Rich Davis
Now before we get to spectacles in sports and we're going to play a game this hour. Quote me going to give away some prizes. A lot of fun here on cnr. I had something I wanted to ask you real quick.
Kavino
Sure.
Rich Davis
You ever see a hack on social media and you're like, how have I never thought of that before?
Kavino
Like what? Well, you just said like our boy, Sean Umshard. What?
Rich Davis
No way. I saw sakes. You brought up how you know this is the official kickoff of summer this week. You know, a lot of people having their cookouts and barbecues.
Kavino
What? No way. Like you can't believe there's an easier way to do something you've done your.
Rich Davis
Whole life or something that you're feeling is how have I never done this before?
Kavino
Well, give me your hack.
Rich Davis
Someone said instead of ice cubes, why don't you just freeze the cocktail you have so that you never have a watered down drink? Freeze.
Kavino
Might not want. You might not want a slushy. Sort of old fashioned.
Rich Davis
No, but I'm saying freeze your mixers. I know certain alcohols can't be frozen. But freeze your mixers. So instead of having a watered down drink, like someone said iced tea should never be watered down, just put an ice cube tray full of iced tea. Wait within. Okay, so. Or you could do lemonade and slowly make an Arnold Palmer. Because if you can't freeze an individual drink. Cause no, you're missing it. No, no, I was kidding. What if I poured you.
Kavino
No way.
Rich Davis
A glass of iced tea and I threw two lemonade ice cubes in there. But they're not water, it's lemonade.
Kavino
It's just not watering down the product.
Rich Davis
It's not going to fill up the glass when it melts. And you're not going to get any liquid out of it for like half an hour. You're going to have to leave it out in the hot sun.
Kavino
You do lemonade shots.
Rich Davis
It doesn't make any. That doesn't make sense. I'm just saying, why not make ice cubes instead of water?
Kavino
You know what, Rich? Lots of great hacks. I'm not sure if that's one of them.
Rich Davis
I will screw you. I got an idea.
Kavino
Okay, fine. You know, you know what?
Rich Davis
Go back to drawing board. Find you if you. You're cool.
Kavino
You owe us a good hack now. You owe us a good hack.
Rich Davis
Come on, Gene. Hack man.
Kavino
Yeah, find us a good hack.
Rich Davis
Well, can I. Can I tell you something else I wanted to point out? You said it's summertime and so many people are going to their kids baseball games.
Kavino
Summertime activities.
Rich Davis
Summertime activities.
Kavino
Summertime activities.
Rich Davis
You go to the beach, you're at the park, and what do you always see? The guy going around with a little ice cream truck with his little bell he'll be pushing on the cart or the actual ice cream man. Is it about time that if someone doesn't have Zell, you forgot the fruit.
Kavino
Guy out here on the west side.
Rich Davis
Or of course the fruit with the tahin.
Kavino
Oh yeah, they call me Tahino Covino.
Rich Davis
If you don't have the ability to pay by Zelle Venmo or Apple Pay or tap. Like, do you realize how much money you're leaving on the table? Like. Like if you bump into someone selling ice cream at the beach or at the park without those options, they did the worst business person of all time.
Kavino
Told you if I was a hobo or if I was a stripper, I'd have a QR code tattooed on my ass.
Rich Davis
Oh, that was another idea. See, that was the hack.
Kavino
There you go.
Rich Davis
The hack was, if you're a Stripper, you should have a QR code on your inner thigh.
Kavino
Take you right to my Venmo. Make it easy. So anyway, Rich, I think you owe us a hack after that.
Rich Davis
You know what? I'll think of one for next time.
Kavino
And let's talk spectacles here on the show. When I say spectacles, I'll say it again. Not talking. Chris Sabo, who's still my standard answer since little league of guys that wear glasses in sports and baseball.
Rich Davis
I thought Kurt Rambis would be high in that list of, you know, I.
Kavino
Can'T think of any who would be a current day answer. A current day. I think everyone to calve.
Rich Davis
I think at this point everyone wears some type of contact lens or you wouldn't even know if they were glass. Is there a current athlete that wears glasses or goggles? Prescription goggles.
Kavino
I can't think of anybody.
Rich Davis
Man, a generation without a four eyes player. It's a shame they get all steam. I'm sure there's reasons for moving away from them because they get all steamed up.
Kavino
Horace Grant, you have to go back. I can't think of anybody. So when I say spectacles, I mean Jake Paul type of events. Yeah, like silly sporting events. Now, Rich, if you really think about it, there's like huge opportunity here. Even as a broadcaster.
Rich Davis
I don't know if I want to think about it. Because you wouldn't think about ice cubes.
Kavino
No, but there's. I mean, Sam sort of shot you down, if you really want to be honest. Sam was like, you know what? I don't like this idea.
Rich Davis
I'll find another hack to work.
Kavino
Sam was like, no. In other words, you know what? Now you think about it. No, that's dumb. If you were into covering sports, you might want to look into the avenue of banana ball and Jake Paul fights. I mean, we talk about this stuff because we don't take ourselves that serious. We have fun. Sports is fun. But you're really starting to see a trend, you're starting to see a movement of where sports is headed because there's room for both. And when I say there's room for both, meaning there's room for sports that matter and sports that are really just there for fun, the spectacle that we're talking about. Because today the Tyree Kill race was canceled. Noah Lyles, Olympic gold medal winner, sprinter Noah Lyles was supposed to race Tyree Kill, but Noah Lyles canceled it.
Danny G
That was going to be the highlight of our summer.
Kavino
Yeah, but seriously, there's some fun in that. And it's not even high profile names like that.
Danny G
We talked about this last year when they planned it, remember?
Kavino
Yeah, Noah Lyles and Tyreek Hill canceled the race, but just this past weekend. He's a social media influencer, but he sort of went viral. Remember that guy, Ashton hall, his morning routine. Morning routine guy, morning routine guy.
Rich Davis
Ashton, Saratoga Springs water guy, banana peels on his face. Yeah, the whole deal. Rage on the face.
Kavino
A pop. A very popular streamer by the name of Ishowspeed. But dude, you would say, well, that's sort of dumb. Who cares about those guys? That was everywhere over the weekend. Ashton hall lost. He fell and fell. This Ishowspeed streamer guy sort of smoked him. But it got so popular, got so viral that even Tyree Kill went viral. Talking about it, saying, yo, they both look slow to me. I'll smoke both of these guys. And then we start getting intrigued. And then what else happened over the weekend? The big three fight between Lance Stevenson and Dwight Howard. Yo, dude, that looked like a serious heated matchup. Did you see Michael Beasley in the face of Dwight Howard? Dude, that was intense. So of course we care about what's going on in the NBA and the finals, but there's still room for pick three. There's still room for this. How about that Lance Stevenson, Beasley, one on one tournament that happened, a pay per view event just two weeks ago. They got a lot of social media coverage.
Rich Davis
You're talking to me. Yeah, you talk to me.
Kavino
Yeah. But I think a lot of people, as Rob Parker would say, poo poo with these things when honestly there's a giant market for this stuff. And I feel like you're sleeping on it because there's a lot of people in the world of social media and younger people that really like and enjoy this stuff because it's not that serious.
Rich Davis
Hey, buddy boy. I've been on since the days of Mayweather McGregor since we were kids and it was, what is it? The battle of the network stars. I've always loved the spectacle. The spectacle. And, you know, you could have called me immature for it. Or you like real sports, Danny. I've always felt like these things are entertaining. They never replace. Keep this in mind. They never replace real sports for me. But I don't see why you wouldn't find interest in Tyreek Hill. I think racing a gold medalist, because in my mind that's fun as hell.
Kavino
No, I think real sports, Bryant Gumbel style, I think real sports needs to take some notes as to why these things are blowing up. And why they're even garnering any interest. Like, I think MLB needs to look at banana ball a little bit. I'm not saying they need to clown it up, but there's something there. As far as entertainment factor, I think the NBA needs to say, you know what, man, our all star break is a little weak. We're making moves, we're making changes. But maybe the one on one stuff is dope with the right players. Cause there's a lot of buzz around this stuff.
Danny G
And you guys have talked a lot about the Savannah Bananas this season. And also it's why we all care about the Nathan's hot dog eating contest. Just had Joey Chestnut on yesterday. It's a spectacle, don't you think?
Kavino
And there's a growing market for that. Because you know what, Rich? It's like mindless fun, but yet still sports. It's like you could be at the cookout and have this goofy stuff on. You could have company over, still have this on, not be glued to it. You're not surrounding your whole event around this. It's just background fun to watch. And again, it's not as serious as regular sports.
Rich Davis
I told you last weekend, you know, banana ball is expanding.
Kavino
There's four teams. There's supposed to be six different banana ball teams in the next few years.
Rich Davis
And the thing is, unlike the Globetrotters, who, I was saying, trivia for you, buddy. Who did the Globetrotters beat up every time? The Washington Generals.
Kavino
Bam.
Rich Davis
Remember, the whole point was any other brain busters, Remember every time they would just whoop them and that was it. What was the rumor? That one time the Generals won? Right.
Kavino
I don't think it was. I think they did. I think they beat him once.
Rich Davis
Once. The thing about banana ball. And again, this is no commercial. They're not giving us anything. I find it entertaining in that it's not just the Savannah Bananas that are entertaining.
Kavino
It's not you, Rich. There's millions and millions of people on a wait list to get in. And there's college stadiums all over the country that are trying to get their bid on. Hey, come play here.
Rich Davis
Well, there's money. Such a popular ticket money to be made. And I was going to say the other teams, like the party animals and you know, the people that play the bananas aren't just chumps that they beat like the van. And Bananas don't win every game. And they're not the only ones doing these tricks and silly things. And we talked about this a couple weeks ago. So let me, let me pull this back. For a second, remember we had that conversation. Would you rather be on the Colorado Rockies or be a Savannah Banana if money didn't matter?
Kavino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
And I think we all agree being in the big leagues is just such an honor. It doesn't matter if you're on the worst team in history, the Rockies. It's still the bigs.
Kavino
I made it.
Rich Davis
I get it. But we were seeing the salaries of a Savannah Banana is close to $100,000. Danny, would you agree that if that number goes from 90 to $100,000 to maybe 3 to $500,000, all of a sudden, the interest level of some of these young ballplayers might be like, you know what? I don't think I'm good enough to make the bigs, but if I start learning some trick plays.
Danny G
Yeah. Definitely changes people's thoughts on it.
Kavino
It's a great existence. You're having fun touring, Women love you, kids love you, families are going to see you. It's a. It's a great second option if you're not good enough for the big leagues. And you could flip around and stuff. But if you really pause for a second, I could see what's happening. There is such a growing market. You know, just this week, Jake Paul said something that there might be some truth to. He said, I'm the best thing for boxing since Muhammad Ali. And it sounds outrageous, but people tune in. There's a huge growing market for it. He's fighting Chavez Jr. Not this weekend, the next weekend, the weekend of the 28th. And guess what? We're all quick to be like, who cares? Everybody's tuning in for whatever reason because it's fun, and there's room for that. And that's why there's room for goofballs like us on the radio, to be honest. You got 23 hours of serious sports talk radio. I think you guys could have some fun for two hours. Where we do appreciate our sports, but we're goofing around having fun at the same time.
Rich Davis
Funny is that you just put 25 hours in a day.
Kavino
Did I? 20. Oh, my bad. Did I say that was the joke?
Rich Davis
You get it?
Kavino
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. Let's talk about ice cubes again. You.
Danny G
The Extra Hour. The Extra Hour is our Best of podcast.
Kavino
Yeah, yeah, that's what I meant. Yeah.
Rich Davis
The Beatles sang about eight days a week.
Kavino
Eight days a week. I love you.
Rich Davis
Camino's a genius.
Kavino
I'm putting in extra work. I don't know about you.
Rich Davis
No, but what Kavino said. I want to adjust what Jake Paul.
Kavino
Said so much of this, Rich.
Rich Davis
I actually want to adjust Jake Paul's quote and then believe it. If he said he's the best thing to happen to boxing since Mike Tyson.
Kavino
Muhammad Ali.
Rich Davis
No, no, he said Ali. I'm saying if he adjusted it because Tyson brought so many eyes in the 80s and he revolutionized like, you know, fight nights and pay per views where I was like, oh my God, Tyson's going to knock him out right away. I really do think spectacle wise and must watch. I've never had friends be like, we gotta get together for the Klitschko fight. I never had a friend say, yo, Anthony Joshua must see I Mayweather was a defensive fighter. He was great, but he wasn't knocking people out.
Kavino
You have to be a hardcore fan. You have to, you know, you have to follow the sport. This stuff is just fun and there's room for that. And I think we need to be a little more open to the fun and, and talk about it because I'm telling you what, you know what, a lot of people slept on, and we did mention it here, that one on one pay per view with Stevenson and Beasley, there was something to that, man. It was a lot of emotion involved. These guys still have game. Danny G, as you were pointing out, you don't want to see if Dwight Howard still has game and you're seeing them fighting. There's a lot of intensity.
Danny G
We had heard Howard for so many months say, Lakers, I'm right here. You need a big guy, come get me. I can still play. And he and some other older players are proving that.
Kavino
Imagine back in the day too. I mean, we could still get that now, but imagine back in the day if we were able to see a pay per view event between a retired Jordan and somebody else. That would be. There's something there, man.
Rich Davis
Listen, I'm not trying to downplay our love of mainstream real sports, right?
Kavino
Hell no. But saying there's room for both, but it's growing, whether you like it or not.
Rich Davis
But. But I do think a lot of old heads and a lot of people that are sports fans are quick to, as you said, poo poo the spectacle, which I think there's room for both. Again, why can't you love the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA, college football? Why can't you love that, do you think?
Danny G
Because it's like cool to like put a thumb down to things that are kind of gimmicky?
Rich Davis
Yeah, I guess so. But I think you're allowed to love all the things I said. And also watch a.
Kavino
You don't have to take it serious.
Rich Davis
You could do that.
Kavino
It's not meant to be.
Rich Davis
You could love all the things I just said, NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball, but still say, oh, I want to watch Jake Paul fight and watch the Savannah Bananas. What? Why can't you like all that stuff?
Kavino
Do you agree or disagree? Do you feel what we're saying at all? 87799 on Fox. And the reason we talk about this is because if you follow social media trends, you're seeing just as much banana ball highlights as you are Ohtani on the mound. All day, I was seeing that this Tyreek Hill race was canceled. I'm like, oh, that would have been cool to see how Tyreek Hill squared up against Noah Lyles. Oh, but it's canceled. And then again, like we said, all the other side stuff, these big threes and all the highlights we're seeing, you can't help but notice that there's definitely a trend in the popularity of at least these clips. We're not seeing it on tv, but on social media. You're seeing it everywhere.
Rich Davis
I got a question for you.
Kavino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Do you think. Hear me out on this one. If Tyree Kill did fight. No fight. If he did race Noah Lyles, I.
Kavino
Think he was going to smoke him. I do.
Rich Davis
If Tyree Kill wins, does that throw everyone mentally for a loop that our fastest football player beat the fastest guy in the Olympics? Is that.
Kavino
I don't think it. Really? You don't think that's any shade on Noah Lyles? Again, he. You can't take away his gold medals. Right? He has, I think, multiple gold medals at his. As a sprinter.
Rich Davis
Doesn't that make you think that? I just want it because guys like Tyreek Hill didn't want to participate.
Kavino
I think it just elevates guys like Tyree Kill as like, wow, he's that exceptional man. He's that fast. I really think it just puts him on a higher echelon of speed.
Rich Davis
He.
Kavino
Oh, he has one gold medal. One gold.
Danny G
Yeah, it says one career gold medal.
Kavino
No Lyles. Again, gold medal sprinter. That race was canceled. So it just got us thinking about these spectacles we look forward to because, you know, I'm looking forward to that Jake Paul Chavez Jr. Fight. I know it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things as, as a fight fan, but I still find enjoyment in that stuff. Stupid, but stupid fun.
Rich Davis
I feel you. All right. Hey, Coming up, Danny G's got it all queued up. I'm ready I'm ready to beat you on this one. Quote me this is one of our newer games where there's a lot of.
Kavino
Radio host or tv. No, no. What Bozo Radio Hill said, I got an idea. Freeze your cocktails this summer. That way it doesn't get watered down. Who said that? Was it Ben Maller, Dicky Doodle Davis or Doug Gottlieb? Oh, quote me that's basically how the game is played.
Rich Davis
Yeah. And Danny G has pulled a lot of bizarre quotes from talking heads like you said on radio, on tv. And you just gotta think what sports buffoon said this. It's called quote me we're going to give away a stainless steel swiggy. It's multiple choice. It's easy to play. Hey, get involved. 87799 on Fox. We play next right here on Fox Sports Radio.
Kavino
Now, how many boxes do you get delivered to you every day? I'd have to say 99% of them are always for my girlfriend. Right. So now it's time to get yourself something sweet from Travis Matthew. But not everyone was convinced it was that simple.

By the way, funny ass update, we're Cavino and Rich and we spent the first hour, well, talking about Shohei's return and the story about Darren Wallen and why he retired endeavors. Both stories had to do with not wanting to play different positions. So Devers made his debut his press conference today with the Giants and at the press conference he says, I am here to play wherever they want me to play. You know what that's like? That's like when let's just say I know people or let's just say it's me. I don't know. In my previous relationship, I was like, let's have more kids. And my ex is like, I don't think I want any more kids. That was sort of the beginning of the end. She got into a new relationship, had two more kids. So it's not that she didn't want kids. It's not that she didn't want kids. She didn't want kids with me. That's really it.
Rich Davis
Raphael Devers just didn't want to accommodate the Red Sox.
Kavino
Really.
Rich Davis
The Giants, he'll do anything. That was a Jan and Michael issue on the office.
Kavino
How funny is that? I was like, yeah, I'm here to play wherever they want me to play. It's like, well, you wouldn't do that for the Red Sox. And dude, by the way, you know, in previous relationships. Yeah, previous girlfriends, wife, whatever, refused to.
Danny G
Move.
Kavino
Because of my career. And then in other relationships, they're in. They're willing to move to the other side of the world.
Rich Davis
I mean, you could even make it more kinky. Like you could have been with someone, with someone else, and you're like, wait, you wouldn't do that with me.
Kavino
Exactly.
Rich Davis
It's really a matter of do you want to accommodate the person or job you're with or at? And I feel like the Red Sox rubbed Rafael Devers wrong.
Kavino
It was less about him not wanting to do it with the Red Sox. I mean, not wanting to trade positions. It was just less about him wanting to do it for them specifically.
Rich Davis
That's pretty funny.
Kavino
He's saying the right things. Anyway.
Rich Davis
Well, hey, we are doing it live. Doing it live from the Fox Sports Radio studio and for 40 years, Tire Rack as we're helping customers find the right tires for how, what and where they drive their ship fast and free. Backed by free road hazard protection with convenient installation options like mobile tire installation.
Kavino
Yep. Tirerack.com, the way tire buying should be. And after the show, the podcast goes up. So if you miss any of today's show, any show ever, be sure to listen to the podcast. Search Covino and Rich, wherever you get your podcast. And our bonus podcast over promised. You could also watch that on fox Sports Radio's YouTube page, episode 96. Be sure to follow, rate and review our podcast. Give it five stars. And now it's time to play. Quote me.
Danny G
Sports media and athletes are quoted a lot.
Kavino
Stars attract other stars.
Rich Davis
Here comes the hot take.
Danny G
Quotes.
Rich Davis
Andy Reid should step down as head coach. This is not a one game. We asked him because they lost in this game.
Danny G
You guess the talking head.
Rich Davis
You can quote me on that.
Danny G
Quote me.
Clayton English
Yeah.
Danny G
All Right. Here we go. In this game, you need to tell me which blabbermouth said it.
Kavino
Oh.
Danny G
Let's meet the contestants.
Rich Davis
Ice cubes.
Danny G
The only man who could be as cool as Fonzie on the same TV show, Steve Covino.
Kavino
The only guy that works 25 hours a day.
Rich Davis
I saw Covino on that History Channel show. What were you talking about? You talk about Action park and. Yeah, lawn darts.
Kavino
Lawn darts, man.
Danny G
To Covino's, right, the broadcaster who proudly wears a Grimace T shirt. Rich Davis.
Rich Davis
I do.
Kavino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
You know, yesterday, Danny G. Not yesterday. The other day was the one year anniversary of Grimace pitching for the Nets.
Danny G
Sorry to hear that.
Kavino
You know why he wears that shirt, though? Because his uncle's Ronald McDonald clown.
Danny G
And the man who is taking 300 more reservations for Vegas Spotty Boy.
Mila
Please stop.
Kavino
Please make it stop.
Rich Davis
Yeah, Spot hates that. Our fan base is growing. Stop.
Danny G
And of course, the man who once drove donuts on Oakmont's greens with a golf cart, Dan Byer, right over there.
Mila
Would never. Would never.
Rich Davis
Hey, D.B. i got a question. You're a big golf guy. Are you a good mini golfer?
Mila
I like to play.
Rich Davis
Okay.
Mila
I don't know if that says anything or not.
Kavino
I dabble.
Rich Davis
Yes, he dabbles. He'll let the ball through his tiny mouth. Or a windmill.
Mila
Maybe a few free games won on 18 as it made it up the ramp the whole way.
Rich Davis
Nice.
Danny G
All right, we're gonna go to the CNR studio lines right now to find out who's gonna win a Swiggy. That is John in Iowa.
Rich Davis
John, Iowa.
Kavino
Hey, John.
Rich Davis
What's up, fellas?
Kavino
How's it going?
Danny G
Good, man. What do you do for a living there in Iowa?
Rich Davis
Fix electron microscope. A lot of drive. Ooh. Damn.
Kavino
Wow.
Danny G
Real job specialist there. Here.
Kavino
Sounds good.
Danny G
All right, here are the rules for quote me. The first contestant with two correct answers is the champ. Like our other games, if there's a tie, I have a two overtime quotes ready to go. Your name is your buzzer, but you do have to wait until all three possible answers are read. If there's two wrong answers in a row, we move on to the next quote. Are you ready?
Rich Davis
Let's go.
Danny G
Here we go. Round one. Here is the quote. If you hear this, somebody tells you I said it, you eat this one, you own it. Stop telling people that the WNBA is going to overtake the NBA. It's not. It never will. And my dumb ass decided to watch some basketball, some WNBA basketball, because I wanted to understand why he was saying this. And within I'm not exaggerating. Within one minute of watching that game, I turned it off and shook my head in disgust at Jason Whitlock for ever making a statement such as that. Quote me. Who? Me? Who was it? A, Ben Maller, B, levar Arrington? Or C, Jonas Knox?
Kavino
John.
Danny G
John Lavar.
Kavino
Aaron.
Danny G
It was Lavar.
Kavino
Good one.
Danny G
Just like that. Halfway to a Swiggy, and let's see what. Let's see what it sounded like. On fsr.
Rich Davis
If you hear this, somebody tells you, I said it, you eat this one, you own it. Leveraging. Stop telling people that the WNBA is going to overtake the NBA.
Kavino
It's not.
Rich Davis
It's not. It never. It never will. And my dumb ass decided to watch some basketball, some WNBA basketball, because I wanted to understand why he was saying this. And within. And I'm not exaggerating. Within one minute of watching that game, I turned it off and shook my head in disgust at Jason Whitlock forever.
Kavino
Making a statement such as that. So, hold on, Danny G. Jason Whitlock is saying or has said that WNBA will surpass the NBA.
Rich Davis
I feel like that goes against everything Jason Whelock has ever said.
Kavino
Surprised he said that. And, yeah, funny to hear. Lavar Arrington, you know, Cam Newton also famously said that the WNBA will surpass baseball. And I completely disagree. Yeah.
Danny G
All right.
Kavino
All right. Great one.
Danny G
So on the board is John halfway to a CNR Swiggy.
Rich Davis
Let's go.
Danny G
Here's the next quote, and you can.
Rich Davis
Quote me on that.
Danny G
I just think that Jaw, with him and Memphis, it just might be the right time for a change of scenery. And even for the franchise, the franchise don't feel as good as it did. And that's because Jaw is there. I'm just saying it doesn't feel like Memphis is going anywhere to me. Quote me. Who me? Was it A, Rob Parker, B, Kendrick Perkins? Or C, Jason Smith?
Kavino
Covino Cove? C, Jason Smith. No, Rich.
Danny G
Rich for the steal.
Rich Davis
I thought Jon got in there, too. Oh, John.
Danny G
Did John get in there?
Rich Davis
I'll give it to John.
Clayton English
Got.
Danny G
Well, I heard Rich first.
Rich Davis
Okay, I'm gonna go. Rob Parker.
Danny G
And you are correct, sir. Yes. Rob Parker. Never heard of him. And let's see what that sounded like on the Odd couple.
Rich Davis
I just think that Ja. With him in Memphis, it just might be the right time for change of scenery. And even for the franchise. The franchise don't feel as good as it did.
Clayton English
They got rid of Coach Rob.
Rich Davis
And that's because Jaw's there. I'm just saying. It doesn't feel like Memphis is going anywhere to me.
Danny G
Oh, all right, cool. So on the board so far, John and Rich, we moved around three. Here's the quote. So he's not going to show up. And you know why? Because he knows that. He owns Mike Tomlin. He owns the Steelers. He's going to get whatever he wants. Everybody in Pittsburgh owns a T.J. watt jersey. The Rooney small town. They don't want any backlash. And he's going to get whatever he wants. T.J. watt. Right now, the Steelers lead the league in defensive spending, and that's pre TJ Watt contract. Let's see. I'm sorry, you getting fired up. I know two teams in the NFL.
Mila
Oh, the multiple choice.
Danny G
I know, right? Do you know the two teams in the NFL going into this season with the lowest defensive spending? The Eagles and the Rams, both in the super bowl bubble? Quote me. Who Me? Was it A, Stephen A. Smith, B, Ben Maller, or C, Mike Florio?
Kavino
Covino.
Danny G
Kof.
Kavino
That was long winded. Ben Maller.
Danny G
John.
Rich Davis
Dan. Dan.
Mila
I'm say Florio. Mmm.
Kavino
All right, that's it.
Rich Davis
Go for it, Jon.
Danny G
No, I can't. Yeah, we're going to move on to the next one.
Kavino
I want to hear it.
Danny G
We'll move on to the next one. Here we go. Okay. All you have to do is rewind the clock. Two years ago, four years ago, six years ago. He says the same thing every year. If I taped an interview with Dak Prescott at this time, it's June. If I taped it at that time, click. He could do it in October. It's like he has the script. Quote me. Who me? Who said it was that Stephen A. Smith beat Rob Parker or C, Jonas Knox?
Kavino
John.
Danny G
John. Stephen A. Smith. It was Stephen A. Smith. Boom.
Kavino
Way to go, John.
Rich Davis
Way to go, Johnny.
Danny G
We got a winner. And let's hear what that sounded like.
Rich Davis
All you have to do is rewind the clock. Two years ago, four years ago, six years ago. He says the same thing every year. Stephen X.
Kavino
It's all they do.
Rich Davis
If I take. If I taped an interview with Dak Prescott at this time, it's true. It's true. If I taped it at this time, click. It'd be the same thing. If I did it four years ago, click. You could do it in October. It's like he has. It's like he has the script. Man.
Kavino
Jon. Way to go, buddy.
Rich Davis
John.
Danny G
Man, we are gonna mail a shiny CNR swiggy out to you there in Iowa.
Rich Davis
Thanks, fellas. I appreciate it.
Danny G
Y' all are great.
Kavino
And remember, just freeze your cocktails in it. Rich has lots of great tips.
Rich Davis
More hacks coming up in just a few minutes right here on Cavito.
Kavino
And, Rick, you know what, speaking of Stephen A. Did you see what happened to him recently at the NBA Finals with the solitaire? Obviously, you saw that, right?
Rich Davis
Of course. Yeah.
Kavino
But do you know that previously, Molly had warned them about shutting your phone down and shutting your computer down, because on first take, some of the camera shots, you could see what he was looking at. And she was like, stephen A.
Rich Davis
But I like big booties.
Kavino
Molly. She's like, put your phone down. He's like, nobody tell me what to do. And she's like, no, no, no. Just. I'm trying to help you out, Stephen A. She's like, put your. Because you could see what you're looking at because the camera's behind you. I'm good. I'm going to leave it, like. And then later on that night, of course, gets caught playing solitaire and. And the whole thing blows up in his face. When he had been forewarned earlier that, hey, people could see you on TV and what you're looking at. And that happened, and it became a is it a big deal? Sort of thing or not. People more shocked that he was playing solitaire.
Rich Davis
What is this, like the 2000s? Your first apps on your phone? I had a question for you before we go to DB Speaking of which.
Kavino
Sorry, I'm playing Snake right now. Rich, I'm busy.
Rich Davis
Do you think it's lame or totally funny when someone over. Over the shoulder see someone at a stadium, like, cheating or doing something dumb on their phone and then they try to blow them up on social media?
Kavino
I mean, yeah, I think it's kind of lame, but that's Stephen A. And that's. That's the difference. It's like he's the guy you expect to be tuned in. But, like, our boy KFC made the point. That's just another day at the office for him. It's just work for him.
Rich Davis
No doubt.
Kavino
Not surprised.
Rich Davis
Well, let's go to our guy, Dan Bio. Let's get an update. Db. What a finish to the College World Series.
Mila
It was.
Rich Davis
It was.
Mila
I will say that I think some of those are staged.
Rich Davis
Those ones stadium, I like the.
Kavino
Really?
Mila
The ones where the older person who's got the font, like, 72 size.
Rich Davis
Yes.
Mila
And reading those. I get a kick out of those. Yeah. That College World Series was a barn burner. Oregon State scored three times in the top of the ninth inning. To tie it at six. They had runners on second and third. Couldn't get them home though. And that proved to be the benefit for the Louisville Cardinals, who are able to advance on a sacrifice fly. They stay alive, winning 76 with the final run in the bottom of the ninth inning. So Louisville stays alive at the College World Series. Oregon State has been eliminated. Just underway at Major League Baseball, the Marlins have jumped out to a 2 nothing lead against the Philadelphia Phillies. I know you like that one. As the Mets start a series with the Braves tonight. Nick Castellanos is not in the lineup for the Phillies. Benched for making a comment after he was pulled from the game or that happened last night in the eighth inning. So Castellanos is not playing today. The Phillies trail the Marlins by a score of 2 to nothing. Are you talking to me? You guys talking to each other?
Danny G
Okay.
Mila
Okay. Cool. And I didn't know if he needed something. Hall of Fame skipper Joe Torrey. I'll point at Cavino for this. Will serve as an honorary coach for the American League during next month's All Star Game in Atlanta. Aaron Boone. Staff will also include guardians. Manager Steven Vogt tonight on the ice. Oilers and Panthers, 8 o' clock Eastern Time. Panthers up 32 in the series. They're going for back to back Stanley Cups. Edmondson trying to force a game seven will turn back to goalie Stuart Skinner. Pacers guard Tyrese Halliburton will have an MRI on his injured leg as the team believes he is dealing with a strained calf. ESPN says the Pacers hope to develop a plan for game six, depending on the severity of the strain. Guys, back to you.
Kavino
Thank you, Dan Baer and. Sorry to distract you, Dan. Dan Beyer. I was doing Shooter McGavins in the studio.
Rich Davis
He's getting ready for Happy Gilmore 2, which by the way, is a month away.
Kavino
Shooter. Actually, you know what I was doing? I was pointing out someone on TV to Rich. And it's someone that we saw in public years ago and came up to us both. And it's someone we had worked with and Rich had no idea who it was.
Rich Davis
Yeah, you ever work with someone, like forget a name and then they come up to you?
Kavino
But it was years later.
Rich Davis
It wasn't you, Dan. Blair, don't worry.
Kavino
Oh, someone on tv.
Mila
Sam, can I quickly.
Rich Davis
Go for it.
Mila
Sam called Andrew, who works on the fifth floor for us. Called him to his face yesterday. Called him Corey.
Rich Davis
There's also Corey, who is a spectacled, bald and kind of similar build. I see these guys like once or.
Mila
Twice to his face. We were there. He goes, what's up, Corey?
Kavino
Hey, what's up, Corey?
Rich Davis
And then I knew immediately that it was not Corey. It happens to all of us. It was an ESPN reporter that we had worked with, and I totally forgot her name.
Kavino
And she came up to us and started talking to Rich. And I could tell that Rich had no idea who she was. And I'm there like, oh, man, I know he knows. He has no idea.
Rich Davis
Cavino felt glory knowing that. I was stumped for a second.
Kavino
I knew who it was. Yeah.
Rich Davis
Let me give you one note real quick before we break for a second. The last run in the College World Series game. I will say this a cool move that I think more kids should implore in high school or college or even in the pros. It was a deep fly ball, right? So clearly there was no chance he was going to throw the guy out at home. But the center fielder deked a fake catch and a throw before he actually caught the ball, hoping to maybe get the guy from third to jump early on the tag up, which I thought is the only thing you really could have attempted in that situation. So I thought it was really great. Heads up baseball for the only thing you could really do in that scenario. I don't know if you saw that.
Kavino
No, I didn't see it. But I get what you're saying.
Rich Davis
You got to do what you got to do. All right. Hey, we got more CNR next, right here on FOX Sports Radio.
J.R. Martinez
The Medal of Honor is the highest military decoration in the United States. Recipients have done the improper, showing immense bravery and sacrifice in the name of something much bigger than themselves.

I know a lot of cops and they get asked all the time, have you ever had to shoot your gun? Sometimes the answer is yes. But there's a company dedicated to a future where the answer will always be no.
Rich Davis
Across the country, cops call this Taser the Revolution.
Unknown
But not everyone was convinced it was that simple.
Dan Flores
Cops believed everything that Taser told them.

Kavino
The Ice Age people that were here.
Rich Davis
Didn'T have a real affinity for caves.

I'm Clayton English. I'm Greg Lod and this is season two of the War on Drugs podcast. Sir, we are back in a big way.
Rich Davis
In a very big way. Real people, real perspectives.
Clayton English
This kind of star studded a little bit, man. We got Ricky Williams, NFL player, Heisman Trophy winner.
Kavino
It's just a compassionate choice to allow players all reasonable means to care for themselves.
Rich Davis

In this episode I'm joined by Anjali Sud, CEO of Tubi, for a conversation that's anything but ordinary. We dive into the competitive world of streaming how she's turning so called niche into mainstream gold, connecting audiences with stories that truly make them feel seen.
Rich Davis
What others dismiss as niche, we embrace as core. It's this idea that there's so many stories out there and if you can find a way to curate and help the right person discover the right content.
Dan Flores
The term that we always hear from.
Rich Davis
Our audience is that they feel seen.

Kavino
So again, hope you had an OKC sort of night. Okay. See, yeah, but do we stick a fork in this if Halliburton's done or.
Rich Davis
What I said to Cavino during the break? You know how there's always a series that's sort of close and then one of the big stars goes down.
Kavino
It's Curry in the playoffs. Yeah.
Rich Davis
Or you know, a bowl game and the QBs out. Or a playoff game in the NFL. And on the first series their running back goes down and you like the writings on the wall. I feel like that's sort of where we're at. I'm not saying I'm not excited about Thursday, but I would be shocked if.
Danny G
I hope, I hope not, because this has already felt like a letdown a little bit.
Rich Davis
I mean, if, if a, if a partly injured Halliburton plays and they somehow find a way to force a Game seven that would be fantastic for the NBA. But all signs are pointing in the direction of even if he plays, don't you feel like momentum and everything in the direction of OKC feels that way.
Kavino
Game six yesterday. I'm sorry, Game six Thursday. Game six tonight for your NHL. Again, a must win for Edmonton Florida up three, two. So enjoy your hockey tonight. Kavino
Our interview from yesterday, if you missed it with the goat Joey Chestnut got.
Rich Davis
You know what the guy said? He said, well, that's also there. Not only did he have a really funny conversation with us, which you could catch on the YouTube page and you could catch at Covino and Rich, he did say he wanted to put back 80 hot dogs. You and I debated whether or not he was going to try to break the record. He wants to put down 80 dogs.
Kavino
His record is 76.
Rich Davis
So his, his record with Nathan's is 76. But when he faced off against Kobayashi in that unsanctioned, yeah, like 83. So I think he can do it.
Kavino
We'll see this Fourth of July. But again, if you missed it, Fox Sports Radio's YouTube page.
Rich Davis
Now as far as Thursday, game six NBA finals, the Thunder favored by six and a half. So if you think the Thunder are going to run away with this with a, with a possibly injured Halliburton, now's the time to get that bed in because I feel like six and a half. If we do feel like maybe Halliburton is not going to be 100, which, I don't know, six and a half. There maybe is the sentiment that, hey, it's do or die in Indiana. They're going to come to play. I don't know, man. Six and a half. To me, if Halberton's not close to there, that's a great bet for okc. But what do I know? What do we all know, right?
Kavino
I know that in the meantime, in between time, after some hockey tonight, because I'll have it on, but I'm not going to fake the funk on a nasty dunk. I'm not glued into hockey, but I'll watch it. I'm so pumped about this Shaq show on Netflix.
Rich Davis
Power moves.
Kavino
Danny G. I'm so intrigued by this.
Danny G
I like it. I'm an Episode in.
Kavino
It's really good. Don't sleep.
Rich Davis
Am I going to tune in, bro?
Kavino
It's about him and Allen Iverson trying to bring back Reebok. Really cool show, and he's trying to recruit all these young players just based on who he is and what he did with Reebok. These young kids, these young G leaguers and high school kids that they're trying to scout have no idea what Reebok is. That's the hilarious part about it. They have no, no reference to it. No idea. They just know that Shaq and AI legends in the game sort of built that brand and that's what they wore. And if they want to be in business with Shaq, then that's what they're going to do. And it's really cool to see their pitch and it's cool to see that show because he's trying to make Reebok what it once was, which was a number two, a close number two after Nike in that world. And you know what else I notice? And you notice this in the NBA, but it's. It's really prominent in the show. Danny G. These young cats want nothing to do with high top basketball sneakers. They wear the low boys. And that's it.
Rich Davis
It's wild because I always think of a basketball sneaker as high top for your ankle support. But that's not even a care anymore.
Kavino
They don't even want like all their signature shoes are low top. And I thought it was like all about support and they have to support the ankle.
Rich Davis
I guess not.
Kavino
They like. No, we don't like it.
Rich Davis
It's so funny.
Danny G
It's about the look of it when.
Rich Davis
You guys talk about Shaq and Reebok as a kid, obviously the Jordan. But when I think of what made the most cultural impact, I mean, you had to think the Reebok pump was like, that was like maybe the coolest show of our childhood other than the Air Jordan, right?
Kavino
This is called Power Moves. It's on Netflix. It's worth the watch if you got nothing else going on.
Rich Davis
All right, guys, have a great Tuesday night. Until tomorrow. Arrivederci, baby.
Kavino
See you in the promised land. Goodbye. Goodbye, guys.
J.R. Martinez

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Episode: Covino & Rich - Make Room for Sports Spectacles
Release Date: June 18, 2025
Introduction to Sports Spectacles
In this engaging episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosts Covino and Rich dive deep into the evolving landscape of sports, focusing on the rise of sports spectacles. They explore how non-traditional sporting events are capturing public attention and reshaping the way audiences engage with sports entertainment.
The Rise of Spectacle Sports
Covino and Rich begin by highlighting the increasing popularity of unique and entertaining sports events that diverge from mainstream athletics. They discuss events like the planned race between Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles and NFL star Tyreek Hill, which, despite its cancellation, exemplifies the growing trend of blending athletic prowess with showmanship.
Covino [08:05]: "When I say spectacles, I mean Jake Paul type of events. Yeah, like silly sporting events."
Rich [18:20]: "You could love all the things I just said, NBA, NFL, Major League Baseball, but still say, oh, I want to watch Jake Paul fight and watch the Savannah Bananas. Why can't you like all that stuff?"
Social Media and Viral Moments
The hosts emphasize the role of social media in amplifying these sports spectacles. Viral moments, such as the heated interactions between Noah Lyles and Tyreek Hill or the intense fights like Lance Stevenson vs. Dwight Howard, are dissected for their ability to draw massive online audiences.
Covino [09:40]: "There's a growing market for that. Because there's a lot of people in the world of social media and younger people that really like and enjoy this stuff because it's not that serious."
Rich [11:50]: "He's fighting Chavez Jr. Not this weekend, the next weekend...because it's fun, and there's room for that."
Entertainment Factor vs. Traditional Sports
Covino and Rich discuss the balance between maintaining the integrity of traditional sports and embracing the entertainment value of spectacle events. They argue that while mainstream sports remain the foundation of athletic entertainment, spectacles offer a refreshing and engaging alternative that attracts a broader audience.
Covino [12:20]: "It's mindless fun, but yet still sports. You could have company over, still have this on, not be glued to it. It's just background fun to watch."
Rich [17:30]: "They never replace real sports for me. But I don't see why you wouldn't find interest in Tyreek Hill."
Economic Implications and Market Potential
The episode delves into the economic aspects of sports spectacles, highlighting the lucrative opportunities they present. Covino points out that salary potentials for participants in such events could rival those of traditional sports, making them an attractive career path for athletes who may not fit into mainstream leagues.
Rich [14:07]: "The salaries of a Savannah Banana is close to $100,000. If that number goes up, all of a sudden, the interest level of some young ballplayers might change."
Covino [14:36]: "It's a great existence. You're having fun touring, women love you, kids love you, families are going to see you."
Case Studies: Savannah Bananas and Jake Paul
Covino and Rich use specific examples like the Savannah Bananas and Jake Paul's boxing matches to illustrate the impact of sports spectacles. They analyze how these events successfully blend athleticism with entertainment, creating memorable and shareable moments that resonate with diverse audiences.
Danny G [13:10]: "It's not just the Savannah Bananas that are entertaining. Bananas don't win every game. And they're not the only ones doing these tricks and silly things."
Rich [16:10]: "I want to adjust Jake Paul's quote and then believe it. If he said he's the best thing to happen to boxing since Mike Tyson."
Audience Engagement and Future Trends
The hosts explore how audience preferences are shifting towards more interactive and entertaining sports content. They predict that the future will see a greater integration of traditional sports with these spectacles, enhancing overall viewer engagement and expanding the sports entertainment industry.
Covino [20:09]: "There's a growing market for it because Jake Paul said something that there might be some truth to...People are tuning in for whatever reason because it's fun."
Rich [23:30]: "There's millions and millions of people on a waitlist to get in. And there's college stadiums all over the country trying to get their bid on. Hey, come play here."
Interactive Segment: "Quote Me" Game
To engage the live audience, Covino and Rich introduce the "Quote Me" game, where listeners guess which sports commentator or personality made specific statements. This interactive segment not only entertains but also reinforces the episode's themes by highlighting memorable quotes related to sports spectacles.
Quote Example [32:51]:
"If you hear this, somebody tells you I said it, you eat this one, you own it. Stop telling people that the WNBA is going to overtake the NBA. It's not. It never will."
Answer: Lavar Arrington [33:37]
Conclusion: Embracing the Spectacle
Covino and Rich conclude by reaffirming their belief in the coexistence of traditional sports and sports spectacles. They advocate for a more inclusive approach to sports entertainment, where both serious athletics and entertaining spectacles can thrive, catering to a wide array of audience preferences.
Rich [18:31]: "Why can't you love the NFL, Major League Baseball, the NBA, college football, and still watch a Jake Paul fight or the Savannah Bananas?"
Covino [18:31]: "There's room for both, but it's growing, whether you like it or not."
