You're listening to Fox Sports Rad. It's the Herd here, Fox Sports Radio. Levar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for Colin. You can hear us weekday morning, 6:00am Eastern Time, 3:00 clock Pacific here on many of these Fox Sports Radio affiliates, normally alongside Brady Quinn. Brady Quinn is not with us here. So when lavar and I fill in and it's just him and I doing the show, we like to refer to ourselves as Black and Drac.
Jonas Knox
Don't get nervous. I ain't don't get nervous.
Colin Cowherd
It's because I don't get afraid. It's because I'm pale and I'm dark. So welcome in to the debut edition of Black and Drac. Here in for Colin and company on the Herd. What up, Sticks?
Jonas Knox
Good morning. Oh, well, good afternoon. Good, good noon to some people.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's very interesting.
Jonas Knox
Good morning to you. Good morning to everyone out here.
Colin Cowherd
It is very interesting seeing the light of day, seeing actual human beings walking by the studio, having energy running through.
Jonas Knox
Your body because you're fully awake.
Colin Cowherd
I don't even need this coffee.
Jonas Knox
It's just a prop, I think for certain.
Colin Cowherd
Damn.
Jonas Knox
I've already had two cups before I left the house and sleep.
Colin Cowherd
So first off, want to say Congratulations. Clayton Kershaw, 3,000 strikeouts. It was quite the scene at Dodger Stadium. Yeah, no kidding. A lot of, lot of throwing lots of scenes. Last night at Dodger Stadium. Clayton Kershaw gets strikeout 3000 against the White Sox. The Dodgers were trailing. He did not look great. Probably. Probably the worst he's looked since he's come back from the injury and the rehab and all that. But nonetheless, it was about the moment in the career of Clayton Kershaw. He gets strikeout number 3,000. And then they go on to walk it off in the ninth because Freddie Freeman does it again. So it was quite the scene there for the LA Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Dodger fans were thrilled. Now, from one fan base and one organization that is legitimate championship contenders and defending world champions to another team in town that is not. Oh, geez, gentleman, the Los Angeles Lakers.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, take your pick. Hey, talk about different balls in the air. Which one you want to catch bad? There's still some up in the air. You chose to catch the Lakers.
Colin Cowherd
You want to talk about a wild turn of events. It's like the movie when Steven Seagal was in a coma and he wakes up after eight years and he's like, what the hell happened? How did everything change? I woke up this morning and all of a sudden I like, rub my eyes and I'm looking around going, oh, so deandre Ayton's the linchpin to a championship contender. Okay, I, I had no idea. This is news to me.
Jonas Knox
Is it?
Colin Cowherd
But apparently he is.
Jonas Knox
I ain't going to lie. I'm, I'm. I'm in on that.
Colin Cowherd
Deandre Ayton.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, I'm in on that.
Colin Cowherd
Which of the 40 games, or better yet, which of the 42 games he missed last year was your favorite? Is that an. I kind of like the. This whole thing is bananas. Bang, bang. It is bananas.
Jonas Knox
But apparently that stuff is like, you can't measure the amount of games missed anymore in the NBA. That, that the, the idea of a disgruntled player, unhappy organization, the politics that play a part in missing games as a pro NBA player is very real. So I don't look at the amount of games that he missed last year and say he can't be the guy that, that we've seen him be when he was in, in Phoenix. I say, I look at a guy that was in a situation that didn't work out for him and didn't work out for the organization, and now he's going somewhere else. And that's probably why you didn't see a lot of him this past season.
Colin Cowherd
The problem I have with this is that this is the third stop now for deandre Ayton. He was in Phoenix, he goes to Portland now he's with the Lakers.
Jonas Knox
And a lot of people don't like Port Portland, though.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, I listen.
Jonas Knox
You know what I mean? Like, I'm not going to hold Portland against, sorry, Portland, but I'm just not going to hold Portland against Aiden. I'm not.
Colin Cowherd
Now, the reason why I would say that there should be cause for concern is that there was reported issues in Phoenix. You know, work ethic, tardiness, all the things that come along with it. Attitude.
Jonas Knox
Who you talking about? Luca? Are you talking about DeAndre?
Colin Cowherd
I'm talking about DeAndre.
Jonas Knox
Oh, okay.
Colin Cowherd
Luca's already been fat shamed enough. We're not going to go in that direction.
Jonas Knox
I mean, I was just making sure that we understood that maybe the Lakers are feeling like they're well versed in those type of guys.
Colin Cowherd
Nico Harrison was like Joe Clark. Joe Clark in the movie talking to that kid who's overweight. He saw some slovenly sloppy boy.
Jonas Knox
Go ahead and jump.
Colin Cowherd
Nico Haron, you smoke crack, don't you? Nico Harrison, fat ass, go and jump. Challenging Luca to jump off the building. You slop sloppy boy.
Jonas Knox
You want to jump now? No, I want to play for the Lakers.
Colin Cowherd
I'm sorry?
Jonas Knox
I want to play for the Lakers. I don't want to do it anymore. I want to die.
Colin Cowherd
So Nico Harrison was busy fat shaming Luka. Deandre Ayton was in Portland.
Jonas Knox
And according to he's not fat. He just don't work hard, I guess. You smoke crack, don't you?
Colin Cowherd
Thank you. That was Nico Harrison live on the. On the top of a building, ready to throw Luke up.
Jonas Knox
That is not how Luka's losing the weight, people. So it's not what we're insinuating.
Colin Cowherd
So deandre Ayton, according to an article from the New York Times that he. There were veterans were kind of fed up with him. He would show up late, he would miss team planes or be tardy to team planes. Just like the. Just your typical. Not really all that invested. Some people kind of viewed him as a bit of a clown there. And it did not work and he was bought out. And so now he's a member of the LA Lakers. Now I would say this, it's an upgrade. It is an upgrade at the center position, but it's an upgrade much like sushi at a liquor store when you're hungry, it's food. I just don't know if that's the kind of food you want or if that's the kind of food that you would go, that's exactly what's going to get me through the rest of my day. I'm just skeptical. I still look at this team and I go, they are at best fourth, fifth in the conference. And considering the upgrade Houston made, what OKC just did, you've got Denver coming back, Minnesota you think will take the next step. I just, I don't know how this does anything different for the Lakers next year.
Jonas Knox
I think it does. If the leadership quality is there for deandre Aiden and the scenarios that you are mentioning. I don't, I don't feel as though I can't get right because those are can't get right actions. If you feel as though coming into the scenario, you have a good hold of understanding through, you know, your conversations with, with Aiden that those are things you can manage. I honestly believe as a player, when DeAndre Ayden is playing the game, he can be one of the more elite bigs in the game. And if you were to ask anybody who knows basketball and has paid attention to the Lakers, they've needed a big man. They needed a legitimate big man. And as we continue down this road of, of Preparing for post LeBron James era in LA, I think this is a good move. Now let me add this to it. Cause I got this from my guy, Cuffs, the legend by the way. Some dude show what up Cuffs. He comes on with us on Saturdays when we do up on game what up on and he did call deandre Aiden going to the Lakers, by the way, before it happened in previous shows. And, and this is the latest that he's come up with. And I think that this is pretty spot on and on par for what could possibly take place with everybody getting what they want. I think the Lakers want to move on from LeBron James. I think LeBron James is okay with moving on from the Lakers if it serves his purpose, which is one, he's trying to get another championship or two, to try to catch up with MJ and Kobe, and three, to make sure that his son's career isn't cut short. What would be the best solution to that? Well, let's, let's talk about it. If you put all of the elements together and you say, okay, what makes this work for LeBron James in this scenario, it would be most likely to go to a organization that still would. Would approve of having him, would embrace having him, would support having him, which would lead to possibly him being able to package that up with bringing his son with him. There's a possibility of that. Unless within the buyout or, or the leaving of la, they would make sure they take care of Bronny James in the event that he were to leave here. Those two elements, right. But it would also be for him to go to a place where he A has a chance to win the championship, B, be with somebody that he's familiar with. If the New York Knicks hire Brown, right, if they hire Mike Brown, there is a relationship of respect and admiration between LeBron James and Mike Brown. They have history together. They go Back to when LeBron James first time in Cleveland, he was with them, they had a ton of great success. Mike Brown is a very well respected coach, if he were indeed. And in fact the coach that ended up being named the head coach of The New York Knickerbockers. Is there a possibility, as close as that New York Knicks team is to competing for an NBA title, would that be the move? Mike Brown falls into place. Boom. First domino falls down. Is LeBron James the next domino in that, in that series of dominoes to fall, does he end up in New York? Great market. He goes from one major media market to the other major. The, the two bohemias. He goes to the other one. And we know that LeBron James has made a career of going to organizations that are close to winning championships or have already won one. This Knicks team is close to a championship. It would be a familiar person in Brown. He would be able to integrate in and, and get in there in a easy manner, a less stressful manner and make a difference for a team that was probably a LeBron James away from being able to make it at least to the championship round?
Colin Cowherd
Well, it gets him closer for sure because the Eastern Conference is wide open.
Jonas Knox
Well, there you go.
Colin Cowherd
It's wide open because of all the injuries. And look, I've said it before on Fox Sports Radio, I believe Cleveland's in an advantageous spot because for a team that's run into injury, bad luck the past couple of years, everybody else ran into it this year, and maybe Cleveland just by default becomes the healthiest team. And if Mike Brown does, you know, is finalized, and that's the reports we're hearing, that he's going to be the coach of the Knicks. Yeah. If you're LeBron and this is all about you getting to another NBA Finals to have another shot, the easier path would be the east by far, because in the, the Western Conference it ain't happening right now.
Jonas Knox
Doesn't that bring you back to the conversation? We, it was just out there. Everybody was throwing this out there, ring chasing, ring chasing culture, ring chasing culture. As if LeBron James was the creator of ring chasing culture. He's not, by the way. I don't think people should try to downgrade him that way. But ring chasing culture, if LeBron James were to leave and to go to a team like the New York Knicks, it's that. Does this, does this now begin to be the idea of you couldn't get it done in Cleveland so you had to go to Miami. You eventually got it done in Miami and then you go back and then you get it in Cleveland, then you can't get it done in Cleveland anymore. So now you go and build a super team and you are able to get a bubble, a bubble championship in la. La. Seems to have run its course. Now. If you go to New York looking at what they got in, Brunson looking at what they got in, if they're going to keep Towns, which you would assume that they're going to keep Carl Anthony Towns, you go join a team that actually is, is set and, and built to make a run for the championship. What does this do to LeBron James legacy? Because in, in all, in all due respect, LeBron James has had to go chase the rings elsewhere. It has never been bring the rings to him. And when you look at Kobe, they brought the rings to Kobe. When you look at mj, they brought the rings to mj. They didn't go somewhere else to go get it done with somebody else's main players and you integrated and maybe became the main player. They didn't do that with the. Steph Curry didn't do that. The rings have come to where they are. LeBron James is, is widely considered arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, and yet maybe be the may be the only one in the category of having to go chase the rings elsewhere.
Colin Cowherd
First, I, I think it's pretty disrespectful to list off the accomplishments of LeBron James and not include the in season title.
Jonas Knox
Oh, that's my bet.
Colin Cowherd
That's rude.
Jonas Knox
My bad. And enter that champions of the, the in season tournament.
Colin Cowherd
Now, I've heard from people that the ring he got in the bubble wasn't actually a ring, it was a gold covet mask. Oh, again, I don't know. And I'm not trying to sped. I mean, yeah, I'm not trying to spread any sort of negativity out there, but I just think he is what he is at this point. And what if. I don't think that there's anything that he could do to either jump above Jordan or move off anybody else's list. Like you feel about LeBron, how you feel about him. And if this is all about I want to go chase another championship, it's going to come down to him looking at the landscape of the Western Conference and trying to figure out is that the best way to do it. Me, personally, I don't think it is. I think there's way too many obstacles in the way and way too many better teams. I think if he's going to do it, it's going to be out East. I just don't know. Depending on what they're going to ask in return. If the Knicks look at that and go, is it really worth one year potentially of LeBron and everything that comes along with it.
Jonas Knox
He took his option. He took his option and he's getting older. What exactly are you going to ask for in trying to get a hold of LeBron James? And if that value is so high that it is a. A scoff at it and, and turn and walk away from it, then why are you getting rid of them? If his value to you is still that high, why are you getting rid of them?
Colin Cowherd
Look, I think if you're the Lakers and you're planning on moving on with them, moving on from him after a year, just do it now.
Jonas Knox
Do it now. Yeah, like I make it and make it doable.
Colin Cowherd
I, I'm with you.
Jonas Knox
Don't, don't try, don't try to rob the whole hen house. If you know your intentions are to get him out of there, if you want to get him out, then make it a doable situation. Make it a doable deal. And for what it's worth, if you felt like you got duped by bringing in his child, you could get a two for one or yo daddy, yo daddy did this. Now you got to go right along with him. Which, by the way, how do you handle that? Like if, if Bronnie James has to go because his daddy left, how will the media handle that? That's a whole nother conversation in itself. God.
Colin Cowherd
What do you. You would find out a lot about LeBron James's reputation in town. If they traded him and then immediately after trading him, they made Bronnie the custodian. Like that would be. You'd find a hell of a lot about.
Jonas Knox
Wasn't looking for that plot twist, but.
Colin Cowherd
That was actually all of a sudden they're like, hey, here's. Here's a mop and a bucket.
Jonas Knox
He could say he of the LA Lakers. I mean, I mean, all the perks if he gets to sit on the bench, but he's cleaning toilets and cleaning floors during the week, making sure there's no dust on the floor for practice. He's still considered to be an employee of the LA Lakers.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's. The whole thing is a bit bizarre, but nonetheless, it is the Herd here on fox Sports Radio, LaVar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for Colin as we take you all the way up until 3 o' clock Eastern time, noon Pacific. Up next here on the Herd, though, there's one team in the NFL that feels great about everything going into next year, but maybe they shouldn't find out why. Right here on fsr. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon. Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the iHeartRadio app hi, this is Jay. I'm the producer of the Paulie and Tony Fusco Show. Usually in these promos they ask you to listen to the show. I'm here to ask you please don't listen to the show. It's the Herd Fox Sports Radio, Levar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for Colin coming up here in about 20 minutes from now in another edition of the Herdline News. We had history in the world of sports last night. We will tell you why, who it involved and it nearly got a little bit interesting. That'll be yours Here again about 20 minutes from now here on Fox Sports Radio. So Andrew Filiponi, who's a radio host in Pittsburgh, he recently pointed out the Steelers being underdogs in 11 of 17 games this upcoming season. So here are the games because it's a shorter list and it won't be won't take as long. Here are the games that they are favorite in Week 1 at the Jets, Week 2 versus the Seahawks, Week 6 versus the Browns, Week 9 versus the Colts, Week 15 versus the Dolphins and Week 17 at the Browns. Sidebar thank you to the Cleveland Browns for being in the same division as the Steelers because you will guarantee that they won't finish last. But the Steelers being going into the season with all this hoopla and all this discussion and when you start to take a look back and we've talked about it on our show, Two Pros and a Cup of Joe, when you start to take a look back and you look at what the NFL presented them from a schedule standpoint, they're up against it this year. Like they do not have an easy schedule. It is difficult, which is why the win total had been set at eight and a half for Pittsburgh. And if you're an eight or a nine win team in the afc, you're probably not going to make the playoffs in that conference. So for all the discussion about all the pieces they've added, it still feels like Pittsburgh's up against it going into next year based on the schedule.
Jonas Knox
Listen, I've made my my points on this known as as this has continued to unfold. They have been active this offseason and they have spent money. But people make the point of saying that Pittsburgh spends their money on defense and that's true. It's proven through the information that that is set forth and put out there. But they do look to be trying to improve their offense. Now I don't know that I'm a believer in their back to back committee that's in their running backs room right now. But maybe it works out for them based on what they see in terms of their quarterback position. It's a, it's obviously a tremendous risk. It's a big move to bring in Aaron Rodgers and it's a probably a short lived move. But what does that short lived acquisition, what are the results of that? So you guys are, you know, the, the bet the betters out there or the prognosticators embedding are basically saying that Aaron, Aaron Rodgers is washed, that that is Basically, in essence, what they're saying, damn. I mean, what, what, what else does that insinuate? What does that insinuate?
Colin Cowherd
I just love that term. Washed.
Jonas Knox
Washed, cleaned. In a mother. Lover. So. So my whole thing is what can Pittsburgh do? Pittsburgh. And, and this creates a interesting conversation, Jonas, because I want to throw it out at you and see how you feel about it and, and try to make some sense of it. They have a pretty decent defense. Their defense is not bad. If they were to lose TJ Watt, we've had the conversation. I don't think it can happen. Shouldn't be a conversation, but with some of the recent things I've heard swirling around, rumor wise, it's worth the conversation. If you were to get rid of T.J. watt because you felt as though giving him a long term contract doesn't serve the, the Pittsburgh Steelers in a way where one, you're going to get the amount of, of production that you want for the amount of time that you want it for, and two, it may make it difficult to trade him if you wait and give him a new contract and try to trade them under the, the new contract that he has. If right now you feel like this is the best time to unload T.J. watt because it's that year early, before it's a year too late type of approach, then what would you do to justify that trade? You would have to bring in someone who makes your team unequivocally better and, and almost justifies it. One, I do not believe you can bring in a swap out. It can't be a defender. It just can't. You cannot get rid of TJ Watt and bring in another defender and hope that that's going to work out. There's no one out there that exists and you can't do it. But what if you were to do it on the offensive side of the ball and you did a trade, you orchestrated a trade with, say, rumor has it, with the Washington Commanders. With the Washington Commanders, you get a couple nice draft picks that would give you the ability to start to build towards the future. Because now you're building draft stock and draft capital. But then you bring in Terry McLaurin. If you add Terry McLaurin to now the ad of John New, now the addition of DK Metcalf, and you have Terry McLaurin on, on that offensive side of the ball, I would say all that's left is do you have a running back and can your offensive line hold up? If your offensive line, if you're confident that your offensive line can hold up and you get someone that can produce at a, a, a, an above average level. They don't have to be a superstar, even if it's by committee. Do you have a backfield that is conducive to giving you the hard yards that Pittsburgh has always needed to have to win in the AFC North? Does that make it a more legitimized move forward? Does that actually solidify an off season that where you say the Steelers are always defensively heavy? You just added Jalen Ramsey. If you were to lose TJ Watt, they are going to have guys. It has happened before when, when Kevin Green and Greg Lloyd left, people thought that it was going to be hard to replace them. They replaced them when Joey Porter and Jason Gilden left, as hard as it may seem and sound, they were replaced. When these guys have left, when Chad Brown and, and, and James Harrison have left, they have been replaced. Do you look at it from the, the historical standpoint of who you've replaced and the success you've had at that very position that TJ Watt is at? And do you make a move that says, we'll put a younger guy in here, he's not a well known guy. It's probably the safer move. Even though you're going to get spanked by the media, you're going to get spanked by the fan base. But is it a smart, legitimate, prudent move to unload TJ Watt now before it's a year too late? Add a guy, a weapon in Terry McLaurin, which would be an amazing addition to that offense. In fact, you would have no excuses if you're Aaron Rodgers or an offensive coordinator on how to distribute the ball. You got John New, you got Friar moved. You got, you got a double tight end set. You have so many, so many groupings that you could go out there in situational football and be in favor, like in, in a very, very favorable situation. Does this make sense to you to, to take that approach?
Colin Cowherd
I'm not doing it because, and look, we've talked about this before.
Jonas Knox
I ain't mad at it.
Colin Cowherd
I think getting, I think not getting a deal done with TJ Watt and moving on from him undoes all the good you did this off season. And we made this point on our show. If you were to get rid of T.J. watt, doesn't that, Isn't that counter to everything that you've been trying to do this off season where.
Jonas Knox
Not if you bring in a guy that makes Aaron Rodgers that much more dangerous? I'm Sorry, I just got to say it. And as a defender, as a former defensive player, it pains me to have to say it. It really does. But if I can improve and upgrade my offense to that capacity, that's this, that. That is the Washington commander's number one receiver. That's their number one target. If you were to bring in another one with DK Metcalf, who is a one, which, by the way, I made the point. I made the discussion point, and I stand on it. It's a hill. I'm gonna put my 10 toes down and stand on it. I don't think that DK Metcalf was a upgrade from George Pickens. I do not. I think that they have the same type of character traits. I think that they could potentially. He could potentially be an issue the same exact way Pickens was an issue. And I don't. I didn't feel as though I felt like, that's a swapper. That's a one offer. Like, that's. It's a swap. It's a push. You didn't get better, but you didn't get worse. You add Terry McLaurin, who is a known character guy, high character guy, high achievement guy understands the game, good team guy. And oh, by the way, he's an Ohio Stater, so he understands the area. There's the connection with the quarterback that just got drafted from Ohio State, I don't think that it would be a bad move. I think it's a justifiable move. If you're upgrading your offense, even if it was as significant a downgrade by letting T.J. watt go in the long run, you may look at him be like, damn, TJ Watt didn't have the greatest of years that next year, dang, he never really got back to where he was supposed to get to. Maybe Distillers pulled the trigger at the right time. It could possibly work in their favor, especially if you come out and your offense is cooking in the AFC North.
Colin Cowherd
Look, I love Terry McLaurin. I think he's one of the more underrated players in the league. I just the to sacrifice what you would lose on defense with T.J. watt to add Terry McLaren. I don't think it's worth it, especially if Rogers is only going to be here for a year. Do you really want to part with a corner again?
Jonas Knox
You've always. You're always going to be faced with those hard decisions. And. And our guy, Bill Belichick was one of the best and greatest at doing it. Getting rid of a guy that you was a beloved guy, was a part of the fabric and. And of, you know, the. The makeup of what the community represented. TJ Watt has done a fine job of building that typ of, you know, goodwill. He's banked a lot of goodwill, but that's still. It's still the business of football. It's still the business of pro sport. And the business of pro sport says, put more points on the board. We want to have a defense that can keep points off of the board so that we can put more up. But the name of the game, the rule changes. Everything is geared towards making sure that the game is a more offensively driven and stimulated game. And if I have to lose a major, major key in a piece to our team on the defensive side of the ball, I at least want to do it knowing that I improved and I upgraded our ability to be able to score touchdowns. And Terry McLaurin, with this group of guys that they brought in, I think they're in. In a really, really advantageous position if they were to make that type of a move.
Colin Cowherd
So, as we mentioned, their underdogs in 11 of 17 games are the Pittsburgh Steelers going into next year.
Jonas Knox
Does Terry McLaurin coming in and losing T.J. watt, does that take that up or take it down?
Colin Cowherd
I. I would say that it takes it up. I'll take. I want T.J. watt.
Jonas Knox
It takes. Wait, wait, wait. If. If you were to lose, TJ Watt takes it up, as in you're going to lose more games.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
Oh, no.
Colin Cowherd
If I were to take Terry McLaren over T.J. watt. Yeah. You're gonna lose more games.
Jonas Knox
You're gonna lose more games. Well, then you don't do it.
Colin Cowherd
If.
Jonas Knox
If you're the Pittsburgh Steelers and you're looking at it from that perspective, then you don't do it.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I just. I. Look, I. If I'm Pittsburgh, I. And I know that, you know what the odds are going into the season, but the reality is the NFL, there's injuries, there's, you know, a couple of misplays here or there and teams that you expect to be good. It's why there's so much turnover in the postseason, for the most part, in the NFL, more so than other sports, because a couple of games here or there, like, it's a fine line between being 7 and 10 and 10 and 7, like, it's a fine line. There's a couple of moments here, there that could be make or break. So if you're Pittsburgh, you probably look at this and go, yeah, so we're Only favored in six games going into this season. If we're able to maintain and keep TJ Watt and get him done and everybody.
Jonas Knox
Which is not a glowing endorsement of T.J. watt.
Colin Cowherd
But. But if you're Pittsburgh and you go, at least I would. I would feel better about my chances going into next year with TJ Watt as opposed to no TJ Watt, add Terry McLaurin. I would feel better.
Jonas Knox
I think you're looking at it. It. You're looking at it from a player to player perspective. I think you got to pull yourself out of looking at it. From the Terry McLaurin to T.J. watt perspective, it would be better to say T.J. watt and Aaron Rodgers, look at it from that perspective. It's the T.J. watt versus Aaron Rodgers. Because if you're adding Terry McLaurin, that means you're giving another weapon to the person that you believe can come in and win you more games. Right now if they're being projected. Because I just said don't do it. If you think you're gonna only win 10, you're gonna win less games. If you. But if. If you're projecting us to only win six games, why not take a chance. If we're only going to be 6 games good with. With TJ Watt, why not take a chance on. We have Aaron Rodgers at least for one season. If I have Aaron Rodgers and. And basically what they're saying is they're putting their money down, all their money at the center of the table, saying that we're going to get this one good year with Aaron Rodgers and you can add another weapon of that caliber to his offense. I don't care who it is on that defensive side of the ball. If that gets a trade done where we can add that type of weapon to our offense. Let's go.
Colin Cowherd
Does it hurt your heart as a Pittsburgh guy and a defensive guy to be saying this?
Jonas Knox
Yeah, because it seems so. It seems so chaotic.
Colin Cowherd
You're not going to be allowed in.
Jonas Knox
The Permanis, it seems. Well, yes, I can, because I keep. I'm a Pittsburgh and I keep it.
Colin Cowherd
Real because you got a sandwich.
Jonas Knox
412 runs through these veins, my guy. And that ain't going to change. I'm in the Pittsburgh hall of Fame. What sports hall of Fame, baby.
LeVar Arrington
What is.
Colin Cowherd
What is your Permani sandwich?
Jonas Knox
What is it, the Big Fish?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. If you go to the Permanis in State College, you can see lavar Arrington up on the wall. There's a drawing of lavar up on the wall.
Jonas Knox
They put the, they put the historical sports figures of the area on, on the wall. Wall. I happen to make the wall with some pretty special people.
Colin Cowherd
You can see my face on a urinal cake, I believe if you go. But the big fish on the mat on the floor.
Jonas Knox
I thought it was the name of the company, but it was actually.
Colin Cowherd
You like been here. Dang. Yeah, look, the Terry McLaurin situation. We can catch up with Albert Brear next hour and see if he knows any of the latest stuff.
Jonas Knox
Sounds intriguing, right? Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Not the least for what we do.
Jonas Knox
And I hope it happens. I've heard the rumors circulating around and it was just worth having the conversation because to me, if you're going to put your. Because basically, in essence, this is Aaron Rodgers career like he's, he's going to finish up, he's going to wrap it up here in Pittsburgh. You have Mike Tomlin who could basically, you know, this could be it for him. You had, what's the name of the gm, what's his name?
Colin Cowherd
Omar Khan.
Jonas Knox
Omar Khan. This could be the end of his career.
Colin Cowherd
Damn.
Jonas Knox
I mean in Pittsburgh it could be the, the, it could cost a lot of people their jobs if this doesn't work, if the stakes are this high. If the stakes are this high. You've made this many decisions and this many moves to, to try to make your team better. Are you telling me in, in a, in a decision, in a movement, in an off season where we could possibly save our jobs and put us in a position to build our team for the future by creating draft capital, that you would not sacrifice a player even of the caliber of T.J. watt, you would not sacrifice him for that? It's just, it's someone, it's one of them hard questions is what you get the big dollars for. But it's worth discussing because I'm giving Aaron Rodgers as many weapons as I possibly can and adding Terry McLaurin and some, some, some strong draft capital with doing that, it just seems like it might be the right decision to make.

Jonas Knox
Turn on the news.
Colin Cowherd
This is the herd line news. Yeah, right. Music yeah. Let's go. Damn. Come on. All right, guys, come on. Big night in LA. Milestone moment for Clayton Kershaw. Just the 20th pitcher in league history to record 3,000 career strikeouts. And here it was on AM 571.
Jonas Knox
Two pitch strike three called.
Colin Cowherd
There it is. He Got him with a slider strikeout. Number 3,000 for Clayton Kershaw.
Jonas Knox
History at Dodgers Stadium.
Colin Cowherd
Obviously Kershaw hasn't quite been the same in several seasons, but great to see him finally achieve that greatness at home in front of the Dodger faithful at Chavez. Review. He was getting lit up early. Did not look good. Yeah, it didn't look like he was going to make it through there, but he pulled it off. Because Dave Roberts, I don't want to say gamble's the right word, especially in today's sports climate, but Dave Roberts, he pulled him after 69 pitches in Colorado because he wanted to set it up or yeah, Colorado because he wanted to set it up to where he could do it at home in front of the crowd. And it wasn't until his last, last inning, last pitch that he was able to get that third strikeout. But other than that, it was, it was not looking good. And then Freddie Freeman walk off at the end was appropriate. That was perfect. So good. Good night for the Dodger fans. Gotta love those magical moments. All right, Honus, we're gonna say this one's for you and the in laws. The U.S. men's National Team captured a 21 win over Guatemala to advance to the Gold cup final.
Jonas Knox
Is that right?
Colin Cowherd
Taking place on Sunday against Mexico. Yeah. This is one of, this is of course, the last major competitive tournament for the U.S. as they prepare for the World cup next summer. Now look, against Guatemala, that's the thing. Okay, I will. So this, this sets up the Mexico US Final again. Correct. All right. Now, they do not like each other. Nope. No, there's been, I mean, maybe the.
Jonas Knox
Stakes are a tad bit higher today.
Colin Cowherd
There's been reports of bags of urine being thrown on the field. Players, they get hugs. It gets a little, gets a little spicy. I, I have a strict policy, okay. Root against whoever the in laws are rooting for.
Jonas Knox
Right.
Colin Cowherd
So go usa. And I just hope that I'm in a crowd, a room full of the in laws to where I can go ahead. Well, just a crowd with enough people. Cuz I, I, I was at, I wrote this, I was at a Mexican restaurant. I was at a Mexican restaurant and they were playing the Netherlands in the World cup back in, I think it was 2012. And I remember my, I was with my wife, then girlfriend at the time and we were there and it was, I mean there was guys sitting there with the Mexican flag draped around them and I didn't have a rooting interest at all. We're just watching and I looked around.
Jonas Knox
I was like, oh, let me go stir this up.
Colin Cowherd
So I started live betting on the Netherlands, and I didn't think they had any shot at winning. Mexico gave up a goal with, like, two minutes left and then lost it in extra time. And I looked around, and everybody was just mortified, and I thought it was hilarious. I grew up a Cubs fan. I got the right.
Jonas Knox
You got to be a tad bit careful doing that with this one.
Colin Cowherd
That's.
Jonas Knox
You just got to be a tad bit careful right now. I mean, I'm just saying. You want to be politically correct.
Colin Cowherd
No. Well, look, they.
Jonas Knox
I mean, am I wrong? Am I wrong for this?
Colin Cowherd
No, listen, there's. I guess if people want to take it that direction, they can. I'm looking at it from a soccer standpoint.
Jonas Knox
Okay.
Colin Cowherd
You know, I'm just. Whatever. Root against the opposite team. That's. We've talked about this before. One of the great joys in a man's life is when you can root against your buddy's team.
Jonas Knox
Oh, yeah.
Colin Cowherd
It's just a wonderful moment.
Jonas Knox
And so some of the best fights.
Colin Cowherd
In hugs after, like, you don't even care about the other team. You just want your buddy's team to lose. Oh. One of my best friends has always been a Kings fan, and when they were up 20 on the Warriors a couple years ago to finally win a playoff series for the first time in forever, and then they ended up losing to the Warriors. It was such a great feeling. Oh, yes. It really.
Jonas Knox
It makes us sick as a Lakers fan.
Colin Cowherd
It just. But there's something about it. You can't explain it. And she'll ask me all the time, like, why do you just root against the other team when you know, we're all rooting for Mexico or whoever? And I was like, because that's what I do. That's what guys do.
Jonas Knox
There you go.
Colin Cowherd
It's what we do. It's fun. Nobody wants to be at the bottom of the pile. So if you can somehow find someone else to drag down and throw them underneath, you're like, that's exactly. Exactly where we want to be heading, by the way.
Jonas Knox
You do not want to know what happens at the bottom of the pallops.
Colin Cowherd
What happens?
Jonas Knox
Oh, all kinds of screaming, hollering. Just very inappropriate things happen at the bottom of the pile. You don't want to be in the bottom poking and prodding. Oh, no. It's like more like grabbing and twisting.
Colin Cowherd
God. Pinching and pinching.
Jonas Knox
Pinching and pulling.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jonas Knox
No, no. Let's go to break. I don't want to go any deeper into this.
Colin Cowherd
Oh God boss, why is that trial over?
Jonas Knox
It is. Can we talk again? Can we talk freely again?
Colin Cowherd
Oh no. Damn.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd
Episode: Hour 1 - Is it Enough for the Lakers?
Release Date: July 3, 2025
Introduction
In the premiere episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosts Colin Cowherd, LeVar Arrington, and guest Jonas Knox delve into the recent developments surrounding the Los Angeles Lakers. The central question posed is whether the Lakers' latest moves are sufficient to propel the team into championship contention.
1. The Acquisition of DeAndre Ayton
The episode kicks off with a robust discussion on the Lakers' recent acquisition of DeAndre Ayton. Cowherd expresses skepticism about Ayton's impact, referencing his inconsistent performance and history of missed games.
Colin Cowherd [06:13]: "Deandre Ayton, which of the 40 games, or better yet, which of the 42 games he missed last year was your favorite? Is that an... I kind of like the... This whole thing is bananas."
Jonas Knox counters this viewpoint by highlighting Ayton's potential when fully engaged on the court.
Jonas Knox [06:29]: "I honestly believe as a player, when DeAndre Ayton is playing the game, he can be one of the more elite bigs in the game."
2. Evaluating Ayton's Role and History
The hosts delve deeper into Ayton's tenure with previous teams, Phoenix and Portland, discussing reported issues related to work ethic and team dynamics.
Colin Cowherd [07:15]: "According to an article from the New York Times that there were veterans were kind of fed up with him. He would show up late, he would miss team planes or be tardy to team planes... he was bought out and now he's a member of the LA Lakers."
Despite these concerns, Knox emphasizes a fresh start with the Lakers, suggesting that organizational changes could harness Ayton's abilities more effectively.
3. LeBron James' Legacy and Potential Team Moves
A significant portion of the conversation shifts to LeBron James' legacy and the possibility of him moving to the New York Knicks. The hosts debate how such a move could influence both James' standing in the NBA and the Lakers' future.
Jonas Knox [14:32]: "I think it's pretty spot on and on par for what could possibly take place with everybody getting what they want. I think the Lakers want to move on from LeBron James."
Colin Cowherd [15:09]: "I believe Cleveland's in an advantageous spot because... if Mike Brown does... if you're LeBron and this is all about you getting to another NBA Finals to have another shot..."
The discussion touches on the strategic moves LeBron might make to continue his championship pursuits, weighing the benefits of staying with the Lakers versus joining a team like the Knicks, which could offer a more conducive environment for winning titles.
4. Strategic Team Building: Balancing Offense and Defense
The conversation broadens to encompass overall team strategies, particularly focusing on the balance between offensive firepower and defensive stability. While acknowledging the Lakers' defensive assets, the hosts ponder whether enhancing the offense with players like Ayton is sufficient.
Colin Cowherd [10:10]: "I still look at this team and I go, they are at best fourth, fifth in the conference."
Jonas Knox [35:31]: "With Terry McLaurin, who is a known character guy... he's an Ohio Stater, so he understands the area. There's the connection with the quarterback that just got drafted from Ohio State."
The hosts debate whether investing in offensive talents can mitigate past defensive shortcomings, with Cowherd remaining cautious about the Lakers' overall trajectory.
5. Broader NFL Discussions: Pittsburgh Steelers' Outlook
While primarily focused on the NBA, the hosts briefly touch upon the Pittsburgh Steelers' upcoming NFL season, analyzing their position as underdogs in multiple games. This segment, though peripheral, offers a glimpse into the show's diverse sports coverage.
Colin Cowherd [37:16]: "They are underdogs in 11 of 17 games going into next year."
Conclusion
The episode wraps up with lingering questions about the Lakers' ability to leverage their current roster to achieve championship success. Colin Cowherd remains skeptical about the sufficiency of recent acquisitions, while Jonas Knox offers a more optimistic outlook, emphasizing the potential upside of strategic player additions.
Colin Cowherd [38:38]: "If I'm Pittsburgh, I... would feel better about my chances going into next year with TJ Watt as opposed to no TJ Watt."
Ultimately, Hour 1 - Is it Enough for the Lakers? presents a balanced exploration of the Lakers' current state, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead for one of the NBA's most storied franchises.
