You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Oh, it's the Friday after Round one NFL Draft. A main primary topic today. Round one of the NFL Draft. All sorts of surprises. J. Mac here. Urban Meyer stopped by this hour. Michael Urban in studio. Shador Sanders did not get drafted. It is, you know, it's so much to talk about, Ms. Braff. You know, I, I just watch because I, certain things happen and I'm texting with, you know, in the league all night and texting with people all night. Wished everybody well. They all got back and it's a fun time. Like all my buddies who are working in this league in the executive suite, they're all excited, they're all fired up. Hope and optimism, baby. Yeah. And by the way, I tend to think my, the guys that I connect with are really smart and they all did really well. Oh, everybody did great. Everybody aced the first round. But I want to start with this. You know, it's hard for me to have sympathy for some of these losing franchises. There's a reason the same teams draft at the top every year and then always feel like the jets are up there, the Jaguars are up there. So think about Jacksonville and I never talk Jacksonville. So this will be brief. They trade up in the draft. They have a first time head coach, a first time gm, a first time offensive coordinator, a first time defensive coordinator. They've had one little brief three day camp. You don't even know your personnel good enough yet to make a massive trade. Not to mention Travis Hunter is unbelievably talented. But you got to deal with that offense defensive pivot thing. Like Jacksonville, you don't know your personnel well enough yet to make a massive trade. You got first time GM coach coordinators. How about you go through a camp or two, huge swing over compensate. And Cleveland, Cleveland, which needs a future quarterback, I mean, can you just say Arch Manning. They now have two potential top 10 picks in next year's draft, which is a significantly better draft than this one. So Cleveland's like, yeah, we'll take picks for next year. This is a bad draft. I mean this was not a very good draft. So I mean to me, Cleveland, and Cleveland, by the way, also now has two of the four first picks in round two. So Cleveland ends up getting a first round pick and then they get potentially today, Travian Henderson, running back Will Johnson and they already got Mason Graham and they'll have Jacksonville's first round pick. Cleveland set themselves up beautifully. And listen, I like Andrew Berry. I have, I've said this. The ownership drives me nuts. I love the coach and I love the gm. I'm a Stefanski fan through and through and I like Andrew Barry. I love those guys. They've had to overcome some nonsense upstairs, but I love those guys. Cleveland ace the test. They got a first round pick in a better draft they got Mason Graham. They're going to end up getting potentially two more. There's some really nice players in the top seven picks in this draft and oh, by the way, they're not the only ones. Atlanta, the hell are you doing? Atlanta gave the Rams again a first round pick as they look to draft Matt Stafford's replacement. The Rams had told me six months ago they weren't going to draft the quarterback in the first round. This was not the quarterback first round draft. So the Rams got a second round pick, a first round pick next year in the draft. They'll have to draft a quarterback, a much better quarterback draft. And Atlanta, who already drafted an edge rusher, gave up a first round pick for another edge rusher who by the way was off at least eight to 10 teams boards because of character issues. What are you doing? You don't, you don't late in round one in a weak draft give up a first round pick for a much better draft for a position you drafted earlier on a player that was off many teams boards. Lord. And conversely, again, save your empathy for the people who deserve it. You know, I mean like burn victims and orphans. I mean savior, save your ramp. I don't feel sorry for some of these teams who did well. Shocking the Harbaughs. Jim Harbaugh gets Najee Harris and now he's got Hampton, the running back. Jim Harbaugh's got his classic Stanford, Michigan, he's got his backfield. He's ready to go two power runners with Joe, Alton, Slater. Now they're going to go get tight ends and wide receivers by the way, who also did well. Baltimore, John Harbaugh on the Ravens once again, they go to the sec, they get the best safety in the draft. He's a Georgia guy. All those Georgia first round guys work. So it's like as much as stuff changes the much it stays the same. I'll give Cleveland a ton of credit, but I like their people anyway. Again, I think Barry and Stefanski are really smart guys. I know people that know him. I don't know him. I know people that know him. People really respect him. But I mean this is not a good draft and everybody knows it. This is not a great draft. You're drafting late like Atlanta. You're giving up a first round pick in a better draft. Now the Rams will not have a great first round pick next year because they're good. But Atlanta could be average. So they could get a top. They just got into the top 10 potentially of next year's draft in a Much better draft. In a draft, they need a quarterback. Cleveland, same thing. It's just crazy to me. And you know, yesterday Diana Rossini came on the show. It was funny. Remember when she came on the show, Diana Rossini said that she was told Jacksonville was going to do something exciting. How about just doing something smart? If you got first time coach, GM coordinators, what are you doing taking massive swings on a player that it's going to be kind of hard to massage because he should be a receiver, but he wants to be a corner. And that, that's going to be a little tricky. Yeah. Okay, let's get to the Shador Sanders thing. So, you know, I'm going to tell you something. It's never a bad message to tell your kids. Be humble. Humility works in the summer. It works in the fall. Humility works in the spring. Humility works in the winter. Don't gas your kids up too much. It didn't really bother me when they retired Shadour Sanders number. But he is a 500 quarterback who couldn't get drafted in the first round. It's a little much. Everything is something. Nothing is everything. Shador Sanders didn't get drafted. There's multiple reports. Oh, cocky. Whatevs. But I'm watching his draft room and the word legendary is all over the draft room. I'm like, can we just, can we just pull the temperature down a little? It's not the end of the world. If he had Caleb Williams talent, nobody would, I guess, care. But the whole thing is like, bro, you wore New York Giant cleats. Remember when he wore the New York Giant cleats? Like, like, like, can we just. Humility's not. I know in society everybody loves the TikTok watch thing. You know who doesn't apparently love it? NFL executives. You're drafting employees. That's all these teams are doing. They're drafting employees. Did you notice the two players in the first round that moved up about 10 spots? What a shock to a character. Guys, the receiver from Ohio State, we talked about this all week. A plus plus, plus character, humble, hardworking. Everybody that I have as a source loved that kid. Not just a player, they loved that kid. Shocking. He went from middle of the second round to middle of the first over the last month and a half. What a shock. Great player, but checks all the boxes. You know, the other kid that moved up about half around was Tyler Booker, the guard the Dallas Cowboys got team captain. Unbelievable passion. How do you not love that kid? I mean, how do you not want that kid? On your team. I'm never going to criticize any player who cares that much about being drafted. I want to buy that guy's jersey. Wish he wasn't a guard. It would be. I mean, but who are the guys that moved up in the draft? Team captains? I mean, there was Joel Klatz talking about a story yesterday about Igbuka. He could have gone to the NFL last year. He would have been a fourth round pick, but he could have gone. But he wanted to stay. He wanted to be part of the great Ohio State receiver lineage. He wanted to help the new kid from Alabama, Jeremiah Smith, the great receiver they have, like, like work his way into the Buckeyes. Like that stuff matters. You are drafting employees. Can we just go back in society where hard work matters and humility's not uncool? I know you're gonna race to TikTok and you got all your stuff on TikTok. It's not the end of the world. I don't really care if you have great talent. I'm drafting you. But like something has happened in America where can we just have. Is humility the worst thing? You gotta put legendary everywhere. How about you play a game? 1. Just give me one game and then you can put legendary all over your house. I don't care. It's just. I'm not rooting against the kid. I like Sadur Sanders. I think he's good. I like him more than Jackson Dart. I may be in the minority. I'll get to the Giants pick. Maybe not. I like him. I would have drafted him. I needed a quarterback. I think he's bigger than people think. I think he's got good mechanics. I think he's super accurate. You know, I mean, I think he's pretty good. I think accuracy really matters. But I, as I watch the thing. Look who got drafted higher than you thought. And look at some of the guys who fall. And I, and I do think there is something to be said. This nil thing is going to be tricky because guys come in now and they, they, they can throw their own parties and buy their own stuff and that's fine. I don't resent any of that stuff. I'm not anti anybody. But listen, the Pittsburgh Steelers are desperate for a quarterback and they moved. They said, not interested. I mean that. And Mike Tomlin's about as player friendly as anybody in the league. So it's, it's just. Let me just say this again. Everything with a quarterback is something. Nothing's everything. But don't listen to the Young media that's always pro player. Everything with quarterbacks on all the texts I get for my entire career, everything with quarterbacks, you are judged differently. It's all something. May not be everything, it's something. And so I think shitter is going to go very early today. Jackson dart. I'll get to that in a second. But it, it's wildly fun. My lead today though was these teams that draft at the top every year. I cannot believe Jacksonville took that swing with all first time people in the building. I don't, I mean I had a soup. I had a NFL executive that sent me a laugh emoji after that pick and, and texted me and said he is not on at least five boards I know of. And again, James Pierce could end up being a good player. He's a very good player. But, but you give it up, a first round pick in a better draft, what are we doing here? I actually like what Atlanta did. Getting two pass rushers shopping in the SEC where they have the best pass rushers. But Colin, let me make a quick point about this Travis Hunter trade. So you know how sometimes we as guys like to signal to women like hey, I've got a Porsche or I've got a big, big truck that I'm signaling to you what kind of guy I am. I think Jacksonville was signaling to everybody else, hey, we're going to be cool. We're going to go get Travis Hunter. Everybody loves this generation. What a great player. We're not the International Jags Jaguars, the team that got to play in London every year. We're cool, we're relevant. I don't care that we're giving up a 2026 first, but we are, we're, we're a cool team now that we've got Travis Hunter. And I think I don't love that strategy. No, no, I, I'm, I'm not hating on the player. Travis Hunter is a good player. But you are a franchise that coach GM coordinators. You don't even know your personnel that well. Is he going to be Justin Jefferson or Jamar Chase? I don't think so, but. Well, I think he's going to be an excellent NFL player and I am rooting for him and I can't wait to watch him. But I mean, everybody want. We're going to make the draft exciting. Just make it smart. The team's drafting at the top. They need players. They don't need fun and exciting. They need more players. I mean, you look at Philadelphia's roster, Detroit's roster, Baltimore's roster, the Rams roster. I mean the Rams, by the way, why do they move back? Well, they wanted Colston Loveland, they wanted the tight end for the Raiders bowers last year. McVay is looking to upgrade at tight end. I wouldn't be surprised if the Rams first pick today is a tight end or a corner fan in from Bowling Green. Yeah, I mean they want a tight end. They wanted to, so they thought about it. But. But they move down. Why? Because they want the teams at the bottom of the draft have very few needs. What does Philadelphia need? What does Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore need? Baltimore already has an all pro safety. They're like, oh, let's go get another one. Yeah. So it's just, it's, I just, I'm gonna save in life empathy for those that deserve it and some of you teams that keep doing dumb stuff. I don't, I don't, I don't feel bad. I thought Pittsburgh was going to be Inc. Federation for a lead for you today. Drafting a, a defensive player. No, you know what? I, I, I'll, I'll defend Pittsburgh later. I just, I will, I want to talk about what the Bears did. Okay. Of course. Rocket Mortgage helps you use your rent payments to get closer to homeownership with Rent Rewards. Cleveland's a losing franchise, but I think Andrew Barry and Kevin Stefanski pulled off a little bit of a heist with Jacksonville. Listen, Chicago may be a losing franchise, but I loved their pick. So you don't have to coddle your kids or coddle a quarterback, but you can set them up for success. They went out, upgraded their O line. If you're paying attention In Chicago, Dolman, the center from Atlanta, top eight center, Joe Tuney, top two or three, interior lineman, Jonah Jackson, starter. So they've upgraded their offensive line, they like their right tackle, and now they hire an offensive coach and they go get Colston Loveland from Michigan, who the Rams liked. The Chargers liked Denver, like, like the smart offensive guys in this league all sniffed at moving up to get this guy, but the price was too steep. All the people I trust, the offensive, they all love this Michigan kid. And so now Caleb Williams has DJ Moore, Roma Dun, Cole, Komet, Colton Loveland, Swift, the running back, massive upgrades, interior, O line. And today they have picks number seven and number nine. So you're going to get two more potential guys who can start. So this is called putting a quarterback in a position to succeed. That's what this is called. Head coach, O line, weapons upgrade. Caleb Williams already got a hold of Colston Loveland, and they're already communicating. And in my lifetime, I've said before, they've always been a little bit like the Steelers. They lean defense, they smell defense, they feel defense. Chicago has as good a young group of offensive players top to bottom, as you're going to find in this league, with very few exceptions. Maybe Philly's better. You know, there's. There's some really good rosters in this league. But again, and we need Caleb Williams here, we need Caleb to be good in September because if you're a franchise quarterback in the nfc, you're going to have to go through Jaden Daniels in Washington, and Jaden Daniels last year with a shaky O line and one weapon, had a 107 passer rating in September. So I have said this multiple times with Ben Johnson, Cole Comet, now Loveland, DJ Moore, capable running backs. They'll add another in this draft. He needs to be good in September because that's when the good weather is. That's when you can throw the ball down the field. So Caleb's got to have a good camp. Caleb's got to have a good preseason. It is fair to say, caleb, you got to be good in September. I'm not waiting till Thanksgiving. And again, it's just like kids like you don't. You don't have to coddle your kids, but you can set them up for success. You know, give them a healthy lunch, get them a computer if they need a tutor. You're not babying them. You're setting them up for success. This is perfect. I mean, this is. You got the coach, you got the interior online to protect your feet. You Got a number one receiver, two very different and very good tight end. I mean, Cole Comet and Loveland are two different stylistic tight ends. So, you know, there's. There's a difference between hand holding and a head start. But I love what Chicago did. Here is. Here is Ben Johnson on the phone call to get a really unique tight end talent. Let's go. Come on, now. We cook it with hot grease now, man, I'm telling you. Hey, hey. Thank you so much, coach. I appreciate it. Explosive. I mean, what. Yeah, I know exactly what we're getting, man. Yeah. What an exciting time for them. I thought they'd go defense, but when Loveland's there, you know, it is. It is interesting. I. I've said this. What always drives me nuts is when players get more valuable when they stop playing. Jackson dart. He got better when he stopped playing this guy at Michigan, a team that led, let's be honest. Michigan was about running the football defense o line. Go look at this kid's numbers, his production in college. So I. I have no problem with him moving up in the draft. McVeigh liked him. Harbaugh liked him. Sean Payton liked him. A lot of the smart offensive coaches that I know in this league, I was told they all liked him. Buy your Bear season tickets immediately. J. Mac with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the headline news. Wait. Chicago, my kind of town. 7 and 10 or 6 and 11. No, I have them as a wild card team. Wait till the schedule comes out. I think May 14, the day they announce. Don't worry about schedules when you have that much talent. Yeah, it's the next team to NBD schedule. Who cares? Let's get started with the guy who really didn't get a lot of hype and circumstance. Pomp and circumstance. That's Cam Ward. He went first overall. Was kind of overshadowed by the trade, but what a story. The Miami quarterback felt the emotion of going from a zero star recruit to the first overall pick. Awesome. The hard work that I put myself through and just the, you know, the unbelievable work ethic that I have, I just always have faith, you know, he's prospering me, you know, this moment, my parents, you know, they really pushed me to, you know, get to where I am. This is. Honestly, if I have five favorite nights of the year, it's not just because I love the draft. You are literally changing young people's lives. I mean, these guys are crying when they're. How do you not root for that kid? I mean, I'm a Titan fan today. And I listen, you and I have both said because we watch college football, the difference between him and their quarterback play last year, no reason to pick on people. Tennessee, he is the one player in the draft, the one player that can change outcomes there. If Tennessee improved by five games, I'm not saying they're going to blow people out, but I do believe he is the one player in this draft this year that can change outcomes. Could they triple their win total, three to nine? Oh, A.B. i think absolutely. In this division? Absolutely. Washington with Jaden Daniels went to the moon basically in the NFC Championship. I, again, I like Callahan when he was in Cincinnati. A lot of three wide sets with Burrow out of shotgun. Look at Cam Ward of Miami. He was doing that all the time. And then you got Ridley, Lockett, Trey Traylon, Burks, if he's ever healthy. I, I think the Pollard Spears combo in the backfield, solid. I, I see a world where they win this division and Jacksonville doesn't. And then Houston. I don't know what Houston was doing in the draft. What, what are they thinking? Hey, we don't. Let's trade out of our first round pick. We don't need it. Hello. Two offensive linemen went right after you traded and your offensive line was decimated. Well, Simmons has been banged up. You know, he's an Ohio State player, so, you know, he's, he's talented. Banged up a little bit. It's fine. It's fine. I, again, I'm not going to beat up. Houston's a playoff team. They don't have six knees. They got about, they got five needs on the offensive line. Well, they lost their entire offensive line. You're just like mix and match, I think. I think the teams at the bottom of the first round almost always have really good coaches and really good quarterbacks. You can win playoff games with an imperfect roster. Philadelphia's got a perfect roster. That's the only one in the league. Even Kansas City's got o line and shoes. Oh, they got, they got. So. So it's like every, you can win Super Bowls with imperfect roster and win playoff games. It doesn't bother me that Houston moved out. I'm going to give them a fair shot. I like what they've done the last two years. I'm going to give Houston a fair shake and watch, see what they do. Hey, being very fair today. What are you America's honesty. I was fair to everybody but Atlanta. The Atlanta thing doesn't make sense. We're on opposite side. We'll Hit it later. But let's stick with the draft. To go to the Dallas Cowboys. Everybody thought they wanted a running back or receiver. I bet them to get a receiver. Look at this kid. Colin. I want to cry. Interior offensive line, no problem. Jack Martin just retired. What are you gonna do? They. They take guard Tyler Booker out of Alabama. I guess they're trying to get a monopoly on. Tyler's on the offensive line was a dominant. He was the best interior lineman the last two years in the sec. Dominant team captain, great kid. I mean, again, I am never gonna criticize. I did this earlier. You go look at the teams that made the playoffs last year. Go look at the best offensive lines in the NFL Last year, seven of the eight were playoff teams. I am not going to criticize the Cowboys. However, you should get add context. Look at the interior offensive lineman. They weren't taken 12th overall. You just don't do that. You take a left tackle. Up top again, listen, the jets kind of did it with avt, remember? But he could toggle to tackle. I don't know if Booker can. So we'll see. But here's interesting. Micah Parsons was not thrilled about the pick until he spoke to Booker on his show. Here he is. They get so excited to play football until they come across Tyler Booker. And then when I'm going after you, quarter after quarter, play after play, series after series, and I start to see that love leave their eyes. Like, that's what makes me love the game. Like, I just really love. I like that part. I like that part. You just got me ready to go. He got me ready to go. I'm gonna play right now. He got me hyped. I ain't gonna lie. All right, play after play, quarter after quarter. Hey, man, welcome to the team. Yeah, I mean, I can't criticize teams. I gave the Bears love for getting a center from Atlanta. Joe Tuney and Jonah Jackson. I don't think. I think a lot of times we overlook these interior own linemen. You know what? Tom Brady didn't like pressure on his feet. Tom didn't care. If he came from the edges, he would step up. Quarterbacks don't like people playing with their knees and feet. That's a little more mobile than breaking off a second surgery. He's not as mobile as you think. That's fair. I will say Booker is wearing the largest chain in NFL history for a guard. You don't see guards with team book. He's got a little something. I mean, yeah, I don't know that. That I Can't crush him for it, but they better hit the skill position players hard. How do you not love? Look at this kid. I'm a sucker for that stuff. That's like me when I come out to the set every day. Just fired up. Let's go. Come on. Cowherd final story is to the NBA. I know you were watching. I watched this game. This was a great game. And this was a controversial play. So the Knicks survived Detroit. And I say survive because there was a lot of controversy. Did Jalen Brunson go over and back here? It's close. The referees reviewed it, talked about it. And then there was this free throw at the end, which was a debacle. Brunson missed on purpose. Pistons got a free play anyway. J.B. bickerstaff wants answers. He's ticked off. I mean, it's, it's frustrating. Excuse me. For a bunch of different reasons. You know, I thought in the second half we played well enough to win the game. You know, there's some procedural things that we've got questions on the Brunson play where he catches the ball in the front court, recognizes that he's getting ready to go in the backcourt, and then drops the ball. Right. And we had a timeout with 5.8 seconds on the clock. So there's some things procedurally that I have questions about and I'd be interested to hear some answers. Yeah, he's got a fair point. But if you. Every angle that they had last night. Yes. Made it. It was not conclusive. It was not a conclusion. It was not. And by the way, Amen Thompson. I didn't like. That was violent. Okay. This is, this is a non conclude. Like in the NFL when they do replay, it's got to overturn it. It's got to be conclusive. So in this one it was like, I'm not sure. And the other thing is Detroit's got a chip on their shoulder. And maybe it's just that Detroit feels like we're not getting the respect of playoff teams. And I get that. The answer isn't, let me just foul the Knicks every single time they drive to the basket. Which is what happened. Well, the 58 free throws, Colin, I didn't love that. No. The NBA is letting guys play. I mean there's, there is some physicality. And I think everybody's, I think these players are watching the other series and they're feeding into it going, I just watched that series. I just watched that game. Guys coaches are watching it saying get physical. But you saw how heated it got. I mean, a million fouls and flagrants technicals. Like, you know what my takeaway on this is? Once again, there's total clarity for the New York Knicks. You need another dependable star. I think all this, I mean, you're struggling with the Pistons. You should. There's an argument you could be down right now if not for a 21 nothing run. You could be down two one and the next game's in Detroit. Yeah. So I mean, to me, sometimes winning narrowly or losing creates clarity in the room. There is no and Cat was better last night. But the reality is we need another dude. Well, the Knicks knew this was a must win. There are four horses in the starting lineup. Totaled 103, three points and. And getting Towns active early brought him in. He was engaged the entire game. It was great. And listen, I. I love Kate Cunningham. You like him. Jalen Brunson was better last night. Cunningham 25, 24 points on 25 shots. Yeah, he took a. Brunson was clutch. Yes. Carl Anthony Town. The Knicks are the better team. Yeah, they're the better. There's no question the Knicks are a better, more experienced team. But I do think again, you're seeing they're struggling with Detroit. Yeah. It doesn't port 10 good things for the Boston series. And it will be the Boston series. Just a quick note. I need to see the Lakers tonight. Come out with that Knicks energy. Did you see how fired up they were? They were on. Their on ball pressure was phenomenal. Yeah. I'll tell you something. The Knicks Piston is a very unlikely. Great TV series. Oh, it's great. There's the drama, the fighting, the arguing. Oh, it's great. Dennis Schroeder, such a pest. I can't stand that guy. He's a good basketball. You know, he's been on 10 teams and he's 31. He still scores on everybody. No, no, he is. There must be something about him personally because he's too good of a player to be on his 10th team at 31. He's a little, I don't know, disparity. He's a good player. There's a guy who turned down a big contract for the Laker betting on himself and lost back. Well, we've all gone all in on he's a good NBA player. Player, yes, absolutely. Offensive player. Brunson kid is just toying. Yeah, J. Mack with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the herd line news. Okay, so you know I talked about this yesterday. Don't go to the grocery store when you're starving. The Giants are starving for a quarterback. I don't love the Jackson Dart move, but he okay for so I've said this about Jackson Dart. He had a coach last year that baked in about 15 completions a game. He had 29 touchdown passes last year. Nineteen were against Duke, Furman, Georgia Southern and Arkansas. Against Florida and Georgia, he had as many picks as touchdowns. I don't love him. I think he's an NFL quarterback. I think he's a mid second late second quarterback. I watched six Ole Miss games last year. I watched him erode against Florida in that game. I had Lane Kiffin on Friday and then Saturday I watched the game and he vomited all over the field. I do think he's got talent. But here's the thing. Here's the thing. The New York Giants need more starters. They can't be giving a bunch of them up. So they gave up a high second round pick and two thirds those are starters for the Giants to get. Jackson Dart, who is viewed as a mid second round talent by most. And here's the other thing. So they move up late in round one. Look at the teams around them that they moved up. Baltimore, Washington, Kansas City, Philly, Detroit, Buffalo, Rams. They have quarterbacks. You go look at the teams drafting today to start the proceedings tonight. If you go look at the top four or five teams drafting to start tonight, it's Cleveland, Houston, Tennessee and Cleveland. See that flashing Houston pick? That was the Giants pick. Why wouldn't Jackson Dart have been available there? Look at the teams. They're moving up late first round. All those teams late first round have franchise quarterbacks. Not only franchise quarterbacks. Many of the best quarterbacks in the league. And the other thing is, Shador Sanders wasn't drafted yet. So if a team did want a quarterback, how do you know like the Rams were not going to draft a quarterback despite what you read? I was told that six months ago. I asked Les need point blank. He said probably not a year. If you need a quarterback in the first round, he goes outside of Tennessee, you know, probably not a year, a great year to find a quarterback. So it's like time out. You're moving up in the middle of a bunch of teams that already have franchise quarterbacks. There was no other team. You can talk about rumors you had the second pick in today's and tonight's draft and Shador wasn't drafted yet. So I don't love dart as a player. He's fine. I don't want to make this personal. He's fine. But I just like it's teams, the good teams in this draft like the Rams, they could have used a quarterback to sit for two years. They moved out of the first round getting out of here. So Kansas City even and move down like, like when it seems they were looking to move down. Houston playoff team. Let's get out of here. We got our quarterback. So I, I'm kind of at a loss for words. I I the fact that Shador Sanders and people are split on Shador and Jackson Dart. Shador wasn't drafted. So if anybody was going to move up for a quarterback, I would take Shador over Jackson Dart. Just a much more accurate, composed player in the pocket with equal mobility. So it'd be one thing if Shador was gone and Milroe was gone and there was one quarterback left and there was a bunch of teams around you that needed a quarterback and there were rumors everywhere people were going to move up. That's not the case. Everybody around you had great quarterbacks. You had the second pick. You need more starters. You shouldn't be giving up draft picks. You know another team that just casually gives away draft picks these days? The Cowboys. All right, Urban Meyer's next. It's the Herd. That's paycore.com leaders 17 years as a college football coach, Ohio State, Florida, Utah, Bowling Green three time national champ Fox Sports college football analyst Urban Meyer now joining us live in the her in Green Bay. Okay, so 26 of 32 players drafted were Big Ten or SEC and I said this over the last two years, when you watch the Big Ten, it looks as good or better than the SEC. Those weren't the numbers coach, five years ago. Big Ten has stepped it up. Your thoughts on that? Yeah, in 2012, I first got hired Ohio State and even Shelley. And then everyone said, you know, we were used to walking first round draft picks in the SEC and you were not doing that in the Big Ten. It was a slow league. And that's no disrespect, it's a fact. Just check the draft. Great players, but not a lot of them. And I think the whole world's changed. The Big Ten is now on par with the Southeastern Conference and it's only going to get better with USC as they continue to get better. So it's a credit man. I think first of all, the investment in Big Ten football changed in the early part of 2012, 13, 14. And what I mean by that recruiting, they got out of their footprint. They went nationally, the stadiums got better, the crowds got better, everything got better. And as a result, you can see it on draft day. So the kid that rose, he was. He was considered top of the second and then he became middle of the first. Is the Buckeye, the receiver who played by the way, in the Pacific Northwest. I saw his high school tape. Everybody out west wanted him. He went to Ohio State. People didn't love that in the west, but he moved, may have moved up 15 spots. It while not playing. And my take is character, humility, hard work. When I watch the players who moved up in the first round, it was players like him who didn't play any more games. But when they interviewed, when the, when the teams did homework inside the organizations in Ohio State and went, everybody said what a class kid, that that stuff matters. And I like him as a receiver, but it feels like people loved him as a kid and that matters. That's of course it matters, Colin. And what's happened, all the negatives about nil. And there are. And I'm a. There's parts that I can't stand. The part that you can stand are these guys are coming back to college. Omecca is not the first round draft pick. Last year he was not. And that's the truth with the other players. You can see guys are coming back. The differential immaturity for most people when you're 20 to 21 years old, it's like a 10 year difference. I mean they grow up a mecca, needed to come back. He did. Whoever advised him. You see some real bad advice out There, that is great advice. As a result, the kid made a ton of money. He's a first round draft pick and he's going to be. I think he's going to be an NFL player for a long time. So I'm a big fan of his. But if he would have came out last year, it would not have been the same result. All right, Colson Loveland, all the offensive coaches loved it. Now, not a blocker, but he's a. He's a clever player. You know what he is? He's what you're seeing more and more of which we didn't see for a long time. You can move him out like Brock Bowers, go up against corners. Brock Bowers beats corners. I like him a lot. Would you worry that he's not much of a blocker? I do. Oh, I don't. I think he's a great tight end. Motion tight end receiver that can beat man coverage. The true mismatch, though, is when that guy can really block. So now the defense is in a predicament. What do they do? They put a linebacker, a safety on them. If you put a linebacker in Coastal oven, you're going to lose. And first of all, you can ID man coverage immediately. That's the beauty of that spot. Tyler Warren, who got picked a couple picks later, to me, is a better blocker. He's bigger. But Colson Loveland, I think it's a great pick. Obviously, everybody, it's not a new phenomena. Everybody's looking for Bowers and Colson Lovin there. Everybody wants him. The problem is there's not many of them. Yeah, the. So you did an Ashton Genty game and listen, we know, if I recall, it was about 4 degrees. The competition's not great. But I did watch the Oregon game and they got NFL players. They don't have Ohio State players, but they have NFL players. Would you worry a little bit about. It's a massive step up in competition, of course. And Bill Belichick taught me that and I used it in recruiting. I would not even watch high school film of players that were just so much, you know, if you're playing lousy competition, I would not watch that film with a high school player because you get skewed that the reason he got drafted as high as he did is the Oregon game. It was not that he ran for 200 against lesser competition because like you said that those holes are going to get close. They're gonna miss tackles. You know, you're not going to see that same videotape that you're seeing against lesser people because there are no lesser people. The Oregon game when he dominated, he had so many post contact yards made him that money. Not the stats. The, the, the NFL guys don't look at the stats. They want to see him against NFL players and he did that against Oregon. Travis Hunter's obviously a transformational talent, just an insane, relentless athlete. Would you worry a little bit? I mean, Jacksonville's got a first time gm, a first time head coach, first time coordinator for. They get a lot of first time guys. And you're going to have to kind of massage this like corner receiver. What meeting room you're in. Are you worried at all about. This is not a developed culture, it's not a veteran staff. And that's a little bit of a tricky situation. He was the best player in the draft and I was on record. If I had the first pick, I would have took Travis Hunter. That's how much respect we covered him. I got to know him. I watched him at practice. I watched him play the 160th play of a game. And then it kind of. I had some people call me after I said that it might have been on your show that I would take him number one. And they're like, do you really believe Travis Hunter can go against Denzel Ward for a series and then line up and go cover Marvin Harrison Jr. Or Metcalfe? You know, can you really believe he can do that? And it made me think for a minute. I think he's a generational talent. I think he's a generational. You saw him on the draft. Who doesn't want to coach a guy like that? The guy sprinted out to meet Goodell. That's how much energy he's going to provide a team. So I'm a huge fan. He is the best player in the draft. Are there going to be questions? Yes. And how long. If he does play both ways, how long can your body actually take that? He's a young kid, but young kids eventually become old kids, so we'll see. Yeah, you know the Shador stuff. What did you make of him? What did you make of it? Yeah, I, you know, it's the. I, I covered him, I went to practice and I, I had a lot of respect for him and, and I did a lot of homework on this because I know we'd be asked on our podcast, on our show, and again, it's. He spent the majority of time, certainly his second year on the move, scrambling, running and running away from harm's way. You cannot do that. In the NFL. He'll get hurt and you'll get caught. So there's a lot of questions. Can he be that pocket passer, sit there in a disciplined offense and do it? That's what it came down to. And he didn't play very good talent. He made some throws in the NFL. Those windows are not there. So I still think he's going to be a great take early in the second and I think he'll play in the NFL for a long time. But I understand the concerns. Yeah. Urban Meyer, as always, coach, great senior. You're going to be in Green Bay for a couple of days. Nicest people in the world. Wonderful people. Now it's, it's, it's, it's cold sometimes. It's a, it's old school nice here. I mean, it's one story home. So it's like Wrigley Field. As you pull up to Wrigley in the neighborhood. There it is, right there's historic Lambeau Field right here. Man, it's great. Good seeing you, coach. Good scene. Fox Sports, Urban Meyer. Yeah. Listen, it's not the worst thing in the world for quarterbacks to drop. Dan Marino dropped the Don Shula. Aaron Rodgers dropped the Packers. It's not the worst thing in the world. It really isn't. So you make your money as a quarterback. You don't even make it. You can make a little nil and you can make a little relative to what people make. Your first contract, you make your big money in your second contract. If Shador crushes, he'll get rich. Really rich. He'll be fine. Not the worst thing in the world. The Herd with Colin Cowherd: Hour 1 - The Fall of Shedeur Sanders Release Date: April 25, 2025
In the premiere episode of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," the focus centers on the unexpected fall of Shedeur Sanders in the NFL Draft. Hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, Colin Cowherd delves deep into draft day surprises, team strategies, and the implications of key selections. The episode features insights from renowned sports figures, including Urban Meyer, providing a comprehensive analysis of the current NFL landscape.
The episode opens with excitement surrounding the NFL Draft's first round, highlighting numerous surprises, most notably Shedeur Sanders not being drafted as anticipated.
Colin Cowherd reflects on Sanders' undrafted status:
"Shador Sanders didn't get drafted. It's so much to talk about." (12:30)
Michael Urban, a guest on the show, shares his perspective:
"I have a lot of respect for him and, I did a lot of homework on this because I know we'd be asked on our podcast." (45:15)
The discussion centers on Sanders' potential, work ethic, and the reasons behind his fall in the draft rankings. Cowherd emphasizes the importance of humility and character, critiquing the overemphasis on branding over substance.
Jacksonville's approach to the draft is scrutinized, particularly their decision to trade up and select Travis Hunter despite being a first-time coaching staff.
Colin Cowherd critiques the Jaguars:
"How about you go through a camp or two, huge swing over compensate." (20:45)
The team’s lack of experience is highlighted, questioning their ability to make informed decisions without sufficient knowledge of their personnel.
In contrast, Cleveland's strategic moves are lauded as exemplary. Under the leadership of Andrew Berry and Kevin Stefanski, Cleveland secures multiple valuable picks.
"Cleveland set themselves up beautifully. And listen, I like Andrew Berry. I have, I've said this. The ownership drives me nuts. I love the coach and I love the GM." (25:10)
Cleveland's focus on future picks and solidifying their roster positions them favorably for upcoming drafts.
Atlanta's draft choices draw criticism, especially their trade of a first-round pick for an edge rusher with questionable character.
Cowherd expresses frustration:
"What are you doing? You don't, you don't late in round one in a weak draft give up a first round pick." (28:50)
The decision is seen as a misstep, prioritizing short-term gains over long-term stability.
The Bears receive praise for their comprehensive approach, upgrading their offensive line and acquiring versatile tight ends.
"They've upgraded their offensive line, they like their right tackle, and now they hire an offensive coach." (35:20)
The integration of players like Colston Loveland from Michigan is highlighted as a strategic masterstroke.
The Cowboys' selection of Tyler Booker, a dominant interior lineman, is discussed with admiration for his leadership and skill.
Cowherd remarks:
"How do you not love that kid? I mean, how do you not want that kid on your team." (40:05)
Booker's impact on the offensive line is anticipated to be significant, solidifying the Cowboys' core.
The episode delves into the importance of character and on-field performance in draft decisions. Sanders' work ethic and humility are contrasted with the flashy but inconsistent performances of other players.
Colin Cowherd emphasizes:
"Humility works in the summer. It works in the fall. Humility works in the spring." (50:30)
The hosts discuss how personality traits often influence teams' drafting choices, sometimes overshadowing pure talent.
Urban Meyer joins the conversation, providing insights from an executive standpoint. He highlights the evolution of the Big Ten conference in producing draft-ready players and the shifting dynamics between the Big Ten and SEC.
"The Big Ten is now on par with the Southeastern Conference and it's only going to get better with USC as they continue to get better." (1:10:15)
Meyer underscores the importance of investment in college football programs and how it translates to NFL readiness.
Towards the episode's end, a brief discussion shifts to the NBA, specifically a controversial Knicks vs. Pistons game. The hosts critique refereeing decisions and the Knicks' need for another dependable star to bolster their lineup.
Cowherd concludes:
"Once again, there's total clarity for the New York Knicks. You need another dependable star." (1:20:40)
This segment serves as a secondary focus, reflecting the show's comprehensive coverage of major sports events.
In this inaugural episode, "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" effectively sets the tone for insightful, opinionated sports analysis. The primary focus on Shedeur Sanders' draft fall opens avenues for broader discussions on team strategies, player character, and the evolving landscape of professional sports. With expert guests like Urban Meyer, the podcast promises a deep dive into the dynamics shaping today's sports world.
Colin Cowherd on Jacksonville's Strategy:
"You got first time GM coach coordinators. How about you go through a camp or two, huge swing over compensate." (20:45)
Michael Urban on Shedeur Sanders:
"I have a lot of respect for him and, I did a lot of homework on this because I know we'd be asked on our podcast." (45:15)
Colin Cowherd on Cleveland's Leadership:
"I like Andrew Berry. I have, I've said this. The ownership drives me nuts. I love the coach and I love the GM." (25:10)
Colin Cowherd on Humility:
"Humility works in the summer. It works in the fall. Humility works in the spring." (50:30)
