Greg Cosell
Now let's get this party started.
Colin Cowherd
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Ah, here we go live in Los Angeles, hour two and a Thursday Notre Dame, Penn State. Tonight, it's the Herd. Wherever you may be and however you may be listening, thanks for making us part of your day. In three minutes Greg Cosell is going to stop by and excited for that. We're going to talk about all the playoff games in the matchups. It's interesting I looked this morning. J. Mac we got 14 teams in the playoffs. The best eight quarterbacks won their division. So it's more and more it's becoming a quarterback centric league. But I think coaching matters. Experience matters more. Home field can matter. Weather can matter more. Based on like like some quarterbacks I don't trust going into cold weather. Josh Allen I do. Mahomes I do. Big strong quarterbacks. I do. So here's the NFL wild card weekend schedule. I put these teams in three tiers. So and you can follow along if you're on TV or radio here the the first tier is it's kind of the trophy class. They can hoist a trophy. I think five teams can win the Super Bowl. I think it's Philadelphia and Detroit, Kansas City, Baltimore and Buffalo. They can hoist a trophy. Now the next class are teams that I think can win a playoff game or two. They can win game or games in the playoffs. I think Green Bay, Minnesota Rams, Chargers, Bucks could win a couple of games. I think Tampa is the weakest of that group, but I think they could win two games. And then there's those who have been invited and they certainly earned it. More of a participation trophy. Pittsburgh, Houston, Denver and Washington. I would be Surprised if they won a game. So the Troy the trophy class certainly capable of making life uncomfortable. That's not to say the teams in the second tier couldn't beat a team in the first tier. And it's not saying Washington can't beat Tampa or the Broncos can't beat the Buffalo Bills, but I kind of feel like there's three tiers. And with that we go to Greg Cosell joining us live 45 years NFL Films. So just from the outside, I look at the Chargers, Texans and I think coach quarterback and consistency on defense. Bolts, bolts, bolts. Chargers are across the board. But it's the playoffs. C.J. stroud can be streaky. You know, Chargers in big games. Even with Harbaugh, I don't know yet. What does the film say? What are you expecting in that matchup?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, I'm kind of looking at the Chargers owe Texans D Believe it or not, you and I have spent a lot of time talking about Stroud this year. We'll put that aside for the moment. But I think that the Texans are a really interesting defense because over the last many years in sort of the NFL history, so to speak, what are the two positions that everybody says that are premium positions on defense? Edge, pass rusher and corner. And those are two positions that the Texans have really quality players. They've got Hunter and Anderson on the edge. They've got Stingley, who's a top three corner in this league. Now. He doesn't necessarily match up. He almost always plays left corner. And the rookie Lassiters had a terrific season. Where they're hurting is they've lost their two slot corners. So now they're sort of, you know, working with someone. They picked up Brian, who who got cut by New England, and he's been playing slot corner. And the reason I mentioned that is that's predominantly where McCaffrey McConkey lines up. Lad McConkey. And McConkey's had an outstanding year and I'm just curious how that's going to play out because the Texans do like to play man coverage.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. All right, let. Let's talk Denver going into Buffalo. Buffalo is a big favorite for a reason. What I want to concentrate on is Bo Nix because rookie quarterbacks don't do well in the playoffs. First game, especially on the road. Bo Nicks against Buffalo's defense. Could he succeed? Could he move the chains?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, you know, that's really interesting about the Bills defense. That's my concern in the playoffs for Buffalo, to be honest with you, because they don't really have a dominant pass rush. Von Miller's had some good snaps in recent games, but he's not going to play 40 or 45 snapshots in the game. Their secondary, I think, has some questions. Now, they do get their two starting safeties back in Hamlin and Rapp, but it's not a great secondary. So I'm just very curious to see how this plays out, because I think that Denver can have some success throwing the football. Now, the issue for them is they've not been able to run the ball with consistency. But I will say this, Colin. The other side of the ball is not being talked about a lot. We know that Josh Allen can be special. We know that their offense in any given game can put up 30. That's what they averaged. But this Denver defense is very, very good. And they've got a lot of really good players. They're very good up front, and they've got a really good corner in certain and a really good safety combination that a lot of people don't know about in Lock and Brandon Jones. So this game, I think this game could be. I mean, I could be wrong. Buffalo could win 35, 10 and no one would be surprised. I understand. But there's a part of this game that really intrigues me, that thinks it could be a close game.
Colin Cowherd
So I think Philadelphia's got the best roster in the NFL, and I think one of the ways to beat them is to keep that dominating O line, Saquon Barkley, off the field. You're not going to beat. I mean, you got to move the chains against Philadelphia because if you give Saquon and AJ Brown and Hertz and that old line can just suffocate you. It's a little bit like playing Detroit. The best way to beat him is don't let that old line control the clock, the game and the tempo. How does Green Bay's offense match up against the Eagles defense?
Greg Cosell
And this is where you go into the weeds a little bit, because what will Green Bay do in terms of personnel? Because keep this in mind, the Eagles defense has been really, really good. And that's one reason the Eagles can play offense the way they have all season long, because they've not really won a lot of games big and they've not been ahead big in a lot of games going into the fourth quarter. So defensively, what have they become? They've become a nickel defense since week five, I believe it was, when Cooper DeJean became the slot corner. They play about 85% of their defensive snaps in nickel that's who they are. So the question is, will Green Bay, now that they have two really good tight ends, Kraft has been really good. And Musgrave is back. And Musgrave was considered a better prospect than Kraft. Will the packers play a lot out of two tight ends? Collin. And see how the Eagles play? Will the Eagles play with their nickel where they want to play, or will they go with their base defense and take DeJean off the field, which is not how they really want to play? I think that's something to look at early in this game because that will dictate, based on what you said, if they can control the ball with their run game, which I think they need to do. Both teams are run based.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. So I like Tampa to beat Washington, and one of the reasons is I think Washington will have trouble running the ball and I think they'll have trouble stopping the run. So to take a rookie quarterback on the road without much of a run game. And I think Baker Mayfield. I just, I look at Tampa's run game and I think, not Baker, not Jaden. I think the Bucs run game is the story of this game. What say you?
Greg Cosell
Yeah, and I think that's fair. See, the Bucks have become a really interesting offense. They run a lot of plays because Baker Mayfield has the third most drop backs in the NFL of any quarterback. Yet they run the ball really, really well. Irving has been kind of a revelation. I mean, I really liked him coming out of Oregon, but he's five nine and a half, 192, and I'm not sure anybody. I certainly didn't think he could carry the ball over 200 times as a rookie. And he's done that and he's been really, really good. And he's dynamic and explosive. Their run game is really good. Now, the Commanders do have a very good defensive front, so that's a definite matchup in this game. But the other thing that really strikes me about this game, Todd Bowles, since about week 12, we know he blitzes, but Collins, since week 12, he's blitzing like crazy. Now, Jaden Daniels has been very good against the blitz, but that doesn't deter Todd Bowles. He doesn't care who he's playing against. So I think that's a real critical matchup in this game. How would the Commanders handle the buck splits Concepts?
Colin Cowherd
So the game, the Monday night game. J. Mack loves the Rams, and I will admit Darnold struggling against Detroit gives me some pause. I. I guess here's my feeling on Minnesota. I love the coach I love the quarterback, I love the receivers. I don't necessarily love the O line. I think they're well coached, but I don't think their personnel is great. The Rams are at home. I think they've got a more stable, talented team, unit to unit. Whereas I think there's some stars in Minnesota, but a few holes, I'm kind of interested. Rams young defensive front is healthy, twitchy, and I kind of think they match up well with the Vikings O line. What do you think?
Greg Cosell
I agree a thousand, I agree one thousand percent. And the tape shows that the Vikings O line has struggled throughout this season in pass protection. And Darnold, one of the reasons he's become really good this year is he's willing to stay in the pocket and deliver the ball late in the down with bodies around him. But this Rams D line, particularly their sub front where they have Turner and Fisk inside, Young and Verse outside, I think that's going to cause problems for this Vikings O line. And you could make the argument that right now as a rookie that Jared Verse is the best speed to power rusher in the NFL. Wow. He's going to give problems to, to this, to this O line. So that to me is. It'll be an overlooked element of this game because everybody of course focuses on the quarterback and the skill players. But I think that that could be where this game is won and lost.
Colin Cowherd
You know, I one of the things we were talking about the Chicago Bears earlier and I said, listen, you got to, you got to maximize as much as you can Caleb Williams. But it can't just be about Caleb Williams. Joe Burrow didn't make the playoffs because they're too quarterback centric and they're bad other spots. And I look at Baltimore and Lamar wins the MVP and what do they do? They go get him. Derrick Henry. They don't say, lamar, we want more of you. They're like, you know what, we want this to last a long time. We want to be a little less Lamar Reliant. That's why I respect the Ravens so much. So I want to talk about Derrick Henry, not just Lamar here against the Steelers because I love an organization that has a superstar and doesn't make him put the superman cape on every week. I think Lamar completed 10 passes once this year and they won a game. I love that. Let's talk Derrick Henry, Ravens against the.
Greg Cosell
Steelers, which is a lot like the Eagles too, in that Jalen Hurts hasn't thrown a lot of balls in a lot of games. So you talk about Derrick Henry, you know, they lost once to the Steelers and they just didn't give the ball to Henry very much. The second time when they won, they did. You know, I think if you talk to Todd Monk and he'll tell you that Henry is the key to what they do. Now we know how great Lamar is. That's no knock on Lamar Jackson. He's had his best year and he's an unbelievable player and he dictates many things defensively. But you could argue that Derrick Henry is really the starting point and when they give him the football, everything works off that. And their run game is extremely multiple. So Henry has been terrific. I mean, in any other year. The fact that he gained over 1900 yards, no one's even talking about that because of Saquon. Deservedly so. But 1900 yards isn't bad either. So it does start with him. But I think Lamar has in many ways improved this year as a passer. And when I say that, you know, you can look at the numbers. We know the numbers, they're great. But I think there's things I look for when I watch tape that tell me whether a quarterback is playing at a higher level and there's examples of that and actually we've seen it throughout the year. We can go to the play right now if you like, because that's a. There's a great example of it and it was from last week. I mean, this is a touchdown he threw to Andrews and it just, you know, you see it now. It looks, hey, good throw, pretty routine. But this was not in the least bit routine as a throw. And what you're going to see here is you're going to see Jackson, he's in the gun. They're in 21 personnel, which means they have Ricardo on the field. Okay. And there he is. So they have two backs because he's essentially a back. And they've got Andrews here and he's split the single receiver split to one side of the field and he's going to run a corner route. Okay. And they run this a lot with him in the red zone. Now what they're going to do is take Mitchell, who's a very fast back. He's going to run into the flat. So it's really a two receiver route to that side of the field. Now look at what Lamar sees. He sees a post safety. He knows that that safety will not be a factor at all on Andrews corner route. He's not going to get there. So he knows now that he's got the matchup. That he likes Andrews vs. Delpit, the safety for the Browns. Now, Delpit's a very good player, but, you know, he'll take Andrews one on one against any safety in the league, certainly in the red zone. So as this play develops, we stop it right here. This is where Lamar has made the decision to throw the football. Okay? Now he sees this. He's not going to throw it right there. He's going to throw it to his spot, but he's made the decision to throw the football. So this is about timing. This is anticipation. And now it requires really precise ball location. And this is really what you look. Because look at Delpit now where he is in relation to Andrews. He's outside of Andrews. But Lamar knows with Delpit's body turned that way, Colin, he cannot play this throw. So he throws this ball. This is the kind of thing you look for when you study quarterbacks, these kinds of throws. And the ball location is absolutely precise. It's perfect. And you get a really good look at that from this angle. So these are the things you look for. You know, most quarterbacks can throw to guys who are open. Throws like this really dictate how a quarterback's playing. Lamar's made more of those kinds of throws this year than ever before in his career.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, my staff just wrote down that Zay Flowers has been ruled out, which I, I don't love because I do.
Greg Cosell
Think, not a surprise.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah, he can be a little hit and miss. There's some drops. But he has added. He. He has added an explosiveness which I think is an element. Baltimore's no fun to play. The quarterback's the fastest guy on the field. Derrick Henry's. They're just no fun to play. And that's why, by the way, I want to ask you one big broad question. And, and I want to go back to Harbaugh and the Chargers again and we can show some video and talk about this. But defensively, it's the same darn team. You know, they added Alt and Lad McConkey and they got a couple of fifth round corners out of college. Right. How in the world has Jesse Minter taken the same personnel and they've gone from 32nd to 1st? What is the film say on the Chargers revelation defense?
Greg Cosell
He does a lot of different things. For instance, they're a big team playing what we call big nickel with three safeties. So they take Derwin James and they basically have made him a multi dimensional, dimensional movable chess piece. And he is a dynamic player who can pretty much do Anything on the football field and he's become foundationally a very important piece. Then one player who was there last year, Colin, and you know him from usc, Tui Polotu.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
Greg Cosell
He is a really, really good football player. Not talked about enough. Another player that can line up inside, can line up outside. You can stand him up in the middle of your defense. He's a really, really good player who doesn't get talked about enough because Bosa, Mack, James, but you know, they just have some players who are multi dimensional, multi positional and can really affect games.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah. Greg Cosell, 45 years at NFL Films. Never gets old. Great seeing you again.
Greg Cosell
Thanks Colin. Appreciate it.
Colin Cowherd
You bet. Yeah, it, it, it. You, you've just seen this has been the year of many things, but I think it's been the year where quarterback importance has really taken off. 8 for 8, best quarterback won their division. I also think you have gotten such examples of like we always knew coaches were important, but there's a reason coaches now should be making 15 million bucks a year. Jim Harbaugh, Sean Payton, that's what they. I mean when Belichick and Brady, for years and years we always thought it was kind of 50, 50. Thing is, Denver should not be in the playoffs. And I like Bo Nix, Sean Payton got them into the playoffs. The Chargers should not be this good defensively, offensively they're good. They're not special. They lack some speed and consistency. They're not quite as dynamic at tight end or running back or receiver as you'd like. But boy, this, I mean you talk about between Harbaugh and Sean Payton, the level of coaching is. And it's, and let me just, let me just throw in Dan Campbell, the fact that 18 different guys on the IR for Detroit, 12 on defense, and yet they've held up very well. I look at Detroit not just as the head coach, but the staff of Campbell, Aaron Glenn and Ben Johnson. That is as good as. And by the way, in Minnesota, pick for fourth, Brian Flores. Kevin O'Connell. You're seeing this year, you're seeing a big gap in coaching in this sport. Good stuff. Today. John Middlekopf, my buddy, former NFL scout's gonna talk about the Niners and the Eagles and the Raiders. He knows all three very well. Next hour, JLab has the best audio products in the game. I will say tonight, James Franklin, coach of Penn State, Marcus Freeman, coach of Notre Dame, James Franklin. Now, it should be noted, Penn State used to be an independent, right? Won a couple of natties that way, and now they're part of the Big Ten. But James Franklin says this whole Notre Dame independent thing I'm not a big fan of. I think it should be consistent across college football. I think, again, this is no knock at coach or Notre Dame, but I think everybody should be in a conference. I think everybody should play a conference championship game or no one should play a conference championship game. I think everybody should play the same number of conference games. The truth is, I disagree with this because college football and college basketball are uniquely quirky. And they're not the NBA and they're not the NFL. I mean, let's be honest. We let a Mountain west team into the playoff, really think they're one of the 12 best teams? Nah, it's kind of part of the sport. College basketball. We put teams in that I couldn't find on a map. Do I think they're One of the 68 best teams? Nah. But we just sort of let them in. Notre Dame is different. They have academic standards that other programs often do. Not many players going to other fine universities can't get in or handle the workload of Notre Dame. Notre Dame doesn't need your money. Notre Dame doesn't have to be part of your conference, and I'm okay with that. Between their donors and national alumni, they play at a different level. Not everybody has to be homogenized. That's one of the problems with pro basketball. All the teams play the same. I like an independent. BYU is an independent. You have service academies. You have Notre Dame. Not everybody has to be jammed into a massive conference. And by the way, this has always been a sport of have and have nots financially. I mean, you can go back to the 1950s, 60s, 70s, 80s. It's overwhelmingly outside of, like, in Oregon. It's mostly the same programs at the end of the year. So I like Notre Dame's independence. I think they have standards that are above many of the other schools. I think college football is better with Notre Dame flourishing. Joel Klatt earlier today stopped by and talked about, you know, the cries that Notre Dame should join a conference. You can understand why coaches would want them in a conference. I think that conferences inherently are more difficult than being independent. Although, you know, with their scheduling partnership with the acc, it kind of depends on how that league is going. It was not very, very good this year. And then the other side of this would just be the financial impact and Notre Dame. And people around Notre Dame have told me that their independence is vital to the way that they raise money for their institution writ large, not just their athletic department and their football program. So. So that is. That is a big piece of this. It's. It's important to them on many different levels, including the donor base. Feeling like their dollars really matter. Also, yes. Ohio State next year. I looked at their schedule. It's much tougher than Notre Dame's. Okay. You know, that's the reality of it. But also, Notre Dame, in this new format, currently can never get a buy. So Notre Dame could run the table and they'd still have to play an opening game. So whereas Oregon may have had a tough opening game, but they got a buy. So Notre Dame, according to the new format, Notre Dame never gets a buy. And so I just, again, independent movie studios, independent bands, independent teams, independent political candidates to me are vital for certain companies and entities and industries. And I like Notre Dame not having to bow down and be part of every conference. Do I think they fit the Big Ten? Absolutely. There is no question. Academically and athletically, I think they fit the Big Ten not only in the geographical footprint, but they fit the conference. But the fact that they're like, yeah, they're not that interested. Oregon and Washington were pleading to get into the conference, and Notre Dame's like, yeah, pass. That's why they're Notre Dame. That's why they're different. They don't beg, and financially, they don't have to borrow. J. Mack with the news. No, no, no. Turn on the news. This is the Herd line news.
J. Mac
We touched on the Jalen Hurts concussion protocol earlier. Well, how about his opponent at quarterback? And that's Jordan Love. Everybody's curious in this Fox wild card matchup, how healthy is Love gonna be? He's got an elbow injury. He's dealing with limited at practice. And then he said, and maybe this is gamesmanship. We'll see. I'm hopeful. What? Malik Willis has also been limited with a thumb injury. Eagles 4 1/2 point favorites at the link. Your thoughts on Jordan Love.
Colin Cowherd
I think this is a tough spot for Green Bay. I think they could beat Philadelphia if everybody was healthy and it was in Lambo. But I think Jordan Love is still an ascending player. I don't think he's a finished product. I feel like there are certain players like Justin Herbert. I felt by the end of his first year, I kind of had a finished product. Like, I just thought he had so many college starts. I kind of feel with Bo Nix, I'm getting close to a finished product. Jaden Daniels. I feel with Jordan Love, it was used host date it was second tier footage. Football came in and sat still doesn't have a ton of starts. I feel like he's an ascending player and I. At this point, I think this is a tough spot for him. But I will say if anybody could get hot, he hasn't been turning the ball over. If you told me there was an upset this weekend and it was Matt LaFleur beating Nick Sariani and Jordan Love went off, I would not be shocked.
J. Mac
Has Love been a top 10 quarterback this year?
Colin Cowherd
I think I consider him a top 10 quarterback in the league.
J. Mac
But this.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I mean, you could argue Mahomes wasn't a top 10 quarterback for much of this year outside of the winning.
J. Mac
Look at that. Interesting.
Colin Cowherd
Well, I don't live in the moment. I think Jordan loves size, arm, talent, winning.
J. Mac
What do you want to live in the past?
Colin Cowherd
I like to live in the future.
J. Mac
The present is the best place to be. Next up is Brock Purdy. Oh, boy, this is gonna be. I hope everybody's ready for like two and a half, three months of Rock Purdy extension talk. John lynch says he's their guy. Kyle Shanahan, here he is talking about Brock Purdy, the leader of the Niners.
Colin Cowherd
Brock is the leader of our team. I've loved these three years with Brock. I plan on being with Brock here the whole time I'm here. So, like, Brock's been a stud. He's a guy I got a lot of confidence in and just as a human. Um, but it starts with what he's down in the field these last two and a half years and capable of winning a Super bowl with him. We just almost did.
Greg Cosell
And.
Colin Cowherd
And I know he's capable of getting the Niners super bowl in the future. Okay.
J. Mac
You're not feeling it, huh? I like the plan on.
Colin Cowherd
I don't want to be known as a hater because I think he's a franchise quarterback. I just. Well, I think he's good enough to be a franchise quarterback. I just don't think in a world of Lamar and Herbert and Allen and Jaden and I don't think you're going to hoist a trophy, but I think he's a franchise quarterback.
J. Mac
He was seconds away from hoisting the trophy last year against the Chiefs. So let me ask you, who gets a bigger bag this offseason? Brock Purdy or your guy? Sam Darnold?
Colin Cowherd
Well, Sam Darnold will probably be franchise, so Brock Purdy. I don't think the Vikings are. Unless he puts up a stinker.
J. Mac
You mean like he did in week 18. 18 of 41. Come on. Buck 66.
Colin Cowherd
Tiger woods shanked in his prime. A couple of drives.
J. Mac
Not on 18 on the Masters. Because that's what that was last week for Sam Darnold, Right?
Colin Cowherd
Come on. Okay, five, five, five. Yeah. All right, rock 40.
J. Mac
Anyways, let's wrap it up with Josh Allen. He's got in for his first career MVP award. And listen, he's been amazing this season, partially thanks to OC Joe Brady, who took over in the middle of last season. Brady is one of the names floating around for head coaching jobs and Allen was asked about his impact on Buffalo.
Colin Cowherd
He hasn't done anything for us. Team should stay away from him. He's been fantastic. You know, coming into a situation last year that was. It's not easy to switch play callers mid year. And he came in and, you know, from that day on, if you look at our splits, our success that we've had as a team, you know, it's noticeable. So he's one of the most positive guys in the building. He's always got juice and energy for the guys. I think that's something that we love and appreciate about him and he's as real as they come. I don't know if Brady's gonna get a head coaching job. He will not. Well, what about New Orleans?
J. Mac
What about them?
Colin Cowherd
I think New Orleans is going to take Tampa's OC and weaken.
J. Mac
Oh, Liam Cohen.
Colin Cowherd
I think that it'll weaken the bucks as it strengthens them.
J. Mac
Well, Canales started to turn it on at the end of the season in Carolina. It takes some time. So listen, I'm not bashing Brady. He was awesome, right? At LSU with Burrow. He's awesome in Buffalo with Josh Allen. What do Burrow and Allen have in common?
Colin Cowherd
Colin.
J. Mac
They're really ridiculously talented quarterbacks.
Colin Cowherd
Yeah.
J. Mac
What happened when he didn't have one in Carolina? Got run off quickly. Like if you have a quarterback, you're going to be successful, right?
Colin Cowherd
Well, that's what I say. That's what I say about your buddy Ben Johnson. What coordinator couldn't move the change with the Lions? Running backs, O line, tight end, quarterback.
J. Mac
I mean, you guys are all ones Patriots. That's why he's talking Patriots are Bears and not Jets.
Colin Cowherd
Right.
J. Mac
Ben Johnson.
Colin Cowherd
I mean, I just think we've. We've. I'll contend that the most amazing on resume, the most amazing coordinator in Detroit's the defensive guy who is missing half his starters for the year, and yet they're going out and putting a Hammer lock on people. But I understand offense is clever and hook and lateral and don't downplay hook and ladders.
J. Mac
Come on. Those are. Do you know how cool those.
Colin Cowherd
Oh, they're fantastic. But it's like, you know, they are one place, like Holden one in a golf tournament. It's awesome. You know how often the guy that gets the hole in one on Thursday wins the tournament? Almost never.
J. Mac
Yeah, but come on. The hole in ones, you can't duplicate that. They've duplicated the hook and ladder all throughout the season. Teams can't stop it. They're running in a midfield, third and 12, hook and ladder for a touchdown. That's the stuff dreams are made of.
Colin Cowherd
What you can't duplicate is Detroit's offensive roster. You can't duplicate that.
J. Mac
It's difficult.
Colin Cowherd
They got like six guys that make it. Hall of Fame votes.
J. Mac
Six.
Colin Cowherd
Center left, recept, right tackle, golf. Will. I mean.
J. Mac
Excuse me. What?
Colin Cowherd
Jared Goff's gonna get hall of Fame votes if they go to the Super Bowl. He's in his second Super Bowl. Go look at Jared Goff's numbers. I think you'd be shocked how good they are. Jared Goff's in his prime.
J. Mac
I have not given an ounce of thought.
Colin Cowherd
Jared Goff is in his prime. He's gonna stay behind this O line for four more years.
Greg Cosell
You go.
Colin Cowherd
You go look at Jared Goff's numbers.
J. Mac
So, wait, Eli Manning. Let me just go back because.
Colin Cowherd
Hey, Dan Fouts. No Super Bowls in the hall of Fame. Jared Goff's putting up Dano numbers.
J. Mac
So Eli Manning.
Colin Cowherd
Two.
J. Mac
Two Super Bowls. Is he gonna be.
Colin Cowherd
Yes, absolutely. Okay. I'm just saying, you start looking at Jared Goff's numbers. 2. Taking two teams to a Super Bowl. If he gets there.
J. Mac
Do you have Russell Wilson, hall of Fame?
Colin Cowherd
No.
J. Mac
How many Super Bowls he been to?
Colin Cowherd
2. It's not all Super Bowls. It's not all Super Bowls.
J. Mac
Wilson has good numbers. Come on playoffs every year.
Colin Cowherd
I just said, you asked me would I put him in the super bowl and I said no. Hall of Fame or Hall of Fame? I said no. And I'm not saying I would. Jared Goff. I'm just saying he's got four more because he's not a run around, get hurt guy. And the old line, he never gets touched. He's going to put up. He is going to put up for the next four years. Jared Goff's going to put up silly numbers.
J. Mac
He will. Yeah. See, this is what's so fun about working with you sometimes. You just said Something so crazy. My mind, I was like, caught off guard. You think it's crazy now I'm like, you know, there maybe you don't think.
Colin Cowherd
Jared Goff's going to get hall of Fame votes.
J. Mac
I mean, everybody, Ken O'Brien's got some hall of Fame votes.
Colin Cowherd
Well, Ken O'Brien had a good year.
J. Mac
He had a good run in the 80s for my jets.
Colin Cowherd
J. Mac with the news. Well, that's the news.
J. Mac
And thanks for stopping by the Herd line.
Colin Cowherd
So a lot of times we all, I'm guilty of this. We have, like, confirmation bias is, yeah, I think this guy's great. And so anytime he's good, I'm like, I go crazy. Or we have recency bias. Ooh, that happened yesterday. It must be true. But you can't argue with data. And we got a couple things here that are gonna make a lot of people uncomfortable. Live in la, it's the Herd. Be sure to catch live editions of the Herd, weekdays at noon Eastern, 9am Pacific on Fox Sports Radio, FS1 and the iHeartRadio app. Hey, Steve Covino. Colin Cowherd
Absolutely devastating. The pictures coming out are horrifying. The winds have calmed down. Hopefully that helps. You had a once in a generation storm planes unable because of the winds to help drop water on the fires. It lasted two days and entire neighborhoods and areas have been destroyed. It'll be decades to get it turned around and just, just gutting to watch the images we've all got here at the company friends who have been affected. So please give to the Red Cross. I will immediately after the show and I hope you do as well. So you know, there's a story out there today, Ian Rapoport saying, among others, that it looks like Mike McCarthy will stay with the Cowboys. And this has been my take is that Mike is not a hip young offensive guy nor is he a big prominent alpha. And those are the kind of two coaching groups we all love. But I thought we'd play blind resume Today with Mike McCarthy to give you some sense of how accomplished he is. And I said earlier this week, he's won with legends Brett Favreau, he's won with higher maintenance quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers, he's won with highly compensated, good, not great dak. And he's won with backups Cooper Rush. He's a darn good football coach. So let's play blind resume. We'll put Mike McCarthy up on the last. I'll try to talk this through for our radio audience. So on the left is Mike McCarthy with 8 division titles, 11 playoff wins and a Super Bowl. On the right, we don't know who this is yet. He has fewer division titles, far fewer playoff wins and similarly one super bowl title. Who is that coach, I am guessing. Here we go. Mike Tomlin. Mike Tomlin. There you Go. All right, the next one, Mike McCarthy has a 61% winning percentage, eight division titles and 11 playoff wins. He is slightly ahead of the coach on the right. Both tied with 11 playoff wins. So he would be viewed as the slightly more successful coach. Who is that coach? Bill Parcells. To me, one of the three to four best coaches in the history of the sport. Bill Parcells. Let's put up Mike McCarthy's career winning percentage, division titles, playoff wins and super bowl titles, all superior, all somewhat. Division titles, almost three times as many to Kyle Shanahan. Now look at J. Mac rolling his eyes, wincing at the suggestion that boy genius is not as accomplished as Mike McCarthy. Now let's go to the next. Okay, so this one is fascinating. So they both won 61% of their games. Mike's got twice as many division titles. Mike's got significantly more playoff wins. And they both have a Super bowl title. Let's see who that is. Sean McVeigh. Now, in fairness, McVeigh is much younger, but. But again, it looks like McVeigh is heading down the Mike McCarthy track. Okay, so I'm just asking you, I've got two more. J. Mac, is any of this getting a little uncomfortable? Okay, so facts over feelings. This is data over delusion. I am here as America's honesty broker. Just delivering the mail.
J. Mac
Yeah, sure, sir, of course.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, let's do a couple more. Okay, now this one's interesting. This is a big boy coach. So this coach has a slightly better winning percentage. And one more playoff win. Both these are both. Whoever this coach is opposite of McCarthy is an all time legend. Who is it? John Harbaugh? J. Mac feels as though he's getting humbled on national television. Okay, so just very interesting. Now I'm giving you young coaches, I'm giving you legends. I'm giving you guy. I mean, Mike Tomlin. When you suggest he should be let go, it's outrageous. Everybody wants to bum rush McCarthy out of Dallas. Let's do it again. So again, this is a highly accomplished coach. Division titles, almost the same. Playoff wins, almost the same. McCarthy for our radio audience has a slight edge in everything but winning percentage. This coach is Sean Payton. Anything you'd like to add to this discussion?
J. Mac
You want some context or not really?
Colin Cowherd
Oh, context. Okay, let me throw you a little context.
J. Mac
Who do McCarthy have as his quarterback for most of that playoff run in. In Green Bay? It's one of the five greatest quarterbacks in the history of the sport. Is that accurate?
Colin Cowherd
Safe to say Sean Payton have a Hammond Egger Yeah, he had a Hammond.
J. Mac
Egger and Bo Nix before that Russell Wilson disaster. Drew Brees was on his second team at the time.
Colin Cowherd
Like you got Dak Prescott and Canton. Did I miss something?
J. Mac
I mean, he's the highest paid quarterback in the. In the, in the history of football, I think.
Colin Cowherd
Highest paid.
J. Mac
Yeah, you're acting. I mean, McCarthy gets handed Aaron Rodgers and then he goes to the Cowboys.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, let's talk about. Then he is handed a quarterback that is the highest paid in the sport, despite the fact that he's kind of a B2B plus quarterback, limiting the talent around him. So winning record with Cooper Rush, by the way.
J. Mac
That's right.
Colin Cowherd
He got old, rigid.
J. Mac
Yeah.
Colin Cowherd
Brett Favre. He didn't get Brett in his prime, and then he got Aaron, who wasn't his prime. But I think it's reasonable to say is Aaron's not the. The easiest guy in the league to coach.
J. Mac
That's fair. But you know, these, these blind resumes, really, they irk me to no end because it's basically counting stats. Oh, look at those numbers. And then you start to provide context and you look at McCarthy's playoff failures. I mean, how many meltdowns have they had in the postseason? Colin?
Colin Cowherd
There's only.
J. Mac
I mean, almost every year in the playoffs. McCarthy is a failure. Do you know, A disaster.
Colin Cowherd
There's only one coach in league history that has won big Super Bowls, regardless of quarterback Joe Gibbs. That's it.
J. Mac
Well, Bill Parcell's one with Phil Sims and Jeff Hostetler. Come on. Those guys.
Colin Cowherd
That's fair. That's fair. Parcels. Okay. Parcels. And Joe Gibbs. That's fair.
J. Mac
I mean, I'm sure there's others. That's just.
Colin Cowherd
And by the way, Joe Gibbs is a top five coach ever. I think Parcells is top three. So I'm saying. So now all I'm saying about Mike McCarthy, we love two kinds of coaches. The cool young hipsters. The Sean McFace. I love him, too. And we love the progressive, innovative offensive guys. Or we love the Alphas. Tomlin, Vrabel, Harbaugh. Mike's neither. So some of what hurts Mike is aesthetics. He's not young and cool. And he doesn't. He's not an Alpha. He. I said this for years in Green Bay. He looked like a Milwaukee cop. And Aaron was this LA hipster. And I always said it was such a weird relationship. I also said that Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, I know both a little. Would not work. Russell tends to be the ultimate optimist. Great conviction for things. It's always a sunny day. And Sean can be kind of harsh, blunt, and it's sometimes a little skeptical. And I said, forget the style. Forget. Stylistically, that won't work. Just like Aaron Rodgers and McCarthy should both actually take credit. They don't really match up personality wise, but both of them, both Aaron and Mike made it work for a long time, and both. Even Aaron deserves credit. They eventually rubbed each other the wrong way, but Mike gets dinged because he doesn't, like, he doesn't quite have the right marketing behind him.
J. Mac
Yeah. When he takes to the podium, he's not. Got, like, funny moments. There's. He's just kind of blase. Right.
Colin Cowherd
He.
J. Mac
He indistinguishable. You know that's right.
Colin Cowherd
Good word.
J. Mac
He's just nothing that stands out. Now. Is he a good coach? Yes. I actually think he should say no to the Cowboys.
Colin Cowherd
Let me ask you this.
J. Mac
Another job.
Colin Cowherd
Let me ask you this to put you in the spotlight better. Coach Mike McCarthy or Sean McDermott? Things getting a little uncomfortable in the studio?
J. Mac
Uncomfortable. I just need to give it some thought. I think McCarthy's probably had more success. Right. If you put the rest to each.
Colin Cowherd
Other, that's not arguable. We didn't even do the blind resume with McDermott.
J. Mac
Yeah, he doesn't. He doesn't stack up.
Colin Cowherd
Okay, who's the better coach? Because I think McDermott probably twice. McDermott's very respected, and again, I think Sean's excellent. But nobody's trying to bum rush him out of town every 15 minutes. I mean, McCarthy is dealing with the most meddling owner, a quarterback that is a B being paid like an A plus. They're in A.
J. Mac
He was like runner up to MVP last year.
Colin Cowherd
They've had a couple of. In the last several years, a couple of bad drafts in a division, in a division with the most aggressive, deepest roster, Philadelphia.
J. Mac
Listen, McCarthy, I'm not trying to run him out of Dallas. I think he's. He shouldn't deal with Jerry in this nonsense. I think I would love to see him in Chicago, but I don't know that.
Colin Cowherd
So I would. I would hire Mike McCarthy in Chicago, Mike Tomlin, Pete Carroll. But when I say that people agree on the Tomlin, Pete Carroll, but they're like, my car. If you said. And I've said this, I would hire Mike Tomlin in Chicago, Pete Carroll in Chicago, and Mike McCarthy. But one of those three, everybody be like, I don't know. Just saying he's got a marketing issue, not a coaching issue.
J. Mac
That's fair.
Colin Cowherd

Podcast Summary: The Herd with Colin Cowherd – Hour 2: Penn State vs Notre Dame
Introduction In the January 9, 2025 episode of The Herd with Colin Cowherd, host Colin Cowherd delves deep into the NFL playoffs, providing insightful analysis and engaging discussions on the top teams and matchups. Joined by NFL veteran Greg Cosell, the episode offers a comprehensive breakdown of the current playoff landscape, emphasizing the interplay between quarterbacks, coaching, and team dynamics.
NFL Playoffs Overview Colin Cowherd kicks off the discussion by highlighting the quarterback-centric nature of the current NFL season. With all 14 playoff teams boasting top-tier quarterbacks who have won their divisions, Cowherd underscores the importance of coaching, experience, home-field advantage, and weather conditions in determining playoff outcomes.
Team Breakdown into Tiers Cowherd categorizes the playoff teams into three distinct tiers based on their Super Bowl potential:
Trophy Class: Philadelphia, Detroit, Kansas City, Baltimore, and Buffalo are deemed capable of vying for the Super Bowl, indicating their strong rosters and playoff pedigrees.
Competitive Tier: Green Bay, Minnesota, Rams, Chargers, and the Buccaneers are seen as teams that can win one or two playoff games, showcasing depth and resilience.
Participation Trophy: Pittsburgh, Houston, Denver, and Washington are acknowledged for making the playoffs but are less likely to advance far.
Cowherd remarks at [03:33]:
"There's more and more it's becoming a quarterback-centric league. But I think coaching matters, experience matters more. Home field can matter. Weather can matter more."
Chargers vs Texans Matchup Greg Cosell joins the conversation to analyze the Chargers' offensive prowess against the Texans' defensive strengths. Despite concerns about quarterback C.J. Stroud's consistency, Cosell praises the Texans' robust defense, particularly their edge rushers Hunter and Anderson, and cornerback Stingley.
Cosell notes at [06:00]:
"The Texans are a really interesting defense because they've got Hunter and Anderson on the edge. They've got Stingley, who's a top three corner in this league."
Denver vs Buffalo Matchup The discussion shifts to the Denver Broncos facing the Buffalo Bills, with a focus on rookie quarterback Bo Nix's potential performance against Buffalo's formidable defense. Cosell expresses skepticism about Denver's ability to run the ball consistently but acknowledges their defensive capabilities.
Cowherd comments at [08:49]:
"Buffalo is a big favorite for a reason. What I want to concentrate on is Bo Nix because rookie quarterbacks don't do well in the playoffs."
Philadelphia vs Green Bay Matchup Cowherd emphasizes Philadelphia's dominant roster, especially their offensive line featuring Saquon Barkley. The conversation explores how Green Bay's offense, led by their tight ends Kraft and Musgrave, will contend with the Eagles' nickel defense.
Cowherd states at [08:49]:
"Philadelphia's got the best roster in the NFL, and I think one of the ways to beat them is to keep that dominating O line off the field."
Tampa Bay vs Washington Matchup The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are favored over Washington, primarily due to Tampa's strong running game led by Derrick Henry. Cosell highlights Tampa's explosive backfield and Washington's defensive challenges against the run.
Cosell observes at [11:00]:
"The Bucs run game is really good. Irving has been kind of a revelation. He's dynamic and explosive."
Minnesota vs Rams Matchup Minnesota's offensive line is scrutinized against the Rams' young and agile defensive front. Cosell predicts significant challenges for the Vikings' protection, citing Jaden Daniels' effectiveness against aggressive defenses.
Cowherd remarks at [12:54]:
"The Rams' young defensive front is healthy, twitchy, and I think they match up well with the Vikings O line."
Coaching and Quarterbacks: The Critical Balance A substantial portion of the episode focuses on the balance between quarterback performance and coaching. Cowherd argues that while quarterbacks are pivotal, experienced coaching can significantly influence playoff success.
Cowherd asserts at [03:33]:
"I think coaching matters, experience matters more. Home field can matter. Weather can matter more."
Analysis of Mike McCarthy and Coaching Comparisons The conversation takes a critical turn towards coaching, particularly focusing on Mike McCarthy's tenure with the Dallas Cowboys. Cowherd compares McCarthy's achievements to legendary coaches like Mike Tomlin and Bill Parcells, questioning why McCarthy's defensive strategies have elevated the Chargers' defense so dramatically.
Cosell praises McCarthy at [18:55]:
"He does a lot of different things. For instance, they're a big team playing what we call big nickel with three safeties."
Cowherd critiques at [53:35]:
"McCarthy is dealing with the most meddling owner, a quarterback that is a B being paid like an A plus. They're in A."
The duo discusses McCarthy's lack of a "hip" persona and his struggles with media engagement, contrasting him with more charismatic coaches. They explore how McCarthy's strategic approaches have both propelled and hindered his teams, emphasizing that while he may be a competent coach, his marketability and interaction with players and media do not align with contemporary expectations.
Cowherd contends at [52:22]:
"Some of what hurts Mike is aesthetics. He's not young and cool. And he doesn't. He's not an Alpha."
