J. Mac Only a few football games left. I said a couple of weeks I'm going to take the Buffalo Bills to win the Super Bowl. I still feel very strongly about that. And how do you feel after the weekend?
J. Mac
Go Bills baby. Bills Mafia. Let's go.
Colin Cowherd
All Right. So let's start with this. The Buffalo Bills, and this is not generally what they have been since Josh Allen arrived, avoided losing more than they won that football game. No turnovers and one penalty. Smart, adult, focused football. They've always been gifted, but a little loose, never quite disciplined. Felt kind of reactionary. Not this team. From the opening drive, ran the ball, not heavily reliant on Josh Allen. It was clinical, it was effective. Much more than it was impressive. I mean, Josh Allen only had 147 yards, total yards, fewest of his career in a playoff game yet. I've never been more impressed. This is what the Kansas City Chiefs did when they moved off Tyreek Hill. They went from a fireworks show to a more effective football team. And that's what I saw. Responsible football, one penalty. Jimmie Johnson's been saying this for years. You will lose more playoff football games than you'll win. Josh Allen sacked one time. He had four attempts. This is the strongest armed guy in the league. Josh Allen had only four attempts over 10 yards. Now, the Ravens were bigger and flashier. They averaged 7.3 yards of play. It was big. Derrick Henry run. Big pass by Lamar Jackson. They looked like Buffalo generally looks, but they had an ugly pick. They had a couple of fumbles. They had a drop, two point conversion. Baltimore looked like Buffalo for years. Mark Andrews, great player and great tight end, picked a bad day to have the worst game of his career. Lamar Jackson, I'll defend him. He played well enough to win. In fact, the Ravens never punted. I mean, think about that. You get Lamar Jackson is going to be mvp potentially. They never punted. They only got stopped when they stopped themselves. And that was the problem. They did and Buffalo didn't. They had 13 big plays. Bills had four. I watched that game and I thought, meet the Buffalo Bills. They are the new Kansas City Chiefs with a more dynamic offense. The Bills, finally, finally, and we've been saying this all year, this is the best supporting cast Josh has had, maybe the worst defense, but they're finally comfortable being effective. And by their standards, let's be truthful here, kind of boring by their standards, not most teams. So the Ravens kept pressing and making big plays and it worked to a large degree. But in my lifetime and even recent memory, the San Antonio spurs with Duncan, the Bama dynasty with Saban, the New England Patriots, this dynasty in Kansas City really started when Tyreek Hill left. The Bills have always had a Ferrari at quarterback. But you know what gets old? Speeding tickets. And vanilla remains the most popular ice cream. So congratulations. To the Buffalo Bills. Mature, focused, doubted on defense. Effective. One sack, one penalty. In the biggest game of the year, the biggest game ever for Josh Allen. He is back now to facing the vaunted Kansas City Chiefs. I said it last week and the week before, I think Buffalo wins the Super Bowl. And it's this pivot. From speeding tickets in the Ferrari to just letting all the other kids fly by. You don't beat yourself. Here's Josh Allen.
Josh Allen
After all year, this team has heard, we got no talent, we're too small, we can't stop the run. We're not good enough to compete. We just put our head down and worked hard. I'm so proud of our defense. I'm so proud of our offense and special teams. What a complete win. Obviously, on the offensive side of the ball, we wish we scored a little more so we didn't have to take it down to the fourth quarter like that. But that's a really good team. Credit to them as well.
Colin Cowherd
And it should be noted, you could tell this was game plan. The opening drive for the Buffalo Bills. Run, run, run. Short passes. This was their game plan. Let's not beat ourselves. We don't have to be the flashiest. We've done that thing. It doesn't get us to where we want to go. I really think championship teams pivot. Remember, Tyreek Hill leaves the Chiefs less flashy, more effective. Stefan Diggs, some drama leaves. And they immediately figure out we're not about one whiteout, we're about a collective. And if we don't beat ourselves, nobody else is going to beat us either. That's super bowl winning football. Run it, defend it. No penalties, no turnovers. Every team last couple of weekends that's won in the playoffs has had zero turnovers. Took Buffalo a while to figure it out, but, man, did they. Now let's go to the Eagles and the Rams. First of all, the fact that the Rams kept it close, tip of the cap to those guys, because I really do believe they need about four to five more players to beat a team like Philadelphia. But the Eagles have two stars and they are the best players in the NFL at their position. One is in his prime, Saquon Barkley, and one's a kid, Jalen Carter. And you know, I may have my reservations about Philadelphia, but they're great players, deliver when it matters, as dysfunctional as they can seem. No turnovers, only three penalties. And I've always rooted for great players to land in great organizations. Shohei Ohtani needed to be a Dodger, not an angel LeBron needed to be with Pat Riley, not the Cleveland Cavaliers. And Saquon Barkley deserved better than the New York Giants, who have increasingly over the last decade been highly dysfunctional. There is a short list on the greatest running backs I've ever seen. Walter Payton's the best ever. Barry Sanders way up there. But Saquon Barkley is on that short list as well. And day one of his career, even at Penn State when they had weak offensive lines and the Giants had horrible offensive lines, he's never been one to point fingers. He has been total class, understated, just does his job. And when hard working people get the opportunity to work with great people, magic happens. And I've always been, I tell my kids this, you don't really deserve stuff, you earn stuff. But I do feel in his case, he sort of deserved a great offensive line. And then he's got Jalen Carter slamming the door shut. Carter has a chance to be Reggie White. And Aaron Donald here, like unblockable. And the NFL is so quarterback centric that it is fascinating to watch. The Eagles have 65 net passing yards, the fewest in 10 years for a winning playoff team. I mean, A.J. brown could have read two books. This is. It's a Saquon Barkley team. And you know, the other thing I think about is here's a guy that was not on this team a year ago, and this is a team with Alphas. Best offensive line arguably in football. Great defensive line, A.J. brown. There are stars and alphas, Alpha, even the coach all over the locker room. And this quiet kid walks in and becomes the alpha of the Alphas. It's somewhat ironic and beautiful that in a loud city with a loud coach and loud fans and at times a loud organization, it's the quiet, classy kid who's taken over the team. He and the remarkable Jalen Carter. And we don't talk a lot about interior defensive linemen, but the Rams had a shot on a short week in the snow. After that, Puka Nukua cats down the sidelines. They had a chance to win this game. I'm sitting there on my couch thinking, timeout. The Eagles have the better roster. They're at home. They're better suited for snowy weather. Are the Rams going to pull it out? And Saquon did it on offense and Jalen Carter sealed it on defense. Here's Nick Sirianni. Jalen Carter is a special player and he's just done so many of the right things to continue to make himself a special player for him. To rush the passer the way that he did in our group, rush the way that we did in moments of where the footing wasn't great. That, that to me, that was a championship effort by the defense. He's so talented. But this league, there's a lot of guys that are talented and it takes more than talent to reach your potential. And he's continuing to rise and that speaks a lot to Jalen Carter. This Eagles football team feels like it's led by Jalen Carter, Saquon Barkley and the general manager. But what I do like about it as well is Jalen Hurts is okay with it. Jalen Hurts is about winning. That's all he cares about. You don't get a lot of ego. So it sort of all works as dysfunctional as it often feels. It just sort of all works for Philadelphia. So had a 30 weekend feel good next weekend. I do think Buffalo is the better team now. Can they win at Arrowhead? After watching him this weekend, I think what you're going to get is two, really the two best football teams I've seen in this league are both in the afc. And for a while this year in September, October, I thought Detroit was it. They're not. We'll address that after the break. And Philadelphia just seems like they let teams they're clearly better than stay in the game. Be honest about this. When Stafford completes that ball down the sideline to Puka Nkua, you were sitting there thinking they LA team on a short week without the personnel to match Philly is going to steal this game. I sat there and thought everything I was going to say about this game is going to be turned on its head. And then Jalen Carter back to back ends.
J. Mac
Yeah, Eagles have not been great in either playoff game, Colin. They have not. They did not look particularly sharp against the Packers.
Colin Cowherd
This is who they are.
J. Mac
Maybe you're right.
Colin Cowherd
I don't know.
J. Mac
I mean, are they going to cough up the football five times like the Lions did and give Washington the victory? I don't see that happening to do.
Colin Cowherd
You know, I mean they should be favored over Washington. I remember, I remember a New York Giants team that was good in the regular season like Washington and they went on the road with Eli Manning and they played with house money and there wasn't a lot of pressure. Now that Giants team had very good defensive personnel up front. It wasn't just Eli Manning and I just don't think Washington has the personnel. If Washington got to the super bowl, this is not a shot at anybody because they're going to go buy some really good players and this is a good front office. It would be the weakest roster to ever get to a Super Bowl. I mean, the fact that they're winning, it comes down to. It comes down to one player.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Well, let's just be honest. It comes down to one kid.
J. Mac
He's a little more than a kid now. But home teams, by the way, did you see that 8 and 2 in the playoffs, the two road wins to win, Washington in Tampa, Washington against Detroit. I mean, home teams are dominating the.
Colin Cowherd
Teams that are winning. No turnovers.
J. Mac
No turnovers as well. Yes.
Colin Cowherd
That has really been remarkable. You could always get away with one. Like turnovers one, you're done, you lose. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the iHeartRadio app.

Well, they were great in the 70s and they were great in the 80s, but due to ownership changes over the last 20ish plus years, Washington was a great football city with toxic ownership and they just dissolved into a puddle. And then this offseason I said I'm going to pick them. They flushed everybody out and I loved all the new people they brought in from coach, coordinator, quarterback, owner, gm and I said they're going to make the playoffs, but I didn't expect this in the middle of the season. Jaden Daniels, I loved him at Arizona State and lsu. He kind of got banged up in the middle of the season and they lost three straight games. And it looked like your typical good rookie quarterback who's coming back down to earth. We liked him a lot. In the last six games, he's won all of them. You get amazing upside, no downside. This kid has played, what, 19 games this year? No fumbles, not one. Even his last season in College, he was 1 and 3 against ranked teams. They had great receivers at LSU. Was it him or the receivers? He was a bit thin, physicality was concerned. He missed the playoffs. I mean, we knew he was good. He went number two and we knew he was good early in the season. Nobody saw this. Rookie quarterbacks don't become the best fourth quarter quarterback in the playoffs. Not named Patrick Mahone. He's gotten better on the road against better teams. This has never happened. His poise, I don't know what to make of it. It's unprecedented. I thought Andrew Locke was the best rookie quarterback I saw, but you got downside. He threw a lot of picks. He could be reckless. There is no reckless. It's all poise. I mean, against the blitz. Detroit blitzed him. His passer rating against blitzes, veteran quarterbacks don't do this is 137. And by the way, there have been rookie quarterbacks that got to a conference championship. Brock Purdy, Mark Sanchez, Flacco, Big Ben, they all had number one, number two or number three defenses. Kaden Daniels defense is 18th. There's one other elite player on the entire team, Terry McLaurin. So I feel like I'm watching two movies at once. Miracle with the late Herb Brooks and the natural Robert Redford. I don't even know what to make of it. I mean, if you were writing a script for this thing in Hollywood, about halfway through you'd be like, okay, okay, that part, part's not believable. Keep that part out. But I like the premise of it. I mean, we all thought he was good. Middle of the season, he had turbulence. But the smoothness, the poise, the ability on the road against the blitz, I've never seen anything like it. 19 games, does not have a fumble. If that's not a steady hand, I don't know what is. And I, I said this. What was really striking is when he went into camp with Washington, how veteran coach Dan Quinn and Cliff Kingsbury, and he's a rookie, could not stop with the effusive praise. And almost as A rule. Here's what you say about rookie quarterbacks in camp. Let's lower expectations. He's got a long way to go. Sean Payton loves Bo Nicks, but it was always about, let's slow down first NFL season. And Dan Quinn and Cliff Kingsbury were like, yeah, this doesn't look like anybody else. And it doesn't stoic in crisis. I said this. This roster won four games last season. And it's mostly the same roster with Jaden Daniels. And here is his head coach, Dan Quinn, after.
J. Mac
He just has a different poise about him than most. And he's a rare competitor, there's no doubt about that. But in those moments, he is. If he was a basketball player, he'd want the last shot as a ball player.
Colin Cowherd
He wants the ball in his hands.
J. Mac
To make the difference. And he makes great decisions with the football, and that takes real mindfulness.
Colin Cowherd
And. And I. I remember watching him at Arizona State and this sticks out to me. And he looked like he weighed 165 pounds. The helmet looked huge on him. And then he put on some weight and he went to lsu. And he's surrounded by better players. But I remember when he went from Arizona State to lsu, I had said on the air, I'm like, boy, you got a good one. And people at LSU who love their college football are like, overrated, not that good. And I'm like, no, no, he's pretty good. And then you hear Brian Kelly talking about him and then Dan Quinn and then. And again, mid season, did a three game losing streak. Play the Steelers. 50% completions. Just wasn't right. Okay, he'll pull back. He's a rookie. Everybody's got film on him. CJ Stroud. No, no, no, no. He did the opposite. He got healthier and he got better. And the idea of this roster ending up in the super bowl is as unprecedented as his poise in the fourth quarter. Hard to explain because we've never seen it. J. Mac with the news.
Dan Campbell
No, no, no, no.
Colin Cowherd
Turn on the news. This is the Herd line news.
J. Mac
All right, Colin, let's get started with that. Bill's mistake. Free performance against the Ravens. Really impressive stuff from Buffalo. Despite not overwhelming offensively, setting up a rematch from week 11 with the Kansas City Chiefs. Everybody's excited for it. Buffalo was the first team to defeat KC this season. But despite the win, Josh Allen knows that the Chiefs are a different team than they were two months ago.
Josh Allen
The regular season is what the regular season is, and doesn't matter how well you perform. You know, when you get to the playoffs, it doesn't really matter. And we lost 35 to 10 to this team. And, you know, it's hard to beat a team twice. We understand that. We know that. It's a team that we beat early in the season, but it's not the same team.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I like Buffalo.
J. Mac
The city or the team? The offense.
Colin Cowherd
Both are great. I like Buffalo. I think this is different. I think they've figured out the league. And it's really hard when you're young and talented to figure out the league. It takes a while to go. Yeah, it's not just about, you know, it's like in the NBA, you know, elevate others, not just yourselves. You know, LeBron took a while to figure out running down the floor and blocking shots from behind doesn't win titles. Team defense does. You know, hitting free throws does. Like, I just feel like this is. And we've been saying this all year, this is the best version of Buffalo. There's the fact that in the biggest game, they were really not reliant on Josh Allen. I mean, it was.
J. Mac
I want to ask you about that. So we know that the smart coaches. Game plan, specific.
Colin Cowherd
We're not.
J. Mac
I don't care what we did for 18 weeks. We're game planning for Baltimore. It almost felt to me like after they, you know, the two turnovers by the Ravens, Buffalo shifted their focus and they were like, we don't need to throw the ball. We just don't want to screw this up.
Colin Cowherd
Well, and. And their throws were not down the field.
J. Mac
Nothing down the field.
Colin Cowherd
No, no, I. And I think once. Once they had that ugly interception, I think Buffalo said, you know, this team's going to beat themselves. I mean, they have all the analytics. You go into the game knowing that any team that had a turnover lost their playoff game, you're at home, you feel you have the better quarterback. And the other thing about Buffalo, I'll say is we talk about Philly and Detroit's offensive line, Buffalo's offensive line. Now we put Dion Dawkins on this show once a month during the season. He's a great left tackle. How about that holding call on him? How outrageous. That was the worst call of the weekend. That was worse.
J. Mac
A lot of bad call.
Colin Cowherd
But I think Buffalo's O line is a lot better than anybody's acknowledging, like, that first drive of the game against Baltimore, they just marched down the field and you're like, wow, they didn't even need Josh Allen. Like, that's impressive. They've added Tight ends, wide receivers, even the running back, the backup running back. Davis, the young kid with. He's got an amazing pop.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, he kind of like an Isaiah Pacheco. You're like, you didn't watch him in college? And you look up and you're like, who is that guy?
J. Mac
I'm looking at their target share for wide receivers. Colin. They didn't throw to wide receivers other than Shakir Mack Holland's two targets. Amari Cooper won like they rushed for a buck 47. They're like, Listen, we're not going to lose this football game. Let's just run the ball.
Colin Cowherd
It was almost as if tour Tuesday or Wednesday when they did their install, they thought the weather was going to be worse than it was. I mean, that was my take during the game. Like, you know, you do the install Tuesdays and Wednesdays and you're like, listen, this thing could go sideways. And then they got into the game, they drove down and thought, we can run the football on this team. Yeah. And they. And I don't know if they changed their game plan, but it did feel like they came into this game thinking, this is going to be low scoring, don't make mistakes. And they kind of just stuck with it once Baltimore started making mistakes.
J. Mac
So if I told you Josh Allen would have 127 yards passing and the Bills offense would have one play over 20 yards, did you think they would beat the Ravens?
Colin Cowherd
No.
J. Mac
That's probably not enough.
Colin Cowherd
Baltimore on one drive had two Derrick Henry runs, a Justice Hill run, a Lamar pass. Like Baltimore in one drive in the second half had more big plays than Buffalo had all day.
J. Mac
Let me just two quick questions about the Ravens before we put them to bed for the offseason. Were you surprised Derrick Henry was not involved in either two point play in the second half?
Colin Cowherd
I was. I was. Mark Andrews had an ugly drop. But I will tell you this, even with Philadelphia, a couple of times I'm screaming at the TV guys, you have Saquon Barkley turn around and hand it off. I also think you prepare all week. Your offensive coordinator has all these cute goal line plays and they want to use them. I mean, we saw Ben Johnson try to flex. I think these offensive coordinators are out there. They build these plays, they build these clever play. I mean, Mark Andrews was wide open.
J. Mac
Yeah, you feel bad for Andrew. And then lastly on Lamar Jackson, real quick. I don't think anybody with a brain would put this loss on him. That being said, he had a pretty ugly interception in the first half. The fumble Basically handed Buffalo a touchdown. So now he kind of dug them a hole. He did dig him out of it with that final drive. I can't crush Lamar for this. Before, I didn't think he was awful.
Colin Cowherd
No, his passer rating was higher than Josh Allen. He dug themselves out of a hole. He had one terrible pick that was bad. If you go look at the fumble, it was a bad snap and he tried to be Superman and make a play out of it. And two, you know, you can say that's a fault, but that's his whole life. That's. That's basically his makeup is being Superman.
J. Mac
I would say the counter is Josh Allen. Did you see when they ended up kicking the field goal at the very end to go up 8? Oh, he almost downplay. He wanted to pitch. He was like stood up and he looked to pitch and he thought better of it and just tucked it in. That's smart. Josh Allen. Okay. That would have been a turnover and game changing stuff. I thought Allen was just a little better than Lamar yesterday. Next up, Colin. Let's go to the Lions, who are coming off that lost Saturday night. Oh, my goodness. Detroit's now racing for the exodus of Ben Johnson. A lot of people have him going to the Raiders and then Aaron Glenn. I'll tell you about him shortly. Dan Campbell's expecting to lose both coordinators. Here he is.
Dan Campbell
I think we've got guys on staff that I think are more than qualified and would be outstanding in those roles. But that does not mean that I'm not looking outside either. I'm not going to be in a hurry. You know, I'm not in a mad dash. No matter what happens, I want to do what's right by our team and what I believe is going to, you know, those guys will be able to stand in front of that room and command respect and get everybody going in the same direction, and we'll. We'll ultimately deliver the same message that I'm. I'm delivering.
Colin Cowherd
Well, windows close quickly in the NFL. Remember, the Seahawks got to two Super Bowls and we thought, man, this thing's gonna last a while. A lot of their best players were young. They never got back to a conference championship. So I'll just say this about Detroit. If they lose both their best coordinators. That happened to Philly.
J. Mac
Yep.
Colin Cowherd
And Philly replaced him with guys in the building. And Detroit, it sounds like it's going to replace their great coordinators with guys in the building. What happened to Philly? Very rarely is guy in the building the best person for the job. There's a reason he wasn't the coordinator. He wasn't ready for it. So you're. I'm. I'm always suspicious. I've seen this my whole life. Is that a coach in college football, a legend, leaves, and they give it to the friendly coordinator that everybody in the building likes. Well, why was the coordinator. The coordinator for how many years? Be very careful about just saying, hey, everybody in the building likes him. Remember, all the Raider players loved Antonio Pierce. Everybody loves the interim coach. Everybody loves the position coach. I'm. I'm just saying this league has a way of ending dynasties quickly. You have to. I mean, look at New England went from kind of game manager to Randy Moss, back to Brady now. I mean, there were several chapters with Brady. The Chiefs have gone from firework show to committee wide receivers, and I. And I saw Buffalo pivot this weekend. Just be careful about hiring guys in the building because everybody likes them.
J. Mac
Yeah, 49ers, by the way, have lost a lot of staffers the last, like, five years. McDaniel, Osala, all these guys. It's tough to replace and keep the continuity.
Colin Cowherd
McVeigh has lost multiple people and he's constantly cherry picking and finding.
J. Mac
Let me ask you about. We think Ben Johnson's going to the Raiders, right? He's going to get to pick his. Well, he gets to pick his gm, essentially, is what it sounds like. The Bears are not going to let him do that. We'll see. It's not a lock. I just need to ask about Aaron Glenn. They just sent me that he's doing a second in person interview with my Jets. Aaron Glenn, whose defense could not stop a nosebleed against a rookie at home on Saturday night. I'm just going to read off the last couple jets head coaches. You tell me, what is similar to Aaron Glenn here? Robert Salah, Adam Gaze, Todd Bowles, Rex Ryan, Eric Mangini. What are all those guys except for Gaze?
Colin Cowherd
Well, they're coordinators.
J. Mac
Defensive guys.
Colin Cowherd
Defensive guys.
J. Mac
What are we doing, another defensive guy as head coach for the Jets? They haven't figured out offense in, I don't know, 15 years. I. I need a new team, Colin. I. I can't. I mean, like, I like Aaron Glenn. I'm sure he's a great guy. You know, why can't we find an offensive guy to be that coach?
Colin Cowherd
Didn't you grow up near Washington? There's your team. It's right in front of a blaring neon light. Yeah, like me. Like me.
J. Mac
I'm gonna. I might have to turn to Jaden Daniels.
Colin Cowherd
That's not a hard turn.
J. Mac
That's not tough. He's fun to watch. But I'm on the Eagles this week, so don't say anything. Final story. Colin. Bears, they are looking for a head coach. Remember, they moved off Eber flutes after that Thanksgiving debacle and they still don't have a head coach. Reports indicate that Chicago called the Steelers about your guy, Mike Tomlin. Pittsburgh said, click, we're not talking to you, and said, no, thank you. I don't know. I saw they interviewed Eddie George over the weekend who's coaching at Tennessee State.
Colin Cowherd
Eddie George could be a good coach, but this is a big job for a guy from a small College.
J. Mac
They've had eight weeks and they're interviewing like their 17th person for head coach.
Colin Cowherd
It's crazy. It's. I said this. Didn't we say this about three weeks ago or two weeks ago? We're like, what are we doing here? Like, let's. Now. So if Ben Johnson doesn't get his pick, his own GM and goes to the Raiders, think about that. Chicago, the Raiders, with the most impulsive owner in the league, are gonna grab the top coordinator available in the draft. Not your Bears. The Bears continue to get in their own way.
J. Mac
Yeah. Hey, if I'm the Jets, we don't have a gm. Ben, who do you.
Colin Cowherd
Who do you want? We'll bring him.
J. Mac
We'll bring your GM in five years.
Colin Cowherd
You want Ben Johnson in New York?
J. Mac
Yeah. And then he'll run off Aaron Rodgers and he'll figure it out with some other.
Colin Cowherd
I gotta. I will say this, and this is not a shot at Aaron, but when you go to the jets, you have to inherit Aaron Rodgers.
J. Mac
Well, I don't. Not necessarily. There's a market for Rodgers out there. Somebody's going to want to take him. I sent Colin a clip of a headline from Us Weekly about ayahuasca and Rogers and wildfires. Like he just said some. I'm, you know, I'm done with him. I know he's your guy.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, he's sure he's my guy. J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the Herd Lie News address. You know, Houston fans, by the way, the Texans had the worst special team performance of any team I can remember in the playoffs, and they want to blame the refs. So we'll talk about that and Mahomes and his manipulation of the zebras when we return. Colin right? Colin wrong. Matt Hasselbeck, top of our two on a Monday Live in Los Angeles, it's the Hurts. Colin Cowherd
There was something sentimental. When you, when you send it, it's like, do I send the heart?
Bobby Bones
Now I don't like the color edition.
Colin Cowherd
It's extremely pink.

Colin Cowherd
So the Kansas City Chiefs again are in the AFC championship. And you know, listen, this is the way it is. You know, with the Patriots it was spy gate, it's Deflategate. Let's not mention that Brady was actually better statistically post Deflategate. But nobody likes, you know, somebody at the mountaintop forever. And so now it's always it's the refs. It should be noted Houston was abysmal on special teams. And I said this to a friend who hates the Chiefs. I said, if I'd have said before the game, yeah, Houston had the worst special teams performance ever against Andy Reid off a bye. Does it sound like you'd win? No. Now, the NFL is very protective of quarterbacks. Very protective. And most fans think they are overly protective of Patrick Mahomes. But here's the thing is he's the number one asset in the league. Players should not be officiated differently. But neither of those hits were challengeable. And the NFL owners voted against challenging the quarterback hit. They tried it with pass interference. It was an absolute disaster. So it's not going to be challengeable. And Mahomes does a remarkable job to sell it like D. Wade and James Harden did in the NBA. They sold it until the NBA had to change the rules. So what Patrick Mahomes does is what great players do. It could be Messi, Ronaldo, Dwyane, Wade, Mahomes. They leverage and manipulate officials. And remember, it's always about knowing the rules. If you go back and look at Rule 12, Section 2, Article 11, Roughing the Passer, this is what officials are told. And remember, it's not challengeable. When in doubt about a roughness call or a potential potentially dangerous tactic against the quarterbacks, and it's highlighted, the referee should always call roughing the passer. That's what it says. When in doubt, call roughing because it's not challengeable. You know, they say in baseball, tie goes to the runner. In the NFL, tie goes to the quarterback. If you're not sure, call it. Now that doesn't mean they. They won't miss stuff. Jared Goff got clobbered. They didn't watch it. They don't watch it. But with Mahomes in the pocket, this is not like Jared Goff is running down an interception or Jared Goff is running away from the plate. That's different. This is Mahomes in the pocket. And when in doubt, the rule stipulates call it. And it's not challengeable and it's not going to be challengable. So they know the rules. They manipulate. I don't like the sideline thing. Troy Aiken called him out for that. Don't love it, but it's just. Remember, every team that has had a turnover in the playoffs so far has lost. Add to that Houston special teams were so egregiously bad. They were pretty good the week before. They were terrible. So you can. You can say it's about officials, but Kansas City starts getting leads on teams, they don't make mistakes. Not a lot of penalties like Buffalo. They're a very mature team. That is great situationally, but that didn't stop Demiko Ryan's after from a not so subtle jab at the officials. We knew going into this game. And it was us versus everybody, right? When I say everybody is everybody, all of whatever.
J. Mac
Everybody.
Colin Cowherd
The naysayers, the doubt, right? Everybody. And again, I am reading the rule. I printed it this morning. When in doubt about roughness calls or potentially dangerous tactics against the quarterback. And it is highlighted. They highlight it. The referee should always call roughing the passer. It's right there, black and white in the rulebook. When in doubt, call it. They did twice. So I want to get back to Detroit, which got housed at home. So, you know, I talked about this. They're going to lose both coordinators. Presumably Ben Johnson's going to take the Raiders job. Wouldn't be the one I would take. Aaron Glenn may get the jets job and instead of going out for a global search, they're just going to hire in house. Philly did it. It was a disaster. So the other thing to think about though is did this game hurt Goff's confidence and did it make people in the organization doubt Jared Goff? Remember when Jared Goff could not beat the 49ers? And I started talking about this on the air, I said, I think McVeigh, his body language has changed on Jared Goff. He's getting very frustrated when they take shots of him about Jared Goff. And about six months later, they moved off in from At Stafford. So this Detroit team is going to remain very good. It is impossible to be a bad football team if you're competent at quarterback. With an unbelievably good offensive line and two great running backs. They're going to control the clock, they're going to score points. Detroit's going to be very good, but super bowl good. So there's a bit of the last couple of years in the nfc. Detroit has had a window. The Rams are good but not quite there yet. Green Bay is good but not quite there yet. Minnesota gonna use Darnold, don't have the guy they want yet. And Chicago defensive coach, maybe they upgrade there. That's just in division. The nfc, San Francisco sort of getting old. They're ready for a reboot. You've had a couple of year windows and now all of a sudden the Rams are like three players away. Here come the Packers. Uh oh. Jaden Daniels. Philadelphia is going nowhere. My entire life the standard has been raised in Detroit to very good that now is the expectation and it should be. But my whole life if you just said to a Lions fan they'll be very good, that was good enough. It's not anymore. Best online, best running back room B plus A minus quarterback, star receiver. Hutchinson's coming back, so. And the other thing is, I'm just watching this weekend. Stafford pocket quarterback, golf pocket quarterback. The mobile guys. Jaden Daniels, Jalen hurts, Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes. Now Lamar's off. Somebody had to lose that game. But you start looking at what is happening in the league and these mobile quarterbacks, I'm just telling you for Detroit, you're losing both coordinators. I think the NFC north is only going to get better. I think there are questions about Jared Goff. I just sat and watched that game and I thought, I remember the Seahawks, couple of Super Bowls and then it shot. And the standard now is much higher than it's been. Dan Campbell talked about this, the loss and going forward on the coordinators.
Dan Campbell
It's hard, you know, when you lose and you lose these games, man, it's like the players, you know, what they put into it. Well, people don't know, you know, what they go through. They have to get up bodies, be, you know, mentally stay locked in and do those things. So.
Colin Cowherd
Long season, you know, it's interesting. September, October, early November, Detroit was the best team in the league. And then slowly, all the defensive injuries, they didn't look the same. Ohio State appeared to bottom out in college football. They played tonight and they resurrected themselves in the playoffs. So, you know, we get all, we always call it overreaction Monday where people freak out. But the reality is, as the NFL keeps extending the season, we're at 17 games and they're going to extend it in the next couple years to 18. Is that a lot of it's just going to be attrition. Kansas City a few years ago got to a Super bowl, lost both offensive tackles and got clobbered. Some of this stuff is, are you healthy by the end of the year? And in college football again now with a playoff at 12, I saw a story yesterday where they're going to tweak it. They may go to 14. You can have these really bad games and rebounds. So you're seeing in college and pro now just do not define teams not only on a game, but don't do it on a month. So I kind of look at, I kind of look at Detroit and I'm like, I know they'll be fine. But I can remember McVay moving off golf. He just thought in big games against other great quarterbacks, he felt like he had the second best quarterback. And I'm watching golf against Jaden Daniels, the rookie, and I felt like, oh, Detroit's got the second best quarterback. Well, when you start looking at the playoffs, who's left? Josh Allen, Lamar Mahomes. You know, you, Jaden Daniels, you end up in these massive games against these ascending star quarterbacks. So next weekend, Commander's Eagles is one Eastern on Fox. Bill's Chiefs 6:30 Eastern NFL Conference Championship Schedule on Sunday. I like Philadelphia and I like Buffalo. I think it's interesting, Buffalo was an underdog at home. Buffalo now an underdog at Arrowhead, and Arrowhead is a great stadium. But I've watched Cincinnati and Buffalo, I've watched the Chargers go into that stadium, Denver go into that stadium and compete. So it's the home field advantage to me. J. Mac. Once they got the headsets in the helmets, the technology ramped up. It just doesn't. I mean, to me, if Mark Andrews catches that football, you know, we potentially are going to overtime.
J. Mac
There was still a minute 30 left. Josh Allen would score. He would take him down for the points. Come on. Right 90 seconds. Josh Allen. Colin. I just want to know what the whistle is going to be like. I want to know who the zebras are for Chiefs, Bills. I just went through. You're not going to believe this. The last 10 Chiefs playoff games, in nine of them, the opponent to Kansas City has had more penalties and more yards, penalty yards called against them than Kansas City. And don't tell me. Well, Casey's a better team. They're smarter. Ten playoff games and nine of them the opponent committed more penalties.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 1: Saquon Barkley is the Eagles, Jayden Daniels is Unreal
Release Date: January 20, 2025
Introduction
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, host Colin Cowherd delves into the latest developments in the NFL, focusing on standout performances by Saquon Barkley with the Philadelphia Eagles and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels. Alongside his co-host, J. Mac, Colin analyzes key playoff matchups, team dynamics, and the evolving landscape of the league’s top contenders.
1. Buffalo Bills' Dominant Playoff Performance
Timestamp: [02:38]
Colin kicks off the discussion by highlighting the Buffalo Bills' impressive playoff victory over the Baltimore Ravens. Notably, the Bills avoided turnovers and penalties, showcasing disciplined and mature football—a significant shift from their usual playstyle since Josh Allen's arrival.
Josh Allen's performance was under scrutiny, as he recorded his fewest total yards in a playoff game, yet the team's collective efficiency overshadowed his individual stats.
The Bills demonstrated a balanced attack, relying less on Allen and more on a robust offensive and defensive strategy, drawing parallels to the transformation seen in the Chiefs post-Tyreek Hill.
2. Analysis of the Baltimore Ravens vs. Buffalo Bills Showdown
Timestamp: [06:35]
The conversation shifts to dissecting the Ravens' performance, noting their usual dynamic play led by Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. However, key mistakes, including turnovers and a significant drop by Mark Andrews, marred their efforts.
Despite Baltimore's strong play-calling and big plays, the Bills' disciplined approach, with only one sack and one penalty, was pivotal in securing their victory.
3. The Rise of the Philadelphia Eagles: Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter
Timestamp: [07:00]
Colin transitions to discussing the Philadelphia Eagles, emphasizing the significant impact of Saquon Barkley and Jalen Carter. Barkley’s performance has placed him among the greatest running backs, alongside legends like Walter Payton and Barry Sanders.
Jalen Carter is lauded for his defensive prowess, drawing comparisons to Reggie White and Aaron Donald. His leadership on the defensive line has been instrumental in the Eagles' success.
The synergy between Barkley’s offensive contributions and Carter’s defensive dominance has transformed the Eagles into a formidable playoff contender.
4. Jayden Daniels: An Unprecedented Rookie Quarterback
Timestamp: [17:26]
The spotlight turns to Jayden Daniels of the Washington team, whose rookie season has defied expectations. Daniels has demonstrated exceptional poise, avoiding turnovers and excelling against blitzes—a rare feat for a rookie quarterback.
Despite early-season struggles, Daniels’ performance in the latter half of the season showcases his potential to lead Washington deep into the playoffs.
Daniels' ability to maintain composure and make strategic decisions under pressure sets him apart from his peers, drawing comparisons to seasoned veterans.
5. Kansas City Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes: Navigating Playoffs and Officials
Timestamp: [38:32]
Colin addresses the Kansas City Chiefs' journey to the AFC Championship, focusing on Patrick Mahomes' interactions with referees and officials. He critiques the NFL's protective stance towards quarterbacks, suggesting it hinders fair play.
Mahomes' ability to leverage rules to his advantage is likened to athletes like Messi and Ronaldo, enhancing his team's competitive edge.
The discussion underscores the Chiefs' disciplined approach, emphasizing minimal penalties and turnovers as key factors in their playoff success.
6. Detroit Lions' Coaching Turmoil and Future Prospects
Timestamp: [29:35]
The conversation shifts to the Detroit Lions, highlighting the potential departure of key coordinators Ben Johnson and Aaron Glenn. Colin expresses concern over the team's ability to maintain continuity and competitiveness amidst these changes.
Dan Campbell, Detroit’s head coach, addresses the situation, emphasizing the search for qualified replacements without rushing the process.
Colin draws parallels to other teams that have faltered following coaching changes, cautioning against in-house promotions that may lack the requisite expertise.
7. Predictions and Concluding Insights
Timestamp: [46:25]
As the episode nears its conclusion, Colin shares his predictions for the upcoming playoff games, favoring the Buffalo Bills and Philadelphia Eagles as frontrunners. He anticipates a formidable showdown between these teams and the Kansas City Chiefs, emphasizing the strategic advantages Buffalo holds as both a disciplined team and a fan-favorite.
He also touches upon the broader NFL landscape, noting the rise of mobile quarterbacks and the shifting power dynamics within the league.
