Hour two and a Monday Matt Hasselbeck five minutes away. We're live. It's the Herd last night as as the NFL gets Niners edge pass the Chicago Bears drama in Pittsburgh. Who's left offensively to help Aaron Rodgers, San Francisco and Seattle. How good is that? It is great to have you in on a Monday. Let's not waste any time. Where Colin was right Where Colin was wrong On a Monday. Where Colin was right. Well, well, well. Slinging Sammy Darnold. You know quarterbacks with consecutive 13 win seasons in NFL history. It's Brady Manning, Rogers Favre and Sam Darnold. Yeah, he's in pretty good company. Just goes to show your first job isn't always your best. Sam Darnold never worries about the occasional mistake. Always looking forward. He and jsn. By the way, that has got to be a top five combo going forward. Where Colin was wrong. Probably been a little tough on Brock Purdy. Or maybe he's just getting better because the last month Brock Purdy's aggressiveness, efficiency, movement has been stuff for the ages. And I know Garoppolo was Good in San Francisco. It wasn't this good. He wasn't this aggressive. I thought yesterday was as good as he's played. I mean just making ad libbing, playing within structure. And I like the fact that he throws a pick six and it doesn't get him down. It doesn't change his mood or body language. Number two, red zone offense. I know Kyle Shanahan's great, but this is the best quarterback play he's had since. Since Matt Ryan won the mvp. Where Colin was right. Mike Vrabel. I had predicted New England will be a playoff team. They're going to be the double your win total team. They tripled it and they fixed everything in one season. Remember when we didn't like their wide receiver room? Well, their top five offense, top five defense and they've immediately surpassed Sean McDermott year one. That's not the way it should be now, now, Drake May's good. Is he this good? I don't know. But this was to me the easiest off season call. With all that free Agent Money, Josh McDaniels, Mike Vrabel and an improving Drake May, this team's going to get good fast. And they did where Colin was wrong. The Colts have lost six straight. Maybe they shouldn't give up two first round picks for a cornerback. Sauce Gardner. I have defended the head coach and the GM, but even the Philip river story, he went 0 for 3. Daniel Jones, the truth is who he is sort of surfaced eventually. Right now they're not close to Jacksonville offensively in their own division and they're a mile from Houston defensively. So at best they are the third best team in a pretty wonky division. I was wrong. Where Colin was right. I never bought into Aaron Glenn. I mean, they've been blown out four straight games by 23 or more. It looks like the players have quit. How can you be a defensive coach and not have a single interception all season? That's kind of historically embarrassing. It's okay. Nat Hackett, you knew early. David Culley, Freddy Kitchens, Jim Tomsula. Like some coaches feel like coordinators, not head coaches. But this has been pretty bad. This has been pretty bad where Colin was wrong. I figured Chip Kelly, Pete Carroll, Geno Smith would at least be interesting. I didn't know they'd be awful. I, I mean Geno can throw the ball and Chip Kelly and Pete Carroll and they got housed yesterday by the New York Giants. Now the good news is they have the number one pick and they're going to draft a quarterback out of Indiana. But I, I Almost think, Max Crosby, is it time to trade Max Crosby? He deserves better. And you can get more draft capital because they feel like, the Raiders feel like they are a mile away. Where Colin was right? Excellent NFL reporter Ian Rapaport Saturday reported. Yes, the Giants, if they had the number one pick, would consider moving Jackson Dart and drafting Fernando Mendoza. Why wouldn't you? Jackson darts three and eight, not eight and three. Jackson darts fine. But if your scouting department says Mendoza has a much higher ceiling, then you go listen to your scouting department. The Giants offense has been mostly dismal for a decade. Everything has to be on the table when you're the Jets. When you're the Giants, you know, everything has to be on the table. You can't say, well, we've got our, we got our franchise quarterback. As I've said, I like Jackson Dart. He spends more time in the blue tent than an REI manager. Not good enough. Where Collin was right, finally, J.J. redick. This was my concern when the Lakers were red hot without LeBron James. JJ Redick admitted, Since LeBron returned, we haven't been organized offensively. There's just too many possessions that we are wasting. This is what I said. LeBron won't play defense anymore. And all you're doing is taking the ball out of Austin Reaves or Lucas. Hand in this idea that, well, LeBron will make it work. Yeah, but I mean, he's been the best player in the league for about 15 year stretch. He's also got pride. So, and, and, and so this is a disjointed, uneven roster. The pressure now on Rob Pelinka to make some moves, or maybe it's sort of a lost year. But JJ Redick saying the honest part out loud and the uncomfortable part. LeBron coming back has made things a little difficult too. Colin right? Colin wrong on a Monday. And with that, Matt Hasselbeck, 18 years in the NFL, joins us. I gotta say, maybe I have, maybe I have trait bias where I like my quarterbacks to be big and strong. Maybe I have draft bias where if you're the last guy taken in a draft, although Kurt Warner and Tony Romo were undrafted, but the last three weeks with Brock Purdy, now that his toes healed, red zone, he's aggressive. I mean, I, I watched last night, I'm like, yeah, you can get to the super bowl with that. I guess I just whiffed right. I mean, I was just wrong on him.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, yeah, you're coming around. I mean, I like to see it. I mean, I think it was a long time you were complaining about certain things, but you're not alone. Listen, he doesn't pass the eye test like you see him. He looks like he might be a college kid or a high school quarterback. He doesn't wow you with those tangibles, but his intangibles are off the charts. And when you talk about a guy like Kyle Shanahan or John lynch or these guys who understand how to evaluate quarterbacks, he clearly is their guy. And you talk. You listen to his teammates talk about him, whether it's Trent Williams or Kittle or McCaffrey, they're like, no, no, this is our guy. This dude's a dog. He's a beast. And I think we saw that the other night. He plays on rhythm. He plays from the pocket, outside the pocket. I think Kyle Shanahan does a really nice job with these shorter quarterbacks, getting them outside the pocket just as much as they're inside the pocket for better vision, you know, and he's got moxie. He started 40 games at Iowa State. There's something to playing when you're in college and not sitting and watching. And, you know, I. I think he's a little bit more agile than people realize, defenders included.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, no, I'm. I'm. He is way more athletic than I've ever given him credit for. He's been dinged up a little in his career. For the first time in a long time, he's healthy and he is. He moves well. Now, I said, if you're the Bears, my bigger issue is I don't think. I thought they were reactive on defense, not proactive. Salah's got nothing to work with, and he's blitzing. He's mixing stuff up. He's trying to. Caleb a little uncomfortable. He made him just uncomfortable enough on that final play. But overall, I kind of feel like second straight game, Caleb didn't get sacked, didn't have an interception. I think you got to feel pretty good if you're Chicago, you lost a track meet. You've been winning all these games. If you're going to lose, you can lose to the hottest offense in the NFL. What was your take on the Bears?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, well, I. I think three games in a row where Caleb's played really well and. And really encouraging. This was just a great offensive matchup. You know, you got Ben Johnson on one side, Cash, Kyle Shanahan on. Really fun offensive game. If you love defense, you're probably, you know, pulling your hair out just a little bit. But explosive plays, trick plays, quarterbacks being really elusive, doing it on time, doing outside. You know, I think there's still opportunities. One team had to go home, the loser. Right. And so when you watch the film the next day, you can usually point to three to five plays that if we just make one of those plays, we win the game. And you heard Chris Collinsworth on the broadcast last night, you know, allude to it like, man, if we just had a tick, if you could have just found a way to get the ball to this guy this one time. And that happens in every game. And I think that's why this game was so fun to watch. It's also why I think everyone's excited if it, if it happens again. But no, it was a good quarterback battle last night. And I got to give credit to both guys played really well. Just one guy made the play at the end and the other guy didn't. And, you know, they might meet again and it might be different the next time.
Jason McIntyre
So much fun. Such a fun NFL game. I'm going to support the Bills going for it. I thought the Eagles defense was on the field the entire second half. You have Josh Allen, you're at home, you're favored. I'm going to go with it. I'm going to, I'm not going to be a backseat guy. Were you okay going for two in Buffalo?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, I would have been good either way. Like, either way you could make the argument for not, you know, the Eagles hadn't done much offensively, but then again, we're at home. I got Josh Allen as my quarterback, I've got a two point play. This is what happens when you decide on your two point play the night before or maybe even two, two days before in an air conditioning room with a group of people, you write on your big call sheet, okay, if we've got fourth and goal to win the game, our two point play is what, what are we calling? And you feel really good about it sometimes. And I bet you they felt really good about this play. The play worked and I, you know, Josh Allen, he's got to be kicking himself 99 out of 100 times he makes that throw. Guarantee it. It was kind of shocking to see him not make it now. He's banged up, he's got a real bad foot injury. He, maybe he can't push off, feels the pressure, bad weather, all the stuff. But no, I'm, I'm in favor of going for that and, and I, and I'd be in favor of, of calling the exact same play again in the exact same situation. I'd feel good about the quarterback making the play.
Jason McIntyre
The the Eagles are so weird. I I can't even wrap my brain around. A.J. brown was feeling it. The short passing game was working and then they just pulled the plug on the offense. They have four of the worst offensive halves in the league this year and that's counting all the bad offenses. Explain to me what happens as well as you can with this offense about every other week.
Colin Cowherd
Who knows, man? Like if you got, if you're an Eagles fan, like, who knows? This is what I would say about it though. I'm not. A win is a win, right? And we're not going to apologize for that and all this stuff, right? And I've gotten on here before and have said, hey listen, it would be better if the offense, instead of turning the ball over and playing sloppy and stuff like that, it would be better if you took a knee three times and let your punter punt. I mean, I remember doing the Rams Seahawks game earlier this year and the Rams Darnold had an uncharacteristic day through four interceptions and I said if the Seahawks just would have taken a knee three times and let their punter punt, they would have won. And that's kind of the mindset that it felt. Philly went with a little bit in terms of hey, let's play safe, let our punter punt. Our defense is playing actually really, really well. 13 nothing lead most of the game. It's a scary lead. 13 points. No one really loves the 13 point lead. It's a weird, I don't know, maybe I've been burned too many times. But then you let your punter punt and then just, you know, don't step on the line when he downs a perfect punt on the one yard line. You know, stuff like that. Execute well on special teams and help your defense play. But no, if it's a little, it's a little frustrating when you're used to Phillies offense being good. But there is a complimentary football aspect to this where just don't screw it up when you're up by two scores.
Jason McIntyre
So it's, I mean it's just so Pittsburgh. So I like healthier Baltimore even if Huntley plays because I think he's a pretty capable backup. I watched him beat the Bears this year. He's good. Derrick Henry, Zay Flowers I Harbaugh I this is rough. Washington broke his arm. DK is not around. I don't even know who their number one receiver is. Mvs. They don't have really a dependable run game and they Quit on it sometimes. The. I like Baltimore in the final week. Do you? And where are you with Pittsburgh today?
Colin Cowherd
Well, I start with Baltimore. I don't. For whatever reason, Lamar Jackson just doesn't look like Lamar Jackson this year. You know, I don't know if it's on the field, off the field. It's not the same Tyler Huntley, you know, for. For whatever reason, when he's in the game, they lean more on Derrick Henry. They use a flowers in the run game. Like they get a little bit more of what I think about Baltimore Raven football. Like we're going to be the hammer, not the nail. We're not going to get too cute now. Now, the Steelers on the other side, they're not operating at full strength. You mentioned dk Huge loss. Washington huge loss. I would love to see Aaron Rodgers under center more. Using his hall of Fame brain, getting them into the right play call, using his cadence, taking advantage of free plays. It's something. The things that he does better than anybody in the world, really. But this idea of him just dropping back an empty and throwing to his guys that he feels comfortable with, even if it's not a great matchup, that's not winning. I just don't think that's their best formula. That's kind of what he tried to do. Aaron Rodgers did last year with the Jets. That's not the thing to me. I think where he can be exceptional is when he's just sort of running the offense, you know, using all the skills and experience that he's had that he has and helping the players around him, mainly the running backs, be successful. And again, I think it's like point guard, not shooting forward. And if he can do that, they can be. They can actually do some damage in the playoffs. But they got to kind of like, I think take a hard look in the mirror and say, okay, what. What do we really do best right now?
Jason McIntyre
So, you know, it's really interesting. I'm watching Green Band Malik Willis and he goes in Tennessee and Mike Vrabel's in win now mode. And so they don't pay a lot of attention to Malik. They're not going to be there to monitor him and mentor him. He goes to Green Bay and there's no necessary urgency. You know, Jordan loves your franchise quarterback, so gets a really good coach, Matt LaFleur, he gets a really good organization. He gets really good players. And then you watch Malik Willis after a couple years and you're like, oh my, this kid can. This is why he was so well Thought of. He also went to a small school in college, Matt. So the NFL was a huge jump. And that, you know, that doesn't help. And so I watch him now and I watch the packers and I'm like, Jordan loves the franchise guy. If you ran a team in this league because there's not going to be many quarterbacks in that first round. Do you think Malik Willis, I look at that talent and I'm like, is he a franchise guy or is it just lafleur? The environment and he's just a really, really talented bridge guy. But I'm watching Saturday night and I'm like, man, there's a lot there. Like I get why he was drafted out of Liberty so high. Would you roll the dice on Malik Willis? Is it environment or is that kid a franchise? What do you, what do you see?
Colin Cowherd
Are you as your starting quarterback in free agency? Is that what you mean?
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, just go for it and sign him to a three year deal.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, it's interesting because I remember when he came out, a lot of people liked him. Some people didn't. And you know, I remember he was the third string quarterback in Tennessee and he was an afterthought and it was about Will Levis and Mason Rudolph and these guys and you know, clearly your environment does matter. Green Bay is one of those places that even back when I was the backup there, even before I got there, Brett Favre, Mark Brunel, Ty Detmer, Steve Bono, like there's like a lot of guys there in the room, they overinvest in the quarterback position. And Malik is one of those guys in a long list that play really, really good football. I think Matt LaFleur does a great job. I think Kyle Shanahan does a great job. I think Sean McVay does a great job. There's a lot of these guys that come from that, that Kyle Shanahan, Mike Shanahan, Gary Kubiak, now Clint Kubiak, Tree. Where we have a system that we believe in, it's not all on you to go play playground ball. You just have to trust us, be coachable and let the offense work for you. Do it's sort of like just add milk and stir kind of deal. And some guys are able to make that jump and some guys aren't. And I think Malik is a great example of a guy that plays within the system, has great coaching around him and clearly is a problem for defenses. He's kind of overachieved for what his expectation level was. Would I make it? Would I make a Jump on him. If you're running that exact same offense, I think you can do that. Yes.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Yeah. It's fun to watch. Okay, so Seattle plays San Francisco. And it's interesting just to be instructive. Niners opened as a one and a half point favorite. The Sharps, the wise guys, all bet Seattle. And I was telling J. Mac, he loves Purdy, and I said, brock's one of those guys that if you give him time and you don't speed him up. Sam Darnold's a little like this, that Brock is highly effective. If you speed Brock up. If you speed Darnold up, up, then you, because these guys are aggressive, throw the ball down the field. Well, San Francisco is not going to speed Darnold up. They have no pass rush. Seattle can speed Brock up. So I think Seattle is probably the play here. What do you envision? You know Seattle so well. Seattle, San Francisco, you've seen both so many times. What is that going to look like?
Colin Cowherd
Well, this is a really good Seattle team, and I know people have been sleeping on them until probably this morning. You know, on the national scene, this is probably the best defense they've had in a long, long time. This is the most points they've scored on offense, I think, ever. You know, you go back to week one, though. In week one, Seattle played San Fran and they just didn't look like themselves. And sometimes that can happen when you play your friends. And Clint Kubiak and Sam Darnold, they came from San Fran. Kyle Shanahan, like, they know our offense and they, it was unrecognizable. What they decided to be on offense in that first matchup. They didn't have a fullback in the game. They were an empty formation so much, and I think they just got to get back to, hey, this is our identity. And I don't care what you know about us, we're going to do what we do. And I think if the Seahawks do that the second time around, offensively, yes, I agree. Sam Darnold will have time to, to throw and he'll be comfortable on the defensive side. I think Leonard Williams, Byron Murphy, DeMarcus Lawrence, those are underrated guys that can get pressure on Purdy.
Jason McIntyre
Yes.
Colin Cowherd
But again, he's very, very elusive. And just. So if you just beat your guy in front of you, that doesn't necessarily mean that you won the down. Kind of gotta play team defense to the whistle. So. No, I, I one seed in play at San Fran. I don't, I think this is a too close to call a game. The NFL got it right. Saturday night prime time should be a great one.
Jason McIntyre
Matt Hasselbeck on a Monday. Wild night last night, wild games. Great seeing you man.
Colin Cowherd
All right, buddy. See you.
Jason McIntyre
I I am a fan of aggressive quarterbacks, but when you speed up aggressive quarterbacks, that's when the turnovers happen. That's what happens with Darnold. It happened with Andrew Luck and and Brock Purdy is not in this league because he plays it second. Safe. Brock Purdy's aggressive. He is really aggressive and sometimes it burns you. Last night, not a lot of pressure. He had the second most time to throw Brock Purdy did last night of his entire career. That is not going to be the case with Seattle. They're going to be on him and that game plan. You can't just sit seven step drop it against Seattle. Doesn't work that way so I can't wait for it. No, no, no, turn on the news. This is the Herdline news.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
All right. Didn't really talk about Derrick Henry much. His monster game Saturday night in Green Bay, Colin, propelled the Ravens into a win and in game, obviously helped by the Browns beating the Steelers. But Sunday Night Football this week, it's Ravens, Steelers, a classic rivalry, AFC north on the line, playoff spot on the line. Derrick Henry, just an otherworldly performance, essentially. You know, Harbaugh remembers, oh, I screwed up last week against the Patriots. I forgot to feed Derek Henry in the fourth. So what does he do? He overcompensates 36 carries. 36. Colin, that's absurd. For 216 yards and four touchdowns. You know, I mean, you could argue that he needed to keep feeding him. I don't know. They were up 14 in the fourth. How's Derek Henry going to perform the week after 36 carries?
Jason McIntyre
Well, I against the Steelers, he doesn't. I mean, the bottom line is these teams know each other. Derek Henry probably shows up at practice and doesn't. He doesn't. You know, I mean, he's basically in recovery all week. He's also like one of those baseball pitchers that gets better from the fifth inning on. Like sometimes Derrick Henry has, you know, I don't know what the historical numbers are, but he had a very slow start to his NFL career first couple years. But he just keeps getting better and better. He's often better late in games where he's got 25 plus carries, so I think he'll be fine for the, for the matchup.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So the latest is Lamar Jackson. They're calling it a shade under 50%. I don't know how you quantify that. 47% chance he plays. Snoop Huntley was fine last week. I don't want to go overboard. I mean, the guy threw for like a buck 50.
Colin Cowherd
Okay.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
J.J. not J.J. watt. T.J. watt, they're saying is a long shot to play this week. That's not great. And DK Metcalf suspended. Things are not looking good for the Steelers. I'm sure you saw Aaron Rodgers only completed eight passes to wide receivers. Tight end Darnell Washington, the big six, seven. Dude. Dude. Broken arm. It looks like his season's over.
Jason McIntyre
Oh, yeah, I. I know this. Just.
Colin Cowherd
Just not.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
We don't have the odds yet.
Jason McIntyre
I don't know what the over under is. Pittsburgh's only way to win, it would seem to me, is 1714.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
Or you make a defensive play. So Pittsburgh's route to win is very limited. Baltimore could win by scoring points. I think Huntley's a pretty darn good backup. I watched them beat the Bears this year. I watch him beat the Packers. I don't know. I trust him. There are certain backups in this league. Huntley's one of them. I trust him. He'll make smart decisions. Go back, go back and look at the Bears game earlier this year. He's composed. He doesn't, he doesn't make big mistakes. He plays within the system. I trust him. In a big spot to beat Pittsburgh on the road.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Mike Tomlin's going to be like a three and a half points thereabouts. Home dog in a very big rah rah spot, which is what he's done amazing with over the years. Down Watt, down Metcalf. Nobody believes in us. You know, he's going to play that card all week. I, I mean, this is going to be a very close game.
Jason McIntyre
Yes.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
What happens if Aaron Rogers fails here?
Levar Arrington
Huh?
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Remember when they beat Baltimore a few weeks ago? Rogers and Metcalf were the big story. I think like the third play of the game, 50 yard bomb to DK. He's not there.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. I'm not going to blame Aaron. I think he's. He's duct taped this offense together all year. The minute DK Metcalf's not available, look at the talent. There is nothing there.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So you're, you're not going to blame Aaron for targeting MVS against Denzel Ward three times with 25 seconds left.
Jason McIntyre
Well, who else can it throw to?
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Scotty Miller, Jalen Warren, Kenneth Gate. Well, I do something. Don't target their best quarterback with mvs. I don't know. I thought Rogers was quite bad. He was clearly ducking Miles Gary. Anyways, let's move on to Raiders, Giants and the Toilet bowl yesterday. This was a terrible game. I was the idiot who took the Raiders. And then hours later, Max Crosby is basically ruled out. And then Max Crosby shows video himself playing basketball at his house as an FU to the Raider. I mean, this franchise is a disaster. And the Giants, you could argue they were in line to get the number one pick last year. Screwed it up. One missed out on Cam Ward. Now they're in the number one pick this year, beat the Raiders. They're not going to get Mendoza. I don't know. Colin, we got the draft order here on the screen for you. My jets climbing back into the mix at three. Raiders will clearly go quarterback.
Jason McIntyre
If I was. If I was the Raiders, I'd get Mendoza. If I was the Giants, there's a couple of. There's a couple of good linebackers.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
There's also a linebacker or two.
Jason McIntyre
Stop it.
Public Investing Ad
Come on.
Jason McIntyre
You just go get the best player. The Jets. I'd go.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Dante Moore. If he's there.
Jason McIntyre
Usually, yeah. If he's there.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Would you say they're useless?
Jason McIntyre
Tennessee's got multiple needs. Arizona's a mess.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Arizona is going to have a new coach. That's.
Jason McIntyre
Is Cleveland going to stay with Shador Sanders?
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
I mean, he's going to get a look, but there isn't a quarterback you'd take because the jets will take whoever is the next.
Levar Arrington
Next best.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
I would not be surprised if the Browns kept Stefanski and went after Malik Willis. He's going to be the best free agent quarterback, right?
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, but you're. You're paying Deshaun Watson still. You got to get. You got to go hit a quarterback in the draft. That's the thing about Shador. You can have a decent roster with Shador because you're not paying him anything.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
By the way, did you see the Shador interception yesterday?
Jason McIntyre
I. I was bad. It was bad. He just shucks it.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Literally. Remember that game? 500. Throw the ball high in the air and call out a number. I was like, that's like a throw in the backyard. It was atrocious.
Jason McIntyre
He's got to get. Shador's. Got to get out of the running backwards thing.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
Which by the way, mostly Caleb Williams has done a great job on that. But I'll tell you. I'll tell you a story that nobody talks about.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Here we go.
Jason McIntyre
Tyler Shock.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Oh, yeah. I can't wait for this. We're not doing it now, but go ahead, go ahead.
Jason McIntyre
Looks like the Saints don't need a quarterback. Oh, okay.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
I gotta just stay. Stay calm because I keep getting these people on social media. Oh, you don't believe in Chuck? He's our franchise quarterback. I mean, we're crowning guys way too early. By the way, Jackson Dart.
Jason McIntyre
Where are we?
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Franchise quarterback.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Oh, dear. Okay, final story con. Let's go to. Oh, my goodness. We've forgotten all about your boy Baker Mayfield in Tampa. They are cratering. Lost seven of eight, including a fourth straight. This was an easy dub. Dolphins beat him. I mean, I don't know what the hell happened to the Bucks. Colin. The offense stinks all of a sudden. The defense can't stop anybody. Baker Mayfield, two picks and a fumble. He was quite bad. Here's Baker on week 18 where they can save the season and get in the playoffs.
Jason McIntyre
Offensively, it comes back to execution. You know, we obviously gave ourselves a fighting chance right there, but yeah, didn't. Didn't do enough.
Colin Cowherd
And yeah, those, those turnovers over has obviously crushed us.
Jason McIntyre
So gotta come back.
Colin Cowherd
And here's the thing.
Jason McIntyre
We're still have a chance next week. We've been blessed with a chance next week and guys need to handle it the right way.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So, Colin, real quick, did you see in the video one sleeve off his throwing arm, the other had some sort of rap. I don't know, something was going on there. I'm just telling you he's hurt because remember, he's a tough guy. He doesn't like to admit it. And that's what took him down in Cleveland. See the video there? There's something going on with. I don't know if he's just. It's ice or treatment, but something's wrong with Baker Mayfield. He has been so bad for two months now.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I mean, yeah, it's not been good. It's not.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Early in the season, he was on fire. This happened in Cleveland.
Jason McIntyre
Well, they got to the playoffs. Buck fans were like, well, our offensive line again, The Chargers are 11 and 5 with a worse offensive line. Everybody's O lines banged out. It's the toughest position to play in the league.
Levar Arrington
League.
Jason McIntyre
So it's not just that it's had a rough season. They have to. They have a good gm. They got to hit in some draft picks. You know, they're Going to have big conversations on what to do at coach too. I don't know what they're going to do. I mean there are. They played very well early in the season. Listen, the NFL average is seven new coaches a year. So you know, you start looking at the Raiders and Pete Carroll, you could see that getting flushed out the jets and Aaron Glenn, you could see that getting flushed out. Like the, the Raiders don't do anything. Well, Chip Kelly didn't get along with people on the staff. Like you could see that thing going sideways fast and for Pete Carroll and in Vegas.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So Colin, I forget who posted this online yesterday. Are you ready for this number? Heading into yesterday's Bucks Dolphins matchup. Todd bowles record in Tampa 34. 32.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
Mike McDaniels and Mike 34 and 32. So now Mike McDaniel has a better record than Bowles, yet everybody just wants to run off McDaniel all the narratives about the Dolphins and their softness. Well, Todd Bowles same record. And he's got a franchise guy in Baker Mayfield, you claim?
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I mean it's, it's.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
It'S what.
Jason McIntyre
Mike made TUA a pro.
Public Investing Ad
Boulder.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. Yeah. You know, like, like. And Mike's an offensive coach. I, I tend to with offensive like Pete Carroll's an old defensive coach. If you blew him out, I'd get it. Aaron Glenn is a middle aged defensive coach not working. I could move on. I supported Matt Nagy in Chicago when nobody would. And my take is he's on. He got Trubisky to the playoffs. He's on the right side of the ball. Matt Eber flu is in Chicago. I was like get rid of him. Yeah. So like Mike McDonald's. Daniel probably loses his job, but he's on the right side. He made two a Pro Bowler. Go look around. Go watch the game last night. Bears and Niners. Ben Johnson, Kyle Shanahan. You think you're going to get that game with two defensive head coaches like you're seeing this. These offensive brilliant offensive coaches, they're different. They're just different.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So just Bulls. Is he in jeopardy if you think it did.
Jason McIntyre
I don't know. I don't know if he should be. I'd have to go exactly. Examine all of it. I didn't. I am not paying attention. I, I have always thought he was pretty capable. I think he's a really smart defensive guy. I'd have to look at everything now.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
He did lose canales.
Jason McIntyre
Yes.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
His O.C. and then Liam Cohen is O.C.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah. That's the downside of being a defensive coach, if you do get a great oc, a year or two later, they leave and then you have to reinvent yourself. And how many great ocs can you hire in succession? He nailed two to two. So you could say with Todd Bowles to defend him, okay, he got two right. And they were a playoff team. He missed on this one. Do you give him another chance with another OC and let Baker Mayfield have a say in the selection? I think you could make an argument if you were the agent or defender of Todd Bowles.
J. Mac (Diana Rossini)
So spot on by you. That's a great point. And I want everybody to listen when these NFL insiders come on and they start talking about head coaching candidates. Colin, all they mention is defensive coaches. That's it. It Jesse Minter, Brian Flores, just listen closely. That's all agents pushing their guy to get a head coaching job because everybody knows what your path, the right path is your path. Hire an offensive guy.
Jason McIntyre
We've been on this for like 5 years. Go look at the end of the season, your final six and eight coaches, it's final four, your Super Bowls. J. Mac of the news.
Public Investing Ad
Well, that's the news and thanks for stopping by the Herd line.
Jason McIntyre
News am I taking is I'm not into fire the coach. But when you get into certain situations like they can't get their personal life in order. We saw that at Michigan. Like that's just one of those where there's egregious personal mistakes. Nobody's perfect. People make mistakes. But there are certain times that gets in the way. The other thing I've always said about coaches, I've said this for 20 years. Even if you've got a losing record, are you taking care of your side of the. A lot of you guys bang on Lincoln Riley. And my take is USC's offense is amazing. You don't have to like it's recruiting all the time. But the offense, he's an offensive coach. So when, when Demico Ryan, I think was was was it last year was struggling. People were banging on D. Ryan and I'm like, the Texans defense is unbelievable. I'm good with that. I'm, I'm. If you can get your side right, I know you know football. That's why with the jets you're like, they don't have an interception this year year. And you're a defensive guy. That would worry me. Or Nathaniel Hackett was an offensive guy in Denver and he couldn't do the clock. Remember the first game he goes back to Seattle with Russell Wilson and they butcher the clock. I'm like, you're an offensive guy. You got to be able to figure that out In Chicago. It's the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific.

Tonight on FS1, it's a college hoops tripleheader starting with number nine Michigan State hosting Cornell. Then it's Big Ten women's hoops as Silo Swords and sixth ranked Michigan take on Katie Fiso in Oregon. Then out west, it's Utah versus Washington. It all tips off at 7pm Eastern only on FS1.
Jason McIntyre
All right, I one of the things sometimes a parent will come up to me if I have to speak to a college class or a high school class. What's. What's the best advice you could give to my son or daughter? And my best advice is there's no one piece of advice. Everybody on the Internet's got all the advice. I have opinions, advice. There's no one way in life. Don't get your head down. Keep working early. Failure doesn't mean anything. You're in your 20s. There is no one piece of advice for any career. Go look at the NFC west quarterbacks. This year, three different teams. LA has a former number one Pick old Matt Stafford, they're crushing. San Francisco has the last pick, undersized, albeit talented, Brock Purdy. And Seattle's got a reclamation project in Sam Darnold, who by the way, if you look at the numbers the last several years, he's number one in wins, number two in big plays, number three in passing touchdowns. Yesterday seven of eight on third down, he was outstanding. The bottom line is there's no, no one piece of advice. There's a million different ways to be successful, especially at quarterback in the NFL. Maybe Malik Willis is your answer. I mean the world gave up on Sam Darnold. Now he's had back to back 13 win seasons. You know who else has done that? Brady Favre, Manning, Rogers and Sam Darnold. There is no one way. There's no linear path for an actor, a singer, a quarterback, great athletes. And yesterday Sam was great on third down, even within a game. Sam yesterday excellent on third down. That was his thing. Here's his coach. I know it wasn't Sam's like best game of all time and the stats reflect that. But like there's some big time third down throws with pressure in his face. You know we threw the jet one to Jax, you know that route to Cooper. Those are some big time throws that you know in the face of pressure that we need to be able to make and they're not easy to make. Okay, I want to talk to our Sanders. Because we talked earlier about the Browns beating the Steelers, we concentrated on the Steelers. What would I do if I ran the Steelers? I love their GM Andrew Barry, I love their coach Kevin Stefan. I'm going to throw this out. You still have that desean Watson cap hit. I would stay with Shador Sanders. If Dante Moore does not come out, I would stay with Shador Sanders. You're not going to be a top 10 team. He needs an entire off season being coached by Stefanski as the number one quarterback this year. He went into camp as a scout team guy. I would stay with Shadow. Do I think Shedeur is ever going to have great traits? No, he's not that big. He doesn't have a great arm. He's athletic. Not that athletic. But you know what, he's a big play guy. He has some really awful picks. So what? Purdy, Stafford, Darnold, Andrew Luck. I'm not crushing you for that. They don't have a very good offensive line. They need to. This is not a great quarterback class in Cleveland. Cleveland needs some draft capital. Right? Rebuild your O line. Shador Sanders, a fifth round Pick is inexpensive. Do I think he's great? No. But next year if Dante Moore doesn't come out, you start looking at the 2027 quarterback draft class. Pretty tasty, pretty interesting guys that are could come out this year like a Ty Simpson or a Dante Moore. If they stand, they get another 13, 14 starts. So about every third year you get one of these first round quarterback classes with like four or five guys who can play. This year is not one of them. So why reach on a quarterback? If you're Cleveland, go, there's three great offensive tackles in this class. Go get one of them. Two from Utah. Go get an offensive tackle to support Shador Sanders, your second, third, fourth pick. Rebuild the offensive line line. Go get another wide receiver. Give Shador Sanders a chance. This offense right now, you don't really give him a chance. He doesn't need. I mean what quarterback has a chance? You're just not good enough. So again, I don't need you to be Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes. If it's I need a quarterback, I've got a ridiculous, I mean Sean Payton got lucky, he needed a quarterback. And Bo Nicks, Drake May, Pennix McCarthy, Caleb Jaden Daniels. The year that he needed a quarterback, it was a great quarterback class in Denver, he got lucky. You know the year the Patriots needed a quarterback, they got lucky. They were a bad team, lottery pick level and Drake May was there. But some years like Cleveland, they're not going to get Mendoza. So just give Shador the reins, build the offense around him, him attack the wide receiver position. Give Shador a fighting chance next year and let's say he wins seven games and goes seven and 10. You're probably drafting nine in a draft with four to five quarterbacks and you can get one without having to give up draft capital. But I, this idea, everybody's like, well is he good? Is he not? There's a lot of analytics that say Shador isn't very good. There's also analytics that say Jackson Dart's not great. But the Giants are going to give, now that they're the number two pick, they're going to give Jackson Dart another year. They're going to give him stuff to work with. So I, I don't, I, I think there's a real argument that, I mean just look at how much these young quarterbacks improve year to year. Look at Drake May last year to this year. He's a top 34 quarterback in the league this year. Last year he had moments where he looked really good. He didn't even have a lot of great games. He had a lot of great moments. So I think I'd stick with Shador. And if and if I was Kevin Stefanski, I would go to the owner and say, you, you're, we're in this mess because of you. You're the one that guaranteed the DeSean Watson deal. So let me do it my way. Do I think you're going to be a playoff team with Shadower?
Colin Cowherd
No.
Jason McIntyre
But give the kid a shot. I mean he's, he's, I, I, I still contend with a good infrastructure. I mean, yesterday he beats Aaron Rodgers. Aaron had, I mean that Pittsburgh roster, that Pittsburgh roster is better than that Cleveland roster. And Shoulder had a really bad pick. He also had a couple of nice throws. So there you go. All right. Diana Rossini shows up in our last hour. Now football starts getting real serious. San Francisco in Seattle next Saturday. That is one for the 80s.
