No doubt there. There's a really good hypothetical. Stephen A. Smith is chirping about whooping your kid's ass. So we'll, we'll get to a lot today. Is there a culture change on one particular team in the NFL? And I think there might be. But I want to start out by telling you that Chidor Sanders.

[Kavino]

Oh, boy.

[Rich]

Is much like a peach cobbler.

[Kavino]

Oh, boy. Before you get into that, let's build some suspense. How in the world is Shador Sanders like a peach cobbler? Rich is going to tell us.

[Rich]

Colin Cowherd, eat your heart out with this analogy. You think you're the king of analogies.

[Kavino]

Well, can we just first say that as a host, how great is it when something like this happens because you know, you have content for weeks, you're like, oh, my goodness. But just as a fan, how are you not glued just to see what happens? I mean, it became so drama filled. Such a drama show as Triple G would say, such drama show that the president got involved. People screaming, racism, everyone trying to figure out why. How did this happen? What a crazy weekend it was revolving around Shador Sanders. We had never been so glued for so long to the NFL draft.

[Danny G]

Best TV ratings ever for day three of a draft, no doubt.

[Rich]

I mean, if it was more than eight people, I'd say the ratings were beat, no doubt, by day three, the fourth and fifth round. The simple fact that you were sitting around with that on the background, casually listening when a potential team came on the board. Picks in, honey, I think it might happen. Get over here.

[Kavino]

I want to say that I did feel for the Sanders family, respectfully. Like, I can only imagine what it was like behind closed doors, right? The stress and the drama and just the shock of it all. Because it seemed a little unfair. Or is it?

[Rich]

We'll speculate they got money, fame, talent and a lot of things going in their favor.

[Kavino]

Just as a spectator who loves drama, I fully admit, as unfair as it may have been or as stressful as it may have been for the family, I took great joy in the. In the drama of it all. Just in the drama. Like, I can't believe this is going on.

[Rich]

As the meme went that you and Danny G. We were all sending over the weekend. The super bowl doesn't prove that the NFL is king. Having 250,000 people stand in a parking lot to hear 32 men's names called, that proves that the NFL is king.

[Kavino]

Yeah. That's wild when you really think about it. In the cold, no less. Just in the cold. There's no like event.

[Danny G]

Yeah. And that's the smaller city that the NFL has held a draft.

[Kavino]

Yeah. There's no. Is there a live band that I don't know about? But there's nothing but people's names.

[Danny G]

They did have a house band.

[Kavino]

Did they have a house. But no one's going there to see the house band. But really it's just to hear people's names called. 250,000 people out there with their earmuffs and freezy freakies on. Crazy. That's how big NFL is.

[Rich]

Unreal. The interest level in something. Like you said, it's just the calling of 32 men's names fanatics. Hundreds of thousands of people. It's amazing. NFL king. So how is Shinore? Now that I built the suspense, how is Shore Sanders? Like a peach cobbler. Before I tell you, let me set up a few things. You see people talking about, could there be collusion or racism? Camino, you hit me with the fact right before the show of the first round, of the 32 men chosen, how many were African American?

[Kavino]

30 were men of color, 29 were African American.

[Rich]

So we're talking two white linemen. Here it is.

[Kavino]

The top three draft picks were black. Six out of 10 were black. And again, 29 out of the first 32 were black players.

[Rich]

I made the comment on social media, I did a little post at Covinon Rich that I think there's something we all, not all of us, but the casual non football fan that just love to jump in on the conversation are forgetting a simple fact about any draft teams go after what their needs. 27 of the 32 teams, their needs, talent, potential.

[Kavino]

But yeah, their needs is primary number one. I'd say.

[Rich]

Yeah, 27. I'd say of the 32 teams and.

[Kavino]

This draft Wasn't a quarterback. Heavy needed draft.

[Rich]

And arguably, as Dan Beyer pointed out last week, they rated all of last year's quarterbacks higher than the batch this year. So 27 of the 32 teams arguably had no interest in a quarterback. The Buffalo Bills, they got Josh Allen. They're not picking a quarterback. Up next, the Eagles not picking a quarterback. You could name 27ish of the teams that have no interest in wasting a pick anytime early on on a quarterback. You're the Bengals. You're picking a quarterback. You just gave Joe Burrow that money. You could say that about again, I'd say 27 of the 32 teams, which means it leaves you 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 teams.

[Kavino]

Five teams. And if you rubbed any of those teams the wrong way now you're cut down to maybe two or three teams or maybe none at all. I will say this before we get it going. People were screaming racism. A lot of people were screaming that over the weekend because there was the sense of, well, why? But maybe it's as simple as the interview process. Maybe it's as simple as he did blow the interview process. I don't know why and I don't think it was racism, but I hundred percent believe something was held against him.

[Rich]

Listen, I just don't think it was.

[Kavino]

The color of his skin.

[Rich]

I said this to you the other day. I think there's nothing cooler than someone with confidence. Remember the other day we talked about the difference between confidence and arrogance when it comes to dating regular people at your job. It doesn't need to be athletes. And I said there's that thin line between confidence and arrogance. There are two places that these young men hung out while they were waiting for the draft. One, as you pointed out backstage, what looked like an Ashley Furniture warehouse, all dressed up, ready to be called walking down that sweet long hallway, putting on their lids hat. And the other option was at home with their friends and family. Shador Sanders was the one guy that had a special party room with the word legend on the wall. So that right there you could say is indicative of what this young man brings to the table. And if you interpret that as arrogant instead of confident, then he's not your guy.

[Kavino]

Well, you can interpret it as a, as a me type of guy and less of a team type of guy. We don't know that to be true. Be legendary is the family mantra. Legendary is sort of his thing. He goes by look. I think he rubbed some people the wrong way. I think people have a hard time believing that. And that's why he went 1 44th in the pick. It was wild to see no one here. Let's get it straight. We've said this over and over again. Because when you talk racism and everything else got to be very clear. Everybody here grew up idolizing his dad. Huge fan of his dad. I go as far back as his Yankee days. I was a fan of his dad.

[Rich]

I'm a 49ers fan. That Deion Sanders was the reason the 49ers got over the hump.

[Kavino]

So nobody.

[Rich]

I'm a coach prime fan.

[Kavino]

Nobody rooting against Shador. In fact, I hope he uses this as fuel to the fire. And maybe this is life's way of giving him what he needed, which is humility. If that was the problem, if that was the issue, and based on all the reports or a lot of reports that we're seeing, coaches said he rubbed them the wrong way. I find that much easier to believe than racism when 29 of the 32 were black.

[Rich]

Now, Danny, first round Danny G. You. You said you saw a pretty cool thought about the Raiders, who were one of those five teams that could potentially have wanted a quarterback.

[Danny G]

Yeah. And it's interesting because Dan Buyer and I thought that Jalen Milroe would be a good choice for the Raiders backup. He winds up going to the Seahawks with the pick they got for Geno Smith. So that was ironic. But Charles Robinson, he tweeted this out. He said Tom Brady knows Dion well. Brady mentored Shador. Of course. Brady is advising the Raiders on the QB spot. And this was during the weekend. They've passed Shador eight times so far with six picks and two trade downs. There's zero chance Brady and the Raiders are wielding a Sanders grudge. Zero. And yet they're passing something.

[Kavino]

I do, again, 100% believe something was held against them. It could be the media circus that surrounds him. It could be his dad. I don't know. It could be the interview process, which we alluded to already. But. But what I started to realize, too, as the numbers went on and on and on, it became more evident to me that something was going on and that other teams were probably backing off even more because it became more and more of a spectacle and even more and more of a circus on whoever picks them at that point, again, the.

[Rich]

Draft in the NFL, a lot of these guys do end up being part of the team or getting a fair shot. So with that said, you have to keep in mind that people are going after their needs. I saw the Buffalo Bills GM talking about how we went all defense because that's what they needed. Teams go after their needs and this.

[Kavino]

Was a very lineman heavy draft because that was the need for the most.

[Rich]

Part, I think Shador Sanders is like peach cobbler. Now before I tell you how Dan Buyer, did you have any thoughts while you were watching this go down?

[Sam]

Yeah, I mean a lot of thoughts on it. But the only thing that I was going to weigh in because, because you guys mentioned Deion and his role in your guys lives. I don't think that this is anything new in the NFL where at some point if the talent doesn't, doesn't overtake the issues or the distractions, you're not going to invest. If Deion wasn't as great as he was, he wouldn't have gone fifth overall in the 1989 draft. But the Atlanta Falcons felt it was worth it and sure seemed like it was. And then going on to the Niners and the Cowboys, Eli Manning the same thing. Like in terms of if you're the Chargers at that point and he's telling you don't draft me and you're like, well, nobody's going to tell me what I'm going to do. Talent wins over. They know that they can then trade Eli and get a bunch of different stuff. It didn't match up with Shador Sanders. And I think that that story, while it came in a different form or in a different package that we're used to, has gone on in the NFL for decades.

[Rich]

No doubt. And what I love about this story is whether people are saying collusion, racism, this, that whatever your angle is, or hey, he just wasn't needed or wanted by those teams. I think the reality is he got drafted by one of the few teams where I think he will have a shot to start at some point next year. So let's say he does get drafted in the third round by the Bengals or third round or fourth round by the Eagles, he's never going to see the field. He actually ended up in a scenario, one of the few where this young man could actually start next year and win the job.

[Kavino]

That's the silver lining. But on the flip side of that argument, 144th pick, fifth round is a little more expendable.

[Rich]

But if you, if you Cavino get the opportunity, isn't that what the draft is all about? Getting the opportunity to hit camp and pedal the medal, win this job. And Chadhar Sanders, if he has the talent that we all believe he does in a quarterback room with Joe Flacco and a couple Other young dudes. Shador Sanders should, in his mind be like, I'm going to win this job.

[Kavino]

And turn this dilemma into dilemmonade. Yeah, we're all excited to see it.

[Rich]

How is he like peach cobbler?

[Kavino]

How in the world, Rich, tell us, tell us, how is Shadar Sanders like peach cobbler?

[Rich]

I always try to think of a dumb analogy, and I know you guys get a kick out of my dumb analogy. So here goes. Let's say you're at a party and there's a dessert table. Like Spot. What did you call. What do you call dessert table? You used some fancy word before.

[Kavino]

Oh, a Viennese table at a wedding.

[Rich]

A Viennese.

[Sam]

Look at this guy.

[Kavino]

Oh, with like fondue. Yeah, like little. Like little treats, little pet foods.

[Rich]

Let's say there's little creme brulees.

[Kavino]

Snacky snacks.

[Rich]

Let's say there's cheesecake cannolis on a tower. Oh, a chocolate. What about a chocolate tower?

[Kavino]

Don't mind if I fondue.

[Rich]

Now there's a peach cobbler at this dessert table. My goodness. You know what, Danny G. You really want a piece of that peach cobbler. But, you know, you've noticed no one's really touching the peach cobbler.

[Kavino]

Not a peach guy.

[Rich]

But you know what? People are going after the cheesecake and the creme brulee and all the little treats.

[Kavino]

All the cookies are going fast.

[Rich]

And as time goes by, you're like.

[Danny G]

Actually, I like cobbler.

[Rich]

You know what? Maybe the Browns like cobbler, too. But you know what? When you see that no one else is touching it, you're confident that I could come. I could sit down, have a cup of coffee, have my cheesecake. I could come back and I betcha that peach cobbler still going to be there. And I think there came a point, and I'll give you the point that for me, when the Raiders had back to back picks, I believe 98 and 99.

[Danny G]

Yeah, they went o line and they.

[Rich]

Went o line o line. And then the next day when you're like, all right, here we go. We're going to start the day two now.

[Danny G]

Yeah.

[Rich]

108 and the Steelers and the Saints and everyone, no one's going. I feel like Cleveland might have said, ooh, I think we want them. But you know what? Much like the peach cobbler, I could come back later.

[Kavino]

And it's still going to be there.

[Rich]

And it's still going to be there. Because if everyone else had a chance to already get a slice of that peach cobbler and they're not going for it. If by the certain point, you. You. You got a chance to look and say, all right, I'm gonna make a pick, I pick again in. Cause you know, in the later rounds, it's all mixed up. So a team may have a pick, and then 15 picks later have another pick. If you do the math and look in between, all right, well, I know this. They're not going to take Shador. So I'm going to fulfill my safety need or my o. Line need. And when I get everything I need, then I will pick up Shador Sanders.

[Kavino]

What you're saying is Shador Sanders is like peach cobbler. Because even the people that showed interest in peach cobbler made it clear they weren't taking any because they were taking cookies. So you always come back later.

[Rich]

It's going to be there. It could.

[Danny G]

It could wind up being a mistake, though. What if you waited too long? You go to the. What do you call it? Spot a Viennese table, and. And there's just crumbs left. And then your auntie comes over to the table and starts raving about how delicious that peach cobbler was.

[Rich]

That's the risk that team took. But I think there were a few teams playing almost. Almost like dessert table.

[Kavino]

Rich is right.

[Rich]

NFL draft roulette.

[Kavino]

Essentially, it was evident no one was taking the people that even were interested.

[Rich]

You're playing chicken show.

[Kavino]

They weren't going to take them.

[Rich]

You're playing chicken at that point. And I think eventually there were teams that were like, all right, we'll take him if he drops to this. They were playing a round of how far could this go? Chicken. Because they're like, all right, well, guys, we still need secondary help. Man, I love Shador. No one else is picking him. Get that great. Get that great free safety from lsu, and then we'll come back and get him later. It got to the point where it was almost laughable that pass, pass, pass, that you thought he'd still be there. And I think, Cleveland, we may look back in five years when Shador Sanders, for all we know, he matures into a great NFL quarterback.

[Kavino]

That would be awesome.

[Rich]

And we say, my goodness, did Cleveland play this draft? Right?

[Kavino]

This peach cobbler's fantastic. I can't believe everyone didn't eat it. That's what we're going to say.

[Rich]

What did you do? You ate creme brulee.

[Kavino]

What a fool. Peach cobbler is amazing.

[Rich]

My question is, you had some Jackson tart to get it. Oh, hey, let's leave now.

[Kavino]

Very good.

[Rich]

And also the don't mind if I fondue.

Oh, you like it?

I liked it. Then why did the Browns load up on apple strudel, you know, with another quarterback? Like why did they do that? Because I think, I think plentiful quarterbacks we learned with Michael Penix Jr last year what happened Kirk Cousins. Why would you pick a quarterback? It's a fickle position, my friend.

[Kavino]

And it might be as simple as this. The Giants start like maybe it's as simple as Dart's a better fit for that team.

[Rich]

But why did Cleveland go with another quarterback? That's a great question, Sam. Now they have five.

[Danny G]

And I think Rich to his point, that's the eye test for those of us who watched college football. We're like that QB is not as good as Shador. So there's, there's more to this.

[Kavino]

That's why I said Danny G. I don't believe the color of his skin was the issue but I hundred percent do believe that something was an issue and held against And I think again.

[Rich]

My guess and I'm no, you know that's some blowhard on the radio. That's accuse what's going to happen. But I'll tell you my thoughts. I think I'm just a doofus on the radio. I think next year pause.

You're a doofus in real life, not just on the radio.

I'm curious to see on who does what in terms of what was the, the, the Mary date? You know, whatever.

[Kavino]

The Mary kills.

You got five quarterbacks, kiddos. Sean Watson's out of the picture, but.

I want to marry Joe Flacco.

You're not, you're not carrying four.

So you're likely carrying three. Are you really going to carry three rookies? Are you going to trade Kenny Pickett now to another team after acquiring him. If someone needs one, they've got an. They got an interesting situation that will.

He could go eat chicken cutlets with Tommy DeVito because he's trying to figure out the same thing, like, what's going on here.

[Danny G]

There were national articles this morning trying to stir it up to DB's point, saying Shador could be cut before the preseason's over.

[Rich]

Let's go over it. So we have. We have Joe Flacco, who I think.

[Kavino]

Would be a great mentor and a.

Guy that would be okay taking the backseat.

[Kavino]

Yeah.

You bring him back after not wanting him back next year. It's almost like a. Hey, we messed up. We'd like to. From what he did two years ago.

And veteran leadership won a Super Bowl. It seems like a really good dude.

And leader Joe Flacco. You got Chador.

And then give me the other two who had insert.

And he's finally getting his chance.

25. Going to be 26 this year. And interestingly enough, it was Louis Riddick, a black broadcaster, who was his biggest cheerleader, saying, I would have taken him way before Shador. So the race thing, I hate that argument. When it's not. When there's no signs of it to me.

But like Rich before, the silver lining here, and it does work out for everybody is that he gets to start or he has the solid chance to start. Now they could do a new season of quarterback on Netflix with just the Cleveland Browns.

You know, it's interesting, you forget it was only a couple years ago that my 49ers chose simply based on athleticism and pure what looked to be a skill set. Trey lance with the third pick. And at the very end, the joke was Mr. Irrelevant. Do you mean the guy that's about to get paid 50 plus million dollars a year? Brock Purdy. So quarterbacks are found in all rounds of the draft. How often do first rounders flop?

[Kavino]

I think fifth round, though, the stat was. They don't really usually translate. There was some stat to back that, but back up the fact that it rarely happens.

[Rich]

Roll with it. Because Brock Purdy. Look at what it took Brock Purdy to start in the NFL. It took a few things. It took Trey Lance to stink and get hurt.

It took Garoppolo to sort of get back in there and then for him to get hurt. And you and I were at that game in San Francisco when they were playing the Dolphins. And when he got in that game, everyone, including me, a Niners fan, was like, who's it? Brock. Brock Proust, the guy behind Brock Purdy. Where was he? What was it? Well, the Mr. Irrelevant Guy. It took Lance stinking and getting hurt and Garoppolo then to also get hurt for Brock Purdy to get his chance. And now he's about to make, like I said, 50 plus million dollars a year.

Deion Sanders tweeted out that he'd never want to go to the Browns or allow his son to go to the Browns. He'd pull an Eli Manning and bounce. So that didn't really age well. But not the only news out of D.C. today, guys. The Washington Commanders finalized their deal with the District of Columbia to build the new stadium on the side of their old stadium, RFK Stadium. The new facility, which the commanders will put $2.7 billion towards, could open as soon as 2030. It'll feature a glass roof which would allow the facility to host Super Bowls and final fours. About $1.15 billion in public funds also going towards the stadium, along with the 2.7 billion DOL put forth by the Commanders. But the Commanders getting a new home?

[Rich]

That's a big deal to be in the super bowl city mix.

[Sam]

Yes, that's a big deal, at least to get one. The Final Four again is another. You can have a lot more flexibility when you have that roof on a facility, but sometimes it's not practical and other times just cost too much.

[Kavino]

Other news Speaking of Cleveland, cleveland.com saying the Browns are not likely to pick up the fifth year option on quarterback quarterback Kenny Pickett's contract. The big news of the day was in the NBA, Damian Lillard of the Bucks suffered a torn left Achilles tendon in last night's Game 4 loss to the Pacers. Out for the rest of the postseason. Next year could be in jeopardy as well because of the severity of the injury. Jimmy Butler's officially listed as questionable tonight for the warriors as they face the rockets at 10 Eastern. ESPN says that Butler is going to play tonight despite that hip contusion. Warriors are up 2 1. The first game of the night is game four in Miami Heat, home to the Cavaliers as the Cavs try to sweep this series. Tip off at 7:30 Eastern. And a note from hockey. Pittsburgh Penguins fired head coach Mike Sullivan today after 10 seasons. He had led them to two Stanley cup titles. Guys, back to you.

Let's wrap on Shador Sanders. Any final thoughts? Listen, he's going to get a chance to play. That's all he could possibly want.

The positive is that he is going to get a chance on one of the few teams that I think the quarterback position is up in the air. 20, as I said before, 27. I'd say of the 32 teams, you know who the quarterback is. Week one, the Browns are one of the five where it's a wide open. You know, this is a great scenario for him.

[Kavino]

There's a viral clip that's sort of surfacing now of him and his dad, him and Dion talking about the quarterback situation in Cleveland. And he's like, yeah, Joe Flacco's there and Deion Sanders, like he's, he's my age, you know, which implies to me that, yeah, he's going to be a great backup to Shador. I think that he's going to be a great mentor to Shador. I think it's a perfect fit. I really do.

[Rich]

Again, trying to be positive. People keep saying like, well, what if he went earlier to who? What if the Bears drafted him? They got Caleb Williams. What if the Rams drafted him? They just signed Matthew Stafford. A couple. For a couple more years. So I think this is a great spot for Shador. What do you say, Matt? Georgia, you're on with Kavino and Rich.

[Dan Beyer]

First of all, I'm from Georgia. We know peach cobbler around here. There's some ladies that can take a hundred dollars worth of stuff and make stuff you don't want to eat. And your Grandma put about $9 in some stuff that you want to take home with you. So what I'm trying to say is he gets his chance. Two things real quick. First, he don't need to be telling the NFL if you don't want to change your identity, don't worry. You know, all that talk. But the racism part needs to go away, y'all. I mean, the league's 80% black. Half the coaches are black. Can we get past that?

Well, here's the thing, too, though. You know, there are a lot of cases where that would apply, and when you just throw it out there all the time, it waters those significant stories down a little bit. Like, this is not one of them. It's his attitude. It's the interview process. It's much easier to believe it was something other than that.

[Rich]

Hey, guys. Okay, I think there's an elephant in the room here that nobody's paying attention to. I've never seen anybody so arrogant and so pompous. And his father cultivated that in him. His dad should be ashamed of himself for doing that.

Yeah. I mean, I don't know about ashamed. Again, confidence and arrogance, thin line. I think maybe he's a young man still trying to find that balance.

[Kavino]

Let's keep this in mind. Arrogance, cockiness, confidence, whatever you want to call it, none of those are illegal. Right? He's not a bad kid. He never did anything wrong. You might not like his attitude. That's why it's really. It's really easy to believe he just was a little much or rubbed people the wrong way in the interview process.

[Rich]

It'd be like a young editor coming in here, Fox Sports Radio and telling Big Mike, who runs this place?

[Kavino]

Here's my hours. Here's how it's going to be. And just so you know, you're lucky to have me here.

No one's there. Dion's the only one that can do it. So while it may not be ultimately him and be a disgrace, I don't mind the marketing and, and everything you do with Colorado. There is a responsibility on Dion shoulders that I, that I think he needs to bear.
