The Volume now it's time for this week's Redeem team member, brought to you by Hulu's Chad Powers. This week it's Jake Moody, the Bears kicker released by the Niners after having a rough Week 1. On Monday, Jake got redemption. Four field goals, including the game winner against the Commanders, Chad Powers. Now streaming with new episodes Tuesday on Hulu and Hulu on Disney plus for bundle subscribers terms apply. All right, instant reaction. Listen, The Bears won 25, 24. It's a road win for the Chicago Bears and they just don't do that very much. So they beat the Raiders on the road, right, with a block kick and they beat Washington despite a 3, 0 turnover advantage. They needed a Jake Moody 38 yard field goal to win. I mean, here's all the positives. The Bears offensive line did a great job tonight creating massive running lanes for DeAndre Swift. DeAndre Swift was the star of the show. Had over 160 total yards, could have been about 170 and a touchdown. You know, Caleb Williams was good enough. Still misses too many throws you got to make in the NFL consistently, he's not as accurate as Jaden Daniels, but he didn't make that big mistake or two that Jaden Daniels did, including that late fumble where Washington was going for the win. And you know what I mean? That's the NFL. You can't make mistakes. These three, four, five minute left, these big drives, that's the game. Justin Herbert makes a big play or Baker Mayfield makes a big play and you win these games. When a quarterback like Jaden Daniels gets a bad handle, you lose those games. And the Bears defense pounced on it. Montez Sweatt created a fumble early, getting a big hand in there and punching the ball out. So I thought overall there were so many positives. Again, this is a franchise that can't win on the road, that hasn't had a quarterback throw for 4,000 yards. And to go on the road, the Bears had much better energy in this game, especially in the first half. I mean, Chicago came out 13 nothing, lead totally dialed in. You know, you're disappointed because you're settling for field goals. You go on the road, big spot, standalone game. Bears don't win these games. That's not a game the Bears win. So you just take it. You take the 25, 24 win. You know, Jake Moody has a kick blocked, otherwise you'd have kind of thought it was, you know, most of the time, 38 yards, you're like, it's good. But you know, he kicked the ball low, very low directory and it got blocked. And Jake Moody's history in San Francisco was at best spotty. So there's a lot of drama at the end, but there's so many good things to Take out of this, the run game. There were huge, huge holes all night. I thought Ben Johnson's play calling. A couple of really nice screens dialed up in crucial situations. Bears had too many penalties. Bears weren't great on third down, but it's the road, you know, again, Ben and Caleb have played together, you know, have six games together. You're winning, I mean, just, you won the game. And, you know, it was Washington that made the crucial mistakes. The crucial, you know, red zone pick, the fumble. It was Washington making those mistakes. Jaden Daniels almost pulled it out. He's a tremendous player. Accurate, you know, he's just kind of a n accurate. Drake Mays got that. Drake May is just a naturally accurate thrower of the football. Justin Herbert has that and some guys do, and some guys labor over it a little bit more. Mahomes is largely very accurate. Not everybody is. It takes work for some guys. They got to get their mechanics cleaned up. But you just get so much horsepower and so much talent with Caleb that you know he's going to be a 64% completion guy. Maybe he's not going to be a 68% completion guy, but he made some nice throws over the middle of the field, which is tough for young quarterbacks. But I was just kind of blown away by the first half energy of the Bears. Three turnovers advantage, really aggressive defense. And what can you say about the offensive line? That's about as good an effort on the road for the Bears offensive line. I mean, it just, they haven't had a lot of them, but you know, they went and got Tooney and Drew Dahlman and Jonah Jackson and it felt like it's starting to pay dividends. It feels like that offensive line, they spent some real money on it, you know, and my rule in the NFL is find your quarterback, hire a great coach, find your quarterback and protect your quarterback. Then eventually go get a defensive lineman that disrupts theirs. Overall, I just thought you just, you can't gripe too much. Road win, Bears better energy, better consistent run game, fewer mistakes. You can live with a penalties again. Some of the operational stuff, it was, it was better. How about that? I've used that word a lot. You just take it. You don't, you don't worry about the margins too much. You know, you watch the NFL, I watch the NFL. They're just those games like Denver was awful against the Jets. They won. Fly home from London. Great. Now you get to go home and play the New York Giants. You just take that. Seattle should have wrapped up their game with Jacksonville earlier. They didn't. They won. Five hour flight home. Thanks for flying United. So that's going to be a nice Bears flight home. The other thing about Chicago this year, you know, with Matt Eberfluss, they just couldn't score in the first quarter. And I think now and like if you take a lead in the NFL, I don't know what the number is. I think it's like 63%, 65%. The team that scores first wins. And you know, they're just a much better opening drive team. They're a much better first quarter team. They're not playing from behind. And I felt like this entire game Chicago deserved to win. I mean what was that hokey call where the left tackle, he was lined up too far back. I mean that felt. That's a weak call. I mean to me when it comes to officiating, stuff is either clear and definitive or don't blow the whistle. It's absolute, it's clear, it's definitive or don't blow it. When you're looking at a still shot or a replay and the replay official for ESPN can't, can't decipher it, can't figure it out. Just save it, just get out of the way of the game. So I think you, you know, I'm looking over all my notes here for the Bears. I'd like to see a little bit more Loveland and Luther Burden. I kind of feel like they're lost in the offense. DJ Moore got looks but he got banged up. You know, it's just one of those things, you know, Burden and love learn young and Caleb's knows, you know, he knows his guys. You know, he's familiar with some of these older. So there's a lot of moving parts here. You got a couple of rookies, you got new offensive linemen, you got a new coach. You know, I think we just have to, you got to kind of accept like there's just a lot of moving parts for the Bears. The bye week helped. I mean I think you saw the bye week, the advantage of it with an offensive coach, just big, big Bears energy. I mean they really give Ben Johnson and the staff credit. They came out hair on fire, helmets on fire and The Bears win 25 to 24. Jake Moody, who knew? So the Atlanta Falcons in the game finish before the Bears commanders game was finished, beat Buffalo 24 to 14. You know my takeaway is Buffalo's defense doesn't have a playmaker. Michael Penix looked comfortable. I mean 20 of 32, 250 yards. Bijan Robinson averaged nine yards a carry. Drake London had 10 catches, a touchdown, 16 yards a catch. Bottom line, when you come into a game and you were looking for Pennocks to be comfortable, was Drake London to have a big night? Was Bijan Robinson to deliver a couple big plays? Did. Buffalo's got two problems. Mike Vrabel has been coaching the Patriots in six games he's already in first place. What does that tell you? Sean McDermott has had Josh Allen for all these years and there's always a hole in the team. I mean McDermott's solid, but I mean Mike Vrabel with Drake May who's still sort of refining his craft, walk in, they're already in first place. And I just feel like Michael Pennix was comfortable. Drake May back to back losses, he was comfortable. So. And you know when you pay the quarterback big money, you have to, you're going to have weaknesses. But Andy Reid tends to solve and find ways to solve the weaknesses. I mean Sean McDermott, you know, outside of the opening drive, they don't have enough of a receiving arsenal. You know, they just don't. Again, I want they fall behind after the opening drive. The offense sputters. Josh Allen has a couple of turnovers. They're not generating things on the perimeter. Their pass rush is hit and miss. Michael Penix looks like another hit for a young quarterback. He throws a beautiful ball. I always said he was a bigger, stronger tua, just a bigger, stronger arm. Helps that he's playing in a dome. I mean it's easier to quarterback, for a young quarterback to be in dome weather or warm weather than cold weather. But Pennix with time to throw, dialed it up tonight. I mean, Drake London was doing whatever he wanted to do. Bijan Robinson had that huge longest run from scrimmage this year. So I just, I mean, listen, I always have a rule. Turn the sound off and watch the game. Buffalo outside of Josh Allen does not look intimidating. Their perimeter weapons average. The secondary average. Pass rush is kind of hit and miss. And you know, I'm watching guys like Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan, like Kyle Shanahan's lost almost all his major weapons and they're winning or going toe to toe with Tampa. And I'm watching Jim Harbaugh with a third string running back and three offensive linemen go on the road and win late. And here's Sean McDermott going down to quirky, inconsistent Atlanta. And the Falcons offensively kind of did what they wanted to. I mean, you know, the game plan was get it to Drake London and let's get Bijan Robinson cooking. Let me look at the total yards for the Falcons here. The Falcons had 443 yards, 6.7 yards of play, 22 first downs, win time of possession. I mean, it's, it's. I mean, even Josh Allen and the Bills had more penalties than young Michael Pennix. So, I mean, I think there's these markets that, you know, like a Pittsburgh or a Buffalo, they don't like firing their coaches. You know, they're loyal sometimes to a fault, but, you know, it creates continuity and that's always a pretty good thing. You don't want to be the jets and the giants running through GMs and coaches, I guess. But I watch Buffalo after watching Kansas City the last couple of weeks. Buffalo's not competing with Kansas City. Kansas City's offense, once they get Rasheed Rice back. I mean, they're scoring 31 a game now against, you know, competition. I mean, Detroit is a really good football team up and down the field. Buffalo's not stopping that. I mean, just turn the sound down and watch Buffalo take out Josh Allen. You just. There's not enough weapons and now they're, they're losing the good teams. New England's a good team. New England feels like a playoff team lost at home. You know, Atlanta may not be a playoff team. Almost at 500 yards, totally. Michael Penix was totally comfortable. So, I mean, these windows, you know, there was about a two or three year window with Buffalo when they were, you know, they were paying Josh, but they still had a pretty good secondary. And maybe it's closed, but they, they just, they don't look like Kansas City. They don't have the roster. Detroit or Philadelphia. I don't know if I was a Buffalo Bills fan. New stadium will be cool, but it feels like Mike Vrabel and the Patriots in six games have taken back the division. I mean, that's discouraging, is it not? And again, Sean McDermott's capable, but I just kind of feel like Andy Reid does a much better job to solve the offensive line issues or the run game issues or the wide receiver issues. The entire league is about solving problems because of the salary cap. Nobody's got a perfect team. And when you get a perfect roster like Philadelphia, you don't get the offensive coordinator. Right? I mean, it's, it's, there is no perfect team in this league. You know, the 70 Steelers were a perfect team. Joe Montana's Niners, not a lot of holes. Everybody's got an issue. Everybody does Buffalo just. I mean, are they a top 10 team right now? I'm not sure if they are. I'm really not sure if they are. Tampa Bay 30, San Francisco 19 right now. Baker Mayfield. Think about this. They average 7.3 yards of play. No Mike Evans. No Chris Godwin. Ibuka gets hurt. No Bucky Irving. The leading pass catcher was K D, who by the way is a nice tight end out of Washington. Sterling Shepard. Tez Johnson. Tez had a Great catch. I mean, I think Baker has to be your MVP at this point. I mean, he had a. He had a magical, emotional, magical scramble for a first down. I mean, listen, San Francisco's all beat up, but, I mean, Tampa's going to Seattle and winning. Tampa's in the bay and winning. I think they're as good as anybody in the league right now. And I think Baker's my mvp.
A
Yeah, to me, I mean, their ceiling rests on those guys being healthy, because if they are healthy, they'd have a chance to beat anybody because they're offense. I mean, how potent it will be with those three wide receivers. Pretty incredible story. I mean, the Cleveland Browns, who have that long history of having a million quarterbacks, finally get a guy and draft him number one overall. And John Dorsey was right, but it didn't quite look right immediately. And now he's fulfilling. Like I'm the number one overall quarterback. The farvee in qualities, the moxie, the passes. Colin, last year it was like, you know, Baker Mayfield's a really good player. This guy's like a top 10 quarterback to right now. He's one of the best players in the league, like MVP or not. I mean, he's just on a weekly basis, one of the best players in the league. And for a smaller quarterback, he's an excellent pocket passer.
C
Great.
A
Feels like he has no trouble seeing. I don't know if he finds angles. Maybe it's just some instinctive quality that he has. I mean, you know, Purdy, who didn't play today, another smaller quarterback, struggles a little bit, throw over the middle of the field. Obviously, Baker's arm strength. Yeah, he's just playing at an elite level. I mean, he's 25 to 1, Colin to start the season. And I looked before this, I think like Thursday or Friday, he was down to 8 to 1. I would imagine he will continue to rise up into the Josh Allen category as the season goes.
C
So I. When I picked the Niners, despite an easier than average schedule to finish second or third in their division, I said, I'll take the Rams and the Seahawks to win the division. I said, I love the coach. Purdy's good enough. This is an old, brittle roster. You looked it up today. How much money is not playing right now due to injury?
A
Well, they gave three contracts this off season. Brock Purdy, you know, in guaranteed, guaranteed money, got $180 million. He's played two games and been is injured now. And who knows when he's coming back. They gave Fred Warner and George kittle A combined $96 million, so a total of $277 million. And obviously, Fred Warner today shatters his ankle. Kittle has been out since early on in that first game. And Purdy, again, if you told me over under right now, does he play five games this season? I probably take the under. So they gave $277 million to, I mean, two hall of Famers in Warren Warner and Kittle and their starting quarterback. And none of it, like, you just can't overcome that, Colin. And that's not even counting. I mean, Nick Bosa, who, you know, when he's healthy and playing like he was this season, one of the best players in the league, who's gone. So it's like Ayuk's nowhere to be found. Ricky Pearsall, who looked excellent early in the season, is just gone. Injured knee. Like, I. I've never seen anything like this on. On a weekly basis.
C
The.
A
The constant. Just guys careers are altered. Not like, hey, he, you know, he rolled an ankle or dinged an elbow. It's like, no, his career is altered. It's. It's almost unfathomable because now we have a history, right? Seven of the last eight years, they have been one of, if not the most injured team in the league. And you look around the league and you go, a bunch of injuries. And Fred Warner had nothing to do with, like, training or whatever. Someone falls on his ankle, on his ankle from behind. But the amount and the amount of money they've invested, it's one thing when it's kind of random guys, it's critical, elite hall of Famer guys that set the contract standard at their position. What are you supposed to do, you know? I don't know.
C
Yeah, I mean, it's one of those things where they've missed on just enough draft picks and they've hit on several. Ricky Piersol, you know, when healthy is really good. Again, their receiving core over the last three years, it's never healthy. I mean, just ever. No, but, I mean, I'll give the Niners credit. Tampa is a really good team, and they shouldn't with Mac Jones be this close. And it was a very, very close game throughout. It was one of those games where I felt like Tampa was the better team. Just, they were healthier when Ibuka went out. And I'm thinking, jesus, they don't have anybody to work with. And it's seven and a half yards of play. So I think. And I. I also think, you know, Baker will say I'm the same Guy I've always been. But all of us are human, all of us learn from, you know, he was pissed when Cleveland got rid of him. He didn't like the way. I mean, not just Cleveland, but Carolina. Right. Like, like, yeah. I mean, and then, I mean, LA had Stafford, but I mean, you start looking around, it's, it's. He got kicked to the curb multiple times, like Mac Jones, similarly. But I think we all know Baker's got more talent than Mac. But it's one of those things where, you know, it's, it's, it's when you, you know, lost your radio job, you're not a bitter person. But that stuff, I mean, the Dallas Carolina game today, what were they, what were they calling that game? That was the Rico Dowdle revenge game. He was a monster. I think professional athletes are like attorneys or in any profession that deals in conflict. That shit is jet fuel for Baker. I don't think there's any question it's helped.
A
And I'm totally with you. Like his comments, you know, they used to call me cocky, abrasive, and now they say moxie and dog. Well, Baker, you, you, you, one, you're a way better player now. Yeah. And two, you, you definitely feel a little more calm. And also you're out of a chaotic situation. Like there are a lot of different factors, but I'm with you. I mean, I think any human worth their salt uses motivation and as you mature, you don't let it show as much. And I think that's a good example with Baker. He was cut from, if I remember correctly, in the middle of the season after he was benched by the Panthers. That's how he ended up on the Rams on that Thursday night game. So I just think that one, Baker's always had the arm strength.
C
Yes.
A
And when you watched him at Oklahoma, he was not a one year wonder. Three years dominated. And by the time he left, they were going toe to toe, remember with the Georgia team in the Rose bowl, they easily could have won that game. I thought he was an elite prospect. I thought he was like a more mobile Drew Brees. But you know, part of the reason Dorsey liked him was like the, the bravado, the, the kind of the farvee. And I don't know, it's not fake confidence, but just belief of like, I'm just going to pull this out, even though sometimes you won't. And it shows much better when you're playing well. And you know, in Cleveland, I mean, it's pretty clear no one overcomes that that place, you see the list, they're paying like nine quarterbacks right now. Like that's just. I know they got two Ivy League guys running it, but they are the joke of the league in terms of like these two Ivy League guys that constantly lose. They can't find a quarterback. Like I'm watching Kyle and Robert Sala with nobody compete.
C
Think the New York jets maybe the worst coach team I've ever seen. First of all, the organization is so bad. Aaron Rodgers with the Steelers looks good and competent and under control. With the jets he looked old and it was chaotic. He's the same guy. So just. And by the way, Pittsburgh over the last eight years can't get offense right. But Aaron goes from the jets to Pittsburgh and offensively at times, tone deaf organization and he looks really, really good. But I want to talk about the Jets. So Denver beats the Jets 13 to 11. And Denver played like crap. Bo Nix was awful in the second half. But you know what? Kansas City made a living last year out of playing poorly and winning. There is value in going overseas playing poorly and winning 13 to 11. I mean, they had a safety in the end zone, there's a holding. I mean Denver did everything wrong and it's why the NFL is so popular. Denver was so much better than the jets and won 13 to 11. But at the end of the first half, the Jets Aaron Glenn calls for a fake punt. They convert it and the next play he runs the ball. Well. Why would you take that risk and then not go into your two minute offense? I've never seen anything like it. Kurt Warner was incredulous. He and Eisen just were like laughing. And then at the end of the game when Justin Fields was atrocious. And one thing we know, Justin Fields does not see the field well. They have him going on deep drops when they can kick a 62 yard field goal or go to Tyrod Taylor in the second half at some point. Tyrod's a pro. Yeah, they don't go to Tyrod Taylor. They don't elect to kick to field goal. And on that last drive, it's deep drops by. Listen, you need like 8 yards to get into field goal range. If you have to run, do whatever you have to do. But quick drops, tight end, you know, a quick drag route, anything. I think the jets are the worst coach team in the league and I feel bad, but there are coaches. Rich Cotai, you're just overwhelmed. Freddy Kitchens, it's, it's just too big of an assignment. My interpretation is the jets can't do anything right. They are officially the worst franchise in the league. And I'm including Tennessee.
A
Yeah, I mean, I would also include the gm. To me, it's a tandem deal. They give Sauce all that money. They, they kind of invest in the team. Justin fields to give $40 million over two years based on his resume was insanity. I mean, some of these guys, the 49ers got Mac Jones for two years, $7 million at no point in time during their career. Mac Jones dealt with Belichick and not like the. In the prime Belichick. The Belichick we see now. Honestly, it's kind of a reflection of like actually Max. Pretty impressive that he was able to overcome kind of that mess. Justin Fields can't play within the pocket. He has no feel. Now the, the jets offensive line is also regressing. They were getting beaten all game long. So you factor in their offensive tackles. Couldn't block the edges. He has no feel for the pocket. I mean, they could have had 50 sacks a day. It felt like he was going to get sacked on every drop back. I'm with you calling these long drop backs, but it gets back to investing in him in the first place. That's. That's insanity. If anything, just take a deep breath, you know, higher sign, same thing, a Gardner mint. You just take it. But to give him two years and $30 million guaranteed based on what? He got benched the previous year, which we could argue if he should have or not. But even before that, like that was insane. I mean, they are this franchise. They feel a little, you know, kind of like the Raiders five, six, seven years ago. I mean, really, really rudderless. And the problem is their owner has unlimited money. They have a high priced team. It's not like they have some young. I mean, they're paying Garrett Wilson a lot. They're paying Sauce Garden a lot. They're playing Queen and Williams a lot. They've invested a lot of first round picks in different guys and high picks. They've invested. It's not like their quarterback's cheap, you know, I mean, they, they are, they're a disaster. They, the Broncos got really lucky because Bo Nicks. Now, listen, I do agree with you. It's hard to go overseas in general. The Broncos played the Eagles last week and they took all their stuff with them and then flew to London right after. So they've been gone forever, but three completions in the second half. Yeah, for, you know, a first round pick, a bunch of, you know, good wide receivers and a high level offensive coordinator. And even Bo Nick said after the game, like, we got no rhythm. They got very lucky. They're playing an inept team because they lose that game if they're just playing like the Saints.
C
Well, I was thinking about this. If we go Back to the 2024 quarterback draft class, Jaden Daniels, number one. Drake May has emerged as number two.
A
He looks good.
C
Bo Nix today is three. Caleb's on his heels at four. I won't even count J.J. mcCarthy. Penix is five. I still think Pennix has a chance to work, but I think Bo Nix, he's had some really bad halfs. Not Philadelphia Eagles bad halfs, but pretty bad. And I, I'll say this, between Mims and Franklin and Harvey and Evan Ingram had a big catch on a fourth down. Denver's got really nice personnel. I'll argue this all day long. I think it's a top. I think the Broncos have a top five roster. Bulls@ left tackle. They have real players. So I think it's, it's, it's. I mean, Bo is 19 of 30, 175 yards, a touchdown, no picks, runs very, very well. But he missed a couple of deep balls. He does not throw the deep ball particularly well. He' but it feels like to me, on the deep ball, he has no touch on the deep ball. He just lets it go. And maybe because he didn't throw a ton of them, he's a pretty good intermediate thrower. He's exceptional under 8 to 10 yards, he's very accurate. He just doesn't throw a good deep ball. And Sean Payton has receivers who can get open deep. So I think it's a. I think Sean Payton privately is frustrated.
A
How could he not be? I also think he's kind of caught because he should use his legs more. Yeah, but Sean Payton, for the most part, I mean, became a superstar with a quarterback that never scrambled. So, I mean, part of this offense, timing, get rid of the ball. But there are plays where it's like, if the guy's not open boat, take off. You're a really good athlete. And the commentators, I would say, over the course of the season have been saying that he's very, I would say, hesitant to run on spots. We don't need you running all the time, but just take off. He always wants to throw and it's just hurting him. He's scrambling like backwards to the side to keep plays along, alive with his arm. And from a throwing standpoint, it's just not really working out. Now, their defense, like you said, their team, their Roster is fantastic. They're defense.
C
They don't have a playoff team, they don't have Green Law.
A
So Huanga might have saved the game with that pass breakup on the second to last pass by Fields. They're going to be a playoff, a lock playoff team. They have one of the easiest schedules left. They are going to win. I honestly they should win the division especially based with the Chargers injuries and you know we're recording this before the Chiefs game but they got no chance to make a real run the playoffs. Their quarterback doesn't play better.
C
That's right.
A
College football in the NFL once you get the best opponents playing the best opponents, your quarterback has to play well. If he doesn't, you lose. John Mateer, bad Bo Nicks, that's where they got very lucky to me they lose this game. I think if they're playing like 30 other NFL teams they just got like you said, the worst coached, just the worst team in the league. Whose offense is. Who's atrocious.
C
Yeah. And I mean Justin Fields isn't good but I said this when he went to the jets, he went from the Bears defensive coach, Steelers defensive coach, jets defensive coach. He's not good enough to overcome bad coaching in Pittsburgh. In a six game stretch he was four and two and looked competent. It goes to show you Pittsburgh maybe inartistic Pittsburgh wins a lot of games and let's just talk about that because it's not a great game but it's worthy of discussion. So Dylan Gabriel had to throw 52 times. I mean go look at the box score if you didn't watch the game. You can't have him. He threw for 220 yards. You can't have him throwing 52 times.
A
He was getting crushed all game too. His tackles are getting beaten like a drum.
C
I want to talk Chargers who end a two game losing streak. Chargers 29, Dolphins 27. So there was. Listen, the Miami Dolphins could have drafted Herbert and they drafted Tua. So I was a bigger fan than Herbert out of college, than Tua, but not a lot of GMs. There were a lot of GMs that liked Tua. Chris Greer, who I has been a GM for 10 years and not a lot of Pro Bowlers. I mean they've, they've Battle line gave Tua an extension. It wouldn't have been my call but Tua had three picks today and Herbert put on a show. 29 of 38, no Quentin Johnson, four backups on the offensive line. There was a play at the end of the game. It's unbelievable. Herbert is just getting attacked. I mean, he leads the NFL and getting hit since I think since he was drafted, I think he's been hit more than any quarterback in the league. So he's got backups everywhere. No, Quentin Johnson. It's LAD McConkey and a number three running back and some backups. Four backups on the offensive line. So as they trail late, the Dolphins score. Here they come back. It looked like the Dolphins were going to win. Herbert breaks a tackle from a defensive lineman. And this is why. Traits. You're a former NFL scout. This is why traits matter. Tua doesn't escape that. Brock Purdy doesn't escape that. It's just one of those things that smaller quarterbacks. Kyler Murray doesn't escape it. Herbert at six five and a half, 235 and strong, bounces off a defensive tackle, escapes somehow moving to his left gets lad McConkey, who flies down the sideline. They ultimately win it with a field goal. And in my takeaway in that game is it highlights the Miami problem when you draft Tua, who's a smaller quarterback and not as athletic as Herbert. I mean, and again, Chris Greer wasn't alone. There were people that loved Tua is. I look at Mike McDaniel, Tua said after the game, people are missing meetings. People are late. It's like, holy crap, Tua's calling out Mike McDaniel. But I thought this was overall, this really puts a ribbon on the Dolphins. When you watched Herbert Kerry, only San Francisco's more banged up. When you watch Herbert carry a completely depleted roster on the road from behind to win over to who's home, who's comfortable, who's got most of his weapons. To me, it was like, this is the definition of why the Dolphins are the Dolphins.
A
Yeah. I mean, I thought the Herbert play was the play of the day. I mean, given that the injuries that felt like they were going to lose the game, you know, the defense kind of gave it up at the end. I mean, Waller's wide open in the corner of the end zone for Tua to throw him a little lollipop. And then he breaks that tackle sack for the throw. Then McConkey. I mean, how good have those two guys been since they've linked up? I mean, holy moly. I mean, they. McConkie is. He's like a West Welker meets Edelman. I mean, he's a. He's a stud. But Herbert, there was a. You know, I understand what to is saying. And we've known about the dysfunction in Miami now for a while, it's pretty embarrassing. But I also think like to a, you throw a pick, you guys were up 16 to 13 and throw a pick over the middle of the field. And that pick doesn't get thrown if you're Justin Herbert because he has a much stronger arm. Well, the ball, you know, when you have a weaker arm like Philip Rivers through a lot of picks is great. It's an easier ball to catch. So if his timings a little off, you know, Peyton Manning's ball, if he's a little late is much more pickable than cam Newton throwing 100 mile an hour fastball. And you just watch to his ball kind of floats. And the Charger defender was able to jump right in front of the route. The guy was open. But it's when we talk about arm strength, obviously that doesn't determine if you're going to be a great player or not. Peyton had an average arm at best. But Tua is nowhere near the guys with average arms that were great players and makes mistakes constantly. And that was 16 to 13. And then boom, three plays later the Chargers are up 23 to 13. And I just think that, you know, two is a pretty average player, which list relative to league. He's still better than a lot of guys, but he is not talented enough. We talk about Baker. Cleveland can't overcome it. Mac Jones with Belichick and that disaster the last couple years, can't overcome it. Tua, this Miami thing. No chance you put Tua on, you just gave him to Kevin o' Connell right now. I bet he'd look a lot better, right? And you know, Kevin o' Connell said this over the off season. Most teams fail quarterbacks. We know Tua is very limited. We've known Jared Goff's been limited since he was playing a Cal can't move. Guess what the Lions don't ask them to do.
B
Move.
A
Guess what they asked him to do. Get rid of the ball fast. You know, I think sometimes Mike McDonald, Mike McDaniels is asking too. Like these deep drop backs push the ball down the field. Guys, he has an average arm and part of it now he has to carry the team. But they have all these little tiny receivers. Even when Tyreek was there. It's like I don't know if I would have built a team that way first off. And now it's like Waddle's an excellent player and made up. Yeah, awesome catch today down the sideline. But. But like I would try to get bigger body. Listen I don't know if it's going to work in Carolina or not, but I do understand the logic of we need to get this big body guy for a little quarterback.
B
Yep.
A
McMillan, the wide receiver from Arizona.
B
Why?
A
Because it's harder for him to see. Gives him a better catching radius.
C
Yeah.
A
Two is throwing. Do tiny little guys and he's a tiny little quarterback. Well, yeah. Herbert can see the tiny little receiver or Brady can see that they're 6 foot 5. It's the opposite with Tua. It's just a math equation. And then when you factor in his arms weak and I give him like I actually think too I, he's earned my respect of like being mentally tough and you know, he battles through like he doesn't tap out. I mean he still runs around when he's got a million concussions. But the, the organization's embarrassment. I, I, I just think that the two of thing, they, it's, it's more like he turns the ball over a lot and he's got issues, but the whole organization around him is just, I mean it's pretty low level.
C
If you had two as a quarterback, you'd need a good backup quarterback. They've never had that. And you need a good offensive line. It's stunk since he's been there. They've had good defensive fronts. They don't know what they're doing. Like, like I think about this all the time when I started the volume. When you, when you start a company, you have to have an identity. What are we? What aren't we? Let's stop chasing this. We're not this. We are this. If two is your quarterback, you have to have a good backup. You also have to have good protection, good pass pro. They've never done a good job with that. So there's two quarterbacks that won today. Baker, Mayfield and Justin Herbert, who had no business winning. Both are on the road, both missing multiple starters. Star players Joe Alt, Rashawn Slater, Quentin Johnson or Bucky Irving, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans, Abuka Baker, Mayfield and Justin Herbert. If you wondered what the difference between the haves and the have not quarterbacks in this league. Herbert and Baker on the road win games with almost 40% of their starters missing. And I thought when you watch Herbert juxtaposed with TUA today, Tua's throwing pick after pick and guys are bouncing off Herbert. It's like folks, that's a guy that will never pull a team. Herbert and Baker are pulling, they're not trailers, they're tractors. They are Pulling offenses.
A
But Mike McDonald. Mike McDaniel said last year that players that the fine system didn't work to team meetings. Right. He couldn't get guys to show up on well to it. You think people that they can't find you are going to show up to players only meetings. The culture has already been established. Nothing matters. Right. The standard doesn't exist. And this is what happens when you have a guy that no one respects and you bring him back and listen that's not a shot at Mike. It's just clearly the players do not view him like an authority figure. And there you can be a nice guy.
C
Right.
A
Andy Reid is good friends and has close relationships with his players. They also view him as an authority figure of if he says something is at 8 o' clock there is a level of respect to show up at 755. No one's asking you to be Tom coughlin and be 20 minutes early or you're late. But when a coach says it's not even. It's just basic business. Right. Everyone's there. We're making time. Our time is valuable. We've never had less time with all these rules show up and they weren't showing up to the team meetings last year when they why do you think Vic Fangio was like I want out of yeah.
C
Big Fangio said joke get me out of here. It's nonsense.
A
Yeah. Well Howie throw me a lifeline. And I think Stephen Ross like I don't even want to deal with this go. You know this is. But. But that was a reflection of Mike and the organization. In fairness to Mike, this has been going on even with Flores. No one's ever on the same page.
C
Let me throw this at. Yeah. I thought about this today. Most of the great cult culture creators Vrabel, Mike Tomlin, Dan Campbell. I would say Sean McVeigh feels bigger than he is. He's an Alpha.
A
I agree.
C
Is there's a physical component to them. And you could say what about Belichick Brady set the culture. Let's be honest about it. Like Brady ran that locker room. Like players were intimidated if Brady. I mean Brady outworked every player. He was a legend. He was the goat. Brady set that culture as much as Belichick Mike McDaniel. I mean if you walked into Google looks like some guy that would be and I'm not trying to be mean spirited but you're walking up in front of 6 foot 7325 pound Alphas. There is some. You cannot discredit the value. Have you Ever stood next to Dan Campbell or Mike Vrabel. These are huge men and Mike Tomlin's an intimidating man. So you either have to be intimidating in terms of volume or intensity. Sean Payton's intimid, like when you're around him, Sean's expertise and his intelligence. Andy Reid, success, volume. Like Andy, he's a yeller. Or there's the physical component. I said this when he first got hired, he didn't look like a guy that was going to walk up in front of a room and command respect from a bunch of 55 guys that average 6, 4, 2, 20.
A
No one thinks that. Especially if you go back to like, you know, I was watching early this morning and they doing something on Brian Schottenheimer and they were talking a lot about Marty, you know, or Bill Parcells or some of those guys, Jimmy Johnson. Obviously these guys, if they got into a physical altercation with a player, are going to lose. But I bet if you ask a lot of those players, they'd say, I never knew when the guy might actually snap on me. And again, I knew I could beat the guy up. But like he had an im intimidation factor. You go back, you watch some of those cowboy practices. You know, Jimmy's 50 years old, screaming at Charles Haley. You know, I grew up on, you know, Bill Walter retired George Seifert, he was terrifying. It's like this guy is just no one messed with him. And I think there's an element of that. Obviously Mike McDaniel is never gonna have to fight any of these guys, but they look at him like, in what world would you wouldn't take that guy seriously if he was your friend's dad and he got mad at you over at his house playing video games if you were a 15 year old kid.
C
I mean, let's be honest, there is.

Okay. I haven't talked to Matt Moseley in a long time. Host of the Doomsday Podcast with Ed Werder. But Ed's not here today, so let's just say Matt's the host and Ed will have to get, you know, deal with all the, you know, landmines after this. So first of all, long look, it's. I thought this was a four win team. I thought Schottenheimer was going to be a disaster. And yet the offense is cooking with no CD Lamb. They're rebuilding the O line. Javante Williams looks pretty good. They don't have a number one receiver. I think Pickens is more of a two. What, what is Brian Schottenheimer, who hadn't interviewed for a head job in a decade and a half. What's the secret sauce here.
A
By the way?
B
I mean, they have CD coming back, so, you know, I think we would agree he's a legit one.
C
He's great.
B
Pickens playing himself into a big contract and see Jerry has all this room now to deal with, you know, getting trading Micah. He's got all the cap room in the world so Jerry can, can move around and do some things. I, it really is kind of sad though because it, it feels like it's going to be wasted.
C
It.
B
They're going to win more than four games. But, but they're, they're losing games. And this is probably the best Dax ever played. This is the most comfortable he's been. And thinking about what you just said without CD with Pickens in that last game, without even a run game. I mean, you know Bobby Brown from Texas A and M, the fifth year player out of A and M and whoever else Carolina was lining, lining up. You could name them all. College they were. I mean, they had Javante bottled up and still Dak was fine. Yeah, and they're scoring 30 points a game and they had one hiccup and that was in Chicago and they had a really bad outing against Caleb in Chicago, but maybe Ben Johnson is turning that thing around. But this is a real, this is. But the offense is, is great. It looks so much better honestly than even McCarthy because they're just more inventive. They're getting more people Involved. Yeah, the running game looks better like what they're doing with their tight ends. I mean, think about that. Ferguson didn't have a touchdown all of last season. I don't get a single touchdown. He said like four in the last four weeks. Yeah, like he's on a roll and, and then, you know, he's doing for Pickens what Romo used to do for the Lauren Robinsons and the, you know, you remember all miles they had. I mean they've, they've had some, they. Miles Austin, you know, Romo used to elevate guys and Dax even doing that because Pickens looks incredible and he's looked like a number one. But I, I don't. I think you're for win. I think they'll exceed that. But only Colin because the NFC east is so bad. Like this thing looks bad right now and this could have been a year with a league average defense. Cowboys could have a great shot of winning this division. That's how bad the division looks right now. And, and they're not going to be able to do it because this defense is horrific. And there's no, I don't really see any path forward like anybody you could bring in.
C
What I've said this, it's the Shaq Kobe trade. The Lakers knew for two years Shaq was going to go to Miami with D. Wade and win more than Kobe was. But in the end it was the right move. I think I am the only syndicated voice TV or radio that has said I love moving Dak. Jerry's a deal maker. In the last two years, he couldn't pay $8 million for Derek Henry. You took the oil man in the Maverick and you muted his ability to do any deals because they were too top heavy. And now Dak is playing great. So you go in to a draft next year with two ones and you don't need a quarterback. Meaning, let's say they finish, they have the eighth pick, eighth pick, ninth pick. They could move down to 15, grab another three or a four or five, rebuild the defense. You know how it works. Defense is about collisions, is about blowing stuff up. You can walk in as a pass rusher, as an elite corner or a linebacker and play as a rookie and have an impact. I mean, Fred Warner did, Boses do, Micah did. You're not asking a tight end to learn how to block out of college or a quarterback or an offensive lineman where even if you're good, it takes a year. I think Dallas is going to take those first two draft picks. They're going to Upgrade their defense. They'll have money to buy another playmaker. Kenny Clark's a nice get in that deal. I think Dallas long term is better without Micah. I just think you're going to lose this trade because Green Bay is going to win playoff games and you're going to look bad. You're going to look like Kobe with the Lakers waiting to get Gasol. Shaqs in Miami winning and everybody crushes you for two years. But in the end, Gasol was the better fit.
B
Okay, but the quarterback is going to be 34 or 35 years old by the time you're turning the corner and getting all these picks in. So you might have to go get another quarterback too. And you're so. I mean, what's happening right now is they're wasting a brilliant year. He was second. I mean, I know we, we beat up on him and, and you have, and I have over the years to a certain extent. He was number two in the MVP voting just two years ago.
C
Yeah.
B
20, 23. Does he get hurt too much? Yes. Does he run the ball anymore? No. But like he's making right right now he's as efficient. I mean, there's not a quarterback in the league playing more consistently and throwing the ball better than Dak right now.
C
Totally and totally.
B
And I just don't know if they can turn it around as quickly as you're talking about. And plus, what a, what a deal to do to Eber Floose and even Shy. What a deal. A week before, seven days or five days before the deal, you trade your one huge defensive playmaker and it's, it's, it's not just, oh, they're struggling against the run. They're struggling. It's the pass. It's a disaster. It's a disaster. So while I agree and it's interesting to see what they do with it, they're going to be on their third defensive coordinator in three years. Because if ever flu continues down this path, this isn't sustainable and they're not going to give him another season. And so Shoddy has to fire him. I mean, although it's not Shoddy's decision. And again, that's where it all comes back to. I mean, Jerry medals so much. He didn't even allow this new internal candidate to hire his own defense coordinator. I think Eberfluss was in the building and probably hired before they'd even finished the deal with, with, with Schottenheimer. So again, this is the backwards dealings of an owner slash gm. But I mean, I It'd be great if they could, if they could turn it and flip it. I mean, they'll have two first round picks next year. Maybe they find somebody. But I mean, think about what they're missing right now. They don't have a decent linebacker. There are two stud defensive backs. There are two stud cornerbacks that are what, 90 million worth? 90 million in the contracts combining for about 36 to 40 million this year just on. This year's books are horrible right now. They don't have anybody's playing safety. They're playing Donovan Wilson completely out of position. They don't have a linebacker that can make a tackle. I mean, it's bad. This makes like Rob Ryan, you know, look, look almost like he knows what he's doing, you know, go back to some of those guys he struggled with. So it's, it's just, I guess to me, Colin, I see what you're saying and I, I'll be interested to see what they're able to build moving forward. But as I've said to you before, it really is a gut punch to have locked into two quarterbacks.
C
Yeah.
B
Or 20 years. Now the Green Bay packers have done it for 30.
C
Yes.
B
Now they, I'm not saying they locked into it, although the trade for far. You can say what you want. And they got Aaron Rodgers late, way later than anybody ever thought Rodgers would go in the first round. But they've had 30 years of great quarterback play.
C
Yeah.
B
Cowboys are entering year 20 of tremendous quarterback play and have nothing to show for. At least the packers have one Super Bowl. At least they can point to one Super Bowl. Cowboys have zero and not even an NFC title game.
C
You know, listen, we know coordinators often get elevated to head coaches and they're just not built for it. And there's probably a few position coaches that get elevated to coordinators and they're not built for it. Failure. You know, it's, it's, it's just part of football. I mean, I say this all the time. We were. Jason McIntyre and I talked about it the other day. He asked who's the next great automatic hire. So when the Broncos hired Peyton, you knew it would work. When the Chargers hired Harbaugh, you knew it would work. I argued in the off season. The Patriots were going to double their win total. Mike Vrabel was going to work about every other year. I mean, Mike McCarthy to Dallas was going to have some success. He's a solid coach. He and Aaron, Aaron can be hard to get along with. It's funny if Schottenheimer leaves. So McIntyre asked this question. Who's the guarantee? There's about one every other year where you're like, oh, yeah, that'll win games. Peyton Harbaugh, Vrabel, McCarthy. If I said to you Brian Schottenheimer lasts a year, is there a name? I gotta. I'll throw it out at you. You're gonna think I'm crazy here. You're gonna think I'm crazy. Belichick. Let's do that. Bill Belichick taking over. Bill Belichick takes over the Dallas Cowboys. College is a disaster. He doesn't fit. He doesn't have a college sensibility. Belichick, by the way, is not good with personnel. And you could go to him and say, bill, we do not trust you on personnel. We need a coach. Yeah. Is that nuts? It only.
B
No, it wouldn't have been. But I think he's embarrassed himself, and I think he's hurt his credibility so bad. He hasn't damaged his legacy. That'll always be there. But. But he can't. I don't see him leading the team. And the fit's not good because the guy he learned from and he came up under Bill Parcells has already been with the Cowboys. And let me tell you. And I love Bill and still keep in touch with him. That was the most miserable I ever saw. Jared. Jerry cannot function in a. In a world with a head coach like that. So into your point about McCarthy. Isn't that funny? You know what I'm seeing right now when you say who are going to be the hot coaches in the NFL? His name is one of the first ones you see. It's same thing as James Franklin. Right now. He bottoms out with Penn State, and by the time these hires are made, Franklin's going to seem like these incredible choice for these SEC openings. Right? Florida, Auburn, Franklin won it. Vandy, he's coaching the sec. Like, Franklin's gonna be a hot name. And he just. He just bottomed out three of the worst weeks in the history of college football. But, yeah, I. That's a fascinating thing to imagine, Belichick. But Jerry likes having a good time too much to put up with having a bad time to have a good time.
C
Right.
B
If you know what I mean.
C
Yeah.
B
He can't.
A
Yeah.

And now he would like the Jordan Hudson aspect of it. Jerry would like that. He would like some of the sideshow if. If some of that came to town. But dealing, he would not want. I mean, Bill wouldn't want an owner out there. Now, here's the thing. Shoddy's doing well enough as an offensive coach that Jerry's kind of excited. So Jerry is in the mindset right now of if we just get, if we do something to get the defense going, we can do this with Shoddy. We can do this with Shoddy because there's a belief right now with the way Dax playing, that they found the perfect guy for Dakota. So there won't be a firing after this season. I know. I remember you saying maybe, maybe Shoddy could be one and done, but shot. He's doing too well on offense. He's doing too well on offense to get fired. So they have to go with their third defensive coordinator in the last three years. They cannot hire defensive coordinators. They're horrific at it. Mike Nolan was horrible. Quinn had a pretty good run. Quinn gets hired to be a head coach, then they have two more bad ones. They had Rob Ryan before Marinelli and Monty Kiffin. That was a rough. That was kind of a rough scene. They were kind of, you know, they were past their prime.
C
They're.
B
They're right. They just can't. They're horrible at it. You know what, by the way, isn't it interesting that. That Garrett's never gotten another opportunity? Because it's like if you're decent with the Cowboys and you win a ton of games and I promise you, when they interviewed him for the Falcons and the Ravens before he got the Cowboys job, he blew them all away like they were. They were blown away by Garrett. But I guess his. His time as the office coordinator with the Giants just kind of ruined his reputation. I guess.

Podcast: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Episode: Colin Cowherd Podcast Prime Cuts - Bills FLOP On MNF, Baker For MVP? Dolphins Disaster, Should Cowboys Hire Belichick?
Date: October 18, 2025
This episode is a roundup of the week’s biggest NFL stories, featuring Colin’s trademark no-nonsense takes and rapid-fire analysis. Topics include the Chicago Bears’ rare road win, the Buffalo Bills’ decline, Baker Mayfield’s MVP campaign, the Dolphins’ dysfunction, the disaster-class Jets, and a longer dive with Matt Moseley into the Dallas Cowboys’ future—including the spicy question: Should Jerry Jones hire Bill Belichick?
Segment Start: [04:30]
“Caleb Williams was good enough. Still misses too many throws you got to make in the NFL consistently, he's not as accurate as Jaden Daniels. But he didn't make that big mistake or two that Jaden Daniels did.” — Colin [04:58]
Memorable Moment:
“That's about as good an effort on the road for the Bears offensive line. I mean, they haven't had a lot of them.” — Colin [06:27]
Other Notes:
Segment Start: [14:43]
“Sean McDermott has had Josh Allen for all these years and there's always a hole in the team… Mike Vrabel walks in, they're already in first place.” — Colin [16:17]
“Buffalo outside of Josh Allen does not look intimidating. Their perimeter weapons—average. The secondary—average. Pass rush is kind of hit and miss…” — Colin [17:10]
Segment Start: [20:32]
“I think Baker has to be your MVP at this point… he had a magical, emotional, magical scramble for a first down.” — Colin [20:55]
“You just can't overcome that, Colin. … Careers are altered, not like, ‘hey, he rolled an ankle or dinged an elbow.’” — Co-host [23:56]
Segment Start: [27:47]
“I think the Jets are the worst coached team in the league and I feel bad, but there are coaches… it's just too big of an assignment. My interpretation is the Jets can't do anything right.” — Colin [29:08]
Segment Start: [32:26]
Segment Start: [36:09]
“This is why traits matter… smaller quarterbacks … Tua doesn’t escape that. Brock Purdy doesn’t escape that. It’s just one of those things…” — Colin [37:11]
“People are missing meetings, people are late… holy crap, Tua’s calling out Mike McDaniel.” — Colin [38:33]
“They don't know what they're doing… If Tua is your quarterback, you have to have a good backup. You also have to have good protection, good pass pro. They've never done a good job with that.” — Colin [42:14]
“Mike McDaniel… doesn’t look like a guy that’s going to walk up in front of a room and command respect from a bunch of 55 guys that average 6’4”, 220.” — Colin [45:20]
Segment Start: [51:18]
“This is probably the best Dak’s ever played…they're scoring 30 points a game and they had one hiccup.” — Matt Moseley [52:30]
“I think Dallas is going to take those first two draft picks, they're going to upgrade their defense. They'll have money to buy another playmaker.” — Colin [54:29]
“Is that nuts? It only…” — Colin [61:27]
“Jerry likes having a good time too much to put up with having a bad time to have a good time.” — Matt Moseley [62:58]
On Baker’s Resurgence:
“They used to call me cocky, abrasive, and now they say moxie and dog. Well, Baker… you definitely feel a little more calm. And also you're out of a chaotic situation.” — Co-host [26:17]
On Organizational Identity:
“When you start a company, you have to have an identity. What are we? What aren’t we? Let’s stop chasing this. We’re not this. We are this.” — Colin [42:14]
On Mike McDaniel’s Leadership:
“If you walked into Google, looks like some guy that would be … But you’re walking up in front of 6’7”, 325 pound alphas.” — Colin [45:20]
Summing Up the Cowboys' Defensive Crisis:
“They don't have anybody who's playing safety… They don't have a linebacker that can make a tackle. … It's bad. This makes Rob Ryan look almost like he knows what he's doing.” — Matt Moseley [58:35]
This episode delivers a comprehensive and highly opinionated look at the NFL’s biggest headlines, with Colin Cowherd dissecting quarterback narratives, exposing organizational dysfunction, and painting the Cowboys’ future as simultaneously hopeful and fraught. Memorable insights include calls for patience in Chicago, alarm over Buffalo’s waning window, and genuine praise for Baker Mayfield, who has gone from “cast off” to MVP contender. The show’s tone is direct, energetic, and not shy about strong critiques—a must-listen for fans seeking sharp NFL analysis.
