Daniel Cormier
You smell that? That biscuit, you like that?
Islam Makhachev
Sunday I waiting one morning.
Daniel Cormier
Okay, Sunday morning before you leave, I.
Islam Makhachev
Promise you have to be fresh.
Daniel Cormier
Fresh hot.
Islam Makhachev
Okay?
Daniel Cormier
Warm. You gonna eat this?
Islam Makhachev
Yeah.
Daniel Cormier
Okay. Las Vegas for training camp this time. How was that, man? I mean, I read something the other day when you're talking to Demetrius Johnson. You had a baby and then left the next day for training camp.
Islam Makhachev
Third one.
Daniel Cormier
Third baby.
Islam Makhachev
How many you have?
Daniel Cormier
Three.
Islam Makhachev
Three.
Daniel Cormier
Are you done?
Islam Makhachev
No, I want seven.
Daniel Cormier
You want seven children?
Islam Makhachev
Yeah.
Daniel Cormier
Why? Seven children, four wrestling team, seven weight class Olympics.
Islam Makhachev
Some of the judo, sambo wrestling. Maybe someone do MMA now? I have two boys.
Daniel Cormier
Two boys.
Islam Makhachev
I have to be four big. Family is good, man. Yeah, I built new house.
Daniel Cormier
You did already?
Islam Makhachev
A couple years ago.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, it's beautiful.
Islam Makhachev
Beautiful.
Daniel Cormier
I saw Khabib's house. Beautiful house. Is your house like Kabib's house?
Islam Makhachev
Like a residence, you know? It's so big.
Daniel Cormier
It's so big. Like yours, like this.
Islam Makhachev
Mine not so big. My I. I live with my grandmother, my father, mother. But it's big but not crazy.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, I saw your father when you first won the belt. This guy was very happy, huh?
Islam Makhachev
Yeah.
Daniel Cormier
Very proud of you.
Islam Makhachev
This guy is village guy, you know. He's still doing his farm green farm here just called me today morning and say tomato is ready, tomatoes are ready.
Daniel Cormier
He's excited about tomatoes. You're fighting for the world title this weekend. This dude's talking about tomatoes.
Islam Makhachev
He don't care too much about this all stuff.
Daniel Cormier
What you mean, man?
Islam Makhachev
Well, he's not on sports, you know, he just hard worker all his life. He work with his hand you know.
Daniel Cormier
Your whole family, they watch the fights, though. Mom, dad, kids. Mom can't watch.
Islam Makhachev
Mom never watch the fight.
Daniel Cormier
Why?
Islam Makhachev
Never again. Like after, if I win. He never. Never watched.
Daniel Cormier
Even if you win, she doesn't go back and watch it.
Islam Makhachev
Never.
Daniel Cormier
Why?
Islam Makhachev
I don't know. She don't like.
Daniel Cormier
So my mom used to go. And the whole time she would kind of like. Like this, you know, eyes down. Scared.
Islam Makhachev
My mama go outside the house and she walk around the city, the garden. Yeah. Around where I live. And when I want somebody, like from the other house, go like crazy, you know, and she understand.
Daniel Cormier
Then she understand you when she go back inside. Now, now she can, like, sit and be comfortable.
Islam Makhachev
She noticed too much.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah. So, Las Vegas, though, training camp, how was that? We spoke at. I think we spoke at the last pay per view. You were a little concerned about Khabib losing his mind during training camp. Did he lose his mind? And how was the training camp?
Islam Makhachev
Why you don't come to control, brother?
Daniel Cormier
I. I'm.
Islam Makhachev
I go this crazy month gymnastics something.
Daniel Cormier
Not even gymnastics. No excuses. Just like it's impossible. You go to Las Vegas?
Islam Makhachev
Why? Las Vegas is.
Daniel Cormier
It's very far.
Islam Makhachev
50 minutes by flight. From your house? Yeah, why not?
Daniel Cormier
But if I go to the fly, I never know if maybe they throw me out.
Islam Makhachev
No, they throw.
Daniel Cormier
This is the craziest situation.
Islam Makhachev
You can help people, bro.
Daniel Cormier
Why they kick him out like this? Crazy. Why do you do this to my guy?
Islam Makhachev
I don't know this number one disrespect, brother. I understand if you. If they kick you out from this emerging acts because you're so big.
Daniel Cormier
Maybe don't do that. Don't be disrespectful. Don't be disrespectful. I can help. Because you need strength to pull the bar a little bit big.
Islam Makhachev
Now. You cannot move. Move too much.
Daniel Cormier
No, but all you got to do is pull the lever. That's it.
Islam Makhachev
But people have to go from this side.
Daniel Cormier
Yeah, but once I jump, once I pull, I go.
Islam Makhachev
Ah, you go first.
Daniel Cormier
I go first. You go first or you go last?
Islam Makhachev
I go less, you win.
Daniel Cormier
I help everybody.
Islam Makhachev
Yeah, Khabib go last too.
Daniel Cormier
So what happened is like these people from front there, this airline company. Disrespectful. They took the worst guy. This guy's the best guy to be in there. What it is, man, it's crazy. But how was the camp?
Islam Makhachev
Camp? It's really hard, man.
Daniel Cormier
It was hard.
Islam Makhachev
And I like to train in Vegas. Ucpi. Like all therapy, food, everything. It's Good, you know, training there.
Daniel Cormier
Brand new facilities, recovery training, training like ufc, PI team.
Islam Makhachev
It's so good, you know. Thank you. Everyone from ufcpi, they help us a lot. And we have everything what we need in last camp in Vegas.
Daniel Cormier
When you weigh your camps, your last couple camps in Dagestan to this one, like, is this something you're going to be doing more going forward, coming out to Las Vegas to do your camps?
Islam Makhachev
We're thinking where we can make the camp, you know, and Vegas or San Jose? And because this time, trigger cold. San Jose too, it's cold also. Gym is cold sometimes. And because we come like big team, like three guys fighting. That's why we sit with the Habib is the coach and we choose the Vegas. Nice Vegas. Honestly, one of the.
Daniel Cormier
It's a great place for training, especially right now with the PI. It's a great place.
Islam Makhachev
Yeah. Apex, they have everything.
Daniel Cormier
Islam, you're fighting Armands Rukian again the first time, right? Even we did, right when you came back from fight, we all make fun. Like, oh, you lose a round, you do this, this. He said, brother, I won every round. Like, I won three rounds to zero. Yeah, but he fought you on short notice. Do you anticipate a much different fight this time than you got in the last fight?
Islam Makhachev
Man, maybe first time I'm a little bit underestimating because I don't know these guys. Even not I signed him in New York City.
Daniel Cormier
Even not in he wasn't signed before he fought you.
Islam Makhachev
They looking, looking for opponent for me. That's why he signed there. Because no one from us or other country want to come to Russia and fight with me. That's why that time we signed him and he grew up more experienced now. Like, he's a big guy now, you know, he's big, big experience and one of the best in our division.
Daniel Cormier
In that first fight, it seemed as though he was more willing to wrestle you offensively. Most people shy away from that. They just think defend Islam's takedowns, right? So then they're kind of on their heels the whole time because they're thinking shot, shot, shot. Which ultimately leads to you being better with your hands. Do you anticipate he's going to be trying to wrestle you again in this fight?
Islam Makhachev
Because all his fight he have same style. If you look how many 9, 10 fight he have in UFC right now, it's. He have always same style with everybody. He go with the striking little bit. And when somebody try to push him, it go to take down. That's why. Because why he number one? Why am I the champion? Because he have good skills in the wrestling. Because I have good skills in the wrestling. Who have good skills in the wrestling. They control the division.
Daniel Cormier
You know, it is universally thought, you know what that means? Universal. Like, everybody believes this, that this is the toughest fight to date for Islam. Makhachev, do you agree? The first one, this one, this weekend is the toughest fight that you'll see.
Islam Makhachev
Nobody know, you know, Nobody know. Some of the fighters. For example, when I was fighting with the Tibao Glace and Tibao, in my mind, I prepared like myself for the very hard fight, you know, but it was go easy, you know, And I prepare.
Daniel Cormier
I remember that we fought together that night. You knocked him out.
Islam Makhachev
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Straight lucky.
Daniel Cormier
You knock him out good. You get boldness.
Islam Makhachev
And you, what you did submission. Submission, not submission. You ground the pound.
Daniel Cormier
No submission. This was against Rumble Johnson. Our volcanoes, like, okay, yeah. Ground and pound.
Islam Makhachev
Ground and pound. They don't give me bonus. They give you a bonus?
Daniel Cormier
No. I thought you got the bonus.
Islam Makhachev
No, that night I don't get the bonus.
Daniel Cormier
I wonder why.
Islam Makhachev
Why you get the bonus?
Daniel Cormier
I don't know. You're a rich guy now. You don't need the bonus now.
Islam Makhachev
Now I don't need. But that time I need the bonus. You know, you have to come to my room. I'm not deserved, Ma.
Daniel Cormier
And give you the 50 grand?
Islam Makhachev
Yes, brother, because.
Daniel Cormier
So you're telling me right now, if you get a bonus over Umar, right, you'll take the 50 grand and go give it to Umar, Go give it to Tagir. Tagir.
Islam Makhachev
Tagir.
Daniel Cormier
So you would go give Tagir. He would not do that.
Islam Makhachev
Tagir wants some, like, crazy things.
Daniel Cormier
But you didn't do a crazy thing. You hit one punch.
Islam Makhachev
One punch, knock him out, slip more than this.
Daniel Cormier
If maybe you do like, spinning back fist twice, like this guy in Abu Dhabi, okay, I give him the money. But if you only do one punch, knockout and I do the same thing, we do the same thing.
Islam Makhachev
What you did punch, just punch, finish 100 pounds, you know, go easy.
Daniel Cormier
What did you. What did I hit him with? My fist?
Islam Makhachev
Yes.
Daniel Cormier
What did you hit the guy with your fist?
Islam Makhachev
My arm.
Daniel Cormier
So it's the same thing, right? Like, there's no reason to give you the 50 grand.
Islam Makhachev
It's not. It's not true, man.
Daniel Cormier
You know, you never know what's gonna come. The Dustin Poirier fight, a lot of people made it seem like that was a super tough fight. When you go back and watch it like, what did you make of that fight?
Islam Makhachev
You know, improve a lot from this fight. Like, my striking become better from this side because I know I can strike with anyone. Because Dustin is one of the dangerous guy in our division who have better than him boxing, you know, I go with him like. And I feel comfortable if Khabib and our corners don't told me take him down, take. I can knock him out, you know, because I landed a lot.
T-Mobile Advertiser
You were.
Daniel Cormier
You are landing really good in the striking.
Islam Makhachev
He landed also, but we have good, good fight in the striking. But from this fight, I improve a.
Daniel Cormier
Lot, you know, Islam. So I'll tell you this right now. So I keep count. You told me after the first Volkanovsky fight, you maybe underestimate him a little bit, right? You're telling me now that from the Armand Tsurukian fight, you possibly. No, but did you underestimate Dustin Poirier?
Islam Makhachev
No.
Daniel Cormier
So now, now that you. How do you not underestimate Armand again?
Islam Makhachev
I'm surprised when I fight with Dustin, I'm surprised how he defends my wrestling. You know, I'm not underestimate. Because this is like, how do you.
Daniel Cormier
Make sure you don't do that again against Armand?
Islam Makhachev
No, no, no.
Daniel Cormier
Is that from the first fight? You gained the respect from the first fight because he said that he doesn't even look at the first fight because he's a different guy.
Islam Makhachev
He's a number one contender right now. It means he's a high level fighter. How I can underestimate, maybe when I fought with Volkanovski, I think he's gonna be short, small, something like that. But right now I have a real opponent who have everything, you know, I have to be ready.
Daniel Cormier
You know, one thing that happens when the guy wins as much as you do, you're like. I don't know if you even noticed or if you pay attention to it. You're like two fights from breaking Anderson Silva's record for wins in a row in the UFC. You're at 14 straight wins, which is a crazy how many you have. Dude, stop. God damn, man. I never won 14 fights in a row. I only had like 13 fights in the UFC. You never. You already break my record. Khabib record. You beat Khabib in terms of his wins in the ufc. Nobody does that. Like, it's Anderson, Kamaru Usman and then you. But if you win this weekend, you tie Kamaru Usman, you'll be one from Anderson Silk. You've won the championship, you've defended the championship. Twice. If you win this weekend, you will now have the record for most title fight wins in the ufc. Do you think about that stuff? Because now you're on the verge of getting spoken about in historical terms. We used to always talk about that in the gym, right? Want to be number one. Pound for pound, we want to be this, we want to be that. You're checking all those boxes now. You ever stop and like take note of it a little bit and go, man, this is really special.
Islam Makhachev
Honestly, man, I never thinking about this, like, I don't know how many Usman have, how many Anderson's, but last week a lot of media asked me about this. You know, it's good, good for the legacy. And I become close to you guys, Habib you to become in hall of Fames.
Daniel Cormier
So Islam, that's another thing. So everybody wants to ask me, right? Because I know you guys well, how much does Islam have to do to surpass Habib as the greatest lightweight of all time?
Islam Makhachev
It's not my goal. It's not some things which I want to do. You know, just one thing. What I want to do, honestly, to be champion many, many years. That's it. No records, nothing. Just defend my belt, be champion. You know, when you have belt, it's different.
Daniel Cormier
I told him that. I said that. That was my answer. The respect he has for that guy and what he's done for his career, you don't want to surpass that. It's like, I think Khabib's the greatest lightweight of all time. I think Khabib's the greatest fighter of all time. But I also think, I also think that Arman Tsarukian needs to be somebody or somebody needs to be able to challenge you in a way that can elevate you to that next level of superstar. That's my.
Islam Makhachev
I don't think it's. Arman Sarukan is like big name, you know, he's a good fighter.
Daniel Cormier
You need a big name though.
Islam Makhachev
Yeah, maybe somebody. Maybe you'll come back.
Daniel Cormier
Me, you know that if I came back, I would still beat you, as I always beat you. I'm now, I'm now fat, out of.
Islam Makhachev
Shape, golf guy, lazy, don't want to cut weight.
Daniel Cormier
Me, I can make 205. I can make 205.
Islam Makhachev
You can come back, cut weights and.
Daniel Cormier
Be in the top, top 20. Everybody would beat me. I don't want to be in the top 20, man.
Islam Makhachev
Top five.
Daniel Cormier
No.
Islam Makhachev
100%.
Daniel Cormier
No chance, bro. Islam, you are the man, bro. I appreciate you spending time with Me? Oh, we're doing one of these.
Islam Makhachev
Still strong.
Daniel Cormier
I'm very sure what you did by.
Islam Makhachev
Training a little bit.
Daniel Cormier
Me? Why? Why would you think I trained a little bit?
Islam Makhachev
You have to right now.
Daniel Cormier
Wrestling dudes only wrestling.
Islam Makhachev
Oh, no. When you go to the daughter's school, do some gymnastics.
Daniel Cormier
It's so hard. Have you ever done gymnastics?
Islam Makhachev
No.
Daniel Cormier
Your kid does gymnastics?
Islam Makhachev
Not now.
Daniel Cormier
It's the devil you're gonna do. It's like very, very hard. Gymnastics. Wrestling. I do wrestling with my kids on my team if I feel like taking on.
Islam Makhachev
How's your team? Good.
Daniel Cormier
Very good team.
Islam Makhachev
When you send them back, we go back.
Daniel Cormier
We go back as soon as we get a chance. When you invite, I take now all my little kids.
Islam Makhachev
And you come with them.
Daniel Cormier
I want to. I went there before, you know Pakistan.
Islam Makhachev
But how many years, brother? The last 15 years. No. I will come to come. Dagestan? Never.
Daniel Cormier
I'm going to Dagestan, guys. I promise it. Islam Makhachev defends his championship this weekend for the third time. That would be the record for most titled fight wins in the ufc. At ufc.
Islam Makhachev
How many times?
Daniel Cormier
Four. Nobody's defended that belt.
Islam Makhachev
Four times you say. You say four.
Daniel Cormier
I did this, dude.
Islam Makhachev
You did this. But you say four.
Daniel Cormier
I said four. So you won the belt against Charles. You beat Dustin Poirier. Oh, man. Did you beat Alexander Volkanovski? Two time defense. So it's five. So it's fine. Is it five? Wait, stop. So is it five? Six. No, wait, stop, wait. So you beat. So you beat Volkanovski twice Defense.
Islam Makhachev
Yes.
Daniel Cormier
You beat Charles Oliveira?
Islam Makhachev
Yes. I take that belt.
Daniel Cormier
And he won the belt. So yeah. Five. Four defenses, five titles. Good job, man. Congratulations. I didn't know.
Islam Makhachev
How many belts do you have? I broke all your records.
Daniel Cormier
No, not yet.
Islam Makhachev
What do you have?
Daniel Cormier
Double check. Remember that? Double check. Guys, Islam defends the belt. UFC311. Hit that pay per view buy button. It's not like he needs any more money, but he could use it. Follow Islam on everything he does till next time. Like subscribe and tell your friends over on my YouTube channel, because I'm checking in with guys like the champ Islam. Thank you again, my man.
