Jack Della Madalina is the UFC Welterweight Champion of the world. Not many people thought that going in to the weekend, especially the people in the know. Guys, today's episode is brought to you by Total Wireless, the official wireless provider of UFC. They're in your corner with unlimited 5G data. That won't slow you down. Not many thought Jack would win, but immediately, once Jack won, it was right on to the next. And it's been opinion after opinion after opinion between whether or not Bilal Muhammad just fought wrong and how Jack De La Maddalena fought right. What happens next after the fight? So much clarity came from it. So what I feel now, and this is what we'll get into today's video, is it seems like it's Islam versus Jack De La Maddalena. Joaquin Buckley had something to say about Islam in the way that he approached it, especially he said, considering Islam called Bilal his brother. It says we're getting Ilia versus Charles Oliveira now. For the UFC Championship at International Fight Week. Also, Islam Makhachev is saying he's not giving up his championship. So there is a lot of moving parts when it comes to 155, 170 right now. Let's start with what we know, all right? At least what we feel we know. Jack Della Madeleina, we know this, won the belt last week in beating below Muhammad. All right. After winning the belt, he had his eyes set on Islam Makachev. But before that, some of the most high level fighters weighed in on the fight of Bilal Muhammad. And one that really stood out to me was Robert Whitaker. So Robert Whitaker was watching the fight and as we were watching the fight, it was like round one, two, three. We kept going. There's just not enough wrestling. Why is Bilal not wrestling? It was very evident to not only us, but to Robert Whitaker also. As Whitaker goes, why didn't we see more wrestling? I can't help but feel like Bilal was trying to point out, make a point, striking with Jack for the first three rounds. And if that's the case, that's ridiculous. Jack is amazing at that mid range boxing, which he showed this weekend, which was so crazy. He looked amazing in winning that belt, defended every takedown. He did just a great job of becoming the world champion. But right away he gets asked about Makhachev. I did it inside the Octagon. Into it he goes, he, he's, he's great. He's a truly elite fighter. I can't wait to fight him. He's done more pound for pound. I thought Jack Dela did just about everything right in the fight from the entry to the post fight to end the fight. I thought he did everything right in that fight. Even the response to Makhachev inside the octagon. Then after the fight, he was asked at the press conference about Makachev and he said, come and get it. I'm going to get you back for Volk. Because, you know, obviously Islam beat Volkanovski two times. And Volkanovski, the legend, the featherweight champion once again in the UFC, is held in such high regard by these fighters that you could tell when I asked Jack Della Maddalena about standing along those guys, those great champions like Robert Whitaker, like Alexander Volkanovski, it felt like that was the first time I got some true raw emotion out of him. Inside the Octagon, he was still so measured. That's one thing you know about this kid. When you meet him, when you talk to him, whether he's in front of a camera or behind the camera. He's like this in regards to who Jack Della Madeleina is. In that moment when I said that, I could see his lip quiver a little bit and he almost broke down because he's probably watching this for so long, watching those great Australian champions from Rob to Alexander to now view himself in that way. It was almost like it hit him inside the octagon, like, wow, I really am a UFC world champion. Like those guys that I looked up to for so long. But Islam right away responded and he said, you are not Volk. He tweeted in response, I will show you a different level. Keep my belt clean. Makachev also wrote, the time is now to become a double champion, which we'll get into here in a second, obviously, inshallah, let's go become a double champion. But you see those guys now already know, hey, we're gonna build this thing. We're gonna try to make people tune into this thing. They're gonna watch regardless. It's a fantastic fight, It's a big time fight. And if Jack Dela looks the way he did last weekend, it's very, very intriguing fight because we've never seen Islam Makacha fright up at £170. We've never seen it. We've never seen him have to compete up 50 more pounds. Yes, he is a big dude, but in terms of full on stature, is he big as Jack Della Maddalena is? And also if he thought he may fight International Fight Week, how small had he gotten and how much time does he have to put the weight back on the right way before he moves up to 170? Lot of questions, lot of questions. But it's a big time fight and we'll get into the X's and O's as we get closer. But right now we're talking the story, we're talking the story. We're talking about a guy that just beat Bilal Muhammad to become champion, now getting child by the 155 pound champion who we thought, or at least it seemed. I was literally giving the UFC all this praise last week about saying, I'm not holding up divisions anymore. You want to go up, give up the belt. Ilia Toporia did it and I even said, you can go back to the video. I go, Islam's having to do it if he wants to chase a 170 pound belt. But he said he's not giving up the title. He actually wrote Islam said, this Saturday's main event will define my next move. But regardless of the outcome of that fight, I'm not going to vacate my lightweight title. We might get a real contender there. All right, guys, it's the greatest time of the year, the NBA playoffs. Look, I don't care if you watch basketball all season or not. So we all made mistakes, right? But owning up to them is the right thing to do. But we all know Degree Cool Rush deodorant well last year they changed the formula and it did not go over well with the fans. The grease, whole thing. It turns up sweat and other protection when you turn up the effort. And good thing it does cuz Cool Rush fans really turned up the effort to bring back the OG formula. One guy even started an online petition and degree Listen they admitted they effed up and are bringing back that OG Cool Rush scent back. And it's exactly how you remember it. Cool, crisp and fresh. So essentially it seems like Makhachev is open to bouncing up and down. We have not seen anyone do this but Amanda Nunes go up to 145, beat fighters like Megan Anderson and those girls, and then go down to 135 and do what she did as the bantamweight champion. It seems and feels like Makhachev thinks he can do the same thing. That's difficult, that's hard, especially once you get that belt at the next weight class. Why do I have to cut the weight when I'm the champion here? It's a very, very hard thing. You know, Islam, if he is able to do this, would further cement himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time. He really would. He would cement himself as one of the greatest of all time. I think he's already one of the greatest of all time. But by going up to 170, one of the things that he would not do was fight Bilal Muhammad and they were very clear about the hindman Bilal Muhammad about not wanting to fight each other. But then Joaquin Buckley writes crazy that you were praying for your so called brother's downfall. That was Joaquin Buckley. So not only does Islam have an opportunity to become a world champion, he's already got guys up at 170 taking notice. Buckley, who fights Kamaru Usman now in what could be a number one contenders fight. Ian Garry is very aware of Islam Makhachev. He might be in a position where one more fight and he's the number one contender. Obviously he's fighting against the champion, Jack Della Madeleina. He has so many options. But by leaving 155, it makes for a little bit of a hole because people want to see him fight Ilia Topuria. That's the only negative I've ever seen or have seen out of this whole situation is that some of people are disappointed that now they feel like they won't get Makachev versus Ilya Taporian. You know, there's a lot, there's a lot. I don't think Makhachev was praying for Bilal to lose. I don't, I know the guy. I don't think that that's in him to want to see one of his friends lose for himself to gain an opportunity. But what Buckley is doing, from the trolling of Ian Garry to now trying to target Islam Makachev, it's one of the only ways he's truly going to find his way into those big fights that he wants so desperately. He beats Kamaru Usman, obviously he'll be in line to get a great fight, but if he, if he doesn't shake the bucket enough, that big fight may end up being one of the more dangerous guys and not for a championship. So I get what Buckley is doing because if he can get Makhachev or Maddalena to Della Maddalena to pay attention, to acknowledge him, to even be pissed off at him, then it puts him at the forefront of everybody's mind. It's crazy what's happening at 170 right now. And the boy Toporia is going to go about his business and fight Charles Oliveira for the belt. But even on the Sunday after he's like hitting pads in his gym saying good morning to Islam, he's like not intimidated by Islam at all. And neither is Islam of Ilia Tapori. And that's why I think people are disappointed that they're not getting this fight because I think they feel when they watch it that they would be watching two of the greatest fighters in the world finally lock and lock themselves into the octagon. Lot going on. Lot going on. Great performance by Jack Dela last weekend. Big time fight coming up with Islam Makachev. Big time fight between Du Bronx and Ilya Tapuya at International Fight Week. But what happens next for all parties involved whenever we do get more answers? Because last week we got answers to the start, now we're going to be in the middle. I want to see what the answers are like at the end when we know that who stands amongst the greats because imagine you got to think that if Ilia Toporia wins the 155 pound belt and Islam wins the 170 pound belt, he's just going to want to go up to fight him there. Or maybe he beats Charles Oliveira and as Islam said, I'm not giving up my title. He decides to go back down to fight Ilia Toporia. There's so much going on, also crazy that, that this has become almost an afterthought. But Tom Aspinall has now said he's just done with the Jon Jones conversation and either he gets a fight with Jones or he fights somebody else. He's essentially done with it. He's done waiting. He's not doing it. While Jones is somewhere out in Thailand coaching a reality show, which, by the way, I was offered to coach against him prior, but I didn't, I didn't accept it. I can't do a month in Thailand opposite side Jon Jones, especially when I can't fight that dude no more. I mean, he beat me when I was fighting. I can't really fight today. I'm 46 years old. Like, come on, man. I mean, I would do it for fun, but I'm not ready to spend a month in Thailand. Guys, big things happening. I hope they make these fights and I hope that we continue to get big news that we can always look so forward to. So guys, once again, thank you so much for all the support last week in UFC 315. The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Episode Summary
Episode Title: Daniel Cormier REACTS to Islam Makhachev vs. Jack Della Maddalena + Turning Down Jon Jones
Release Date: May 18, 2025
Host: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
Guest: Daniel Cormier
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, host Daniel Cormier delves deep into the recent developments in the UFC, focusing primarily on the high-stakes matchup between Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena. Cormier provides an insightful analysis of the fight, its implications for the UFC lightweight and welterweight divisions, and addresses the ongoing saga involving Jon Jones and Tom Aspinall.
[02:30]
Daniel Cormier begins by celebrating Jack Della Maddalena’s unexpected triumph over Bilal Muhammad to claim the UFC Welterweight Championship. "Not many people thought that going into the weekend, especially the people in the know," Cormier remarks, highlighting the shock and excitement surrounding Maddalena's win.
[04:15]
Cormier emphasizes Maddalena's performance: "He was amazing with his mid-range boxing and defended every takedown effectively." This victory positions Maddalena as a formidable champion, raising questions about his next challenger.
[06:45]
The core of the discussion revolves around the potential showdown between Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena. Cormier outlines the complexities of this matchup, noting Makhachev’s prowess and Maddalena’s strategic acumen.
Notable Quote:
"What happens next after the fight? So much clarity came from it. It seems like it's Islam versus Jack Della Maddalena." [07:20]
[08:30]
Cormier highlights insights from Robert Whitaker, who critiqued Bilal Muhammad’s lack of wrestling in his fight against Maddalena:
"Why didn't we see more wrestling? It's very evident Bilal was trying to make a point with striking, and if that's the case, that's ridiculous." [09:10]
This analysis underscores the strategic depth both fighters bring to the octagon, setting the stage for a highly anticipated rematch.
[10:05]
A significant portion of the conversation explores Islam Makhachev’s reluctance to vacate his lightweight title despite opportunities to compete in higher weight classes.
"Islam is saying he's not giving up his championship. This is a very, very hard thing," Cormier explains [11:00].
[11:30]
Cormier draws parallels with Amanda Nunes, who successfully navigated multiple weight classes, suggesting that Makhachev could emulate her strategy.
"If Islam is able to do this, it would further cement himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time." [12:10]
This discussion highlights the strategic decisions fighters must make to maximize their legacies while managing weight class dynamics.
[13:45]
Daniel Cormier addresses the backlash from fighters like Joaquin Buckley, who has publicly criticized Makhachev:
"Joaquin Buckley writes crazily that you were praying for your so-called brother's downfall." [14:00]
Cormier posits that Buckley's controversial statements are a bid to position himself for bigger fights, potentially against Makhachev or Maddalena, thereby increasing his visibility in the UFC hierarchy.
[16:20]
Looking ahead, Cormier speculates on the possible outcomes and future matchups post-Makhachev and Maddalena fight:
"Imagine if Ilia Topuria wins the 155-pound belt and Islam wins the 170-pound belt. He's just going to want to go up to fight him there." [16:45]
He also discusses the potential for Ilia Topuria to challenge Charles Oliveira for the lightweight title, adding another layer to the division’s dynamic.
[18:10]
Cormier shifts focus to Jon Jones, addressing his prolonged absence and the hesitancy among fighters to challenge him.
"Tom Aspinall has now said he's done with the Jon Jones conversation. He's not doing it. He's done waiting." [19:00]
Cormier shares personal insights, revealing that he was offered a chance to coach against Jones in Thailand but declined due to the demanding nature of such a commitment. This segment underscores the challenges Jones presents to contenders and the broader implications for the UFC's heavyweight division.
[21:50]
Daniel Cormier wraps up the episode by reflecting on the thrilling developments within the UFC and expressing optimism for future fights and storylines.
"Big things are happening. I hope they make these fights and we continue to get big news that we can always look forward to." [22:30]
He encourages listeners to stay engaged with the UFC’s evolving landscape, hinting at more high-profile matchups on the horizon.
Daniel Cormier on Maddalena’s Performance:
"He kept defending every takedown. He did everything right in that fight." [04:15]
Robert Whitaker’s Critique:
"Why didn't we see more wrestling? It's very evident Bilal was trying to make a point with striking." [09:10]
Cormier on Makhachev’s Legacy:
"If Islam is able to do this, it would further cement himself as one of the greatest fighters of all time." [12:10]
On Joaquin Buckley’s Strategy:
"Joaquin Buckley writes crazily that you were praying for your so-called brother's downfall." [14:00]
Cormier’s Reflection on Jon Jones:
"He's done waiting. He's not doing it." [19:00]
This episode offers a comprehensive analysis of the current UFC landscape, particularly focusing on the strategic maneuvers of top fighters like Islam Makhachev and Jack Della Maddalena. Daniel Cormier provides valuable insights into the implications of their fights, the shifting dynamics of weight classes, and the enduring influence of Jon Jones in the heavyweight division. For UFC enthusiasts, this episode is a must-listen, encapsulating the excitement and strategic depth that defines the sport.
