The Volume guys. Diego Lopez fights Alexander Volkanovski for the vacant UFC Featherweight Championship this weekend. Thanks for checking in with me, man. I appreciate you stopping by. How has this all been Diego. This has gone really, really fast. Two years ago you make a short notice debut. You fight so competitively against Evloyev, right? Evloev, right?
Diego Lopez
Yes.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
You fight so competitively against Evlaev fast forward and you're fighting for the world title. Like is this faster than you could have even imagined?
Diego Lopez
I think it is. I'm staying UFC so fast. Only two years. I'm stay fight for the title. But I I have it 32 fights, bro. 32 fight. I work too much. I have 30, 30 years in my career for professional fight. I work it to so long time one day. I know, I know. Imagine this is. I'm staying UFC is my ancestry in the. In the division is so fast. I take for I I fight for the title. But I know I 100% the secret in myself is the I read UFC. I put the big things in the division.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Then we get to Noche UFC and you're fighting Brian Ortega this time at your actual weight and you beat him as bad as anyone has ever beaten Brian Ortega. Did you know matchup wise that that was a good fight for you?
Diego Lopez
Yeah, I know. In this fight my mind is go to the octagon, put the great show, prove it for everybody. Stay waiting for fight at the top. You know, this is my goal for this fight. I know Ortega is a great fight. Not too many people beat Ortegas the ways the I put in this fight. Yeah, I know, I know it's the. It's a great fight. No.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Were you disappointed seeing him leave the weight class when you could potentially have fought him for the belt?
Diego Lopez
No, I don't think so. Because this guy in October in the. In the fight week in the UFC Abu Dhabi. This guy said many times that you is the guy k care.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
He told Judas.
Diego Lopez
No, told you in the. The interview.
Podcast Host 2
The media.
Diego Lopez
Yeah, the media for I I listed this me my team stay prepared for.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
But did he look big? Does he look big like a big guy that go up to 135?
Diego Lopez
No, I don't think so. This s is. Is short. It's short. No, it's small, but it's.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
It's wide like big.
Diego Lopez
Yeah, yeah, it's big. But you know, I'm not disappointed for this and my focus is in the title.
Podcast Host 2
The belt.
Diego Lopez
Yeah, I landed UFC my focus in the title this time in 2023. May 2023. The. The. The champ is volcanoes in my focus in the volcanoes. Volknovs lost lost the title my focus there in the topuria. Yeah, I know there's A point because my, my focus for the title, not the one component in space.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
So it is Alexander Volkanovsky, right? And this is a one of the greatest champions of all time, right? He can do it all. This guy's an amazing fighter. But in his last few fights he's one in three. In his last four he got beat by Makhachev. Then he got finished by Makhachev. Then he got finished by Toporia. Is Alexander Volkanovski the same guy? Can he compete with you on Saturday night?
Diego Lopez
Maybe. Maybe now is the right thing. Only the West. Maybe it's the guys that you meant is different now. Maybe. Take it. Take, take, take your time for for west is the ovens for for your life too. Maybe now is different for the fight for Uriah. No, I think he's the guy fighting so fast after, after the but bro, I mean I hope the best version. They have the vogue. I work too much for this fight. I hope for the best. The best version. They walk in the octagon. This is my goal. This is my goal for beat Evoke is the best version.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Experience is a very key component to this fight. Volkanovski has fought 10 straight title fights. Main events, five rounds. You have none. No main events, no five round fights.
Podcast Host 2
How have you prepared yourself for that?
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Knowing that if this fight goes long.
Podcast Host 2
You'Re in there with a guy that.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Has essentially made a career of being in those moments.
Diego Lopez
I know Volkanox is a lot, a lot of experience UFC fight. Too much. Too much fight in the five rounds. But I prepared myself for, for the best. I prepared for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 rounds is necessary for, for this fight. But I, I, I go to finish this fight. I know what I know. I know training for, for, for the fight to make the decision. I trained for the finish the fight. I think nothing training for, for fighting every fighter for five rides, right? Look, my record is 20, 25, 26 win 22 finish. This is my goal. My goal is finish this fight.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
You're right on the verge of it, man. You have any orange Oklahoma State. You went training. He went training. Still water. How'd you like it down there?
Diego Lopez
It's amazing. It's amazing that I'm stay two weeks in Eastwater. It's amazing playing is that the people in Oklahoma is so nice people. It's the train it this guy in the, in the room too. Yeah. I'm so, I'm so happy.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
It's my time in Oklahoma and David's coming tomorrow. The coach is coming to watch the Fight.
Diego Lopez
Yeah. Yes. David is coming tomorrow. Yeah. I have no idea. But my manager is a good friend for David. He sent me yesterday. David is coming Tuesday. It's okay. Yeah. I'm so happy because David is now is a good friend too.

Nice to see you guys.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
We're here with Tatiana Suarez as she challenges for the ufc.
Podcast Host 2
Straw weight.
Tatiana Suarez
Yes.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Chance. See, I got it right. And she's let go.
Podcast Host 2
She just told me.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
I always think she's at 125. I've said that probably 10 times. Yeah, it's so embarrassing that this is my job.
Tatiana Suarez
And then a tweet, I'm like, that was that one. That was that straw way. You're like, oh, my bad.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
No, because you're, like, in shape, and you look. You look good. So we're sitting here now for the first time, but it feels like this should have happened a long time ago, and many people expected you to be in this position a long time ago. I know it was a tough journey to get here. Speak a little bit about that and, like, the relief that you feel right now that you're actually here.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, I mean, it feels amazing, you know? Like, I know a lot of people were worried because of all the injuries and stuff, like, how my camp would go, but I was very, very smart. I made sure that I had great sparring partners and great partners in general, just making sure that, you know, I make it to the. To the fight. Because, you know, for me, it's like, everybody that knows me believes I'm the best in the world, and they see how great I am. So they're just like, you just need to get to the fight, you know? So here I am. I'm super excited. It's fight week, and I'm ready to go do my thing.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
When you wrap your mind around this. Right. Because even your wrestling career was cut a little short.
Diego Lopez
Right.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Like, you were third in the world, which is an amazing accomplishment. Castian is a great wrestler. Young, when you were. Yeah, yeah.
Tatiana Suarez
I mean, I. I mean, I won my first medal at 17 years old.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
17 years old. Yeah. Won your first world medal. So when dealing with. With. With those types of issues over the course of two careers.
Podcast Host 2
Right.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Because it was a wrestling career and then a fighting career.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Are there times where. Where you're kind of, like, worried? Like, you can't let the mind get.
Podcast Host 2
A hold of you?
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Like, God, I don't want to.
Podcast Host 2
I don't want to ruin this.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Like, so I understand. Training is smart, but still getting the work that you need to make sure you're prepared when you get it. How do you deal with those demons? Of all the things that have happened in the past?
Tatiana Suarez
Oh, I'm smart about it, but I still work very hard.
Diego Lopez
Yeah.
Tatiana Suarez
So it's not like deterring me from getting my work in because I do lots of live. I mean, like, you know, I know a lot of people, like, they're like, oh, you know, maybe you could drill more this and that. And I do drill, but I also, I also go live a lot. Like, a lot. And I'm usually the last one to leave when it comes to any type of life. Like, we start at the same time, and I leave way after everybody else. I mean, I do mad rounds. I love to grapple, I love to spar. I love all of it. Like, I'm a workhorse.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Yeah, you are. It's a wrestling. It's the wrestler in you.
Tatiana Suarez
People always ask me, like, how do you get through the challenges? I'm like, man, I've wrestled since I was three years old. That, that, like, it teaches you. It gives you a different mindset than anything. Like, once I start rolling and, like, rolling around and doing all the wrestling drills, like, my mentality completely changes and like, you know, you know what I'm talking about. Those good wrestling warmups that really get you going.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
And just when you can blow out that first one before you actually have to do something hard, it's the best.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, I feel it. Yeah, Every time.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
So you come back after a long time away, you get an impressive victory. When did you hear you were getting the championship opportunity and was it music to your ears? Like, ah, finally, man.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, absolutely. Because, you know, I was trying. I was calling for the fight like, earlier because I was, I was healthy. And so I was thinking maybe I could fight at the sphere that didn't ended up happening, you know, so then they were like, oh, you know, she's busy this and that. And so then I was like, okay. Then, you know, they did the Verna fight and then they're like, oh, scratch that, you know, and then Senna, now we're here. And I mean, man, it was awesome. Awesome. Just because I felt like, you know, I deserve that title shot, you know, So, I mean, I'm number one in the world. I'm undefeated. So she's already beat everybody else at the top of the division, so why not fight me?
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
When you were on the sideline and you're watching the division and Rose is one of the best and Wei Lee's one Of the best, right? And the belt's kind of going around.
Tatiana Suarez
Even Carla got it.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Carla got the belt. And then, remember, Carla got the belt again. That was a crazy. That was the worst fight of all time. Don't do that, Tatiana. I love Carla, but, no, I don't.
Tatiana Suarez
Want to see that painted more, dude.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Can you believe. No, no, seriously, like, seriously. I remember sitting there with Rogan, and we were talking about it, me, him and John, and we're like, well, they.
Podcast Host 2
Got to judge something.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
They have to judge something, right? And it's like, judge who?
Tatiana Suarez
I know if I should go watch.
Podcast Host 2
That fight again, that was a crazy. Don't watch that fight.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Especially if you're trying to get ready for something.
Podcast Host 2
If you're trying to prepare to fight Weili, don't watch that.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Like, and I love Carla. Like, I. I was very sad when she retired, but that was just the worst fight in history. That was worse than Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis, and that was trash. But when you watch the division and you feel like, in yourself, and so many, like, I mean, so many people in the position that I sit in now talk. Tatiana is the best. Tatiana's going to be champ. She's undefeated. She's this, she's this, she's this. Was that hard to be watching that from the sideline, just thinking in your mind that you were the best fighter in that division?
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, I mean, it is hard, but again, like, for me, I'm just like. I, like, people are like, man, look what you did to the champion. You know that you're so. They're so lucky that you're out. And I'm like, yeah, yeah, you know, I understand. And it's like. But I'm not going to let that, like, discourage me or nothing. Like, yeah, I'm just going to do what I have to do and, like, take care of business. Like, I know for me, people are like, well, I don't understand how she got this. Like, she doesn't deserve it. This and that. And I'm like, you know, they think, like, because everybody was working, and I'm like, I was working, too. Like, you think that just because I was injured, I was like, yeah, I mean, I showed up every single day, and my. It was harder for me because I think I have it harder than them because not only am I sidelined, but, like, I don't have a. They didn't. I decided to do, like, rehab in my neck instead of, like, get surgery. So with it, with the rehab, you don't know when you're going to be better. You just have to trust that you're going to get better. And with surgery, they're like, oh, six months, you're going to be ready. You know, like, I didn't have that. I just pressed it. I showed up every single day. I did all the exercises I had to do. I did everything that I needed to do to get back. And then I hurt my knee, so then I had to do it again. And I was like, I couldn't even believe that it was even happening because I'd done so much work. And I was like, man, I thought that, you know, it's like when you work that hard to come back to something and then it's almost there and.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Then you just, oh, wait, no, take it right out.
Tatiana Suarez
Just kidding. We gotta do it again.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Yeah.
Tatiana Suarez
You're like, what?
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
But that strengthens you here, right?
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
It strengthens the mind, right. To go through. Because there's some dark days when shit is going sideways.
Tatiana Suarez
I've had that.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Yeah, yeah. Some dark days when things are going sideways. Ultimately, Weili separates herself from the division. Right. She has proven now that she, at least over the last year and a half, two years, is the best straw weight in the world. When you look at her, what do you see in Zhang Weili that makes her so special?
Tatiana Suarez
I think for her, you know, she has a strong work ethic, just like myself, you know, she. She was really, really like, she works hard, I can tell, you know, and, you know, she has a good gas tank. You know, she's a very well rounded fighter, you know, but for me, I'm a finisher.
Diego Lopez
Yeah.
Tatiana Suarez
So I'm gonna go out there and I'm a finisher.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
So when I talk to my, When I talk to people, I talk to my friend Chael, son and all, they wonder, what about the championship rounds?
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
How does Tatiana handle the championship rounds? Because there was one fight where you seen the tire in the third against Nina.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Amanda's white.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
How do you handle round four and five whenever we really haven't seen you there.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Especially with someone like Weili, who has that championship level experience and those late rounds in her back pocket to rely on when you get there.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah. No, actually in the Nina fight, I didn't feel tired at all. I just, I was just. I had a neck injury, so I felt like I was just, to be honest with you, I was like, the first two rounds, I'm like, okay, I got it, I got it. Then the third one, I'm like, this is really hurting. Like, you know, I'm like. It was really messy with my head, and I was like, maybe I could just do footwork all around their cage.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Yeah, I literally thinking that.
Tatiana Suarez
I was like, just thinking, like, maybe I could just do footwork around and just kind of get by because my neck was, like, really hurting so bad, and I was like, really? Just get. Yeah, I was like, just get through the last round. You already won the first two rounds. Like, it was like a competitor, like, you know, when you're in wrestling and you don't want to get taken down at the edge, it was like that.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
I literally sometimes would look at the clock, you grabbing the clinch, and, like, come on, man. Don't look at the clock too early, though, cuz, like, if you look at it and it's like, still 2 minutes and 45 seconds, you're like, God dang it.
Tatiana Suarez
I'm like, two more minutes of footwork. All right, I got this.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
But it just. Yeah, I'm glad because. I'm glad to hear that, because when we were watching, it seemed like. Because she was finding a little bit of success. It seemed like you were uncomfortable in that. Like, you're, like, panicking a little bit.
Tatiana Suarez
No, I felt fine. No, I just, you know, I just kind of, like, was. I should have just stayed engaged. I should have just stayed engaged and like that. But that's something that, like, I'll. I'll learn. I learned from. You know what I mean? Even, like, it's like, I thought to myself, oh, you know, I'm. I'm fine. I could just do footwork around here, but I just should have stayed engaged and aggressive like I usually am, because that's when I fight my best, you know?
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Your documentary was nice, too. It was on hbo. You know that? Yeah, it was on Max. I saw that. Yeah, it was. Congratulations, dog.
Podcast Host 2
That's a big deal.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Appreciate it.
Podcast Host 2
That's a big deal.
Tatiana Suarez
For me, though. I did want to add to, like, you know, I do a lot of sparring rounds and stuff, and, like, I actually get better as the time goes on.
Diego Lopez
Okay.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah. So, yeah, I think that's something that's, like, a good thing for me. I don't know if it's like, I get. I shake the cobwebs out, and then, like, the third, fourth, fifth round, I'm like, better. It's. It's strange. I don't know. So, like, in fact, like, my coach was doing punch count. He's like, yeah, their last round was the most punches you've had, and I'm like, damn. Okay, that's good. That's good to hear.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Because, you know, when you're in the feed fighter and you're dominant, people try to poke holes.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, yeah, absolutely. I mean, they even did it to Weili her lap, you know, because Jan had some success. Like, she dropped her a couple times, like, in the fight, you know, so I think, like, people were like, oh, man. You know, like, they even did it to her. So.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
But it's not even. Like, sometimes it's not competitive, but because you're not used to seeing that person get challenged, it feels like it's even bigger.
Tatiana Suarez
Absolutely.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
You know, are you ready for what happens if you win this belt on Saturday? Your life changes completely. The spotlight grows. Everything is just bigger and better. Like, do you ever take a moment to sit back and think about, like, the responsibilities that's going to come with it, being a UFC champion, but the good and the bad? Because, like, a lot of champions do, they. They open them, the world opens up when you got the belt, and it's not always the best.
Tatiana Suarez
Yeah, no, I mean, I think that, you know, I'm prepared for anything. Maybe that's why my time wasn't four years ago. You know, maybe my time now, because I wasn't ready then, and now I am ready. This is my time, and I look forward to proving that I'm the best in the world and that, you know, it's going to be an amazing story, and I just can't wait to share it with the world.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
Yeah, it's going to be a tremendous fight. I cannot wait to watch.
Podcast Host 2
Guys.
Podcast Host 1 (possibly DC or Mike)
