Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. Live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. We have had a very, very strong week of shows. If I may say it yesterday, I don't know if we could top that with Nick Wright and Urban Meyer. Man, we were delivering the goods. Great to be here today. You know, I was thinking, sometimes J. Mac, I'm driving to. I don't listen to anything. I just, I stay in my own thoughts.
Unknown
That's a dangerous place.
Colin Cowherd
Dangerous place. And I, and I. Because when I get up in the morning, I usually sit for about 45 minutes to an hour and I kind of peruse some websites. I want to see the headlines. And so when I drive to work, I'm thinking about, you know, trying to kind of assemble stories. And I thought about this when I saw a story, will Aaron Rodgers end up with the Steelers? And if not, it'll be Russell Wilson. And I thought, I mean, Aaron Rodgers has been reduced to that. Think about this, you know what Aaron Rodgers has become, what I compared him to the last four years, he's become Kevin Durant. Think about it. Both left incredibly stable organizations. Green Bay and Golden State, all they do is win. They got into their feelings, little bit of ego. They want to play with their buddies. So they go to unstable places. The jets in Brooklyn, and it's a mess. Very quickly they stoke flames with the media. Can't trust the media. Hot take people. Clickbait. Can't I do my own homework? Both if I. I've mentioned this for years. They're both single guys, rich single guys that get older. Nobody at home to hold them accountable, you know. You know, it is kind of doing their own thing, whatever they feel like. Surround themselves with people who agree with them. And now both the great Kevin Durant and he's great. And the formerly great Aaron Rodgers, he was great. Have been reduced to crossing their fingers, hoping they can latch on to a team that can make the playoffs. Both can be funny, both can be charming, both are all time talents. I think they're both kind of interesting guys. I think in terms of professional athletes, they have a lot to say and they're interesting. But we have to be fair about Katie and Aaron, both of those kind of people. And you probably know somebody like this in your life. They're always searching for something. You could have a sister or brother like that. They're always sort of searching for something. Just being successful and winning, it's not enough. Both also, sometimes to a fault, push back on authority. Golden State was good for kd. Green Bay was Really good for Aaron Rodgers. And both of, in my opinion, hurt their own careers based on poor decisions, the inability to realize how damn good they had it at Golden State and Green Bay. In life, if you can't tell how green your grass is, then everybody else's grass looks really green. And now, because, you know, Katie's been banged up a few times, he's getting older. He's not going to be anybody's leader. They've tried that in Phoenix. It doesn't work. Okay, they tried that in Brooklyn. It didn't work. He's got to be an accessory. He's got to be a piece. And Aaron Rodgers is probably 13th best quarterback in the league. Maybe 12th, maybe, maybe 15. Some would say lower. But you can't build around Aaron Rodgers anymore. And the moral to the story or the lesson in life is at least as a pro athlete, winning a lot. If you're being compensated fairly, it's enough. You got to know how green your grass is. Golden State. I mean, you could, you could show up, have a bad night, and the team wins by 20. That's. That's a good life. I mean, that's like for you and I, having a bad day at work and you come home and your kids are so great and your wife's so great, you have a great day and yet you had a bad day at work. That's a pretty good life. And I think that's. Reading that this morning, that it's down to Aaron Rodgers. This is. Could be the New York Giants, it could be the Pittsburgh Steelers. And I'm like, man, talking MVP a few years ago with kd, we're talking a few years ago, is he better than LeBron? And this is what it's been reduced to. Okay? You know, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. That's up in the corner of the country for the uninitiated. And so this story just cracks me up. And you also know I like Sam Darnold, and I don't want to criticize any media people by name, but the Seahawks signing Sam Darnold and, and letting go of Geno Smith, some of the takes by you media people have been awful. Geno Smith last year had 21 TDs and 15 picks. He's 34. Darnold's more mobile. Darnold signed an incredibly Seahawk friendly deal. Darnold was better than Geno last year. What's all the hysteria like? I understand the media falls for stories, but the story has gone from what a great comeback story to hey, Chino, Smith is irreplaceable. What? 21 touchdowns, 15 picks. And he had two good running backs and he had three good receivers and he had a capable tight end. Speaking of comeback stories, media, how about we come back to reality? Darnold, seven years younger, had a much better year, much better athlete, mobility wise. And that deal Darnold signed with the Seahawks, Sam gave away money. He knows the value of being in a good situation. Darnold, that's an incredibly Seahawk friendly deal. It's like the Buccaneers, Baker Dealers. It's incredibly team friendly. And in both cases, John Snyder, Seattle, Jason Light in Tampa you have an elite GMs. This is very much Tampa. You kind of got a quarterback who's B2B plus and you got him for like a C minus contract. So I mean think about this all the how did you let Geno Smith go? Russell Wilson right now can't really find a job. And in the last two years he's had more touchdown passes and a higher passer rating than Geno Smith. You people are. You're all freaking out. Like the media just latches on to stories and they can't let go. I'm going to make a guarantee. This is Collins personal guarantee or your money back. Darnold will do better than 21 touchdowns and 15 picks next year. I don't know how much better, but he's younger, he's a better athlete. He'll make things happen off script. I mean Seattle last year. Third downs are really important down right. We would all admit that. You, me, everybody, J. Mac, you'd admit this third down's important. Seattle had lock it, the Ohio State kid. We all like DK Metcalf, legit left tackle, two decent backs. The Seahawks were 21st on third down and oh, by the way, the sixth most drives ending in a punt with way better than average weapons In a division where the Niners were falling apart, Arizona's Arizona and the Rams are a year away. Now the Rams are the best team in the division. Rams are better. San Francisco rebuilding. I mean, good God, if you go to Geno and Sam Darnold's comps last year across the board, Darnold significantly better. So I understand the need by writers and bloggers and media people to latch onto the story. But the Geno Smith leaves Seattle has gone from cool comeback story. Let's come Back to reality. 21 touchdowns, 15 picks, 34 years old, not as mobile as Darnold. There's an argument. And I like Geno to the Raiders because he's an adult. He's a grown up. He's accurate. He'll move the chains. There's an argument. Seattle squeezed just about everything Geno's got. He's probably got one or two decent years. Quarterbacks hit 35 and 36. It just looks different. Except for Tom Brady. It kind of looks different. I'm not anti Gino, but JSN, DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett, two capable running backs. Noah Fant six in the league in drives, inning and punt. 21st in the league on third down. Like come on now. I mean, Bo Nix considerably better. And and was throwing to Cortland Sutton and then just crossing his fingers as a rookie. Take a deep breath, Darnold. Gino, I've said you can argue they're Both somewhere between 13th and 16th best quarterback in the league. If I get the guy that's seven years younger, more athletic, with a better friendly team deal. Remember, Gino wanted 45. Sam's got like 33. I can get two more players. Like they're not different enough. Sam Darnold's not going to give you the Vikings year. He's also not going to give you a Jets year. Seattle's got a good GM and Sam's going to play with four more new starters that John Snyder drafts. Think about that as well. Do not, do not undersell Baker signing a team friendly deal. That's why Tampa's got so many good players. Brady didn't break the bank. Baker didn't break the bank. Gino, for his Skill set at 34, wanted a lot more money than Sam got. All right, J. Mac, we have. Oh, I've got an interesting Micah Parsons shot at Brock Purdy.
Unknown
You're not going to hit him with more. You people. I heard a couple of those in the opening rant that's a little combative to start the show.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, Bo Nixon, Cortland Sutton, 13th on third down in a division with the Chargers defense and the Chiefs defense. Okay. As a rookie, 13th on third down in a division with two of the top four defenses in the league.
Unknown
Not bad. Can I already take you up on your your money back guarantee that you just made? So you said, I guarantee you he'll.
Colin Cowherd
Go better than 21 touchdowns in 15.
Unknown
Okay, so I just looked at Sam Darnold's career. Other than last year's outlier with the great Kevin O'Connell. Sam Darnold has never thrown 21 touchdowns in the NFL and now his top receiver is JSN. They got rid of two other guys, I don't think he's going to hit 21 touchdowns. You think they're going to all of a sudden air it out?
Colin Cowherd
No, he's going to go 24, 8, which is way better than 21 and 15. He'll go 24 and 8. By the way, they have a number one receiver, Fant two running backs. We know you can find receivers in college. You can find receivers, by the way, because Sam Darnold's deal is friendly. You can find receivers at the trade deadline. What if a team is a mess in week seven? Then go find. You know, the Darnold deal is so team friendly, it allows you moves potentially at the trade deadline.
Unknown
You also said they're between the 13th and 16th best quarterback in that whole ballpark. I hate to break it to you.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
But I recently went through on my podcast.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
And they're. Neither of them are top 15. I mean, there's 15 better quarterbacks in the league right now. Like Tua. Would you say Tua is better than both those guys?
Colin Cowherd
I would say Tua has been more consistent with both those guys. But small, not good. Deep concussion issues. And if it's windy, he's not the same player. I'd take Darnold. I'm just saying. Okay. And I also look at Tua. How much you have to pay Tua and how much you have to pay Sam.
Unknown
That factors in.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, there's only a couple quarterbacks in the league where you're like, what's the weather like? And if the answer isn't what you want to hear, you don't get the same player.
Unknown
So Dak or Geno Smith or, or. Or Sam Darnold. Like, it's got to be Dak. I. I don't love him. Especially not at 60 mil after a.
Colin Cowherd
Second lower body injury. We sure it's Dak? Wow.
Unknown
Oh, Sam, you're rising the ranks suddenly.
Colin Cowherd
I know I'm being realistic.
Unknown
Whoa.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, Jordan Love had a totally up and down season. Went 25 TDs, 11 picks. Sam can't go 24 and 10. And. And Jordan love last year disappointed most 24 and 10. I'm not saying 36 and 6. I'm not asking for a Josh Allen. I'm not saying 29 and 4. Aaron in his prime. I'm just saying 24 and 10. 24 and 11. Sam can't do that. No. By the way, all you Aaron Rodgers fanboys, apparently Peter Schrager on Good Morning Football Today reported that Aaron Rodgers could take up to Four weeks to make a decision. Stuff is funny. Can you imagine trying to hire somebody you know, the most important position on your team in a team sport? Hey, give me a month. What have you been doing? You were out of the playoff race, like, three years ago. I mean, what are we doing here? Can you. Can you. Can you get. Can you give me an answer? I'm not. I'm not looking for you to play tomorrow. Could you just give me an answer? Hey, again. It's amazing. Rich single guys, the older they get, the weirder they get. This is funny. Micah Parsons took a shot at the 49ers and Brock Purdy. As Micah is watching the Niners having to get rid of all these players because now they have to pay Brock Purdy. And the little tweet by Micah is no more rookie quarterback. Lol. Welcome to reality. Yes. Yes, yes. Brock Purdy now lives the same life as every other quarterback in the league. It's a flawed roster. It's an average offensive line. You have a highly compensated receiver coming off surgery, and there's no more money to upgrade. You have to cross your fingers on draft picks. So this is the real NFL. This has been my narrative for years. It's almost like the first time you move out from your parents and you're on your own. Oh, wait. My phone bill's $278 a month. I've only got one lamp. Oh, I had no idea cutlery cost this much. Mom said I have to pay for my own car insurance. Yeah, that's called grown up adult. That's a reality when you get off, you know, the parents dole. So Brock Purdy's been in this league, you know, three full years. A little bit of a trust fund kid. Not a lot of discomfort. Didn't have to carry anybody. Not a lot to overcome. Well, then the second half of last year happened. Left tackles out, McCaffrey's out, receiver banged up. That. That, by the way, that's not a hardship. That's called the NFL for a quarterback. That's what Mahomes has been dealing with for three years. That's not a hardship. You having to pay your own car insurance is not a hardship. It's called being an adult. So Micah Parsons is just saying, okay, remember, remember Dak? When Dak came into the league, you guys all fell for it. Number one O line by a mile. I mean, like Philadelphia's own line now, just dominant. Zeke was all pro. They got him. Amari Cooper. Short time after that CD Lamb we eatin'and all. Of a sudden, now you get paid and you get an injury like Brock Purdy's gonna get paid and he's had a couple injuries. You don't move quite as well, and then all of a sudden you're measured on different stuff. So the other thing to remember so Brock Purdy entered the league with the best roster just in his division, looking down at everybody. Now the Rams have a better roster. Rams have a better quarterback. Rams have a better coach. Purdy was.02 against the Rams last year. So remember how Sean McVay got tired of losing to Kyle Shanahan and moved off golf? Let me tell you something. If Brock Purdy gets a new deal, the next two years can't beat McVeigh. That's going to piss Shanahan off. Whole world changes now. When you get paid, expectations go up. McVeigh loved golf, and then he couldn't beat his rival. He was winning a lot of games. He got you to a Super bowl he couldn't beat. The Niners ticked him up. Never forget McVeigh and Shanahan maybe buddies. They are intense rivals. And now McVeigh's got the better roster, the better quarterback. He won both games last year. There's a type of soil in Mississippi called Yazoo Clay. It's thick, burnt orange, and it's got a reputation.
Colin Cowherd
It's terrible, terrible dirt.
Larison Campbell
Yazoo clay eats everything, so things that get buried there tend to stay buried until they're not. In 2012, construction crews at Mississippi's biggest hospital made a shocking discovery.
Colin Cowherd
7,000 bodies are out there or more.
Larison Campbell
All former patients of the old state asylum. And nobody knew they were there.
Colin Cowherd
It was my family's mystery.
Larison Campbell
But in this corner of the south, it's not just the soil that keeps secrets.
Colin Cowherd
Nobody talks about it. Nobody has any information.
Larison Campbell
When you peel back the layers of Mississippi's Yazoo Clay, nothing's ever as simple as you think.
Unknown
The story is much more complicated and nuanced than that.

I'm Larison Campbell. Listen to under yazukle on the iHeartRadio app, Apple podcast, or wherever you get your podcast.

Micah Parsons coming around on the old a Brock Purdy narrative. Things are changing. It's like J. Mac. First couple of weeks, made mistakes, nobody cared. Now the Brinks truck stopped by. Little tougher grading scale than the old herd update guy. Here's J. Mac with the news. No, no, no, no. Heard on the news. This is the.
Unknown
Did you have a cigar last night or two?
Colin Cowherd
No. I'll tell you what happened.
Unknown
Oh, no.
Colin Cowherd
So I, My daughter might as well be a pharmacist. So literally I say, hey, dad needs. I want to get a good night's sleep because I got some takes tomorrow. And she goes, oh, magnesium is great. And I'm like, okay, whatever. So she, you know, opens up the cabinet and it's, you know, seriously, I feel like I'm at CVS and she gives me a magnesium. I fell asleep with my clothes on, woke up with a cat on my shoulder. I'm like, I don't even know what happened. I mean, seriously, you've ever tried magnesium.
Unknown
To go to sleep?
Colin Cowherd
Well, yeah.
Unknown
Wow. Okay. It's effective.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, this is a drug free environment over here. But I went heavy magnesium last night. I, I honestly, I could, I could go UFC Octagon for about six rounds right now. Wow. Okay, maybe shadow. Shadow boxing, but I could go in there shadow boxing.
Unknown
All right, so let's get started. Listen, there's a lot of fun stuff today. We're starting with the Cleveland Cavaliers. We don't talk about them a ton, but they've won 15 games in a row for the second time this season. Colin. What? Why aren't we talking? Why aren't you leading the show with Donovan Mitchell's dominant Cavs? They are, during this 15 game winning streak. Unbelievable numbers. Fourth in rating, first in net rating, defensive rating. Two. Colin. Cleveland, Cavs.
Colin Cowherd
Mitchell, I've been saying this all year. Second best team. The first. The two best teams in the league, and there's not really a third to me. OKC is not ready for this smoke. Boston 1, Cleveland 2. Gap to Oklahoma City. Cleveland. Oklahoma City is where the Lakers.
Unknown
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
LeBron's out for two weeks. Luke is eating a Snickers bar. Can't defend a chair. No, Cleveland's good. Everybody fell in love with Cleveland two years ago. Cleveland is what? Oklahoma City. Oklahoma City this year is Cleveland a year ago that. Everybody's like, they're ready and they just need it. Even Evan Mobley needed to get a little better. They needed more seasoning. They needed to play together for another 50 games. Cleveland's the real deal. Real deal.
Unknown
Fifteen wins in a row. I mean, would you be shocked if they got to the NBA Finals?
Colin Cowherd
No.
Unknown
You think they're gonna.
Colin Cowherd
No, I. There's. Bill Simmons thinks they're gonna beat the Celtics. I think I was the other day. No, he thinks it's 50. 50. Yeah. Well, he's. You can be a Celtic guy and also say Cleveland matches up with. See, this is Boston. I think Boston beats Cleveland, but Cleveland's the only team that Boston has to be completely healthy to beat. You can't be missing Holiday with his finger or Porzingis.
Unknown
Porzingis illness is a little.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, no, you got to have a full staff to beat Cleveland. And Cleveland. Cleveland and Boston can score down low, can defend the rim, defend the perimeter. Now, Garland's not much of a defender at the point, but they're really good.
Unknown
Not to quote the great Ric Flair, but I have to. To be the man. You got to beat the man.
Colin Cowherd
That's right.
Unknown
And I'm. I'm not buying the Cavs until they beat Boston in a playoff series. This is a really good regular season team, but they've got to take down Boston in the playoffs.
Colin Cowherd
Yes. Do you see that happening?
Unknown
Both fully healthy, Boston and six.
Colin Cowherd
It's all I know. It will be one of the better playoff series in a long time.
Unknown
Who are the best three players on the floor in that series? Boston. Cats. Best three in order.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I think there's three really good players. Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Donovan Mitchell. And then I think Evan Mobley.
Unknown
Evan Mobley's good.
Colin Cowherd
He's really good. Really good.
Unknown
Almost talking yourselves into the Cats. Be careful, Kellen. Always looking out for you. All right, next story. This was a surprise. Last night the Bills nabbed Joey Bosa.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
On a one year, 12.6 million dollar deal.
Colin Cowherd
I like it.
Unknown
Bose is only 29.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
Now, he's had an injury history in recent years, but the Bills recently moved on from Von Miller, so Bosa fills.
Colin Cowherd
That void at his best. He's better than Von Miller and he's cheap.
Unknown
Oh, heck, yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. So no, it's a good stay healthy is the question. You know, here's the thing. It's the Vaughn Miller deal I didn't like because I thought he was past his prime and it was a huge deal. This is a one year deal for 12 and a half million bucks. It's a very smart deal. I'm actually surprised there wasn't more of a market because you and I were on the go get Miles Garrett train. Well, Joey's not Myles Garrett, but when he's healthy, he's a good player.
Unknown
Oh, very good. Is this the kind of move that puts them over the top or we don't?
Colin Cowherd
No, I think they still. I think. Listen. Puts them over the top. They, they're at the top. They just can't beat one team. Everybody else in the league. Philadelphia, Kansas City ahead. Buffalo's third. They're fine. I say one of the stories of the off season that nobody's talking about is Kansas City's offensive line. It wasn't good last year.
Unknown
It's terrible.
Colin Cowherd
It's. Well, you, you can't lose Joe Tuney and convince me of a better O line. Joe, Tony is one of the five most flexible, capable offensive lineman in the sport.
Unknown
I know people aren't going to want to hear this, but I'm pro. Hey, we need a. A pitch count, if you will, for Bosa during the regular season. Because I want him healthy in January.
Colin Cowherd
That's right.
Unknown
Like I don't care if he's not producing in the regular season. I need him in the playoffs because.
Colin Cowherd
That'S all this is, a release. That's smart. GMing one year, 12 and a half million. Good player. Let's say you get 12 games out of him. Okay. All right. Is he playing against Kansas City in the playoffs? I'm good.
Unknown
That's all that matters. Final story. Colin, is your Chicago Bears.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
Having a monster off season, building in the trenches and now there's some speculation that Ashton Genti, the Barry Sanders clone from Boise State, is going to be the pick for the Bears in the first round. In fact, Genti is now the Bears betting favorite to land in Chicago. I have a theory about this, but I'll let you go first. Johnson is the new coach. We know when he was in Detroit, they added Gibbs with the 12th overall pick to join Montgomery. Little thunder and lightning action. It worked. Do you buy Genty to the Bears?
Colin Cowherd
Well, I think. I'll tell you what a general manager told me last week. When it comes to the first round, especially in a draft that's not great, just take the best player. So I don't think they're saying Genty. I think what the Bears are saying at this point is who's the best player available. I don't think you can get picky. I mean, I. There are 12 guys in this draft. That's what GMs are telling me. 12, maybe 13 players in this draft that are first round players. The average is about 17. Most years we're at 12. So I think you just take the best player available. Now I do think there's going to be a player drafted after the 15th. That linebacker at Alabama. I think he's going to end up being a really good player. But I, by and large, I think you just take what's there.
Unknown
So my theory is the Bears are floating this because they know Genti is a hot commodity for Dallas, for Denver, several teams.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, and they want somebody to move up, trade back.
Unknown
But they say, hey everybody, we're taking Genti. If you want him, you got to.
Colin Cowherd
Move up to our.
Unknown
Oh, and I think the Bears would love to get a couple more picks. You've said this many times. It's a monster running.
Colin Cowherd
Well, listen, there's an. I think Genti's the best back, but I think the kid at Carolina, he's amazing. He's a.
Unknown
He's also 90 of Genti, maybe more, maybe 95.
Colin Cowherd
So I can get him and another third round pick.
Unknown
Yeah, yeah, I'll do that. DeAndre Swift in the backfield already. Roshan Johnson like they have. Okay, bats. I don't think they need Genti there.
Colin Cowherd
Colin, I'm, I agree with you. That's a good, that's a good take. Bears want it floated. Bears won another pick.
Unknown
I'm trying to match your level of fiery takes here on a, on a hump day.
Colin Cowherd
Y. Is it Wednesday or Thursday?
Unknown
Wednesday. Had to pick.
Colin Cowherd
That magnesium threw me. I, I woke up, I thought I was in Hawaii.
Unknown
I'm starting to have a donut every other morning. Is that. Is that not good?
Colin Cowherd
Dude, I can't lecture anybody. I've had already two bags of Sour Patch Kids this morning. This upstairs studio thing is killing me. Like, the studio, it's killing me.
Unknown
You gotta get that summer body ready, huh? Actually, where you're going, summer doesn't even exist.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, whatever. It's a great city. Great American city. The Midwest. You try it sometime. A lot of nice people there.
Unknown
You tell me it's a great place to fly over.
Colin Cowherd
Midwest is where the real soul of the country is. J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the herd lie news. Oh, I saw this. I saw this story. Saw this story. There's a lot of people out there selling this story. NBA is dead. Seven years. Was 11 years. $76 billion contract. Yeah, I don't think it's dead. I don't think it's going to the emergency room. Owners happy, Players happy. Adam Silver happy. If you sell your house for twice what it's worth, you're happy. Forget what happens. Do it after. So. Oh, the Laker Celtics game, it wasn't even a good game in the second half. Scored a seven year ratings high as the NBA playoffs approach. Every sport except the NFL needs certain brands, certain cities to win. Last year, Dodgers, Yankees had a 67% increase. 67% World Series ratings increase. By the way, when the Cubs played in game seven, both those series on Fox, it was the highest. It had 40 million viewers for a baseball game in America. 40 million. So Cubs, Yankees, Dodgers. Baseball all of a sudden is cool again. In college football, highest natty rating in my adult life. USC, Texas, a 22 and a half. So the NBA today, L.A. lA, Lakers, New York Knicks, Boston Celtics, San Francisco. Love their teams, and their teams are all good. Jeannie Buss said this the other day. She was on a podcast. She said, I had no idea the global impact of Luca. So you. You put Luca. You put Luca in, you know, Los Angeles from Dallas, you put Jimmy Butler, Miami to the warriors. And. And it's like, whoa. It changes everything. So the Cowboys haven't been to a Super bowl in what, like 30 years? Doesn't matter. Irrelevant. So that's why I've been saying going forward, I. I can't understand ESPN not signing baseball. The Dodgers are great. The Mets are fascinating. Yankees good. Braves always good. Cubs just got the best offseason acquisition of the year. Braves, Dodgers, Mets, Phillies, all the big markets, all the big brands are great. Like what is ESPN doing like double down on Bay now? And I'm not a huge baseball guy. Right. Like this is the best time to buy baseball. And the game now is watchable because it lasts 2 hours and 36 minutes, not 3 hours and 11 minutes. So here was on the Julian Edelman podcast. Here was Jeanie Buss talking about the Luca move. Here's Genie Boss.
Unknown
We were not looking to trade Anthony Davis. Dallas contacted us. It was a deal that both sides wanted to make.
Colin Cowherd
I didn't anticipate the global impact it would have.
Unknown
I mean I knew it was going.
Colin Cowherd
To be a big story in the NBA. But he really is a global superstar. Yeah. So it's, I said this the NBA. You got to have your players in the right spots. This is baseball. Bryce Harper in baseball sports crazy Philadelphia judge New York stacked rosters with the Dodgers and the Mets, Braves, Acuna Cubs make a move. Southern California Padres are stacked like in baseball, NBA. You got to have the right brands. I mean I know you all love Boise State, but the bottom line is it's really good when Michigan and Ohio State and Notre Dame end up keep. You know, I mean that Michigan, Big Ten's explosion the last couple years is going to pay dividends for years. You want the Big ten in the SEC and those big brands and Notre Dame to be good. So just over time there are everybody except the NFL. You need stars in the right places. NBA is going to be fine. You don't have to love the NBA but I mean this weekend's a great example. I'm watching Michigan, Michigan State play tough, watch bad offensive teams. I turn on OKC in Denver and it's like superstars and it's like, it's a, it's a, it's a great watch. College basketball is fun, but it's a three week sport. NBA is going to be fine. You got an MVPs battling on another channel. Michigan, Michigan State who are struggling to hit a jumper on the other channel. Don't talk yourself into less athletic, less dynamic athletes. We love March Madness for three weeks. NBA is going to be fine. Didn't have to be your favorite sport. Just say this out loud. Here's the cities that really love this Sport. New York, L.A. chicago, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Dallas did. Chicago's led the NBA in attendance for four straight years. They have a bad product. If New York, LA Chicago, Boston, Philly, San Francisco are really into something. I mean I love college football. Nobody in Philadelphia, San Francisco, New York, Boston, nobody cares. They don't care about it. I do. Rocket Mortgage helps you use your rent payments to get closer to home ownership with something called Rent Rewards.

And by the way, J. Mac asked a very interesting question related to Aaron Rodgers during the break. But just ask the question for the audience. I want the audience to think about this.
Unknown
So how long do you think you could last in a darkness retreat?
Colin Cowherd
45 minutes maybe an hour and a half. I got a wife, I got a kids. I have responsibilities. I have people that rely on me. I'm not rich, single, and think the grass is greener in Mars. Like, I mean, the bottom line is all these Hollywood people that do ayahuasca. Yeah. If you work in a film set three and a half months a year, you do stand up comedy, you're in the creative field, but, like, you're not married, or, like, you can just disappear for four months or you can disappear for like six, seven days. Go for it. Also, I've never needed to find myself. I found myself at like 8. I wanted to be a sportscaster. I wanted to be married by, you know, like, by the time I'm like mid-20s, I'm like, I think I only want to have kids and get married. I'm not one of these people searching constantly to find my truth. Like, I kind of knew what I want. I remember my mom saying when I was eight, she. She was mad at me one day, sure, you have all the answers. You're eight going on 45. And I said 100.
Unknown
You have no idea how similar we are, Colin. Honestly, that's the kind of attitude I had. I was a little rebellious. I'm assuming you.
Colin Cowherd
Same here. Same here, yeah.
Unknown
And you knew you wanted to be a journalist.
Colin Cowherd
I knew. So I listen, I feel bad for some people that, like, don't know what they want to be. Like, I get it. I got lucky on that. But it's like, I don't. I don't. I'm not. I don't need ayahuasca to unlock anything. Unlock what I spew 3 hours a day on radio. What am I gonna get? Am I gonna have better takes? Like, what am I trying to find? Like, I. You get what you get with me. I'm not trying to get better at. I'm just, come in, work hard, be accountable, be a good partner for everybody here.
Unknown
That's a question I get about you a lot. What's it like with Colin? I'm like, you see what he's on the show. I swear to you, that's who he is. If you see him at a movie theater, a Starbucks, wherever, that's who he is. And they're like, I see him at the gym often. I was like, just go. Say what's up. He's normal. He's not.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, I'm not saying. I'm not saying Aaron Rodgers and Seth Rogen doing ayahuasca. If you're in the creative field, and you're. You're like, you're a creative. You're a producer. I think there's some value in spending a weekend doing ayahuasca, throwing up, doing mushrooms in Costa Rica. I think it's experimental, and I think literature and art is experimental. If you're running an accounting firm, just show up to work.
Unknown
Yeah. How about ketamine? Have you considered that?
Colin Cowherd
I don't even know what that is. Yeah, I know. I take.
Unknown
Heard good things.
Colin Cowherd
I take creatine gummies after a workout, and I took. I took. What's that thing that starts with an M? Magnesium. Last night. But I. Aaron Rodgers plays in a structured sport, and he basically, according to Peter Schrager, told the Steelers, give me about four weeks and I'll have an answer. You're not a producer in Hollywood, where everything takes forever. I'm on a. I'm doing a project right now. Everything in Hollywood is slow motion. It's brutal. It takes forever to do anything in the NFL. We have games that are scheduled, OTAs that are scheduled. So you can't just. Hey, I'm Seth Rogen. Seth Rogen's living in a creative world. Adam Sandler, all these artists, they're brilliant people. Christopher Nolan, they need to find themselves. And what were you saying, Joe? Well, no, no, I'm talking Seth Rogen, the comedian.
Unknown
He's awesome. Seth Rogen, he's great.
Colin Cowherd
He's hysterical. He needs these creative, you know, these. These flashes of brilliance and go to the dark side and go hide in an Oregon retreat. Yeah. If I told my wife, hey, this weekend I'm doing ayahuasca, I'll be puking all weekend and on the toilet. And then next weekend, I'm gonna go for a cave for a week, say, I've got an attorney I want you to talk to. And I'm comfortable with that. Okay. So I think a very interesting spot in this draft. Tennessee first pick, Cleveland second, Giants third, New England fourth. It's a very interesting spot. So if you watch free agency, Mike Vrabel for the Patriots has gotten a lot of tough guys. Milton Williams, Harold Landry, Robert Spillane, Morgan. Culture guys, tough guys. They haven't. They haven't pursued a lot of guys that are going to help their quarterback, Drake May. So that's why I think Travis Hunter to New England makes sense. Okay. And they already have two good. They have. They went and got a number two cornerback, Carlton Davis. They've already got a number one cornerback, Christian Gonzalez. They don't need a corner, although they could Use him in return game and some that. But what they need is dynamic fun flash and they're not getting that in free agency. So that leads me to believe that New England's going to go out and get the most dynamic player in the draft because it's the opposite really of what they're accumulating in free agency. And here's Urban Meyer on Travis Hunter. I would never say this other than that guy. I'd play him both ways. I would trade him. I mean he, I've never seen Colin on 160th play of the game, he's blocking guys 25, 30 yards downfield and he, at the end of the game, he's a strong. I know it's college and I get that. I'm gonna, I'm sure some people say odds college it's called. I get that. But I, in my lifetime, I'm not seeing a guy do that. All right, here, here's another one I'll throw at you. I don't think this is a take. I think this is common sense. So I said earlier today I made a guarantee, a hundred percent money back guarantee on this show that Geno Smith last year had 21 touchdowns and 15 picks for Seattle. And I'm like all this hysteria that Seattle moved off him. He's 34 years old, Darnold's 27 and more athletic. And I said to J. Mac, Sam Darnold, I'll guarantee you does better than 21 and 15. So J. Mac was like, you think he's going to throw more than 21 touchdowns? I'll give you an example. Here are quarterbacks that have thrown for more than 21 touchdowns in a season. Daniel Jones, Blake Bortles, Mitch Trubisky. And Seattle's a good roster and a good organization. They got players here and John Snyder is one of the better GMs. They got a bunch of draft picks. You don't think they'll find three or four more good players. So Sam Howell two years ago threw 21 touchdown passes. Sam Howell. So Darnold can't do that. He's got a number one receiver, no offense, two good backs. And by the way, name the two teams in the league that never miss on wide receivers. The Steelers and the Seahawks. They just draft receivers.
Unknown
Well, I'll just still take the under betting on.
Colin Cowherd
You think he's going to have fewer than 21 touchdown passes?
Unknown
I'll go, I'll go under.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Unknown
I love that game. By the way, when I go to like the grocery store with My kids. I will always do guess the total. You know, price is right over price is right thing. So that's what it feels like with. With Darnold's 21 touchdowns. Was saying, Hey, 17 games. Yes, one touchdown.
Colin Cowherd
Think about that. We live in a world of 17 games. So if Sam just throws one touchdown a game and has a really nice November, he's at 24. If you just do one a game.
Unknown
You think that he's never done it in his career other than last year with Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, Kevin O'Connell. Never done in his career before. Didn't do it with the jets back in the day. Although, you know, it's the Jets.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. Just, you're. My point is, you're making over 21 touchdowns for Darnold. Just sound. Just otherworldly. Sam threw 35 last year, so let's just take a dozen off him.
Unknown
A lot of indoor games, by the way, playing in that division. Detroit.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. For the record, I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. If it snows, it's infrequent. And it's late December. September and October is perfect weather. He plays in a division with warm Arizona, warm L. A, both inside and San Francisco. Miles. He's not going to play in a lot of snow games.
Unknown
Fair.
Colin Cowherd
See, I mean, Seattle gets chilly, you know, about a week.
Unknown
Struggle to grip the football in the rain.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. My guy doesn't. That's your guy. Your guy. It's overcast. Okay. Numbers coming down.
Unknown
I can't. This is just the first of many NFL bets we're going to make this season head to head. I don't. And I don't hate Darnold. I like him.
Colin Cowherd
Sounds like it.
Unknown
Since he was with the Jets.
Colin Cowherd
A huge fan. You're like Buer and LeBron. I love it. But. Or you and Tatum a little bit. No, it's just not. You know, it's just again, I. I'm. I'm not. I said before Sam got his contract. I said. I didn't say Sam deserved 45. I said, he deserves the Baker contract. That's exactly what he signed. And that's what I was told. Sam's people were willing to negotiate. Sam was like, hey, man, I've been in. I've been with the Jets. I've been with Kevin OConnell. I just want stability and a good roster. So I think Sam and Baker Mayfield deserve a ton of credit. They'd seen the dark side. They're like, I mean, Baker goes to Tampa. It's like, I get Mike Evans and Chris Godwin yeah, I'll take a little less. Sam's like, yeah, Seattle's well built.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 1: Aaron Rodgers at This Point
Release Date: March 12, 2025
Host: Colin Cowherd
Platform: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, released on March 12, 2025, Colin delves deep into the latest sports narratives, offering his unfiltered opinions and analyses. Skipping over the numerous advertisements, Colin focuses on key topics such as Aaron Rodgers' potential future, the quarterback situation in the NFL, the Cleveland Cavaliers' impressive performance, and broader insights into the NBA's popularity.
Colin opens the discussion by comparing Aaron Rodgers' current career trajectory to that of Kevin Durant's in the NBA. He highlights how both athletes, once at the pinnacle of their respective sports, have made moves that have arguably diluted their legacies.
Colin Cowherd [03:26]: "Aaron Rodgers has been reduced to that. Think about this, you know what Aaron Rodgers has become, what I compared him to the last four years, he's become Kevin Durant."
He emphasizes that both Rodgers and Durant left stable, championship-winning teams to join less established organizations, driven by personal sentiments and the desire to play alongside friends rather than pursuing further titles.
Colin Cowherd [05:10]: "Both if I. I've mentioned this for years. They're both single guys, rich single guys that get older. Nobody at home to hold them accountable, you know."
Colin critiques their decisions, suggesting that their inability to recognize the greatness of their former teams has hindered their careers.
Colin Cowherd [07:45]: "In life, if you can't tell how green your grass is, then everybody else's grass looks really green."
He concludes that while both athletes remain talented and charismatic, their constant search for something more has led them to less favorable team environments, reducing their effectiveness on the field.
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the ongoing debate between Sam Darnold and Geno Smith as the Seattle Seahawks' quarterbacks. Colin argues fervently in favor of Darnold over Smith, citing his athleticism, age, and recent performance.
Colin Cowherd [13:06]: "Darnold will do better than 21 touchdowns and 15 picks next year."
He challenges the media's negative portrayal of Geno Smith, pointing out Smith's respectable statistics from the previous season but questioning his longevity and ability to lead a team effectively.
Colin Cowherd [16:30]: "I think Sam Darnold, he's got a number one receiver, no offense, two good backs. And by the way, name the two teams in the league that never miss on wide receivers. The Steelers and the Seahawks."
Colin also highlights the strategic benefits of Darnold's recent contract with the Seahawks, describing it as "team-friendly" and beneficial for roster flexibility.
Colin Cowherd [18:15]: "Darnold, seven years younger, had a much better year, much better athlete, mobility wise."
Despite counterarguments from callers about Darnold's career consistency, Colin remains steadfast in his prediction that Darnold will outperform Smith in the upcoming season.
Colin Cowherd [47:21]: "So Sam Darnold, I'll guarantee you he'll go better than 21 touchdowns in 15."
Transitioning from football to basketball, Colin discusses the Cleveland Cavaliers' remarkable 15-game winning streak, marking it as the second time they've achieved such a feat this season. He praises Donovan Mitchell and the team's overall performance, positioning them as one of the league's top contenders.
Colin Cowherd [24:08]: "Cleveland, Cavs. Mitchell, I've been saying this all year. Second best team. The first."
Colin speculates on the Cavaliers' potential to reach the NBA Finals, acknowledging Bill Simmons' optimism while maintaining a cautious stance.
Colin Cowherd [24:58]: "Would you be shocked if they got to the NBA Finals? No."
He analyzes matchups, particularly against the Boston Celtics, emphasizing the importance of player health and team depth in playoff success.
Colin Cowherd [25:21]: "Cleveland and Boston can score down low, can defend the rim, defend the perimeter."
In NFL news, Colin highlights the Buffalo Bills' acquisition of Joey Bosa, praising the strategic nature of the move. He contrasts it with the previous hefty contract given to Von Miller, suggesting that Bosa's one-year deal is both financially savvy and beneficial for the team's defense.
Colin Cowherd [26:23]: "They just can't beat one team. Everybody else in the league. Philadelphia, Kansas City ahead. Buffalo's third. They're fine."
He underscores Bosa's potential impact, considering his age and skill set, while also expressing confidence in the Bills' overall team strength.
Colin Cowherd [27:03]: "So no, I think they still. I think. ... It's a very smart deal. I'm actually surprised there wasn't more of a market because you and I were on the go get Miles Garrett train."
Colin shifts focus to the Chicago Bears, discussing their aggressive approach in the offseason, particularly their interest in drafting Ashton Genti. He debates the Bears' strategy, weighing Genti's potential against other available players and considering the team's existing strengths.
Colin Cowherd [28:40]: "So I think you just take the best player available. ... I think you just take what's there."
He speculates on the Bears' draft moves, suggesting that their pursuit of Genti is a tactical play to prevent other teams from acquiring him.
Colin Cowherd [29:26]: "So my theory is the Bears are floating this because they know Genti is a hot commodity for Dallas, for Denver, several teams."
Despite some skepticism from callers about Genti's readiness, Colin remains analytical, considering the Bears' overall roster needs and potential long-term benefits.
Colin concludes the episode by addressing the NBA's resurgence in popularity, attributing it to strategic player movements and strong team performances in major markets. He disputes claims about the NBA being in decline, pointing to high viewership numbers and successful marketing strategies.
Colin Cowherd [32:00]: "I don't think it's dead. I don't think it's going to the emergency room. Owners happy, Players happy. Adam Silver happy."
He references Jeanie Buss's comments on player movements, such as Luca's transfer to Los Angeles, to illustrate the NBA's dynamic and evolving landscape.
Colin Cowherd [33:53]: "I didn't anticipate the global impact it would have."
Highlighting successful franchises and their fan bases, Colin emphasizes the NBA's robust state, suggesting that strategic player placements in key markets have revitalized the league.
Colin Cowherd [34:04]: "It's like the Dodgers are great. The Mets are fascinating. Yankees good. Braves always good."
Throughout the episode, Colin delivers several memorable quotes that encapsulate his perspectives:
On Athlete Choices:
"In life, if you can't tell how green your grass is, then everybody else's grass looks really green."
[03:26]
On Sam Darnold's Potential:
"I guarantee you he'll go better than 21 touchdowns in 15."
[47:21]
On the Cleveland Cavaliers:
"Cleveland's the only team that Boston has to be completely healthy to beat."
[25:21]
On the NBA's Health:
"The NBA is going to be fine. You don't have to love the NBA but I mean this weekend's a great example."
[33:53]
Colin Cowherd's episode provides an in-depth exploration of current sports dynamics, blending passionate commentary with analytical insights. From dissecting quarterback decisions in the NFL to celebrating basketball achievements in the NBA, Colin offers listeners a comprehensive understanding of where various sports are headed. His ability to intertwine personal opinions with factual data makes for an engaging and thought-provoking listen.
