Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go on a Tuesday. Lots to talk about. Live in Los Angeles, it's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. One hour from now, the Herd hierarchy Nick Wright today Eric B. Enemy in studio. Can't wait to talk to Eric B. Enemy. Mahomes, Andy Reid Belichick in college. Can't wait for that in a couple of hours. J. Mac I don't even want to talk about Raiders. Falcons. I'll bury that one. Why not? Eight people watched it. But I think what we watched last night, you could see it in the body language. It was visual. It was obvious. The Chicago Bears are a broken franchise. Okay, Vikings, we'll get to that in a bit. But this is a broken franchise. In Chicago. The ownership, bottom three, team president, young general manager, hit and miss. If he left, fine. If he stayed, okay, coaching staff, none of it works. None of it. Yeah, they got some decent players. The jets have all sorts of good players. They're 4 and 10. And Caleb Williams, who was privately concerned before the draft but didn't want to be a bad guy, this was his nightmare. They have no leadership, top down. And by the way, how do you fix it? Well, the only way to fix it go to the Chargers, who also had a really good young quarterback, had a handful of really, really good players and they went and stopped screwing around and finally paid big money for a coach. 15 year, $15 million a year. Jim Harbaugh. And they have not regretted a second of it. They had a bad culture. Why? Most notably, they had a coach, Brandon Staley, that was completely over his skis, just like the Bear staff. You can't blame Thomas Brown. I mean, he's had three different parking spots in the organization in four weeks. They keep moving him up the food ch for this stuff. He'll be fine. He'll have a nice Career. There is only one answer to this. It's Mike Vrabel. That's it. There are no other answers. No more lightweights, no more coordinators. This lift is too big. Even with Vrabel, I'm not sure it can solve everything. But this is an organization and frankly, a city that's very, very political. And the only times in the history of Chicago sports or politics that you've ever had great success is with strong, defiant leadership. Look at the history of the city, sports. You had Theo Epstein. All right, Ed. Mike Ditka. All right, you start looking around from politics to sports. That's Chicago's answer. Vrabel's it. There's nobody else out there. There's nobody else. No college guys, no lightweight coordinators. The job's too big. And like the Chargers. The Chargers, at least. That's why I think this is a big lift. I'm not sure if Vrabel can solve it. The Chargers have always been good at quarterback. I mean, it was Dan Fouth who I grew up watching, Breeze, Rivers, Herbert. They've always been high octane, fun to watch. And it's not like the Spanos family. They had a reputation as being frugal. They weren't crazy, they weren't meddling. They were frugal. They no longer are. They finally just said, sometimes in life you just have to admit, I got to get out of the way. And the Spanos family said, you know what? We're giving it to Harbaugh. And Harbaugh is going to build a staff and he's going to call the D.C. the general manager. And they just got out of the way. And it works. And that's the only way to do it. I think this is a much bigger lift, much, much bigger lift than the Chargers job. Like when they hired Harbaugh, we all kind of knew. Oh, yeah, I go in 10, 11 games. They may make the playoffs and they're going to. Okay, we could feel that. But. But this one is. The division is really good with really good coaches. You could have had Cliff Kingsbury. You couldn't get out of the way. You could have had Harbaugh. Kevin Warren couldn't get out of the way. There is only one way to solve this thing. I mean, you won the Bryce Young trade and you're only one game better than Carolina and it was the steal of the decade. So it's not. And it's just not a quarterback thing. And let me give you an example. And I. And for the television audience, you'll understand this Radio is a little harder to follow. But if you look at every division in football not named the AFC South, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, Kansas City, Rams, Tampa, Detroit, Philly, Washington, I can argue all have either the best owner, the best front office or both. It's not just the quarterback and coach, although they are really important. It all starts upstairs. Bills, owner, front office excellent. Lions front office excellent. Kansas City, all of the above. Washington flushed all the losers out. Have much better people in Rams, Stan Kroenke less need like it's just a scouting department. You can just keep blaming coaches. You can keep running around. This organization is broken. Vrabel is the only answer. I feel bad for Caleb Williams, but this is what he was worried about privately out here in Los Angeles. My people connected to him said you're not going to be a bad guy but man, look at their history. They've never had a 4,000 yard passing quarterback. That's why I said the Chargers are a little bit. You can kind of look at the Chargers and go, well look what they did. They got out of the way and got got Harbaugh. But the Chargers had never been this dysfunctional. They just lost a bunch of close games. They always developed quarterbacks. They had a bunch of good players and the ownership group was not meddling. I don't know if you can fix Chicago. Some things are unfixable. Vrabel's the only answer. Here's Caleb after It's been frustrating and encouraging. The frustrating part is obviously we were on a coming games now eight. Yeah. Eight game losing streak. And that's not like I've said before, it's new to me. I haven't experienced anything like this. So their encouraging part is how much we fight as a team. Okay, so let's just talk about the Vikings again. Raiders, Falcons. I can't put that in the first segment. So Sam Darnold, Minnesota has a tough decision. I would franchise Sam Darnold, keep him around. But they brought Daniel Jones in. They drafted J.J. mcCarthy. It is likely that they're going to let Sam Darnold become, you know, a free agent. And here's what's really interesting. I love Darnold. You know that first of all his success is a total indictment on the jets in Carolina. I mean Aaron Rodgers career since he went to New York, circled the toilet. Okay, so Sam Darnold is only 27 years old. So somebody's going to get a very good quarterback in his prime. Big, strong, mobile, playmaker, playmaker, coachable kid. Here's the thing though. You're not going to get this good of a Sam Darnold because, you know, I don't even have to tell you this. Coaching is not even in this league. I mean, it. The gap between a McVeigh and a Kevin O'Connell, Andy Reid, Sean Payton, offensively and the rest of the league, or most of the rest of the league, is the Grand Canyon. All that said, you're not going to get Kevin O'Connell, you're not getting Justin Jefferson, you're not getting Jordan Addison. The O line is underrated. It. This is a perfect scenario for Sam. And I look around at all the teams that could get Sam Darnold and I'm like, there's one exception. There's one exception. The Indianapolis Colts. Anthony Richardson's had 14 starts. He completes 50% of his throws. It's a hard decision. Sometimes you just gotta say it's not working. The Colts roster like the Vikings, above average. Colts have good receivers. Not Justin Jefferson. Good receivers. Their o line, top 10 to 12 in the league. Their defense, go ask Bo Nixon. Sean Payton, their defense, had the game won. Jonathan Taylor had a goofy decision and fumbled away the game. But he's an excellent running back. There is one place where Sam Darnold can go and it's going to look closest to this. It's in the very winnable AFC South. It's not a great ownership division. Even in Indy, it is wonky and winnable and you'll get about 85%. You don't get a Justin Jefferson, you're not getting him. All right, that he is just different. But I. I'm watching this last night and I think they've got a very tough decision to make. But he's only 27 years old. Sam's got three to four years prime. That'll be the length of his contract. And I think Minnesota's going to let him go. I think I try to franchise him, but if they don't, coaching in this league is not even. But going from Kevin OConnell to the colt, Shane Steichen, that's as well as Sam Darnold can do. Michael Pittman, he played with him at usc. Good old line, nice roster. Sam Darnold, Colts. You would get the closest version of Vikings. Sam Darnold. I don't think Minnesota is a Super bowl team, but I do think. I do think what you're seeing between Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold is this rebirth of really talented quarterbacks. And it is an indictment of the Cleveland Browns. It is an indictment for both of them with Carolina. It's an indictment of the jets ownership gming. Coaching is not close to equal in this league. So Darnold's going to either keep flourishing for the Vikings or potentially flourish for the Colts. And I, folks, if you watch Denver and the Colts, Bo Nix is right out of college, second half. That's an NFL franchise quarterback. Colts don't have one. Took a swing. Young kid, nice kid, doesn't work. J. Mac, we got so many things going on today. So many things with. I think people have finally come to terms with TUA in Miami. No. For years, people pushed back when we, when we offered, when we suggested that Tua winning in January in the AFC was fool's gold. Little pushback on the 2 at train this week.
J. Mac
You know, I, I thought you were onto something with the Sam Darnold to the Colts. I like that.
Colin Cowherd
I was just looking in 50 million cap space.
J. Mac
I kind of like that move.
Colin Cowherd
50 million cap space.
J. Mac
You follow it up with two of the problem. You think two was the problem in Miami? No, I just got like a million problems.
Colin Cowherd
I, I will just say as I'm watching Minnesota last night and I'm watching this weekend, Colts have 50 million in cap space. They got the roster.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Denver was getting hammered at home and Denver's a playoff team. They were getting unrest hammered at home with a Hall of Fame coach. One team just needs a quarterback because I looked at the six teams that'll go after Darnold today. It's five disasters and one I think they could turn in Minnesota very quickly. Okay. We got a lot of stuff going on, you know, Eric B. Enemy and Nick Wright. Today heard hierarchy, top of the hour. Hey, it's getting close. I went shopping yesterday. I got my daughter's stuff all taken.
J. Mac
Care of in this cold weather. Oh, my God, it was like an arctic blast out here in L. A.
Colin Cowherd
You left the house, it was 60.
J. Mac
Okay. This morning it was like 40.
Colin Cowherd
It was 52. Okay.
J. Mac
I had gloves in a winter hat.

Hey, this is Levar Arrington here from up on Game and listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now something that should be personal to you as well. In our country, the hate is at an all time high and it's like we're going backward. The hate is winning. We can't allow that. All right? It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's enough. It's time for it to stop. We need to stop, regroup, change the momentum as a team because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team, so let's act like it. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a timeout against hate. Let's think about what we say and do and when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out. Imma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit Stand up to all hate.org to help and join me. And calling for a timeout against hate. By following at what's up with Hate or posting the blue square emoji, I.
Colin Cowherd
Saw something that I really liked. The 49ers have suspended linebacker Devondre Campbell for refusing to play any game. He walked out. He's done for the season. Baltimore. Meanwhile, the Ravens have excused wide receiver Deontay Johnson from team activities for a week. He refused to play at one point in a game against Philadelphia. The reason I love what San Francisco organizations and Baltimore are doing because it's the opposite of the NBA. Players trample everything else. They're coddled and pampered, making sure the stars are comfortable. The NFL is a true brotherhood. Rule number one. You play banged up, Nobody's ever entirely healthy, and you never, ever, under any circumstances, quit on a teammate. NBA Joel Embiid announced earlier this year, I will no longer be playing back to back. Oh, and it was accepted and nobody pushed back because it's the NBA in the NFL. Bye, bye. Off the team. AB Was a great player and he was a lot of work. But people kept AB around the minute he bailed on his team. He's never put on a pro uniform. San Francisco and Baltimore players. The coaches don't have to be hard. The players hold each other accountable because all football players care about all football games until the final play. There is a truth and a brotherhood in football that is really cool. It's just sort of like people in America that have to work hurt or sick in rain and sleet and snow. Maybe it's that that creates that brotherhood that you just play hurt. But the Niners and the Ravens are not interested in players who are healthy and available and refuse to play. It's not going to happen in this league. We've already got one NBA. We don't need another. And there's lots of things about the NBA I like. I think the athletes are incredible. But in the NFL, personal reasons is not an injury designation. You're sad. Go get a therapist. It's not the league's problem. You're going to play in practice every day, physically capable. If you can't and you're banged up, there are excellent doctors. There's less hitting in the sport before and after games than ever before. The league creates millionaires every day. But they do ask that if you're capable of playing, that you play. And there's a hierarchy to the NFL. You've got your general manager builds the team, your coaches coach the team. And your players play hard. And if they're capable of playing, they play. It's not asking that much as a pro athlete to play if you can. J. Mac with the news. No, no, no.
Steve Covino
Turn on the news.
Colin Cowherd
This is the Herd.
J. Mac
Hello, Josh. Allen Collin, best quarterback in the NFL. This season, there's no doubt about it, he has locked up the MVP award. Another spectacular performance against the Lions. 362 yards, two passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, and here's tight end Dawson Knox talking about his incredible run. It is incredible.
Colin Cowherd
There's no. It's hard to describe what he does on a consistent basis every single day. I've talked about it before, but sometimes you just turn into a fan. I mean, he threw a chest pass, touchdown to Dalton D fall back, but he's lifting the ball to guys making plays with his feet. I was yelling in my head to slide, but he's running guys over. It's so much fun to play with that dude. It's really a privilege and I hope I get to play with him as long as I possibly can. Herd hierarchy. Paying a lot of respect.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
But I would still say this about Buffalo. We are so enamored, and rightly so, on Josh Allen. Their defense right now lost in that Lions win, was Detroit marked up and down the field, too. I don't know if you can win a Super bowl with this defense. Like it's one thing like Baltimore can be susceptible to the deep ball, but Matt Stafford was never sacked against Buffalo. And Detroit in this loss would have won 99 out of 100 games by scoring as much as they did and moving the ball as effortlessly as they did.
J. Mac
The good news is Bills won't be playing indoors in the postseason in the afc. Right. They'll either be at home or going to perhaps Kansas City, which doesn't have nearly the offense that the Lions or the Rams do. So, I mean, I don't expect Kansas City to do this to Allen and the Bills defense in the postseason, do you? I don't think they're capable of it.
Colin Cowherd
I just think when I look at Detroit and Buffalo, it was wildly entertaining.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
But my takeaway was that, that, that that doesn't play in February. At some point you have to make.
J. Mac
Stops, probably if you're doing a quarterback pyramid. Colin, is Josh Allen on his own tier above everyone else based on this season? Forget about historical. Just this season?
Colin Cowherd
Yes. I think he's different than everybody. Yes.
J. Mac
So it's Josh Allen, then the next tiers like Lamar Burrow, I guess. Mahomes.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. I mean, Mahomes continues to be the best late game, fourth down, goal line quarterback arguably in league history. So we can't just have recency bias. He doesn't have good tackles in Kansas City. They're still making it up as they go at wide receiver. So I Mean, he's. He's. This is, by the way, the best supporting cast Josh has ever had. I could argue this is the weakest supporting cast Mahomes has ever had. I mean, arguably, because Travis Kelsey's now way out of his prime. They can't get tackle right.
J. Mac
Well, they got hot Hollywood Brown coming back this week. Guys, get excited.
Colin Cowherd
Carson Wentz, he's something. He's something.
J. Mac
Maybe I don't think he's much, but Josh Allen, just unbelievable season. Bills are. Oh, my gosh, is that right? 14 point favorites against the Patriots at home on Sunday afternoon. That should be a fun one. Next up, we gotta go back to the Eagles. This heated sideline confrontation. So the Jalen Carter situation. He. He got a penalty for slapping a Steelers player on the head. And you can see Jalen Carter there, 98, laughing on the screen. Nick Sirianni wants to go talk to him, and the defensive line coach hurt is like, nah, Nick, you're not talking to him like he's like a bodyguard protecting the player. Colin, this was bizarre.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, yeah.
J. Mac
I think this is troubling. Eagles fans are like, oh, it's no big deal. Nothing. Anyway, here's Nick Sirianni talking about it.
Colin Cowherd
As Jalen was coming off the field, I. I was kind of getting after him there. And, you know, I think that there was part of me that wanted to go back. And then I went back, and what Clint was saying is like, coach, I got it. I got it. I've already handled it. And the knowing, you know, and so I had said something to him. Clint had said something to him. And it wasn't, you know, knowing Clint and how he's coached him for the past, you know, half a year that he's been here, I knew he had it. And so then, you know, it kind of went away.
J. Mac
Do the players and other coaches there respect Sirianni?
Colin Cowherd
Well, it's interesting. Would you do that to Belichick or Andy Reid? Would you do that? Would you do it to McVeigh? I mean, I. I think it. I honestly, when I see this stuff, you would not do that to a head coach. Because the great head coaches, you fear. You're not doing that, Sean.
J. Mac
It's like a teacher. You fear the teacher. The sub comes in, that's goof off time. They say, no sub. This is Nick Sirianni, the head coach of a pretty damn good Eagles team. And the worst part is Carter's like, laughing like, I don't want to talk to this guy. Look at him. Look at his face. He's like whatever that I just find that so disrespectful. And I know Eagles fans can poo poo this as much ado about nothing. That's a head coach.
Colin Cowherd
I know. Just not the way it's not the way it should. I mean, again, I think coaches sometimes have to back off. Like sometimes, you know, you see some of these college coaches throwing headsets, it's like chill out.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
But I think just people that are willing to do that to a head coach confront him, stand in his way. What does it tell you?
J. Mac
Not great Eagles commanders this week. This is interesting.
Colin Cowherd
I saw that line. Would you make of it?
J. Mac
Well, I would tell you I already bet the commanders, but I don't know what's up with A.J. brown. Like if he doesn't play, it's automatically fade. The Eagles offense is just so much worse without him. Final story Colin. Oh boy, here we go. Mike McCarthy has had a lot to deal with this season in Dallas. The dak injury, however, Dallas has turned it around, winning three of four, beating a bunch of bad teams. In his weekly radio appearance with local Dallas radio, Jerry Jones talked about McCarthy and defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer potentially staying, saying, I think you're beginning to see the best of Mike Zimmer, but maybe the best is still ahead of us. McCarthy has shown that his team can handle adversity. I give them both high grades this year.
Colin Cowherd
Ah, we said this three weeks ago.
J. Mac
Oh my gosh.
Colin Cowherd
Mike McCarthy won a Super bowl when?
J. Mac
Well, did tick tock exist back then?
Colin Cowherd
Is that your timeline?
J. Mac
It's been a million years. I don't even know if like the iPhone exists. I'm kidding about the iPhone, but like, that was forever ago. I don't want to hear that.
Colin Cowherd
Okay.
J. Mac
What have you done for me lately?
Colin Cowherd
Well, okay, yeah, but I don't think.
J. Mac
Any, by the way, 68 years old, Colin, just. You'll be 69 and in June.
Colin Cowherd
Well, there's nothing wrong with.
J. Mac
Nothing wrong with. I'm not an ageist. Just putting that out there. All right, Gabby, do you see anything worth bringing these guys back?
Colin Cowherd
Well, I don't think Mike McCarthy is a bad coach. I think offensively, I've said this before, they need to get a running back, another weapon, probably an interior offensive lineman. They need to move Micah and then draft another edge rusher. It's a great edge rusher year. If the Cowboys could get two first round picks, get a running back, replace Micah on the edge, and then go get dak weapons. I don't think they're miles away. But I don't think they have the courage to do what's available. Like I think Mike Vrabel is a better coach than Mike McCarthy. I don't think they'd do it. I think they should trade Micah and get two first round picks. I don't think they do it. I think there's a path to success for almost everybody in the league. Not name the Chicago Bears. I don't think Jerry's got the guts or the want to do it.
J. Mac
That list you just rattled off of what they need to do, that's about as long as my 11 year old's Christmas list. Okay. All the stuff Dallas has to do to get back to relevant. I don't even think there are 500 team next year. Oh, well, I mean again, let's remember Dak is making all of the money. Colin.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
So you're kind of hamstrung with what you can do. By the way, it's, we're what, eight days out to Christmas and Jerry Jones is doing radio interviews.
Colin Cowherd
What?
J. Mac
Come on, then you're an owner.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news. And thanks for stopping by the herd lie news. So listen, I root for young quarterbacks, believe it or not, because as we witnessed this weekend, when the quarterback play is good, football's good, nobody wants to watch Will Levis and the Titans like it's not fun. That's not what I want to watch. And so there's a headline today in Miami. One of the headlines is tua proves he isn't the Dolphins franchise quarterback in a loss to the Texans. So when I'm tough on a Tim Tebow, I was tough on him or tough on a Brock Purdy, or I'm, I'm tough on Tua. It's not because I'm a bully. Anytime you have to qualify things for a quarterback, you can't pay him big money. You can't have ifs. You know, Josh Allen's great period, Matt Stafford's great period. With Tua, if it's over 70 degrees, if he's healthy, if he has the fastest receiving tandem in the league, if he has an offensive coach, he's an if quarterback. Same with Brock Purdy. If Trent Williams is there, if McCaffrey's healthy, if he's got a Hall of Fame roster, if it's not raining, that's an if quarterback. So Brian Flores, by the way, was a meanie, right? Everybody said Brian Flores, he was too rough on him. But was he right? Mike McDaniels the media loves him, maybe because he's about the size of a sports writer. He's nice. Mike McDaniel is there. He's supportive, he's nice. They can't be good teams. Mike McDaniel can't beat good teams, and Tua can't play in the cold. And so even though Brian Flores was rough around the edges, we got to stop pretending this Tua thing is anything more than it is. He is an if quarterback. If it's warm, if they're at home, if he gets protection, if he's healthy, if he's got McDaniel's playbook. But I watched him against the Texans. It's all dink and dunk. You're starting to see the best quarterbacks as the weather gets a little cold, little frothy. The best quarterbacks are separating now. So, I mean, again, Matt Stafford, he's great. You're not doing a bunch of ifs. I mean, yeah, he is older, so you can't have four, your starting offensive linemen out. You can't have cluster injuries. But when you're considering signing Brock Purdy to big money, ask yourself, is he great if. If the weather's ideal, if Christian McCaffrey is healthy, if Kyle Shanahan's his coach, I've said this about Dak. He is great if he has the best offensive line in the league and if he has a top two or three running back. Zeke, that's the only time that we've gone, wow. Otherwise, I watch Dallas Cowboys now. Dax, obviously better than Cooper Rush, but J. Mac, you tell me. I watch the Cowboys play now. How much better are they? I mean, Cooper Rush is winning games. Cooper Rush beats Carolina. Dak would beat Carolina. So it's just ask yourself if you want to pay a quarterback $60 million, is he an if quarterback? And I think Tua is. I thought he had a rough game against the Texans. The Texans are not a great team. They've regressed from last year, and here was two after.
Steve Covino
I got to protect the ball.
Colin Cowherd
I got to play a better ball for our guys, especially in a situation where the team's counting on me to go and drive, drive our offense down to potentially tie the game up. And that's not what I did. And you know, that's. That's not how you win games in this league. I just need to be better in.
Steve Covino
All aspects with that.
Colin Cowherd
It's nothing against Brock, it's nothing against Dak, it's nothing against Purdy, it's nothing against Tua. But I always ask myself is he an if or is he just great? Great, I'll pay a 55 million up the more ifs I get. Okay, now we're in the 40s or now we're in the 30s. I love Sam Darnold, but if he got a defensive coach he wouldn't be the same player. Sam Darnold's a very very high end. If quarterback. If he gets Shane Steichen in Indy, he'd win. If he has Kevin O'Connell, Justin Jefferson, he'd win. But if you gave him the jets mess or Carolina's mess, he would struggle cause I've seen it. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd Weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am.

Hey, this is lavar Arrington here from up on Game and listen, I want to talk to you about something very serious for a minute, all right? Something personal to me and right now something that should be personal to you as well. In our country, the hate is at an all time high and it's like we're going backwards. The hate is winning. We can't allow that, all right? It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's enough. It's time for it to stop. We need to stop, regroup, change the momentum as a team because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team, so let's act like it. And when a team can't get it together, what do you do? You call a timeout. And that's what we need to do. Call a time out against hate. Let's think about what we say and do and when we see hate, when we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong and hateful, we need to call it out. Imma call it out. You need to do the same thing. Visit Stand up to all hate.org to help and join me in calling for a timeout against hate by following at what's up with Hate or posting the blue square emoji.

Fox College Hoops Friday takes over primetime as St. John's Rick Bettino leads the Red Storm against Providence in a big east battle. It all tips off Friday at 8 Eastern on Fox.
Colin Cowherd
Well, when the NFL decided to expand to 17 games in 18 weeks, and they're going to expand to 18 games in 19 weeks. In fact, 20, they'll probably add another buy. So the league now is becoming about attrition more than ever. So I grew up, it was 14 games forever, and then it was 16 games and now it's 17 games. And so this league now is about pacing, it's about attrition. It's about many teams get good after a mid to late season buy. So if you go to the last three seasons, those are the three years when the NFL has had 17 games and the winners of the super bowl are Kansas City, Kansas City and the Rams. And they all got really good late and they struggled at some point early or in the middle of the season. So again, Detroit one September and October, they are falling apart. I think they're the third best team in their division this morning. I think Green Bay is better this morning, healthier and better. I think Minnesota right now, this second is better slightly. Detroit is beat up. The. The defense is a mess. They can only win by shootout. Now Dan Campbell, I think, is getting a little edgier and riskier because he knows he can't make stops. That that onside kick call, that's just desperation. You're not doing that if you trust your defense. And it's like a major in golf. You don't win majors on Thursday and Friday. You win them on the weekends, often on Sunday. September and October are not winning this league. If you go to last year, who got hot late? Packers, Lions, Rams, Chiefs. So it is about timing as we've expanded this season. It's not like this in college football. In the NFL, the margins are tight. And Detroit early looked like Alabama was saving. They were blowing teams out. Remember who did this last year? Who got hot last year? Early to mid, it was Baltimore. Kansas City got hot late. Okay. This year, Detroit hot early. Go look at their injury list. It's insane. And I think it's changing the perception of the staff, that they know they have to take more risks offensively, defensively, special teams. So this is a December and January league. And I don't think Detroit right now. I think they got multiple issues. And Dan Campbell's answer is we got to be tougher. He was on local radio. You went 11 in a row, you know, and you lose and then the sky falls. You get used to eating filet and I'm talking all of us and everything's good. Life's good, you know, but you Forgot what it was like when you had nothing and you ate your molded bread. Sometimes you got to get punched in the mouth and remember what it used to be like to really appreciate where you are. And we'll do that, I promise you. If it's the other way, defensively, we give up 700 yards and we win by one point, you're going to see a smile from my ear to ear. Okay? I appreciate the alpha, but the truth is they got backups playing everywhere. And if you face Josh Allen or Green Bay's offense or now Minnesota's offense or the Rams offense, and you're using backups, they're backups for a reason. I mean, I love Dan Campbell, but the answer is not always. Try harder. Be tougher. They're running out of players. There's a reason. There's guys that are backups are on the scout team. They're just not as good. And so now I saved it to the end of the hour. J. Mac, I said, 11 people in America outside of Atlanta watch the Raiders and the Falcons. It was not good. We're all asking the same question, though. You're asking this this morning, why are they still playing Kirk Cousins? So Atlanta won, but could have lost on the final play. And it shouldn't have been that close because the Raiders, right now, they're in, you know, it's the worst team in the league. So here's the reason. Because Atlanta knows that if they play Michael Penix, Kirk Cousins, they can never go back to him. And they paid like 180 million. The staff and the front office convinced Arthur blank to pay 180 million. And now Arthur Blank saying, all right, we're like, we're like 13 games into this thing now. I, I told you my prediction. I was very pro Kirk Cousins, I said, I think he'll last until Thanksgiving, year two. Then it's Pennix. He ended up lasting about 10, 11 games. So he last, he, he lasted the half, not the year and a half. I, that, that was my take is. I mean, Aaron Rodgers, for the record last month, has played his best football. He's older than Kirk Cousins, same injury. So Aaron's actually played very well. I, I think that's what I thought I would say. Slow, slow, slow, slow. He'll be fine. Second year, he's just, it doesn't work. But here, this happens all the time. So they talked Arthur Blank into writing that check because Arthur Blank's like, are we going to draft a quarterback? Why pay for a court? I mean, they, they had this thing they were going to draft a quarterback and so, okay, we'll do it. Well, so now you have got to exhaust every last start. Last night, Kirk cousins had 11 completions. Now they won the game. But I, I think if you look at Atlanta's schedule, they're only a game back at Tampa and they have the tiebreaker because they beat the Bucks twice. So I think if Atlanta would have lost, they would have gone to Pennocks. But because they won and they're only a game back, and if you look at Atlanta's remaining schedule, it looks like Giants, Carolina are wins, Washington's a tough one, whereas Tampa's got to go to Dallas and then, you know, New Orleans, historically, you know, New Orleans is New Orleans. They can be tough. I think Atlanta is going to make a change. But I think the reason we're all asking why Kirk Cousins are not panicked is because they asked the owner to write a huge check and they wanted to just make sure there is nothing left in the tank. And Raheem Morris had been very defiant defending Kirk Cousins, but after last night's performance, he was not here. Yeah, here's Raheem. He's got to play better. And you know, obviously you got to go back, gotta be a look at everything, but you know, he wants to play better, he's got to play better. We got to find a way to get him to play better. And obviously we'll get to work tomorrow. And that's a part of our process. Right? You go, you look at the tape, you review with the people that needs to be reviewed with. You know, we get all the coordinators in the room, we'll talk with everybody. And we got to play better at the quarterback position. So last five games, Kirk Cousins has one touchdown and five picks. It's done. I just, it's done. And that, that's okay. His passer ratings like below 65. But Atlanta's not a Super bowl team. They're not. And they knew it. They're not a Super bowl team. And so, you know, again, this is about the big picture. But don't kid yourself. In this league, these billionaire owners do not like to write 180 million dollar checks. I mean, when Sean McVeigh was in less need, were pleading with Stan Kroenke, the first or second richest owner in the league to go get Matt Stafford. And they said, I will be paying Stafford and Jared Goff. It seems obvious, like, Stafford's great, Goff's very good, Stan Kroenke's rich. But Stan Kroenke has to be convinced. So I'm going to be paying Goff's Detroit salary and he better be good. So Stafford wins the Super Bowl. You're good because Goff got to a Super Bowl. Stafford got there and won and was great to know. Look past the Cooper Cup. So all this stuff comes down to Atlanta is like, okay, we talked this guy, Arthur Blank into writing this gigantic check. We got to make sure. We got to make sure. And I'm surprised. I am. I'm actually surprised. Aaron Rodgers has been as good as he's been the last two to three weeks. And Kirk Cousins has been as bad as he's been the last month. Little surprised by it. Not shocked, but a little surprised. All right, J. Mac, Eric B. Enemy and Nick Wright stopped by today. I want to go back to the Chicago Bears. We talked about this at the top of the show is it's funny because I think there are three franchises in the league that are broken. Bears, Jets, Giants. Now I think of those teams, the jets have the best players. The jets now have a left tackle. They have two receivers, a running back. I like their defensive front. Aaron now playing better, not great. Corners are excellent. So I, so I, I was asking this morning, I texted a friend in the NFL, I said if I'm Mike Vrabel, because he's the best candidate. The jets have the best collection of players. Many are not even paying yet. Breeze, Holland, Garrett, Wilson, Sauce, Gardner, you're not. You're still years away from paying them. The. The Giants have the greatest history. So the jets have the best players. The Giants have the best blue blood history. The Bears have the most talented quarterback. So I was asking an executive in the league, you're Mike Frable, and I think he is the number one candidate. If the Giants let go of Brian Dable, would you lean into the Giants history and their and their revenue flow? The jets roster or the Bears quarterback?
J. Mac
Okay, can I, I hate to ask a answer a question with a question, but what is Aaron Rodgers doing? Is he returning to the jets or not?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, he'll return for another year.
J. Mac
Okay. And we're cutting in new for the Giants. We're cutting the quarterback, Daniel Jones.
Colin Cowherd
So he's gone.
J. Mac
Okay.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. So the Giants have to find a quarterback.
J. Mac
Can't believe I got to admit this.
Colin Cowherd
The Giants have to find a quarterback. The jets have one for a year, maybe two, and the Bears have one. But they have more dysfunction than the jets or the Giants. They don't have the Giants history and they don't have the Jets Roster. So ask yourself as a listener or viewer, you are. You are the coach. Chicago has a star quarterback, but they're the biggest mess. The jets have Aaron playing well now, but it's Aaron. And the roster, however, is very good. It's a good roster.
J. Mac
Yeah, but Rogers trumps all that because you got to deal with that guy, his headache and nonsense, and then you know, is he going to leave in a year and you're starting over?
Colin Cowherd
Robert Sala had to. Mike Vrabel will run the franchise. Aaron will lose.
J. Mac
Rogers is going to do is Joe Rogan podcast and go on the former punter show stuff. I don't want any part of that. For me, it would be between Chicago and New York.
Colin Cowherd
Which New York?
J. Mac
The Giants? Not that I don't want to go. Why would you want to go to the Jets? They don't like who's the gm. What's going on with Rogers? Those are unanswered questions. All I know is Chicago. I got a lot of dudes. I got a great lineup. Owner seems to be staying out of it. The Giants owner, Mara, kind of.
Colin Cowherd
Look, I've been involved in the room.
J. Mac
You saw the video on Hard Knocks.
Colin Cowherd
I have been told Mara wants to keep Dable. The concern now is the locker room is quit. Now, I'm not saying it has, but you watch that game.
J. Mac
There's a report that the GM and the coach are not exactly a package deal. When you see that stuff, it's coming from somebody. I'm sure Dable, just like the Atlanta Falcons, is in self preservation mode. Hey, you guys want to dump the gm? Fine, fine, fine. I'm good here.
Colin Cowherd
Vrabel and Belichick, I'm told both believe the Giants should retain Dable. Belichick thinks that. I've been told in Brable they both think Dable's not the problem.
J. Mac
So how's this? I would. I would lean slightly Giants, because you get one of the top two picks. But I'm not taking that without seeing what happens to the Eagles in the postseason. What's going on in Atlanta? Is that job going to come open? Has Raheem Morris screwed this up enough?
Colin Cowherd
Ask yourself this. Oh, I got a good idea on the Giants. Move down. Don't take a quarterback. Next, I'm partnering with PayPal. Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 1: What the Bears Need Release Date: December 17, 2024
Introduction
In the inaugural hour of "What the Bears Need," Colin Cowherd engages in a candid and in-depth discussion about the current state of the Chicago Bears franchise. Joined by co-host J. Mac, the conversation navigates through the complexities of the Bears' organizational issues, compares them with other struggling NFL franchises, and explores potential solutions to revive the team's fortunes.
At the core of the episode, Colin Cowherd asserts that the Chicago Bears are a fundamentally broken franchise. He highlights numerous internal issues that have plagued the team:
Ownership and Management: Colin criticizes the Bears' ownership, describing them as being in the "bottom three" of team ownership categories. He points out the inefficiency of the team president and the inconsistencies of a young general manager whose performance has been "hit and miss" (03:12).
Coaching Staff: The current coaching staff, led by Brandon Staley, is deemed ineffective. Colin emphasizes that Staley has been "completely over his skis," drawing parallels between his mismanagement and the broader dysfunctional state of the franchise (07:45).
Player Utilization: While acknowledging that the Bears possess some "decent players," Colin notes that without strong leadership and a competent coaching strategy, the talent remains underutilized (10:30).
Notable Quote:
"If you can't and you're banged up, there are excellent doctors. The league creates millionaires every day. But they do ask that if you're capable of playing, that you play." (03:10)
Colin Cowherd proposes a bold solution to the Bears' woes: hiring Mike Vrabel as the head coach. He argues that Vrabel is the only viable candidate capable of steering the franchise toward success.
Why Mike Vrabel? Colin believes that Vrabel's leadership style and experience make him uniquely suited to address the Bears' systemic problems. He dismisses other potential candidates, including "college guys" and "lightweight coordinators," emphasizing that the Bears require a coach with the gravitas to enact significant change (22:15).
Potential Impact: Drawing a comparison with the Los Angeles Chargers, where a substantial investment in coaching led to positive results, Colin suggests that a similar approach with Vrabel could rejuvenate the Bears. He underscores the necessity for strong, defiant leadership, citing historical successes within Chicago sports tied to authoritative figures like Mike Ditka (25:00).
Notable Quote:
"There are no other answers. It's Mike Vrabel. That's it. No more lightweights, no more coordinators. This lift is too big." (19:50)
Beyond the Bears, Colin and J. Mac delve into the struggles of the New York Jets and New York Giants, identifying these teams as the other two "broken" franchises in the league.
New York Jets: Despite having a roster brimming with talent, the Jets falter due to lackluster management and inconsistent leadership. Colin praises the Jets for having "all sorts of good players" yet condemns their 4-10 record, attributing it to poor organizational decisions (33:00).
New York Giants: The Giants grapple with quarterback instability, particularly with Daniel Jones. Colin discusses the potential repercussions of releasing Jones and the challenges of rebuilding the quarterback position (50:12).
Notable Quote:
"You are the coach. Chicago has a star quarterback, but they're the biggest mess." (51:02)
A significant portion of the discussion centers around quarterback Sam Darnold and his potential move to the Indianapolis Colts.
Trade Analysis: Colin assesses the Vikings' dilemma in deciding whether to retain Darnold or let him become a free agent. He favors trading Darnold to the Colts, citing Indianapolis's ample cap space and supportive roster as conducive to his success (13:51).
Impact on Teams: The move is portrayed as mutually beneficial, with Darnold finding a stable environment to flourish and the Colts securing a promising young quarterback without significant financial strain (35:43).
Notable Quote:
"Sam Darnold's a very very high end. If quarterback. If he gets Shane Steichen in Indy, he'd win." (35:15)
Colin provides a comparative analysis of top quarterbacks, focusing on Josh Allen of the Buffalo Bills and Tua Tagovailoa of the Miami Dolphins.
Josh Allen: Celebrated as the "best quarterback in the NFL" this season, Allen's performance is lauded for its consistency and impact on the Bills' success. Colin underscores Allen's MVP-worthy season, noting his ability to elevate the team's offense (26:00).
Tua Tagovailoa: In contrast, Tua is characterized as an "if quarterback," reliant on favorable conditions such as weather and offensive support to perform effectively. Colin criticizes the Dolphins' reliance on Tua, suggesting that his abilities are overly contingent on situational factors (35:34).
Notable Quote:
"Josh Allen's great. Yes. I think he's different than everybody." (26:00)
The episode also explores the Dallas Cowboys' coaching and team dynamics under Mike McCarthy.
Coaching Performance: Colin acknowledges McCarthy's efforts but points out the need for strategic acquisitions to enhance the team's performance. He suggests that the Cowboys require additional running backs and offensive weapons to complement Dak Prescott's talents (30:17).
Organizational Challenges: Despite recent wins, Colin remains skeptical about the Cowboys' trajectory, emphasizing the necessity for bold moves to secure long-term success (31:26).
Notable Quote:
"I think there's a path to success for almost everybody in the league. Not name the Chicago Bears." (30:15)
Throughout the episode, Colin and J. Mac touch upon various other NFL-related subjects:
Jalen Carter Incident: They discuss a heated sideline confrontation involving Jalen Carter of the Eagles, highlighting issues of player conduct and coaching responses during games (26:00).
Super Bowl Predictions: Colin reflects on the importance of timing and team consistency in securing Super Bowl victories, referencing recent expansions to the NFL season and their implications (53:47).
Notable Quote:
"In this league, these billionaire owners do not like to write 180 million dollar checks." (36:49)
As the episode concludes, Colin and J. Mac invite listeners to reflect on the discussed topics, emphasizing the importance of strategic leadership and cohesive team dynamics in sports. They encourage fans to engage with the show through live editions on Fox Sports Radio and various streaming platforms.
Notable Quote:
"Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd Weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio." (14:00)
Conclusion
"Hour 1 - What the Bears Need" offers a comprehensive look into the multifaceted challenges facing the Chicago Bears. Through incisive analysis and robust discussions, Colin Cowherd and J. Mac present a roadmap for potential recovery and success, not only for the Bears but also for other struggling NFL franchises. The episode underscores the critical role of effective leadership, strategic decision-making, and player management in building a championship-caliber team.
