around the same age, but you're not in the same income bracket.

So whatever hassles and hops he has to deal with when it comes to cold weather and snow, you think he's out there shoveling it.

No, no, I'm not saying that. I'm just saying in general, when I stepped off that plane in Philadelphia.

I was like, damn. I was like, why is it going to be so cold?

And it made me realize, like, I'm not saying I'm a senior Citizen in New York that retires to. Hey, I'm going to move to Florida to retire and die. Which is what all New Yorkers do. Oh, you go to Florida. Oh, to retire for 20 years and then die. That's what most East Coasters do. That should be their state slogan. Florida, where New Yorkers go to die.

I'm not saying I'm a 60, 70 year old guy, but even when you hit like 40, I. I've noticed that when I go back to the east coast, call me soft, call me a wimp, but I got like to your.
