Boozing, schmoozing. The weather is great. It's so good to be back here. This is not to brag or anything and not to date ourselves. Like our 19th Super bowl week and it never gets old. So exciting, so much fun. All leading to the big game on Sunday. Super pumped about it. So you got to start preparing your fix ins and your chips and dips and where you're going and who you're inviting. And again, all the storylines and all the guests will be bringing it to you throughout the week. Hope you had a great weekend. Hope you had a, a David Benavidez sort of weekend.
Rich Davis
We were in Vegas for fight weekend and there was some damn good fights. We had a lot of funny times. Vegas, always a great time.
Steve Covino
Yeah, we got to tell you about it. Lots to get to. We got last one standing. We're giving away prizes. We're going to do things that made you go hmm all weekend long. Obviously we're going to talk about Luka and Ad.
Rich Davis
I got to ask that would it be a bad look and would the Fox Sports people get mad if I showed up with the male version of the Bianca sensory outfit? What if I Just showed up in, like, a sheer outfit.
Steve Covino
My surprise, I was gonna wear Friday.
Rich Davis
We're filling it for the herd on Wednesday. Let's make an impact. I'll wear my sheer outfit.
Steve Covino
No. Yeah. That was wild. Hope you enjoyed the Grammys last night. I didn't really watch them, to be honest, but I watch it just.
Rich Davis
Just to be in the loop. And I'll tell you what, I don't know if anyone's having a better week than Kendrick Lamar wins a handful of Grammys and then he's doing the super bowl halftime show. So.
Steve Covino
No. What's ironic about it or odd, however you want to look at it, is that a diss track. Danny G and I were talking about it earlier. A which became an anthem. Also got all these accolades at the Grammys. Like, how do you think Drake feels about that? If this track against Drake is celebrated, you know, at the biggest event of the year in music.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Danny G
There's been hundreds of diss tracks in hip hop over the years, and none have ever won an award. So this goes down in rap history.
Steve Covino
One, like five. And if you didn't get Rich's reference yesterday, because you have a life and you didn't see it on social media.
Rich Davis
I don't know how you missed it.
Steve Covino
On social media, because not everybody lives that life. People are on the road and they're busy. Bianca Sensory is Kanye West's wife, and she's a good looking woman, but she showed up with nothing on. That was the whole story. Nothing on. But when we.
Danny G
When we say she had a trench coat on, she. Yeah, she disrobed.
Steve Covino
Yes.
Danny G
And then went nude.
Steve Covino
Right. It was like a. A nude dress, like, completely see through.
Rich Davis
But even by saying see through, you're giving it too much credit.
Steve Covino
It was Saran wrap. I don't even know how to describe it.
Rich Davis
It's almost like a big Ziploc bag.
Steve Covino
Yeah, exactly.
Rich Davis
You could see it all.
Steve Covino
That was yesterday. And was it better?
Danny G
Jaden Smith's big mansion head.
Steve Covino
Dude, that was the dumbest thing I've ever seen in my life. Jaden Smith, Will Smith's son, showed up with a castle on his head. It's so dumb. I'm glad I didn't watch anything.
Rich Davis
I'll tell you this. What went on in the NBA over the weekend was so big that it got a shout out at the Grammys last week. They came back from commercial, and then there was Jim Gaffigan, and he's like. During the commercial break, I got traded to the Lakers with Trevor Noah. So this Luka Anthony Davis. We gotta dive right in. We're coming back from the fight.
Steve Covino
Fight was great, by the way. I do gotta say that we had a great time in Vegas and we interviewed Jim Lampley and Brian Custer. If you missed any of that, we even did a bonus pod. Check Cavino and Rich on Apple podcasts. Benavidez, the Mexican monster battled David Morell. Was the fight of the year. Even though it's February, it was a battle for the ages. The Pitbull Cruz fight was great. And while all this was going on, Israel Adesanya got knocked out in UFC earlier that day. But it was a great weekend for fights and a great weekend drama filled weekend drama show. Triple G style of sports. Because we're at the fight and I got to paint this picture because if you've never been to a fight. Yeah, there's like a foggy, dream like atmosphere going on. It's like a smoky Vegas atmosphere. It's like you're at photon in the late 80s, laser lights and fog. And, you know, it's this feeling of this fight. So it's like a dreamlike sort of quality in the air. Like, man, that fight was wild. Right?
Rich Davis
I sure wasn't the edible I gave you.
Steve Covino
It could have been the edible. It could have been the boozing and schmoozing. Could have been Vegas. But there is a vibe in the air is my point. And we're riding off this high of the fight. Like, damn, that fight was wild, right? That was a battle.
Rich Davis
No, give it the analogy. You know when you get out of a concert or you're off a roller coaster. Yeah. When you leave a good concert, your hearing's not right. Like, you're still in like, this, like, almost like a fog.
Steve Covino
And it was a good fight. So we're leaving the casino, man, Benavidez, I think he'll kill Canelo. I don't know. We're talking about the fight. We get a text on our phone from our buddy spot and it was Luca traded to the Lakers. Like, yeah, right. Like, you immediately thought you'd click it and there'd be a naked black guy sitting on his bed, right? Like, this can't be. This is fake wood.
Rich Davis
He got me again.
Steve Covino
Right? Like, this is a fake link. I know our buddies and I know how these work. I'm not buying into this. Yeah, it's always like San Francisco Chronicle or something, right? Like something weird. And you're like, oh, I was bamboo. It's a fake link. But you hear a buzz, not only about the fight. In the casino, you hear a buzz about, yo, did you see Luca? Lakers, yo. AD's gone. You hear this buzz, and you watch, and it's like time standing still, and people are looking at their phone and you realize what? This is real.
Rich Davis
Well, I'm. From my perspective, you went ahead of us to meet up with some listeners and some colleagues at the center bar.
Steve Covino
Yeah.
Rich Davis
So Covino's already at the bar ordering a drink. Danny G. And I stopped for a slice of pizza.
Danny G
The smart move.
Rich Davis
The smart move.
Steve Covino
I think that was the Edibles kicking it.
Rich Davis
So we're getting a slice, and there's a long line, and all at once, almost like a damn catastrophe. But it wasn't bad news. It was fun news. Everyone looks down at their phone, and the first instinct was, yo, did Shams get hacked? Because everybody. Everyone's responding to his tweet about this trade, and the sentiment was, y'all, this is fake. And then we're looking on all different social medias to see, yo, is this real? Is this? And immediately he follows it up with another tweet. Like, again, I was not hacked. This is real. And then the conversation starts.
Steve Covino
Yeah, because again, this was so out of left field. Even though that's a baseball example, would it be Danny G. He was straight. So far off the bench that.
Rich Davis
So far off the court.
Steve Covino
So off the court.
Danny G
So far out of the G league.
Steve Covino
Yeah. You're like, what? How is this possible? Did anybody know about this? So many questions come to mind. So, again, had a great time at the fight. Catch it on our podcast feed. But after the fight, the biggest story is Luka for ad. So it's a question of who wins the trade. Did LeBron know? Is this the biggest trade ever of our lifetime? We're racking our brains trying to figure that out. Is anyone safe in the NBA? And is this really about the owners flexing, that they're still in control here? You know, there's so much going on.
Rich Davis
You just asked, like, four good questions. And I have more to add on to that. But I think everyone immediately was quick to be like, come on. Like, LeBron didn't know. And somehow I believe he really didn't. Maybe he's just a good actor in this one. But I don't think LeBron was as in the loop as you.
Steve Covino
I believe it too. I believe the storyline, because, again, this is about moving forward. This is the first time we've seen, you know, a team moving forward, thinking forward outside of LeBron. And I think had he known, he may have Put a stop to it because ad's his boy. Like, maybe it wouldn't have happened if they included him.
Rich Davis
So I do believe that we actually have the audio of Shams talking about the announcement he made. Take a listen. I mean, I thought my phone was hacked when I got the text messages with the details of the trade and when I got wind of the deal. But you peel back the curtain, and for the Mavericks, they honestly, internally believe that this move puts them in a better position to win a championship. Of course, there are issues that they had, obviously, with Luka Doncic, his conditioning levels to an extent, but they have that belief. And when you think about the next.
Bobby Bones
Several months, the next few years, that.
Rich Davis
We'Re gonna know the exact answer to.
Steve Covino
Whether they were right in this decision or if they were wrong.
Rich Davis
I mean, it's like a draft, right? People do the degrading of a draft, and you're like, how are you grading something when they didn't play it down? They didn't shoot one free throw. They didn't take, you know, one at bat, and you're. You're grading a draft or a trade?
Steve Covino
Well, not only that, you can't grade this because you don't know if the moves are finished yet. So you really can't fully grade it. If you want to grade just the trade and where it is right now, you got to give advantage Mavericks because they're gearing up to win now.
Rich Davis
Oh, you think that? I saw that.
Steve Covino
There's no question. Social media for the future, unless they get more moves in the making and find a big man, there's no question that the Mavericks are playing to win now, and they believe that defense wins, and that AD was the missing piece here. So the Mavericks have an advantage that the Lakers don't. Lakers are gearing toward the future, and they win all around because Luka is undeniably a great. He's 25 years old, but they still have a missing piece. I think if the Lakers make that move, then you're saying, yeah, man, they're. They're definitely making a move to win this year, which is awesome, but they still need some pieces and some moves to be made.
Rich Davis
That's. That's the best part about these fake grades, because what you just said makes a lot of sense, but I've seen people say the complete opposite, that the Lakers clearly won this because they're planning for life beyond LeBron James, eighth in.
Steve Covino
The big picture in the long run.
Rich Davis
So, I mean, there's a lot of people. If you asked 100 people, I would argue 7 out of 10 would say, Lakers win this trade again.
Steve Covino
That's almost a different sentiment, though. Who wins this trade? Yeah. In the long run as a franchise and organization, Lakers, clearly. As far as. Who really wins in the moment, as far as championships this year, if it were to remain this way, the Mavericks are looking better at the moment because they just beefed up their defense tremendously. Danny G. Are we going to see? Because you're the resident NBA guru and Lakers fan, it's a Laker.
Rich Davis
So this is. This matters to him.
Steve Covino
We know that. It's not done yet.
Danny G
I hope not, because I like Jackson Hayes, who right now is the big man for the Lakers. Yeah, but they obviously need more size. You have the Nuggets, and you also have to deal now with AD on the Mavs.
Steve Covino
So you're hearing whispers of, I mean, all sorts of names. Right. But even to Jimmy Butler, who made it clear that he wants to be a Phoenix Sun. He may end up on the Mavericks, for all we know. And again, what we learned, if anything, is that the players aren't all in control like we sometimes think they are. The owners are flexing big time. Not only are the Lakers and Mavs flexing, but this is a joyful day for all the owners, as you've heard all over social media and on the news, because it reminded everybody. And you heard Kevin Durant say it over the weekend, is anyone safe? And who are the real untouchables? And is there such a thing anymore in the NBA if you could dish a Luka and an ad, you know, sort of an even swap at the moment and no one even know about it.
Danny G
Yeah, I was confused about the trade when I was standing with Rich in the pizza line because I didn't know whether to be fully excited about it or not. Because I like AD I've loved watching him play for the Lakers. He's been an integral part of the team, obviously helped win the championship, even though a lot of people discount it because it was the COVID season. But watching AD be a monster on both ends of the court, and then you get a guy now who's an offensive weapon, then obviously the hole in the lineup, the hole in the roster right now is defense and size.
Steve Covino
That's the thing.
Danny G
So if the Lakers can pull a move to get the big guy out of Utah or get a Miles Turner or somebody like that, there's a small list of big guys available right now. I'm really curious to see the move they make before the trade deadline on.
Rich Davis
Thursday, Danny was in the pizza line, confused about, is this good for his Lakers? I was confused because Danny goes, do you have Hawaiian pizza? I learned that Danny's Danny. She's a Hawaiian pizza guy. He's a pineapples and ham.
Steve Covino
And if you guys are confused, how do you think LeBron felt when he was at dinner and he realized his boy got traded? Talk about conflicting feelings, right? It's like, my boy's gone, but now I get a superstar to join my team, a guy that he admires. And, of course, Luka idolizes LeBron. So there has to be a lot of conflict there, to the point where it's still a News story that LeBron has stated he wishes to stay with the Lakers, as if there was going to be a doubt there, because you have to wonder how he felt in that moment. I imagine extremely conflicted.
Rich Davis
Well, I think LeBron played it well from a younger perspective. If you're talking to millennials and younger, your response on social media to a breakup, to a new job, to something happening with your friends or family, people put way too much stock in the social media response. And I think LeBron posting a couple heartfelt photos of him and Ad saying, yo, go. Go to Dallas and slay it, my friend. Like, my friend, go do it. And I think that, to me, is a good look. While at the same time embracing like, yo, we're getting Luke.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah, yeah. And he put out all fires of. He knew about it immediately. So, yeah, immediately it was on social media that he knew nothing about this. And anyone that insinuated differently, he was calling him out as a clown.
Rich Davis
Yeah, love you, my dog. Go crazy over there. And a picture of them hugging and a picture of them embracing with the NBA trophy and champagne.
Steve Covino
I'm with Danny G. Even posted, like.
Rich Davis
A montage of AD as a Laker, so he's letting it be known like.
Steve Covino
Ad, Ad's my boy.
Rich Davis
You're my boy.
Steve Covino
This is part of the business. And as A true professional, LeBron has played with so many great players, and he noticed. He knows that's part of the deal, even though I'm sure he's unhappy about it. Yeah, that's the right move to make. But when I look back at AD's run as a Laker, he had so many injuries, but I'll always look at him as a guy that helped him win a championship.
Danny G
And he's been my favorite Laker.
Steve Covino
Yeah, he's great.
Danny G
I'm not alone as a Lakers fan saying, if it had been LeBron traded instead of AD for Luka, I would have been even more excited because if it was Luka and Anthony Davis together, then that would have been the dream.
Rich Davis
Really? Yeah. And then after all that love For a day, LeBron posted a really delicious looking meal. He. I didn't know LeBron's in the food game. Oh, yeah, what is that? Short ribbon, grits, some red wine.
Steve Covino
There's so many questions, like, I think you're hungry. Is this the greatest duo that LeBron has been a part of? He's played with so many big names throughout his career. That's very hard to say.
Danny G
Right?
Rich Davis
Dwayne Wade in his prime, you know, with Bosch also. And then Kevin Love.
Steve Covino
He's played with so many superstars. But then when Rich. Finally, when Rich and Danny came back from their munchy pizza session, he joined us at the bar and we're like, whoa, can you believe this? Again? We were in Vegas when this trade happened for the fight. The question was because we were all in such shock. Hold on a second. Is this the biggest trade of our lifetime? That really was where we were when we found out. Like, have we ever witnessed any trade this big in our lifetime? Because even if you're a casual basketball fan, you're like, man, this is crazy, dude. How did nobody know about this? And how is this gonna unfurl like, and is this the biggest one? And we came to the conclusion that there's only one other, let's say, player swap in this way that compares, and it still doesn't even compare.
Rich Davis
Listen, this is such a big deal. One of the people we were having drinks with at the bar is one of our friends and guy that listens every day. Wes in Vegas. And he couldn't care less about the NBA. And he was like, this is really exciting.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah.
Rich Davis
I mean, it was just an exciting story for just a sports fan. And the one. And we didn't want to look it up because that's cheating when you're at the bar.
Steve Covino
We went old school. We went with let's use our brains.
Danny G
I found one in my producer brain.
Rich Davis
Oh, really? In the. In the. In the brain of producing and just, I don't know, without looking and Googling everything. Sometimes it's fun to just say, let me try to think. And if you're roughly 40. Ish. 30, 40, 50. Let's take it back to like 1980 till now, the last 45 years. Is there a trade of two stars even close to this? And only one came to mind?
Danny G
Yeah. The first thing that came to Mind for me was Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff.
Steve Covino
Oh, you said that one. Yeah, yeah. Because when that was brought up, like, oh, yeah, that was a really good one. But at that moment, Goff wasn't this standout superstar that he became in Detroit.
Danny G
He had helped the Rams get to the people.
Steve Covino
Yeah, of course.
Danny G
But remember, they still thought he was a liability and wasn't going to get them the championship.
Steve Covino
But again, a quarterback swap that benefited both cities. And you're right, two big stars. So when Danny G brought that up and I forgot who brought it up, it was like, yeah, that's probably the only thing even remotely close, and it's not even close to what we're experiencing right now, which makes it so exciting and makes it really ironic that we're talking NBA on the first day of radio row at super bowl week in New Orleans. Never thought that that's how significant this move was.
Rich Davis
It was so big. Because think about when LeBron said, Yo, we own Christmas Day, and the numbers come out and there's like 10 times many people watching football than basketball. But when you talk about what's a trade of this magnitude, keep in mind, I agree with you that Goff wasn't the star that Stafford was. But Goff had taken that Rams team to a Super Bowl. And if you remember, that was a team that lost 13 to 3 to the Patriots in what arguably was one of the more boring defensive Super Bowls, where they could only put up three against the Patriots. So that's why the Rams started saying, we got a great squad here, but we only put up three in the Super Bowl. So that's when they said, let's make the move for Stafford. Stafford ends up winning a Super Bowl. So then it's like, all right, advantage Rams. They got Stafford and won. But then the last two years, you're like, wow, Goff really settled into Detroit.
Steve Covino
Oh, yeah.
Rich Davis
And up until they floundered in the divisional round, people thought, oh, now Detroit's got their guy and he's an MVP candidate. So Goff and Stafford, if you could think of another. I can.
Steve Covino
Not this big, you know, significant, yes, but player for player, two superstars, you know, with stats. Yeah.
Danny G
Nothing matches this.
Steve Covino
No, it's. It's wild. I mean, you have to go back to 1918, when the Yankees got Babe Ruth, honestly. And I don't even know who they traded for him. I have no idea how that works out.
Rich Davis
Someone said, maybe put Paul George SGA in that conversation, but SGA was just an un. Not an unknown, but not a Proven superstar the way he is now.
Danny G
Yeah, he was an upcoming. A rising star.
Rich Davis
A rising star. So I don't know if he could even put that one in there. So if you have any other answers or 87799 on fox now let me.
Steve Covino
Pose this question too. Again, there's lots of questions that we pose from this trade. Who wins? Did LeBron know? Biggest trade ever. Is anyone safe? Are the owners flexing? Here's one more question to think about and then we'll get your feedback. Apparently the story today is Luka just bought a house.
Rich Davis
Apparently, apparently not yet. Not like a little beach cabana. He bought a 15 million dollar mansion that he closed on last week in Dallas.
Danny G
So a big deal AD just got a new property in Southern California as well. So both of these guys, both of.
Steve Covino
These guys in an awkward situation, you know, this move from Texas to LA affects Luka with that Max deal. He loses $117 million in the process. He bought this house. Right. Their lives get turned upside down. But when you realize that AD bought a house in LA and Luca bought a house in Dallas, if somebody knew ahead of time, if put it this way, the owners knew, right? They were talking about for about a month, Dallas only went to la. That was the other part of the story. They only went to LA to negotiate. Nowhere else. Nobody else. But if somebody were to find out, do they owe that information to the player before they were to purchase something? Because. Because I know Rich and I have a story. I know you have a personal story about a radio friend of yours. So think about that. Like if you found out your buddy was going to get fired and he was about to buy a house, would you feel it to be the right thing to do in your heart? To be like, yo, dude, before you bought that house, before you invest your money, I just want to let you know, I heard a little something. I heard some rumblings, I heard some rumblings about your future here. Like, what would you do in that situation? Plus, we got things that made you go super bowl week edition here on the show.
Rich Davis
Plus a question about cooking for the big game for the Super Bowl. All that and more. We got Covino and Rich right here live from New Orleans super bowl media row, FOX Sports Radio. Let's go.

I don't know, man. I don't know if they're ready for this. You think?
Rich Davis
Okay. I'm just saying we're coming up the Grammys, you know.
Steve Covino
Yeah. And what song do I choose? That's a good. Let me think about that. But I'm here to have a great time and do lots of big interviews. We're filling in for Colin on Wednesday and our show on Wednesday, so Double doozy. Thank you guys for hanging out with us. We appreciate that. Now, before we get into things that make you go, hmm. We want to talk about Luca and his house purchase. Yeah. AD and his house purchase. Look, we like these moves. We get excited about them, but people's lives are flipped upside down. And the casual fans like whoopity do, man, I feel real bad for these multi millionaires. That is kind of tough when you think about it.
Rich Davis
But there is a part of me that I even say, whoopity do these.
Steve Covino
Guys, you know, Part of me, too. But hold on.
Rich Davis
Let's look at Anthony Davis.
Danny G
Oh, his spread is amazing.
Rich Davis
I'm. I mean, the guy makes almost $50 million a year, and he's been in the NBA, and his total earnings in the NBA is in the hundreds of millions of dollars. So when you're like, guys gotta move. There's a part of me that feels that way. I'll be honest.
Steve Covino
A lot of emotions going on. I think. I think we're gonna see that translate on the court. We're supposed to see Luka on Saturday, right? On the 8th. He's supposed to return and play for the Lakers. Let's hope. That'd be cool. I think both of these feel a little disrespected. I think you're going to see a fire lit for both dudes. I think you're going to Luca more.
Danny G
So because he basically has been called fat.
Steve Covino
Exactly. They're calling him out of shape. He's a fat. So they don't believe it.
Rich Davis
You see the memes? The memes are. The memes are Luca. Luca as a Laker, and it's a picture of James Corden. Like, they are. They're fat. Shaming the hell out of this.
Steve Covino
But Lebron will keep him in shape. Keep them honest. Just living in LA and the lifestyle and, you know, looking good in that. Oh, in that yellow and gold. The fat. Purple and gold.
Rich Davis
The fat shaming doesn't stop with James Corden. D.C. it said Lucas first triple double. And it was a. It was a In N Out burger there. The memes are going at him.
Danny G
That's not right.
Rich Davis
I want to show you a number. When you talk about feeling bad for people. Yeah. Now listen, it. I'm not trying to make a comparison to something terribly sad, but, you know, there's that section of people that didn't feel compassion for rich people who lost their homes in the fire.
Steve Covino
Yeah, trash bags.
Rich Davis
Yeah, trash bags are like. They're rich. It's like, are you kidding? I get it. Tragedy, this and that, but moving isn't losing your house. It's just a pain in the ass. I want you to look at the career earnings of Anthony Davis in the NBA and then tell me if you feel a little bad. Okay? Yeah.
Steve Covino
But when you just read that number to everyone, $335,911,755, you feel bad still. Not really, but they're still humans.
Danny G
I know you could keep those purchases and buy another home in your new.
Steve Covino
Luckily, that's. That's, you know, the luxury they have of being super rich. But I'll give you one personal example and something that Rich dealt with one time.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
In 2020. Rich and I said, you know what? We're doing pretty good here. 2020, we're on ESPN TV. We had a daily show every night on ESPN, and we had a nice little gig at SiriusXM Covid Hits. And we lost one gig. We're like, oh, yeah, we're still okay. We lost another gig. And guess what? We had just bought two new homes. I bought a new home, and Rich bought a new home.
Rich Davis
Yeah, we don't live together.
Steve Covino
No, we don't live together.
Rich Davis
But we had.
Steve Covino
Separately, we had just purchased new homes in Los Angeles because we were like, oh, we're doing good.
Rich Davis
And I remember thinking, like, there was.
Steve Covino
A level of panic. Like, oh, man, we just lost two gigs and we just bought two houses.
Danny G
Why do you guys share hotel rooms?
Steve Covino
That's weird. Yeah. So look, my confidence put that to rest a little bit. Like, we're gonna be okay. I got it.
Rich Davis
And it worked out.
Steve Covino
It worked out great. But there was a minute of panic where you're like, man, how do we get by? And then there's another story of Rich when He worked at Z100 in New York City. Yeah, he thought he was the nighttime hottie that was gonna be there forever. Nights on Z100, which was such a great gig for him as a young man in his come up in radio. And you have a friend that tipped you off, something real important.
Rich Davis
My buddy Nico. And, and I was not that confident, by the way. I love that you think I was, but I was getting in my mind, I'm like, I don't know if they're gonna keep me around forever because you know, in radio, like especially like music, top 40 or hip hop or rock radio, they make moves more often, right? I was like, I don't know. Our buddy Nico got a heads up like, yeah, I don't think they're gonna extend your contract. And he heard rumblings and was probably told, don't tell Rich. And he's like, that's my boy, I'm telling him. And he pulled me aside. He's like, yeah, they're not going to renew your contract.
Steve Covino
So before Rich made any moves, any permanent moves, life changing moves, investments or anything, our buddy, Rich's buddy at the time did a solid and told him something that he really didn't want to tell him. And that was, hey, you're probably getting fired soon.
Rich Davis
Well, I remember I always heard a story, I might come up and this is not just radio, but it's any industry. I heard that the morning guy and usually the morning radio people in that old school radio world were paid the most. I heard that the morning guy was about to buy a beautiful new home and put his kids in a private school in that area. And like he had this whole plan and, and everyone behind the scenes like, oh yeah, they're firing him and the bosses let him go through with all that. And I remember thinking that was the weakest move ever. Like at that point you gotta be like, hey man, we may need to fight you earlier because I don't want to see a grown man or woman go through all that.
Steve Covino
And unfortunately you hear stories like this all the time.
Rich Davis
Yeah.
Steve Covino
And you know, was Luka and AD tipped off? No, hell no. Because that's just business. And I get it. But it's still unfortunate. It does pose the question, if you knew this stuff, would you tell that person before they made those moves? Hit us up 87799 on Fox or just hit us Covino and Rich. Now next we get into things that made you go, hmm, super bowl edition. Any story in the world of sports or entertainment that made you scratch your noggin this weekend. But first, let's go to our boy, Dan Byer.
Dan Byer
What's up, DB Guys, a lot going on in the National Football League, including Commissioner Roger Goodell having his yearly press conference prior to the Super Bowl. It's changed dates from years ago. Used to be on a Friday, then it was a Wednesday. Now it's happening on a Monday where reporters can ask him all sorts of questions about things going on in the league. And somebody asked him today about the theory that the Kansas City Chiefs, the AFC representative in the super bowl, were getting an officiating bias. Here's the commission's response.
Steve Covino
It's a ridiculous theory for anyone who might take it seriously, but at the end of the day, you know, it's something we always have to continue to work on. How do we make our officiating better?
Dan Byer
Also talked about the possibility of replay assists.
Steve Covino
Replay assists this year, I think was was a big step forward for us. I see us in the future adding more plays and we'll look at that with the competition committee. I think there are areas like face mask and some of the other areas that I think we could add to that and assist the officials in what's a very fast game.
Dan Byer
That was always my thing. I always wanted face masks to be reviewed. It could be coming in the near future.
Rich Davis
You know, db, it's interesting that it's such a narrative that the commissioner had to respond. Like, usually like a story like that. It would garner no response from someone of importance. But the fact that Roger Goodell had to come out and say that just shows that the narrative has caught some steam.
Dan Byer
Yes, absolutely. People are talking about it and talking about it a lot. People talking about the trade request of Miles Garrett, the Browns defensive end wants out of Cleveland. Browns have responded by saying they have no plans on trading Garrett, who's under contract through 2026. Commander's owner Josh Harris says the team will not be changing their nickname. While Major League Baseball fired umpire Pat Hoberg after he shared a legal sports betting acqu with a friend who bet on baseball, he also allegedly intentionally deleted messages as part of the investigation. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said today that there was no evidence that Holberg directly bet on games or manipulated the outcome of games in any way. Florida State men's basketball coach Leonard Hamilton will retire at the end of the season. Bucks without Giannis Antetokounmpo, Damian Lillard and Chris Middleton tonight in Oklahoma City. Guys, back to you.
Steve Covino
Thank you, DB. Again is Covino and Rich live from the Tyrack.com studio and media row at Super Bowl 59. So next we get into things that made you go. We get you involved. FOX Sports Radio Nation live from NOLA. Hit us up at 87799 on Fox.

Rich Davis
Pink.
Bobby Bones
It felt like I told you I loved you. I'm gonna be honest. It was a little pink.
Rich Davis
There was something sentimental when you like when you send it. It was like, do I send the heart now?
Bobby Bones
I don't like the color edition.
Rich Davis
It's extremely pink.
Bobby Bones

And we are live from the Tyrack.com studio and media row at Super Bowl 59, New Orleans. Yeah, buddy. Hell yeah is right. So happy to be here. So pumped. Covino and Rich on 5 sports radio. And consider this the Monday calm before the storm. Because the rest of the week, throughout the week, it gets crazy. It's one build, one big build up, I should say one big crescendo to the super bowl because you never know who's going to stop by. We have tons of guests lined up throughout the week. Wednesday is going to be a crazy day for us because we're filling in for the herd Wednesday and still doing our show. So again, follow our adventures at Covino and Rich.
Rich Davis
Sort of like Doug Gottlieb will be halftime.
Steve Covino
Yeah, yeah, exactly.
Rich Davis
We do a show for Colin, then Doug for a couple hours and then we're back.
Steve Covino
No one's caring about halftime this year. You said it's not gonna be a dope halftime.
Rich Davis
I think Kendrick Lamar deserved his Grammys. I think that song's great. I think it's a cultural anthem. I think it's the best diss track of all time. My theory on Kendrick Lamar is does your mom know Kendrick Lamar?
Steve Covino
Yes. Because of us. Again.
Rich Davis
But I'm saying most parents, like if you ask the average mom or dad.
Steve Covino
It'S the mom test.
Rich Davis
It's the mom test. Like your mom knows who Beyonce is or Lady Gaga or, you know, Bruno Mars.
Steve Covino
But I'll tell you who I don't like, Steven. That Bianca Sensory, Kanye's wife.
Rich Davis
So anyway, and I don't like that chapel Roan. She looks like a damn clown.
Steve Covino
Exactly. I'm Covino. That is Rich. We're @COVINOENRICH at Fox Sports Radio on social media again, join our fun from New Orleans. Visit ExpressPros.com today and transform your hiring process. That's ExpressPros.com and now we do it every Monday. Let's get into it. Things that made you go, hmm?
Danny G
Things that make you go.
Steve Covino
Things that make super bowl week edition. Of course, there's some NBA questions as well. The Luka ad trade made all of us go, hmm. But I got one to kick it off. All throughout the week, you're gonna hear about the Super Bowl. Lots of interviews, lots of fun on our show. We'll be talking about all the parties, all the events. Tonight we're going to opening night, they call it. So we'll be going to opening night at Caesar Superdome. We'll come back with tons of stories. But all throughout the week, you're going to hear everybody saying, man, I'll tell you what, you can't bet against Mahomes. You can't bet against Mahomes. So the first thing that makes me say hmm to that is, well, how do you stop Saquon Barkley? And we're going to ask everybody that brings that up, anybody that picks the Chiefs to win. Okay, well, how do you stop Saquon? Because it can't be both.
Rich Davis
I told you, I'm not betting on this game.
Steve Covino
It can't be both. Someone here is gonna win. So that right there, just when we think about the game coming up, makes me say, hmm. And I don't think enough people are talking about that.
Rich Davis
All right, things that made you go, hmm? Yeah, of course I got NFL ones, of course I got Luka ones, NBA ones. I got a couple Grammy ones. If you watched last night, have we officially forgiven Will Smith?
Steve Covino
No, not me.
Rich Davis
He came on stage, had a pretty sweet looking suit on. He was.
Steve Covino
I actually blame him for his son's stupid outfit last night, but I like him even less now.
Rich Davis
I thought will look good. And he, he sort of led the whole Quincy Jones tribute. I'll tell you what made me go, hmm. Stevie Wonder singing We Are the World. I'm thinking, what is Lionel Richie? Got better plans tonight? Where was Lionel Richie? You're telling me Cyndi Lauper or Willie Nelson couldn't have come out and done some type of cool tribute to Quincy Jones together?
Steve Covino
You think Willie Nelson wants to hang around with Chapel Roan?
Rich Davis
There comes a time when you need Willy Nelson.
Steve Covino
He's got no. It has got his shown us by turning stone to bread.
Rich Davis
That was Willy.
Danny G
So be honest really quick, Covino. If you were there in the same room with Jaden Smith wearing that ridiculous outfit, I'd be looking for my exploratory figure. Would you have pushed him by his castle head? Yeah, because you know, that would have got him off balance.
Steve Covino
I'M looking for my he man action figures. He had Castle Grayskull. If you didn't see it, because I get it, you have better things to do. He wore a castle on his head. It's the dumbest thing.
Danny G
Please, please, look up the picture.
Rich Davis
Imagine figuring out where you're sitting.
Steve Covino
But I, in my mind, I would imagine if.
Rich Davis
Imagine if you found your way to the Grammys and you had to sit behind them.
Steve Covino
Yeah, it's ridiculous that that made me.
Rich Davis
Say, hey, guy with the, with the house on your head, sit down.
Steve Covino
You know what else makes me say? We touched on it already. Again. There's so many super bowl storylines, but again, you can't avoid that trade that happened over the weekend. It's like, how does luka deal with 117 million lost because of that Max deal he's no longer a part of? I get it. It's a win for the Mavericks to escape it, but also a win for the Lakers to avoid any of that. Right. Get a discount to get a discounted rate of 100 million or whatever when.
Danny G
They give them a big deal. Yeah.
Steve Covino
So how do you swallow that? Plus taxes in la?
Rich Davis
There's something gross about it.
Steve Covino
You can only imagine. This light's more of a fire for Luka because there's got to be a sense of bitterness here. Like, man, I get it, it's business, but that hurts.
Rich Davis
Speaking of contracts, can I give you one more? And then we'll take your feedback when we come back. Five days till spring training. Is Pete Alonso gonna get this done with the Mets? Five days. What is going on?
Danny G
Story it is Alonzo fatigue.
Steve Covino
Yep. No, but it's a big story.
Rich Davis
I have it and I'm a Mets fan.
Bobby Bones
All right.
Rich Davis
Hey, we got more. Kavino and Rich, we are from media Row. New Orleans Super Bowl. Can't wait. Chiefs, Eagles, let's go. We got more next right here. Fox Sports Radio.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 1: Wait, WHO Got Traded?!
Introduction In the February 4, 2025 episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, the focus centers on one of the most shocking trades in NBA history: Luka Doncic being traded from the Dallas Mavericks to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis. This episode delves deep into the ramifications of the trade, exploring its impact on both franchises, the players involved, and the broader NBA landscape.
Overview of the Trade The hosts, Steve Covino, Rich Davis, and Danny G, open the discussion by expressing their initial disbelief upon hearing the news of the trade. They highlight the magnitude of exchanging two of the league's superstars and ponder the strategic motivations behind such a move.
Steve Covino [08:34]: "We touched on it already. There's so many super bowl storylines, but again, you can't avoid that trade that happened over the weekend. It's like, how does Luka deal with 117 million lost because of that Max deal he's no longer a part of?"
Reactions from Players and Fans The conversation shifts to the immediate reactions from key figures and the fanbase. LeBron James’ response is scrutinized, particularly his public support for Anthony Davis despite the trade, suggesting a level of professionalism and friendship that transcends team dynamics.
Rich Davis [17:50]: "LeBron posting a couple heartfelt photos of him and AD saying, 'yo, go to Dallas and slay it, my friend,' shows his support despite the move."
The hosts also discuss social media's role in shaping fan perceptions, noting the mixed sentiments and the rapid spread of information (and misinformation) surrounding the trade.
Steve Covino [09:47]: "It's fake wood. But you hear a buzz, not only about the fight in the casino, you hear a buzz about, yo, did Shams get hacked?"
Implications for Teams A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to analyzing what this trade means for the Dallas Mavericks and the Los Angeles Lakers. The Mavericks are seen as bolstering their defense and positioning themselves as immediate championship contenders, while the Lakers, despite gaining Luka, may still lack certain elements to secure a title this season.
Rich Davis [12:33]: "The Mavericks are gearing up to win now. They believe that defense wins, and AD was the missing piece here."
Conversely, the Lakers are portrayed as possibly struggling to integrate Luka into their system and addressing defensive gaps, which Anthony Davis was expected to fill.
Comparisons to Historical Trades The hosts compare the Luka-AD trade to historical NBA trades, with Danny G. referencing the Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff exchange in the NFL as a parallel in sports trade significance.
Danny G [21:00]: "The first thing that came to mind was Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. But that's probably the only thing even remotely close, and it's not even close to what we're experiencing right now."
Personal Anecdotes and Stories Throughout the episode, Steve Covino and Rich Davis share personal stories illustrating the unpredictable nature of professional sports careers. Covino recounts a past experience where job security was compromised despite significant personal investments, drawing a parallel to the uncertainty faced by athletes like Luka and AD post-trade.
Steve Covino [31:32]: "We had just bought two new homes... we lost two gigs. Panic set in, but we managed to pull through."
Financial and Personal Impact The discussion also touches on the financial and personal impacts of such trades. Luka's $117 million loss due to the Max deal and Anthony Davis' new property purchases highlight the substantial lifestyle changes athletes undergo with significant team shifts.
Rich Davis [24:10]: "AD just got a new property in Southern California as well. Both of these guys, both of them, their lives get turned upside down."
Conclusion The episode wraps up with the hosts pondering the long-term outcomes of the Luka-AD trade. They emphasize that while immediate effects are visible, the true impact will unfold over the next few seasons, shaping the future trajectories of both the Mavericks and the Lakers.
Steve Covino [13:11]: "If you want to grade just the trade and where it is right now, you've got to give advantage Mavericks because they're gearing up to win now."
Notable Quotes
Steve Covino [08:34]: "We touched on it already. There's so many Super Bowl storylines, but again, you can't avoid that trade that happened over the weekend."
Rich Davis [17:50]: "LeBron posting a couple heartfelt photos of him and AD saying, 'yo, go to Dallas and slay it, my friend,' shows his support despite the move."
Danny G [21:00]: "The first thing that came to mind was Matthew Stafford and Jared Goff. But that's probably the only thing even remotely close."
Steve Covino [31:32]: "We had just bought two new homes... we lost two gigs. Panic set in, but we managed to pull through."
Final Thoughts The Herd with Colin Cowherd provides an in-depth and engaging analysis of the Luka Doncic and Anthony Davis trade, offering listeners a comprehensive understanding of its immediate and potential long-term effects on the NBA. Through expert insights, personal anecdotes, and lively discussions, the episode serves as a valuable resource for sports enthusiasts seeking clarity on one of the league's most impactful transactions.
