Lavar Arrington
Now let's get this party started.
Jonas Knox
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. It's a heard FOX Sports Radio LaVar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for calling. We will be taking you all the way up until 3pm Eastern time, noon Pacific. You can hear Lavar and I and Brady Quinn on two pros and a cup of Joe throughout the course of the week, Monday through Friday 6:00am Eastern Time. You know a little grab ass to get your morning started in the world of sports and beyond. So we'll be there tomorrow morning as well too. But we are talking about college football. We're talking about the NFL. We've got the Peach bowl, which is kicking off here in just a few moments from now between Arizona State and between the Arizona State Sun Devils and the Texas Longhorns there our guy Pete Prisco, who joins us throughout the course of the week. He's already sent out a tweet. He is there. He actually made it out for that game, proud Arizona State alum. So we will keep you posted on that throughout the course of the show. Maybe the Sun Devils will keep it close there and make that a game with Cam Scatterboo, who's a beast, but it feels like he's going to have much a similar task that Ashton Genty had last night to where he's got to, you know, try and potentially carry that team. They want to have any success against Texas. So again, we'll keep you updated on that throughout the course of the show. The other running back in the news is Saquon Barkley. And Saquon Barkley has got an opportunity. He's 101 yards shy of breaking the all time single season rushing record. And so the big discussion is, well, Philly's got nothing to play for. They're taking on his former team, the awful Giants this week. And if Phillies got nothing to play for, why would you risk throwing Saquon Barkley out there to get injured? You'd rather have him for the postseason even though he's got an opportunity to chase history. Nick Sirianni, the head coach of the Eagles, spoke about his decision and thought process going into the decision yesterday.
Nick Sirianni
I'll talk to our staff, I'll talk to the players, I'll talk to Howie, you know, I'll talk to Mr. Laurie, I'll talk to everybody and to try to make sure I'm making the best decision for the football team. And that's your job as a head coach. You know, I'm going to always do what's best for the team and the individuals going for, going for that. And I'm still thinking through a little bit of this too, but something I haven't told the guys yet. So I'll always let them know before I let anybody else take into a lot to account. Again, it's, it's what's the best thing for the team and then also what's the best for the individuals that are going for the record. You know, if you think back a couple years ago to 20, 21, Smitty was going for the rookie receiving record I think he was going to break DeSean Jackson's rookie receiving record. And everybody else was resting, but we wanted, for everyone else, whatever it was, we didn't, we didn't play some other guys in that game. We went and got him that record. Every situation is a little different. Not saying one way or the other how that's going to play out or even that I've made a decision yet. But again, I got to tell the guys when I, when I do come to that decision, and I'll let you guys know, but a lot goes into it.
Jonas Knox
All right, so, La Bar, you have a gift, all right? Now you just hear, you're able to hear what a coach is saying, but really translate what he's saying or get a feeling for what way they're siding with as far as a decision goes and then making a decision. So you hear Nick Sirianni on WIP in Philly yesterday, talk like that. How do you think this thing goes?
Lavar Arrington
Well, I think there's two ways I interpreted it. Two ways, Jonas. I think the first one that I took from it is because you don't. What do you need to talk to all those people about? Like, if the, if the man wants to go out there and play and you know, what he's going out there to play for, what's all the. Goes into it and all this and that and the other. So there, there's that. So I kind of took it as he's talking to all of them because he's going to play them and he don't want to lose his ass. If, you know, if Saquon, something were to happen to Saquon in that game or two, you know, or option number two, the way I took it was I'm not playing them and I don't care if, you know, or I shouldn't say I don't care. I want to be clear that we're on the same page that, I mean, how important is this record? Because here's the thing, we're looking at this as an individual record, but you got to keep in mind that goes down in the record book for the Eagles too, you know, and that adds to the history for the Eagles. The Eagles will now be able to boast having the single season leader and rushing yards. Right. So there is more to it than just the individual. Yeah, so. So I think that those are the two ways of looking at it is I don't want to get in trouble. If I put him in there and he gets hurt. Like, it's like, sign me off. Sign off on that.
Jonas Knox
So going into hearing those comments and following those comments, my thought was I leaned towards he was going to play, but I looked at it and said I wouldn't do it. But it felt like that's maybe where he was leaning. Nick Sirianni just spoke with reporters in Philly a couple of moments ago and they have made the decision to rest Saquon, Barkley and other starters. And this is my thought on it.
Lavar Arrington
That is crazy. Well, I, that's crazy.
Jonas Knox
I think the only way. So the quote from Nick Sirianni is this. It's a very special record that's been standing for a very long time by a great player. But you try to do what's best for the team. When the buy was, how guys are feeling. When the buy was gone, how guys are feeling, our goals are to have success and play good the next game we play. So that's the quote from Nick.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, that's a, that's a bunch of crap like that to me. I don't buy that at all. That like that man ran for the amount of yards that he's ran for and to be in position to take down one of the greatest running backs of all time who did one of the greatest feats of all time and putting that record in place where it has not been, it has not been broken. It has not been broken. And this man is a hundred yards away from doing it and it's to rest him for the playoffs. Yeah, I, I, I don't, I, I mean, you play the game. You play the game.
Jonas Knox
You know what? I, so aren't they going.
Lavar Arrington
Let me ask you this, let me ask you this. This is last game of the year.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
Does, does Philly get a bye week? No, they got to play right away.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
And that's, they're not going to be at one seed.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. And that's, and that's why I, going into it, I thought, look, if they would have had a bye week, I could understand them playing him. And we're getting next week to rest anyways, let's do it. But my thought, if I was, you know, before hearing Nick Sirianni's comments from yesterday, I started to lean towards man, I think they're going to end up playing him. When you hear his comments today, after they make the official announcement that they're not going to play Saquon, Barkley and chase the record and they're going to rest starters, I got a feeling they wouldn't have done this unless Saquon wasn't.
Lavar Arrington
Okay, yeah, I'm with you on that because I can, I can, I can, I can buy that.
Jonas Knox
Because there was a point. So he was miked up.
Lavar Arrington
But why put him. But he said the record didn't matter to him.
Jonas Knox
Listen, earlier this year, there was a point where he was on the sideline and there was an opportunity for him to break a record of some sorts, to go back into the game. And they asked, hey, what do you want to do? It's up to you. It's your call. And Saquon Barkley, because he's such a great guy and you know this, obviously, him being Penn State alum, he made the call that, listen, let other guys get some burn time. I don't, I don't need to go back in. So I don't think that they make this call unless he gives them his blessing. And the.
Lavar Arrington
I just don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like it. I don't like for him to have to be put in a position where that's just like him being a good guy can ultimately, sometimes that can work against you. And that might sound selfish and that might sound like, you know, you know, I, I don't know what it sounds like, but I don't like it. You're that close to it. You're a professional. It's the game, it's the season. And you work towards things like you, you work towards greatness, you work towards immortality because you know, the moment you're not playing that game anymore, you start to see and feel your, your mortality. You're not an immortal anymore. And now you, you start down a different road in your life when you have the opportunity and the ability to be able to do things like break record, greatest of the greats. So you're telling me they would, look, they would rest LeBron James if LeBron James had the opportunity to break a record from Michael Jordan or, or any of the other greats, you know, when he broke Kareem Abdul Jabbar's record, stuff like that. You're going to rest him like that. To me, that's a overstated. That, That's a overstated cop out, if you ask me. Like resting. You're in season, aren't you preparing for a season. When you're preparing for the season, you're not preparing for every game that you're going to play and possibly play in the playoffs. All right, he's not, I mean, he's not crazy old. I know he's had injuries and, and I'M sure you take that into consideration. It just, it. He'll, he probably will never come this close to that record again. He'll probably never come that close to this record again. And is, oh, he's a nice guy, so go ahead and rest him because he's not going to care. Or that, that record, well, maybe it'll matter to his kids, maybe it'll matter to his grandkids. You know how much that record matters to Eric Dickerson. He don't want nobody to break that record. Just ask and he'll let you know. That is a, that is a serious feat. And people say, oh, well, he played more games. Well, you know the record that, that he broke. O.J. simpson played less games too. So I don't care about the whole idea that, well, Saquon is doing it in more games than what Eric Dickerson did. I don't care.
Jonas Knox
You didn't like when I, that was my excuse a couple.
Lavar Arrington
It doesn't matter. I don't care. He broke somebody's record that didn't play as many games as Eric Dickerson did. But you know what? Eric Dickerson went and broke that record. I can't remember a whole lot of things about Eric Dickerson's career by detail. Right? When you think about people that have played the game, you can't remember a lot of things that they've done by detail. You know what, you can remember records. You can remember records. There are certain things you can remember, man, but you don't remember everything. You get an opportunity to etch your name in the record books as such the highest level of competition and you're, you're saying, oh well, we're going to arrest them for the playoffs. I, I don't, I don't buy that. That's not a decision I would have made. If I'm like, let's get this man that record. Like when, when I'm the coach. Let's get him, let's get him that record. And if I'm the O line, I'm sitting there and I'm, I got snot bubbles and I got saliva coming out of my mouth. Okay, let's get it. I'm foaming at the mouth. Let's get him that record. Because you know what? That's the offensive lines record just as much as it is Saquon's record.
Jonas Knox
That, here's what's, here's what's weird about just. And this is why I think that Saquon was obviously heavily involved in this and he was a decision Maker, if Jeffrey Lori and Howie Roseman and all these guys in Philadelphia, the front office said, no, no, no, we don't want him playing. And yet all these teammates being like Saquon, it's not worth it. And then they go to Saquon Barkley afterwards. Hey, your thoughts? We don't think it's a good idea. No. I want to play. Like, Nick Sirianni is not going to go against everybody in the organization and let Saquon play. And he's not going to divide and create this when there's already been stories about a divide that's there between Sirianni and other coaches and Sirianni and Hertz and A.J. brown. Like, to me, this is pretty cut and dry. They went to Saquon Barkley and said, what do you think? If he would have put up any fight whatsoever, I don't think they would have gone against him. I just. I feel like he was heavily involved in the call.
Lavar Arrington
I don't think.
Jonas Knox
I think he's earned it.
Lavar Arrington
I don't think you do it. I think you say, we're going to get it. Like, if I'm Nick Sirianni, we're going to get this record. You're playing against your former team. They discarded you, threw you in the trash of sorts. You're not worth it. And they did that. S on Hard Knocks. Everybody in the world saw it. You get to go break that record you get to go break that record against the former team that didn't want you in the same conference, same, same division. I don't like it. I say, let's go get it. Let's go get it. And then you take that type of momentum. You got, you got an early gift in your season, you're going for the super bowl, but you got an early gift in your season. You're not getting the number one seed. So if you're not getting the number one seed, get this momentum. Let's. Let's carry that momentum into the. Into the playoffs. Our offensive line are some dogs, so let's go out here and be dogs again and carry this into the playoffs. And, oh, by the way, we're going to make history. Every last one of us, we're going to make history. You know what? I didn't get 200 sacks in my, in my career. But you know who did? Bruce Smith. You know who was right there in the picture? Go look at the picture. Go look at the picture. I'mma be right there in the picture. I'm going to be right there. That wasn't just Bruce Smith's record. That was not just Bruce Smith's. That was not just his record. I was right there with him.
Jonas Knox
He ran and you're like, guys, we did it.
Lavar Arrington
We did it, friend. You got that, man. I was all. I was grabbing him and hugging him. I knew that camera was out and I knew I was a part. I might have only been a part. Hey, hey, Jonas. I might have only been a part of 20 of them. 200. But you know what? I was a part of the last 20. I was a part of the last 20B. And I'mma have my moment.
Jonas Knox
Damn.
Lavar Arrington
We broke that record. I tell Bruce that every time I see Bruce. Like, hey, man, we give each other a big hug. We broke that record. Did we, Bruce? Pray, pray, Pray for what?
Jonas Knox
Oh, I used to tell some of.
Lavar Arrington
This madness going on when Brady and.
Jonas Knox
I were doing the Sunday night show together. So I said, brady, between you and I, we threw 95 touchdowns in college. You know, like, I used to claim that all the time. Like, I'm a part of that. That's part of this.
Lavar Arrington
Well, you do radio with them.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. It counts as mine.
Lavar Arrington
I mean, I get it. There you go.
Jonas Knox
You guys are first round draft picks. Me too. No, you're not. My ass. Check the show.
Lavar Arrington
You're part of this.
Jonas Knox
Yes, I am. Yeah. So again, that's the. That's the latest. It felt like Nick Sirianni speaking yesterday was going to to make the call to let Saquon play. But as it turns out, he spoke with reporters a short time ago. And no Saquon Barkley or other starters in the final against the Giants coming up this weekend. So the record is safe. I also wonder this. If Saquon had broken the record in 17 games, would Eric Dickerson, much like Mark Astino, have accosted him at a. At an autograph signing years later for a faulty record? If. That was amazing.
Lavar Arrington
Come on now. No, man. Come on. Which is funny. That's a funny. Because he really did. He really did want to get at Brett Favre for that, man. And I mean, and you know what? Them records be mattering, man? That would be, you know, records matter.
Jonas Knox
You know, would be the ultimate move by the Giants if, say, Saquon Barkley was, you know, 20 yards shy of the record.
Lavar Arrington
Just let him get it.
Jonas Knox
Oh, man. Because then he would feel guilty about getting it because he'd be like, oh, this is not right. But the. The Giants could be like, you know what? Michael Strahan got a gift from Brett Favre years ago, we're going to go ahead and give you a gift. And then it would put it. Put a stain on the record completely. And then everybody would be like, what was the point? You know, like, that's still.
Lavar Arrington
To me, that's where it gets confusing, you know, Not. Not. Not any other way. I mean, Brett Favre took a fall. He took a dive. I mean, everybody's seen it. He took a dive. That might have been the worst way to break a record I've ever seen in my entire life. But you know what? It happened.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
And, you know, that's a record. It's a record. Mark Gas knew wanted to tear Brett Favre's head off his neck. And you know what? And maybe rightfully so, why does he know what he did?
Jonas Knox
Why does he go after tj? What? Tie the record? I mean, come on, man.
Lavar Arrington
All I'mma say. All I'm g. Say is. All I'mma say is that was a dab. But here's the thing. If you're resting starters and you're saying I'm resting starters because this is what we're doing. I mean, I. I get it. I just feel like, why wouldn't you play them long enough to get to the hundred? Do you got to play four quarters to get to the hundred?
Jonas Knox
I mean, by.
Lavar Arrington
By maybe. Maybe re. Maybe reassess it. Re. Evaluate it at. At halftime. Like, where is he at? He might have ripped off a 50 yarder or 40 yard or 60 yarder. You never know. I just think it's crazy to be that close to history and not go get it.
Jonas Knox
If that was Dan Campbell, he would have had Saquon on special teams, too. Like, oh, listen. Oh, you're going for the record. You're gonna hurt it, buddy. Hey, hey. You're on kickoff. Have fun out there. Yeah. So listen, disappointing, but I'm disappointed.
Lavar Arrington
But, you know, but hey, so is what it is. The Saquon fan.
Jonas Knox
There's the little bit of breaking news here on the Herd with Lavar Arrington and Jonas Knox. Nick Sirianni makes the announcement. It's official. No Saquon Barkley in the final game of the season, trying to break the all time rushing record. It is the Herd here on fsr. Again, Lavar Jonas in for calling here coming up next on Fox Sports Radio. Though, apparently we've got a little bit more insight as to what the future looks like for one of the all time greats at quarterback. That's yours right here on fsr. It's the Herd, Fox Sports Radio, levar Arrington, Jonas Knox in for calling. We are going to get to this latest story involving a team in the NFL that's got a lot of stories that have come out this year, but we may now have at least a little bit of an indication as to whether or not they're going to go in one direction as far as parting ways with this player after the season. So we'll have that for you coming up here in just a couple of moments from now, an update on the big story that is currently going on, which was the tragedy in New Orleans. There was a suspect who drove a truck into the crowd there. Obviously, people there in New Orleans celebrating New Year's Eve. Also getting ready for the Sugar bowl, which will be taking place there later on tonight. And reportedly there is some thought that, and there's a report out there from WDSU in New Orleans that they may be postponing the Sugar Bowl 24 hours. So we may not actually get the Sugar bowl later on tonight. It may be tomorrow. Again, we're waiting on a second confirmation of that, but that is at least what the initial report from WDSU is saying, that they are investigating it as a terrorist attack and before, you know, they feel comfortable playing the game. They want to make sure everybody is safe and all parties involved are not in any danger. And so the thought is they may be moving it to tomorrow, LA Bar. So that's at least the initial report.
Lavar Arrington
Safety first, SAF 51st, you know, and to all the people that were impacted by, affected, you know, by what took place, thoughts and prayers, obviously, and positive thoughts to them and everyone involved. It's unfortunate that there's such evil that exists in our world, but nonetheless, it does exist and proper protocols and proper precautionary actions. I agree with that. I think that that makes sense here. I think that that's right. And you want to make sure that again, whoever was impacted, do we have like the, you know, do we have any more information on like the level of injuries that took place?
Jonas Knox
Dozens injured. I've seen 10 deaths. I've also seen 12 out there as well, too. Yeah, it's, it's bad.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, that's, that's just, that's, yeah, that's, that's, that's, that's, that's horrific. Where you don't, you know, how do you celebrate a game? You know, how can you properly celebrate a game?
Jonas Knox
It's so quick afterwards, man. So quick.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, Right. Right. So I, I think they got it right. I think it makes sense to postpone it for now, you know, even if it's just for, you know, the day to make sure that, like I said, protocols wise, everything is handled the way that it's handled and done the way it needs to be done. I think that that's the right, the right move. And, and you know what, like these, these teams are going to have to, you know, figure out how to, you know, kind of pot down a little bit, but be able to ramp back up to get going for the game when the game, you know, is. Is played. So, you know, things happen. You got to be able to, to adapt and adjust to the, the moving variables sometimes, and sometimes it's out of our, our control as to why you have to be able to adapt and adjust. And in this case, it's so sad and, and upsetting to, to hear something like this take place. Why would, why would you do it? Like, I just don't. What are you thinking about? What did you. What are you. What are you trying to prove? What are you feeling after you did it? Like, really, was it. Is it that bad? Is whatever going on that bad? Where you have to impact other people's lives that way? It's just. I don't, I don't understand it. But you know what? Thoughts and prayers, like I said to the families.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. And again, if we get confirmation, it does appear like that's where it's heading, that the Sugar bowl will be postponed 24 hours. If we get another confirmation on that, we'll have that for you throughout the course of the show. It is the Herd here on Fox Sports Radio. Elsewhere in college football, Texas is up 7 to 3 in the Peach bowl over Arizona State. So the Longhorns have just scored eight minutes and change left to go in the opening quarter there. We'll have updates on that throughout the course of the show. Also in about 15 minutes from now, a little over 15 minutes from now, apparently an NFL team is making a decision that's going to piss off their fan base. Apparently that'll be yours here a little over 15 minutes from now. So we do have another update on your favorite team, the New York Jets. LaVar and Aaron Rodgers.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, wow, that's wonderful.
Jonas Knox
Courtesy of stadium. Sources say that barring an unforeseen change, the jets are expected to move on from both Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Devonte Adams this off season. Source tells us the relationship. Hold on.
Lavar Arrington
I'm sorry, I'm. Track. Go ahead.
Jonas Knox
Hold on.
Lavar Arrington
Go ahead.
Jonas Knox
Damn.
Lavar Arrington
Thanks.
Jonas Knox
Source tells us that the relationship between Woody Johnson, the owner and Rogers is irreparable. That of course, on the heels of Woody Johnson throwing out there, that, you know, maybe they should have benched Rogers earlier in the season. And Rogers, you know, although I will say that he was. He has been pretty patient as far as discussing Woody Johnson, but did sort of call out, you know, I think there needs to be, you know, some patience from ownership as well in the NFL, just in general, which everyone perceived as him taking a shot at Woody Johnson. Now, as somebody who was featured in Episode 3 of Enigma, starring Aaron Rodgers on Netflix, I support Aaron Rodgers and whatever his decision is. I hope he gets touchdown 500 this weekend. And I hope he leaves the New York jets and realizes, you know what, it wasn't all that bad in Green Bay, you know, really wasn't all that bad. And him and Devonte Adams end up somewhere. I'll say this. Devonte Adams is still playing at a high level. Like he's. There's been some miscommunications with Rogers on the field that you've seen, but when he's playing, like against Jacksonville a couple of weeks ago, he lit them up. So I don't have any thoughts about devonte Adams future. I think there's going to be a place for him in the NFL. I'm just wondering what the hell happens with Rogers after this year, because it felt like this was where it was heading, that he was. Wasn't going to be back in New York.
Lavar Arrington
Probably call it. I. I don't know. You probably call it a day. I don't know. I don't know. You know, this is what I do know, is that whatever it is that he did, he needs to make amends for it and in. In Green Bay so he could go back home and be celebrated at the end of the day, right? Because it's, It's. It's a wrap. Like, wherever he goes. I don't even know how much it, like, how much does that. How much does he have left in him to be able to impact his. His career? You know, I mean, maybe he can go. Is there a team out there that he could actually go to that would be good enough for him to kind of, you know, redeem himself within his career? You know, I would say no, I don't think that that exists. I don't think that team is out there. I don't think that team exists.
Jonas Knox
Wasn't that supposed to be what the jets were?
Lavar Arrington
That was what the jets were Supposed to be. Yeah, that was what they were supposed to be. So. And that is not what they ended up being. And. And you know what? I don't know. I don't know that you get the opportunity with the reputation that you have, which is kind of sad, right, because you think about it. I mean, he has been a brilliant football player throughout his career, but you got to think about the idea that, you know, a lot of the drama that played out in Green Bay was associated and attached purely to Aaron Rodgers. So now you see it taking place in a whole nother environment. Why would you bring. Why would you take a risk on bringing him into your organization knowing that everywhere he's been, he's generated this constant media attention that's driven by drama? I just don't see that being a good decision for an organization to make on an. At a player that's at the. The juncture in his career that Aaron Rodgers is in. So if you're asking me what's next, he might not be. He might not be touchable.
Jonas Knox
I think he walks. I think if he gets the 500th touchdown and it's to Devonte Adams, I think he looks at that as, you know what? I wanted to try and win another Super Bowl. It didn't happen. The injury came up. The season hasn't gone how we thought it was going to go, but I got to finish my career playing with my best friend, and I got to throw my 500th touchdown pass to my best friend. I'm good. Good. And I think he walks away. I don't think he plays again.
Lavar Arrington
I gotta be honest with you, though. I think Devonte Adams is impacted by this as well because of the way things played out in Las Vegas. Like you drama your way up out of there.
Jonas Knox
But you don't think that he had a little bit of an argument there because what, he signed up.
Lavar Arrington
No quarterback. Yeah, I get it.
Jonas Knox
He signed up for. I want. I'm going to play with Derek Carr, who's another good friend of his. And I felt like I, you know, we were. We had this plan in place, and then all of a sudden, car gets benched before the season's even over, they bring in Josh McDaniel. That's a disaster. All that played out like it. It feels like what devonte Adams went to Vegas for. They didn't provide on their end, and that's why he looked at it.
Lavar Arrington
I will say he was let down in that way. I. I will agree with that. But while I will agree with that, he now still Becomes like a de facto, basically like a journeyman, like overnight, if you think about it. I mean, he'll be going to his, his third team. Yeah, right. Well, I mean, this will be his fourth team. This will be his fourth team, third team after leaving, leaving the Packers. I mean, I just, I don't, I don't think that that bodes well. I mean, you know, different, different positions have different reputation kind of implications connected to him, and maybe he goes somewhere else and he's able to, to have the type of season that he's been, you know, that he's been trying to have. But I don't think that, I don't think that this boat. Well, it bodes well or plays out well for him either. I mean, it's possible that it could work against him, if you ask me. So, you know, I don't know. But I don't find that just as like I didn't find the first breaking news piece of news on Kyle Shanahan and, and, and John lynch to be a surprise. This one. One also is not of a surprise to me that it's going to happen because I'm thinking, just so we're clear.
Jonas Knox
Because I, I just look at like, well, like, what are the options? You know, like, if you like, the only option would be. And Rogers has been open to this. Like, look, I, I'm, I'm totally okay with being a mentor in a mentor role to a younger quarterback that gets drafted. That's why when he has said, like, I love New York, I just built a place out here. I love Manhattan, all that, man, man, the Giants isn't the worst idea in the world if they draft a quarterback and they feel like, look, let's have a veteran here and somebody that we. You wouldn't bring in Rogers to be the mentor to the. Really. He's not going to have the guy.
Lavar Arrington
You do not know what you're going to get, all right? Do not know what type of confusion that is going to be generated because there's going to be an agenda connected to Aaron Rodgers wherever it is. He's, he's at.
Jonas Knox
Let me.
Lavar Arrington
That's not necessarily, I'm not going to put that necessarily all on him. I think that the media plays a lot into that as well.
Jonas Knox
Do you. Are you worried? And I want you to just be honest here, okay? Just be honest. Are you worried that, let's say, for example, total hypothetical Cam Ward is the quarterback with the Giants, they draft him, he ends up being the guy there? Are you worried that if Aaron Rodgers is his mentor with the Giants that Cam Ward is going to be found riding on top of a camel in a desert somewhere smoking weed out of a ukulele or something like that?
Lavar Arrington
Is that what you're worried about? I'm going to say, I'm going to say yes for the sake of laughing at it. Like, yes, that will, that will concern me. That, that, that becomes something he wants to do and prioritize with his time. No, seriously, I don't, I don't. First off, I don't think these, these, you would have to find the right quarterback for Aaron Rodgers to be able to, to mentor a lot of these guys. They already have their mentors.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, who you thinking, Todd Marinovich?
Lavar Arrington
A lot of them are, A lot of them already have their mentors, man. And, and you know what? They're not really like, that whole idea of how it works with the whole respecting. And I know who you are and this, that, and the other. And, you know, this is how it's going to work out and blase blah. Like, those days are kind of gone, man. Like, like these new age athletes, they, like, they'd be like, I don't care that you're Aaron Rodgers.
Jonas Knox
Really?
Lavar Arrington
Oh, yeah.
Jonas Knox
Damn.
Lavar Arrington
Oh, yeah. I don't care. I don't care. Like, that's not, that's what, that's not what my concern is. And you come in with those strong personalities, and these guys have already been, been, already been handled in a way where, you know, they're doing things at a high level. I mean, like, think about this. Like, guys like myself, I train guys from the time they're in the eighth grade. You know, I mentor them and talk to them from the time they're in the eighth grade until they go to the pros. You know, you, you have guys like tj, you know, Hushman, Zada, you know, you have these former, yeah, you got these former pros that be out here, you know, mentoring and, and teaching these kids and, you know, whatever it is that they're into, and they already have a developed sense of, of identity and self by the time they get to the pro level. So I think that's a little bit overstated at this point, too, to say, oh, well, we're going to bring Aaron Rodgers in to be a, you know, to be, to be a mentor to him. Like, I don't, I'm sure a guy like Cam or, or Shador Sanders or whatever, whoever it would be, I'm sure they'd be like, yeah, no, I'm good. Like, I got my mentors come on, like, hey, bro, you just worry about making sure that my bag gets to my, to the, to the bus and to my room and make sure that I have a coffee when I get to the meetings in the morning. That's what you could do for me, Aaron Rodgers.
Jonas Knox
Hey, come on, Cam. You don't want to microdose with me? Come, come on. You play to Miami. Let's go. By the way, so Lee Dalap sent me a text that they are the College Football Playoff and Sugar bowl officials are in a meeting with the FBI right now discussing the status of the Sugar bowl. But there is a thought that they are still strongly considering postponing it 24 hours. Some reports have said that that is the case, but we are waiting for official confirmation on that, that that is the status as far as what, what could take place following the tragedy overnight there in New Orleans. So again, keep you posted on that as soon as long as information comes in. We'll have that for you here. Also, update on the Peach Bowl. Texas as a rolling over. Yeah, Texas has a 143 lead over Arizona State. Arizona State went up by a field goal early. Texas scored and then a punt return for a touchdown for the Longhorns. And so they now have the ball back there with five minutes and change left to go in the first quarter. It is the Herd here on fox Sports Radio. Lavar Arrington
Turn on the news.
Jonas Knox
This is the Herdline news. I mean, who needs Jason McIntyre, Orion music when you've got Lee to lab for the Herdline news. Lee, what's happening?
Lavar Arrington
Oh, gosh.
Unknown
Hey, guys, let. You know. Well, Steelers. Hey, thank you very much.
Jonas Knox
Was that Vanilla sky one of the great seeds of all time. You imagine walking into a bathroom and some guy looks like his neck is melting, and some. A hole behind him says, hey, dude, fix your fucking and face. All right, Lee.
Lavar Arrington
Lee.
Jonas Knox
What do we got, guys?
Unknown
The Steelers were reportedly told yesterday that they will be hosting an international game next year in Dublin, Ireland. And the thought is, is that they will be hosting the Green Bay Packers.
Jonas Knox
Oh, yeah. Russell. Russell Wilson, what do you think about. Yeah, what do you.
Lavar Arrington
Well, you know that I believe the Rooneys are like, ambassadors to Ireland, Something to that effect.
Jonas Knox
They've been really pushing for this. Like, they. Because I think the last game in Ireland was a preseason game. I think it was Steelers, bears. Was it 98? Do I have that correct?
Unknown
It was back in the 90s.
Jon Stewart
Yeah.
Unknown
I think 98 is correct.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. Around that time. And I, like, they did a huge number. So, you know, that does. That does make sense. But they're losing a home game. You know, there's probably people that are like, dude, I mean, we don't want to have to shell out all that cash to fly over to Ireland. Can we just go down and go to, you know, acupuncture?
Lavar Arrington
Stiller fans aren't looking at it that way. They just gonna roll. Still, one thing about Steeler fans, they just. They just gonna roll.
Jonas Knox
Man, it is wild that it doesn't matter where you are in the country. There's a Steelers bar. So somewhere.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, everywhere.
Jonas Knox
Literally.
Lavar Arrington
I was really about to say we're everywhere, but, you know, I. I don't. That's weird.
Jonas Knox
So what do you mean?
Lavar Arrington
I am a tremendously big Steeler fan.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. What's wrong with that?
Lavar Arrington
You know, I don't know.
Jonas Knox
Could be worse. Could be a Bears fan.
Lavar Arrington
I just. I just think it's weird when fans say us, like, you know, my. Like, you know, we won. I don't know. It's like, weirds me out.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Unknown
Us Packers. We, you know, own the team here.
Lavar Arrington
Yeah, it's weird.
Unknown
Packers owner here speaking.
Lavar Arrington
Taken. And you know who ruined it for me? Dallas fans. They ruined it for me, like, because they'll talk to you like they play for the team.
Jonas Knox
Yeah.
Lavar Arrington
Like, literally, like, you were about to go up against them when you play against the Dallas Cowboys. So thank you to the Dallas fans for ruining it, you know, saying us and me and we and my. You know, as it Applies to the teams that I love.
Jonas Knox
That's right. As you know, they got family. They got a.
Lavar Arrington
We ain't done winning yet.
Jonas Knox
The, you know, fate fade had some payback for the Dallas Cowboys. It was called no Super bowl since 96. So you're all right there. You know, it's been, by the way, 30 years. You know, it's, you know, still my. My favorite stat about the Cowboys is like, the Jaguars and Jets are the laughing stocks of the league. They've been to a conference championship game more recently than the Cowboys have. Like that. That's one of my favorite stats about the Dallas Cowboys.
Lavar Arrington
You know what one of my favorite things is right now about America's team?
Jonas Knox
What's that?
Lavar Arrington
Is that they realize they are not going with no super bowl, and so they let. Let one of their players go to God. Try to go find one.
Jonas Knox
Yeah. What's your. What. What's your problem? Perfect.
Lee Delap
No, I just. I always love, you know, as a Lions fan, I used to love people bringing up, you know, the 1930s, 1990s NFC championship between the Cowboys and the Lions. It's like one team became the 90s team, and the other, you know, bombed out, and somehow we flipped that script.
Jonas Knox
Yeah, well, listen.
Lavar Arrington
Well, you haven't totally flipped the script, my guy. I know, but they did get three Super Bowls.
Lee Delap
Talking about conference championship periods. Lions didn't make one. I don't remember what else happened after that.
Jonas Knox
Although. Although, if you listen. If you listen to Rob Parker, they're not gonna do anything with Dan Gamble as their coach.
Jon Stewart
Coach, stop it.
Lavar Arrington
Why is he not like Dan Campbell?
Lee Delap
He's been trying to fire him since, like, the mid-2022, and that's exactly when the Lions started winning a whole bunch of games.
Jonas Knox
I don't know. I always. I always tell some to tease Rob. I'll say, listen, if that was Jim Caldwell making those decisions, you wouldn't complain at all because, you know, why is that? You know, why.
Lavar Arrington
Why is that racist?
Jonas Knox
Yeah, T. Lee, what else we got, guys?
Unknown
We've talked a lot about the MVP race between Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson. Well, Joe Burrow was asked about the chance from his. His fans saying, mvp. Mvp. But he said, you know what? Got to win the division first.
Jonas Knox
Did you get the MVP chance when.
Lavar Arrington
You went off the field?
Jonas Knox
I did.
Lavar Arrington
What were your thoughts? I'll win one one day.
Jonas Knox
You feel like this this year might.
Lavar Arrington
Be your point or.
Jonas Knox
No, I doubt.
Lavar Arrington
Usually you got to win your division.
Jonas Knox
He's so cocky. But it's great. Like, yeah, I'M going to win one one day. Yeah, I'm not worried about that. You know, it just won't be this year, by the way, if they get to the playoffs. Who the hell wants Cincinnati in the playoffs right now with Joe Burrow slanging it? Just think about that var. Get that work.
Lavar Arrington
Let's, let's take a break, man. Let's, let's redo this thing.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 2: Eagles Sit Saquon Barkley
Release Date: January 1, 2025
Overview
In this episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, hosted by iHeartPodcasts and The Volume, the primary focus centers around the Philadelphia Eagles' controversial decision to rest their star running back, Saquon Barkley, in the final game of the season. The conversation delves deep into the implications of this decision, the potential impact on Barkley's career, and broader NFL strategies regarding player health and record-breaking opportunities. Additionally, the show touches upon a tragic incident in New Orleans affecting the Sugar Bowl and provides updates on the Peach Bowl and notable NFL team movements.
1. Saquon Barkley’s Resting Decision
Timestamp: 02:08 – 19:59
The episode kicks off with co-hosts Lavar Arrington and Jonas Knox dissecting the Philadelphia Eagles' decision to sit Saquon Barkley in their final game against the New York Giants. The move, aimed at preserving Barkley’s health for the postseason and avoiding injury during a game with minimal playoff implications, has sparked widespread debate among fans and analysts alike.
Nick Sirianni’s Stance
The conversation references comments made by Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni, who explained his decision-making process:
"I'll talk to our staff, I'll talk to the players, I'll talk to Howie... to make sure I'm making the best decision for the football team."
— Nick Sirianni (04:05)
Sirianni emphasized prioritizing the team’s success and individual player well-being over individual accolades, drawing parallels to previous instances where team success overshadowed record-breaking pursuits.
Hosts’ Perspectives
Jonas Knox initially leaned towards believing that Sirianni would allow Barkley to play, given the opportunity to break a significant rushing record. However, after analyzing Sirianni’s comments and the team's official stance, co-hosts express skepticism and disappointment.
"That is crazy. Well, I, that's crazy."
— Lavar Arrington (07:02)
Arrington criticizes the decision, arguing that the allure of historical records should take precedence over conservative play, especially when the team isn’t in contention for a higher playoff seed without the record chase.
Knox concurs, highlighting that such a decision likely reflects Barkley’s own perspective on the matter, suggesting that Barkley prioritized team success and his postseason viability over personal milestones.
"I just feel like they wouldn't have done this unless Saquon wasn't."
— Jonas Knox (09:22)
Arrington further elaborates on the emotional and professional aspects, comparing Barkley’s situation to hypothetical scenarios involving other legendary players, underscoring the perception that the decision undermines the significance of individual achievements.
2. Tragic Incident in New Orleans Impacting the Sugar Bowl
Timestamp: 23:09 – 27:06
The hosts shift focus to a heartbreaking incident in New Orleans, where a suspect drove a truck into a crowd celebrating New Year's Eve, leading to multiple casualties and injuries. This act of violence has cast a shadow over the Sugar Bowl scheduled to take place in the city.
Potential Postponement
Jonas Knox reports initial rumors from WDSU indicating that the Sugar Bowl might be postponed by 24 hours to ensure safety and allow authorities to manage the aftermath of the tragedy.
"We are waiting on a second confirmation of that, but that is at least what the initial report from WDSU is saying."
— Jonas Knox (24:35)
Lavar Arrington expresses solidarity and concern, emphasizing the importance of prioritizing safety over sporting events.
"Thoughts and prayers, obviously, and positive thoughts to them and everyone involved."
— Lavar Arrington (25:26)
The hosts underline the unpredictability of such events and the necessity for event organizers to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, ensuring the well-being of all participants and attendees.
3. Peach Bowl Update: Texas vs. Arizona State
Timestamp: 27:06 – 39:42
Continuing with college football coverage, the episode provides an update on the Peach Bowl matchup between the Texas Longhorns and the Arizona State Sun Devils.
Current Game Status
Jonas Knox details the early lead by Texas, highlighting their aggressive gameplay with a score of 7-3 within the opening minutes of the first quarter.
"Texas has just scored eight minutes and change left to go in the opening quarter there."
— Jonas Knox (27:06)
He notes Texas’s dominant performance, including a pivotal punt return for a touchdown, and forecasts continued pressure from the Longhorns throughout the game.
Meanwhile, Arrington offers analysis on Arizona State's efforts to keep the game competitive, referencing key players like Cam Scatterboo and drawing parallels to previous defensive challenges faced by the team.
4. New York Jets' Future with Aaron Rodgers and Devonte Adams
Timestamp: 39:42 – 36:53
A significant portion of the episode is dedicated to the New York Jets' rumored decision to part ways with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers and standout wide receiver Devonte Adams.
Breaking News
Jonas Knox reveals sources indicating that the relationship between Jets owner Woody Johnson and Rodgers has deteriorated beyond repair, leading to expectations that both Rodgers and Adams will exit the team following the season.
"Source tells us that the relationship between Woody Johnson, the owner and Rodgers is irreparable."
— Jonas Knox (27:52)
Hosts' Reactions
Arrington expresses skepticism about the Jets' decision, debating the implications for Rodgers’ legacy and the potential impact on Adams' career. He contemplates the challenges Rodgers might face in finding a new team willing to integrate him, considering the media attention and drama he brings.
"He has been a brilliant football player throughout his career, but you got to think about the idea that... he generated this constant media attention that's driven by drama."
— Lavar Arrington (30:40)
Knox speculates that Rodgers may retire after achieving personal milestones, such as reaching his 500th touchdown pass, suggesting that Rodgers might prefer leaving on a high note rather than extending his career in a less favorable environment.
"I think he walks away. I don't think he plays again."
— Jonas Knox (31:56)
Devonte Adams' Future
The discussion also touches upon Devonte Adams' prospects, with Arrington questioning whether Adams will find a stable position in the NFL after navigating multiple team changes and the fallout from the Las Vegas situation.
"He now still becomes like a de facto... journeyman."
— Lavar Arrington (32:23)
5. Additional NFL and College Football Insights
Timestamp: 43:06 – 48:09
Beyond the main topics, the episode briefly covers other NFL news, including potential international games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in Dublin, Ireland, and evaluates fan cultures surrounding teams like the Steelers and the Packers.
Additionally, the hosts discuss MVP races within the NFL, specifically highlighting Joe Burrow's aspirations and humility regarding the title, juxtaposed against his on-field performance and division-leading efforts.
