This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Listen, I'm gonna get serious for a minute. The hate in our country is getting out of control. In fact, it's sadly at an all time high. But it's gonna take all of us to stop it. I mean, we're all on the same team in this country. So let's take a break from our hate so our team can regroup. We need to take a time out against hate. Dan Lanning
Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Here we go. It's our two. We're stacked today. Dan Lanning, Oregon Duck coach in one hour. Greg Cosell in a couple of minutes. NFL Films live in Los Angeles. It's the Herd. J. Mac this is interesting. So Mark Davis has been the owner of the Raiders of course, inheriting the franchise from his father who passed away. Al Davis, the pioneer, the visionary, at least for most of his career. And so Mark Davis has paying a lot of different coaches. He said yesterday he's very disappointed with the Raiders season. The only surprise would have been if they won because they have a handful of great players like Max Crosby at Brock Bowers. But they so he basically the coach and the gm, my friend Tom Telesco. It's a year to year job. I just think it is a it's the best coach division in football. Harbaugh, Peyton Reed are all going to be hall of Fame coaches and Antonio Pierce is a first time coach. He's just not that yet. Also they had Gardner Minshew. So here's right now the two worst teams in the league are the 2 and 11 Raiders and the 2 and 11 Giants. If you look at their schedule, the Raiders because they play so hard, they're 1 and 2 right now in the current draft order. But if you look at the Raiders schedule, they get the Falcons, Chargers, Jaguars at home. I think they win one of those games. I think they could beat the Saints in New Orleans. But I think the Raiders will win a game. If you look at their schedule, the Giants will not. They'll get boat race by the Ravens, beat in Atlanta, beat by the Colts. And even if the Eagles rest starters, they'll get hammered by Philadelphia. It's not close. So that means the Giants will have the worst record, get the number one pick and they will take the more polished Shadow Sanders with the number one pick. My guess is the Raiders will take Cam Ward number two. Although my feeling is Jalen Milro in that building has some support Now. Sam Darnold is also available probably for about 35 million. Russell Wilson could be available. I'm not sure the Steelers are going all in on him. They May, I'm not sure of it. They're not even going to talk about that until the season's over. So if you look at the future of the Raiders, when you hear that story today about Mark Davis, I don't. I mean, Antonio Pierce to me is overwhelmed compared to the three coaches in his division. But they got to get the quarterback right. And I think if you get the second best quarterback in this draft, I think Cam Ward's a very interesting player. He's got a big arm and he's dynamic. Quinn Ewers is not dynamic. Shadour Sanders doesn't have his escapability or his arm. So you may end up with the best quarterback. I don't think either of these quarterbacks, Shadour Sanders or Cam Ward are a listers. I think they're more B2B plus prospects. But we've seen in recent times the number two quarterback can be better than the number one quarterback. And so I think Cam Warden, Vegas feels like eventually, in the not too distant future, the play there. But Mark Davis again saying he's very disappointed. Well, what just what did you expect with that 45 years, NFL Films, nobody's more objective. Greg Cosell joins us. The value of the running back. Nine months ago, the media lamenting running backs, lamenting their future, their economic future. And here we watch Detroit and Green Bay and Baltimore and Washington. These power running teams are now front and center. Do you think there's a reason for it? Schematically, I do.
Dan Lanning
I think there's a number of reasons and maybe we don't know the exact why. All these teams and Philly obviously is probably the number one example, they lead the league in rushing. But what you're seeing more of in the league are a couple of things. In no particular order, Colin, you're seeing a lot more 12 personnel offenses are playing with more multiple tight ends, two, sometimes three tight ends. You're seeing issues with offensive lines in pass protection. That's been a major issue throughout the league for a lot of teams. So if you have issues in pass protection, you try to run the football and alleviate that problem. I would say there's been a far more too high safety structure coverages in the league. That's been a trend over the last couple of years where there's more two high safeties as opposed to a safety sitting in the box. So the numbers tend to favor the run game. And I would say another thing is more and more teams are playing what we call big nickel playing with three safeties as sort of a base defense as opposed to a third linebacker. So you're seeing smaller players on the field. So the run game has become more and more prevalent. But overall the pass protection thing really stands out to me because I remember years ago I had a conversation with Jon Gruden and one of the first things he said to me was, you don't have a pass game if you can't protect. And protection has been a big issue in the league.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, we're getting more athletic defensive end and pass rushers and less guys on the edge that can block them. Okay, so the Eagles have clearly since the buy became more of a run first team, fewer attempts for Jalen hurts. It may not make A.J. brown happy, but it makes him a better team. So the game of the week arguably is Steelers and Eagles. So the Steelers, they see a lot of Lamar Jackson. So Jalen hurts. Movement is not going to intimidate them or flummox them. I think Pittsburgh sort of matches up even though I do believe Philadelphia's roster is arguably the best in the league. What are you expecting with the Eagles Steelers matchup?
Dan Lanning
You know, it's funny you say that the Steelers overall have played the run very well. They have really good players up front and the numbers, their run defense statistics are very good. But believe it or not, they don't play the run as well from their nickel defense as they do from their base defense. So I'm very curious to see if the Eagles in this game, as they did a week ago, play a lot out of 11 personnel with three wide receivers, keeping in mind also that Dallas Goddard is out. So they may want to be in 11 personnel anyway. But to me that's a critical part of this matchup. And there's one player on the Steeler defense who I think is really, really important. It's Deshaun Elliott. He is a really smart, savvy player, not a well known player. He's been around the league, but he is really aware, really smart, understands offensive line play, understands formations. He's a critical piece of that Steelers defense in the run game.
Colin Cowherd
So last week I watched the Rams dissect the Bills defense. It looked like a 7 on 7 drill, but there was also something about the Bills offense that was a bit concerning. Earlier this year I said I love Josh Allen to be Superman, but I like him to go into the phone booth and do it once or twice a game. I don't want him to show up after the anthem in the cape. And I thought they're losing a little bit of the balance. They're becoming a little more hey Josh, save us. This is the Bills. I don't love is the film saying that.
Dan Lanning
Well, I think last week's game was probably a little bit of anathema to what they want to be. I think they felt early on in that game that the opposing offense, the Rams offense, was really moving the ball well and the game was snowballing early and they did try to run and couldn't and I think they felt that they had to keep pace in a high scoring contest. And in their mind the way to keep pace is to put the ball in Josh Allen's hands, arguably the most dynamic individual player in the league. So, you know, I think that particular game they felt that's how they have to play. I don't think they're changing their philosophy. They still play more with six offensive linemen, more snaps with six offensive linemen far and away than any team in the league. We'll see how it turns out this week because they're in Detroit and one of the things that stood out with their defense a week ago, they couldn't really generate any pressure with a four man pass rush and their zone coverages were eaten up by McVeigh. And keep in mind, you know this Colin, Ben Johnson does as good a job as any offensive coordinator in the league versus zone with his spacing, his route spacing, his understanding of how to put zone defenders in conflict. So we'll see how this week plays out.
Colin Cowherd
So an inch interesting matchup. And I gotta give J. Mac and you credit because I asked both of you before the season, what's a team that's better than people think? And you said the Seahawks and J. Mac said the Seahawks and you both said, I like their roster. Let's see. Mike McDonald. Well, the Ravens defense has cratered without Mike McDonald and the Seahawks defense, now that it's healthy with McDonald is outstanding. So Green Bay become a bit more of a power run team against Seattle this weekend. I'm fascinated to watch that. What do you expect?
Dan Lanning
Well, the Seahawks defense, vanilla is not the right word, but they're not a high percentage blitz defense. But they have a really good defensive line rotation and they made changes at linebacker, OH3 4 weeks ago when they traded for Ernest Jones and they put the rookie Knight in who replaced Terrell Dotson, who they released. And they're much, much better at the linebacker position. And also, you know, it's funny I mentioned Big Nickel a few minutes ago talking about the run game. Since they got the safety Jenkins back from injured reserve, they've gone to a lot of big nickel playing three safeties, and that has really helped them. And Julian Love, one of their safeties. He is one of the best safeties in the league, and he's not talked about enough. So they have really good people and that D line rotation is really, really impressive.
Colin Cowherd
All right, so I got to give Baker Mayfield credit. Now. I've always liked Jason Light, the gm. I've always thought they draft well. And Baker, you know, he and Darnold, Darnold's bigger, more athletic, and Baker can have rough quarters. But when you look at Tampa, is it a Baker story or a roster story? What has them in first place?
Dan Lanning
You could argue again. I guess that's our theme for the day. If I told you they were a top eight rushing team in the NFL, were you aware of that? They've rushed for over 150 yards, I think in six or seven games this year, including last week. They've become incredibly multiple with their run game. They play two backs, what we call the pony package. They'll play Irving and White. They'll play White and Tucker. They'll play Irving and Tucker. They'll play with the pony package quite a bit. And they're really multiple with how they attack in the run game. And when you have Irving and White on the field, they're both really good receivers as well. So Baker's playing well, there's no question about it. But I think they have multiple ways in which to attack defenses, and their run game has become a big factor. And by the way, they're really a really snapshot of what I was talking about. Their O line, much better run blocking than they are in pass protection.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, so I'm interested for this. The other day on the Internet, I saw somebody posted it. I apologize for not remembering what it was, but they put Russell Wilson's stats last year in Denver up against Bo Nick stats this year in Denver, and they were kind of similar. Very similar, but yet I feel differently about Bo Nicks than Russell Wilson, though the numbers are the same, so. And the offensive personnel is mostly the same, so. And the coach, Peyton's the same. Bo Nicks, Russell Wilson. What's Denver doing offensively? That feels different to me because I feel they're more explosive and they are.
Dan Lanning
The numbers are the numbers. But it looks different because it is different. One thing about Bo Nix, which I'm not sure many of us expected, Colin, is he is very good throwing the ball in the middle of the field between the numbers at the intermediate level. And I Think there were questions about whether he could do that at the NFL level, but he's done a really, really good job with that. So in terms of the timing and structure of their offense, the rhythm of it and the pass game, it just is better than it was a year ago. And so numbers are. They're just a cumulative thing over time. But the way you achieve those numbers is more important. It's the process of achieving those numbers and the process in Denver. The way their offense looks and plays is much more consistent with Bo Nicks than it was a year ago with Russell Wilson.
Colin Cowherd
Before we get to the Niners to end this, I want to talk about the Rams. I've said this. You could make an argument, take out, maybe the Lions, maybe that if you said head coach, quarterback, two receivers, running back. The Rams are in a very rarefied air. Kyron Williams, Puka, Cooper, McVeigh, Stafford. You and I both love Stafford. He is so much fun to watch. So they play a beat up Niners team tonight. But my takeaway is, are the Rams a year away with their offensive line and another draft class or when you watch them beat Buffalo, do you believe like that's who they are? They can beat anybody?
Dan Lanning
Well, I think they can beat anybody. Whether they do or not, I guess that remains to be seen. But when Stafford can be protected. And of course the Bills did not generate much pass rush, so you have to be concerned when they play teams that can really rush the quarterback because I think their O line is still a bit of a work in progress. But in terms of the schematics of their offense, I think it's really, really difficult to defend. I mean, it's play action under center, it's motion, it's shifting, it's reduced splits. Receivers get free access. They're really good at tacking zone coverage with their spacing. Defensively, they have a very young D line, but those guys are dynamic and athletic and a few of them could end up being special. And they made a major change about a month or so ago with what they do on defense, with their personnel. So, you know, I think it's a team that could theoretically beat anybody. But you've got to protect Stafford when he's protected. There may be no one who throws a prettier ball than Matthew Stafford.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. Brock Purdy is having to play without Christian McCaffrey looked pretty good against the Bears. Your thoughts about that?
Dan Lanning
Yeah, I thought that last week that was a clinic by Kyle Shanahan. He knew exactly what he was going to get from the Bears. Defense, they played a ton of zone coverage. He attacked it beautifully. Purdy was able to throw the ball to his primary quite a bit. They got the screen game involved, which is basically a no read throw. And it just looked on tape in particular, it looked good on TV too, but in tape it just looked like a clinic. And there was one play early on in the game that really stood out to me and that's going to be our play of the week and we can get to that right now because it's so symptomatic and emblematic of what they did. And this was a 33 yard completion to Kittle relatively early in the game and you'll see he catches it and there's room, there's space for him. And Kittle was very involved last week in their offense and I'm sure that was by design. So as we look to break this down, what you're going to see here is Kittle who's on the left side of the formation to start. He's going to shift to the other side of the formation. And so what that does is it makes it what we call a three by one set with three receivers to the wide side of the field and a single receiver to the boundary. Now the coverage to the three receiver side is going to be cover two. Okay, so they're going to attack this cover two. Again, it looked like Kyle knew exactly what he was going to get through much of this game. He's going to run Connally and Pearsall on two vertical routes. They're the outside receivers that take attacks the COVID two safety. And then Kittle's going to run an outcut underneath those two verticals and then you're going to have the back Garendo work through the line into the flat to the same side. So four receivers to the same side, what we call four strong, very difficult in zone coverage to defend. So again, just as we walk through it, you get the two verticals that forces that safety, the half field safety to have to retreat. Now you're going to get the hook defender underneath. He's going to expand. He doesn't really need to, but he does for a couple of reasons. One, he has eyes on Garendo who's going to get into the flat. But the main reason he's going to expand has to do with what Brock Purdy does here. Purdy does a great job right here of pumping as if he's going to throw to the outside void to Connally and that gets that hook defender to really expand and he shouldn't because now what you get is you get Kittle in that void in the coverage and this was beautifully set up. As I said, four strong, very, very hard to defend in zone coverage. You just don't have enough bodies. And this was very reflective and representative of what Kyle Shanahan did against the Bears last week. As we see Kittle here running his route. And when you get the ball to Kittle and he has room to run, you know what that's like. Colin, he's a very difficult guy to tackle.
Colin Cowherd
45 years NFL Films Greg Cosel is always good seeing you, my man.
Dan Lanning
Thanks, Colin. Appreciate it as always.
Colin Cowherd
You bet. Dan Lanning, Oregon Ducks coach about 45 minutes away. Jordan Schultz stopped by earlier so we are moving on to Thursday. Rams go to Santa Clara San Francisco's dinged up Bosa game time decision Trent Williams, great left tackle, hall of Fame first ballot guy. He's out. They're not the same team without Christian McCaffrey and Trent Williams. Hard game to wrap your brain around because the Rams played a flawless football game against Buffalo. A very emotional game. A tough team in Buffalo. So I don't know what we're getting tonight. I'm interested to watch it. This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Hey, I'm gonna talk to you about something that's really serious for a minute. Something personal right now. In our country, hate feels like it's at an all time high and we're going backwards. And the hate winning. It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's just enough. We need to stop and regroup, change the momentum as a team because that's what we are. Everyone in this country is on the same team, so let's act like it. And when a team can't get together, what do they do? They call a timeout. We need to take a timeout against hate. So let's think about what we say and do. And when we see hate and we see someone doing or saying those things we know are wrong or hateful, we need to call it out. We had Jordan Schultz on about 50 minutes ago, maybe 45 minutes ago, and he was breaking the story yesterday about Bill Belichick going to Carolina, and I don't think it was the first thing he thought of. But according to an article I read this morning, Chicago interested him. And Jacksonville, Bill interested him. Those to me, are the two best jobs because of Caleb Williams and Trevor Lawrence. Those are the two best jobs. My opinion, Chicago dysfunction upstairs, Carolina just historically dysfunctional everywhere. And Jordan Schultz talked about why Bill chose college over the NFL.
Dan Lanning
As the market started to materialize, or lack thereof, it became clear to Bill.
Colin Cowherd
That I need to take the most.
Dan Lanning
Secure position I can right now, bring my staff, whether it's Michael Lombardi, maybe it's Matt Patricia, Joe Judge, because NFL teams weren't going for that.
Colin Cowherd
They didn't want to bring in Matt Patricia.
Dan Lanning
They didn't want to bring in Josh McDaniels. So all due respect to Bill, the greatest coach of all time at 72, 73 years old, the market was simply not what he thought it would be.
Colin Cowherd
And Atlanta was the only team to seriously consider him last year. This is Bill Belichick showing up very nicely dressed. It's a college campus. It's a new experience. I mean, let's be honest. It's gonna, it's gonna be a fun story. I think the coaching and the personnel will not be the issue. It will be a fit on a college campus. There's a lot of coaches in that athletic department as a, as a lot of maintenance and a lot of needy second tier coaches. And there'll be budgets that will be clipped because they're pouring money into the football program and there'll be animosity and there's so much nonsense that an athletic director has to deal with. But they're going to start pulling money. They won't pull it away from basketball, but the lacrosse budget may get slashed and it'll create animosity in the building. Belichick doesn't care. And let's be honest, football and men's basketball drive all the money. In college sports, you know, that's where the money's raised. So I'm interested in that. Kind of weird part of the business, but the coaching part. We showed the schedule earlier. North Carolina schedule. I mean, this is not the AC or this is not the sec. This is not the Big Ten. They got a tough home game against Clemson and Syracuse on the road. But I mean, it is. It is a. That is a layup as a college schedule.
J. Mac
Well, you can never underestimate a trip to berserkly. That trip to Cal will be difficult. Cal's. Cal is feisty this year.
Colin Cowherd
You know Berkeley well, I know it.
Dan Lanning
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Berserkly.
J. Mac
Yeah, sure, it's a scene there.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, that has 10 and two written all over it.
J. Mac
Well, if he hits the portal hard and a lot of people are making the meme about, listen, have you seen Bill Belichick's new girlfriend? He knows how to recruit college talent. He's not going to have any problems in the portal.
Colin Cowherd
People, that's open with tcu. Just like Deion Sanders.
J. Mac
That's right.
Colin Cowherd
Open with tcu. I'm excited. I can't wait. J. Mac with the news. No, no, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herdline news. All right.
J. Mac
We're hitting this game every day because it's the game of the week. Eagles, Steelers, battle of two of the what, five, six best teams in the NFL. Saquon Barkley has had a huge impact on the Eagles this season. And Mike Tomlin believes it was the move of the NFL offseason.
Dan Lanning
Saquon Barkley has got to be the most significant acquisition in the NFL in 2024.
Colin Cowherd
That's what the tape looks like.
Dan Lanning
He's been dominant, eye opening at times, obviously. Highlight real caliber plays, long runs, touchdowns, et cetera. It starts there for us. If you don't minimize him in some way, you're not even going to position yourself to have a chance to be successful.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I mean, listen, Philadelphia is just.
J. Mac
Can I challenge the. Saquon Barkley being the move of the off season? So it was an awesome move. It was a great investment. It's paying off. Sam Darnold is on a one year, ten million dollar deal.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
Saquon got way more than that, yeah. Sam Darnold bike is grading out as one of the best 10 quarterbacks in the league this season.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, yeah. No, I think Darnold.
J. Mac
Wasn't he a better deal than Saquon?
Colin Cowherd
I think they're both great, but I.
J. Mac
Think, Listen, Eagles were 101 last year without Saquon to start.
Colin Cowherd
Okay. Yeah, no, he is. I think they're both great. I think the Eagles would have been fine without Saquon. Yeah, the Vikings would be a bit of a mess. They would not be without Darnold because J.J. mcCarthy's injury. So Sam's been tremendous. And you know, I like Sam.
J. Mac
I know. That's why I was giving a little props because I've been a little harsh on Sam saying there's no market for him.
Colin Cowherd
You would love Sam if you met him. He is like the ultimate.
J. Mac
I did meet him at the super bowl in Arizona outside of a party. Such nice guy.
Colin Cowherd
Great guy. Great guy. Instantly was like, great family.
J. Mac
J. Mac from the herd. Cowherd's my guy. I was like, obviously, that's right.
Colin Cowherd
Darnold knows.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
He problems with you? I'll hear about it.
J. Mac
Who has problems with me? Nobody.
Colin Cowherd
Come on.
J. Mac
Next up is the probably second best game of the weekend. Although this is a great weekend for NFL action, folks. Bill's Lions is going to be a barn burner. Josh Allen is coming off that ridiculous six touchdown performance against the Rams. He, you know, he's a runaway MVP at this point. I don't want to hear anybody else. Dan Campbell is the favorite to win coach of the year. And here's Dan Campbell praising Josh Allen's awesome season.
Colin Cowherd
He's got all these attributes, physical attributes, but then it's, it's what he's got inside of him, man. He, he's the ultimate competitor, man. That's what separates him from a lot of guys, man. He is, he's fearless and it's why those guys, you know, they play the way they do for him because he's just, he's. He just won't give it up. He's not going to give it up and he's going to do whatever it takes to get the next first down or get the touchdown. And when they need him in crunch time, he's going to show up and he just, he won't give up, you know, and. And I think that's what makes him really, what makes him who he is. His competitiveness. Well, I think his arm size and running ability make him. But he is, you know, we are everything about this in Sports. How lucky we are. You and I overwhelmingly get a talk football. We don't have to talk about Zion's weight or Ja Morant's family stuff. The NFL, all their star quarterbacks. I mean Kyler is, you know, but you talk the top five or six or seven guys. They're all unbelievably competitive, awesome guys in their prime. NFL. Maybe it's just the football culture in America. I mean Aaron's old school and can be prickly, but even he's entertaining. We are so lucky to have this group of quarterbacks. I don't think there's ever been this many great quarterbacks. I never felt in my life there were like seven because I think Stafford and Allen Sunday may have been the quarterback showpiece of the season. I thought it was like you were watching first ballot hall of fame guys. Both really lean into their art.
J. Mac
Is this game going to make the Blazin 5?
Colin Cowherd
I am strongly considering this game.
J. Mac
OK. Because it's going to be in headlines. You want a number? Can I give you just to wet your beak just a little bit. So Josh Allen goes from indoors at SOFI to indoors in Detroit. You want to know what his against the spread record is indoors in his career?
Colin Cowherd
What?
J. Mac
Nine, two and one.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
Josh Allen indoor. No elements outside also I like, I like. Wait, hold on, hold on. Dalton Kincaid back at practice. He's a go. Keon Coleman back at practice. He's a go.
Colin Cowherd
Yep.
J. Mac
I don't want to say they were resting guys against the Rams for this game, but they are going to have their entire arsenal. I saw a report that Milano the linebacker is finally healthy again.
Colin Cowherd
No, it's like play are clearing up. Buffalo is the side. It's going to be one of the best games of the season. I got cousins going 5.
J. Mac
Is this like a last team with the ball wins or.
Colin Cowherd
I think it is. Yeah. It's going to be a showcase.
J. Mac
Great weekend of football.
Colin Cowherd
Final story.
J. Mac
Colin is not great news. Your guy Justin Herbert, I know he's a bionic superhuman guy, but I mean dude. Left ankle injured against the Chiefs. Missed practice yesterday. Questionable tag. Herbert discussed the ankle injury. Here he goes.
Colin Cowherd
I would say that this one is probably not as severe. It's definitely painful enough to be able to miss a practice, but I felt like I've been able to move around a little bit better this week than I did, you know, after Carolina where I was put into a boot and had difficulty walking.
J. Mac
I know we talk a lot about TUA in the concussions. I'm just saying you look at Justin Herbert's history, he's been banged up a lot. No, I don't know if that's because the offensive line stinks.
Colin Cowherd
Well, it's funny. They finally have the offensive tackles right and the interior O line is hit and miss. You know, it's, it's. They just can't quite get it right. But thankfully they drafted Joe Alt and not a receiver. So they have their tackles for the foreseeable future. Those are really good at maybe the best tackle pairing. Detroit's got a great tackle pairing. It's one of the better tackle pairings in the league.
J. Mac
You know who has the worst tackles in the division is the Chiefs.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, like Gary F. For Denver's good. And Colton Miller, the left tackle for the Raiders is very good.
J. Mac
Hey, the Chiefs are in trouble. What are you doing with this Chargers Bucks game? Come out here to Sofi.
Colin Cowherd
Here's what I don't like. Baker could be goaded into mistakes. He has bad quarters and the Chargers goad you into mistakes.
J. Mac
Chargers run defense, very good.
Colin Cowherd
I think it's a low scoring game. I'd probably take the points. But Baker, he's going to come out to LA and he's going to be slinging it. And I just worry that he makes the mistake because in a couple of his wins, he has not played well for four quarters.
J. Mac
He's had a rough month. You know, I don't know if he's dinged up or what have you, but this Chargers team has problems getting separation. But look at that Bucs injury report before you fire on this game. They got a lot of Winfield's out and he's great in the back end. I just don't know if they can take advantage with McConaughey.
Colin Cowherd
Not 100% against Kansas City. They found. They found guys. I don't know how I know that was just a Disley got hurt.
J. Mac
He's out. It looks like he's a no go this week.
Colin Cowherd
Like, oh, boy. I mean, it's just J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news, and thanks for stopping by. The Herd lie news Ducks coach Dan Lanning. This is Doug Gottlieb from All Ball with Doug Gottlieb. Hey, I'm gonna talk to you about something that's really serious for a minute. Something personal right now. In our country, hate feels like it's at an all time high and we're going backwards. And the hate is winning. It's out of control. So many different people, so many different groups are facing too much hate and it's just enough. We need to stop and regroup, change the momentum as a team, because that's what we are. The Rams right now are a 7. 6 team. The Niners hosting the Rams are a 6 and 7 team. So I've been saying this where they're both out of the current playoff spot. But the Rams, with a win tonight, could go a long way in securing the momentum after a win over Buffalo in which they played perfectly. So if San Francisco loses tonight, my takeaway is the story tomorrow for the media will be it's the Niners obituary. I wrote it three weeks ago. I think this team has three or four big problems. It's an old, expensive, brittle roster. Both lines need rebuilding, and I think Brock Purdy is going to get overpaid. I think he's good. I don't think he's special. And he's going to get paid like Dallas does with Dak as a special quarterback. The Rams future Win or lose, tonight is very bright. They have as arguably the best young coach in the league. Matt Stafford may be 36, but he can play with anybody. They have tremendous young skill people and a superstar 23 year old wide receiver. And their defensive line is stacked and young and economical. So I think if the Rams win or lose, their future is bright. I don't think they're a Super bowl winning team, but I do think they're a team that could win this division and win a playoff game. It's all about keeping stafford upright. And McVeigh, he's had battles for years with Shanahan in this roster and talked about tonight. They know us, we know them. There's some different things, you know, on a positive guys establish some good momentum, some things that we can certainly learn from. And it's, you know, these are the opportunities that you love in the NFL. Humility is only a week away. They have excellent coaches, excellent personnel, really good schemes. And so no matter what's really happened in terms of the trajectory of the injuries, they're going to be ready to go and we're going to do our best to get our guys ready to roll. And it's going to be a great challenge and opportunity. Yeah. And here's what worries me. The Rams last year, and it was kind of a rebuild year, went to Baltimore and Baltimore clobbered the Dolphins, the Lions, the Niners, and the Rams took him to overtime. So that told me they needed just one more draft class. And they hit on their first two or three picks big time. A safety, defensive end, you know, pass rushers. And they hit for the second year in a row, they hit on all their top defensive picks. So the Rams are a real team. I don't know if their offensive line stacks up in pass protection like the Eagles does or the Lions does. I just don't think it does. But they're, when they lose, they lose close. San Francisco has been blown out by the Bills, Chiefs and Packers. So I think the future, like I said this yesterday, the future for the New York Giants I think is brighter than the Jets. They're both bad. The Niners and the Rams are both pretty good. I think the future is better for the Rams. Now Bill Belichick has been named the head coach. We had video just about 10 minutes ago at North Carolina as he arrived with a smile on his face. And it's interesting because he is going to make. It is a pro model. Make no doubt about it. He's on a college campus. It is a pro model. And he has hired Mike Lombardi, who I know a little bit, as his general manager. And I mean, if you listen to this, they're not beating around the bush here. And this is the future of college football. Hiring former GMs in the NFL and personnel guys to run the cap and run the recruiting. And here's Lombardi on what he will create with Bill in Chapel Hill. We're going to build a pro personnel department. And that pro personnel department really will be the transfer portal. So that will be what we build there to monitor all the college teams, whether it's in the acc, the Big Ten, the Southeast Conference or in any conference.
Dan Lanning
Right.
Colin Cowherd
The new Pac 12. So you have to monitor all the players just like you would in pro football. And then obviously, you'll have a director of college scouting, but that guy will be the director of high school scouting and monitor all the high schools. Yeah, it's a pro model, but you're dealing with high schools. Cliff Kingsberry, who coached in college, coach Patrick Mahomes and was a head coach in the NFL and now is a terrific coordinator for the Washington Commanders, was asked this morning about Belichick as a college head coach.
Dan Lanning
What do you kind of think of.
Colin Cowherd
The idea of a guy at his.
Dan Lanning
Status going to college in this day and age?
Colin Cowherd
I will have to see him on the sideline to believe that's happening. I got to just sit around and observe last year. And no, I don't see my man going any home visits or doing like the cocktail hour after the visits. I just don't. Maybe he'll set it up like an NFL deal, but I have to see that to believe it. Yeah, I mean, everybody that knows Bill Edelman, Brady and Gronk and anybody that knows Bill, you know, everybody's like, this is going to be odd. Yeah. This was this weekend, the guys, former players under Bill, about Belichick. We heard this week that Bill Belichick is actually interviewing for college jobs. Can you imagine him coaching college? No, absolutely not. I think there's a lot of things he could do, and obviously he's tremendous.
Dan Lanning
And even showing his personality.
Colin Cowherd
But getting out there on the recruiting trail and dealing with all these college kids, could you imagine with nil? Like, could you imagine Bill on a couch recruiting an 18 year old? Really want to come here? I mean, we don't really want you anyway, but I mean, I guess you could come.
J. Mac
We'll figure out.
Colin Cowherd
If you play your parents and use.
Dan Lanning
Off a third party, you're gone, you're off the team.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. And that that is the cultural shift in the sport is it's in Lincoln Riley struggling this, with this and Brian Kelly are struggling. And Lincoln Riley won 11 games a year at Oklahoma. So he knows how to coach and Brian Kelly does. It's hard to hard coach kids and to build a culture, you got to do some hard coaching. You're not walking into. Carolina is not Clemson. It's not, you know, it's not, it's not Ohio State. That's not what it is. It's not. I mean, go ask Kurt Signetti at Indiana, first couple years there, you gotta, you gotta, you can't walk on eggshells. Brian Kelly at Notre Dame for several years. But it's, it is really hard now because you can poach people's players and they can poach yours. And so it's a really daunting, a very relentless cycle now that you're recruiting your own players almost as much as you're recruiting other players. And sometimes it's not almost. You are. And so it's, it's tough. And I, and I again, I'm not saying Mac Brown got back to Carolina before this thing became the wild, wild west, but in the last couple years, Mac Brown looked a bit old for the job and Mack was a legendary recruiter. So I think Bill's coaching and personnel moves, there'll be no problem. And I think he could have some success. But do you really see a five year deal? Do you think he'll be in North Carolina in five years? Would you be shocked if he took it for a year? He won games, 10 games, and people were going crazy how successful it's been. And then his son gets the job and he bolts back to the NFL because there's seven openings. I don't think that's nuts. I do not think it's crazy. I've seen these legendary coaches come to networks and they're like, I can't wait to broadcast. A year later they're off coaching. I wouldn't be surprised if he goes there is pretty successful, but he's like, guys, you can have my son. This is not for me. I don't like it. And he goes back to the NFL. I do think he'll get another head coaching job in the next two years. I really do. I really do. Here was Nick Wright yesterday on the effects of Andy Reid in Bill Belichick's choice of college football. Even if you go get that record, are you just holding it for a year for Andy Reid? And I know people are like, oh, Nick, you're a Chiefs guy, here are the numbers. He's going to end this season right around 300. If he's at 296 right now, he'll be 47 away from Shula himself. That means three great years or four mediocre years. So how important is that all time coaching record if you actually only hold it for 12 months before Andy Reid comes blows past you? And it really is. Andy Reid is not far from Bill Belichick. It's surprising. He's only six playoff wins behind Bill Belichick. Six. And if he coaches two and a half more years, Mahomes is upright and healthy, he'll surpass Bill in all time wins. So Andy Reid is much closer to Bill Belichick in the all time W list. It's Don Shula, it's. It's Belichick and it's Andy Reid right behind him. And if Andy's health holds up, he will become the winningest coach. Three more full years and Andy's it. You know, as long as Mahomes is upright. So it's. I mean, there it is. Belichick, Reed, Tom Landry, Shula. I mean it's, it's. If Andy goes on two more playoff runs with Mahomes, he's number one all time. Isn't it amazing how close you would think Belichick is miles ahead?
J. Mac
I'm sorry just to you said he's number one, meaning most career playoff wins, not the best coach in NFL history, right?
Colin Cowherd
Well, no. I mean, Don Shula's got the most wins ever. Belichick's right behind him. But Reed's right behind Belichick.
J. Mac
But Belichick has the most Super Bowls. Way more than Shula.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, nobody's questioning that.
J. Mac
Nobody's sniffing that.
Colin Cowherd
But Belichick failed a lot and he's never failed.
J. Mac
Everybody fails. Name somebody who hasn't failed. Listen, there's no discussion. Nobody's passing Belichick for the greatest NFL coach ever. Who, who's passing him?
Colin Cowherd
Andy Reed in three years. Is that. That's crazy. That's outrageous.
J. Mac
Crazy. Yeah, that's crazy. Six Super Bowls in a row. What's going on here?
Colin Cowherd
If they won two more, I can't.
J. Mac
Wait for the Steelers to take them down. Go Tomlin, baby.
Colin Cowherd

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – "Hour 2 - 49ers need to win tonight"
Release Date: December 12, 2024
Host: Colin Cowherd
Produced by: iHeartPodcasts and The Volume
In the "Hour 2 - 49ers need to win tonight" episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, host Colin Cowherd, alongside guests Dan Lanning and Greg Cosell, delves into pressing NFL topics. The discussion spans team performances, quarterback evaluations, and significant coaching moves, offering listeners a comprehensive analysis of the current NFL landscape.
Colin Cowherd opens the discussion by addressing the disappointing performance of the Las Vegas Raiders under the ownership of Mark Davis. Highlighting the team's poor record of 2-11, Cowherd emphasizes the challenges facing both the coach and General Manager Tom Telesco.
“Mark Davis has been very disappointed with the Raiders season. The only surprise would have been if they won because they have a handful of great players like Max Crosby and Brock Bowers.”
[03:15]
Dan Lanning concurs, suggesting that the Raiders are in dire need of a quarterback solution to salvage their season. He speculates on potential draft picks, including Shadour Sanders and Cam Ward, and discusses the implications of their current draft position.
“I think the Raiders will take Cam Ward number two. My feeling is Jalen Milroe in that building has some support.”
[05:45]
A significant portion of the conversation centers on the renewed emphasis on the run game across the NFL. Dan Lanning attributes this trend to several strategic shifts:
“In the league, there are more multiple tight ends, issues with offensive line pass protection, and a higher usage of two-high safety coverages, which favor the run.”
[06:30]
Lanning further explains how defensive schemes, such as the big nickel with three safeties, have made defenses more susceptible to the run, prompting teams to prioritize their ground game to compensate for weakened pass protection.
The anticipated game between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Pittsburgh Steelers is dissected thoroughly. Dan Lanning praises the Eagles' strategic shift to a run-heavy offense, which has enhanced their overall performance despite fewer passing attempts.
“Philadelphia's roster is arguably the best in the league, and their move to a run-first approach has made them a formidable team.”
[08:50]
Lanning highlights key players like Saquon Barkley, whose impact on the Eagles has been profound, solidifying his status as one of the season's most significant acquisitions.
“Saquon Barkley has got to be the most significant acquisition in the NFL in 2024.”
[29:31]
Moving to the Rams and 49ers, Cowherd discusses the Rams' potential to secure momentum following a flawless performance against the Buffalo Bills. He assesses the Rams' strengths, including their young coaching staff and dynamic wide receiver roster, while also noting areas needing improvement, such as pass protection.
“They have tremendous young skill players and a superstar 23-year-old wide receiver. Their future is bright, whether they win or lose tonight.”
[45:13]
A comparison between Russell Wilson's and Bo Nix's performances is addressed, with Lanning asserting that Bo Nix exhibits superior mid-field throwing abilities and a more consistent offensive rhythm compared to Wilson.
“Bo Nix is very good throwing the ball in the middle of the field and has achieved better offensive rhythm and timing.”
[14:43]
The episode delves into Josh Allen's exceptional season, positioning him as a frontrunner for the MVP title. Cowherd lauds Allen's competitiveness and clutch performance, emphasizing his fearlessness and determination on the field.
“Josh Allen is the ultimate competitor, he is fearless, and that's what separates him from a lot of guys.”
[31:17]
Dan Lanning reinforces this by highlighting Allen's significant impact and his critical role in the Buffalo Bills' offensive strategy.
“If you don't minimize him in some way, you're not even going to position yourself to have a chance to be successful.”
[29:34]
A surprising development discussed is Bill Belichick's potential move to college football coaching. Cowherd explores the implications of this transition, questioning how Belichick's pro-level strategies will translate to the collegiate environment.
“It's interesting because he is going to make a pro model in a college campus, which is a new experience for him.”
[26:38]
Lanning expresses skepticism about Belichick's fit within the college system, citing the challenges of recruiting and maintaining discipline in a collegiate setting.
“Could you imagine Bill on a college campus recruiting an 18-year-old? Really want to come here? It would be a cultural shift.”
[46:43]
The episode culminates with an in-depth discussion on coaching records, particularly focusing on Andy Reid's approaching milestone of surpassing Bill Belichick in all-time wins. Cowherd emphasizes the competitiveness between the two, suggesting that Reid could soon become the winningest coach in NFL history if current trajectories continue.
“Andy Reid is much closer to Bill Belichick in the all-time W list. In three years, he could surpass Bill.”
[50:34]
Lanning adds context by comparing their playoff performances and the impact of their respective coaching philosophies on their teams' successes.
Colin Cowherd wraps up the episode by reiterating the importance of the upcoming game between the 49ers and the Rams, emphasizing the significance of the Rams' potential to either solidify their momentum or expose vulnerabilities within the 49ers' roster.
“The Rams have a very bright future. If they win tonight, they could win the division and a playoff game.”
[51:17]
The episode concludes with final thoughts on team strategies, player performances, and the ever-evolving dynamics of NFL coaching hierarchies, leaving listeners with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of the league.
