Here we go on a Friday. Things are percolating live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. Former Bears coach Dave Wanstadt stops by head down. We'll lift his spirits blazing. Five in one hour. We got a college pick. J Mac I'm glad we have football on Thursday nights. It gives me something to do. But I'm not sure the Wham Documentary on Netflix wouldn't have been more interesting than tuning into the Bears Seahawks. But I did think there was a winner last night beyond the Seahawks.
J. Mac
A winner last night beyond the Seahawks.
Doug Gottlieb
Who would it be? I want you to think about that.
J. Mac
Not the fans, that's for sure.
Doug Gottlieb
No, it wasn't the fans. It wasn't the Bears. The winners beyond the Seahawks? Detroit offensive coordinator Ben Johnson. According to Adam Schefter, he is now in play and wants the job. I mean, here's what it's been reduced to. I felt bad for Caleb Williams. I felt sorry for him. So job number one in Chicago is Make Caleb Williams work and you see the talent. I'm not sure if you knew this, he has four 300 yard passing games. That's more than Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes. But he's been sacked 67 times this year. Seven times last night. To give you some perspective, Bo Nix has been sacked only 22 times. Rookie Drake may 29. He's over double that and he's got a game left. By the way, the last time a quarterback got sacked this much it was 2005. David Carr, Derek's older brother. Many people have speculated that it ruined his career. He was never the same quarterback. I hope it's not too late for this kid. Pff. Has the Bears offensive line ranked 29th and oh, by the way, it is the second least paid offensive line for a perpetually cheap franchise. It's a bad old line. I mean, we say that Jim Harbaugh goes to the Chargers, first thing he says is we don't need receivers. Get me the best tackle in the draft to protect Justin Herbert. I'm telling you, they had a great touchdown pass last night. He really did. He had a great touchdown pass. But a backup offensive lineman got called for holding and that negated the touchdown. Maybe a clever young offensive coordinator is the answer, but you got to save this kid. There's almost no motion in the offense at all. They don't throw the ball downfield. It's remedial coaching. And you know he likes to throw it downfield because you watch them at USC and it's possible to turn it around with the right offensive coach. Sam Darnold, did you ever think he would be in the MVP running? Bryce Young today looks better than than CJ Stroud. That would have seemed outrageous a year ago. He got the right offensive coach. And by the way, Baker Mayfield's got an offensive coordinator that's going to get head coaching opportunities. You can turn this puppy around. You don't even need a head coach. If you get the right coordinator, you can see magic. But I mean, you start looking at Darnold, you look at Baker, you look at Bryce Young. I don't think you can allow a 10 game losing streak to define this kid. But this is something I reported. Got a lot of pushback before he was drafted. That privately and quietly. He didn't want to make a scene. But he and his camp had reservations about the Chicago franchise and all of them are on display. He's on his second play caller. They won't pay their offensive line. I mean, it's. I. You're watching it. I'm watching it. Seattle gave them multiple opportunities. It was dink and dunk down the field. And that's not who he is. And he's not a loser as well. This game was there for the taking, but they just don't have the infrastructure. And again, I love that Darnold and Baker and Bryce Young are having a resurgence because it proves how valuable coaching is. In baseball, a lot of it's the payroll and in the NBA, a lot of it's just. You have two stars in the NFL. Coaching matters a lot, but every time he goes out, he doesn't throw anybody under the bus. There's a quarterback in New York who does that often. That's not what he does. He always says the right thing, and he did again last night.
Dave Wanstadt
I was frustrated, still frustrated. I'm gonna probably be frustrated until tomorrow.
Doug Gottlieb
Know, after I get a, you know.
Dave Wanstadt
Get a chance to watch it and things like that. So, yeah, I mean, I didn't play well enough.
Doug Gottlieb
I didn't. I didn't do.
Dave Wanstadt
I didn't help put the team in a good position to win, a better position to win. And, you know, that's what it is.
Doug Gottlieb
He has yet to throw a teammate, a coach, the organization under the bus. Not one time. Could have 10 game losing streak, could have. So tip of the cap to Caleb and the Chicago fans who are bearing witness to an organization that is lost at sea. So there's a story I saw this morning, and I've said through the years, I think Mike McCarthy's a good coach. Don't put him in Andy Reid's category or Sean McVeigh, but I think he's a good coach. But I do think sometimes people get a reputation and it's unwarranted. And so there's a story this morning that Mike McCarthy has saved his job. And I know people freak out about that, but sometimes in life I've been taught this. You have to flip the telescope.
Eric Mangini
You.
Doug Gottlieb
You have to look at a situation and just say, I'm going to look at it the opposite way. And so let's really look at what he's done in his career, because I think Mike is a top 10 coach. Maybe closer to 10 than one, but he's a top 10 coach. So he takes over. An old, rigid, stubborn Aaron. Brett Favre. Old, rigid, stubborn Brett Favre. 37, didn't want to change his ways. Got him in his last year in Green Bay. 13, 3 NFC championship. Favre leaves. There's this raw, talented kid, Aaron Rodgers from California, who's been poking Favre in the ribs forever. We know now that Aaron don't. We can be a little difficult, prickly. Sometimes it feels like he's almost working behind the scenes against you. And he wins the super bowl with Aaron and then he gets fired and then he goes to Dallas and with, I think it's fair to say the most overpaid quarterback in the league. 3 straight, 12 win seasons and makes him an MVP runner up. Look at the quarterbacks in this league who really think Dak should be an MVP runner up. Two separate times, Dak gets hurt and they go to Cooper Rush, who both times gets on a heater. Cooper Rush. I'll say this slowly because it's hard to comprehend is 9 and 4 as a starter in the NFL in front of a rebuilding O line with no run game. Since he took over in Dallas, I'm not sure you're aware of this. The only offense that is better is Josh Allen and the Bills. Since he took over Dallas, they've had. They have had 16 times. They have scored 40 or more points. Mahomes and Andy Reid have done it eight times in that time. Spanish. Think about that. And remember when I had Greg Cosell on earlier this week and this is not a talented offense outside of CD Lamb, remember what he said about Dallas coaching? I think their coaching staff is doing a great job because what you see a lot with them is you see a ton of different personnel packages, a ton of different formation looks, a lot of shifts in motions. They're giving a defense a lot to have to deal with. Rush was phenomenal on third down. He was phenomenal against their pressures and the Bucs pressure a lot. Now he's a guy that you need to get pressure on and the pressure must be effective, which it was not by the Bucs because he tends to fall away from throws. But one thing about him, he's been very decisive the more he plays. Yeah, that sounds like good coaching. I watched Justin Herbert get flummoxed by the Tampa defense. And then I watched Cooper Rush excel against the Tampa defense. That sounds like good coaching. Farve NFC Championship Rogers, Super Bowl, Dak, 12 wins, Cooper Rush heater. But I think a lot of this goes back to. He has coached two of the highest profile franchises in America, the Green Bay packers and the Dallas Cowboys. And when you lose or get fired at one of those, it stamps you. It's a smell you can't get off you. But don't we now realize, and we probably didn't then, that Aaron's difficult? Aaron and Matt LaFleur were never that close. Feels like Jordan Love and LaFleur are closer. And Aaron and Robert Sala, they were buddies too. This is not a shot at Aaron, but when you flip the telescope and you have perspective and you kind of look at Aaron, how he's aged in personal relationships and Mike McCarthy, maybe you don't feel the same way about Mike McCarthy that you did like seven to eight years ago. So it's interesting when I read this story, I think, oh, they're bringing Mike McCarthy back. Greg Cosell is like, yeah, it's a really well coached team. Cooper Rush is really decisive. He's great on third down. Do you think he's great on third down? Because he's great. Or maybe it's coaching. You know, you watched the Bears last night. You see what bad coaching looks like. Cooper Rush beats Tampa. That's what good coaching looks like. So that's where we stand today. J. Mack. We got a lot of stuff today.
Lavar Arrington
You know, it's a Friday.
Doug Gottlieb
And I'm thinking last night, generally, in. In my life, I feel like I got the greatest job in the world because I get to watch sports. It doesn't feel like work. Last night felt like work. I probably would have been watching an Amazon or a Netflix documentary if, you know, if I had a choice. But I will say there's a lot that came out of that game and not just for Chicago.
J. Mac
Was it more than the rain? Was it Seattle just playing? Hey, hey, Geno Smith, we can't risk you throwing the ball. I mean, he had one red zone pass. Did you see that early? It was right to a Bears player.
Doug Gottlieb
And they just stopped throwing the ball down the field at all. No. You could tell the Seattle staff is like, okay, weren't you could tell Seattle's game plan was, we're a better team. Let's just get out of here. With a win. Once Gino almost threw a red zone pick. I mean, they just simplified underneath dink and dunk.
J. Mac
You can, if you were watching Metcalf and Jackson Smith, Najigba they were unhappy with. It's like, what is this? What are we doing?
Doug Gottlieb
Okay, so smart people make mistakes, and I'm gonna give you example of that. Coming up, blazing five, top of the hour. Your pick. So you've been on a heater all year. Hey, this is Lavar Arrington here from up on Game. And listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now something that should be personal to you as well. In our country, the hate is at an all time high and it's like we're going backward. The hate is winning. We can't allow that, all right? It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate. And it's enough. It's time for it to stop. We need to stop, regroup, change the momentum as a team, because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team. So let's act like it. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a timeout against hate. Let's think about what we say and do. And when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out. I'ma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit stand uptoallhate.org to help and join me in calling for a timeout against hate by following at what's up with Hate? Or posting the blue square emoji.

Congratulations to CBS Sports and Sony Electronics for their first place wins for innovation in industry at this year's unconventional awards by T Mobile for Business. In a collaboration that was clearly built on breaking new ground, CBS and Sony created a first of its kind broadcast for the PGA Championship. Using a custom built T Mobile Private 5G network to power the live production, they deployed a 5G wireless camera system throughout the event. The network speed combined with Sony's innovative ultra low latency video codec allowed for seamless, high quality footage without disruption. With that innovative approach, CBS gave broadcasters the tools they need to do what they do best. Take their coverage to entirely new places. These innovations will shape the way live sports are covered moving forward. And for that, T Mobile congratulates Sony and CBS for their unconventional thinking.

We've all got a thing, an obsession. For some of us, it's vintage fashion, our cars, anything we can collect. There's a place where they all live under one roof. EBay. Where closets get filled with statement pieces and vintage finds. Where designer handbags are the real deal and all your favorite dead stock sneakers wait for you. Maybe you live for uncovering rare trading cards. A quick search on ebay is like opening a door to stacks of them. And if it's your car that fuels you most, ebay is a stocked garage filled with any part you need for any DIY job. The best part is on ebay it doesn't matter what you're into. You know, there's a story Nick Sirianni is the coach of the Philadelphia Eagles. When he got the job, he wasn't ready for it. He's kind of been. He wins a lot of games. But a lot of this is, I think Philadelphia's superstar general manager, Howie Roseman. Jalen Hurts is very good. They've drafted extraordinarily well. They've hit on a lot of great players, a lot of Georgia Bulldogs. But there's another story now that last week after losing to Washington, former Eagles Zach Ertz. There's a little bit of video that, you know, he and Nick Ceriani, it's in the background. You can't see much. There's a report here. It got a little bit heated. And I mean, listen, I feel this way about Philadelphia. There they are, right there is. If you know the name of a team security guard, it's probably a problem. And the Zach Ertz story, I mean, ask yourself, what do these things have in common? Nick Ceriani trading insults with fans, road fans and Philadelphia fans. Nick Ceriani had to be held back by an assistant coach on his staff. That is incredible. That's not even a coordinator. It's a position coach getting in his face. There's Nick Ceriani at the super bowl, was gonna put his hand up and make some gesture. And Jalen Hurts had to manage his coach. I mean, what do these all have in common? Oh, wait, it's Nick Ceriani. And so at some point, this is a proud organization. And remember, Philadelphia is a highly emotional city to begin with. So, you know, having a highly emotional coach is not great. You know, Andy Reid, and I'm not saying coaches and players don't have their issues. I mean, Andy Reid got hip checked by Travis Kelce in the super bowl, but he totally defused the situation. He got Travis Kelce, right. Travis went on to have a great game. So that wasn't even part of the story. We don't even talk about it. Like it was just a moment.
Lavar Arrington
It was diffused.
Doug Gottlieb
And that's what a coach is for. And I can hear a lot of Philly fans, hey, it's kind of funny. Coaches aren't stand up comedians. Whenever I hear that, well, it's kind of funny. I don't want my quarterback to be funny. I don't want my head coach to be funny. It's okay if a wide receiver, you know, occasionally has a sense of humor and is funny. I don't want my coach to be that or my GM to Be that I, I. That Dave Chappelle is paid to be funny. And he is. You know that. That's funny. I don't want my coach to be. So here's my hottest take on this. This is my hot take. That if Philadelphia loses in the first round or the second round, Bill Belichick can get out of his contract in July. This July. That's my hot take. And Belichick already got his kid at Carolina to be the D.C. why did Carolina allow Belichick to have that? Because Belichick knows there's two jobs that are fascinating, Philly and Buffalo. If Sean McDermott gets bounced early, that job will be looking for a coach. If Nick Sirianni gets bounced early, you think it's a hot take. Kevin Durant went from his rival to the Golden State Warriors. I thought the chances of that happening were zero. Stuff happens. Now Zach Ertz, the former Eagle, is downplaying the Washington story and incident. Nick and I had a great relationship when I was there. We still have a great relationship. And I think it's a definitely been blown away out of proportion.
J. Mac
We spoke, we're good.
Doug Gottlieb
There's no ill feelings on my part, and I don't think there's any ill feelings on his part. It's just something in the heat of the moment probably got blown out of proportion.
Rich Davis
It may be misunderstanding, but at the.
Doug Gottlieb
End of the day, him and I are fine. Everyone knows how I feel about that place in that building, but at the same time, I love being here. All right, I'm just saying. Jeffrey Lurie, Howie Roseman ownership general manager, they've moved off. Chip Kelly had a winning record. Doug Peterson won a Super Bowl. Andy Reid was a legend. They moved off really good coaches. So you know anybody that's watching this show that runs a business, I have a small business. If you run a business, you know, you're constantly perpetually tweaking and it's kind of the fun of business. And so when I see problems, remember the NFL had a catch problem a few years ago. Like the catch rule was confusing. What's a catch? What's not a catch? And Roger Goodell came on this show and I said, and I said, respectfully, sir, I can't tell what's a catch. And he acknowledged it's a problem and they fixed it. I mean, it was like a decade long issue. Is that a catch? DEZ Bryant, Packers. That's a catch. No, it's not. It like changed outcomes. And so Major League Baseball had a 10 year, 15 year issue. Ratings going down in attendance. Rob Manfred made the purists angry pitch clock. It worked. Ratings are up, the game's faster. I watch more baseball. The NBA ratings have been in decline and now they're bragging about. Look at our ratings on Christmas. Listen, Steph and LeBron get ratings. And the NFL games were in the afternoon, not the night, so they went unopposed. But when I look at tweaking, what does the NBA have that is really, really good? They got three or four things playing to their advantage. Number one, for the first time, I can remember the three most iconic northeast basketball franchises. Knicks, Sixers, Celtics, all excellent. That's something that's like having, you know, the Red Sox, Yankees and Braves being great in the eastern time zone. It matters. Those are iconic franchises. So the Sixers have stars, they're good. The Knicks are fun to watch and the Celtics are great. And remember, 80% of this country's population is like Denver East. It matters. Those are big media markets. So that's it's got its going for it. The other thing it's got going for it. Steph and LeBron are still remarkable players, highly productive. The other thing it's got going for it is these international players are unbelievable. Now they don't want to be faces of the league, but the skill level in this league has never been Greater. Wemby is 7 foot 4. He's crossing guys up on the dribble and hitting threes. Saint Jokic is the best passer on the Nuggets. He's a seven footer. So the skill level, the assets are fantastic. The players don't get in trouble. I hate the load management crap, but they don't get in trouble. You know, NBA guys, they like to, you know, they like to score points, they like to hang out, they do their social media. They're not getting in trouble. Some of them are different personalities, like KD. But KD's still great. LeBron's still really good. Steph's good. The Sixers, the Knicks and the Celtics are excellent. And the skill level is through the roof. I just think it has to. I think there's a couple of things here. A couple of things long term may not be fixable. I don't like AAU basketball. I think the international European system is much better. The players come out with more skill. They come out more focused and mature and they play fewer games. AU basketball is a money grab. It's gross. Players come out, they've been coddled. They play too many games. They don't care about competition. I think AAU basketball. Steve Kerr talked about this. It's not good. Our system needs to be tweaked. I'm not sure if you can, but the things you can tweak too many three pointers, make it a deeper shot, have the three pointer go into the bench. I like three pointers. It needs to be part of the game, not 90 a night. The other thing that we have to be honest about is David Stern, the late commissioner, the late great David Stern used to tell people this privately all the time. And Adam Silver would tell you privately, when you compete against football, college or pro, you're not going to get big ratings. The NBA has always lived off its playoffs. You weren't watching unless you lived in Chicago. You weren't watching Toronto play the Bulls in the regular season either. You weren't. The iconic moments are against the Cavs in the playoffs and the Knicks in the playoffs and the Utah Jazz and Charles Barkley and the Sonics. That's the iconic moment. So regular season ratings, when you're going up against the beast known as the NFL and the increasing popularity of the 12 team college football Playoff, you're not going to get ratings then. I mean teams don't even have their defensive rotations and their rosters set in December and early January. It's always been a trading deadline on league. Nobody's beaten the NFL. In fact, here's a this is true. Netflix even realizes that they lose a big chunk of their viewers during football season. So they don't debut their best stuff in the football season. Ask yourself, when do you watch Netflix the most? When football season ends from about February 15th until Labor Day. That's when people are watching their Netflix. So even the streaming services understand what football does. It craters everything else not called NFL football. That's just the reality. That's why the NBA had good Christmas ratings. A LeBron, Steph B. Philly, New York, Boston are iconic market on the Northeast. The quality was good, the games were close and the NFL didn't play at night. Chiefs, Ravens played in the day. That helps. But I think some of the problems like baseball are very solvable very quickly. The three point shot. I also, I'm a big believer in this. I would bring back the hand check. I want physicality. I like physicality. I think physicality is at the core of hockey. I think physicality is at the core of football, college and pro. And I think the NBA, it's too easy, it's too finesse. I love intense playoff basketball. Butt to the basket, guys. Get physical the more physical players are, the more intense they get. And there's kind of a passive, a passive finesse nature to three point shots. You're way out here. I shoot, I go down the other end of the floor. I want bodies colliding, I want physicality around the basket. That's why you get that in the playoffs. Sometimes you come down the floor, you need a basket, you don't need a three, you need a basket. Because the scores go down. Every basket, circumstantially is more important. So it's going to be fine. And I think, I think there's things it's got going for it. Stefan LeBron, still great. Sixers, Knicks, Celtics, outstanding. The skill level from Europe over is unbelievable. We got a domestic issue. We don't have a skill issue. Our domestic product, our domestic AU is just not good enough. All right, Blazing five, top of the hour. You know, generally Blazing five. You said something a couple weeks ago and it's stung. I left the show, I was injured, and you said, you know, you pick a lot of the big games, a lot of the TV games, and I thought about that going home and I. There used to be a time in my life that I would bet the corner TV game, I would bet the ugly game, and I've gotten away from it. Boy, do I love a stinker in Blazing five.
J. Mac
You go back to your roots. Tennessee Jags this weekend. You firing on that?
Doug Gottlieb
Hey, I got standards. That one I can't watch, but I've got a couple games that maybe not the best television game, and I'm excited for it. Blazing five, top of the hour. Eric Mangini, former Bear coach Dave Wanstadt, live in Los Angeles on a Friday. It's the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific.

We've all got a thing, an obsession. For some of us, it's vintage fashion, our cars, anything we can collect. There's a place where they all live under one roof. EBay. All right, it's hour two. It is a Friday. Live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Bring your energy, folks. This is the best time. This is the best stretch of the year. Doug, last night was a stinker. It's the best stretch of the year. Say what you want, I'm counting the days. To pitchers and catchers reporting. I'm all fired up. J. Mac's been in a heater with his picks this year. I'll acknowledge it now. My picks for divisions and playoffs has been unbelievable. You have to look at me sometimes and think, how does coward pick division winners? Because I look at you sometimes and think, how do you always get the right team?
J. Mac
Well, your logic is strong. Just take the best quarterback and that usually works out. But hey, by the way, four games in the NBA decided last night in the final 10 seconds, two mid range game winners, two three point game winners. So maybe they're listening.
Doug Gottlieb
Colin, say that again. Mid range game winners.
J. Mac
Tyler Hero, your boy. Mid range game winner. And someone else had one and then two three point game winners. Exciting night on the hardwood. I know you were watching.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay. Blazing 5. Been a rough year. What do you think? I'm going to stop doing this. Puppy. Let's go. That's a hot one. Let's blaze it up.
Ben Johnson
Fire it up.
Doug Gottlieb
It's Collins Blazin 5. Sponsored by DraftKings. Broncos at Bengals. Listen, I think it's. It's my favorite bet of the week. Broncos plus three and a half. I get Sean Payton, a great offensive coach with extra rest and I have the Bengals on a little shorter week they played a Saturday game. I like Denver. They're 70 against teams with a losing record. They lead the NFL in sack difference differential and that matters. They're second in the NFL and sacks because Burroughs offensive line protection is horrid. So I think Burrow is going to be under constant duress. I think Bo Nix will have more time to throw. And remember, the Bengals have yet to beat a legitimate number one quarterback this year. It's been Gardner Minshew and Will Levis and Dorian Thompson Robinson. The Bengals defense is bad all the way around. I think Denver take the points wins at Cincinnati 2827 Raiders and Saints I don't bet the Saints much, but I'm going to take the Saints at home plus one why Any team that gets humiliated in a standalone game usually plays with intensity, especially if they're home. They're coming off a loss. They're 33 under their interim coach and their losses have been to playoff teams. The packers and the Commanders and the Rams. Listen, the packers are beating, beating up on a lot of people. Their defense is playing well. 10 sacks last three games and the Raiders offense is anemic. Under 20 points in six straight games. They've trailed by 10 points in 14 of their last 15 games this year. So the Raiders get into these huge holes. I think the Saints will play with intensity. I'm going to take the Saints plus one to win 24 to 20. Jets said Bills I took Buffalo last week. I'm taking them again. They're seven and oh at home. They played like crud last week and still won. The jets injury report Many of their best players are hurt. The jets are falling apart. Listen, here's Buffalo. They don't give the ball up. You can't get to Josh Allen. 7 and 2 against the jets and they're taking the ball away. Meanwhile, the jets outscored in the second half against the Rams 13 nothing. One of six teams. One versus six, excuse me, against teams with a winning record. I think they're over their depth here. I'm going to take Buffalo to bounce back. I think it's a reasonable division game. It's not a blowout, but I'm going to swallow the 9 1/2 points. Lay the points 2817 Bills winning cover Falcons at commander this feels like a JMAC bet. I like the Falcons plus four. It's a primetime game of two young quarterbacks. Listen, Michael Penix the the offense is different. Eight for 14 on third down. He gets rid of the ball quickly it can move. No sacks by the Giants and the defense is actually playing well. Raheem Morris has this defense for Atlanta playing well, third in the NFL last month with 16 sacks and they're taking the ball away. The Commanders for their last five wins have come by five points or fewer. Their defense stinks. Terry McClaurin will play, but he's banged up. The Falcons defense is playing very well. A young defense and Raheem Morris has got him playing intense football. Upset, baby. Falcons 3027 upset over the Commanders. Ohio State versus Oregon. Well, I called it before the season. I said take the Ducks to beat them at Watson and take take the Buckeyes when they meet again. I'm going to take Ohio State minus two and a half. Listen, top 10 in the country in yards per play on offense and defense. Ohio State's got better players. Will Howard criticize them all you want. Second highest completion percentage in the country over 73%. 36 touchdowns. He moves okay. And nine picks. Oregon's had a long layoff. I don't necessarily love that. They could be rusty early. And Penn State dropped 37 points and almost 300 rushing yards on Oregon. I don't think you can win a natty with a bad defense. Boise State moved the ball on Oregon, Penn State, Ohio State. Ohio State's defense this season, you saw it against Tennessee. It's in a class by itself. Ohio State wins the game. I think it's going to be wildly entertaining, but I'm going to lay the points and take Ohio State 34 to 30 on DraftKings Sportsbook bet 5 bucks. Get 150 in bonus bets if your $5 bet wins, download the app. The promo code is heard. H E R D When you sign up my bets again, I'm going for a couple of ups. I think Atlanta and Michael Penix is a real thing. The rookie from Washington gets a W. I also like the Broncos and their rookie quarterback winning on the road. And I'll take. You know what? I'm going to take the Saints, the Bills in Ohio State. J Mac, any thoughts on that? Usually you have a strong Only real.
J. Mac
Disagreement is I'm on the Bengals at three, but obviously that's a different line than three and a half. But overall, hey, good stuff, man.

39 years coaching college or pro football. 6 with the Bears, 5 with the Dolphins. Last Dolphin coach to win a playoff game. He's my buddy, Dave Wanstadt. He's joining us live from Chicago right now. Well, I gotta imagine that town is unhappy. I mean, it's not losing, it's the way they lost. I don't even know. Is it a good? I mean, is it a job you'd even consider taking? Is it that bad? What are the positives there?
Ben Johnson
Well, the positive are that you're gonna have a full house every week and this is a football town. I mean, even in tough times, you know, when the Bulls were having their heyday and obviously the Blackhawks and on and on, I mean, it's a Bears town, it always will be. And they have a quarterback that's got some talent. So yes, it's a, it's a darn good job. But no, you're right. The time is just turned upside down right now. All that I do is radio and TV for him. And I was walking up the other morning at 7:00 to do a show. I didn't even had a cup of coffee yet. And the guy stopped me on the street and wanted to start cussing me out doing those damn Bears. Once that I said, buffy, relax, relax. I mean, he's got. How'd you like to work next to him all day?
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Wow. Yeah. So here's my take. Would you go with a young offensive coordinator like a Ben Johnson and just get Caleb right? Would you go with a guy that's more of a tough physical culture builder like Vrabel? Is there a, is there a perfect choice?
Ben Johnson
Well, I think here, and obviously I'm a defensive guy, so people would say I'm going to side with the defense. But in this particular case, you know, and I was coaching at the University of Pittsburgh when Mike Tomlin got hired at the Steelers and he had Bruce Aings and he had Dick LeBeau and he had Ben Roethlisberger who had won a Super Bowl. Mike can come in, be the head coach over everything and play that role with a young quarterback. You know, there's nine, there's what, five rookies starting this year? Yeah, five second year or four second. Three or four second year quarterbacks. So my point is the offensive guy, you want somebody, I think at the Bears that's an offensive minded coach that can grow with Caleb. Now when you look at these offensive coaches, I wouldn't look at a one year wonder offensive coordinator or six game wonder offensive coordinator. Look at these guys that have some history to them. Colin. Two or three years. Because let me tell you what happened to me when I was at the Bears. My third year, we go to the playoffs, win a playoff game here. The next year, my offensive coordinator leaves me, Ron Turner, he goes to University Illinois. I get another offensive coordinator. I'm at the Dolphins. Two years into it, playoffs, 12 wins, 11 wins. Chan Daly leaves me, goes to Georgia Tech, I hire North. Turner comes on two years with Norv, winning 10 games a year, north takes the Raiders job. So going on my fifth year at the Dolphins, I was on my third offensive coordinator and they all say, this is the catch. They all say, oh, no, no, we'll, we'll make the terminology and we'll keep the system the same for the quarterback. They don't, they all believe in things that they've been successful and that's what you get into. That's why an offensive guy that has experience, I think really would benefit the quarterback.
Doug Gottlieb
You know, it's, it's interesting. Interesting. As we look at the emergence of run games, Baltimore, Detroit, the Rams with Kyron Williams. You start looking at the NFL right now. Saquon Barkley, Eagles. The run game is back. And do you have a belief why? I mean, there was a two year period, nobody wanted to pay him. I'm looking around the league now. Washington, Atlanta leads their division. All the teams now. Buffalo with James Cook. The run game is back. Why, in your opinion?
Ben Johnson
Well, number one, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks immensely. Yeah, if you got a young quarterback and you can run the football, boy, does that help him. As far as being in manageable third downs, that's the opposite of what the Bears are doing. Bears are in. Chuck and I had a great conversation with Troy Aikman the other day. He was on my radio show and Troy was talking about how the Kyle Shanahan tree, the McVeighs, the, the guy at Minnesota, obviously McVeigh, all these guys that come under that tree, LaFleur, they all are under center a lot of the time and it's all timing steps and get the ball out quick escapade, he said. And Troy made the point, he says that's where obviously your best play action passes come. Who's going to fall for a play action pass from the guy in a shotgun? So I think that the guys that are running it, and I looked this morning, it's funny you bring that up. Six of the top 10 running backs in the NFL right now are all the top teams you mentioned. Obviously, you know, most of them right there. So my point is, I think that it helps the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance to convert third downs and obviously you're going to move the change, you're going to score points and it rests your defense. You know, I mean, these things, all these teams now, all of a sudden they're getting better with defense as the year goes on. Why is that? Because they're rested, they're not playing as many snaps as if they're throwing at every don.
Doug Gottlieb
Philadelphia's coach, Nick Ceriani I have multiple instances, a hand gesture at a Super bowl, arguing with a position coach. Feisty Last week with Zach Ertz yelling at fans. It's not the way you would have done it. I mean, Philly's an emotional town. He's an emotional guy. So it's working. But what do you make of it when you see this Stu?
Ben Johnson
Yeah, that turns me off. I mean, I don't believe in that stuff. I wouldn't do that stuff. But I will say this. I think the last few weeks Nick's kind of gotten a little bit quieter and he's. And they're one of the few teams they're in the top 10 in offense and defense and two other things that tells me that he's got control of his team. You know they have the second fewest penalties in the National Football League. Yeah, they're plus six in turnover margin in the NFL. In the NFL right now. So all the things that win game for you sometimes that people don't want to talk about, boy, they are doing a very good job. And they went out and they hired Vic Fangio, you know, and they got the top defense right now in the NFL. So I think, you know, I had a problem with some of the things that he did, but I think overall he's doing a very good job. He's got good people, he's letting them work. Kellen Moore is doing a great job with the offense and that's, that's the key to being a head coach.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay, so I gotta ask you, packers are going to Minnesota to play the Vikings. So you got J.J. mcCarthy. And if you let Sam Darnold go, you got a rookie contract for five years. You can go buy any weakness. Daniel Jones can be a backup or you can keep Darnold, who's red hot. What do you. If you ran the team, you're the GM of this team, even if you're the coach, what do you do with Darnold? Now you can argue, hey, everybody's going to succeed with Jordan Addison and everybody's going to succeed with Justin Jefferson and T.J. hawkinson. Is it the parts, Is it Sam? What do you do with Darnold in that situation?
Ben Johnson
Well, just, just look at Chicago. I mean, look at our receivers, right? Dunes, A DJ Moore, Kellen. Kellen, right Allen. They've got his commit at tight end. They've got as good a skill people as anybody. And it doesn't mean anything. I would keep Sam Darnold, you know, and I think you could probably get him. What did Baker sign for call in three years, around 100 million. Yeah, I think that he would, he would be. Because you don't know J.J. mcCarthy. I mean, look how many of these first round quarterbacks that miss. You know, I think J.J. is going to be a great player, but we don't know that where we see what Sam does and I don't know, I think the Vikings are going to come out of this thing and end up winning the division. I really do.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah. Host the packers this weekend. Finally. You do a lot of college football. You were obviously a coach at Pitt. You're a great recruiter. You were tied with Jimmy Johnson for years at the college level. Ohio State, Oregon. Listen, the first round of the playoff, the road teams were awful. I think we go to neutral fields, the games will be much more competitive. I really worry about Texas. I always feel Texas leaves too many points on the sideline. I watched Ohio State and I think they're so dynamic. Ryan Day gets a lot of crap. You do Big Ten network stuff. So you've seen Ohio State every week. They lost to Michigan and Oregon. But if you felt like all year long did you feel like Ohio State was the best team? Did you feel Oregon was. What do you make of that matchup?
Ben Johnson
No, I thought Oregon was, to be honest with you, up until about two weeks ago, three weeks ago, I think Ohio State, everyone, they have the most talent. When they played Oregon the first time, it's very difficult. Yes, it was out of Oregon, we know that. But it's very difficult to practice the type of speed early in the year that Oregon has on their football team. At running back, at quarterback, at receiver. Defensively they are a fast football team. And you know, I remember we were at Miami and we would play the Oklahoma's in the world. I mean it took us time. We could. You couldn't simulate that in practice.
Doug Gottlieb
Right.
Ben Johnson
But I think it's a year's gone on. I think Ohio State has found its rhythm. I think they've recommitted to the running game where they're a lot more balanced right now. And I like Ohio State right now where they're at. Early on they were just so caught up in this wide receiver talent and we're going to open it up and on and on. I mean that's why they lost to Oregon the first game. I think they had seven runs the whole second half, you know, so they know, seriously, they've recommitted to the run game. They've got two outstanding backs and all those kids, there was about seven guys that would have been top two three round draft picks at Ohio State. They all came back for one reason, to win that championship. And boy, I think, I think last week, beating Tennessee, that, that was a lot of pressure. I mean, all right, is sec, scc, Tennessee, you know, everybody should be in playoffs from the sec. I'll tell you what, it wasn't even a game. Yeah, that did a lot for Ohio State's confidence.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, I agree. Dave Wanstadt, one of the good guys. Bears, Dolphins, Big Ten network. Great seeing you as always, coach.
Ben Johnson
All right, Colin, Be safe, buddy.
Doug Gottlieb
All right. In Chicago in his condo, overlooks the city. He has so much information and so many stories and I don't know, I was very much Vrabel in Chicago. That Ben Johnson thing, after last night, I don't know. I'm watching Bryce Young resurgence, Sam resurgence, Baker resurgence. All about a coordinator or an offensive coach. I mean, it's just Herbert with Harbaugh. Herbert's always been good. Jared Goff with Dan Campbell, Jared Goff's always been good. That's different. But when a quarterback has lost, how do you resurrect the franchise? How do you resurrect the quarterback, not the franchise, the kid. It's generally offensive coach, certain sensibility the defensive guys don't have. Go to the Fox Sports app to make your picks. One of the questions is which QB will have the most passing yards. Colin we got Baker Mayfield vs. The Panthers, Jordan Law vs. The Vikings, Darnold vs. The packers, or Cooper Rush in Philadelphia.

Baker Mayfield against the Panthers.
J. Mac
I like that call. Though he has struggled in I think the defensive coordinator got there. He struggled in three or four games against them, including earlier this year. But given those options, I I don't hate your pick. I think you're warming up just for the stretch run there, buddy.

Listen, I don't love the card this week. I'll be up front. I don't love it. I mean, I bet these five bowl games today, like total garbage games, just threw money, pizza money for fun. Yeah, but let's are Chargers, Patriots. I. I like this Chargers team. I like the vibes. Patriots look good. Last week ended up losing. The headline will be Makoni. See Makoni do bolts Go bananas. I will take the Chargers in New England. This line's at four and a half. It's creeping up a little bit. There's some interesting stuff here. So, hey, Christmas week, who wants to travel east east to play a game in the cold weather? However, chargers have had four 1pm starts this year. They have dominated the first half of all those games. They've led at halftime of all four. Now they're not playing great teams. One was Pittsburgh. But what does that say? Colin, that's a Jim Harbaugh thing. This dude is always prepared. And I do look at this Patriots team.
Eric Mangini
They were.
J. Mac
They gave everything max effort last week in Buffalo, right? Hey, we want to play spoiler division rival. I think they let their guard down a little bit this week. I don't like some of the vibes in New England. Some of the chatter from the head coach Mayo, is he coming back? Are we certain? Do you think he's definitely back next year? Because that.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes.
J. Mac
Okay. You think Craft is going on the chief? All right, so I'll go with Chargers. Drake May has had a pretty good, you know, run this year. I think he's shown well, but this Chargers defense has played excellent. I'll take the Chargers 2713.
Doug Gottlieb
Tomorrow's headlines. Today, Broncos at the Bengals. I love Denver in this spot.
J. Mac
You know, listen, we love talking Broncos on this show. You have made them like what, Maybe like the. The. Like the show favorite. You love this team because you're all over them. However, the headline will be mall walking Bengals keep Broncos out of step. Look at that little mall walking. My mom likes to go to the mall and walk around in Florida because it's too hot. Colin. I cannot get enough of Patrick Surtan versus Jamar Chase. So I've been digging into this matchup. Patrick certain this season, one touchdown allowed. He has allowed one catch over 20 yards. He's been locked down, but he's going up against Chase, who leads the NFL in receptions, yards, touchdowns. He's on. On fire. They met in 2021. You want to guess who had the better of that matchup? Jamar Chase. One catch for three yards against Sir Tan. Now it's 2021. A lot has changed. But this is interesting. If T. Higgins cannot go, I will not feel good about my Bengals pick. But ultimately, I think CEO Cincinnati gets it. I think they're on a mission. I would not be surprised if we hear after the fact, Joe Burrow made an impassioned plea in the locker room, I want to get in the playoffs. You're seeing a different Burrow. He's been fired up on the bench. Talking back a little bit to the coach.
Doug Gottlieb
A little intense.
J. Mac
I. I like Burrow here getting the dub and the Bengals win and cover.
Doug Gottlieb
You said your mom likes walking in the mall, J. Mack, Everybody's mom likes walking.
J. Mac
Yeah. That's a grandma thing. I did not know that. Okay. Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
Tomorrow's headline today, the game that I didn't put in the blazing five, but it was the last game. I like the Rams in this spot. It's a number situation. What say you?
J. Mac
I could have swore Tuesday on this show. You lied.
Doug Gottlieb
I did. Yeah. So the number got worse.
J. Mac
Who cares? It's six and a half. The headline will be Pukaboo. I see you playing Rams ain't no fun in games. Oh, my gosh. This is the ultimate revenge spot of the week. Do you remember the Cardinals smashed them this year? 4,000, 110. Al massive beatdown. Puka did not play. Cooper cup left in the first quarter and it was just a absolute beatdown. I. I like the Rams here. Big. This feels like a little payback. And if you're Arizona, man, you went into last week. Come on. We got. We were leading the division and. And it's starting to fall apart. You're playing the Panthers. You start slow, you come back, you lose in overtime. Overtime, loss. Got to travel back home. Wounds. I'm seeing both tackles out. I'm seeing James Connor is questionable. Does Connor just say, hey, let me just shut it down. Nothing to play for. I like the Rams here, McVeigh. I wouldn't be surprised if this was 3720. Rams really put on a show. Hey, you. You gave out the number. What. What is McVeigh like 10 and one in December? He is a great late season coach and I think they. They put it on.
Doug Gottlieb
See, Andy Reed and Belichick really Good when it gets frosty. Tomorrow's headlines today, Colts at Giants. I thought about this one too. I, I tell you, I like that Colts roster.
J. Mac
I do. And I like the Colts a lot. You see that number? It's coming down and I'll tell you why. The headline will be just like we drew it up. Giants get closer to locking up number one pick. Look at Day Ball there. Listen, Drew Lock, he was bad against Atlanta, which is a bottom feeder defense. However, in the last 30 minutes here, Anthony Richardson has not practiced yet all week. They thought he was going to go today, so now they just listed him as questionable. And Joe Flacco was taking first team reps. Yeah, all week. So now it's Joe Flacco, which to me, when last we saw Flacco, it was pretty rough.
Doug Gottlieb
It was pretty rough.
J. Mac
He was awful.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
J. Mac
And now I'm a little buyer's remorse. However, like, like the headline said, this is a Giants team that wants the number one pick badly. You look at who's starting on the offensive line for them, a lot of defensive players who are, who are these dudes? Practice squad guys. I mean, Colin, they're not a competitive team this year. I do think Flacco can do enough. Jonathan Taylor, by the way, running wild. He is having a very good season. They got a good team, man.
Doug Gottlieb
Seattle and the Colts, their quarterback away. I like the rosters, I like the GMs.
J. Mac
We like Steichen. I think the Colts will be fine. Here at seven and a half is a big number to be laying on the road. But the Giants going for the winless season at home, it's bad in New York between the jets and the Giants. It is. It's a, it's a rough go for New York football.
Doug Gottlieb
Two more to go. I'm interested in this one. Tomorrow's headlines today your. Your optimism is. Has pivoted to skepticism and cynicism on the Jets, Jets, Bills. What.
J. Mac
What do you like is in what like July and August. Come on. When Aaron Rodgers wasn't saying nonsense, Colin, this one could get ugly. The headline will be green with envy. Wicked Witch from West melts Aaron Rodgers. You know, Mangini said something awesome earlier. Aaron's talking like he wants to be released.
Rich Davis
I know.
J. Mac
You know, I didn't. I thought at the time he was just taking a shot. But for Mangini, who was a head coach to say that. And Mangini dealt with Woody.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, he knows Woody.
J. Mac
You know how ticked off Woody Johnson must be. And oh, by the way, I'm looking At the jets all of a sudden. Devonte Adams not practicing this week. Sauce Gardner not practicing.
Doug Gottlieb
Oh, no, no. The jets injury reports, Bru. It's their best players.
J. Mac
The Penn State tackle out. Two other linemen haven't practiced. AVT has not. So this line starting to creep up to nine and a half. One of the producers just texted me it's hitting 10 in some spots. So I know Buffalo has nothing to technically play for, right? But this is Buffalo Jets, Buffalo homes are tough out. Yeah, I, I think this one could get ugly and go sideways. I'll go 31 to 7 bills with.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay. I took the Buckeyes over the Ducks. Tomorrow's headlines today, that Boise State Nittany Lions games got your interest peaked.
J. Mac
So I, I, we love the playoff last week. I mean it was, it was spectacular.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, you did. I took dogs warming my heart. You took favorites.
J. Mac
You were right say favorites rolled at home. Now we go neutral site this week. Okay. I do like your Ohio State pick. I would add that now these games are wednes Tuesday, Wednesday.
Doug Gottlieb
Right?
J. Mac
So we got some time we'll chew them up. But the headline for this one will be Ashton Powers running back shag game balls after groovy performance. I'm going with a outright upset here. Double digit dog. Give me Boise State taking down Penn State.
Doug Gottlieb
Wow.
J. Mac
I took the points already and the more I dig in. Listen, I like Penn State a lot. They're great at home. We know under the whiteout scenario against smu, it was, it was a scene and SMU gave the game away. I don't think Boise is going to do that. And you. Look, I'm just telling you, if you want to have fun, go look up Ashton Genti versus Oregon this year. Oregon could not stop him under and all of Nobody stops this guy. And I know the competition wasn't great, but we're gonna see this guy become like one of those, oh, this guy's legit. Carving up Penn State should be a good game. I'm, I'm more fired up for this, I think, than any of the games. Ohio State, Oregon's great. Texas, Arizona State a little less Georgia.
Doug Gottlieb
Notre Dame, baby.
J. Mac
Well, that's a backup quarterback for Georgia.
Doug Gottlieb
It's Georgia.
J. Mac
And, and the Notre Dame stuff that's percolating behind the scenes, which we, which we alluded to yesterday. I don't know if we get to it here in headlines, but there's the College Football playoff. I'm excited for.
Doug Gottlieb
No, it's going to be great. We, we do this at the end of Every week I force you to pick an upset. Let's go to the NFL schedule. Sorry, radio audience, I'm not going to read all the games. I, I like the Atlanta Falcons to upset the Washington Commanders. Michael Pennix, impress me. Do you have an upset?
J. Mac
Well, what's the line on the Falcons? Four and a half. Is that really an upset? Oh, man, Colin, this is bleak. I'd rather take Arizona State against Texas than any of this poo poo platter.
Doug Gottlieb
How about Carolina at Tampa?
J. Mac
Yeah, yeah, I'll go. Yeah, I guess I would go Carolina. They've been feisty late in the season. Man, I saw Winfield ruled out another receiver.
Doug Gottlieb
How about this? How about this? Are beat up today. If you could draft Bryce Young or C.J. stroud, who would you take?
J. Mac
I, I can't do it on a six game sample size. I would still take Stroud.
Doug Gottlieb
Okay. It's. Bryce looks pretty good.
J. Mac
It's.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, Bryce looks pretty good.
J. Mac
He has looked. He's shown well. The Dallas game, he did not play well.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah.
J. Mac
A few weeks ago at home. Yeah, it's a, it's a tough NFL slate this week and the three games Saturday, so there's not a billion games Sunday. You know, this is a hang with the fam a little bit weekend or.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, yeah, well, I'm, I'm, I'm Saturday. I'm going to be watching football day.
J. Mac
Yeah, the Saturday games are must see. I don't know how I'm going to get out of family stuff, but you know, maybe put in a call, call me and act like there's like a big story and then I'll just tell the fam, hey, I need some time away.
Doug Gottlieb
Breaking news or something.
J. Mac
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
All right, I can do that. There's a club we go to from time to time. It's a good time. Haven't been there in a while. You could go to the club.
J. Mac
I don't think the wife's gonna want you doing that, but.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, okay. Sometimes you have to put your foot down on fun. Oh, sometimes you gotta stand on business. Okay. Nice week of show shows. Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – “Best of The Herd”
Release Date: December 27, 2024
Host: Colin Cowherd
Produced by: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
Introduction
In the “Best of The Herd” episode, Colin Cowherd, alongside co-hosts Doug Gottlieb and guest speakers Dave Wanstadt and Ben Johnson, delves deep into the current landscape of the NFL. The episode provides insightful analysis, passionate debates, and strategic betting tips, all while addressing the intricacies of team performances, coaching dynamics, and player developments.
Chicago Bears: A Case Study in Struggles and Potential
The episode opens with a critical examination of the Chicago Bears' season performance, focusing particularly on quarterback Caleb Williams and the team's offensive line.
Doug Gottlieb [03:50]: "I felt bad for Caleb Williams. He's been sacked 67 times this year, seven times last night. That’s more than Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes combined."
Cowherd highlights the Bears' offensive line, noting their poor ranking and insufficient pay, which contribute to the quarterback's struggles.
Doug Gottlieb [06:00]: "The Bears offensive line ranked 29th and is the second least paid offensive line for a perpetually cheap franchise. It's a bad old line."
The discussion shifts to the coaching strategies under Jim Harbaugh, questioning whether a more innovative offensive coordinator could rejuvenate the team's performance.
Doug Gottlieb [05:20]: "Maybe a clever young offensive coordinator is the answer, but you have to save this kid."
Coaching Dynamics: The Mike McCarthy Debate
A significant portion of the discussion centers around Mike McCarthy’s coaching legacy and his recent job security within the NFL landscape.
Doug Gottlieb [08:03]: "There's a story I saw this morning, and I've said through the years, I think Mike McCarthy's a good coach. Don't put him in Andy Reid's category or Sean McVeigh, but I think he's a good coach."
Ben Johnson, joining as a guest, defends McCarthy's coaching prowess despite past criticisms and emphasizes his adaptability and success with elite quarterbacks.
Ben Johnson [50:23]: "Look at Sam Darnold, Baker, Bryce Young. It's generally offensive coach, certain sensibility the defensive guys don't have."
The conversation underscores McCarthy’s ability to handle high-pressure environments and his potential return to the Bears, suggesting that fresh offensive strategies could benefit the team.
Doug Gottlieb [08:49]: "He takes over an old, rigid, stubborn team and can potentially turn it around with the right offensive coach."
Quarterback Performance and Development
Caleb Williams’ performance is scrutinized extensively, with Cowherd and Johnson debating the impact of coaching on his development.
Doug Gottlieb [06:30]: "He has four 300-yard passing games, more than Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes, but he's been sacked excessively."
Ben Johnson advocates for stabilizing the offensive coaching staff to foster a better environment for Williams, drawing parallels to successful quarterback-coach relationships in the league.
Ben Johnson [51:01]: "I think that helps the young quarterbacks. It gives your quarterback a chance to convert third downs and rest your defense."
Betting Insights: Blazing Five Segment
The hosts transition into a betting segment called "Blazing Five," where they present their top bets for upcoming NFL games.
Broncos at Bengals: Broncos +3.5
Doug Gottlieb [37:06]: "I get Sean Payton, a great offensive coach with extra rest, and I have the Bengals on a little shorter week they played a Saturday game."
Raiders at Saints: Saints +1
Doug Gottlieb [37:40]: "Any team that gets humiliated in a standalone game usually plays with intensity, especially if they're home."
Bills at Jets: Bills -9.5
Doug Gottlieb [37:50]: "Buffalo don't give the ball up. You can't get to Josh Allen."
Falcons at Commanders: Falcons +4
Doug Gottlieb [38:20]: "Michael Penix the offense is different. Raheem Morris has got a strong defense playing well."
Ohio State vs. Oregon: Ohio State -2.5
Doug Gottlieb [38:50]: "Ohio State's defense this season, they have better players and a stellar running game."
Notable Betting Quote:
Doug Gottlieb [37:05]: "Lay the points 2817 Bills winning cover Falcons at commander."
Guest Insights: Ben Johnson on Team Strategies
Ben Johnson provides expert analysis on the resurgence of the run game in the NFL, attributing it to better coaching strategies and the benefits it brings to young quarterbacks.
Ben Johnson [51:01]: "Running the football helps young quarterbacks immensely. It gives them manageable third downs and allows the defense to rest."
He also discusses the balance between offensive and defensive plays, emphasizing the importance of adaptative coaching to maximize team performance.
Ben Johnson [52:30]: "They have the second fewest penalties in the NFL and a positive turnover margin. All the things that win games, they're doing a very good job."
Philadelphia Eagles: Emotional Coaching and Team Control
The Philadelphia Eagles’ coach, Nick Sirianni, is analyzed for his passionate and sometimes volatile interactions, both with players and fans. Cowherd questions whether Sirianni's emotional demeanor is beneficial or detrimental to the team’s cohesion.
Doug Gottlieb [52:52]: "Philadelphia's coach, Nick Sirianni, has had multiple instances of outbursts. It’s not the way you would have done it."
Ben Johnson counters by highlighting the team's performance metrics, suggesting that Sirianni's emotional intensity might be translating into better gameplay.
Ben Johnson [53:50]: "They are one of the few teams in the top 10 in offense and defense with a positive turnover margin."
Special Segments: Call to Action Against Hate
Repeatedly throughout the episode, co-hosts Lavar Arrington and Eric Mangini interrupt the main discussion segments with messages encouraging listeners to combat hate in society. They advocate for unity and collective action to “call a timeout against hate.”
Lavar Arrington [01:02 & 15:32 & 31:37 & 43:31 & 75:05 & 77:35]: "In our country, the hate is at an all-time high. We need to take a timeout against hate by visiting standup toallhate.org..."
Closing Remarks and Future Episodes
As the episode concludes, the hosts reiterate the importance of strategic coaching, team dynamics, and informed betting choices. They tease upcoming episodes focusing on college football playoffs and promise continued in-depth analysis.
Doug Gottlieb [75:26]: "We've had a lot of fun this week. Next week is an all-timer with extended shows focusing on college football playoffs."
