Levar Arrington
Hey, what's up, guys? It's Levar Arrington here from up on Game. Wanted to talk to you about a serious issue. Hate. You know, something personal that I have experienced and witnessed and watched is how the hate in our country is getting so out of control. It's at an all time high and people are facing way too much hate. A lot of people don't think it's a problem, but I do. I can recall growing up being in high school. One of my high school teammates, good dude too. Just happened to wear a shirt that was a derogatory shirt towards my racial group. It depicted Malcolm X moments after he was assassinated. And it just made me feel really, really sad. It made me feel upset and so many other emotions. And it's really because we're supposed to be a team, but it's going to take all of us to stop that sort of hate. As I mentioned, we are a team in this country. So let's take a break from hate so our team can regroup and regain our momentum. We need to take a time out against hate. Visit standuptoallhate.org to help and join me in calling for a time out against hate by following at what's up with hate? Or posting the blue square emoji.

It feels like we haven't talked in a while. Ben.
Daniel Cormier
Been. Been too long. I think you canceled on me one time.
Ben Askren
No, I didn't. Dude, don't. Don't lie.
Daniel Cormier
You almost canceled on me tonight, I think.
Ben Askren
No, I didn't. I was fine. I just. I just. I was getting out of practice. That was Louise. I think Louise just anticipates me canceling, so. Didn't he just cancel this?
Daniel Cormier
Well, it has happened a couple times.
Ben Askren
You're an idiot.
Daniel Cormier
There's a few times.
Ben Askren
All right, guys. Welcome to a brand new episode of Funky and the Champ that's been Askren. I'm Daniel Cormier. Ben P L. Last weekend, y'all rolled it up. Yeah, it looked like Kellen Walbert was wearing an Oklahoma State shirt today.
Daniel Cormier
Is that where he's going? Yeah, he made his commitment today.
Ben Askren
Is that your first cowboy?
Daniel Cormier
Yeah. It's still like, I. It still feels weird. Still feels weird. Like I don't know how to feel about it.
Ben Askren
It's absolutely great to have a kid going to Oklahoma State. I'm telling you, I had mine with Cody last year and yeah, he's loving it, dude. It's environment. There is next level and these kids are wrestling great. Dude, last week they killed the cliff.
Daniel Cormier
I know you went and watched him at cklv, right?
Ben Askren
I did, of course, man. What, you mean cowboys? Cowboys in the building more? Or you think you.
Daniel Cormier
You think you could beat Wyatt Hendrickson right now?
Ben Askren
No, no. Well, he was doing. He was putting the kid in the barbed wire the other day. Remember the barbed wire?
Daniel Cormier
Like, yeah, of course.
Ben Askren
He's the best, bro.
Daniel Cormier
I love him. The barbed wire. I love that you call it the barber. That's what call it, because looks at barbed wire, but there's. There's a whole bunch of names for that that are not the barbed wire.
Ben Askren
No, it's called the barbed wire. Yeah, all the. You know, I didn't call a bar arm a bar arm for white. Call it a chicken wing.
Daniel Cormier
Oh, yeah, I heard that.
Ben Askren
Of course, Call it a bar arm. Not like everybody else. All right, Ben. So UFC 310 was last weekend. Pantoja won. Little guys, right? Little guys are really making their mark in mixed martial arts. The best little guy in the world, I would argue, is Ilya Toporia. Right? Meaning little guy, 145, man.
Daniel Cormier
He might be mad at you calling.
Ben Askren
Him a little 145 and down. I call him little guy. Okay, 45, 35, 25. He's starting getting into the middle sized people at 55. Because they weigh 170, 180.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ben Askren
He said he's done, though. Beat Max Holloway, beat the champ, became the champ in Volk, Beat Max Holloway. Now he says he's done at 145 and he wants to fight at 155. What do you make of that? Like, that's kind of odd to me because it's not like he's out of challengers.
Daniel Cormier
I mean, I feel like it really came out of nowhere because it's like he's been having trouble making weight or, you know, anything like that. He just. Out of nowhere, and to your point, not out of challengers, you have Diego Lopes, who's, you know, gaining some popularity and gaining some steam, and then you got, I don't know how to say Ev Lov, who just beat Eloyev Loyev, who just beat Elaine last weekend. So you have these two guys who are up and comers, but, you know, there are a little bit bigger fish to fry at 155. You know, if he goes and beats Charles Oliver, huge name, executes, shot, and, you know, yeah, two division champion, that's a huge deal, I think. Don't relinquish your featherweight belt. Hold it. In case Lopes puts on A really great performance. Then go take him on.
Ben Askren
You know his name is Lopez, right? Like, I mean, it literally just looks like Lopez.
Daniel Cormier
I had this guy I knew. No, no, no, no. Because I had this guy who was Brazilian. Early training partner Lucas Lopes Lopez. So I, when I see it, I just like say it out of habit.
Ben Askren
Okay. I'm like, come on, you made fun.
Daniel Cormier
Of me for this before.
Ben Askren
I think it's like, clearly Lopez. But you know what, you know what it makes me think about when I hear him going, I don't want to fight Diego. I don't want to fight Avloyev, I don't want to fight Volkanovski again. It makes me think honestly that the fights to win the belt and in the fight to retain the belt were too big. So Jon Jones struggled with this a while back, right when he was fighting me and Rashad and all these big names. When he got to Anthony Smith and Thiago Silva and Dominic Reyes, he's like, it doesn't feel as exciting. I think for Toportia, he's like, I just beat the two greatest heavyweights, sorry, featherweights of the generation. Now I gotta fight Diego Lopez. Now I gotta fight evil. I just think that for him it might feel like the challenges aren't as great as the ones he had to go through in order to become the champion.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, I mean, there's definitely some truth to that. And yeah, you don't want to think that I want to say is this might be McGregor's fault. There's probably a lot of things that his fault.
Ben Askren
How can you blame Conor for that too?
Daniel Cormier
Man, hold on, you don't want say, you don't know what I'm going say back in the day, back in my day, you know, you, there was something to be said for defending your belt a few times. You think of the all time greats, Anderson Silva, George C. Pierre, Jon Jones, Demetrius Johnson, all defended their belts for a very long reign. Like it wasn't like they had one or two and then went up a waiter, did super fights or anything else. It was like, hey, you, you won your belt and then you defended whole bunch and that's what made them so great. And it's, it's actually kind of rare. We see that in mixed martial arts now. And you know, I thought at the very least, at the very least is saying, I want to be active, I want to fight. Like he said, you know, he said Islam's fighting in January and he said he won't be ready until May. So I want to fight, like soon. So I love that he's saying active. But as far as defending your belt in your division for a long time, I feel like that's something we haven't seen in kind of a long time, you know.
Ben Askren
Plus, I also don't like. This is a conversation I want to have with you. And I don't know if we have had this before, but I don't even know what constitutes a great title reign anymore. I don't know how many defenses is a great title reign anymore, considering it's so hard to defend championships. But I think for Toporia myself, I think personally it's like when you beat the best guys, especially the. The two guys that ruled the division for so long. Yeah, there can be a little bit of fatigue in there and it's not like muscle fatigue, it's mental fatigue. Right. Because you have to be so up to do what he did to Max Holloway and to do what he did to Volkanovski. And I don't care what people tell you, the only ones that believed that he would do what he did was Ilia Toporia and his team. You can't think that that was going to happen just being on the outside. He went and he knocked out Max Holloway. That doesn't happen. You don't knock out Max Holloway. He knocked out Volkanovski. You don't do those things back to back. So now to think, now I went fighting to establish veteran stars, people that sell pay per view, the BMF champion. So now I gotta fight a guy that's on the upswing, a guy that's on the rise, a guy that truly is who I was only a couple fights ago.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, but I don't know, that's. I feel like. I feel like we got to put that narrative to bed. It's bullshit. Just fight the best guy in your division.
Ben Askren
But it's not. It's not bullshit, Ben.
Daniel Cormier
It is a little bit.
Ben Askren
It's not.
Daniel Cormier
It is. This is as well as entertainment. This is sport.
Ben Askren
Ben, I get it.
Daniel Cormier
Let me. I'll ask you two questions. I'll prove you wrong right now. Right? Okay. College wrestling. What's the most impressive thing that's ever been done?
Ben Askren
Four NCAA titles, undefeated.
Daniel Cormier
Why? Because he had to do it every single match. American wrestling. American wrestling. What's the most impressive international feat? John Smith, six straight. Because he did it every single time.
Ben Askren
I understand, I understand you want consistency, but Ben.
Daniel Cormier
Yes.
Ben Askren
We are not talking about wrestling. We're talking about fighting and sport also. But that. But that is why? Let me tell you why. Right, okay. Let me tell you why. Guys lose to people that are viewed as.
Daniel Cormier
That's their fault. That's their fault. They can't say guys lose.
Ben Askren
I think that's why Jon Jones fought so bad against those guys, because of that fatigue, that having.
Daniel Cormier
You can't say fatigue because Jon Jones had, like, three years off from.
Ben Askren
No, but I'm not talking about muscle fatigue. I'm talking about mental fatigue when you got to get up. So great, bro. Even me, when I fought Jon Jones, even if I lost, I train harder because I recognize the challenge and all that came with beating him. I don't know if that's why Vulcan, it was different. I'm telling you.
Daniel Cormier
Okay, hold on. Let me. Let me. I got my book out here because I'm forgetting. I'm forgetting which chapter this is right now. So this is. This is chapter number eight, Extreme.
Ben Askren
This is. Man, this is. You're going to book.
Daniel Cormier
Respecting your opponent and wanting to crush your opponent. So I understand.
Ben Askren
No, no, hold on.
Daniel Cormier
The reason you're thinking this is. And you. And it's fair, right? But you think Uzdemir, he sucks. I'm going to beat him even if.
Ben Askren
I have a terrible day.
Daniel Cormier
And that's what some of these guys thinks. But then why. Why is159.0 so greatest? Because he was able to get up every single time. And I understand what you're saying about the mental fatigue of getting up, but, yes, if you're going to be elite champion, if you're be the greatest of all time, I want you to get up every time. I want you to be the best you can be every single time. That's why I want to call you the greatest of all time.
Ben Askren
So why in the world do you get guys like Islam going? I don't really want to do rematches. You saw last week, Panto.
Daniel Cormier
Why are fighters so particular?
Ben Askren
Nobody wants to do rematches. They're like, again, it's that fatigue of the same thing. And now it's like, you know and recognize how motivated you were when you were on the verge that champion is like, Ilya, who we're talking about, is kind of like, I'd rather go fight Charles Oliveira because I recognize the threat being so great that I have to get myself up. Because if we are to believe history, right? He just beat the two best featherweights we've seen in the last eight years.
Daniel Cormier
You know, who just defended.
Ben Askren
Why would Diego be any different?
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, I know. I agree with you. I mean, yes, I agree with you, you know.
Ben Askren
So you do agree with me.
Daniel Cormier
I agree. I agree with that. Diego Lopez is not quite on the level of the other guys you mentioned, but I think a great champion gets ready and prepares for all opponents. You respect the opponent, so you prepare adequately. Therefore, you don't have a letdown. I got two. Two things. Number one, Alex Pereira has now defended his light heavyweight title. I thought it was two times. It is three times. So he's someone who is actually now defending his title. And, you know, he's getting a lot of street cred for showing up and fighting again. But, man, does this mean our fighters actually, like, kind of soft? Because you think, like, football players generally. I thought of football players as being kind of wimpy, but these dudes got to show up, like, 20 weeks a year. Like, why these fighters got to show up three times? Right?
Ben Askren
But, Ben, that's not fair.
Daniel Cormier
Why is it not?
Ben Askren
Fighters don't show up three times. Fighters show up. Think about this. If you do three fights, three fights only, you train for 36 weeks a year to prepare. Yeah, that's more than half the year.
Daniel Cormier
But I'm sure football players train for that long, too.
Ben Askren
Doing 20 weeks like you just said.
Daniel Cormier
Hell no, you're wrong.
Ben Askren
They're doing 20 weeks of competition.
Daniel Cormier
20 weeks of competition. But I'm sure they're doing some practice before that, right?
Ben Askren
They're training, bro. But I'm saying, like, preseason 24, 25 weeks total. I'm telling you, it's different. Dude, I can't believe you. What are you gonna tell me next? That basketball players get up at 5:00 in the morning and get up 100 shots? I mean, that is literally, like, you're going crazy to me right now. I don't understand.
Daniel Cormier
Well, I'm just saying, like, I. I don't think if we're. If we're talking about competition and we're talking about being, like, the greatest of all time and being a great champion. I don't think it's insane to expect someone to. To challenge, defend their belt, say, three times a year.
Ben Askren
And I think three is fair.
Daniel Cormier
Three is fair. And. And whoever wants to show up, I have the belt. This is my weight class. Whoever wants to show up, come on. I'll whip your ass. And then, you know, you did that for a little while and.
Ben Askren
So would you pick Lopez over Ilia?
Daniel Cormier
No, of course not.
Ben Askren
Well, Luis is over here saying crazy right now, like in the chat. I think the poor Luis is so stupid. I don't know why Luis does that. I'm like, shut up, Luis. Guys, this is what Luis said. I think the Poria doesn't want the Lopez fight. Lopez is a monster, and he's been public about being unafraid of Ilia. You're gonna. When I'm sitting there with Ilya, Luis, and you're sitting there behind the camera. Don't. Don't be sad when I tell Ilya what you said. No, Diego said, I'm telling you I respect everyone, but I'm not afraid of anyone. If there's anything I don't have, it's fear. I think I've shown that in all my fights. I've shown that I'm not afraid of anyone. As many times as he wants to point to the ground, I will plant my feet in the middle of the cage and throw down. It's that easy. I wouldn't advise that against the Toporia.
Daniel Cormier
So if Deoria wants to move up, whatever, cool, I see it. Then move up. Right? But if you're really a 145 pounder, then just stay and defend your division. You have at least two more solid defenses. Lopes and Lopez. And Evelyn. Evelyn, whatever his damn name is. Yes, him. You have at least two more solid defenses. And then maybe. Maybe gets a little thin after that, right? Maybe. Maybe you throw Bryce Mitchell or something again.
Ben Askren
Bryce Mitchell already? Doug, he beat Bryce bad.
Daniel Cormier
Said again.
Ben Askren
I know. It's so bad. Hey, Ben, how about the fact that IL has a $2 million gym already in his basement?
Daniel Cormier
We talked about that. His what? His wife is there. Was he married into money or something?
Ben Askren
Oh, he did.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah. We talked about this one time a couple months ago.
Ben Askren
Man, that's crazy. All right, guys, it's the winter time. You know, like it's kind of cold outside. But that don't stop the boy DC from getting out and about and enjoying all kinds of live events. Well, I'm in the details. Let me just say this.
Daniel Cormier
I actually stay in the details of the product.
Alex Kancherowitz
And on Friday's analyst Ron John Roy and I recap the week's news, looking at everything that's happened in the world of AI. That is an emoji red flag for me. I'm putting it up. Three emoji red flags.
Ben Askren
They told me they're going to fix Siri Adrian.

Ben Askren
Listen to this dude. Did you see me, Rob D. Wallace, really beating up that guy the other day?
Daniel Cormier
You told me it was that he was a plant, though.
Ben Askren
I swear, bro.
Daniel Cormier
The guy in the audience. The guy in the audience, you told me.
Ben Askren
Did you see it, though? Did you see the pictures? I said, dude, you can look it up. Look on the Internet, fan. That Marab hit you like the Internet. Look at it on your phone, bro. There's, like, a picture of Morab fighting this guy. Somebody had an explanation. Next thing you know, I see the guy in pictures with Khabib and Umar. He's, like, with Umar's team.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, so, I mean, he probably deserved to get punched in, right?
Ben Askren
Wait, why? Why would he deserve to get punched?
Daniel Cormier
Because Umar was antagonizing Morab at the. At the.
Ben Askren
That was weird, though. Like, why was Marab so mad at the press conference?
Daniel Cormier
I don't know. He was mad. I mean, maybe there's some Georgian. Georgian and Russian heat or something.
Ben Askren
He said, you need to be a man first. Show respect to Umar. Yeah, but I don't know what happened.
Daniel Cormier
How about the hot tub picture? I like that he brought that up.
Ben Askren
What hot tub is a hot tub picture?
Daniel Cormier
Stop. You've never seen a hot tub.
Ben Askren
I've never seen it. What picture?
Daniel Cormier
Are you kidding me right now? Where to? God, you're lying. Daniel, you're messing with me. Louis, get us this hot tub picture.
Ben Askren
He's a teammate. Yes, Louise said put it in the chat.
Daniel Cormier
Put it in the chat. I can't believe. Hold on. He's gonna get it for us, and you're gonna.
Ben Askren
What is it, though?
Daniel Cormier
It's all the Dagestanis in a hot tub together.
Ben Askren
Luis, could you please bring it up? This is not real, bro.
Daniel Cormier
That's real.
Ben Askren
That is a fake picture.
Daniel Cormier
No, it's not.
Ben Askren
That is a fake picture, bro. I can't believe Louise edited this.
Daniel Cormier
That is real. That's real. I can't believe you've never seen this.
Ben Askren
Is this real thing?
Daniel Cormier
Yes, it's real. Have you really never seen it?
Ben Askren
Single rep. This is real.
Daniel Cormier
That's what I'm saying. Like, listen, Daniel, you can sit in the song with the boys. You ain't sitting this close to the boys.
Ben Askren
What's a small hot Tub.
Daniel Cormier
That's why they all in there. Yes.
Ben Askren
I never heard this.
Daniel Cormier
I had no idea what he was talking about.
Ben Askren
I didn't realize that picture, it's edited.
Daniel Cormier
No, it's not.
Ben Askren
That's real edited. Louise did it on the spot.
Daniel Cormier
Louise did it. Ask your friend Khabib.
Ben Askren
That is a crazy photo. Too many people in the hot tub.
Daniel Cormier
They edited my real hot dog.
Ben Askren
And you can't even get mad, though, because you sit in the sauna with 30 people in an eight.
Daniel Cormier
I don't sit that close.
Ben Askren
I don't have 30. We have sat 30, Ben.
Daniel Cormier
I still remember 2008. You came into the sauna and you're like, I gotta get some fluids before I cut weight. I'm watching you drink. I'm like, this is a terrible strategy. Like, you're just drinking. You just got to sweat that back out.
Ben Askren
But Ben, let me ask you this. What OTC sauna? It's made for eight people.
Daniel Cormier
I never said that many people.
Ben Askren
We sat in there, 30 people at one time.
Daniel Cormier
Oh, you are lying, man. Get the pictures.
Ben Askren
Are you? Well, we don't have any pictures, but it was hot.
Daniel Cormier
I never sat with that many people.
Ben Askren
Now that I think about it. We called it the Russian sauna. It was a 30 minute sauna. You remember that? It was like a 30 minute straight sauna.
Daniel Cormier
Oh, my gosh. The Russian was not that many people in there, though.
Ben Askren
There were 30 people in that freaking that sauna.
Daniel Cormier
I can't believe on this one they're gonna be upset.
Ben Askren
Is it bad? Is it bad that they're fighting these guys, though? Like fans?
Daniel Cormier
I mean, you know, if that's so dangerous, actually an enemy combatant, then I suppose have Adam. But yeah, I generally don't think fighting fans is a good idea.
Ben Askren
Hey, that boy. That boy. Marab said, they asked me, Rob, what was their favorite Umar and Islam, their favorite moment together? Morab said, how about a Jacuzzi? How about you said you could come? Umar said, I was not there, dog. This is real, I guess a real bottle. Dang, dog, that's so crazy. I'm just happy that my friends can all, like, embrace being close to each other like that. That means they're real friends, real teammates. They love each other.
Daniel Cormier
That's a little too close.
Ben Askren
I don't know.
Daniel Cormier
It's like, I don't want I. Ben.
Ben Askren
You can't say nothing when we wrestle. Some of the positions that you get in in wrestling with the funk, one.
Daniel Cormier
Versus another, it's not seven dudes.
Ben Askren
You're so crazy. You're here. So crazy. Hey. And Nate Diaz was fighting with Islam and him, too.
Daniel Cormier
He fights with everybody except him and Nate. Nick don't get in the ring really anymore because. Was it Nick? Didn't they reschedule Nick like, two or three times?
Ben Askren
The fight. Vicente Luque.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah.
Ben Askren
Submitted Timber Good Inbo the other day.
Daniel Cormier
What did you say?
Ben Askren
Timba Goodimbo. His name is Timber Garimbo. That's not a real name, is it? Is that real?
Daniel Cormier
I remember I heard Terry Brown say, what are those damn names of the airports in. In. In Moscow, Doma, Deo and Shermanovo or something? I'm like, bro, you made that shit up. Like, that's not the real name.
Ben Askren
You thought I made up that name? Timber Gmbo.
Daniel Cormier
Yes.
Ben Askren
His name is Timo Gmbo. I swear to God, he's the guy that the Rock bought the house for.
Daniel Cormier
I still think you're making it up.
Ben Askren
Hey, you.
Daniel Cormier
You know what?
Ben Askren
You know what's kind of funny? I saw Terry. I saw Tom Brands in. In Denver a couple weeks ago. They just got done beating Oregon State in a duel meet, and he w. I'm walking through the airport after leaving Salt Lake City, and somebody grabbed me by the arm, and it was Tom Brands. And he didn't. Bro, he didn't say nothing. He grunted at me a few times, just walked away.
Daniel Cormier
No, he didn't.
Ben Askren
I. Like, that's right. God, I swear to God. He goes, pry. We hugged. We hugged five times. Like, we hugged five times. When I see Tom Brands, bro, I get super excited because I'm, like, a massive fan of his. We hugged five times.
Daniel Cormier
Le doesn't believe this right now. Are you making this up?
Ben Askren
I swear to God.
Daniel Cormier
Oh.
Ben Askren
We were standing in front of the restaurant, and I was like. He grabbed me, and he goes, proud. Proud of you. Proud of you. I said, coach, I gave him a hug. I was like, man, it's so good to see you. And I hugged him again. And then I was like, I didn't know what to do after that, so I hugged him again.
Daniel Cormier
Oh, my God.
Ben Askren
Like, five times. It's crazy.
Daniel Cormier
All right, so, hey, we wanted to Talk about UFC311, and you invited me, but now I've made fun of the Dagestanis.
Ben Askren

Ben Askren
Yeah, they're going to throw bottles at.
Daniel Cormier
You, but usually 311. Armando versus Islam. Islam gonna be a lot of fun.
Ben Askren
