Steve Covino
What's up, buddies? Kavino and Rich. And for Colin on the herd, surprise most suckers.
Rich Davis
It's us, Kavino and Rich.
Steve Covino
Feel like all I've been doing the last week is just walking into rooms like I'm Kendrick Lamar or singing that stupid chapel roan song.
Rich Davis
You know, you keep bringing up the stupid chaperone song Pink Pony Club and somehow I've avoided it. Good for you. Stop trying to bring it into my life. That's Rich Davis. I'm Steve Covino. Just a kid from Union, New Jersey, out here in the mean streets of la. Yeah, with this blockhead.
Steve Covino
Mean streets. You live in Sherman Oak.
Rich Davis
CNR on FSR the number because we'd like to get interactive. 87799 on Fox. Always a pleasure to be in for Colin on the Herd. Hit us up at Covino and Richard and Happy Valentine's, papi. Happy Valentine's.
Steve Covino
Happy Valentine's papi.
Rich Davis
We got big sexy Ryan on the ones and twos and he's extra Sexy with his Mr. Nose underwear today. Nice. I saw that. All red looking hot. Big sexy Ryan. We got bo. He's got your headline news. He's hanging out with us. And thank you Fox sports Radio Nation for being with us.
Steve Covino
That happy Valentine's papi. That Ryan just played Happy Valentine's puppy. There was a girl that interned for us over a decade ago and that's actually her because she would say ballentines with a B poppy every time.
Rich Davis
Over a decade ago. Like way over a decade ago.
Steve Covino
I'm just trying to age you.
Rich Davis
She's like 70 years ago.
Steve Covino
She's a grandma now.
Rich Davis
She's definitely a granny by now.
Steve Covino

I just want to remind everybody before we dive into this to stop at the gas station on your way home. Make sure you buy flowers, guys. Bring the romance. That's what women want. Gas station presents today. Remember, they want the Russell Stovers and the gas station flowers.
Steve Covino
Yeah, the cheap little bouquet. Because you are a dummy and forgot.
Rich Davis
And that's just one tip of the day. We got plenty as the day goes on. So let's get into it. We're going to talk some Valentine's Day, right? Like, do you have to go out tonight? How do you make it romantic? How do you balance sports and love? We'll get to all of this. I'll say, ripping. Ripping like mark in front of your girl ripping.
Steve Covino
That's funny.
Rich Davis
Ripping ass.
Steve Covino
Well, there's a story about Jason Kelsey we're going to get to. We're going to talk some baseball right around the corner. We'll be diving into the baseball season. So a lot on the way.
Rich Davis
We'll be diving headfirst like Jim Edmonds, bro.
Steve Covino
Let's go.
Rich Davis
So I want to start off by saying, last night, Thursday night, Thursday the new Friday night heading into Valentine's weekend, it was also Galentine's Day, right? That's the trend. Happy Galentine's Day. So the ladies went out and partied, and they're like, f. The guys. Guys are stupid.
Steve Covino
Is that what Galentine's Day is?
Rich Davis
Right?
Steve Covino
I don't know.
Rich Davis
I don't know. So I figured you and I could bro it up, have a broentine's day maybe on Sunday or something. What do you think?
Steve Covino
That sounds fantastic. I don't know.
Rich Davis
But so last night, I was bringing the romance, and I was saying hey to my girlfriend. I was like, why don't we watch something romantic? She's like, like what? I'm like, like, Cobra Kai. Perfect. Yeah. Cobra Kai's back. So, yeah, there it is. Sexy Ryan. The greatest song that ever was.
Steve Covino
You know, the song was supposed to be fun fact in Rocky 3.
Rich Davis
Rocky 2, I think I believe.
Steve Covino
3.
Rich Davis
Really? Well, one of the Rockies. Yeah.
Steve Covino
Rocky 3 for sure. For a fact. I know, because it lines up. It was supposed to be the one with Mr. T. Clubber Lang, and they ended up going with Eye of the Tiger. And they pass this along to Karate Kid.
Rich Davis
I thought the history repeats itself part was the fact that he fought Apollo again.
Steve Covino
He fought Clover Lang twice.
Rich Davis
Oh, and just do the math.
Steve Covino
Rocky 1 was 76. Rocky 2 is 79. Rocky 3 was early to mid-80s, like Karate Kid, you know, And I think.
Rich Davis
That would have added a lot, but it added a lot to one of our favorites. 1985 or 84. 85. Classic, the Karate Kid. So if you guys don't know, they turned that into a major. Well, YouTube Red at the time. The Netflix show, right?
Steve Covino
84, by the way.
Rich Davis
84. We were sliding around in our socks, doing crane kicks in the kitchen. Karate Kid. Impactful moment for a lot of our. Our childhood, Right? Who would have thought I'd turn out to be an All Valley champion myself out here in California?
Steve Covino
When I moved out here, I thought karate would be a way bigger deal.
Rich Davis
So we're actually live exactly from where this show is supposed to take place?
Steve Covino
Yeah, no doubt.
Rich Davis
Now I'm watching last night. It's the final season. It's the final five, six episodes of the final season. Like part two of the final season. So it's wrapping up. All the episodes were released last night and few observations. It is really cool to see them cruising around the streets of la right where we work. In fact, they pass Fox Sports Radio. They pass it. And I got a little tingle in my broadcasting dingle. I was like, ah, that's right where we work. That's so cool. And all the places that we go and we frequent, it's all there in the show. So it hits us a little stronger. But I'm watching. I'm getting fired up about the Sakai Takai and Tory Nichols. I'm a big fan of Peyton List, Torrey Nichols and all the characters and Miguel. And I like the show. I like Johnny Lawrence. I'm Eagle Fang all the way. I'm Cobra Kai. Never dies. My question for you. And by the way, Rich.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
There's some cameos that you're gonna be so jealous of in the final season. There's some cameos, word up. Some broadcasters that we know personally are in it. You know, when Jim Lampley shows up in a Rocky movie or, hey, like, hey, that's. That's the guy. That's. That's the classy James Lennon Jr.
Steve Covino
If you tell me, like, Jonas or like Ben Maller is in Karate Kid, I'm already jealous that Dan Patrick's gon the new Happy Gilmore.
Rich Davis
Well, you're gonna be jealous, but you're gonna be happy for the guy. There's a few special surprises in the last few episodes. Can't give it away yet again. It just came out last night. I got one more episode left, so I don't even know where it goes. All I have to say is this. Here's my observations. The first two of the new slew of episodes were really slow and kind of whack, but then it kicks in high gear, and I heard it ends tremendously, so it really kicks in. Nice. Okay? And I know it's a goofy show, trust me. I just find it entertaining.
Steve Covino
Well, football's over. We're finding things to watch. And then we said, cobra Kai's out. Love is Blind, the dumb reality show to watch with, you know, the wifey.
Rich Davis
And got to sit through two of build up about the Sakai Takai, this big karate tournament. And then it really kicks in, and now I'm like, ooh, edge of my seat. But the question here, Fox Sports Radio Nation.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Of all the sports movies we grew up watching, Flash it back on a Friday, Valentine's puppy. Of all the sports movies.
Steve Covino
You know, oddly enough, when people talk about their favorite sports movies, they forget to incorporate karate because you'll hear people be like, oh, yeah, Hoosier is Rocky. You know, feel the dreams. No one ever says Karate Kid, because in their mind, they're like, well, is it a sports movie? It's. Karate's a sport, right?
Rich Davis
It was our version of Rocky, you know, and karate was a big thing, at least in my life. As a kid, I wanted to be a little karate master. Taekwondo kid is what I was. So, yeah, it's very much a sports movie, martial arts movie, but I put it in that genre of movies, for sure. Of all the sports movies we grew up with, think about them. The ones we grew up with. 80s, 90s.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
If you're older, that's fine, too. I'm here to say. And you could debate it all you want. We could chop it up, you can get involved. 8, 7, 7, 9, 9 on Fox.
Steve Covino
Actually, the number. The number's different, right?
Rich Davis
Well, not according to this.
Steve Covino
We're filling in for Colin. I think the number is. I don't know. How do I be.
Rich Davis
Find it here? Well, I have a piece of paper that says it.
Steve Covino
Eight, seven, seven for the herd. Oh, you're Ron Burgundy. Dude, if I put whatever you put down.
Rich Davis
Thanks for.
Steve Covino
You'd read.
Rich Davis
So, yeah.
Steve Covino
So. 877 for the herd.
Rich Davis
Thanks for making yourself useful, buddy.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah. You got a pal.
Rich Davis
Richard shows up in his Hustle sweatshirt. So on all the movies we grew up watching, I'm here to say that I think, in fact, I feel my corazon on this Valentine's Day, my heart of hearts, that it's the number one sports movie that fired us up the most as kids. Meaning when you watched it, you wanted to do karate, you're doing crane kicks, you're doing kung fu and karate moves, jumping off the couch. Which one fired you up the most? The most motivating as a kid, for me, I think the answer is clearly Karate Kid number one, based on Cobra Kai.
Steve Covino
More Than like, the Rocky movies as a kid.
Rich Davis
Yeah, because I was like, I could do that. I didn't think I was gonna jump in a ring and fight Apollo Creed, you know, I was like, oh, I could be an All Valley karate champion.
Steve Covino
Well, when the show. Cobra Kai did kick off, sign up.
Rich Davis
For karate class, I didn't think I was gonna go in there and be the next. The next Spider Rico.
Steve Covino
When you.
Rich Davis
Absolutely.
Steve Covino
When Cobra Kai did kick off on Netflix and was at its height a couple years back, they did say around the country karate signups for kids were high.
Rich Davis
Without a doubt, I took karate as a kid.
Steve Covino
But as far as motivational, I mean, I know. I know.
Rich Davis
I know you the one that fired you up the most, you put it on vhs. You were, you know, practicing moves on your siblings. You. You thought that you could be that kid. And by the way, Daniel LaRusso for me, I was born in Newark, New Jersey. I'm from Union, like I said. But he was from Newark in the movie, and he moved to la. Much like your boy you're looking at right now.
Steve Covino
I think you just. You have a personal connection to the story.
Rich Davis
I feel like, hey, that guy.
Steve Covino
I think if you're talking about movies that fired you up as a kid, I know you're saying, well, karate was attainable because you could just join a karate class. Rocky iv, by far, because every kid had the soundtrack. Even if you were a little kid, you were doing fake workouts in your house. When you maybe, you know, were a teenager, you had the Rocky 4 soundtrack on your Walkman.
Rich Davis
I mean, how could I say that's a bad answer?
Steve Covino
Rocky 4 is the number one answer. I mean, Drago kills Apollo. You know, Rocky grows a beard, and he's living in Russia for a month or so without Adrian. I mean, that, to me, is the ultimate motivating.
Rich Davis
When he climbs and he jogs up the mountain, Drago, that's.
Steve Covino
Come on, that's number one.
Rich Davis
Yo. I'm not gonna say it's a bad answer. I love that. But I still believe I thought about this. I didn't just, you know, say it, because I watched Cobra Kai last night. I was thinking about it. I'm like, you know, of all the movies that fired me up most as a kid, it was Karate Kid. It was because it was the kid version of Rocky. That's really what it was. And we're not making that up. That's why the soundtrack was similar. That's why that song was originally meant for Rocky.
Steve Covino
Rocky, kid, I have an answer. That Was impactful in the dumbest way. It's not Rocky, it's another Stallone movie.
Rich Davis
Well, you know, yesterday was the anniversary of over the Top. Did you see that?
Steve Covino
Well, you took the words right out of my mouth. They're meatloaf.
Rich Davis
But did you know that?
Steve Covino
I did not.
Rich Davis
It came out 38 years ago this weekend. Well, yesterday, to be exact.
Steve Covino
If you're telling me if you were a kid of the 80s or 90s, if you didn't at one point turn your hat around and arm wrestle one of your buddies and try to do that, Move your hand around like Stallone.
Rich Davis
Yeah, but that didn't get me all motivated as a kid. Like, again, where you just lose it and you're on the bed jumping around doing crane kicks. No way. You know, for that, it's maybe a certain wrestling match you may have seen a certain Wrestlemania. Rocky is definitely a top three answer. Rocky four, you said specifically. I agree with you. But as far as sports movies, that really motivated you. Like, maybe it was a baseball movie, maybe it was major League, maybe it was sandlot or something like that. But no, I know, I'm sorry, I'm sorry. It's gotta be Karate Kidd.
Steve Covino
You know what motivated me the most? Eastbound and down. Kenny Powers taught me to never give up on my dreams. And he taught me about the importance of fiction.
Rich Davis
You were a kid in the 20 teens. Congrats.
Steve Covino
I'm saying, like, you know, you're not allowed to be motivated as an adult.
Rich Davis
I love Kenny Powers.
Steve Covino
Kenny Powers made you realize that. Never give up on your big league dreams. And again, the importance of having a good friend like Stevie.
Rich Davis
I know you think back and you think of Karate Kid as some sort of cheesy 80s movie, right? But I'm here to remind you, based on the popularity and finality of Cobra Kai, that I think it's the sports movie that fired us up the most as kids. And again, that's a generational question. I'm an 80s kid, so that's my answer.
Steve Covino
I think another one.
Rich Davis
Again, add to the list or debate me or that's. Again, there's really no wrong answers.
Steve Covino
Oh, I mean, it's a fun, dumb question, so there can't be a wrong answer. I think you're not adding something to this list because it's not a movie that was on your radar. But even if he didn't play hockey, the Mighty Ducks and Gordon Bombay taking these misfit kids, you could say, well, then the Bear News Bears then too. But to me, Mighty Ducks is on this list as far as that got you all motivated. Oh, look at these little dopey kids all working together. They could win. Mighty Ducks is on this list.
Rich Davis
These movies are great. And you mentioned the Bad News Bears, right? Shout out to Coach Buttermaker, shout out to all the characters from that movie. There was no like montage with a dope ass, you're the best around. There was no cool soundtrack. That compliment a great sports movie has a great montage of kick ass and you know, and songs that you could relate to. That's the only difference there. Like for me when you said Bad News bears, you know, old 70s movie, which I love but it didn't inspire me. It is an inspiring movie that you could turn it all around and be great and all that stuff. But again, it had a soundtrack, it had a song, it had a crane kick. So I'm sticking with my answer. You could feel free to add I never saw the Mighty Ducks. I'm sorry to admit, never watched. I've seen parts of everything because I live in this in this time. But I've never watched it. I was too, a little too old for that. That was like my little sister's movie.
Steve Covino
You know, I mean, never too old for flying. The Flying voice.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Well, and it's not a movie. That's not a bedroom move.
Rich Davis
That sounds like a bedroom move. The flying V that came out in 90 something. I was definitely experimenting with some other flying Vs. Yeah.
Steve Covino

Super producing. Bo is going to give you the herd line news. 8, 7, 7 for the herd. That's the number. 8, 7, 7 for THE herd at Covino and Rich. And please follow our podcast. We're gonna get involved again. We love to be interactive, but last night I was watching the final season of Cobra Kai Never Dies. I haven't watched the final episode yet, but there's a great build up. There's some fun cameos. And it dawned on me, flashing it back on a Friday, that the reason I love this so much is because of the nostalgia. Hands down, when I think about it, hands down, when I think about the movie that fired me up, the sports movie that fired me up the most as a kid, motivated me, got me excited. It's Karate Kid. And it still holds up.
Steve Covino
I don't know if it's in my top five. I love the movie, I love the show, but as far as sports movies, it motivated me. I don't know, how about, like I said, Mighty Ducks, Maybe Rudy, Rudy, Rudy.
Rich Davis
Stealing everybody's answer. These are all great movies.
Steve Covino
Come on, dude.
Rich Davis
But I'm saying, hands down, this is the number one for me.
Steve Covino
Rocky, for just, Just the soundtrack. And Russia and Drago.
Rich Davis
These are great movies, but Rocky was a man, yo. Like you.
Steve Covino
I'm a man.
Rich Davis
You're like, absolutely. Look like a man to you. I say absolutely. No. Were you a man back in 85 when that came out? No. You know, and that's a great movie. Great montages. I get it. Your calls, 877 for the Herd Bill.
Steve Covino
Newport beach, you're on. With Kavino and Rich in for Colin today. What's up, buddy?
Caller
Hey, how are you?
Rich Davis
Good, man. What's up?
Steve Covino
What's your. What's your answer?
Caller
You know, I. I'm in the auto industry. I'm calling you from Newport Beach. First time caller. Great show.
Steve Covino
Thanks, guys. Thanks.
Caller
You know, Days of Thunder really kind of set a spark for me because I. I work closely with the Shelby vehicles and things with power and the Ford versus Ferrari.
Rich Davis
Hey, dude.
Caller
Inspirational all around.
Rich Davis
Where are you from again?
Steve Covino
He's from Newport beach.
Rich Davis
Okay, so again, 1990 Days of Thunder. Tom Cruise. I get it. Everyone's gonna have their. And that's really what it comes down to. What is it for you? Right. I'm a kid from Jersey. Like, car movies, racing was just not my thing. Right. So. But in my heart of hearts, I still think Karate Kid is the universal number one response. It's not a wrong answer, but you can see how, like, that wouldn't resonate with me.
Steve Covino
But he's saying that motivated him in his world.
Rich Davis
Of course.
Steve Covino
So, like, the military always talks about how the movie Top Gun, the recruitment numbers for young, you know, kids out of high school that wanted to fly planes because of that movie. Let's Go to Tampa. Yeah.
Rich Davis
Guess what, Rich. Guess what? Any kid in any part of the country could have signed up for karate lessons.
Steve Covino
That is true.
Rich Davis
Beat up the bully. Who was the bully, by the way? Was it Daniel Simon?
Steve Covino
It's a good question. Who really was Matt, you're on a Tampa. Kavino and Rich in for Colin. What's up, pal?
Caller
Hey, great topic. So not saying this is the greatest movie ever, but one that I related to the. I related to Scott Howard because I was skinny, short kids, I like to play basketball.
Steve Covino
And he talked about a song in the end.
Caller
So it was win in the end. Scott Howard and Teen Wolf.
Rich Davis
Dude, that's so funny.
Steve Covino
Do we all know in the end of Teen Wolf someone junks everyone? Do we know the story of this? Yes. When they scroll through the crowd at the end of the movie, they never caught it. There's a guy that pulls his junk out of his fly and it made the final cut of the movie. So in case you want to junk gaze later, just look at the end of Teen Wolf.
Rich Davis
Is it true that your father walked in and he caught you with that pause on your TV as a truth?
Steve Covino
That is not true. That's not true.
Rich Davis
By the way, it's actually really funny how inaccurate it is when he's taking free throws at the end. Remember, his nemesis is like standing right under the basket. Like, just to look at him and talk about.
Steve Covino
When you take free throws, people stand in front of you.
Rich Davis
That's not how it works. But a very funny movie, which a lot of people still don't realize.
Steve Covino
That's what got you. Not the whole fact that a kid turns into a wolf.
Rich Davis
Well, you know, that's a story about puberty, right? A lot of people don't know that that Teen Wolf is really a story about puberty. Not necessarily. You know, the fact that he was a wolf.
Steve Covino
But Kavino more confused by the continuity of the free throw than the fact that it can turn into a wolf.
Rich Davis
Hold up. What's that guy doing mean? Mugging Scott Howard. Alex P. Keaton. Michael J. Fox. So again, I'm here to say Cobra Kai got me thinking about Karate Kid. Karate Kid. The most inspiring the movie, the sports movie that got me fired up the most as a kid.
Steve Covino
Corey in Alaska. CNR in for Colin. What's up, Corey?
Caller
Hey, what's up?
Steve Covino
Hey, buddy. Yes, you're on, Corey. Go on.
Caller
Oh, sorry. Yeah. So 5, 11, 215. So I got two things. One, Rocky. You want to shoot out or shout out to Rocky? Rocky.
Rich Davis
Tom.
Caller
Tom Colton. Three, Ninjas. Best little martial arts movie ever made.
Steve Covino
Oh, it's Valentine's Day. So what was that little thing? Rocky Loves Emily. Rocky Loves Emily.
Caller
Heck, yeah. The movie that kind of changed my life. I'm going in a different direction. Here is a little big league. I grew up in Minnesota, and this 12 year old took control of a team, and that got me all started in the fantasy football and everything. So, I mean, I know it's not exactly the same, but that thing got me pumped up. I'm like, hey, I could own my own team too.
Steve Covino
That's pretty cool. You know, Kavito's bummed because when his grandfather died, he just got a shoehorn, not a baseball team.
Rich Davis
I really got nothing. I got a pair of his binoculars.
Steve Covino
Oh, your grandma died. You got a tortilla press.
Rich Davis
I had to look this up. Three Ninjas, 1992. So at this point in my life, I'm in junior high, right. So. But I am inspired now to maybe check it out with my kid or my nephew or something.
Steve Covino
Might I suggest Three Ninjas Kick Back the sequel. Let's go to Pa, Pennsylvania. Steve, you're almost covinano on Rich. What's up, buddy?
Rich Davis
How are you?
Steve Covino
What's up, man?
Caller
Hey, man, I got two movies for you. For the football players, I'd say All the Right Moves.
Steve Covino
Okay.
Caller
For the wrestlers, I'd say Vision Quest.
Steve Covino
All right, all right. You know, I'm trying to think back if there's anyone in any category we're missing. And by the way, a lot of.
Rich Davis
A lot of Tom Cruise. That's 1983. All the right Moves. I remember watching that late night on HBO when I was a kid, hoping for a rated R because that's the kind of little kid I was.
Steve Covino
Yeah. You remember the hbo Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo.
Rich Davis
Feature presentation. Come on, R. Come on, come on, boobies.
Steve Covino
Rated R for nudity.
Peter Schrager
Yes.
Steve Covino
Stayed up late just for that. Yeah.
Rich Davis
So I remember watching that back in the day for sure. Good 80s one. And again, whatever type of kid you were, like a little skate kid, I'm sure, like Gleam in the Cube or, you know, it depends what you were into. But for me, like Karate Kid, the story of it just. Again, I thought of that as a kid's version of Rocky, but I don't think of it as a kid's movie. I think that's just a great movie about the relationship between him and Miyagi. I think it's still great today. Listen, but especially as a kid, something.
Steve Covino
That Cobra Kai the series has gone on too long. But you know what? It's still entertaining.
Rich Davis
Oh, it's so stupid.
Steve Covino
I find the most fun part about Cobra Kai on Netflix that you have to check your brain at the door and pretend like karate in the Valley is such a big deal, that kids are dying, kids are fighting. There's a scene in one of the seasons where Daniel LaRusso.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
Lives in a beautiful house here in California, and kids are having a karate fight in his place. And they're throwing each other through windows. Yeah. And the cops are uncalled. Like, that's how it is.
Rich Davis
And then this karate life, it's all about the Sakai Takai, this international karate tournament. And here's the hint I'll give you. Remember I said some fun cameos of people you know personally. It gets national TV coverage, the Sakai Takai.
Steve Covino
You know what's funny? You got to ask yourself, where do you have to check your brain at the door more as far as these shows? Is it the influence of karate in Karate Kid? Is there another example where it's like, you just gotta. Come on. You just gotta check your brain instability for Big Storm?
Rich Davis
I mean, yeah, probably the fact that it's such a big deal. We'll wrap it up with a few more phone calls because we got to talk. Eagles and their parades going on. There's lots going on in the world of sports and football. But again, sports, movies, as a kid, that fired you up the most.
Steve Covino
Let's wrap it up with John in Florida. What's up, John?
Rich Davis
John.
Steve Covino
Damn you, John, you there, buddy?
Rich Davis
Yes.
Steve Covino
Oh, what's up, man? You're on with Kabino and Rich.
Rich Davis
Hey, hey.
Steve Covino
You guys are.
Rich Davis
Come on.
Steve Covino
You guys are forgetting a good one. What do you got?
Rich Davis
Forget all these little kid ones, man. All the right moves. You know, it's funny. You're the second person that just said that. 1983. It's a good one for sure. And I love all those movies. All these movies were great, right? These kids movies growing up. Remember the Titans, Little Giants, Miracle the Rookie. There's so many sports movies that we loved as kids growing up. I'm just saying that this is the number one. When I think about it, you bring.
Steve Covino
Up, Remember the Titans. That's a separate category in conversation. That's sports movies that make you tear up like a little bee. I watch Remember the Titans. That'll get you emotional. I heard Colin, we're filling in for him, talking about how Brian's Song was that for him. You ever watched that back in the day, of course.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
I think he had to school. That'll make you shed one.
Rich Davis
Rookie of the year, Space Jam. There's so many great ones. We grew up with angels in the afield. Rich always talks about.
Steve Covino
So you used to be Mel Clark. Answer this question and we'll move along.
Rich Davis
What is saying the difference between Karate Kid and a Rocky, which is an obvious answer? Rocky. Absolutely. Rocky Balboa. Inspiration.
Steve Covino
Kavino.
Rich Davis
What's a more is that that he was a kid? He was a high school kid.
Steve Covino
What's a more unbelievable premise? I'm going to leave Teen Wolf and Air Bud Golden Retriever out of this.
Rich Davis
Air Bud, your mom's favorite.
Steve Covino
My mom loves that. What's what's more unbelievable that karate becomes that popular in California where it's like the main focus of the Valley or the fact in Mighty Ducks misfit kids go from not knowing how to play hockey to playing for the world championship a year later.
Rich Davis
I'm going to go with that because you downplay the significance and popularity of martial arts. I don't know.
Steve Covino
You think a nerdy guy. Yeah.
Rich Davis
But you act like there's not a scene or an importance to martial arts and karate. I think at every point in every kid's life, there's a few things that I think are universal. Unless you were a total weenie, you had the thoughts that you could be a professional athlete or something, or an astronaut. I don't know. It depends where your head was at. You probably thought magic was cool at one point. You're like, you know what? I'm gonna practice a few magic tricks. And you thought to yourself, I'm gonna do some karate moves. Maybe it was wrestling moves, right?
Steve Covino
Yeah, but it was. It was.
Rich Davis
So for me, it's not that far.
Steve Covino
Off of a thought by watching. I took karate by watching Cobra Kai, though. I do find it funny, though. Just the same way if you watched again Mighty Ducks and it's like, really? The fat Goldberg goalie kid is the best in the world?
Rich Davis
Yeah, that's more unbelievable.
Steve Covino
But then I say to myself, Larus daughter and that weird dude with the mohawk, they're going to beat some of these karate experts. Like, who's that hot chick they brought in who's actually a jiu jitsu expert?
Rich Davis
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah. I know who you're talking about.
Steve Covino
Like.
Rich Davis
Like she was in the final. She's in the final season.
Steve Covino
All right. Hey, thank you for the feedback, Rich in for Colin.
Rich Davis
And by the way, if you want to still chime in or you're listening to the podcast in the future again. Covino and Rich just hit us up on social media at Covino and Rich. Hashtag Covino is right.
Steve Covino
Don't. I would not fuck. You know what?
Rich Davis
Hashtag Karate Kid.
Steve Covino
I'll let you go with that. In for Colin. We're doing it live from the tirerack.com studio and it is time for Bo filling in with the Herdline news.
Rich Davis
No, no, no. Heard on the news. This is the Herd line news.
Caller
How's it going, fellas?
Rich Davis
Good, man.
Steve Covino
What's up, Bo?
Caller
Doing well. Doing well. Happy to be here with you guys. Today we're going to have stories trickle in as the Philadelphia Eagles, the world champions, make their way through the streets of Philadelphia. We're going to start here though, with a big game last night as Juju Watkins of USC had 38 points, 11 rebounds, eight blocks and five assists in their 7160 win over the number one UCLA Bruins.
Steve Covino
Damn.
Rich Davis
Wait, what was the score again?
Steve Covino
71, 71 to 60.
Rich Davis
Oh, okay.
Caller
Up and down.
Rich Davis
Yo, can I tell you something? Not to compare high school sports to this, but my daughter's a cheerleader here in the Valley here in Los Angeles, right? So she's living that teenage life.
Steve Covino
I'm surprised she's not into karate when.
Rich Davis
When, of course, she's not at all. Valley tournaments.
Steve Covino
Yep.
Rich Davis
Cheering for them, dude. The game the other day at her high school was 83 4. Her team lost 83 4. I was like, do these kids even try? Are you cheering hard?
Steve Covino
Told me your. Your daughter's high school is academically focused, but I don't even know who play, who plays on the team.
Rich Davis
Talk about embarrassing. I'm like, you're not cheering good, I guess. I don't know.
Caller
Were those four or three free throws or were those just two made baskets?
Rich Davis
They're embarrassing. That's what it is. I don't know. I don't know how it happened, but 83 to 4.
Steve Covino
By the way, Juju Watkins, she's add to the list of women basketball players that are becoming more household names. So great for her.
Caller
Absolutely. Colorado wide receiver, defensive back, however you want to call it. Heisman winner Travis Hunter, he's going to attend the NFL combine next month. Listed as a defensive back. I saw this for his workouts.
Steve Covino
It's interesting, right? Because we saw Shohei Ohtani pitch and bat last year. Bo, your Dodgers didn't seem to need him on the pitching side of things. And you wonder, even though he could do it, do you think whatever team picks Travis Hunter is going to have him play both sides of the ball.
Caller
He's going to step in day one as like an elite defensive lockdown defensive back. I thought he would go as a wide receiver just because that's where the money is. But if he's smart, he'll play DB and step in for a wide receiver every once in a while.
Rich Davis
Let him do it as Rob Parker. It's great for the NFL.
Caller
He's a great wide receiver, but he's an insanely good defensive back. So I. I think he's doing the right thing here for his career long term.
Steve Covino
You could pull him in for a scheme here, there. I know it's, you know, an optimistic opposite sides of the ball, but a couple years ago, you know, before he didn't want to be on my 49ers anymore, Deebo Samuel was like part wide receiver, part running back more than I've ever seen a player. Split position, offensive.
Caller
Really made that team work when you think about it in that prime.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
Remember our old boss, Stevie Cohen? Remember what he used to say? Think of the story, you know, think of the storyline here and how great that would be. We're talking about inspiring for kids. Inspiring for kids. They've never seen anything like that before. You know, they've never seen players go two way this way. I think it'd be great for the NFL. I think it'd be great to let him try it here and there. You know, I wouldn't stop him from doing it.
Caller
No. Yeah. Last one here. Long brewing story kind of from Super Bowl Sunday. I don't know if you guys saw Chauncey Gardner Johnson and Travis Kelce had a bit of a on field tiff. And then Swifties have Now review Bombed CJ's mom's restaurant wrong. Yeah, you know, really weird because he. He posted something on Instagram about Taylor Swift. Well, CJ's attire today @ the super bowl parade. You guys are gonna have to Google it and look it up. He's wearing a hoodie. That is a direct shot at Taylor Swift and her fans. And when you know who he is as a player and a person, you're not gonna be surprised when you do see it. I can't really say it on the air, but yeah, he's. He is continuing to stoke the.
Rich Davis
The flames here right now as we.
Steve Covino
Man, he's trying to upset a bunch of little white girls, isn't he?
Caller
Yeah, he is.
Rich Davis
Purple licks my. Oh, can't read it. It's black down. All right.
Steve Covino
Hey, you know, thank you, Bo. That's your hardline news. All right, Kavino and Rich in for Colin on the Herd now coming up, there's a lot to get to, Kavino. Baseball right around the corner. We're talking football ends. Where's your focus? Of course, we go NBA, we go baseball. And the off season in the NFL just as exciting. So we're going to talk some Aaron Rodgers later. There's a Jason Kelsey story that I find hilarious. It has to do with Valentine's Day.
Rich Davis
Happy Valentine's, puppy.
Steve Covino
And we will talk a little baseball next because I feel like a guy on your team, the Yankees, Devin Williams is being cramped like none other. We'll get to that next. Doing it live from the Tyrack.com studio. Covino and Rich in for Colin Friday on the Hurricane. Be sure to catch live editions of.

Kavita on Rich in for Colin on the herd. Happy Valentine's Day. And by the way, happy three day weekend. I just realized that thank you to Abe Lincoln and his top hat and beard and George Washington and.
Rich Davis
What do you mean? He just thought that why you think I'm wearing this top hat today?
Steve Covino
I'm sorry.
Rich Davis
Celebrating the weekend and shout out to.
Steve Covino
All 45 of our presidents in U.S. history.
Rich Davis
Really? You're shouting them out like they're listening?
Steve Covino
Yeah, I'm shouting out, yo, what's up, Chester A. Arthur.
Rich Davis
If you want a real shout out, hit us up at Covino and Rich.
Steve Covino
Yo, President Taft.
Rich Davis
And by the way, Ryan's right, only 44 of them, man. Say it again.
Steve Covino
45.
Rich Davis
40. 45, 45.
Steve Covino
Oh, Ryan doesn't acknowledge one. Yeah, that's sorry.
Rich Davis
So he cut one out. So anyway, thank you guys for hanging out with us, Covino and Rich, reminding you that Cobra K never dies. And Happy Valentine's, puppy.
Steve Covino
Yeah, think about it, camino. There's been 40. This is the 47th president, President Trump, but there's been 45 men. So you know what happened with Trump is what happened with Billy Martin in the 80s for the Yankees, like got fired, came back, did it again, kind of like. So like the Yankees with Lou Piniella and Billy Martin, our whole childhood.
Rich Davis
Speaking of the Yankees again, let's get involved. Fox Sports Radio Nation. Covino and Rich in for calling on the herd. 8, 7, 7 for the herd. That's the number. 8, 7, 7 for THE herd at Covino and Rich. At Steve Cavino. At Rich Davis. Now I, Steve Covino. El hombre Masuampo. Yes, Dr. Love. Can I steal Mike's nickname? Mike, who runs this place?
Steve Covino
Who?
Rich Davis
Dr. Love? Mike. So as the resident Yankees fan, I'm a Yankees fan. Rich as a Mets guy, I gotta tell you, I think change starts with one person. I've always been the guy that was okay with the Yankees. Pinstripe pride, legendary franchise, no name on the back. Of course I like tradition, but as you've said, sometimes tradition is making the same mistake over and over again.
Steve Covino
Sometimes you force that eye rolly tradition where Yankee fans say things like, they gotta earn their pinstripes, like, oh God, could I roll my eyes more? And just something as simple as the Yankees don't have a city Connect jersey because they don't need an alternate jersey.
Rich Davis
The pinstripes, that did rub me the wrong way a little bit. I want to be rubbed the right way on this Valentine's Day, like Johnny Gill. And when they said no to the Connect jerseys, I was like, that's kind of lame. Like, can we have a little fun? It's baseball, it's a game. It's supposed to be kind of fun. But there is a sense of professionalism. I think you need to have in sports and in life, not everything's a free for all.
Steve Covino
Yeah, but you're the first person to say, you know, here's a bunch of dudes in suit and ties talking about sports. Meanwhile, the fans are wearing beer helmets, jerseys and hoodies. And it's sports, dude. At the end of the day, it's sports. So when the Yankees are a little too traditional, I think we live in a day and age now where it's going to start to backfire. And exhibit A is your dude.
Rich Davis
Yes, Devin Williams. If change starts with one guy, believe it or not, I think it's this guy. It wasn't Giambino who had to cut his mullet. It wasn't Johnny Damon who had a shave his caveman beard. It's this guy because it's 20, 25. It's a different time, it's a different place, and there's a different set of players out there. I think for you to have this shaving rule, you have to shave your face. This grooming rule that's been around forever with the Yankees since George Steinbrenner is so outdated at this particular point. Let's say you draft this young hotshot Dominican kid and he has a sweet shape up, but he's neatly groomed, but he's really shaped up and he has.
Steve Covino
A cool look about it.
Rich Davis
No, no, no, shave it.
Steve Covino
You're on the Yankees now.
Rich Davis
How lame slick fielding shaped up sweet faded Dominican kid that he has to shave his precision beard because it's a stupid rule. And that's kind of what's going on with Devin Williams here. So Devin Williams, they said, hey, look, you're a Yankee now, but you gotta shave that beard. And he has a good lengthy beard. And they said, well, when was the last time you shaved him? And he's like, oh, man, I haven't shaved in it forever. He shows up pitchers and catchers this week fully shaved and he looks like a little baby boy.
Steve Covino
He looks like the alien from Mac and me.
Rich Davis
He looks like a little baby cherub on Valentine's Day. And you're like, what is that? That's not the intimidation factor that you want closing out the game for the New York Yankees.
Steve Covino
Yo, Devin Williams went from looking like a badass slick closer to a little baby boy. Let me ask you, sexy Ryan, run the board today. When was the last time you shaved your beard? You're rocking the facial hair.
Rich Davis
I was in my 20s. One of my first big time jobs.
Steve Covino
Out of college was at Enterprise Rent a Car and you can't have facial hair to rent a car.
Rich Davis
I get it.
Steve Covino
Makes total sense. So you haven't shaved in easily a decade? Oh, easily, yeah. Bo producing today, rocking facial hair. When was the last time you clean shaved with a razor?
Caller
Back when I worked with the Dodgers, I worked at Dodger Stadium. You can't have facial hair though. So it was like 10 years ago.
Steve Covino
I can't tell you. The last time I took a razor to my face was easily a decade. And I feel like Covino, you dabbled a little bit a couple years ago. But most men nowadays, most grown ass men have some type of stubble, beard, goatee, mustache. I think this Yankees rule is just unnecessary. I don't think it has anything to do with professionalism.
Rich Davis
Here's why I think Devin Williams is the key here. Again, he's not the first guy that was forced to shave. Right. But he's a closer and the closer position comes with that intimidation factor. I said before and he has stated that he loses confidence without the facial hair. And that may sound petty and lame and silly, but think about it. If you're not feeling your best and most confident, that's the guy you want out there. And when you're investing $8.6 million in a player a year to play at his best and most confident and is most intimidating, why would you want to force this guy to shave? So I do believe that there's a compromise. I do believe that people need to speak up and make this happen. The compromise is, hey man, you just can't look like a hobo out there. You can't look like the 04 Red Sox. 04 Red Sox. Kevin Millar and his hobo beard.
Steve Covino
But I think there's something to be said. There's something to be said about feeling confident because I know this guy's listening right now being like really Covino, really rich. Like you think the beard and facial hair matters. But you know what if I asked you right now, you're a single guy, you want to go out on a date, you finally got that girl to hang out with you, that you're benign up.
Rich Davis
You want to feel your best when.
Steve Covino
You go to work, when you're on a date, when you're anywhere, don't you want to feel your coolest, your best?
Rich Davis
And when you see, and as an opposing player, when you see Devin Williams on the mound without that beard, he lost like three inches of his face. He looks so like non intimidating. I think that gives an edge to the batter. So I feel like it's really counterproductive for the Yankees to keep implementing this silly rule at this stage of life, stage of the game. For years I was like, nah man, rules are rules. You live by it. Now I believe we're at a compromise.
Steve Covino
Who is the Yankee? Yeah, that is a free agent now. Hasn't signed anywhere yet, but he commented about how he's excited to be himself again.
Rich Davis
Oh, Alex Verdugo.
Steve Covino
Verdugo said, oh, sweet. Now I could grow facial hair again. I could, you know, wear jewelry. It's, it's a big deal. So we'll take your feedback next right here. CNR in for Colin I'm Peter Schrager.

The hosts engage in a lively debate about which sports movie had a more profound impact during their youth. Steve counters by highlighting the motivational power of the Rocky series, particularly Rocky IV, emphasizing its powerful soundtrack and inspirational narrative.

Rich criticizes the team's insistence on a clean-shaven appearance, arguing that it undermines Williams' confidence and intimidation factor on the mound.
