Now, let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right, here we go. It is Thursday. This is the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. Great show today. So in one hour, I'm going to do what I do once a year. I'm not really into mock drafts because it's just signing up to be wrong like 40 times. But I do right before every NFL draft, I do the top 15 picks. What would I do if I was the general manager of the top 15 teams drafting? I'm not going through the entire first round, but I went through the top 15 one hour from now. Here's who I would draft based on rosters. Need what you've done in free agency? This is what I would do. I've always said if I didn't do this for a living, my dream job, either a screenwriter or an NFL general manager. So in one hour, I'll be the general manager. It is great to have you in. So at the end of yesterday's show, Jordan Schultz filling in for J. Mac this week in one of the Herdline stories, had that Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in America. They did not have Caitlin Clark on the list, but they had two other WNBA players and they had a bunch of other athletes. I love Jalen Hurts. I don't think he's one of the 100 most influential people. I love him. And it just, it struck me I had so many people reach out to me on this yesterday. So I just want you to think of words matter. Influential. Influential is the word Time magazine used. Influential. She played one year of pro basketball in a small market for the worst team in the league and she literally changed the entire financial makeup of the league that defines influential. The WNBA had its most watched season in 24 years, its highest attendance in 22 years, and set records for digital consumption and merchandise sales last year. That is all Caitlin Clark. Six WNBA teams have already preemptively for their games with Caitlin Clark moved to bigger venues. Time magazine used the word influential. I didn't they use that word. Well, Colin, I heard this, Colin. They gave her athlete of the year in America in December and so there was no reason to put her on the April list. All right, so Time magazine is telling me she went from the athlete of the year in America in December. And by April, she's less influential than Brianna Stewart. Yeah, yeah. I'm not going to buy that argument. You think Hollywood in the 90s said, Listen, Tom Hanks, everything he's in is great. He's won back to back Oscars. But you know, let's, let's share the spotlight. Nope. Movie studios were fighting over Tom Hanks. Everybody wanted Tom Hanks because Hollywood, Hollywood's gotten into trouble in the last 10 years when they've tried to make independent movies where women fall in love with fish. And now nobody goes to a theater except for Tom Cruise and Christopher Nolan. Big avenger movies, right? Like the big directors, the big stars play the hits. I've been doing this for 33 years. I've had a pretty good career. TV and radio, podcasting, play the hits. You think Fox upstairs in baseball coverage goes. You know, we've done a lot of Aaron Judge, Ohtani, Juan Soto. Anybody checked out the Mariners schedule lately? Can we squeeze them in? That's never been a discussion ever Here. The NFL this year literally has a new rule. You no longer have to put every team on television at least once because they realized Carolina's not well run. That's a Carolina problem. Why should I force network, cbs, Fox, ABC to put on bad products? So this idea, and I'll say this, there have been a lot of great individual female athletes globally, but in terms of North America and team sports, men have dominated. And because men have dominated this for so long, they get it. UFC just put Jon Jones and Conor McGregor on every big card. It's not about sharing. We'll pay them a fortune. The rest of the guys will pay what we want to. Major League Baseball, Fox coverage, Moro Tani and Aaron Judge. The NFL. It's funny. Lamar Jackson, Patrick Mahomes, the Philadelphia Eagles. You ever notice who they put on television? Big brands all the time. The minute the Pittsburgh Steelers are uninteresting, boom, gone off. Let's put on the Detroit Lions, play the hits. But the wnba, last year, bless their hearts, finally got a star. And they didn't know that. They couldn't figure it out. Well, we don't. We don't want to put too much. Too much Caitlin Clark on. Nope. Every game, every list, every game, every moment, every contest, every All Star game, every single day. All Caitlin Clark. Well, it will offend. Who cares? You didn't make any money in 24 years. You're subsidized by the NBA. Who gives a rep? Who are you offending? Players that don't make revenue. You're subsidized by the NBA. More Caitlin Clark all the time. Always hurting feelings is the reality. ESPN and baseball right now, they've hurt each other's feelings. They'll get over it. If you don't make money, you're not a league. You can't subsidize people forever in sports. So Caitlin Clark changed the financial structure of the league. She's not. Wasn't my word. It was Time magazine's word. They used influential. And now she's not influential. So here's a rule for anybody considering starting a league. And I do think the WNBA got so mocked and criticized they finally figured it out in sports. Don't get caught up in sharing the spotlight because occasionally an athlete will be the spotlight. Don't play nice, play the hits. Caitlin Clark is easily the most influential athlete in a team sport since Michael Jordan. Patrick Mahomes is great. The league was doing fine. Tom Brady retired. The league's doing fine. Far Peyton Manning left fine. They're great. I mean, you could argue Steph Curry is influential because of the way he changed the way basketball is played. Maybe that's the second most influential person. But I mean, the only athlete in my lifetime I can think of that compares to Caitlin Clark. And it's not a team sport. It's golf is Tiger Woods. I mean, Tiger woods literally got people to a television on Sunday for a decade. It was Sopranos after Tiger woods round, I mean, he changed American viewing habits. So just think about this. Six WNBA teams have already preemptively moved the Caitlin Clark games to bigger venues. Time magazine. You used the word. I didn't. You invalidated your list. You made it inauthentic because you were trying to play nice. Don't play nice, play the hits. Okay, so, you know, I, I mostly because very busy, living a very full life, I, I stay off ax a lot. You know, it's like a conspiracy theory platform now. I kind of stay off it. But apparently I made some news. I got a call yesterday afternoon from somebody very close to the Nico Emaliava family. So he's the quarterback at Tennessee, very good, making a lot of money and decides I'm not going to show up to a spring practice. And the story from Tennessee side was he wants a bunch of money and we're not going to give him a raise. We're already paying him two and a half million. We're not going to four. Now his family is saying that's not it. So, you know, you got people at Tennessee Saying it's all about the money. His family say it's not about the money, it's about the fit. I don't know if going to UCLA is better than playing at Tennessee. I think Tennessee's got better players. It makes $150 million a year. It's a huge program. I'm not sure I'd leave Tennessee for UCLA football. But he's a California kid. So I was told in this wild, wild west nil era, as of yesterday, he's going to ucla. Now his family is saying it's not about the money. Tennessee saying eye roll. Give me a break. So I am surprised by this because I said in Southern California it's understood that UCLA is a basketball school. USC is a football school. They got a lot more money. It's private. You can pay people whatever you want and don't have to report it. And usc, Jen Cohen, the athletic director and Lincoln Roddy, they are highly aggressive with football. They are spending a lot of money on nil. UCLA football, I was told two years ago spent less than Utah and around what Oregon State spends. So I thought it was very probable it would be usc. As he transferred. We talked about that a couple of days ago, but I was told yesterday by somebody close to his family it's ucla. Now is it been, is it official yet that we're on day two of a 10 day portal opening? It's not official yet, but I was told Lincoln Riley loves a five star high school football recruit that is in the program now. Hussein Longstreet. He's a very, very, very go to YouTube. Great high school quarterback. Lincoln Riley loves him, doesn't want to send any bad messages or bad vibes that that kid, that freshman will play at least some this year and they want it. They think he's going to be the future of the program. And so UCLA is like, you know, we're going to roll the dice here. But I will say this, and I've said this before, I don't want to hear about how all these young athletes are impoverished and you always have to take the money. I do not think money should drive decisions when you're a great young athlete. I would stay at Duke or Carolina over, go to the G League over $100,000. I mean, I, I'm sorry, you play at duke, you get $30 million of free marketing. The only reason I know who Zion Williamson is, he played a Duke. I'm not watching G League or YouTube videos for high school basketball players. So I don't know if this is a good move, but, but I am told, somebody close to the family that UCLA is the spot. Joel Klatt, who I think we were both surprised Joel Klatt talked about this on my show a couple of days ago. I could see him back on the West Coast. I would, I would think that he wants to be in the Big Ten, I would think, but I think he could wind up somewhere else. I think UNC is interesting. North Carolina, that's, that's just, just to keep your eye on that. The LA schools make a lot of sense. Now, I have heard that there has been a huge, quiet influx of UCLA money. That's all. So I'm not going to be shocked if he winds up at ucla. I am not tied to UCLA boosters and donors. I know a few USC boosters and donors, but if Joel Klatt's hearing it, that validates it for me. So I've heard it to ucla. He's a very talented player. He is absolutely going to be. If he has a good year with UCLA or Tennessee, he's going to be a first round, second round prospect. Long, tall, good arm, just needs to clean it up. But he looks the part, you know, and, and I mean, when I watched him and I watched Jackson dart and I watched both of them, if you told me one of them was going to end up eventually being an NFL star, I would have chosen this kid. Even though his game is not as clean or refined as Jackson dart today. I did think this was interesting. This made me laugh yesterday. So, you know, full disclosure, Urban Meyer is a friend, but everybody is saying, good for Tennessee for taking a stand. Urban Meyer's like, yeah, I've coached in the sec. Forget this stand stuff. As a guy that's been involved almost 40 years in this game, I can't believe this happened. Here's the reality is Tennessee is screwed. They're in a, they got a problem. You lose a potential high draft pick. You, you, you have the backup quarterback left last year, and now you have a redshirt freshman after nine passes and a freshman. You have zero experience. And a portal opens as we speak. They are going to have to go get one. Yeah, I, I kind of get that too. So that's where we are as of now. Time magazine. Stop being nice. Stop, stop worrying about sharing. I mean, again, men dominated team sports in North America. It's not about that. Just, just, man, play the hits, get the stars up front center, rinse, repeat. Rachel Nichols in studio in an hour from now, in 45 minutes from now. I'M going to give you. If I'm the GM, here's what I do with the top 15 picks. I think the Raiders pick is fascinating. I think the jets pick is fascinating when you really have to. When I really sat down today with a team and really wrote down what I thought, I'm the general manager. I think there's one shocker. There'll be one shocker. But I would do it if I was gm. You are now entering the no Bull zone, sponsored by Credible. Great rates, none of the bull. Lot of stuff to talk about today. 40 minutes from now, my top 15 mock draft, who I would draft if I was the GM of these teams. So last night, I gotta tell you a funny story. So moving some of my operations to Chicago over the next several months. And so I bought some season tickets for the Bulls and the Blackhawks. And so my wife last night went to the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls game and she goes, honey, did we buy tickets to a really bad team? I'm like, yes, Chicago's tanking. It's not a very good team right now. And so Miami just blasted them and clobbered him. But as I'm watching the game, I am thinking to myself, wouldn't this be a great place for Kevin Durant? I mean, Miami wins a lot. I know Miami is known as, you know, there's an old saying, a sunny place for shady people. But the Heater grownups, the Dolphins and the Marlins aren't. The Heat are grown ups. They haven't missed the playoffs in back to back years for two decades. Nine conference finals in 20 years. They've been in two finals in the last six years and I don't think they have that good a talent. And Kevin Durant, he can hide. Stars hide. It's an international city. He'll hide. He'll get a major coaching upgrade. Spoelstra from Budenholzer goes to a weaker conference. And oh, by the way, Bam Adebayou, when he played in the Olympics, Bam, a very long, athletic, excellent defender. Will take, will take the tougher defensive assignment. And I'm just looking at it and I'm thinking to myself, you could talk about the Knicks, but it's Tibbs going to be there and his tibs a great fit for kd. Long practices, lot of minutes. That's, that's not what Spoels was going to do. Spoelstra gets stars. The Heat gets stars. Riley Lakers, Heat get stars. The next Tibs almost feel sometimes collegiate, long practices, grinding players in minutes, and then you could say the Celtics. I just don't see Katie as a Boston guy. That's just me. I don't. I don't. And I don't think they're going to make that move. So I kind of have always felt like the Miami Heat are the Warriors East. Great coach, great owner, great gm, excellent culture, miss on draft picks. The whole league does. But get the free agent signings usually right. And I'm looking at kd and I'm like. And I. I've told you before, I love kd. The player, he seems like a nice guy. His career moves drive me nuts. But the Miami Heat do stars well. Peyton, Shaq Wade, LeBron Bosch. I mean, LeBron and Butler left, but, I don't know, seem like they all got. They get to a lot of finals in Miami and they don't always have the best roster. I mean, Jimmy Butler got to a couple finals. I didn't like the roster. I like Jimmy Butler. And Tyler Herro was good last night. I'm hit and miss on him. So just a thought as I watch them clobber Chicago beginning to end last night. Katie, no state tax, winter league, mostly. Pat Riley, Spolstra. That feels like a good fit to me. Jordan with the news.
Jordan Schultz
No, no, no, no.
Colin Cowherd
Turn on the news. This is the Herd line news.
Jordan Schultz
All right, calling. The Mavericks beat the Kings last night to keep their playoff hopes alive. Anthony Davis. Yeah, 27, 7 and 9.
Colin Cowherd
He was good.
Jordan Schultz
While Mr. Clay, 23 on 8 for 11 shooting, very efficient. After the game, Thompson told the media, quote, we wanted to give the city of Dallas something to be proud of. Speaking of the word proud, Colin, we've talked so much about Luca in that trade going to the Lakers, but how about the fact that you have two future hall of Famers and Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis? Yeah, they got some pride too, man. And I think it'd be foolish of us as basketball fans, as lovers of the NBA, to put that aside and forget the fact that these guys want to do something special, too.
Colin Cowherd
If before Kyrie Irving tore his acl, so who knows if he comes back the same player. But before that happened, I had a very unpopular opinion. In the short term, if they were healthy, they're better than the Lakers and Luka now, long term, I'm taking Luka in his prime, of course, but they have the best center rotation in the league before Kyrie got hurt. One of the best closers all time and certainly in the league. Now under six four, big, athletic. They need another playmaker to take the ease and the burden off Kyrie Irving playing 38 minutes a night, but they've got a really good roster. But it all fell apart simultaneously and so it makes the trade, which was a bad trade, look catastrophic. If Kyrie was playing right now and AD and you have a healthy roster, this team's absolutely capable of getting to the Western Conference finals. They've got good players, just most of them are banged up.
Jordan Schultz
Yeah. If you think about it last season in the play in game, Clay goes over 10. Over 10? Yeah. Last night, 8 for 11, 23 points.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, he played well.
Jordan Schultz
Speaking of pride, I mean Talking about a four time NBA champion, Clay Davis is a top 75 player. It was cool to see that, at least temporarily. Derrick Henry signed a two year, $16 million contract with Baltimore in 2024 and it paid off immediately. Henry ran for just under 2000 yards, had a league high 16 tuds. The Ravens could extend the 31 year old running back to give the team more cap flexibility and keep him in Baltimore long term. Here's Ravens GM Eric DaCosta talking about his running back.
Colin Cowherd
We have a lot of different balls in the air right now. That's probably what I would say on that. You know, I'm not going to talk about what we're doing, what we're not doing behind the scenes business wise with these guys. I don't think it's good for me to do that. We're blessed to have a bunch of really good players and we're going to try and keep as many of those guys as we can.
Jordan Schultz
You know, it's interesting because we saw it last year with Saquon. Now the Philadelphia Eagles just extended Barkley and he has two years or had two years left on his contract. It would make a lot of sense, too much sense for me when I think about the Ravens to extend Derrick Henry. They have other guys, Linder Baum, Kyle Hamilton, Isaiah likely other guys that could extend.
Colin Cowherd
Well, he's one of their six core players.
Jordan Schultz
To me it's a no brainer.
Colin Cowherd
He.
Jordan Schultz
He already proved his worth.
Colin Cowherd
I could see moving off Mark Edwards, the tight endrews. Yeah, Mark Andrews, it's a good tight end. Draft. Yeah, he's getting more banged up. That's a tough physical position. Tight ends can age very, very quickly. I like Mark Andrews, but I would move off him at this point if I had to save money. I get that move.
Jordan Schultz
But there's no downside, right, to extending Derrick Henry. He is a unicorn. He's 31. He plays like he's 25. There's no age there. Okay, this is pretty cool. Shohei Ohtani continues to impress. He blasted his leadoff home run 448ft.
Colin Cowherd
Wow. Oh, look at that. Oh.
Jordan Schultz
Now Ohtani's tie for the league lead at that.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, my Lord.
Jordan Schultz
But this is his 12th homer. Colin. Of over 445ft. Now, why does that matter? Ohtani's got more home runs of over 445 than any other Dodger since they've started tracking the stat a decade ago. He's been on the team a little over a year.
Colin Cowherd
That's not that far from leaving the stadium. That is a bomb.
Jordan Schultz
He was seen pouring his teammates water, by the way. This is how unselfish this guy is. There was a great clip of him. He's getting water. Looks like he's Thursday. No, he's actually getting water for his teammates. I would argue. Colin, and I'm curious where you're at on this. Is this the greatest free agency signing in MLB history?
Colin Cowherd
Well, he's the greatest player in baseball history.
Jordan Schultz
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
He's the most skilled player of all time. Yeah. I mean, I. I believe two years ago the Dodgers said. Because the Dodgers spend money, and a couple of years ago, they started restructuring deals and spent a little less than usual. I think the Dodgers saw several years ago, this is the guy. A better version of Babe Ruth. Yeah. And he's such a good. I mean, honestly, he looks like a movie star. Yeah. He is such a good looking, humble kid. It's just amazing.
Jordan Schultz
Yeah. It's interesting because we have. I'm in New York. That's where I live. We have Aaron Judge, who's kind of our version of Ohtani. Maybe not quite the same. And I was at a Yankee game the other day, and people were talking about Aaron Judge and how great he is. And I asked a couple Yankee fans, I said, would you take Ohtani over Judge? And they all. They both said, you know, we love Judge. We love. But yes, Ohtani is the only guy.
Colin Cowherd
Yes.
Jordan Schultz
That transcends the sport.
Colin Cowherd
Absolutely.
Jordan Schultz
So he's perfect for la.
Colin Cowherd
Baseball's lucky right now. If you look at baseball's best players, and this isn't always the case. They're all. Well, they're all good guys. Bryce Harper's a great guy. Mookie Betts, a great guy.
Jordan Schultz
Crowd's boring, but a Great guy.
Colin Cowherd
Oltani, Aaron, Judge. Like it does matter that the guys that are front and center are like good people. That doesn't always work that way. You can get some, you know, problematic guys, but baseball's got it humming right now. Their stars are in the right market and they're all like friendly, humble, good teammates. Like, it's a good spot. Yeah, I would agree, Jordan, with the news. Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the herd lie news, you know, it's. There's an old saying, don't out think the room. And maybe it's a guy thing, but sometimes, you know, I'm trying to be smart and I'm breaking something down and I've got a big decision in my life and I've had smarter people than me say, you know, maybe it's an agent, maybe it's a boss or something. Somebody says, yeah, I wouldn't out think the room on this. And so, you know, I'm hearing all these stories about Shadour Sanders, Dion's son dropping in the draft. So let's say that happens and he becomes really good. I want you to think about a few things. Are we overthinking the room? So number one, he's the son of a legend that's worked a few times. He was not only accurate, but with an atrocious O line. He is the most accurate college quarterback ever. Major conference, 74%. He actually played very well, unlike Jackson dart against the best teams. He didn't have to win. He played well. He carried a battle line and no run game to 33 points a game. So if you don't draft him in your Cleveland or the Giants or maybe even the jets, are you going to look up and go, yeah, yeah, we probably out thought the room. Like, I always understood passing on Josh Allen, who's amazing. He didn't get any college scholarships. He went to a juco. He was crazy wild. Greg Cosell told me going into his last year of college, he goes, keep your eye on this kid. So I watched him against Oregon and Iowa. He was a turnover machine. He was inaccurate. He was wild. Played small college football. Like, like I get people going, yeah, I like him, but we want to win now. And he's like three years away. I don't know. I look at Shador Sanders, he checks a lot of boxes and this whole thing about, well, he doesn't have any great traits. Okay, I want you to think about this. This is out. Think in the room, how many great quarterbacks are there in the NFL? Like Lamar's great. Mahomes, great Burrow, great. Allen, great. Now, I would say Matt Stafford, jalen hurts. There's C.J. stroud. There's some really, really, really good guys. And Stafford may be great. Aaron was years ago. So there's five or six great quarterbacks. Fourteen teams make the playoffs, meaning good or very good quarterbacks. Get you to the playoffs. And in the NFL, what you're trying to avoid is what the Colts have going, which is, yeah, this is not working at all at quarterback. That because the Colts have the gm, they got the coach, they got a good roster. Yeah, this isn't working at all. I got 50 college games, 74% completion percentage, battle line, 33 a game. You keep telling me he's not mobile. I keep watching the film. He's mobile. It's not Lamar mobile, but he's not Jared Goff. He's more than mobile. I mean, Mahomes, you know, you watch Mahomes and you see, oh, that's great. Get great out of here. Good. Makes the playoffs. Trevor Lawrence has made the playoffs. Kirk Cousins, Jared Goff. Good. Makes the playoffs. So good is clearly good enough for your franchise to be playing in January. And isn't that really what it's about? I mean, two. I've said this about two. I'm not a huge TUA fan. Two is good. I don't think he's very good, but he's good. And two got the bag. And everybody on their show. I mean, Dak is good. Good. Now, I wouldn't pay Dak great money, but Dax, good. I don't know. I just. I think. Sometimes I think I know. Joel Klatt on Tuesday discussed what makes him NFL ready. You cannot question his accuracy. He is lethal. He can put the football in a shoebox. Really, Anywhere on the field. Mostly inside the numbers. I've told you how bad Colorado was before they got there. And everybody immediately talks about the coach prime effect or the Travis Hunter effect. What took them from one win to nine wins was, yes, those guys. But mainly it was Shador. It was the fact that he was a great quarterback. Yeah, I. I don't know. I. So I will have my mock draft in 25 minutes of the top 15 teams. And there are certain teams in this league. I don't know how you pass on him. I don't really get it. The herd streams 24 hours a day, seven days a week, within the iHeartRadio app. Search herd to listen live or on demand whenever you'd like. Colin Cowherd
Okay, I very excited. I do it once a year. I'm going to do my mock draft. Top 15 draft picks at the top of next hour. I've told you before, I'm delusional. If I didn't do this, which is pretty easy compared to a screenwriter or an NFL general manager, I would be, I would want to be a GM and but when I went to school, my my college, Eastern Washington University, did not have a major in NFL personnel. So I ended up talking. But I love this. I'm into it. You know, I love the draft and so we're going to do that in 20 minutes. I'm going to have a mock draft. And I'll give you reasons. I think it's well thought out. I think, you know, I may miss on 14 or 15, but I really think I'm right. It's almost like when you buy a Powerball ticket. I start thinking, you know, I could use a boat, a second car. I've already won that thing every time I play it and I know I'm looking at this mock draft and I'm like, these teams are idiotic if they don't listen to me. These are brilliant picks, I think, I think you'll enjoy it. We'll say that. Okay, so a lot of times there is. Because something is great for a long time, it sort of gets embedded with us. It may be a local restaurant that's good for a long time. And even if the service gets bad, you're kind of used to it, you love it and you keep going. And I will give you an example. Boeing. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Boeing was very prideful, leading exporter in the U.S. you know, the pride of American engineering. And Boeing's having troubles. If you googled problems with Boeing right now, you know, since 2018, $51 billion in operating losses and they just had a door plug recently rip off a plane at 33,000ft. Boeing, you know the term now to talk about Boeing should be, if it's Boeing, I'm not going. It's, it's struggling as a company and they've had whistleblowers and problems. And I mean it just, there's controversy every 15 minutes with Boeing. It makes me think about the planes I'm flying seriously. And I think the Pittsburgh Steelers have become that. If I said to you there's this NFL team, well, who just listen, they haven't won a playoff game in eight years and it's April, mid April. They don't know who their starting quarterback is. Does that sound like a well run operation? Diana Rossini, yesterday we talked about the Steelers. Aaron Rodgers, here she is. I think Aaron Rodgers is definitely sitting back going. I want to go to a place where I can drop right in like Tom Brady did in Tampa Bay and win a Super bowl this year. I don't think, I don't think the Pittsburgh Steelers are built to win. I can tell you. I spoke to Pittsburgh this morning. No updates. Think about this. No updates at right, right now. At this point, as we're a week out from the draft, they still have no idea whether or not Aaron Rodgers is going to sign with them. They still want them. But I just think Aaron knows he's got the leverage in the situation here and he may just sit this thing out and wait. It's, it's April. I mean the, the teams that are well run in this league like the Chiefs and the Rams have moved off like super bowl level quarterbacks or, or playoff level quarterbacks. Steelers don't have a quarterback. So now I believe I've said this Aaron's too smart to make a dumb decision. I don't think Pittsburgh fits at all. Now, I could be wrong. He'd make a big announcement and I could be wrong. But if you want to be a Steeler, my guess is he would be a stealer right now. If everyone would be a stealer, he'd be a Steeler. He would have announced it two weeks ago. And so I think the smart move here for Aaron Rodgers, the very smart move is, hey, I'm gonna wait for the draft and see where the chips fall on quarterbacks. I don't want to become Kirk Cousins, an older quarterback. I go to a team, then they draft the quarterback and there's controversy and the young quarterback, I mean, Aaron doesn't want to go somewhere where they draft a quarterback and the young quarterbacks getting snaps, attention. And if he has a bad game, everybody's like, play the young guy. They don't want to go there. So I think Aaron Smartly is sitting back and going, yeah, I'm not, I'm not, I'm not really interested in enrolling the dice with Pittsburgh. So that's my take. Here's another story that is. Listen, I know that all you guys, I see the reaction. Bill Belichick dating a girl in his 20s. It's kind of icky, you know, like, like 15 years younger than his son. It's, it's, it, whatever. I'm not a moralist. Whatever. I'm not even going to tell you what my wife said, but. So Belichick's girlfriend told North Carolina not to introduce Steve Belichick as Bill's son to combat nepotism claims. Like, we can't all figure out that his son. Whatever. So I, what I think is interesting about Belichick in college, so I initially strongly believed that he showed no indications of ever wanting to coach in college. You know, believe what people show you and tell you. Believe their actions. Bill was a bad drafter. He didn't watch college football on Saturdays. He wasn't sitting down watching UCLA and Oregon State. Clearly he didn't draft well. The coaches that really draft well or have a draft feel like Jimmy Johnson loved college football. I know, I work with Jimmy. Jimmy loves watching college football. That's why he was so good drafting it when he became a cowboy coach. Right. Bill doesn't. And so my initial take is it would be like a gap year. Carolina was going to be like, like, like a layover in an airport. Right. A couple hours. And that his contract even stipulated he could leave pretty quickly. And that he would go to Philadelphia or Buffalo. Well, they like Sean McDermott in Buffalo, and Sirianni just won a Super Bowl. So, you know, Bill's, Bill's staying at Carolina for the time being. But I will tell you the other thing that's really clear is he doesn't appear to have a lot of NFL interest. That was clear. And the couple organizations that I thought he would go back for, one just won the Super Bowl. That's clear. And I do think, you know, dating somebody in their 20s feels a little awkward. It's one of those things among guys, you're like thumbs up. In the corporate world of the NFL, it would be a little wonky. So I do think Bill's going to stay at college football. I did not think this six months to a year ago. I think he's a stay at college football. I think he'll be pretty successful because I think now you don't have to go, you know, beat the bushes for high school players. You can go buy college kids. The nil. Helps Bill, but, you know, the whole girlfriend thing, she's kind of like running his brand now. And it's. I mean, I, I, again, I'm not a moralist, whatever, but it's just, it's just a little odd to me. And I do not think it's viewed by the NFL as, you know, copacetic. It's kind of like that's, that's, that's, you know. Belichick's also 73, and he's not a Pete Carroll. 70. Pete Carroll's like, young and joyful and fun and laughing and aspirational. Pete is a different personality. I had said Raiders go higher. Pete Bears higher. Pete like Pete. Some people are 70 and feel 50. Nick Saban's close to 70. Nick Saban feels mid-50s. He's talking a mile a minute. Belichick looks his age and kind of is grumpy like his age. And so I don't know when I, when I watch the whole New England thing, I'm fascinated by it. At Carolina, is the Patriot way in a year gonna be. Dude lost his way. Because I'm just watching all this Internet stuff and the girlfriend, and I'm not, I'm not judging you. Do you. But it is weird. And I don't think people in the NFL look at it and go, yeah, yeah. He. This is a guy that is current. We like. He went to espn. And Bill's one of those guys that when he laughs on tv, it looks like he's struggling to Laugh like it's not natural and fun, and it's kind of. It felt a little forced. Courtesy laugh. And so he was trying to rebrand. And I get it. I'm not. You know, whatever. She's probably a wonderful person. But as I watch this whole thing and I'm seeing the video this week, and she's kind of running the show, I'm like, Jordan, It. It just feels a little odd.
Jordan Schultz
The video of her that we just saw, where she walks up to him at practice, There's a ton of guys running it. It's weird. It's. It's just weird. Okay. And I understand that they're. They. They've been dating. They're in a relationship. This is it right here.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Yeah.
Jordan Schultz
What is she. What is her authority? Nothing against her, but what is her.
Colin Cowherd
This is not a personal attack. What it is, is the winningest football coach in the history of the NFL, the most important coach since Bill Walsh. I mean, he's on the Mount Rushmore, and he goes to college, and I didn't really buy it, but I hope he does well because I like college football, and I'd love to watch him and I. And, you know, listen in Bill we trust. I sat at the other company and for 10 years, watched every Patriot game practice. Anything I could get my hands on. I'm rooting for him. But I. This. I mean, you can't avoid. With all the social platforms now, you can't avoid this stuff. No. If you turn your phone on, these images of Bill, the girlfriend Caroline, are flying in, talking about and practiced.
Jordan Schultz
I don't get it. Why is she there? There's no other girlfriend or spouse at a practice.
Colin Cowherd
You know what it shows me? He's staying in college because. Because he's smart enough to know.
Jordan Schultz
Do that in college.
Colin Cowherd
He's smart enough to know that, you know, there's. Owners are looking at it, going, yeah. All right.
Jordan Schultz
I don't. I don't get it. You said the word icky. That's. It's just.
Colin Cowherd
And I'm not judging on that.
Jordan Schultz
Talking about her at practice, it just. It doesn't send a good message. That's. That's.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. And you and I are not. I mean, I know you well enough. Even though I blew you off for dinner.
Jordan Schultz
You did blow me out for dinner. Although, you know, listen, you didn't feel well.
Colin Cowherd
I didn't.
Jordan Schultz
I went to the restaurant by myself, had a glass of wine.
Colin Cowherd
I still don't feel well. But I'm not missing my mock draft day, so it's just, you know, I don't think I come across as a moralist. But stuff can be off putting. It's like, yeah, that's it.
Jordan Schultz
Off putting. Good word.
Colin Cowherd
If you went with your wife and my wife to dinner and with a 70 year old and the girlfriend was 20, we'd be talking about it. I mean, whatever.
Jordan Schultz
That would be the entire topic of conversation after dinner. Hey, what do you, what do you think about that?
Colin Cowherd
I'm just, you know what, maybe, maybe I'm being too judgy. Whatever. Okay. Rachel Nichols. The mock draft that nobody's been waiting for. The mock draft I'm waiting for. And I believe these are smart picks. I'm the gm. This is what I would do. Based on your free agency, your needs, your lack of production contracts. Yeah, you know, I, I'm going to look at the top 15 team. This is what I would do. Not sure how many will be right, but it's next hour to the herd. Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Episode: Hour 1 - Caitlin Clark is very influential
Release Date: April 17, 2025
Host/Author: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
In the first hour of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," host Colin Cowherd, alongside co-host Jordan Schultz, delves into a variety of pressing sports topics, ranging from influential athletes to NFL draft strategies. The episode kicks off at [02:55] with Colin expressing his enthusiasm for conducting a mock NFL draft, a segment he typically reserves for once a year. He sets the stage by announcing his intent to simulate the decision-making process of an NFL general manager for the top 15 draft picks, emphasizing his passion for the draft despite self-professed skepticism about mock drafts.
A significant portion of the discussion centers around Caitlin Clark and her substantial impact on the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). Colin references a recent omission of Clark from Time magazine's list of the 100 most influential people in America, despite her notable contributions to the league.
Colin highlights Clark's role in transforming the WNBA's financial landscape, citing increased viewership, highest attendance figures in 22 years, and record-breaking digital consumption and merchandise sales. He underscores that six WNBA teams have proactively moved Clark's games to larger venues to accommodate the surge in interest.
Jordan counters by mentioning Clark's recent accolade as Athlete of the Year, suggesting her influence might be recognized in upcoming lists. However, Colin remains steadfast, arguing that the Time magazine's initial assessment failed to capture her enduring impact.
Transitioning to the NFL draft, Colin outlines his approach to the mock draft, emphasizing the importance of team needs, roster assessments, and free agency activities. He plans to present his top 15 draft picks, providing insights based on his extensive experience in sports media.
Colin discusses various teams' drafting strategies, predicting potential surprises and highlighting his belief in his own draft analysis accuracy, even likening the process to purchasing a "Powerball ticket."
The conversation shifts to college football, focusing on quarterback transfers and their implications for major programs. Colin reveals insights about Joel Klatt's potential move, emphasizing the competitive environment of the NCAA's Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) era.
He debates the merits of transferring for factors beyond financial compensation, such as team fit and program strength, ultimately suggesting that UCLA is a likely destination for Joel Klatt despite Tennessee's prestigious program.
Colin and Jordan turn their attention to the NBA, specifically analyzing performances and team dynamics involving stars like Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis.
They discuss the Dallas Mavericks' recent victory over the Kings, highlighting Anthony Davis's efficiency and Klay Thompson's contributions. Colin reflects on the trade's long-term implications, noting the potential for Luka Doncic to elevate the Mavericks further.
The discussion broadens to Major League Baseball, spotlighting Shohei Ohtani's extraordinary performance and comparing him to iconic players like Aaron Judge.
Colin Cowherd [26:14]: "That's not that far from leaving the stadium. That is a bomb."
Jordan Schultz [28:01]: "That transcends the sport."
They laud Ohtani's unselfishness, citing a clip where he assists teammates by offering water, and debate whether his signing with the Dodgers marks the greatest free agency move in MLB history.
A more personal topic arises as Colin and Jordan discuss Bill Belichick's relationship with a significantly younger woman and its potential impact on his coaching legacy.
They express skepticism about Belichick's decision to stay in college football amidst personal life changes, questioning how this might affect his standing within the NFL.
Colin speculates that Belichick's personal choices might be influencing his professional decisions, suggesting that the NFL might view his relationship unfavorably.
As the episode progresses towards its conclusion, Colin reiterates his commitment to presenting a well-thought-out mock draft, forecasting it as an eagerly anticipated segment among listeners.
He promises insightful analysis based on team needs and free agency moves, encouraging listeners to stay tuned for what he anticipates will be both accurate and compelling predictions.
Colin Cowherd [05:00]: "Caitlin Clark is easily the most influential athlete in a team sport since Michael Jordan."
Colin Cowherd [25:00]: "I don't think money should drive decisions when you're a great young athlete."
Colin Cowherd [27:03]: "He's the greatest player in baseball history."
Colin Cowherd [37:49]: "I think there's one shocker. There'll be one shocker. But I would do it if I was gm."
Jordan Schultz [47:35]: "Do that in college."
The episode effectively balances in-depth sports analysis with personal anecdotes, offering listeners a comprehensive look into current sports dynamics and the intricate decision-making processes behind player selections and team strategies. Colin Cowherd's passionate discourse on Caitlin Clark's influence underscores the evolving landscape of women's sports, while his mock draft anticipation sets the stage for engaging future content. The candid discussions about personal lives of sports figures like Bill Belichick provide a holistic view of the sports world, blending professional evaluations with personal insights.
Listeners can look forward to the forthcoming mock draft segment, where Colin will extrapolate his general manager instincts to predict the top 15 NFL draft picks, promising a blend of expertise and entertainment.
