It's the Herd, Fox Sports Radio. Levar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for Colin. You can find us as always on the iHeartRadio app. You can listen to us on hundreds of affiliates all across the country on this Monday in which people have opened up the law offices of Bitch and Moan to discuss what the f that was that the NBA rolled out during All Star Weekend.
Dallas Goddard
They was, they was tweaking. I mean tweaking on NBA All Star Weekend.
Jonas Knox
It's just.
LeVar Arrington
You know, people not real thrilled, not real thrilled with the, the current format or whatever this, this format was. This past weekend you had a dunk contest featuring a guy who's played, you know, 14 seconds in the NBA win it again. You had whatever this rinky dink circus tent pop up event that was supposed to be the All Star game show back up. And people are not happy about it and are not thrilled with the content and the viewing experience that they got var over the All Star Weekend.
Dallas Goddard
I, I was thrilled cause I didn't have an experience because I didn't view it.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
LeVar Arrington
If you want me to break down who had the best dunk of the night on Saturday.
Dallas Goddard
I watched it. I watched the highlights of it all. But to watch all of it, you know why it doesn't have that type of mass appeal? Because let me tell you something, them dunks were crazy good. They're crazy good dunks, man. And that used to be the highlight of somewhat of a, of an NBA season. That was what you wanted. You waited for, you were excited. Who's going to be in the dunk contest? Who's doing it this year? And you would learn like you said, somebody who doesn't even play very many minutes. You would learn about new people and they would become celebrities. I'll never forget when Kenny Skywalker won the dunk contest doing like, like arrow aerodynamic like acrobatic like you know, like a ballet he was doing ballet in the air when he was dunking. Like, Kenny Skywalker wasn't like a dope basketball player for the Knicks. But we found out we learned about who he was because of the way he was dunking. Like, it just built a lot of. It built a lot of brands. And in the NBA back in the day, like in, in the late, you know, mid-80s, early 90s, you know, 90s, like it was All Star Weekend was a thing. And I think, I think the NBA is suffering from the same exact thing that the NFL is suffering from as it applies to their All Star weekend, which is what is the relevance of, of these weekends. What can you do to make these weekends more relevant than what they are? And I don't. I think it's because of technology and all of these different things that's going on. Fast paced technology. I think it's very. It is a riddle that the NFL or the NBA has yet to figure out.
LeVar Arrington
So the way they laid it out was it's four different teams. You had rising stars, you had just like whatever the TNT crew had their teams and to break down the different categories and they would all meet up and then they would go into the final, just Team Shaq, Kenny, Chuck, Candace park, like all that stuff, it was just a fiasco. Like there's just. There's too much going on. It was not all that entertaining. It wasn't funny. Like they tried their hardest to try and add comedy to it. It wasn't funny. And so Draymond Green, who is, you know, slowly becoming better and better and better and his media career, after he's done play, it's already blossoming. After his career is over, he's going to be, you know, sitting with, you know, the, the great medium, the great former players to ever do it post career when it comes to the media. He spoke last night on TNT and gave a brutally honest critique of this new format.
Dallas Goddard
You work all year to be an All Star and you get to play up to 40 and then you're done. This is so unfair to Victor Wembayama who just took this game really seriously. Shea Gilgis Alexander, who just took this game really seriously. When you talk about chasing after the points, Melo, Kobe and all these guys who've had great scoring nights, they don't get the opportunity to do that with this game. Also, we can watch some rising stars. We're about to watch the Olympic team. Now we get the treat of watching the Olympic team play against a U19 team. Come on, what are we doing?
Capital One Bank Guy
Scale of 1 to 10 your thoughts.
Dallas Goddard
Of the format, 10 being the best. Yes.
Pete Prisco
A zero sucks.
Dallas Goddard
Well, at least he's honest. And that's a, and that's a fair, honest assessment.
LeVar Arrington
You know what I think the real problem is with the NBA. I think the problem is the timing of it all. That. Why would you have. Because listen, you mentioned the NFL. All Star Games minus Major League Baseball are awful.
Dallas Goddard
They're awful.
LeVar Arrington
Like the Pro bowl looks like an airing of double dare from 20 years ago. It's like you're waiting for some guy to slide down a chocolate slide and pull a flag out of the nose. It's awful. They've, they've thought they were doing to try and protect players in the Pro Bowl. It's terrible. It's not so much that the All Star Game sucks. It's the timing of it all. The NFL season just ended. There are people that are looking for things to watch and the NBA throws out this instead of, hey, why don't we maybe do the All Star Game? I don't know, like, do it the same weekend of the Pro Bowl. Do it earlier. Like, let's, let's, let's move it up earlier so that, that way when the NFL season is, we're putting on primetime marquee matchups. You want to throw Celtics thunder on because they're two of the best teams in the league, that's fine. You want to throw the Lakers with Luka on. But do that and present your product timing wise in a better. Imagine if you're an NBA fan and you're like, all right, I'm going to give this NFL a try and the first thing you see is the Pro Bowl. You'll be looking around going, what the f is this? If you're the NBA, I don't know why they refuse to counter program. I don't know why they refuse to acknowledge you're not even the second most popular sport anymore. You're third behind college football. Why don't you, like, adjust your timing? We've talked about, you know, start the season on Christmas Day and move it back so you're not competing with the NFL during and college football in the World Series and, and major, all the other stuff that goes on in the fall, move your season back. In this case, this feels like an easy fix. Just have your All Star game sooner, whatever you want to roll out. But the first weekend out of the gate with no football, this is the product. You present it like, it doesn't make any sense to me because it's an awful Watch. And now all the conversation is about, man, the league is broken. It needs to do this, it needs to do that. Instead of, we could be talking about great games, great matchups, like, like make it a marquee moment to where NFL season's over, we'll take it from here. And instead they rolled out crap.
Dallas Goddard
But again, I' say the saddest part of the commentary, outside of it being true, is, is that the, the dunks were phenomenal. They weren't just good, they were phenomenal. And nobody cared. You know who cared? The people who are probably upset right now that I said nobody cared. And that's like the, the, the niche portion of basketball fanatics. You have some basketball purists who love to judge anybody who doesn't, which you have that in every sport, but those are the people who care. What I don't understand is, again, how do you allow for such a disconnect to take place on something that has been such a major part of our American culture to slip into non relevance? I just don't get it. Like the three point contest, people like watching it. That's something that people will watch it. It was something that it mattered. But make no mistake about it, you enjoyed the game because you knew in the second half they were all going to play and they were going to play hard and they were going to want to win the game. And the dunk contest, like that's what it was. And I just, I, I asked myself, when, when I, when we were coming into the topic, I asked myself, is this just a symptom of me? Like old heads are always the ones that say, oh, it was so much better when it, when I was coming up. It was, it was so different. Da, da da these days. And you guys, you young, young bucks don't know anything about, you know, what, what it's all about this, that is so different. Now. Am I, am I take, like I gotta take a step back and say, am I coming at it from the wrong lens, from the wrong perspective? And I looked, I looked at social media because social media can now give you an idea of how you're feeling and what the algorithms are and because if it's something, that's something, it's going to be there, it's going to pop up. It's going like, you're making fun of Jello, you're making fun, you're making fun of his song. That's one of the highlights of the whole deal is making fun of Jello being, being the main, that's your main Performer.
LeVar Arrington
What's there to make fun of one.
Dallas Goddard
One song. Like it's not even like the dude got an album out. Like the dude has one song that they may go viral. Not even really a real performer. Like I'm sitting there, I'm like, you did not need all this gimmicky stuff. And. And it made me take a step back and say to myself, are we now looking at an NBA? That is a personality less NBA. That's what it may. My ultimate, my ultimate thought and my conclusion was do we have an NBA now? Like, do you know the personality of Victor Wembanyama? Do you know his personality?
LeVar Arrington
Yeah, well, he reads books before games. Which.
Dallas Goddard
That's a no. Do you know his personality?
LeVar Arrington
You know.
Dallas Goddard
You know why we like Anthony ANT man so much? Because it's the first time we get a pulse of somebody having a frickin personality that. You know why we like Draymond Green? Because we get a pulse of what a person. Do you know who Draymond Green is? Do you know how he is?
LeVar Arrington
Sure.
Dallas Goddard
Exactly, exactly. Steph. Steph Curry. Relatively obscure. You know, he could shoot the ball. You know, he's a good dude, does things in the community. You know his wife. But do we really know his personality? You have those type of personalities from back in the day, but it's like they're like not, they're not the A list group of celebrities. That's. You knew who Michael Jordan was. In fact, Michael Jordan told all of us to come fly with him. And every one of us thought we could fly. And that's why we still be wearing this. I got. I don't have no Jordans on today, but I had some on yesterday. Oh man, I had some on yesterday and I'd be damned if I don't have Jordans on more often than not. Got some eyes on, right? Bottom line, new ballots. We knew who Dominique Wilkins was. We were all trying to be the human highlight film. We all were. You knew who Spud Web was. He was the more quiet one. He was like that quiet one. But you had so many personalities. Charles Barkley telling you to F off. I'm not your, your role model. I'm not your kid's role model. I'm not your role model. I think what has happened with the NBA more specifically, which you shouldn't lose because they don't wear helmets. You don't have to battle people not knowing who you are and what you look like. You're six foot, whatever, looking like an avatar. You gotta have. There has to Be more, more established personalities, like throwing guns up in the club, throwing ones. Strippers like you can't have John Morant, who is one of your biggest names and, and dopest players. That's how, that's how we know you. That's how we know you. Like, that's Jason Williams back in the day, and he's like the degenerate of all the superstars. But even then, you knew who Jason Williams was, personality wise, because it was a point to make sure that the personalities were getting consumed by the consumer. You're selling the game. We know who LeBron James is. We know his personality. We know who he is.
Greg Tuohy
We.
Dallas Goddard
He drives it because his personality and us knowing him, us going on this NBA journey with LeBron makes sense. How many players in today's NBA can we say that about when? You could say that about each team. Each team, if you were a Pistons fan, it was Vinnie the Microwave, it was Isaiah Thomas, it was Joe Dumars, it was Rick Mahorn. And you knew who they were because they had, they all had Bill Lambert, they all had their, their personalities that you love that made them the bad boys. If it was the New York Knicks, from Oakley to Mason to Ewing to Starks to. To Mark Jackson, you knew who these people were by market. And their personalities drove the game and they mattered. From the Celtics to, you name it, the, the Rockets, they all had their different personalities. The Portland Trailblazers, the Indiana Pacers, sitting there choking that Reggie, Reggie Miller. We got to know Reggie Miller. He's sitting there choking himself out to Spike Lee. There were so many great moments that built a relationship between the players, the teams and the fans.
LeVar Arrington
It's unrecognizable.
Dallas Goddard
You don't have comparison to that. I mean, am I off on this, do we?
Capital One Bank Guy
There's.
Dallas Goddard
That's a disconnect. That's a disconnect. Like what's, what is the connection to the player? What is the connection to the players as in. In general? And what's the connection to the team? Where has that gone? Because I think in a way largely in part because of fantasy football and, and all this stuff going on with gambling. I think it's decentral as well. I think that's a large part of the problem that we have in football at this point now as well, is that decentralizing of what the fan could really focus in on and that connection to the player and that connection to the team. I think it's been, I think it's been removed.
LeVar Arrington
Well, I mean, the good news is the All Star weekend's over.
Dallas Goddard
So there you go.
LeVar Arrington
At least there's that.
Dallas Goddard
Hopefully this is the last time we gotta talk about it.
LeVar Arrington
Like at least at least there's that. So. So if you are not a fan of the All Star weekend, congratulations. It's Monday, it's over. So 0SUC where are you? Draymond? It is the Herd here on fox Sports Radio. LaVar Arrington, Jonas Knox sitting in for Colin. So we are going to have some Herdline news coming up later on this hour with Greg Tuohy starring Greg Tuohy. We'll be doing that throughout the course of the show as well too as we take you all the way up until 3pm Eastern Time, noon Pacific.

Dallas Goddard
Your tan. Because it is a phenomenal tan. I mean, you got to be honest. That is a very distinctive tan, Pete. I mean, let's just be clear here. You got broad shoulders. You got a good tan. I was giving you all the props in the world. Now you come on here shooting at me.
Greg Tuohy
You know, I don't know. I don't know if you were giving me props that you were taking shots straight pops. It's all good props.
Dallas Goddard
You're my guy, pete.
Doug Gottlieb
Since.
Dallas Goddard
Since D.C. come on, man. We got history. Dang.
Greg Tuohy
You know.
LeVar Arrington
Hey, all right. Hey, Pete, what did. Why did you piss off Eagles fans the way that you did?
Greg Tuohy
Yeah.
Capital One Bank Guy
What'd you do now?
Pete Prisco
Why you do it like what you do now?
LeVar Arrington
All these other quarterbacks, you would take over. Jalen hurts. And now the fan base is going after you on social media. Do you happen to see any of.
Greg Tuohy
Oh, yeah, I see it. And I was on a Philly radio station today, and another couple of them reached out, and everybody wants to take a shot at me. And. And the question was posed to me, which quarterback would I take over? J. A bunch of different quarterbacks. Would you take him for the next five years over Jalen Hurts. And a bunch of them. I said yes. And so now, of course, the Philly fans are going nuts, and, you know, fresh off the super bowl, they can yell and scream all they want, but. But the reality is, about the last month of the season, they weren't sitting there raving about their quarterback either. I don't care what they say or their coach. Yeah, he's A good player, but would I take him over certain quarterbacks in the league? The answer to that question is no.
Dallas Goddard
Give some exact. Okay, okay.
Greg Tuohy
Would you take him over Justin Herbert? I wouldn't.
Dallas Goddard
I'm not going to answer. What do you guys think?
Greg Tuohy
Why won't you answer?
Dallas Goddard
Because I'm just. Because it's your questions that you answered, so I was just letting you have it.
Pete Prisco
I think Herbert's an interesting one. Herbert's an interesting one because I think if you're. I think the real question is, would Howie Roseman take Justin Herbert over Jalen Hurts? And I would imagine he would say yes.
Dallas Goddard
Dang.
Greg Tuohy
Well, there's a. The other one was Trevor Lawrence. I said, look, right now, I'd say they're there. I take. I have a hard time picking between the two of them because Hertz has played better, but Lawrence has much more upside in my mind, you know, and so that was a tough one for me.
Capital One Bank Guy
I got.
Greg Tuohy
They got mad about that Dak Prescott. Now, Dak Prescott led the league in touchdown passes last year.
Pete Prisco
Oh, stop. You take Hurts over him right now. Are you serious? You take Dak over Hertz?
Greg Tuohy
I don't know if I would.
Dallas Goddard
I don't know if I would. I 100% would.
Capital One Bank Guy
All right.
Greg Tuohy
By the way, in that little playoff run, he just had a. Yeah. Average throwing about 200 yards passing. And you know the sack numbers that. He holds the ball way too long. His sack numbers. He has 38 sacks on the season, and he threw like 200, which is. Ties his career high from two years ago. He threw 200. Almost 200 fewer passes. He holds the ball too long. He's good. See, the way I look at it, guys, you can take one through five, and there's now a five because Jaden Daniels is now in that five. The one through five, those guys are clearly above everybody else. And then the next group of seven or eight, nine guys, they're all kind of lumped in together, if you ask me.
Pete Prisco
I'm gonna help us get off this topic and go to another quarterback, one that seems to be disgruntled with his situation with his franchise. And he's a guy that you've been very high on, Pete. You know, you didn't necessarily predict him. Never win a Super bowl yet. But you said he's gonna win multiple.
Colin Cowherd
That's.
Pete Prisco
That's Joe Burrow. Burrow. Did the Bengals get Jamar Chase, T. Higgins and Trey Hendrickson all done this off season? And if they. You don't think they do. How's the long term outlook for Burrow in Cincinnati. Do you think he's going to eventually get frustrated? He may end up somewhere else like Carson Palmer.
Greg Tuohy
Well, you look, I think first off, I'll start with the first part of it. I think it's going to be tough to get all three of them done with long term extensions.
Pete Prisco
Okay, real quick, real quick, why do you say that? When we look at Philly and Burroughs even said this, they figure out how to make it work. So why can't make it work.
Greg Tuohy
The question becomes, do you, do you want to make it work? And the reason I'm saying, of course those are good players, but what does that do to the rest of your roster? Are they any damn good at all in defense? And you know, Henry.
Pete Prisco
No, but we're talking about the super bowl champs. Literally just did this with multiple players. They have six players who are making 20 million or more a year on their salary.
Greg Tuohy
Yeah. And then they supplement it by going to get a guy like Zach Vaughn and paying him a one year deal and he becomes a big part of their defense. And now he goes. Now they got to either pay him or he leaves. I get it. You can do it. Brady. That's not, that's not what I'm saying. What I'm saying is if you, why not, you could tag Higgins and maybe get a market for him out there and trade them and get some assets. And then if you want to keep Hendrickson and you want to pay Chase. Okay, would I try and keep all of them? Absolutely. But if you, if the money gets too crazy and you can't, then I think you have to prioritize where you want to go with it. And you know, if you take Hendrickson off that defense, what are they, Are they any good? They're horrible.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, they weren't good with them.
Greg Tuohy
Well then now they're going to be even worse. And that puts even more pressure on Joe Burrow in that offense. So. So yeah, I think ideally they tag Higgins, get a deal done with Chase, extend Hendrickson, because, you know, Hendrickson isn't a kid anymore either extend him and then, and then come back to Higgins and see if he can get something done. And if you can't, then you pedal, get some, something back for him.
Pete Prisco
But what about the second part of the question though? Do you think it would get to a point?
Greg Tuohy
Not going anywhere. He's one of the top, he's one of the top four quarter. He's one of the guys. He's an IT guy. You don't get Rid, you don't let that go out the door, so. No, I don't think so.
Pete Prisco
So you wouldn't have said that about Palmer during his time with the Bengals?
Greg Tuohy
Well, he also suffered a major knee injury at one point. Remember.
Pete Prisco
Burrows had significant injuries like. Let's not go there.
Dallas Goddard
That's true.
Greg Tuohy
He hasn't since he's been there.
Pete Prisco
He had a very unique like wrist injury, elbow, wrist, like that again. It seemed like it took a little while to work itself out this year.
Greg Tuohy
Yeah, but he worked it out south out, all right. He threw. He had it on the MVP type season.
Pete Prisco
Pete, don't get distracted by it. You act like this franchise has ever built ever around any quarterback, Pete.
Greg Tuohy
Well, I mean they, they built around Boomer back in the day.
Doug Gottlieb
If you.
Pete Prisco
Would he say that? If you asked him would he say that? Because I've heard him talk otherwise on that and that's why he was. Palmer's gone. That's why he said maybe Burrow one day. It would be.
Greg Tuohy
But I think the old reputation of the Bengals is a little misguided now. It used to be. Don't get me wrong, I'm not going to sit here and defend what they used to.
Pete Prisco
So this isn't just because you're really close with a couple of the people in the front office that you're like.
Dallas Goddard
Sounds like there's a little bias in your voice.
Pete Prisco
He's pretty close to a couple people. I know.
Dallas Goddard
I won't say names.
Pete Prisco
I won't say names, Pete. But you and I both know you're. You're friendly. You're friendly with a few guys.
Dallas Goddard
Sounds like you're friendly, Pete.
Greg Tuohy
I'm not. I'm not friendly. I know some of them and. But the reality is I don't think they're as cheap as everybody portrays.
Dallas Goddard
Well, what are they? Tell us what they are, Pete.
Greg Tuohy
The question becomes, do you want to keep T. Higgins in lieu of going get help at other positions? That's. That's basically what it comes down to.
Dallas Goddard
Hmm.
Greg Tuohy
Would you?
Dallas Goddard
Yes, I would. I would keep T. Higgins.
Greg Tuohy
I keep them too. But, but if he gets irrational, then, then I'm not keeping him. I'll trade him somewhere, get something back for him.
Dallas Goddard
But that's the tag, right? Doesn't the tag remove the irrational approach to what it is you have going on? It's like you're getting.
Greg Tuohy
No, you can negotiate a deal with them.
Dallas Goddard
That's what I'm saying. You. You get a non exclusive tag that says we. You're giving them the opportunity to see what his value is on the open market. So if you, you come back and we got to have a conversation about your, your contract, then you understand that the market has spoken and that we're most likely your best option, right? Isn't that how it would play out? Or you just stay on that non.
Greg Tuohy
Exclusive, or you just tag them and then trade if you want to. I mean, you could do that too, I think. I think letting him leave via free agency would be the worst thing they could do.
LeVar Arrington
Pete Prisco joining us here on the Herd on Fox Sports Radio. Pete, who's the worst run organization in the NFL?
Dallas Goddard
Dang.
Greg Tuohy
Oh, good question.
Dallas Goddard
Saxonville.
Greg Tuohy
What?
Jonas Knox
No.
Pete Prisco
Pete, answer the question.
Greg Tuohy
Don't get me wrong.
Pete Prisco
Answer the question, Pete.
Greg Tuohy
When Trent Balky was in there running things, they were the worst runners. I would answer that question by 100.
Dallas Goddard
Carolina. I mean, that's a Jacksonville Carolina.
Greg Tuohy
Jacksonville. When Trent Balky was running the Jacksonville Jaguars, they were the worst run organization in the, in the league. I would agree. I would 100 agree with that.
LeVar Arrington
All right.
Greg Tuohy
You know, the owner gives that proposition a lot of power. And that power he brought in, you know, Urban Meyer. I mean, come on. He brought in Urban Meyer. Look what happened with that, that was. And so, and so people blame you for that whole situation. The worst run. Yeah. For that time being, it was the worst run organization. So yes, to answer that question, yes.
LeVar Arrington
What about right now?
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, right now. Who's got it now?
Greg Tuohy
Well, let's see who they hire as a general manager then I'll get back.
LeVar Arrington
Yeah, but they're down to five, right? They're down to five. They got there.
Greg Tuohy
They are down to five.
Capital One Bank Guy
But you know what?
Greg Tuohy
Look, Tony Vasily, who I know well and Brady knows him as well.
Pete Prisco
Here we go again. Here we go. He knows his pythons.
Greg Tuohy
They hired him in his executive VP and he's going to fix the organization. He's. They're going to hire the right GS, gonna fix it. And it all. And it all depends on who Liam, how Liam Cohen is as head coach. And I think from what I hear, he's going to be pretty good.
Dallas Goddard
But you never know. Oh, okay. Okay, Pete.
Greg Tuohy
It's just football, by the way. It's not that complicated. It really isn't. It. Look, I, you know, Tony Baselli, I worked with him on radio for all those years. That and, and had to teach him part of the game. I worked with him down here and now he's back and running the Jets. I had to teach him part of the game. Brady Quinn all over the tv everywhere. I work with him down here. I had to teach him part of it. So it's not that complicated. It's just. Damn football.
Jonas Knox
Pete, I love you.
Dallas Goddard
Way to do it. Way to do it. Way to go.
Pete Prisco
Everyone left you, Pete. Now you're the one here.
Dallas Goddard
Everybody.
Pete Prisco
Well done, Pete.
Dallas Goddard
You know what?
Greg Tuohy
They'll bring somebody else in to work with me and I'll teach him a thing or two every Sunday too.
Jonas Knox
Oh, man, there he is.
Pete Prisco
Go get some good chicken cutlets or something.
LeVar Arrington
The great Pete Prisco. You can get him on x@prisco CBS. And if you come for him, he does like the smoke. So he will respond on social media. Thanks, Pete. We appreciate it.
Greg Tuohy
All right, guys.
LeVar Arrington
Pete Prisco, senior NFL columnist from CBS Sports, CBS Sports HQ analyst.
Pete Prisco
He did pop, by the way, with the exception of a couple of eagles have been in the bottom half of the league and cash spending and if, especially if you take out Burrows money.
LeVar Arrington
So there you go. Yeah, he. I love Pete, man. You can tell. He always, he always manages an opportunity to get a few digs in, you know, he's got to take his shots.
Dallas Goddard
Why don't he take digs at you, man?
LeVar Arrington
There's just mutual respect. Just mutual respect, you know? Okay.
Capital One Bank Guy
Yeah. All right.
Dallas Goddard
That's cool.
LeVar Arrington
You know, just a couple of. Couple of guys.
Capital One Bank Guy

I'm Doug Gottlieb in for Colin Cowherd and for the next couple of hours I want to talk sports with you. From La Costa Canyon to Escondido, it's actually not far from each other. It probably wasn't the best. From Otay Mesa to San Clemente, that was better.
Dallas Goddard
From Baja to the Canadian Rockies.
Capital One Bank Guy
From Baja to the Canadian Rockies. Let me best 15 minutes in sports. You have to know to know. And if you're a SoCal long standing sports radio listener, you know exactly who I'm talking about. And that is a tip of the cap. That's not making fun in any sort of way. Hey, welcome in. Hope you're having a great day. J Stew, give me the weather update in sunny Southern California. Weather on the ones weather on the ones today.
Dallas Goddard
Mid 70s and sunny. Not a cloud in the sky. Doug in Southern California, back to you for traffic on the tooth.
Capital One Bank Guy
Okay, so Ryan, do you want to, do you want to guess when I guess we're working with here in Green Bay is. I'm. I'M looking out at. At actual. At the Bay. My dog loves it outside, no matter how cold it is outside. Do you want. Brian, you want to take any sort of guess of what it is right now?
Dallas Goddard
17 degrees.
Capital One Bank Guy
Okay. It is sunny and 25 degrees. Sunny and 25 feels like 21, I'm told last night it was in the last. I was the negatives. We're out of the negatives for a while. But it's a. It's a dry 25. That's the good thing, right? It's dry heat. It's dry heat. I bring it up because we're. We're two months away from the NFL draft being in Green Bay, and we had no snow in November and December and just dustings in January. And then we haven't gotten dumped. We had like back to back. So there's probably about 8 inches, 10 inches of snow on the ground, but no one has any idea what in April, it could be 75, it could be 45. We had no idea. But it's gonna be fun to have everybody in town for the NFL draft. Let's get to what we saw last night on the basketball floor. Really the only thing going of note was the Lakers taking on the Charlotte Hornets last night at. At Crypto. And the Lakers lose after having a big league. And there's like, you can make lots of. We can. We can do the whole blame pie that they used to do on Undisputed. We can make it out all to be LeBron's fault because he missed two shots in the last five seconds with a chance to send it to overtime. But we'd also would be being unfair to LeBron because, well, without LeBron they wouldn't have had that lead. He was the one Laker who really had it going. Of course, Austin Reeves got thrown out of the game for what he's for a verbal attack on an official, right? So then you end up having the Hornets win after the Hornets come storming back, outscore the Lakers 32 18. The third quarter at 20, 22 to 1 run. And the Lakers just did not come out of the locker room well. But I. Look, if you're. If you're honest and you're. And you're being fair, as much as I don't agree with the trade, I don't. But I also. There's lots of things I don't know about, and neither do you. Because on the outside you're like, man, Luka is a generational talent. He's in any conversation of currently the best player in the league when he's healthy. He just took the Mavericks to the NBA finals and it felt like they were building the thing around him. Now the 350 million dollar four year contract extension, that was out there for him, that's a real thing. And again, if you're running a business, you're like, who's your best employee? Well, it's this guy, but he's always late. You know, there's just a limit. It feels like it's going to get worse with age. If you look at Luka and you're honest with yourself, you're like, he's not the picture of fitness. He doesn't play defense. It's kind of amazing he's able to be this good despite the things he doesn't do. And if you're going to give a guy a four year, 350 million dollar contract, like once you give him that contract, that's kind of on you because that's fully guaranteed. Like you can get mad and stomp your feet as much as you want, but you still have to pay him whether you play them or you don't play. And if you think that is unique just to this. No, no, no. We say this on my show. So my show is the Doug Gottlieb Show. It runs after this one on most Fox Sports radio affiliates, the iHeartradio app. And we say this all the time about the collective bargain agreement in the NFL. You know, you get players who are complaining about how many games they're playing, hey, shouldn't have agreed to the contract. You know, you get owners that don't like some of the deals with, you know, the amount of time they're practicing, should agree to the contract. Players don't like the franchise tag, shouldn't agree to the contract. Franchise tag is a collectively bargained agreement anyway. It's a contract that a high enough percentage of the players, a majority of the players, agreed to. So it lives. And if you don't like it, well then this is not the business for you. Because that's something that collectively they've collectively bargained upon for a decade long contract. And the point is that the Hornets, the Mavericks, you could be as critical as you want of the trade. And my critique would be if you're going to trade away a guy and not take him to market, you have to get such an incredible value. Look, we're on in Southern California, so people in LA know this to be true. And I know the real estate market right now is a little bit flat. Right? Interest rates are High. Although they've dropped some. Okay, the. The. But the housing market is the perfect parallel because. And if you live in a market where this isn't the case, I'm sorry, you may have to catch up because it's a little bit different. I sold three houses in Newport beach when I lived there. All three of them we sold off market. The house was never listed. Was never listed. Like, well, how'd you sell the house? Like, it wasn't like, somebody just, hey, man, you want to. I'll give you $15 million for your house. Like, that's not how it works. But realtors do knock on your door, they do slide newspapers and paper into your envelope. Hey, I got a buyer is looking, and I have a tremendous realtor in. In Newport. I'll give him a shout out. My man John DeShawn. And they know everybody coming in, coming out, everybody. And so all you got to do is go like, hey, we're. We'd actually think about listing this thing. And then you talk about, what do you think it's worth? And like, you know what? I might have a client for you. And so again, there's three different homes, one people, one couple walks in. I want it. How much done. So you don't have to list it. You don't have to have an opening open house. You don't have to have a realtor open house. You don't have to take all the pictures, you don't have to do all the things. Okay. Sometimes you only have to do an inspection. People walk in, they're like, I want it as is. Here's the check. I don't know where people have this kind of money, but it does happen. Happens. But there is one caveat to it, and this is just a belief I have. I think most people would share. That belief is if you're going to buy something off market, and I'm not going to get into a bidding war, especially in a buy in a seller's market. Well, then you're going to have to pay. Maybe not above asking, but it's get. The asking has to be a little bit higher than one would expect. You know, like if it's a $800,000 house and you're like, well, what are you listing for? Like, I don't know. We'll take 825 for it. Like, this is not. You're not really have room to haggle. Because if you want to hang. Wait, listen. If you don't want to pay that price, that's fine. We'll just Take it to market and maybe you can get it for 750 or 725 or maybe it gets bid up and yet pay 900 for it. So to me, the biggest mistake is that if you're going to have a commodity like Luca that everyone concludes is what I mean, it's the best player that could ever, could possibly be traded at 25 years old, you know, in an expiring contract, like, that's a pretty good deal. And now, by the way, he can't get that supermax deal. So you're going to save some on some money to the new team as well. You got to get a little bit more than they got. You just have to figure out a way to get more. And if you, if the Lakers didn't want to get more, like, all right, Rob, listen, I know we got a great relationship, but I'm gonna have to take this to market. And when I take it to market, I don't, I don't know if just Anthony Davis and a couple other pieces, if that does. But the other side to it is if you, if you're honest with yourself and so many, so few people actually are honest with themselves, and you go, okay, why do you make the trade? Well, because he's not really in shape. He doesn't really play defense, and he consistently gets himself out of shape in the off season. And the defense has never really picked up and yet we get to the NBA Finals. So if anything, it kind of, it gives him, it empowers him. Like, hey, I didn't play much defense last year. We made the NBA Finals. Why are you yelling at me about it? If you watch last night, okay, and I get, he's still coming off of injury, it's on a new team, he's playing off the ball more. Whereas everything, everything, everything, everything was him with a ball screen in Dallas. Which, by the way, if the Lakers really want to remake themselves, they're worrying so much about finding a rim protector. You got to figure out a way to create ball screen opportunities for Luka. He's amazing at it. But if you watch last night, you would say, like, he's not very good shape and man, he didn't play ad defense. And somewhere Nico Harrison's sitting there going, what's the, what's the meme with. Oh, man, the meme with that guy.
Narrator
The.
Dallas Goddard
What's his face? That meme.
Capital One Bank Guy
Come on, dude.
LeVar Arrington
Well, give me some clues here.
Dallas Goddard
Give me some.
Capital One Bank Guy
Hold on now. Now I'm really having it. Having a tough day. Okay, who, what's the meme. He famous actor, dates women much younger than him.
Dallas Goddard
George Clooney.
Capital One Bank Guy
No, he's married. Leonardo DiCaprio on his couch with a beer, pointing at the screen. Right. Doing the, you know, looking at the.
Dallas Goddard
Screen from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. Yep.
Capital One Bank Guy
Yes. Yes, that one. What is that. What is that meme called? What would you. How would you describe that meme? When you want to search for that meme, what do you describe how it.
Dallas Goddard
Leo DiCaprio pointing at TV. I don't know.
Capital One Bank Guy
Yes, that's Nico last night. See that. That right there? That's the one. And then, you know, LeBron misses two shots at the end. And we're supposed to argue about, like sports radio is supposed to be. Who's going to take the game when he shot is LeBron. Is it Luka? And I just think those things organically take care of themselves. Like, LeBron had it going last night. He takes him. Eventually it's going to be Luka's team. But you got a lot of LeBron kind of like his space. It's his deal. Like, let him do his deal. And then once we get to the playoffs, we know who's going to.
Dallas Goddard
But, Doug, it's sports talk. So you doing the case by case thing, that's somewhere in the middle. That's far too rational for sports talk. So how about we narrow this down? Game 7 of a playoff series. Who do you want coach taking that shot?
Capital One Bank Guy
Like, it all depends.
Dallas Goddard
Yeah, it depends. That doesn't work. There's no more depends. You have to.
Capital One Bank Guy
There is, though, that, like, that's where sports talk is. The, the, the, the polarizing. Either, you know, either your. Because this is how sports talk works. If I don't think LeBron James is the greatest player of all time, I'm a hater. And I've somehow said he sucks. Whereas, you know, there's 450 NBA players right now. There's 8 billion people on the planet. They're the best of the best. The best. And again, the NBA is Exactly. For about 100 years, but really we're only paying attention in the past 40 years. And if I say he's the second or third best, that's not saying he sucks. That's saying I prefer Jordan. Honestly, in a game, I would have preferred Bird in his prime, probably Magic in his prime to LeBron. But LeBron's great. And his ability to longevity, he's amazing. He's awesome. I just like those guys in the short instance better. Again, I know that doesn't Work. I guess that doesn't work for. For some people. Sports radio. What would I do? I would this year. Again, it depends who's. Are they double teaming LeBron, they double teaming Luka, who's open, who's playing Well, I probably end up like again, if all things being equal, it would probably be Luca.
Dallas Goddard
That's a good. That's a good exercise. So they're both having a great game, they both have similar stats, and at the end you're just like, I want Luca. So that. That's the way to put it. I like that. So I'm going to hold you to that.
Capital One Bank Guy
Yeah. Because he's done it at the end of playoff games more recently than LeBron has done. LeBron has done it more often for more years in the playoffs. But it stands to reason that Luca, at 25 years old, having just taken a team the NBA finals last year, he's done it more recently. And he will be younger. And although he's not in shape now, if we were to get that deep into the NBA playoffs, he would be in the best shape of the year and I would. And they both. I mean, look, the thing about both of them is both incredible passers. So if you throw a second guy at him, they will find the open guy. But I would say Luca would be my guy.
Dallas Goddard
And it depends on the shot, too, right. Like last night, they needed a three. I mean, if we're rocky. Get you two easier than a three, right? Luca Luke is the better perimeter shooter.
Capital One Bank Guy
Yeah, yeah. I mean, like, look, LeBron had two really good looks. Those are two really good looks. He left them short, but those are two good looks. And at the time, he was, I think, four of nine from three. So whoever gets those, those looks, that's on the floor at the end. Dorian, Finney Smith or Gabe Vincent or if Rui had two wide open looks. Rui shot the ball poorly last night. Night. Like, those are good looks. A little deep, but yeah, of course, it depends upon the selection of the shot, where it comes in the shot clock, who it's against, how you're playing. All these things. We make these. We make this stuff up. Like, you know, it's like when the Ravens, when the Ravens lost in the playoffs, you know, people critical of the play calling, should they have given it to Derek Henry more. More often? Like. Yeah, but then when you turn the football over and you get behind and they're stacking the box, is that the. Is that the best way? Is that the best way? So Lakers lose all of the flaws with with Luca and some with LeBron on display. If we're fair about it, he's still a Luka was still a plus 13 despite the fact that he was like LeBron. His stats were way better. Was a minus 4, Luca a plus 13. He ends up with 14, 11 and 8 assists, did have 6 turnovers, was 518 from the floor and struggled to guard as Lamelo late in the game lit him up. But if you watch that game and you're fair about it, again, I wouldn't have traded Luka Doncic. No chance. But if you're fair about it, you go. He doesn't look like he's in shape and he ain't got anybody.

Jonas Knox
Yo. Surprise. It's your butts. Cavino and Rich. And for Colin on the herd becoming like a Friday tradition, huh?
Doug Gottlieb
You know I'm okay with this. Hey, I'm Cavino. That is Rich. And we are live from Union, New Jersey. We're here in Jersey 30 Jersey. Eating lots of pizza. Eating lots of Taylor ham sandwiches.
Jonas Knox
Why don't you tell the truth? We just got out of a meeting with Hal Steinbrenner Jr.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes, and he took my word serious. And it's like a holiday. We have lots to talk about. No more facial hair policies. Well, we'll explain for the New York Yankees. We're going to talk hockey today. What in the hell? Usually I say hockey schmocky. Not today plus, there's some stories about being starstruck. We got weekend hobnobbin, things you need to watch over the weekend. But I'm so excited about this New York Yankee story again. Covino and Rich in for Colin on the Herd. The number is 8, 7, 7. For the herd, we got super producer.
Jonas Knox
Danny G. Danny G. What's up, man?
Dallas Goddard
Yay.
Narrator
Happy Friday.
Doug Gottlieb
Happy Friday is right. Like I said, it's a celebration for baseball fans, for Yankee fans especially. And it's like, ding dong, we'll grow our beards.
Dallas Goddard
Grow our beards.
Doug Gottlieb
Grow our beards.
Jonas Knox
You said baseball fans. Only Yankees fans.
Doug Gottlieb
Oh, yeah.
Jonas Knox
No one cares except you guys.
Doug Gottlieb
But I think it's a great, great change in the right direction. And of course, we have big sexy Ryan back at the studios. Two on the ones and twos. And of course you, Fox Sports Radio Nation. Thanks again for hanging out with us. Let's get involved. Let's get it going. We are on site in Jersey because, well, we did an event yesterday, believe it or not, with Dallas Goddard, which.
Jonas Knox
By the way, poses a very interesting question. What happens when you start to become friendly with guys that are not on the team you root for?
Doug Gottlieb
I think there's a real simple answer to that, to be honest. Yeah. So Dallas Goner, super bowl champion of the Philadelphia Eagles. We had to do an event with him yesterday. And he's such a great dude, nice guy, real down to earth, super pumped about his win. Makes you pump for him. The answer is simple. I think you start to like players but still root for your team. I think that's okay. You could still root for your team. Rich is a lifelong 49ers fan, but you root for that player as a man, as an individual. It's like when your favorite player leaves the team, you don't abandon your favorite player. You still root for him a little bit.
Jonas Knox
It's true.
Doug Gottlieb
Keep your eye on him. But you, you keep your AL alliance and your allegiance to the team you root for. So it's really that, like, getting to know him. We've had him on our show a few times. We're going to get him on again. We spent the whole day with him yesterday. We met his girlfriend.
Dallas Goddard
Right.
Doug Gottlieb
Talked about life and the victory and what it's like to be in the locker room. You get to know the guy and you realize he's a down to earth, strapping young fella. You just get to root for him and appreciate him and you keep your eye on him. As simple as that.
Jonas Knox
You know what? Simple move on But I think back to when I was a little boy and as a Niners fan. When Montana left for the Chiefs, I didn't become a Chiefs fan, but there was a part of me that's like, unless they play the Niners, I'm certainly going to hope Cool Joe does well.
Doug Gottlieb
Exactly. Yeah. I get. So now we're rooting for him and he'll be on the show more and more often again. Covino and Rich. We're Normally on from 5 to 7 on the east, Monday through Friday, 2 to 4 on the west. Just search Covino and Rich at Covino and Rich on social media or call us now. 8 7, 7 for the herd. It's a pleasure to be here again. That's what brought us to the East Coast. We live in Los Angeles, but they said, hey, we need you to do some event with Dallas Goddard. Would you like to do it? We said yes. So since we were on the east, we said, let's go back to Jersey, say hi to the fam, stuff our faces with Taylor Hammond pizza and let's rock the Herd today.
Jonas Knox
Let me tell you, it's, it's very interesting because I feel like of all the shows on Fox Sports Radio and I'm not patting ourselves on the back because it's such a stupid story, but I feel like we were the league leaders in joking about the Yankees lame ass facial hair policy. Like we would often bring up young Dominican players, young Latino players, you know, around the league. Any young player for that matter who wants to clean shave in 2025, it's a lame ass look. Very few guys clean shave.
Doug Gottlieb
I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it this morning.
Jonas Knox
We got so many messages because again, we're the bozos that bring it up often. But let me read the press release from your dude, a guy that now runs your Los Yankees.
Doug Gottlieb
He's my dude. Today. Hal Steinbrenner put a statement out. My family, all my friends, so many people. I woke up, I was like, what in the hell am I dreaming? It really felt like, no way, this can't be real.
Jonas Knox
Statement from Yankees managing general partner Hal Steinbrenner. The memo is regarding alterations of Yankee facial hair policy.
Dallas Goddard
What?
Jonas Knox
In recent weeks I've spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees spanning several eras to elicit their perspectives on our long standing facial hair and grooming policy. The fact this is even a memo is hilarious to me and I appreciate their earned and varied feedback. These most recent conversations are an extension of ongoing internal dialogue that dates back several years. Ultimately, the final decision rests with me. And after great consideration as a Steinbrenner, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniform personnel to have well groomed beards. Moving forward, it is the appropriate time to move beyond the familiar comforts of our former policy.
Doug Gottlieb
It is. And what we said when they got Devin Williams is, I think change starts with one man. And I believe that he was the catalyst. And that one man, because you invest, what, eight point something million dollars a year for this guy to be the closer of your team. And intimidation role, really, you're closing the game. You're the closer of the New York Yankees, and you have this really intimidating, dominating beard that gives you this sense of confidence and makes you feel like a badass. And then you're forced to shave it. Now you look like a baby cherub on the mound. And pinstripes like you took away that intimidation factor. And Devin Williams is very outspoken. He wasn't disrespectful, but he was very outspoken on the fact that he hadn't shaved in years and that he felt very comfortable with his beard and more confident with his beard. So essentially, you're telling them to shave, taking away their confidence. That then becomes a counterproductive thing. And, you know, we mentioned our time with Dallas Goddard yesterday, Philadelphia Eagle, coincidentally. I said to him, just in random conversation, I said, hey, Dallas, he had a regular scruff going on, right? A regular 20, 25 scruff with some facial hair. I'm like, if the Eagles had a policy and they said you had a shave, how would you feel about it? How would the guys react? He's like, oh, man, that would. That would be terrible. He's like, nah, you would find, eventually you'd find somewhere else to play because that's just, you know, you got to think about the off season and just out and about and just how you feel about yourself. He's like, the young guys today, no way, man. I don't like that.
Jonas Knox
That.
Doug Gottlieb
That was his take on it. You hear how young people's. Young people talk about, you know, how they want to look when they're out there. It's about time. And again. I'm a Yankees fan, so I believe in tradition. But as we've said many times, sometimes tradition is making the same mistake over and over again. And how Steinbrenner said it, right now is the time. It's the perfect time. And the rule is, well groomed beards, meaning you can't show up up to work because it's work. You Know, you got to show up like a professional. You can't show up to work looking like Hobo Williams. You can't look like a hobo.
Jonas Knox
Can't look like a member of the 04 Red Sox.
Doug Gottlieb
Exactly. Which I always thought was a crappy look.
Jonas Knox
But work, let me tell you, it's. It's interesting. And I think 2025 is the right timing. You know, forget it's a Yankees.
Doug Gottlieb
It is. It's a timing thing.
Jonas Knox
A lot of these young players have more deals than ever with brands on social media. Tick tock, Instagram X.
Doug Gottlieb
They're do.
Jonas Knox
They're pimping more products than ever before. It's a different time. And I think it was the right move by Steinbrenner. And you and I were at breakfast getting some Taylor ham. Like you said, out here in New.
Doug Gottlieb
Jersey, it's not pork roll. And that that argument needs to end.
Capital One Bank Guy
Now.
Jonas Knox
I know people in Texas or LA or Chicago, bigger cities around the country, like, who cares about the Yankees facial hair? It's an ongoing joke that. That these dudes had a look like they were showing up in an accounting office shaving every day. But to the point now where you look back and say, how many Yankees would have looked different? And now are we guaranteed to get a bearded Aaron Judge like this year?
Doug Gottlieb
Without a doubt. Because in the off season. Yeah. That's how most of these young dudes are rocking it. In fact, if you look at us right now, we got a well groomed scruff going on. It's just the way of the world. You're gonna force these young dudes to rock a cornball mustache like your dad had. Get out of here.
Jonas Knox
I mean, not. Not to backtrack a week, but last Friday, we filled in for Colin and big sexy Ryan and Danny G. I believe I asked both of you. This came up literally a week ago because I said, yo, guys, when was the last time you shaved your face? And you guys said, years and years. Am I right?
Dallas Goddard
You are correct, sir. Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
For me, Danny G, it's been since.
Dallas Goddard
High school my senior year. Yeah.
Jonas Knox
So when you hear this policy, it is funny how we probably have talked about this stupid policy more than any other show so we could put it to rest. But it was crazy to wake up this morning and your phone is lit up like, oh, my God, I hope nothing bad happened. But we are synonymous with this stupid story. So I'm glad we got to fill in for Colin today.
Doug Gottlieb
But it is a bigger deal because so many people laughed at the Yankees because of that if you're not a Yankees fan, you still looked at it like, yo, man, that's the most outdated policy possible. You and your stupid Yankee rules. That's so dumb. You know, if I was a young player, I wouldn't want to play there. And as a result, I think it became an uncool place to play. Like what, Clean shaven in today's world? Like, I'd rather play for another team. Other teams are willing to pay you nowadays. So yeah, if there's another team willing to pay you and, and they're a contender and they're going to let you grow your facial hair and be who you want to be and be as flashy as you want to be and you can be comfortable in your own skin, you know, why wouldn't you choose that team? Yankees were going to lose talent as a result of this stupid rule that they held on to, to. And, and I say stupid from today's standards. Yeah, I, I understood it years ago. Like, hey, you show up to work as a professional, I get it. So I do like the compromise and I hate to be that guy. There's so many sports guys especially that were, like, I've been saying it, I've always told you I was the guy.
Jonas Knox
I don't want, I don't want to be that guy.
Doug Gottlieb
I don't want to be that guy. But I, I did say that it starts with one man. That man would be beat Devin Williams. And that it should be a compromise. And that's exactly what you got. They're allowed to have a well groomed beard. So they're not coming in looking like, like, yeah, like Kevin Millar, Johnny Damon or Old Man Winter. Right. You gotta have a well groomed beard. And I think it's a big, big move moving forward. I bet you it's a celebration in the locker room. And then it poses a lot of questions.
Jonas Knox
It's a little victory, right? No, no one looks like Justin Turner. But look at this. In Vegas, the Yankees over under went from 92 to 94 wins. Look at that. People are predicting the beards give them two more wins. Yeah. But interestingly enough, are we going to see every single Yankee rocking some type of stubble or facial hair? That's the Giancarlo.
Doug Gottlieb
Yes. I think you're going to see.
Jonas Knox
Think of Garrett Cole when he was an Astro, not a Yankee. Garrett Cole had long hair and a beard.
Dallas Goddard
Garrett Cole here.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm already starting, starting on my facial hair again.
Jonas Knox
Garrett Cole, I guarantee that goober Aaron Judge taking it back to My Houston.
Capital One Bank Guy
Roots a little bit of a mullet, too.
Doug Gottlieb
I'm not sure.
Jonas Knox
Aaron Judge definitely going to be having a beard on opening day. And it was Verdugo, former Yankee, who's a free agent still, I believe, said, yeah, I just want to go play for a team where I could wear my jewelry, grow my beard, and be me. So maybe there was a catalyst there, too, where they're like, listen, he didn't work out for us, but. But you know when companies you work for, when you leave or they fire you or you quit, they're like, can.
Capital One Bank Guy
You take an exit survey?
Jonas Knox
And you're like, yeah, no, thanks. But they want you to take an exit survey on the way out. Like, what did you like about our company?
Doug Gottlieb
What didn't you.
Jonas Knox
They got a public exit survey from Verdugo, and his exit survey was, I played for the franchise with the most history in Major League Baseball, and I hated it.
Doug Gottlieb
Well, any place that you work, take it to a real life situation for everybody listening, where they won't let you be you and you can't do you. There's a lot of places that hire you, right, because they like you. Then when you get there, they change you to do it their way. So now you're out of your comfort zone and you can't be 100% your best. In a weird way, that matters and translates into baseball. You're probably thinking, big deal, it's facial hair. You know, imagine if they forced you to wear a stupid haircut or a certain type of facial hair at your profession. Again, I think it would take you out of your game. You would feel weird about it. You're like, this isn't me.
Jonas Knox
I mean, we don't need to harp on this. Like Bryce Harper, who, by the way, would look weird without facial hair.
Doug Gottlieb
Exactly.
Jonas Knox
I don't want to harp on this, but Danny G. Just one quick more question for the room. I've never seen you not wear a hat. What if Fox Sports was like, oh, yes, Daniel. Danny, we, we. You can't wear a hat anymore. That would aggravate you.
Dallas Goddard
I have some stylish do rags at home.
Jonas Knox
No, no, do rags as well, Danny. You just have to show your head.
Doug Gottlieb
You feel like we call them don't rags here at the office. Respectfully.
Dallas Goddard
Then I would shave my dome and get a tattoo on the top of my bald head.
Jonas Knox
Ryan, let me ask you. Big sexy Ryan, you got. You got a cool ass, like, you know, grizzly beard. Imagine, like Ryan, you, J. Ryan would go from looking like James Harden to James soften.
Doug Gottlieb
Yeah, he would. And it's a confidence killer.
Jonas Knox
That is a confidence killer. You look cool with your beard. And I know some guys, like, really, who cares about a beard? I bet you confidence and how good you feel about yourself comes with your appearance and it's on your face. So there's a lot of guys that are like, yeah, I would look like a baby little boy, clean shaven. So think about that.
Doug Gottlieb
Think about that. And also think about this. There will be people that still show up clean shaven. And that's going to be interesting because you're like, that's the guy who's okay with it. And then when you read what Hal Steinbrenner said, he said he got varied opinions. So there were people that were like, no, I think we should stick with the tradition, Hal. Right. There were people that were probably on the side of keeping things the way they were. And hold, you know, George would be rolling over in his grave right now if you. I think George would be happy about this. You know, who's mad to evolve? As we say all the time. And we quote our pal Gary Vaynerchuk, innovate or die. And it was becoming a very, very dated rule. It made a team that I root for feel a little corny after a while. And I think it is a bigger day than people realize.
Jonas Knox
Yo, I'm just, I'm looking at some of our feedback. Our boss hit us up with a link. Someone has already done images of Yankees with different hairstyles and beards.
Doug Gottlieb
That's another thing, Rich. Like, how do you think the people feel? Like, who had to live by these policies like a Glabor Torres, right? Who his whole career with the Yankees had to show up like a little baby boy. And now, you know, he's a tiger, he's already got the facial hair going on, but he's like, oh, so now they lift it. You know, it's like he just missed the cuddle.
Jonas Knox
Think of any social issue right where, where you grew up and they didn't allow something and now they do. Like, for all we know, Dom Mattingly and Ron Gid, you're really pissed.
Doug Gottlieb
Like, yeah, they're like, he had a lightning.
Jonas Knox
He's like, I could have had a beard.
Doug Gottlieb
Exactly. Like all the players from yesteryear. But look, if you're a non Yankees fan, I get it, you don't care that much. But this is a big deal. Change is a good thing. And for the first time, you're going to see Yankees showing up, you know, With a well groomed beard, not just a goofy mustache. Your thoughts? That's our take on it. And again, I hate to be the show that said we told you, but we did say a compromise was, was inevitable. Inevitable and coming soon. And today was the day.
Jonas Knox
Well, hey, your thoughts at 8-7-7 for the herd. If you want to chime in. Most interactive show on Fox Sports Radio at Covino and Rich. I actually made Covino give me his initial reaction this morning before we went on the air. And I. He was actually pretty fired up. So you could check that out because.
Doug Gottlieb
It'S about time, Rich. It really is. It's about time. But it's also the perfect time. And I know this sounds like, like a stereotype of sorts, but you're right. As baseball grows into more of an international game, forget about the fact that it's 2025, right?
Narrator
Yeah.
Doug Gottlieb
It's an international game. You expect these young Latino players, these Dominican superstars to want to go and play for a team like the Yankees and shave. Something that sort of identifies them.
Capital One Bank Guy
No.
Doug Gottlieb
You know what I mean? Like, it sounds silly, but it's not. That's how they look. That's how they feel confident.
Jonas Knox
Especially now in 2025 when this younger generation's all bound about being an individual and I want to be me and blah, blah, blah like that. There's conformity is, you know, not a thing people are down with anymore at all. So it's the right move. Congrats to the Yankees. I'm a mess fan.
Doug Gottlieb
But, but you know what? It also not only the pressure that the players and the young people were putting on the Yankees and they were feeling the heat from social media and the banter and our show, of course, we've been talking about it for a long time.
Jonas Knox
Like I said. And you're meeting with Hal this morning.
Doug Gottlieb
My meeting with Hal, you know, I, I was like, I was pounding my fist. I'm like, listen, Hal, I'm serious about this.
Jonas Knox
Flew into New Jersey for this.
Doug Gottlieb
Look, as a vato local here, I'm telling you, we don't want to completely shave. It's 2025. I think the Yankees are also making a statement and I think we're the first to probably say it. They're feeling the heat.
Dallas Goddard
Feel the heat.
Doug Gottlieb
And they know they have to compete and they're thinking, look, we have to be the place to be.
Jonas Knox
And there's no reason for anyone to want to turn away from this.
Doug Gottlieb
There's no reason why anyone should choose to be a Met or Dodger or any other high market team or other team that would allow this. We're the Yankees and if we're going to compete with these other teams, we have to make this adjustment.
Narrator
Some people just know they could save hundreds on car insurance by checking Allstate First.
Capital One Bank Guy
Like you know to check for the.
Narrator
Nearest bathroom first before the game starts.
LeVar Arrington
Now you're heading in the wrong direction and it sounds like your team's taking the lead. Checking first is smart, so check Allstate first for a quote that could save you hundreds.
Narrator
You're in good hands with Allstate. Savings vary subject to terms, conditions and availability. Allstate Fire and Casualty Insurance Company and.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd - "Best of the Week on The Herd" (Released February 22, 2025)
Hosted by: LeVar Arrington and Jonas Knox (interim hosts filling in for Colin Cowherd)
Produced by: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
Episode Overview: In this episode of "The Herd," interim hosts LeVar Arrington and Jonas Knox engage in a robust discussion covering the recent changes to the NBA All-Star Weekend, the evolving landscape of player personalities within the NBA, and an in-depth analysis of quarterback dynamics in the NFL with guest analyst Pete Prisco. The conversation is enriched with critical insights, personal anecdotes, and expert opinions, making it a compelling listen for sports enthusiasts.
Time Stamp: [03:07]
The episode kicks off with a heated debate about the recent changes to the NBA All-Star Weekend. The hosts express disappointment over the new format, which, in their view, dilutes the event's former glory and fan engagement.
Dallas Goddard [03:07]: "They was tweaking on NBA All Star Weekend."
LeVar Arrington [03:36]: "People are not real thrilled with the current format."
Jonas Knox [03:44]: "It's just not the same. The new segments feel forced and lack the energy they once had."
Key Points Discussed:
Dunk Contest Concerns: The inclusion of players with limited NBA experience has been criticized for lacking star power. The hosts reminisce about past dunk contests featuring memorable performances by iconic players like Kenny Skywalker, whose aerial acrobatics made a lasting impact.
Dallas Goddard [07:21]: "The dunks were phenomenal. They weren't just good; they were game-changers."
Overcomplicated Show Segments: Attempts to infuse comedy and other non-sporting elements into the All-Star Weekend have fallen flat, leading to a lackluster experience for fans.
LeVar Arrington [06:24]: "The new segments were just a fiasco. Too much going on and not enough value for the fans."
Relevance and Timing Issues: The hosts argue that the NBA has yet to find a way to make All-Star Weekend as relevant and engaging as it once was, especially when compared to other sports' marquee events.
LeVar Arrington [08:22]: "The timing of it all is off. The NBA needs to rethink when and how they present these events to maximize engagement."
Time Stamp: [13:01]
A significant portion of the discussion centers on the diminishing distinctiveness of NBA players' personalities, which historically contributed to the league's popularity and cultural impact.
Dallas Goddard [13:01]: "We used to know players not just for their skills but for who they were off the court. That's changing."
Key Points Discussed:
Lack of Iconic Personalities: The hosts lament that modern NBA players lack the unique personalities that made stars like Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley, and Jason Williams household names.
Dallas Goddard [17:36]: "You have so many characters from the past who were more than just players. They were entertainers, personalities. Where are those today?"
Impact on Branding and Fan Engagement: Without strong personalities, the league struggles to create memorable brands and maintain deep connections with fans.
Greg Tuohy [16:20]: "Player personalities are crucial for branding. Without them, the NBA risks becoming just another sports league without a unique identity."
Fantasy Football and Gambling Influences: The rise of fantasy sports and gambling has decentralized fan focus, reducing the emphasis on individual player identities in favor of statistical and betting interests.
Dallas Goddard [18:19]: "Fantasy leagues and betting have shifted the focus. Fans are more interested in stats than the stories behind the players."
Time Stamp: [23:23]
The conversation shifts to the NFL, featuring guest Pete Prisco, senior NFL columnist for CBS Sports. Together, they delve into the complexities surrounding quarterback contracts, team management, and the future prospects of key players.
Pete Prisco [27:28]: "Joe Burrow has the talent to win multiple Super Bowls, but contract negotiations are becoming a hurdle."
Key Points Discussed:
Contract Negotiations and Extensions: The difficulty teams face in securing long-term deals with star quarterbacks without overpaying or jeopardizing team chemistry.
Greg Tuohy [27:50]: "Negotiating contracts for quarterbacks like Burrow requires balancing fair compensation with team salary caps and future flexibility."
Impact of Key Players on Team Performance: How retaining or losing star quarterbacks like Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert, and Dak Prescott can significantly influence a team's success trajectory.
Greg Tuohy [29:36]: "If you lose a quarterback like Burrow, the Bengals could struggle to maintain their competitive edge, impacting season performance."
Team Management and Organizational Decisions: Critique of certain NFL organizations' management practices, including poor hiring decisions and inadequate support for star players.
Greg Tuohy [32:20]: "Organizations like the Jacksonville Jaguars have suffered under poor management, leading to a decline in performance and fan support."
Player Development and Support Systems: The importance of providing robust support systems for quarterbacks to thrive both on and off the field.
Pete Prisco [27:29]: "Supporting quarterbacks with the right coaching and resources is essential for their development and, by extension, the team's success."
Notable Quotes with Timestamps:
Dallas Goddard [25:44]: "The tag removes the irrational approach to player contracts."
Greg Tuohy [29:11]: "Tagging players is a temporary fix; teams need sustainable strategies for player retention."
Pete Prisco [32:22]: "Leadership within the front office is pivotal. Hiring the right general manager can turn a team's fortunes around."
Time Stamp: [32:09]
The hosts and guest analyst critique the management practices of various NFL teams, emphasizing the consequences of poor decision-making on team performance and player morale.
Greg Tuohy [32:37]: "Urban Meyer's tenure is a textbook example of how management decisions can derail a team's success."
Key Points Discussed:
Case Study: Jacksonville Jaguars: Examining the team's struggles under Trent Balky's management and the fallout from hiring contentious figures like Urban Meyer.
Greg Tuohy [32:37]: "When Balky was in charge, the Jaguars were the worst-run organization, leading to poor performance and lost fan trust."
Economic Pressures on Teams: How financial constraints and salary cap limitations force teams into difficult decisions regarding player contracts and acquisitions.
LeVar Arrington [33:07]: "Teams are constantly juggling budgets, making it challenging to retain top talent without compromising other areas."
Future Outlook: Strategies for NFL teams to improve management practices, focusing on hiring competent executives and fostering a positive organizational culture.
