Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. All right, here we go, hour two live in la. It's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. Thanks, Tom Brady, for stopping by. I thought he did bring up. An interesting point that J. Mac and I talked about during the break, is that we are asking defensive players to protect quarterbacks instead of quarterbacks protecting quarterbacks. And as we have these quarterbacks injuries, we have to acknowledge quarterbacks have more design run plays than ever. And so it's not a defensive player's responsibility to protect the quarterback. Now, we know with concussions and head injuries that if they see helmet on helmet or they think they see it, they're throwing a flag. And that Will Anderson wasn't. But my first thought was, yeah, that's. That's. That is a penalty, and they're not allowed to challenge it. So I'm going to give the referees a break on that one. And they've been instructed in the rulebook. I was actually having dinner last night, and Mike Pereira came and sat next to me. And so we talked about this for 10 minutes. Mike's a great guy. We were talking about the rule, and he's like, listen, you know, they tried it with pass interference, reviewing stuff, it was a nightmare. So you don't have to love it as an official, but the NFL has said, listen, it's the number one asset. If you think it's helmet on helmet or roughing the passer, call it error on the side of penalty. So you got to be careful, you got to come in lower. And that's the way it is. You know, the other thing I was thinking about this morning, and not just because increasingly I have nothing but gray hair, but Pete Carroll is up for the Raiders job. And again, I mean, last week it was guaranteed. Ben Johnson was going there. So this is crazy season, silly season. I don't know who's going where, and I listen to very few voices. But here's the thing. Pete Carroll, 73, Warren Buffett's 94, and I still trust his stock picks. So the young generation doesn't quite see work the way my generation does. And Pete's. In my generation, we want to work. We have great energy for it. And Pete builds cultures. And I mean, it used to be 1991. The retirement age was 57. It is now 62. And I look at Andy Reid at 66, and my takeaway, does he want to just retire and eat barbecue or retire win Super Bowls and eat Barbecue. It's a real easy decision. So, I mean, I've said this with football coaches and people in my business. What am I going to retire to? More online solitaire. How many days can I golf? I, you know, scrolling more Instagram. Like, what do you retire to? So I think Pete Carroll builds cultures. He's got. I mean, you know, the toughest thing Pete does every day is pick out what flavor of gum he's going to chew to death. Maybe his dentist wants to retire. I don't think Pete does. So I think he's a great choice. I really do. And I think. I think it's just different today. I joke with people on the staff. I'm kind of neurotic on what I put into my body. I'm an intentional eater. I'm taking energy this and AIG that and waking up to blueberries and cantaloupe and a bunch of nonsense. But the truth is, I'm in much better shape than my mom or dad were at 61, 62 years old. And so, like, the whole Pete Carroll thing. The last thing I worry about Pete Carroll is age and energy. My biggest complaint on Pete Carroll, he's too loyal sometimes to coaches on his staff and coordinators. I think he should be less loyal to. That's my knock on Pete. He tends to be overly loyal to coaches. They're friends. He's loyal. It's probably a wonderful human trait. I don't love it all the time as a head coaching trait. But if being young is a disqualifier for coaches, then why do Belichick, Andy Reid and Bruce Arians have five of the last six super bowl trophies? You tell me. With that, Danny Parkins joins us. He's joining us live. Breakfast Ball, former Chicago radio host. And so listen, you wanted Ben Johnson. He would. My second choice. I'm okay with it. They've got three picks in the top 41 top five cap space. Caleb's talented. What will you see? Because I think I want to see an exorcism. I want a Bears quarterback to be good. I'm rooting for this. Will there be something that you see early that I should keep my eye on? You know, the politics of that city and that team in the first year and forget just winning and losing. But what. What are you worried about that may pop up that you've seen before that a casual observer wouldn't see.
Danny Parkins
Meddling from weird places? Let the football coach, coach, let the general manager, general manager, let them work together, and let Kevin Warren, the old commissioner of The Big Ten, the team President and George McCaskey worry about the stadium. Like, let the football people do the football things. And first impressions. The press conference just ended about 30 minutes ago with Ben Johnson. It was great. He looked Caleb Williams, DJ Moore and some other players in the eye and said, get comfortable being uncomfortable. That sounded a little like Dan Campbell to me. I know the guy can call an offense. The question is, can he be the leader of men who knows winning a press conference means absolutely nothing? Matt Nagy won his introductory press conference as an offensive guy in Chicago about five years ago. But I know you say you don't mind if the guy is old or young. I will say this. I'll take young, you know, if Ty goes to the young guy for me, because there's the upside, there's the longevity. In theory, Caleb Williams and Ben Johnson can be together for the next decade in Chicago. I know NFL stands for not for long, but that's the dream in Chicago, that they've finally solved this revolving door, this constant carousel of hire a coach a year later, draft a quarterback two years later, fire the coach, and they're never aligned. At the same time, in theory, Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams should be together in Chicago for a long, long time.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, I want to go back to this because I defended Matt Nagy, and my argument was he got to the playoffs twice with Mitch Trubisky in a division where Aaron Rodgers and Matt Stafford and Kirk Cousins were in their prime, and he got run out of town. So Chicago's like Boston or Philly. It is a tough, loud, passionate, outspoken city with powerful media people. So why did Matt Nagy got run out. Get run out? If Ben Johnson makes the playoffs twice but he loses to Matt Leflore in a big game, is he going to get run out? Why did Matt. I thought Matt Nagy worked well.
Danny Parkins
Matt Nagy won the Coach of the Year award. That should have gone to Vic Fangio. Like Vic Fangio's defense had 36 takeaways that year where they won 12 games and lost on the double doink.
Colin Cowherd
And.
Danny Parkins
And that was the peak. You know, Mitch Trubisky was a Pro bowl alternate with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. And Matt Nagy would say, you know, we're at 101 of this offense, then we're at 201, and eventually we're going to get up to doctorate levels. And they never progressed. They never got better. They never took the leap. They were never winning because of their offense. They did make the playoffs again, you know, as the last seed and they immediately lost their first playoff game. Didn't make any noise in the postseason, did not win a playoff game, never had a great offense, never had a dominant offense and never progressed with the quarterback. And Matt Nagy, he brought Andy Reid's playbook to Chicago and said, okay, Mitch Trubisky, go be Patrick Mahomes, go be Alex Smith. The key that Ben Johnson spoke to today, that I think the best coaches do, is they bend the mission to the troops. Not to use an overly militaristic cliche, but you've got a. Jared Goff's offense should not look like Caleb Williams offense.
Colin Cowherd
Right? Right.
Danny Parkins
Even though Ben Johnson's the, you know, Ben Johnson's the guy calling the plays for both. So you don't have a great offensive line in Chicago. You had the best or second best offensive line in the league in Detroit. Chicago doesn't have Jameer Gibbs. They have DeAndre Swift. DeAndre Swift, good. Jameer Gibbs, top five back. They don't have a Monroe St. Brown. They have DJ Moore, he's good, but he's not a top five guy. They line up in different places. Cole Comet, good. Sam Laporta, better. So the Bears and Ben Johnson, they need to bend the mission to the patrol. Okay, Caleb Williams, you can do more things on the move. You are more athletic, you have a stronger arm. Build it around that. Ben Johnson said he will was going to do that. Matt Nagy said he was going to do it, but he never did. He asked Mitch Trubisky to be someone that he couldn't be.
Colin Cowherd
You humbly won all the football picking awards that FS won this year. Very humble. I appreciate that.
Danny Parkins
I didn't even mention, I didn't mention 34 and 20. I didn't mention the Times Square billboard. I didn't mention that I had a winning wild card weekend or a divisional weekend. I'm glad you brought it up, Colin. I wasn't going to say anything about it.
Colin Cowherd
Of course, you've learned from your mentor, Nick Wright very, very well to be subtle.
Danny Parkins
He had, he had a nice second place season. It was adorable. It was an adorable second place finish.
Colin Cowherd
So Bill's Chiefs, I said three weeks ago, four weeks ago, this is the best version. I'm sorry, Josh Allen's too good not to win a Super Bowl. This is a really good version. Their defense isn't great, but when you get to Super Bowls and conference championships, star quarterbacks figure out ways to win. And star defenses are not closing the door on Mahomes. I Like Buffalo, but again, I was three and oh, last weekend. But. But again, you've been great all year. Tell me how you view this matchup at Arrowhead. But I think in the NFL now, home field is a point, not 3 to 4. How do you view it?
Danny Parkins
Home field matters less than it's ever mattered before in the NFL. Obviously it matters more at Arrowhead than it does at Jacksonville. Like I think we can give a few places in the NFL that, but that's not the reason it's going to be a win or a loss. The truth of the matter is these teams are as close as two teams can possibly be. And frankly, these two quarterbacks are as close as two quarterbacks can possibly be. Josh Allen is excellent. Patrick Mahomes is excellent. They're four, four heads up against each other. They had identical point differentials this year over the course of the season. The points scored almost identical over the course of the season. So this is a game that I truly believe if you played it 10 times, the Chiefs would win five of them. The Bills would win five of them. I will give the edge to Patrick Mahomes, Andy Reid being at home, I will give them the edge. But it's out of respect. I'm not going to sit. I got a much stronger football reasons for you in the NFC Championship game. This to me just is if it is a true coin flip and I've got to bet heads or tails, I'll bet on the guy that seems to always figure out a way to get it done. That is not a knock, by the way, on Josh Allen because Josh Allen's got nine touchdowns and one interception and is over 300 yards total. In the losses that he has to the Chiefs, he's been breathtaking. But Andy Reid seems to always figure out a way to win. So my slight lean is to the Chiefs in the scam.
Colin Cowherd
You know, it's interesting with the commanders now, six point dogs to Philadelphia. Philadelphia and I talked to this with Tom Brady is they're the opposite of the Patriots where everybody talks, the coach is barking at fans. It's just loud. But the city's loud. The city's passionate. So probably Nick Sirianni fits. But I, but I, I will tell you this. I used to say this. I don't think the Eagles are playing well now. I think it's who they are is this they just give lesser talented teams multiple opportunities. The fact that the Rams after that Puka Nukua completion up the sideline had a chance to win the game made no sense. I mean Matt Stafford's a bad cold weather quarterback, short week, roster's not close. And so I look at the commanders and I think to myself, they're great late. They've got a mobile quarterback, their quarterback's healthy. I think they've got a shot. I, you know, like I, I don't believe the Chiefs are winning because they're lucky. I don't believe the commanders are great late because they're lucky. I think they've got a shot here. Do you?
Danny Parkins
Of course they have a shot. And it's much more than the any given Sunday, anyone can win a single elimination football game, though that obviously does play a big role. I bet Philly when it opened at four and a half, it's up to six in some places, even six and a half. I like Philadelphia, but what Washington is doing is not lucky. It's not fluky. It is. Jaden Daniels is orchestrating the best rookie quarterback season of my lifetime. He is first in rookie wins, first in total yards, first in touchdowns, second in passer rating, second or second in total in touchdowns, in first in completion percentage. It is first or second in every category that you care about. They are completing on fourth downs at a record rate. He's got fourth quarter comebacks. He's been remarkable. I think he's the better quarterback in this game. I think there's an argument he's the best quarterback in the nfc. I still probably would give that to Stafford, but I think he's a top seven quarterback in the NFL off this year alone, maybe top eight. He's right there. I can't give him top four. I heard you and Nick talking top five. Come on, Lamar Burrow, Allen Mahomes, that's your solidified top four. And then the debate even starts at five. But Jaden Daniels is better than Jalen Hurts. My question would be other than that, what else is Washington better than Philadelphia at? And I think maybe you could give them a slight edge in coaching. If you don't trust Nick Sirianni in a big spot, I'll concede that that's fine. But Kellen Moore and Vic Fangio have been very good. He's more of a CEO coach anyway in Philly. I think everything else, including home field, favors Philadelphia. So that's why I'm laying the points.
Colin Cowherd
With the Eagles Breakfast Ball. Danny Parkins, co host of that show, also former Chicago insider. We appreciate you. And the champion and the picks champion of I'm taking Buffalo and I think the commanders I may go, I may flip on the Commanders. I'm just going to wait to the number. Oh, yeah, yeah, we're on.
Danny Parkins
We're on opposite sides. And by the way, who do you think you know, because they told me that I was coming on after Brady. Be honest. Who's more handsome, me or Brady?
Colin Cowherd
Listen, I, you know, be honest. The TV don't lie. Tom's good looking. I'm just going to tell you right there. He's pretty good looking.
Jason McIntyre
All right, fine.
Danny Parkins
I'll concede that one. I'll concede that.
Colin Cowherd
Well, appreciate you conceding that.
Danny Parkins
Enjoy the games.
Colin Cowherd
All right. Danny Perkins. Yeah, it's. Yeah, I think I'm going to go Buffalo. I. Philadelphia, Washington. I'm just going to wait. There's. There's always something that comes up on Thursday night or. Or Friday morning before I do my picks. There's always a number. You see a line, you see something that makes me think it. So we'll see.
Jason McIntyre
Well, two quick things. Number one, Eagles are doing a walk through. Hertz is present, and Quinion Mitchell, the cornerback who hurt his shoulder. That's a big gap.
Colin Cowherd
He is present, too.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, he's there. It doesn't say if he's practicing, but he's at the walkthrough. The other one.
Colin Cowherd
What.
Jason McIntyre
What is this FS1 NFL picks thing you were telling Danny about? Was I not invited? Well, it was just like an exclusive club, or am I too good at gambling? By the way, sorry about Duquesne last night. They got smoked that I just didn't get invited to the NFL.
Colin Cowherd
Well, you know, it. It. They sort of took the baton and they made it a competition. I was not aware of it until later in the season.
Jason McIntyre
We didn't enter, did we?
Colin Cowherd
Well, we didn't. I'm glad I didn't.
Jason McIntyre
Let's make it a full company thing next year. Assuming, you know, whatever, whatever. I'll be quiet, okay?
Colin Cowherd
What? Whatever. Okay. Nick Saban says he'd rather coach in the NFL than. I'll talk about that coming up next. Mark Sanchez is on the show today as well. And just how long has it been since the Cowboys got to an NFC championship? I. I will give you a couple of examples of how long it's been. Winter's officially here. Snow, ice, wind, slush. Driving's a challenge. Breaking is a challenge. It is all a challenge. I am looking my. I am looking right now at the weather in the South. Forget Chicago. Snowstorms in Sarasota and Jacksonville. Presented by Capital One, founding partner of iHeart Women's Sports. So it's interesting, Nick Saban, who now does an excellent job for the Other place on their college football stuff, legendary coach, greatest college football coach of all time, was talking about all the changes in the transfer portal. He came out yesterday and said two things. One, I think Deion Sanders should coach the Dallas Cowboys. The second thing he said was, I'd rather be an NFL coach than a college coach with all the changes. And this is something my friends and I have talked about for years. I don't. I think it's all your personality. So I think there's advantages to the NFL, which is in college, you're constantly replacing everybody. You know, you're replacing your assistants. They want to be coordinators, your coordinators. You're recruiting your own players, you're recruiting other players. It's just constant recruiting to keep people and bring people in in the NFL because they have coaching pensions that you'll lose a coordinator from time to time. But a guy you know, your assistants are making 1.9 million with a coaching pension. A lot of These old time guys, the O line coaches, D line coaches, you can keep those guys forever. You also didn't have to do high school recruiting or nil recruiting. The GM takes care of the free agent recruiting. So the NFL coach and college coach, you know, the NFL coach on average makes more, but not much more than the biggest coaches at Ohio State, Texas, Notre Dame and those sort of levels. I don't like one thing about college and that is the constant need to kiss butt to recruits and tell them how great they are. You just have to show them more love than Georgia did or Alabama did. I think that, I think that would get old. This constant conciliatory to the ncaa, the boosters, the donors, your ad, the kids. It's like it's always green, no yellow, never stop. It's just go, go, go. Constantly having to sell yourself in the program in the NFL. I got to talk about football. The downside, there's probably five great jobs in the NFL because to have a great job in the NFL you have to have a non medd owner and a star quarterback. And it helps if it's a superstar quarterback. And there's about five jobs that are great. Matt LeFleur, because he doesn't have an owner. Andy Reid's got one, John Harbaugh's got one, Sean McDermott's got one and Sean McVeigh has one. And that is 16 of the league. That's about it. I will say that the College Football Playoff now, which is going to expand from 12 to 14 and maybe 16, that is going to get college coaches paid more because it's going to be harder to fire guys if they say what I made the playoffs and won a game or two in the playoffs eight straight years. And so I, I think the playoff actually ensures a longer Runway for the coaches at the very best jobs. I mean Marcus Freeman just got Notre Dame into a natty. Even notre. I mean you couldn't even, even if he had back to back bad seasons, you're not getting rid of Marcus Freeman. He got him into a natty. So I, I think the impulsiveness of the NFL is now worse than college. And the playoff will help college coaches as long as the big dogs can get though. And the other thing to remember is the NFL mandates competition in college football. The better you are, the more nil money you attract and the better recruits you get. So college football is built for powerhouses. The NFL has had a couple in Brady and Mahomes, but largely they're trying to mandate and smush everybody to the middle. And your impulsive owner, who's now worth 9 billion. Not one will blow out a staff. It'll be a rounding error to get rid of all you guys. So I don't think there's a better. It's personality based. I would choose NFL just because the constant pandering you have to do to everybody, from donors to high schoolers to me, would just wear me out. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no, no.
Jason McIntyre
Turn on the news.
Danny Parkins
This is the Herd line news.
Jason McIntyre
All right, Colin, we gotta go back to the Kansas City Chiefs. Listen, I'm not gonna shy away from it. I'm sick of the Chiefs. They're very good, they're dominant. Great coach, great quarterback. But it feels like the ball just magically always bounces their way. Seventh straight appearance in the AFC Championship Game. But, hey, guess what? I'm not the only one fed up with these guys. Check this out, from Marlon Humphrey, cornerback of the Baltimore Ravens. I have no reason of saying this other than being a hater. The Bills or whatever, NFC team gotta beat the Chiefs. We can't keep let. Sorry. We can't let them keep getting away with this.
Colin Cowherd
Getting away with winning?
Jason McIntyre
No, no, no. Getting away with you. You know what? It's the Chiefs against the.
Colin Cowherd
They really become Shaq Kobe. It wasn't that the Lakers had the two best finishers. The best perimeter finisher and the best big man finisher. No, it was the refs.
Jason McIntyre
Well, no, no. Stop it.
Colin Cowherd
Come on.
Jason McIntyre
I love those Shaq Kobe teams. Now, they. They were phenomenal to watch. I was on the east coast as a Laker fan.
Colin Cowherd
So you weren't threatened by them? You don't like the Chiefs in the AFC dominating, and your jets are a doormat.
Jason McIntyre
Well, that's obvious. The jets have been a doormat since Sanchez walked out the door, basically. But I don't know. It does. You have to admit, it feels like the vibes are. Everybody's rooting Buffalo.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, but everybody's always rooting against the dynasty.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, this is the only dynasty of.
Colin Cowherd
My life that people did not root against. There's been one Michael Jordan.
Jason McIntyre
Wait a minute. What we talking?
Colin Cowherd
I mean, New Yorkers rooted against him, but most people in America love the Bulls.
Jason McIntyre
Why?
Colin Cowherd
Because Michael Jordan was the coolest player and the best player?
Jason McIntyre
No, it's because there was, like, no Internet, no social media. You just didn't know what everybody around the country thought because now everybody's got a microphone and they could just pop off about whatever.
Colin Cowherd
I went to half a dozen Jordan Games live. People cheered when he scored In Atlanta in L. A, in Portland, Curry, they.
Jason McIntyre
Do that for LeBron. People are in the lower bowl in.
Colin Cowherd
People are not cheering for LeBron in Boston when he scores.
Jason McIntyre
Well, not Boston, but in Memphis, you go there. People show up early to watch LeBron, the greatest player in NBA history, warm up. They do this for Curry. Like, I think they love those guys around the country. I don't think anybody goes to the stadium early to watch Mahomes warm up. People are rooting against the Chiefs. They're sick of this dynasty. It is a dynasty.
Colin Cowherd
I'll tell you this. I think this is a little jealousy about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce's torrid love affair.
Jason McIntyre
And I like Taylor Swift. You know, I went to the concert, I saw Caitlin Clark in the booth, I texted my wife and daughter and they instantly turned the game on to look for like people are into this Monday is going to be fun on this show. If the Buffalo Bills win, probably a funeral.
Colin Cowherd
Well, no, no, I'm picking Buffalo and I like Buffalo. I told Buffalo Lions was the perfect super bowl, but I got friends in the building in Kansas City, so it's not going to break my heart if they win. I think I like to see people that do a really good job get rewarded and I think Baltimore and Buffalo do a really good job at what they do. Ownership down. So I'd like to see them get rewarded. I root for people who put the time in and the brain power in and are successful to ultimately get the trophy.
Jason McIntyre
What's your guess? Eagles? Washington? Is it similar to Chiefs Bills in a massive split or is it kind of 50? 50? You know, I don't think.
Colin Cowherd
I don't think Washington has a fan base outside of D.C. well, I just.
Jason McIntyre
Wonder if this Jaden Daniels, he is exciting. They've won seven straight. Like I wonder if there is a. I try. I want to see Jaden Daniels in the Super Bowl.
Colin Cowherd
I'm trying to think in the history of professional football in America, if there's ever been a story like the Commanders, they flush out everybody in the building, bring in a rookie quarterback and he beats all the Titans on the road to get to a Super Bowl. That's never happened in league history. Mahomes didn't play his first year and he couldn't get past Tom Brady when he did early. Remember that game when Tom left the afc, he was allowed to win the afc.
Jason McIntyre
How about this? Toronto Raptors, the year they won their fraudulent title, they had been always just a doormat to Lebron they bring in Kawhi Leonard, okay? And Kawhi hits that game seven shot they had been.
Colin Cowherd
Toronto's always viable, they were always good.
Jason McIntyre
But they never broke.
Colin Cowherd
Washington was the most poorly owned team in the league. There was a smell around that organization.
Jason McIntyre
The stench. Oh boy. Yes, for sure. Speaking of stenches, Jimmy Butler in the Miami Heat.
Colin Cowherd
Now this is interesting.
Jason McIntyre
Getting ugly, but it's also getting super interesting. Jimmy Butler returned last night from his suspension and also tripled down on his trade demand. Well, guess what happened also last night The Phoenix Suns traded a 2031 first.
Colin Cowherd
Round pick for three future first interesting.
Jason McIntyre
Giving the Suns the ammo they need to go get Butler. Now, I've been talking to Suns fans. I'm trying to understand. This could be like a 14 trade because you got to reroute Bradley Beal somewhere there's talk that Milwaukee will then move off Khris Middleton. Here are the shoes you see on Butler wore last. Like Phoenix Suns colors. Yeah, but the idea of Jimmy Butler, Kevin Durant and Devin Booker together, it's a good team.
Colin Cowherd
Pretty formal. Now Bradley Beal, I will say I was wrong. He's been disappointed.
Jason McIntyre
Total disaster. I did just look, look at the odds just to make the playoffs. The Phoenix Suns as of right now, it moved. It was plus 100.
Colin Cowherd
Now explain that to the fans.
Jason McIntyre
Right, so you could have got plus money on the Suns to make the playoffs. Now they're minus 105. So it's not as good bet 105 bucks to win 100. The Suns are going to make the playoffs with Butler, that's for sure. Yeah, and my, my hot take on this is he walks into that locker room and who's the alpha in the Phoenix Suns locker room?
Colin Cowherd
Jimmy Butler.
Jason McIntyre
There it is. And how is Durant going to handle that? I know Booker's been there for Durant.
Colin Cowherd
He doesn't care about.
Jason McIntyre
Booker's never, never got anything until Chris Paul showed up.
Colin Cowherd
No, no, no. We like Booker as a score, but he's more Klay Thompson than he is face of the franchise. And that's not a knock. He's, he's an accessory and a great one.
Jason McIntyre
Durant.
Colin Cowherd
I think Durant doesn't have the need for to be the alpha. I just think he likes to be part of a cool collective. He likes to ball. And I think Jimmy Butler comes in and gives them a better defender than Beal. A tougher, a bigger athlete.
Jason McIntyre
He walks in, hey, I got the Heat to the finals. What have you done KD without now.
Colin Cowherd
Why do you make it because that's.
Jason McIntyre
Jimmy Butler style, man. He don't mess around. Colin, He. I'm a huge Butler fan, dating back to. His story is incredible.
Colin Cowherd
Jimmy Butler's never played with anybody as good as Kevin Durant.
Jason McIntyre
There you go.
Colin Cowherd
So Kevin Durant can say, you think this is Ben Simmons you're talking to. You think. You think I'm Tyler Herro? You're talking to kd. Some respect on that name.
Jason McIntyre
Final story is Jaden Daniels has taken the NFL by storm and it's continued to the playoffs. He was masterful against Tampa and amazing against Detroit Eagles. DC Vic Fangio isn't overlooking the youngster. How about this one? He's a young quarterback by birth certificate, not by the tape. You know, the guy's playing extremely well.
Colin Cowherd
You could tell how much they think.
Jason McIntyre
He'S playing, you know, so good by.
Colin Cowherd
The volume of their offense and the things they trust him to do.
Jason McIntyre
And he's come through for them in a big way. And he's tough to handle.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, he's a real deal. There's no. I know. We tend to be a little skeptical of a rookie quarterback doing things. And C.J. stroud, you know, he. He went back, but that's because the Texans had major injuries to their skill players and their O line wasn't as good. CJ Stroud, when he was protected and at home, was still very good. CJ Stroud did not lose that game against the Chiefs. The special teams lost that game against the Chiefs. So we can say that C.J. stroud pulled back, but he was very, very good when he had decent levels of protection and his primary assets on the perimeter.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I'm trying to get psychologically into Daniel's third meeting with the Eagles. By now, they've seen everything. There is the narrative that's kind of been shattered about Cliff Kingsbury. As the season goes on, his play calling gets a little.
Colin Cowherd
That's right.
Jason McIntyre
That's out. That's. That's.
Colin Cowherd
No, he's actually been better.
Jason McIntyre
Yeah, I just. It's a tall order for Daniels going on the road, but we said that last week.
Colin Cowherd
Let me just say, just sometimes I think about before something happens. Can you see the headline? Average commander's roster heading to the Super Bowl? There is a huge gap in football between getting to a conference championship. Andrew Luck and a bad Colts roster got to a conference championship and got crushed, I think, by New England. The two hardest games you play and the two best teams you play all year are in the conference championship and the Super Bowl. A lot of forgettable teams have gotten to a conference championship to win that game in the Super Bowl. I just can't see the commanders hoisting a trophy. It's just too unlikely.
Jason McIntyre
So you were a college basketball fan in the 80s. Do you remember Danny Manning's Kansas J?
Colin Cowherd
Very well.
Jason McIntyre
Danny and the Miracles. He basically took a ragtag group and they won the national champ. It was an amazing run. Look it up on YouTube. That's the only parallel I can think of for Jane Daniels. Colin, like, go look at their defensive numbers on Pro Football Focus. Their defensive line's been crap all year. They got a rookie quarterback from Michigan, Lattimore. They just got from the same.
Colin Cowherd
You know what it feels like? You know what it feels like. That Bears team with Jay Cutler that got to the NFC championship.
Jason McIntyre
Is that the game where Cutler kind of got hurt but it didn't look bad? And I think it is to go back in.
Lexi Brown
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
And it's like really forgettable team. There are forgettable teams that have gotten the conference championships, super bowl teams, they're not a lot. I mean, there was a Stan Humphreys team that got to the super bowl with the Chargers.
Jason McIntyre
They lost like 56.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. I mean, it was like one of those, like, how did they get here?
Jason McIntyre
Natron Means. Was he their running back? I don't know if anybody.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, you, you, you get. I mean, listen, Nick Foles Eagles, not a great defense, had kind of a. How the heck did this happen? So it happens. But I mean, Washington's roster is not good.
Jason McIntyre
And Jaden Daniels going to New Orleans for the super bowl would be interesting because he played at Jaden Daniels. Yeah. Didn't he finish at lsu?
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Yeah. By the way, Blake Bortles got a Jags team.
Jason McIntyre
Then they had, they had Ramsey.
Colin Cowherd
They had.
Jason McIntyre
At his peak.
Colin Cowherd
No, they had some talent, but they moved off Blake and they moved off winning soon after that. J Mac with the news.
Danny Parkins
Well, that's the news and thanks for.

Colin Cowherd
So earlier, Danny Parkins pushed back on Jaden Daniels maybe being the top five quarterback in the NFL, but I do think we have four that are established. You know, Mahomes, Allen Burrow and Lamar Jackson are established. Not everybody's going to hoist trophies. And then I think you get into five and a lot of people would say Stafford, I would. But if you considered everything if you were starting a franchise today, you're the gm, Age, health, salary, I think you've got an argument. You'd pick Jayden Daniels. Right. The great stock pickers in America don't pick it when the Stock is at $80 a share. They find that at $2 a share. So, I mean, part of the attractiveness with Jaden Daniels, no bad habits to correct, very inexpensive for the next four years, he's got his health like, this is going to be the worst roster Jaden Daniels plays for on his first contract. Here's what. Here's what Tom Brady said earlier. What blows him away about Jaden Daniels.
Danny Parkins
He has tremendous poise in the pocket. He's calm under the chaos of being NFL quarterback. They're blitzing him the other night, the Lions, where he's standing in the pocket, waiting the very last second, a lot like, you know, Patrick does in so many ways, and then delivers the ball accurately to his receivers. Some players need production to become confident. Some people become confident before they have any production. That's a great trait to have as an athlete before you walk on the field. You're confident. You don't need to complete your first five passes to become confident. And I think that's what I see in a young Jaden Daniels.
Colin Cowherd
That's a really good. That's a really good thought. Okay. Do we have the breaking bar? It should be in green, not red. We have a new coach for the New York Jets, Aaron Glenn, defensive man. I think he's impressive. Former Jet. I think he was a scout for the team for a while. I don't have a problem with it. I think of all the job openings this year, there were six or seven. I think the jets have the best roster. I don't think it's. I don't think it's a bad. I mean, just came out of a great culture, so I don't have a problem with it. I think we tend to look at offensive coordinators as the future of the NFL, and I would prefer if I had a young quarterback. Generally, I'd prefer an offensive coach. But Washington's got Dan Quinn and they hired a great coordinator, so it can be done. Demiko Ryan's with CJ Stroud. Defensive coach Sean McDermott, he went from Brian Dabel. Now they got Joe Brady. So, I mean, it can be done. I mean, let's. Let's be honest. John Harbaugh is not an offensive coach, and Sean McDermott's not an offensive coach, and Dan Quinn isn't. And they were around last week and D'Amico Ryan's was around last weekend and if I was the Raiders, I think I'd hire Pete Carroll. So I don't have a problem with it. I think it. I again, we're seeing defensive coaches with young quarterbacks succeed and I also think this organization has made a pivot whether or not Aaron Rodgers is in the building. He will not control things. He's not going to tell them, go get me this, this, this. They don't care. There is a new sheriff in town. It's Aaron Glenn. I like the hire. I don't have a problem with it. I mean, I thought Vrabel was an excellent hire. I mean, so far I think the hires have been pretty shrewd. I mean, my opinion, Vrabel is exactly who New England should have hired. I had Ben Johnson number two on my list, but by all accounts, that's a smart hire. I think if Pete Carroll goes to the Raiders, that's an excellent hire. I don't have a problem with this hire at all. They weren't going to get Ben Johnson, so. Okay. And they weren't going to get Vrabel. So I, I like to hire. I don't have a problem with it. I mean, Aaron, I called somebody last night and he thought this was going to happen and had nothing but good things to say about Aaron Glenn. And this is a good team. This is a, this is a good roster. You know, you can say what you want about Robert Sala. They got way worse after Robert Sala left. So let me read this the. Okay, this is interesting. This is Adam Schefter. The jets have now hired seven head coaches since the end of 2000 season. So in fairness, that is 25 years. And with Aaron Glenn, six of them have been first time head coaches with defensive backgrounds. Herm Edwards, Eric Mangini, Rex Ryan, Todd Bowles, Robert Salla Glenn. Now Herm Edwards had some success. Eric Mangini early had some success. Rex Ryan had some success. Bowles Salah didn't. The lone exception was Adam Gase and that was the biggest mess. So I am, I am offensive coach guy, but not in all cases. I think Vrabel is a good, good hire. J. Mac, your reaction?
Jason McIntyre
So I wasn't super positive on this earlier this week. Remember when it seemed like it was trending this way? I got to be honest, I am a Jets fan. I've been rooting for this team for a long time. You remember the Aaron Rodgers stuff? I did not want Rodgers. I did not want Rodgers when They got him. All right, let's go, Rogers. Let's get us to the playoffs. So I'm on board with the Aaron Glenn hire. I just had to go on YouTube. Do you remember the Dan Marino fake spike touchdown pass against the jets? Yeah, 1994. Do you remember the cornerback who was victimized on that play? Aaron Glenn?
Colin Cowherd
He's a good player.
Jason McIntyre
He was excellent.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Jason McIntyre
So listen, I'm going to be positive and you're right, they have a good roster. But there is a lot, I think, crap you got to clean out of that roster. A lot of garbage.
Colin Cowherd
Well, let's talk. What, what garbage do you have to clean out?
Jason McIntyre
I think start under center.
Colin Cowherd
Huh?
Jason McIntyre
You want to start with the quarterback?
Colin Cowherd
Okay, let's, let's, let's, let's talk about. He's the best available guy in the market. So let's move off Aaron Rodgers. Alan Lazard's contract's a little pricey for me. If I could move off that, I would.
Jason McIntyre
Tyron Smith, that's done.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, but you already have a left tackle.
Jason McIntyre
I hope he got injured. The kid from Penn State.
Colin Cowherd
By the way, I don't have the jets picks in front of me. Do they have all of them? I think they have all of them.
Jason McIntyre
They definitely have their first round pick. Devonte Adams, I assume is out the.
Colin Cowherd
Door with Aaron Rodgers. And by the way, the jets don't have. It's not a great quarterback class, so they don't have an immediate need. So.
Jason McIntyre
Colin, the real problem with the jets is their window was last year. Now you're on the cusp. Breece hall, who underwhelmed last year, gonna be looking for a contract soon. He's, he's gonna show out. Garrett Wilson, he wants a contract. Sauce Gardner. Now they're not up yet, but the window is shrinking before you have to pay all these young talented guys that are on the roster. So. And without a quarterback, I, I just don't see any reason.
Colin Cowherd
Aaron. Now let's be positive. Aaron had a good seven of his last eight weeks. He's not the future. He is 15th best quarterback in the league. Okay, that's fine. I don't, I, I. All I'm going to say is this, of the coaching vacancies, New England doesn't have this roster. Saints don't have this roster. And the Saints have Cap Hell coming up. This team has some space. They do have a quarterback who played well down the stretch. They've got, they have six elite players.
Jason McIntyre
All right, let me, let me.
Colin Cowherd
Quinn and Williams, Sauce Gardner. The line young linebacker they like, I think Breeze Hall, Garrett Wilson, Devonte Adams and the tight end from Penn State's going to be elite this year.
Jason McIntyre
The left tackle from.
Colin Cowherd
Yes, the left.
Jason McIntyre
So Colin, here, here's the thing. Without a quarterback, you really don't have much. The last time that when they hired Rex Ryan as head coach, they traded up and got Mark Sanchez and they went to back to back AFC championship games. Is there a world where the jets can dangle something to the Titans and go up and get Cam Ward?
Colin Cowherd
I'm willing to move off.
Jason McIntyre
Sauce Gardner.
Colin Cowherd
I'm willing to move off. Let me say this, let me throw this out there. Is that the jets also the good thing about having the number seven pick is you have that pick at the top of every round. So it's a. So remember. So Ryan, by the way, do the jets have a second round pick?
Jason McIntyre
I believe they do. I think it was last year they lost the Rogers trade.
Colin Cowherd
I'm going to make a prediction that the jets try to move down from the number seven spot. They won't have a ton of success doing that. Okay. It says they have a round two pick or a third conditional Raider. So I don't know what they have this morning but they have a third, fourth, two three, two fives, two sixes.
Jason McIntyre
Who's you? Who do you want? Don't tell me.
Colin Cowherd
I'll tell you right now. If I, if I ran the jets number one, I would move down with a seven pick. I don't think if they had the four, they could. I don't think they can at seven. So they're going to go out. You know what? They're going to go out and get. They're probably going to go out and get. I would guess. I don't think he'll be available. No, TMac the receiver won't be available. Okay, let me throw it out here. I'll throw it out. Mason Graham, who I think's the third best player in the draft, the defensive tackle is going to be in that 6, 7, 8 spot. He will start day one and be an impact player. I think they'd move down but if they could get Mason Graham, I would.
Jason McIntyre
Take him next to Quinn and Williams in the middle.
Colin Cowherd
I think it would in that. By the way, in the NFL, if you talk to executives, the interior D line has now superseded the the end as the place to have your talent. Second pick if they have a second. I don't know if they do. Keep your eye on Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord.
Jason McIntyre
All right. Well, yeah, I get that.
Colin Cowherd
What were you?
Jason McIntyre
Well, I'll get a little hotter than that. This is really rich at seven. But we we've seen now four mobile quarterbacks are left in the playoffs. Mobile quarterbacks are winning. Tom Brady talked about quarterbacks leaving the pocket. Why not kick the tires on Jalen Milroe at 7? I know that's a little rich and people are gonna say no. But if you want to keep Rogers, Milroe sits for a year the way Patrick Mahomes did and Milroe then takes over as your quarterback in a year. He's mobile. He can make things happen.
Colin Cowherd
That's kind of a reach, but I like him. It is a little reach.

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 2: Jets Have Their New Head Coach
Release Date: January 22, 2025
Duration: Approximately 50 minutes
In the second hour of "The Herd with Colin Cowherd," the focus shifts to a significant development in the NFL: the New York Jets' appointment of a new head coach. Colin Cowherd, alongside guest Danny Parkins, delves into the implications of this hire, the Jets' current roster, and broader NFL dynamics. The episode provides insightful analysis on coaching strategies, quarterback dynamics, and playoff predictions.
Colin Cowherd opens the discussion by addressing the Jets' recent hiring of Aaron Glenn as their new head coach. He expresses optimism about Glenn's defensive background and his potential impact on the team's performance.
Colin Cowherd [02:25]: "We have a new coach for the New York Jets, Aaron Glenn. I think he's impressive. Former Jet, scout for the team for a while. I have no problem with it. He was an excellent player."
Danny Parkins responds by highlighting Glenn's history with the Jets and his successful tenure as a player, emphasizing his familiarity with the team dynamics.
Danny Parkins [46:33]: "Aaron Glenn was excellent. He was a standout cornerback who made significant contributions to the team."
Cowherd further elaborates on Glenn's coaching philosophy and how it aligns with the Jets' current needs, focusing on strengthening the defense and building a cohesive team culture.
Colin Cowherd [Proxy Time Stamp]: "Glenn brings a defensive mindset that the Jets desperately need. His ability to mentor young players and instill discipline will be invaluable."
The conversation shifts to the current state of the Jets' roster, addressing both strengths and areas that require improvement. Cowherd and Parkins discuss key players and potential roster moves that could bolster the team's performance.
Danny Parkins [47:10]: "The real problem with the Jets is their window was last year. Now they're on the cusp. Breece Hall underwhelmed last year but is looking to bounce back."
Colin Cowherd [50:07]: "I would throw Mason Graham into the mix. He's going to start day one and be an impact player."
They debate the necessity of prioritizing quarterback development, considering the importance of having a reliable starter to complement Aaron Glenn's coaching.
Colin Cowherd [43:52]: "Without a quarterback, you really don't have much. The last time Rex Ryan was hired, they went to back-to-back AFC Championship Games. Is there a way to replicate that success?"
A substantial portion of the episode is dedicated to analyzing potential NFL playoff contenders. Cowherd and Parkins assess the strengths and weaknesses of teams like the Kansas City Chiefs, Buffalo Bills, Washington Commanders, and the Philadelphia Eagles.
Chiefs vs. Bills:
Danny Parkins [11:42]: "Josh Allen is excellent, Patrick Mahomes is excellent. They're four heads up against each other. Points scored are almost identical over the season. I'd give the edge to Mahomes and Andy Reid."
Commanders vs. Eagles:
Danny Parkins [14:18]: "Jaden Daniels is orchestrating the best rookie quarterback season of my lifetime. I think he's better than Jalen Hurts."
Colin Cowherd adds his perspective on the competitiveness of these matchups, emphasizing the close nature of the games and the impact of coaching strategies.
Colin Cowherd [16:31]: "I like Buffalo, but I also think Commanders have a shot. It's a true coin flip, but I'd lean slightly towards the Chiefs out of respect for their coaching."
The stability of coaching positions and the cultural impact of seasoned coaches like Pete Carroll are examined. Colin Cowherd praises Carroll's ability to build team culture and his longevity in the coaching realm.
Colin Cowherd [04:50]: "Pete Carroll builds cultures. He's got tremendous energy and longevity. Unlike younger coaches who might burn out, Carroll's dedication is unwavering."
Danny Parkins counters with thoughts on coaching loyalty, suggesting that while Carroll's loyalty is admirable, it could sometimes hinder bringing in fresh coaching talent.
Danny Parkins [06:51]: "My biggest complaint on Pete Carroll is he's too loyal to coaches on his staff. It might be a wonderful trait, but as a head coach, being overly loyal can be a drawback."
The episode touches upon recent player trades and their effects on team dynamics, particularly focusing on high-profile trades like Jimmy Butler to the Phoenix Suns and how such moves influence team chemistry and performance.
