What'S up guys? It's Thursday, June 19th and today's episode is brought to you by Total Wireless, the official wireless provider of UFC. They're in your corner with unlimited 5G data. That won't slow you down. You know, it feels like we are always talking about Jon and Jones and what he's going to do and is he going to fight? Is he not going to fight? What's it going to mean to the organization? What's it going to mean to his fight career, his legacy? Well, finally, it finally feels like we have some sort of idea of what he wants to do going forward. Dana White was on Jim Rome yesterday and Jim Rome asked him directly, how long are you planning to wait? Dana said, we're probably going to have something in two weeks. That's a number that's defined, which is something we didn't have before. Before was very soon. He said, in about two weeks we'll have something for you. Well, we didn't even have to wait two weeks because Jon Jones spoke first. Jon Jones was on a podcast the other day, and I'm taking this from MMA Junkie, where he was sitting with a guy and they were talking about where he's fought before, asked him if he ever fought in Canada. All this other stuff. And the guy asked him, what's next? You know, what's next as the champion. And John had some very interesting things to say. He said, I don't want to say that I'm retired, because let me pull this up. In Luis's text messages, he sent me a picture. I don't want to say that I'm retired because, geez, look at this stupid ass. Okay? He's actually talking to Folsom mma. Okay, first off, here we go. I don't want to say that I'm retired because fighting is in my blood right now. I could really care less about fighting. I've been doing it my whole life at a very high level. And when the itch comes back, if it comes back, then I'll do it with my whole heart. Let's break that down first. Let's break that down first. Jon Jones has been fighting at a super high level, and for that we have commended him on many occasions about how he has been able to not only fight in one era of mixed martial arts, this dude has literally been able to navigate his way through three different eras of mixed martial arts. I'm talking the first ever become the champion. When he fought Shogun and he fought Machida and he fought against Vitor, those guys were all hanging around that belt Rampage Forrest, they were kind of playing hot potato with the belt. Jonathan comes in, beats Shogun, dominant fashion, controls that era, brings stability to the belt. Once that is done, Rashad Evans, who was once a mentor to him, is a bit of that new era of Guy in terms of a champion, old end of that era into the new. He beats Rashad Evans, then he beats Alexander Gustafson, who belongs to the new era, and then he beats me, who belongs to the new era. He's in that era of Guy and he's navigating his way through that. Then Jon Jones goes and beats Anthony Smith. Thiago Santos, he beats Dominic Reyes. Another era of Guy, who. Honestly, guys, I didn't even know those guys were in my weight class when I was the champion because they were so far off the radar. Jon was able to stay long enough to not only be there when they were fighting, but to beat them three eras of mixed martial arts and do it at a level that was crazy. So you want to give him grace in that sense, because nobody gets to do that. Time catches up with everyone. We have said that time and time again. So you want to give him grace in that respect. But what took so long? What took so long? What took so Long for you to tell us, hey, if it comes back, I'll come back. But right now it's not there. What took so long? You will get grace in that regard by not saying something, by waiting to say something. You gave people the idea that you just don't want to fight this guy. Seriously, that you just don't want to fight this guy who represents another era of fighter. So does Ciro gone. He beat Stipe Miocic. But come on, guys, we all know Stipe was done at that point. But I saw some clips recently of Stipe landing on John. That's. I don't even remember him doing anything positive in that fight because he seemed so far behind Jones. But when I saw those clips, he is actually landing. And if he was landing, I'm imagining Tom Aspinall will land. But what you guys can't forget, this guy has a good chin. Jon Jones beat me when I bit. When I was at my best. I was never better in my career than that fight in Anaheim. I was never better a mixed martial artist. Whether I beat Stipe, whether I beat Derrick Lewis and Dan Henderson, all those guys, I was never better than that night. He beat me in Anaheim and he beat me. That's where my idea that he isn't afraid of Tom Aspinall comes from. Because if he could beat me, then I feel like he could beat anyone in mixed martial arts. But by taking so long, he's now giving you the idea, well, he's afraid. So then he goes on to speak about Aspinall more and he says, Aspinall is not in a position to excite me. It's the truth. Because if I whip his ass, it's going to be the next guy. There's going to be a whole new fan base of somebody that everybody believes in. That might have worked before. That's not working this time. That's where Jones loses me. That's where Jones loses me. I get it that he's seen the great hope of someone that's going to beat him. In the past, there's never been someone like this. Now, I just told you, I was never better than that fighting Anaheim and he beat me. Let me tell you why it's never been someone like Aspinall because of the way the rules have changed. If this was Jon Jones at 28 years old, no worry for him. And Aspinall would not be the biggest threat to him. The reason Aspinall is the biggest threat to him today is because he's 38 years old, because he's Lived a life of excess, of excess, partying, living, doing all those things that back in the day got him into trouble. Sure, we have not seen him doing those things yet. I mean, obviously he still has a good time. I don't know if it's to the extent that he did before, but Aspinall is the biggest threat today because the roles have reversed. At 28 years old, Jon would have seen Tom a million times over and fought him already. But John, at 38, recognizes that this dude's a little better. He's not afraid, like I told you guys a long time ago, just doesn't want to get knocked out. He doesn't want that. Jon Jones prefers to let his legacy stay as is, with the caveat that he didn't fight Tom Aspinall and run the risk of fighting Tom Aspinall and getting beat by Tom Aspinall. That's where the difference lies. That's where the difference lies. The difference lies in him knowing that he is a tad bit slower. We can all see, we all have eyes. He's a tad slower. It happens when you start at 19 and at 21, become the world champion. You've been the world champion for 17 years. Of course you're going to miss a step, but you know who has it? It's Tom. And that's where the dangers lie. That's where the, the, the worry comes from. So that's why we're seeing a man say, this guy doesn't really excite me, when in reality it's exciting, but it's also very scary. So he preferred to leave that legacy intact, knowing in time everybody forgets, hey, he fought everybody else because we should not judge him based off one thing. We really shouldn't. But for a long time, people asked for him to go up to fight a heavyweight against guys like Cain Velasquez, Stipe in his prime, and he was very hesitant about doing that. He fought Stipe at 41, no problem. He fought Cyril Gane, who's at Limited, no problem. Now he's got a guy in front of him that is very dangerous, very hungry, and he's kind of going, I don't really want to do this, but, guys, guess what? Maybe it's just over. Sometimes you just know it's over. Chael and I discussed this a while ago. Sometimes it's just over. And when you know, you walk away. Unfortunately, he waited so long that it's going to look like it looks. So right now, it's time to strip him. Strip him. It's time to strip him. He was talking to Foolson mma, he was talking to Kyle from the Nelk Boys and he said this.
He's just not. He's not in a position. He's not in a position to, like, excite me. It's just the truth. It's gonna be this. It's gonna be. It's gonna be the next guy. There's gonna be a whole new fan base of somebody who everybody believes in. I've done this my whole adult life.
There it is, him talking to Kyle. That's the actual clip of him talking about Tom Aspinall and saying how Tom needs him and he's telling the truth. You know he's telling the truth. No matter how great Tom Aspinall is, he needs that fight. He needs that fight to go over. It's a tale as old as time in all of sports, all of wrestling, all of everything. When the Lakers became the best and Magic Johnson took over from Larry Bird, he had to go through Larry Bird. When Michael Jordan became the world champion, he had to go through Magic Johnson. You feel the error. Switch. Jon Jones will, if he doesn't fight Tom Aspinall, stop that from happening. But ultimately it's time to strip him. He doesn't want to fight this guy if he ain't going. It does not sound like he's going to fight. It's time to take the belt. It's time to move on and hope that that Itchy speaks about comes back. And if it does, stick him in there with Tom Aspen. I'll give him no other choice. I gotta be honest with you. I would make him fight Tom even if Tom wasn't the champion, because I think that's the fight that matters. Tom Aspinall's ready. Tom's gonna go fight someone else. That dude was pissed that he has not been booked, but we're gonna see what happens. But guys, finally today we got some answers that Jon Jones says he's pretty much done. I don't want to say I'm retired, but is really all you need to hear. I could have did that in a minute. I did it in 11. That's all you got to hear. I don't want to say I'm retired, but it's done. He's done. It's time for us to let it go. Let's let it move on. I won't make a video about Jon Jones for the next couple weeks now because there will be no news. Right now. He's been the news. Until next time, guys like subscribe Tell your friends I got a YouTube channel. Tap in. Hit that reminder button so you don't miss anything like this. Detailed Summary of "Daniel Cormier TV - Daniel Cormier says Jon Jones needs to be STRIPPED OF UFC BELT after saying he doesn't want to fight"
Release Date: June 20, 2025
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, the host delves deep into the ongoing controversy involving Jon Jones, one of the most decorated fighters in UFC history. The discussion centers around Jon Jones's recent statements suggesting he may be stepping away from the sport and the implications this has for his UFC championship status.
The host begins by commending Jon Jones for his exceptional ability to compete across three distinct eras of mixed martial arts (MMA). Highlighting Jones's victories over legendary fighters such as Shogun, Machida, Vitor Belfort, Rashad Evans, and Alexander Gustafson, the host emphasizes Jones's dominance and adaptability in the octagon.
This section underscores Jones's unparalleled career longevity and his role in bringing stability to the UFC belt during times of frequent title changes.
Transitioning to more recent developments, the host discusses Jon Jones's latest remarks from a podcast appearance where Jones hints at stepping back from active competition.
The host interprets these comments as Jones expressing a reluctance to commit to future fights, raising questions about his desire to continue competing at the highest level.
The discussion then shifts to the broader implications of Jones's potential withdrawal from fighting. The host argues that Jones's hesitation, particularly regarding a matchup with Tom Aspinall, is detrimental to his legacy and the UFC's championship landscape.
The host criticizes Jones for delaying a fight with Aspinall, suggesting that this postponement allows younger, hungry fighters to emerge and stake their claim for the title, thereby undermining Jones's position.
Central to the episode is the introduction of Daniel Cormier's perspective on the matter. Cormier asserts that Jon Jones should be stripped of his UFC belt due to his reluctance to defend his title actively.
The host echoes Cormier's sentiments, arguing that Jones's lack of willingness to engage in high-profile fights, especially against top contenders like Aspinall, indicates that he may no longer be the fighter he once was.
Drawing parallels to other sports, the host compares Jon Jones's situation to iconic transitions, such as Magic Johnson taking over from Larry Bird in basketball or Michael Jordan succeeding Magic. The host suggests that for the UFC to maintain its competitive edge, a clear successor to Jones is necessary.
This analogy emphasizes the importance of progression within the sport and the need for emerging talents to step into the spotlight when veterans step back.
Wrapping up the discussion, the host reiterates the inevitability of change within the UFC. He posits that Jon Jones's reluctance to fight may signify the end of an era and the beginning of a new chapter for the heavyweight division.
The host calls for the UFC to consider stripping Jones of his belt to pave the way for new champions, ensuring the sport's continued excitement and growth.
This episode provides a comprehensive analysis of Jon Jones's current standing in the UFC, the potential impact of his decisions on his legacy, and the broader implications for the championship landscape. By incorporating Daniel Cormier's outspoken stance, the host effectively highlights the pressing need for action within the organization to maintain its competitive integrity.
